I took this class in the 6 week summer session which was a little hard to do. If I would have taken it in a regular semester I know I could have done much better in that class because the teacher is so nice and he tries so hard to make sure everyone understands. All you have to do is ask if you aren't sure what's going on. Highly recommend him.
One of the most helpful teachers I've ever had. His ability to teach is out of this world. He made stats very easy for me. If math is hard for you, I'd recommend his class because he will take the time to explain it to you. Best math class I've ever taken.
Newell is great, he helped me understand concepts that other teachers just made confusing. He has an interesting way of teaching, and as long as your study and do your homework you should pass the class. He assigned less homework than some other math teachers.
His lectures were very helpful and he gave great examples to help you better understand the material. The class is 4 tests, 4 homework grades, and a final. 70% of your grade is made up of the tests, so be careful. Your own graphing calculator will save your life! We never used the book, but you will need the code for MyStatLab. SHOW UP TO CLASS!!!!
The class itself was hard to grasp, but he was there to help. We spent a whole class going over questions that people had before the final. He was happy to help anyone who needed it and supplied us with graphing calculators if we couldn't afford them so we didn't loose out. You don't need the book, but it helps on your homework.
Great math teacher. Loved his teaching style. He really tries to get everyone to participate and learns everyone's name the first couple of week (which I think is a nice touch) I would take him again for any math class. All the homework is on MyMathLab.
Great teacher, he makes a point to help every student. I highly recommend him. He's an easy going , nice guy that has a way of making math more digestible!
MAT1033 (Intermediate Algebra) Mr. Newell is GREAT. Clear lectures, fair grading scale, easily approachable with questions. Would definitely recommend Mr. Newell!!!
do not take!!!! his notes are power point, as he stated "ESPN" version of textbook. moves quickly. doesnt explain very well .
Very past faced and confusing during lectures, likes to jump from problem to problem wo clear explanation. Tests get progressively harder so you really have to study. Final replaces lowest test grade though which is how I managed to get an A. Did the course in 6 weeks over summer and it was hard. Make sure you do all your homework and good luck.
Explains things rather quickly and can jump around a bit but will ensure that you understand and addresses any questions before moving on. Homework is necessary for learning the material but not excessive. Extra credit on your tests for completing homework. Reviews prior to the final. Final was easier than I expected.
I have never liked or been good at math, but Newell makes it work. This subject can be hard to grasp and I wouldn't take this unless you have to. The notes are great, but the homework can take a long time. Only about 5 tests and 5 vocab quizzes. Midterm and final are SUPER important, but he gives great reviews. If you can take it in class, do that.
I took Mr. Newell for Intermediate Algebra. I haven't taken a math class in 9 years and Mr. Newell made it easy for me to get back in the swing of things. He was clear and encouraged the class to get involved. He definitely took off the typical edge that you normally expect in a math class and made it more enjoyable. 5 tests, 5 HW, and 1 final.
I have stat now and it is not a cake walk. I have a 98% grade. However, you must knock out the homework asap, then get to YouTube, and watch others as well to learn the material. It is a fast moving class. I actually attended his stat class right after ours ended to learn it again.
He nit-pics your written responses, and gives sarcastic remarks towards student when they ask question that he doesn't feel like genuinely answering.
Awful class. Did not understand one thing he taught, and goes too fast when covering material. The only assignments were homework and tests (which were extremely hard, no study guides). Failing this class made me feel so dumb, but when my friends who were excellent in math looked at his assignments, they made me realize that it's not me, it's him.
Good teacher
He's GREAT at explaining math! Very helpful and funny!
This is too hard of a class to do online. However, the homework was too much, worth too little. The tests were impossibly difficult. The schedule was insane! Our last test was one day, & the next day, the final. I stayed up studying so late, I bombed my final and failed by 5 pts. He was nice enough/ helpful but I took someone else & got a B!
Before taking his class, I was really skeptical of Mr. Newell. But after taking it, I would definitely recommend him. He's always willing to sit with you and answer questions. He can be a little hard to follow during his lectures, but as long as you ask questions he's great.
Mr. Newell isn't a terrible teacher but not one of the best. The way he explains the information to the class makes it very confusing. He basically made fun of the class if we didn't know the answer to one of his questions. He wasn't the best teacher for me not being very good at math. I would not take his class again.
Took this class as a dual enrolled student 2013, he was a teacher at my school. I started to fail and withdrew. The whole class actually failed and he had to start from the beginning. His teachings are really tough and he's confusing. He wasn't the best teacher for most of us in that class...
Very good teacher, but you have to pay attention. I goofed off but still passed (somehow). He's willing to answer questions and gives up to 5 extra points on tests depending on your homework grade. He's enthusiastic and likes teaching. If you have the option, take his class in person. It makes it much easier to understand the material.
I did NOT like Newell's teaching style. He goes really fast (which is a terrible thing if you aren't great at math) and if you need help he can be a bit condescending. The homework can take hours and is worth almost nothing when calculating your grade. There were 4-5 tests and a final and hours worth of homework on MML.
If you are looking for a teacher who will even help you the slightest bit i would keep looking. EVERYTIME i asked for help or even had a problem with my math lab because we all know how reliable that is he was sarcastic and rude. He did not care what so ever. seriously good luck if you take his class because you ill need it.
I thought he was a great teacher! Took him for online stats and taking an online courses is difficult, but he answered any questions I had in detail.
Loved Mr. Newell! I am completely terrible, awful with math and somehow managed to actually get a B in his class. He gave extra credit points on tests if you did all your homework. I had to see him a couple of times outside of class and he was very helpful. I would definitely take him again.
Took college algebra online. Class instructions all online, syllabus straight forward easy to follow. Instructor follows up promptly. Class is easy, but it is important to do all hw and quizzes. I missed few hw and couple quizzes, but managed an A because I did well on the final. Final worth 20%. Highly recommend instructor
Tons of MyMathLab HW takes hours to complete-help tools only show how to solve with formulas, not calculator. Use YouTube for HW help to save time & be less confused on tests. HW (280 multi-part problems) 20% of grade, 4 tests 60% of grade, cumulative final 20% of grade. Told to use HW for test prep, but test questions were not similar to HW :/
DO NOT TAKE HIM !! He acts like everyone already knows the material or is just as smart as him. He does not give any kind of review for his tests. He skips through his power points, its almost impossible to take notes in his class. His HW is pointless but worth 20% of your grade, has nothing to do with what is on his tests. AVOID AT ALL COST !
I am taking him for stats right now and let me just say that he is a good teacher BUT you definitely have to study and make sure you know how to use the formulas and how to use the graphing calculator. He isn't excellent but he isn't horrible; BUT get ready to do 80 questions of math homework on MyMathLab 4 times a term.
Statistics is a very challenging math course. The test consists of problem solving with your explanation, and just a few multiple choice combined. Mr. Newell is a nice professor, but just goes through the lectures way too fast and doesn't give any review papers for the tests.
He used to be a high school teacher, but now he's just on a power trip. Even when going out of your way to ask for help, his 'help' is condescending, rude and assumes you should already know the material - completely disregarding the fact that this is an INTRO class. Come on, this is PHSC, not Harvard - the condescending demeanor needs to go.
It is required you buy MML meaning 300 HW Qs every 3 weeks with a 90 Q reading quiz, that you can take twice and the first attempt gives you the right answers, along with a 25 Q test. You teach yourself. BUT he gives an AMAZING study guide. He tells you the type of problem every Q is so you know exactly what to study.
He's very, very rude and cynical. Espically if you are shy and chose not to speak in class. He has said multiple times how he has no patience and cuonstantly repeats negative comments. Would not reccomend this class unless you like being ridiculed. Also don't ever anticipate getting out of class early, he holds you to the last minute or longer.
His lectures are fine, but the Tests are much harder, mostly fill in the blanks. I have a feeling that most of the students in my class did not do well. Some of the students were returned students from the previous semester, which was not a good sign. He expects way too much for Intro Statistics. Take someone else for this course!
lectures are good and help better understand the content grades are heavy geared toward quiz and tests so make sure you know the content in and out
I took Newell's College Algebra online for convenience sake, it would have been better had I just taken it in class. There is SO much homework, and quizzes almost every other day. The deadlines are sudden, and conflict with my work schedule so the class isn't convenient at all. I wouldn't take this class again if you paid me.
Awesome professor. He cares about all of his students and will take his time to answer questions (even if your question is pathetic and he just covered it).
Teaches really well in class, however tests are a lot more difficult. That being said, he takes the time to tell you what you did wrong on the test. Really recommend for those not the best at math. Beware true and false on tests though.
You can not miss a day of this class, you will have a hard time passing because every class is a lot of material covered. The teacher is great, hes funny and not picky about how the test are. He is an understanding person.
Terrible! Just goes over The PowerPoint. The examples in the PowerPoint are easy but the test questions are 10 times as hard! The homework is time consuming! 20 times harder than the tests and PowerPoint examples. Avoid him
Mr. Newell is a great guy. He is extremely smart and knows what he is doing, which at times makes it hard because he has to sort of "dumb things down" for us. He will stay after or come early to help you pass his class or better understand things. He will work with you, he is a caring guy and will do what it takes to help you understand.
The class was already difficult on its own, but I thought Mr. Newell did an excellent job of teaching. He REALLY knows his stuff and is more than happy to go over questions with you as much as you need. Will require a lot of studying time, but if you do your homework and pay attention, tests will be fine. One of the best profs i've had by far.
He makes the math class fun, and he's a very kind person.
He tends to skip over a lot of material. Tests are often different than the material studied in class. I really recommend getting a graphing calculator for this class. Without it, the class is extremely difficult.
Avoid the online class. I hired a tutor, who teaches intro stats at another JUCO using the same text book and it was his opinion that this was an advanced course. The reading quizzes are extremely difficult. There were over 100 students at the midterm and only 30 at the final, that should tell you something!
He is a good teacher that is always willing to help, but this class is difficult to grasp. The homework is a joke because you can do it over and over again, and you have unlimited tries to get your desired grade. With that being said the homework does not prepare you for the tests, and these tests are very hard.
I would NOT recommend this as an online class, under any circumstances. Because personal reasons I took it online and regretted having done so. The curriculum is Pearson, which is hard to follow, inconsistent and hard to understand. The instructor was very open to answering questions by email, which I appreciated. I used tutoring extensively.
Professional Newell was always available for questions and extra help when needed.
Professor Newell is very fair when it comes to grading the test. If your answer is close, he would just give you the points, thats a plus! He stays a little late after class to answer those who have questions and would go over it with you. Study every chapters, and thats all it takes to pass this course. Hes an outstanding A+ professor!
He is a bad teacher. Will not let you take midterm/final at a campus closer so I had to drive an hour. He used a textbook the school store does not even sell so I was not able to have a textbook to help me. Failed all the tests. And learned nothing. All homework is on my math lab and I had to use Help me solve this EVERY problem to learn.
I suck at math and statistics was a class i had been avoiding but its actually not that hard at the pace he takes his class. Something that really helped me was after class going into mymathlab, multimedia, and selecting the chapter and section and there is videos explaining exactly what your learning instead of YouTube. This class isn't that bad!
Very good professor. Math is not my strong subject but he does a good job of making sure everyone understands what is being taught. He'll also ask if their was any homework questions that was confusing before starting class and does them on the board.
He is always willing to help if you are struggling/confused. He is very enthusiastic and funny, so it makes math class enjoyable for once. If you do not study proficiently study for his tests, do not expect to do well on them.
By no means am I good with math but Professor Newell was a great professor. Always explained everything clearly and if you had a question, he'd stop the lesson to answer and explain it. Always asked if anyone had homework questions before the start of the next lesson and would do them in front of the class. Even offered help after class.
Mr. Newell was always willing to help and spend extra time going over material. He made lectures interesting and was always very positive. Definitely one of my favorite professors at PHSC.
Much better math prof than any others I've taken. His lectures are easy, just pay attention. All the HW and quizzes are online through MyMathLab and you can take the quizzes 3 times. The tests are not multiple choice so it forces you to really learn the material but he's more than happy to help before, during and after class.
This professor is really nice and responds quickly when you need help. I took it online and there is a lot of work to do just like any math class. Tests are majority of your grade. midterm is 10% final is 40%. Class is a little hard but im not too good at math so i cant really say much. He does not offer extra credit
The homework is a very small amount of your grade, the rest are all tests. Be prepared for a lot of information in each chapter. It is like taking Algebra 2 all over again.
Professor Newell is a real nice guy, and explains things so you can understand it. Answers questions and goes step by step with anything on the homework in class. Answers emails with explanations. Homework was weighted more than the quizzes, and the final replaced my lowest test score. He gave a study guide for the final which really helped.
Let's say this if you wanted a dancing instructor you found the right guy. He just danced and clapped his hands all through the test. I think he thought it was funny. He also made jokes that were distracting, during the test. I took it online and work was due by 6 pm! Gave me a C. My advice is simply... AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!
I usually struggle a lot in math classes, but this guy made it all click! Lectures are very detailed and easy to understand and apply to HW and tests. Offered weekly lectures for you to get help and ask questions. Taught everything in many different ways that way everyone would understand. Highly highly recommend.
I would highly recommend Professor Newell. My class was held virtually with zoom lectures and exams were proctored via honorlock. He really helps you to understand concepts, and he is receptive to questions and easy to reach through email as well. My class had 5 tests a final that replaces the lowest test grade. The tests are like the homework.
Mr. Newell CARES DEEPLY. If you put in the effort you will pass. If his lectures are too complicated or videos are not enough for you. He will be MORE THAN WILLING to have a zoom / class meeting with you for some one on one help. He provides all the tools needed to help you pass. DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK HIM FOR HELP!
Prof. Newell is super easygoing and always wants to help. This class was remote online and he always took time to explain when someone didn't know the answer. I would definitely recommend him. A little joking in class and always a light-hearted mood.
The class is fairly easy coming from someone who is awful at math. The professor is so nice and caring, he teaches and explains very well on zoom. The homework assignments are easy, it helps you through it if you dont understand. The quizzes are easy as well, you use proctoral but its everything thats on the homework.
A great professor. Had him twice & he remembers his students. Makes sure you're on track&is always reminding his students for due dates weekly. Very understanding that life happens, & helps in anyway he can for you to succeed. Rare seeing professors that care and he for sure is one! MML is a lot of HW which isnt on him- other than that he is great
Wonderful teacher, I'm awful at math but he made learning interesting. He has a great charisma about him and anyone taking his class is sure to enjoy it! ****If you need help reach out to him he WILL HELP!***
He was honestly awesome!! He related math topics to real-life situations which made it a lot easier to understand. Very charismatic and willing to help. Reinforced lessons if students were having a hard time with topics. Guaranteed pass even if you aren't good at math, just pay attention and listen and it all makes sense.
I think Professor Newell is an amazing instructor. He answers questions in class and encourages students to participate. Sometimes he plays around but honestly it's pretty funny and it takes away from the boring course material. If you study you will pass with flying colors. He was considerate when I had an emergency during the final so he's cool!
Sometimes his lessons are difficult to understand but he always ties them back to real life. He's very easy to get along with. HIS TESTS DONT TRY TO TRICK YOU!! He tells you exactly what's on the test (number of questions, calculations, sections that won't be covered). I'm taking his Intro to Stats next!
-he teaches the content really well (did many practice problems on the board) and answers as many questions as you have -print the pwp notes before class, attend all lectures, and study A LOT for each of the tests (tests are weighed high) -you can print a paper version of your mml hw to do your work on and so you have it to study for tests
Took his classes for two semesters and really liked them/him. He gets distracted sometimes but he knows that we're human as well. He really tries to help students understand. This class was definitely difficult but he will try to help in class. You must ask questions!
He was a very individualized professor, he was always very caring and would make sure that anyone needed help would get it. He would assume that if one person is struggling with a topic that others are as well but not speaking up about it and would go into it with detail. He was also willing to come in early and help students who needed extra help.
Great Professor! Final grade is mostly determined by tests, however the tests are exactly what is seen on homework and there is usually extra credit. They are not out to get you -- he wants to see everyone succeed and will help if you need it. Very personable and caring to each individual student, and explains all topics thoroughly with examples.
Overall I have no complaints. As long as you pay attention and do your homework you will have no problem with this class. He is a great teacher and very passionate.
Prof. Newell helped create a great learning experience of calculus for me! His lectures were fun, interesting, and easy to understand. For important topics, he repeated things often to make them easier to remember and use later. The homework can get a little challenging, but he is always ready to help and clear things up for anyone.
I usually struggle with math, but Professor Newell makes it much easier. You can tell he loves his job, he's funny and he makes an effort to learn everyone's names and loves participation. As long as you show up, take notes and pay attention, he is a great, easy Stats teacher. His tests are very straightforward and he does extra credit sometimes.
Hands down one of the most amazing teachers I've ever had. I struggled with math BADLY for years and easily got an A in his class. He is incredibly patient and goes out of his way to make sure everyone understands. Don't be afraid to ask questions, He is the sweetest and most understanding. Will work with you outside of class if you need as well!
Had him as an adjunct professor for an online course. Incredibly fast in responding to emails, and very accommodating! The class itself is based on Pearson, which allows for unlimited retries on homework, making getting a good grade very easy in this class. Definitely recommended.
Took his class because of his reviews. I barely passed calc I geo. Test questions were similar to homework but difficulty was harder. So many people dropped this class! Barely did review for unit tests, included hard word problems on them too. Only passed because final exam score replaces lowest test grade, nice personality, just his teaching style
This professor was so funny and caring, trying to make sure EVERYONE understood everything being taught. He was also really good at prep before tests. Algebra is honestly really challenging in itself so you have to come prepared to learn it all and pay attention. other wise it's an easy class
I would not recommend taking his class at all, but if you HAVE to, do NOT take it in the summer. Trust me, you will regret it!
This class was statistics on steroids.
