Great course if you like to be involved in discussions. He's very knowledgeable about almost every aspect of modern literature! Fun topics for the term as well!
While a bit on the dry side at times, Ryan clearly enjoys his subject. Pay attention to the lectures he gives on the characters in the material covered, make sure that you have proper support for your statements in your papers, and you'll do fine. Please, please contribute to the class disscussions; the course flows more freely when you do.
He is the worse teacher I have had in the 3 years of being in school. His class is full of tension. If your late you cannot come in and once your in class and it has started you cannot leave. He is super strict and can totally ruin a persons GPA. Dont take his class there are many instructors who are better.
he teaches the class as if you were writing a thesis
Great teacher! Ryan is witty, funny and cares about his students. Ryan does mention that if you are late you are to wait outside the door until break however in my experience he does not make you do so. The only thing I suggest is be ready to participate in class he will wait until someone responds to his questions!
Worst english teacher I have ever had! I have not learned anything new. He makes us raise our hands as if we are in elementry. PLUS I made the mistake of wasting my time to ask him to look over my essay when all he did was hand it to someone else to mark. Laughs at his own jokes. Honestly, don't walk away from this class RUN !
Great prof! Ryan is tough, but fair. You do the work, you'll do well. I started at a C but right now I'm getting a B. I'd take a class with him again - he's organized and funny and cares about his students. But he doesn't baby the slackers (thank you!), which are prob. most of the negative comments on here. Ryan's awesome.
Great prof! Awesome guy both in and out of class. Super fair too. If you're serious about learning, do the work, seek his help, and you'll do fine. But if you're lazy and never come to class he'll have ZERO sympathy for you.
LOVE HIM! Take his 1130 class! It's hard, but it pays off if you put the effort in.
Didn't enjoy this class at all.. He's odd and monotone, trys to be funny. I'm sure theres better teachers..
Hard class but Ryan is very thorough and clear. I found attending class regularly was a must. He pretty much lays out exactly what he is looking for in your essay writing. If you miss class you don't get these extra helpful hints. Overall, great teacher and I would definately take a class with him again
I was traumatized by taking English. I failed my engl 1130 and swore i would never take english again. Ryan made a huge difference in my academic studies, he was very helpful and made english more interesting. I would recommend anyone to take his class. good luck
He is a great teacher! If you have questions you can ask through email. He really likes his work. If you READ the books, and have him look at your essay before you hand it in than you'll do fine.
Ryan pushes everyone pretty hard, but i've also been learning a lot. he will even stay late to help. keeps everyone on task. Very professional. I plan to take a lit course with him next.
Great if you're a poor English student + need to learn the basics, unbearable if you're a decent writer. Goes over the same thing over and over, lots of pointless exercises. Doesn't tolerate talking in class, doing other homework, drawing, etc. Several essays, not hard, peer editing is a pain. Textbook is long and only needed when writing essays.
Thorough and practical. Ryan clearly knows where he wants the class to be by the end of the term and tries to take as many people along as he can. A true professional. If I wasn't transferring to university in September, I'd take another course with him.
Very thorough (though he would hate the use of the word "very",,,I can hear him now "What's the difference between thorough and 'very' thorough?" Provides clear expectations and guidelines and is available to help when you need it. He's funny, entertaining...and pretty cute too ;o)
Great prof! Goes the extra mile to help you improve your writing. Will stay late if he has to. Nice guy too (and pretty young). Def. not a pushover though. appreciates students who are serious about learning.
Ryan isn't always the most exciting, but i respect him. treats a 3rd yr class like a 3rd yr class. demands a lot, but you get out what you put in. lots of helpful comments on essays. awesome guy.
Fairly easy. He's not the most exciting but he's a fair marker and teacher. He's clear and concise.
Ryan is awesome. Pushes you hard, but clearly wants people to learn and improve. 1130 is a tough course. Also LOL at person below. maybe don't identify yourself so much?? i am in same class and people say good things. your just bitter.
Awesome class! very funny, maybe if your sensitive you wont like his humor, but he is very helpful and not dry at all, also pretty cute. Just make sure to participate in class, he will recognize it and you will get a better grade.
Ryan was always on time and well organized. The course itself has some dry subject matter, but he does a good job of making it a little more entertaining. Essay topics were varied and interesting. Overall great prof. Very helpful during office hours if your having trouble w/ a paper. I was also in the Thursday class and no complaints here.
Very professional with an enthusiastic attitude, and a passion for english.
Ryan Miller is one of my favourite professors at Douglas College. Ryan is professional and he cares about his job. He is helpful giving feedback on essays and is a fair marker. A great person to talk to; he is funny, nice, and hot ;)
Taking academic writing isn't the end of the world--if you take it with Ryan. Everything is very clear and he is so helpful. Fair marker. Take. Take. Take his classes. Also, he's smokin hot, not in the traditional way (he is an English Prof.), but I guarantee you'll be totally into it.
He states what he wants for the paper really clearly. As long as you follow his guidelines, and making sure you write critically, you're fine. Even though he tends to repeat the previous class's discussion for the first session of the class, and sometimes, the lecture can be pretty dry, he definitely knows English. He's a hip English teacher :)
Great teacher. cares a lot, is pretty funny sometimes, and is super clear on what he wants. Nice guy to talk to outside of class too. he respects those who attend and participate. if you're a slacker, you'll be dead to him -he won't waste his time with you. i would take another course with him.
very generous teacher. assignments are always clear and he always gives useful feedback and provides additional help if needed.
generous marker. if english is a difficult subject for you, take Ryan's class. he's very chill and gives you a decent mark for trying.
wish I had taken Ryan's eng1130 sooner- I've learned so much about my writing that it makes me wish i could go back in time and re-do some courses. he has high standards but he's friendly, he always makes time to help you, and his directions are crystal clear.
he is really good.if you ask him about what you wrote he will help you and give you some good feedback. He knows the stuff.I took my first academic english course with and it is really good.there is no final exam which is awesome and also the topics of assignments are interesting and useful,
He is the best instructor I have ever had,his classes are very clear and informative.A very nice man, never cynical.
I would highly recommended him. He is the best English Instructor i have ever had. I learned a lot from him, Thank you Dr. Miller.
Dr. Miller treats his students with respect and his expectation are always clear. He is funny, mellow and hot. take take him I have learned a lot just by attending classes.
Amazing prof. Is clear on what he wants, makes time for everyone, and is always organized. Gives good feedback. Take him if you can get in - wait lists for his classes are huge.
Best.
This teacher cares a lot about his students, is pretty funny and always polite.Ryan wants you to learn and succeed. To the person below:definitely he is not popular among whiners.
Ryan is a decent instructor. There are no notes available in the class. you make your own notes. there is no visual framework for the lecture as well. Ryan is also a serious teacher. All requirement has to be met; otherwise you will lose marks. sometimes, we worked a lot, but only worth little marks. Overall,Ryan is traditional English teacher.
Charming and friendly prof. Focuses on the little details of writing that make a great paper. Goes out of his way to make time for you. Would definitely take a course with him again.
Ryan is the best English instructor for people who are terrible at writing. He will show you step by step on how to write each section of the paper. He is also very friendly n easy to approach. His classes are also pretty interesting. Mark Breakdown: Summary - 5%, Essay 1 - 15%, Concept Exam - 15%, Essay 2 - 20%,Concept Exam 2 - 20%, Essay 3- 35%.
Took this course last summer. Ryan is friendly and professional and makes time for you. Actually gives useful feedback rather than just tick, tick, tick. He's def not a pushover when it comes to grading, but he's not impossible to please either. Fair.
Dr. Miller is a great teacher, in fact many professors at Douglas could learn a thing or two from him.He is very approachable and usually has a smile on his face.I hated the thought of taking English in the summer but he made it kind of fun with his goofy jokes and odd articles. I would definitely recommend his class :)
Ryan's class is a bit like boot camp, but he's always available for extra help. Definitely pushes hard but that's what I want. My friend who is at UBC now strongly recommended him.
A sensible and decent instructor! the course is not easy one, but the lectures are understandable. You will learn something with Ryan, which doesn't mean he is not a hard marker.
Highly recommended . He is very clear on what he expects on paper . Attend class , listen and follow his rule . You will be totally fine
I knew Dr. Miller was a kind teacher from past experience, but he also cares for his students very much. I had just asked him a question, and he even responded when it was past 10pm so that we wouldn't have to wait til the next day for an answer.
Really hard class
The novels aren't always exciting but he gives useful feedback and pushes me to be a better thinker. Super charming outside of class.
Great Professor. As long as you show up to class and listen you should do just fine. Be ready to read a lot of books. Over all good class good Professor.
If you want to learn how to write proper academic papers he is the one to go. A tough marker but very fair. Also one of the most helpful professors that I ever had.
Dr. Miller is greater instructor. He does teach how to read, think , write in college levels. Here is how I passed his course: 1. never absent the classes; 2. take noes for what he said in class; 3. after class rewire the notes in a proper way that I would use for the tests. arrange appointment before the paper due, and get feedback from him.
the only problem with his class is that you will have to real A LOT other than that, he's a great teacher!
He is the best English teacher I have ever had in Canada. He will lay out what his grading criteria, and the structure of academic essays for you in class. If English is your second language like me, then take his class for 1130. and may I add he is realy hot.
Nice guy. Very organized and professional. I'm learning a lot. Obviously doesn't like slackers, though, so if coasting is your thing be prepared for a rough go.
Definitely my LAST English course at Douglas. he's super picky in his essay's and omggg it's sooo hard to please him!! I'm a hard working straight A student, but I feel like a loser in his class. So far I'm only getting C+/B- but i plan on getting at least a B as a final mark. Such a disappointment and a GPA Downer!!!
Based on all the raving reviews, I thought this class would be fine since I did well in academic writing, but he is very picky with the marking. Has a guideline of rules that must be followed, so make sure you do. Overall an okay choice, but I wouldn't take another class with him.
Ryan is a knowledgeable prof and you learn a lot in his lectures. In terms of marking, not too brutal for an english prof, but still quite picky in his requirements. You must work hard to get an A in his essays, he does not like slackers. To be successful in his classes, go to his office hours before the essay is due, he gives good feedback.
One of the best English professor at Douglas college. Very knowledgeable and friendly. He actually cares and tries his best to help.
Ryan has had a huge impact on my writing skills. He gives excellent advice on how to write good essays, and he provides precise guidelines/criteria. Some people may find this tedious, but other profs that don't give such specific criteria can actually make students feel lost and unsure of what to write about. One of the best English profs I've had!
I found this professor to be great. His teaching method was informative, clear, and very thorough. Although he is a tough marker, he provides great feedback and is always willing to answer questions. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking to take an english class
Ryan Milller is wonderful prof and i love him, he never gets mad at students no matter how stupid questions student would asked.. He has passion to teach and has big smile... If work hard and attend everyday his class and follow his advise you will do great in his class.. He is very handsome and intelligent, and enjoy his class..
Ryan is really caring and gives you resources or advice to help you do well in the course. He is always open to taking questions or clarifying your confusions. He is not the easiest grader but he has clear grading rubrics so I would recommend to take advantage of his office hours. He is approachable and definitely improves your writing.
Ryan Miller is one of the best professor I've ever had. I took my English 1130 and 1102 with him. I really like his class because he knows how to make it more interesting. He is intelligent and dedicated in his work. He's really approachable and kind towards his students. I really admire his passion in teaching. Very much recommended.
Talks too much about himself. Says repetitive stuff and i found him. Gives of the vibe that he thinks hes a great and well respected prof. Marks really hard. Might find him helpful if you are learning english as a second language bcz he goes over things slowly. overall he does his job as a prof.
Not the easiest prof, but I'd take him again. gave me lots of comments on my papers. Super organized. easy to get a hold of when I had questions and overall nice guy.
Amazing teacher... Probably the best teacher I've ever had and will. However, he is a tough grader but overall if you need to take this course don't think twice and take it with him.
The excellent english professor that Ihave ever seen in my life. The homeworks are on general stuff. He knows that what he do.
Ryan Miller is the best English teacher at Douglas. I tried taking English 1130 before with a different teacher and I dropped the class on the first day. He is clear on his expectations and is always available for any help! He gives good and helpful feedback. Put in the effort and it will go a long way! This class was extremely helpful.
While his grading is harder than most professors, he will prepare you for university level courses. If you expect an easy A, think again. But as I said, the way he marks and does his classes will help you improve in your writing abilities. Reading the books is mandatory and is very helpful outside of class.
Ryan Miller is such a wonderful professor, I was initially very nervous to take an English course but I think this class is definitely necessary especially if its your first year in college. He is caring, funny and makes you want to work for your grade.
Ryan is always willing to give good feedback which is a plus. As others have mentioned he is a tough grader, and I would say almost too tough, especially in the context of the course level. He has strict rules in terms of class attendance and he does give off a bit of a vibe that he believes to a profound prof which is not all that true.
Toughest grader I have ever had. Not approachable at all. Any other English 1130 teacher is a far better bet. Do not recommend his class.
Sir Miller is a very good professor for "technical" writing. Do everything to study those stuff. Finish your paper as early as possible and make tweaks, a visit to his office would come in handy. FOLLOW his format at all times: be formal, be specific, and avoid the "slang" words. Don't forget, keep your creativity intact. Ultimately, he's WORTH IT.
Ryan is a great professor in this institution. His lectures are concise and understandable. Great way of teaching. He allows a participative environment to happen. He helps you to polish your writing skills and does his job well in bringing out the best in you and makes you think critically without pressure. Do your very best and work hard.
Ryan Miller may be one of the toughest markers at Douglas when it comes to an English writing course but the feedback he gives to improve your writing skills is effective. He taught me how to write coherently without the use of slang words which I tended to use. As each essay came to pass, my grade improved as well from a c+ to B and then an A.
He has the best audio recording of all my profs. Like I'm listening to a professional podcast. I will give him that. Very clear tone and pronunciation, etc. But he is a very strict marker. Everything has to be perfect. Based on his side of things, at least he is not a hypocrite. He gives 100% and asks it from you, but too harsh for an into ENG.
My opinion is not based on my grade but how I was treated. He is definitely a hard marker. It was hard to get anything over a C on my writing except for my last essay. He told me to drop the class (even though I was passing) and he doesn't see me doing well. Not something a prof should say when 55% of marks were still available
Probably the best of the online classes I've taken so far during covid. Ryan obviously puts the work in. His podcasts were short and to the point (I downloaded them for my walks) and he gave a lot of helpful feedback on my papers. I never had trouble contacting him. It's not the same as a classroom for sure, but I'd take him again.
Ryan was accessible and clear in his instruction. He gives a lot of excellent correction in regard to writing, although the intensity in which he marks can be off-putting despite the information within his critiques.
I'm not an English major, but Ryan's class was decent enough. While I had to keep up with the readings, essays were straightforward as long as you had some grasp on the material. Only had to read 2 books for the semester and a couple short stories along with discussions in groups during lectures.
Ryan is a good teacher, but I found him to be a very tough grader. His lectures are engaging and interesting. I feel you really have to be a really good writer if you want a good grade. We read 2 novels and a few short story/peoms. I personally wouldn't take another English class with him, as I found another prof I like better.
He is nice and understanding but tough grader. Also, too much to read. Has discussions to post every week. Gives feedback to improve writing. Do the work and you will be fine.
horrible. traumatic.
He is good at teaching but really hard marker. he has a fixed opinions about the novels and doesn't consider student's opinion. Very particular about what he wants in the essays doesn't matter how hard you try, you won't get better grades.
My favourite prof at Douglas so far. Super organized, friendly, and gives lots of feedback. He can be pretty funny too. Would take again.
Ryan Miller is a great professor. Instructions are clear, group discussions are beneficial, and feedback on assignments are well done. Paying attention to lectures is important, and he is fair in helping us succeed in the midterm/final. He is a slightly hard marker, but if you ask for help he is more than willing to assist.
Ryan is wonderful, charming, handsome, funny and one of my favourite English professors at Douglas. His lectures are interesting and helpful for exams and essays. He also wants his students to do well and is very helpful! I highly recommend going to his office hours or talking to him after class. My writing has gotten better because of him! :)
Ryan is good professor who explains things clearly and is very helpful. The reading load was quite heavy but staying on top of it will determine a lot of the grade. His feedback is well thought out and very useful but is a relatively hard grader. Overall, he is well organized and walks you through everything well.
I have taken 2 classes with Dr. Miller, both were easy to follow in class. Outside of the guidance given in class, his papers are relatively straight-forward and the grading will depend on how much you improve based on the previous assignment. Good classes overall, highly recommended prof.
Smug and boring.
Ryan is not an easy marker but you will learn how to write a fantastic essay with him as your prof. Lectures are dry but attendance is mandatory. Ryan is really nice and understanding, generally wants you to do well and allows a 2 day extension on one of your essays which is generous.
Learned absolutely nothing from this guy.
Professor Miller runs a well-organized class with clear instructions. The readings can be heavy, but his helpful feedback and willingness to assist make up for the workload. Unstuck AI was a game-changer for prepping exams alongside the course materials.
He's...fine. Alot of the reviews here are over a decade old and they still speak the truth. Lectures are fairly dry, he's a hard marker and doesn't give great feedback. If you don't know how to write an essay going into this class, maybe don't take it, and lots of reading. Do the work and you'll be fine, but not my first choice
Best prof I've had in my undergrad. I'd 110% take another class with him, his lectures were not boring at all, he made sure to engage with the class and made sure everyone had a chance to participate. The homework he'd give was so helpful when it was time to study since you could practice and see different examples.
It took several graded assignments to figure out what he's asking for. Made reading enjoyable and thought provoking.
