I THOUGHT HE WAS VERY ARAGANT AND IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HIS STATISTICAL GARGIN THEN YOU GET A LOOK... JUST ASSUMES THAT YOU KNOW AND EAT SLEEP AND BREATHE STATISTICS....
this dude gave me the obly D i have ever made...ever....he assumes that you already know a lot about Economics..he is very lazy..he makes you bring a scantron for only 15 multiple choice questions...i made a D in this class and then went on to make an A in kosovich's micro class the next semester...enough said
Good teacher, he offers links to the texbook website that are very helpful. He is also very helpful and wants you to understand the material. If you make an A in the class you are exempt from the final
Teacher was awesome! Take him, just go to class and S.I. if he has one.
Let's keep in mind that EcoStats is one of the hardest classes that you will take in College. Dr. Phelps will take it easier on you then any other teacher in the department. He is the ONLY ECO STATS TEACHER AT SFA WHO WILL GIVE YOU A PROJECT IN PLACE OF A TEST GRADE. This is huge and makes almost a +1 latter grade. Phelps is the man
He is a good prof. but he does not spoon feed you the material. If u do not understand he is willing to help during office hours. I strongly recommend going to S.I if u can. Try not to miss class, everyday u will need the notes from the lecture. Use your quizzes to study for the test and u will do fine.
Teaching skills are great, but could slow down a bit when going through the power points. Starts off good then somehow begins to speed up. Might be that he gets into his lesson?
Great teacher. take this class... you will get an A if u study.
Great professor. He relates what you're studying to everyday life which I think really helps. He likes to keep the mood of the class happy and likes to joke around. Take the SI, attend class, and study, and you'll have a guaranteed A. Oh, and don't forget the notecards that are due every once in a while over a Macroeconomices subject, they help out
good teacher, tests are comprehensive, study a lot
good teacher, tests are comprehensive, study a lot
The professor welcomes questions and will answer them fully without any smart remarks.
I really like Dr Phelps teaching style. He goes through the material quickly and efficiently and makes a somewhat difficult subject more easily understood.
his a good prof really tries for students to understand. alot of info to take in. and studying is a must
If you have a problem, you can go and talk to him. He is VERY good with athletes. I thought the over-all subject was hard so it is difficult to say if he was a good teacher or not. Some stuff I think isn't worth learning and some things I thought were interesting. Over-all I would probably take him again.
Dr. Phelps is truely educated on the subject of macroeconomics. His teaching methods may make the class hard, but I'm walking away with a lot of basic economic knowldege. When taking his 231 macroeconomics course, I'd recommend matching the textbook with his in class notes. If you fall behind he's very willing to help you learn outside of lecture.
He is a great down to earth teacher. I took him for Macro and I liked him so much I'm considering taking him for Micro. Have fun.
He and the class were alot of fun. He made it enjoyable and knew alot about what he was teaching. He had a fun personality and i liked his sense of humor. He like everything about his class
He's very helpful if you go to his office. His test are really hard same with quizzes. Do all the homework and notecards. It will help your grade! His reviews are really hard and he doesn't give you the answers. Read the book do the my Econ lab and go to si!
Nice teacher and will help you when needed. Makes the class fun and interesting!
This class is very interesting because of the professor. He has a few jokes to go along with lecture so it makes it worth coming daily. Homework and test are a piece of cake. TAKE HIM!
He is a great Professor, knows what he's teaching. You still need to do myEcon Lab, note cards are great. His exams and quizzes are hard but go to SI, myEcon Lab, and look over your quizzes you'll do just fine. Go to office hours he will help you.
He is a great Professor. He'll help you when you come to his office hours. The test and quizzes are hard but if you go to myEcon Lab, review your quizzes, and look over your review you should do fine.
he is a good teacher i should have applied myself a little more than i did. helps anyone who helps themselves.
He is a good teacher, I probably should of applied myself more. Its a pretty hard class but if you read the chapter and take good notes you will do fine.
Test and quizzes are hard but overall really good teacher
I really enjoy this class, and I always knew if i needed extra help I could get it.
definitely my favorite teacher of the semester/year. very dedicated to helping his students as long as they work for it. great examples and overall just a great teacher. very sharp guy
He is a great professor if you allow him to be. If you show up to class, take notes, and apply youself you will do just fine.
He's a good professor. If you don't understand ask and he will offer assistance. We spent a whole class going over the tax system because some people didn't get it. He's a good teacher you just have to apply yourself. He is strict to his grades though and offers "extra credit" which is a review that you can choose to do. It will help you on the tes
very good instructor
Professor Phelps loves seeing his students succeed and definitely loves the subject he teaches. Also, he grades HW on completion rather that correctness, so if you do the HW then you'll get the points from it.
He's a good teacher.
Dr. Phelps is overall a good teach. The rating I left may not seem like it, but he really is. The class itself is hard, but he does a great job of teaching. He can be full of himself at times, but he is real cool. I would recommend him if you are serious about learning. Attendance is NOT mandatory, but you I advise you NOT to miss a day!
Great instructor will sit down and help you. Just wants his students to succeed and learn the material.
Hard class good teacher willing to help if you ask questions and go to his office. He teaches very fast at times and missing his class to much will cause you to fail.
despite my personal dificulty with the class, Mr. Phelps had very good examples. i would also recomend s.i it helps alot.
he's pretty cool but Econ just wasn't my thing
Dr. Phelps teaching style is very profund and he display a great knowledge on what he is teaching. Dr. Phelps makes the teaching fun, and easy to learn. He does it in a way where we grasp the knowledge and apply it to our daily life. Dr. Phelps is a great teacher
He can be very helpful so long as you go to his office with questions, otherwise he doesn't know how to help. The material he covers is very hard so regardless be prepared to study.
He is a great professor if you pay attention. I sat in the front of the class and met with the SI instructor regularly and for high B's on my tests. If you take him prepare to study for each exam, but don't waste your time buying the book. He provides all the notes you need in class.
Dr. Phelps is a great professor. Very helpful when you seek him in and out of the classroom. His pedagogy is very appropriate for the class. He really wants you to learn the material. Expect to put time into the class
Dr. Phelps is a great professor and truly loves to be in a classroom. He will help and work with you, but you have to take the incentive.
Do away with the Regression Project.
The first half of the class was a review from MTH 220 with a little bit of a twist. His grading helps the students achieve a high grade but if your not motivated you probable won't succeed.
Dr. Phelps is a great teacher! I enjoyed this class a lot and he his very helpful and explains the material very well.
Makes things more complicated than they need to be sometimes. Most things could be explained in simpler terms but he tends to dress it up too much.
This class was better than I expected. The material was challenging, but he made sure that you understand it before he moves on. The material would be easier to comprehend if his slide shows were able to be printed off.
I really enjoyed your class.I think it would have helped if your power points were available to be printed out that way we could focus more on what you are doing on the board
By far the most difficult class i have ever taken, however, Dr. Phelps knows the material very well and his teaching method will make you learn the lessons taught. Great professor although his class is hard. By reading the book after each class and getting together with study groups there should be no problem in passing his class.
Very good class. He wants you to learn the material well, but if you don't want to then stick with the other high school-level courses that are available. I really enjoyed the real life applications we discussed. He does not waste time, attendance not mandatory, and the book is not completely necessary.
He was a good teacher if you understand economics. I was not fond of economics so I had a difficult time in the class. But he was a great teacher and very helpful.
I loved him!! He was also very helpful during his office hours. His SI group was very helpful and the tutor for his class was great! I would definitely recommend taking him for ECO 231!!
He was a very talkitive teacher ,he used powerpoints to lecture his class, and if you need help he will help you.
This class is no where near easy unless you have a thing for economics, but other than that attendance and the use of your book is very detrimental.
the class started off pretty straight-forward, but got way harder. if this stuff doesnt just come naturally to you, you HAVE TO put in extra time and yes, crack your textbook open. but dr phelps is a cool guy, and he's very helpful!
Dr. Phelps is very helpful. He is very clear with his lectures and what he expects from us. He keeps the class interesting and fun as well. I wasn't excited about economics before school started, but after I was in Dr. Phelps class, I actually liked it. I highly recommend taking Dr. Phelps!
The test is not that easy, you have to study hard, go to SI a lot, go to his office. all information you learn you better understand rather than rember them. However, Dr.Phelps is very helpful, but make sure you read the chapter before go to see him, cuz if you don't read it, it is really hard for him to help understand better.
Good professor and good teaching style. This course is one in which you either fully undertand it or you don't. There is no gray area when it comes to the study of economics. Even after discovering late in the semester I did not even need this class, I still worked hard.
Phelps is a great professor, I looked forward to his class. Reading the section in the book before class makes understanding the lecture a piece of cake. My SI was also very helpful! The tests are not easy but he gives excellent quizzes which cover the majority of the questions on the test. I would recommend him to my friends.
Professor Phelps is very helpful. He explains the material and makes sure you understand it. He has office hours. I loved the fact that he has S.I. It helped me alot for the class.
Dr. Phelps is a very good professor. He is knowledgeable, passionate about his field, and engaging. He challenges the student. I have enjoyed his class very much, and look forward to taking more courses with him in the future. Frankly, I wish all of my professors were of his caliber. Recommend him highly.
Dr. Phelps will absolutely be committed to your success as a student--as long as you are committed to his class. He is the kind of professor that will meet you halfway, but demands your respect. To do well: SHOW UP, take advantage of office hours, read the book, be engaged in class discussion whenever possible.
Great teaching style. Makes sure everyone is on the same page before moving on to the next topic. Online quizzes are a little challenging but if you go into his office he will help you. SI section helps a lot, along with showing up to class and taking notes everyday. Tests are not hard at all if you study notes, and go to SI.
Dr. Phelps is a pretty good and humerous professor. I hope to have another professor that teaches as good as he does.
Great professor who wants everyone to succeed. And there's a very helpful SI twice a week!
He was very helpful, and available during his office hours to help answer any questions.
He is a good professor
Good professor overall
I found his passion very inspiring. Unfortunately I did not focus enough energy towards his class however Economics, 8:00 in the morning, fourth floor (stairs only for this young lady), wa my most enjoyable class of the semester.
if you take good notes and go to si, you should fine. Alsoat the end of the semester he drops your lowest quiz grade and exam grade!
Good teacher. Makes subject interesting. Great advisor re majors etc. Reliable in the way he teaches, systematic. Tests are challenging, but he always gives review sheets to help you prepare. Highly recommend him.
Great teacher, he actually had me interested in what he was saying! He does not count attendance against you but you will need to be there if you plan on keeping up in the class. Stay organized and pay attention and you can easily make a good grade. Plus he is always ready to help during his office hours.
Overall Good Professor. Tests aren't too hard as long as you study.
Very challenging class but not too bad to do well. I went to SI constantly throughout the semester and did well on my exams. Have to do one major project but with a group, it is hard at first but then it becomes understandeable and easier. He kinda goes too fast and seems to be a little cranky in the morning. you need the book for the beginning.
Pay attention and you will Pass.
Although Dr. Phelps seems like a nice man and professor, I just never could fully understand what was being taught. I guess economics just isn't my thing. However, this is still a good course with a professor who genuinely seems interested and knowledgable when it comes to economics.
I loved Dr. Phelps! He obviously loves what he teaches and although his tests are tough he prepares you well for them. If you put in enough time there is no reason not to pass.
Great professor! Talks kind of fast when he gets excited about the material but will slow down if asked. He loves what he does and he prepares you well for the class. Pay attention and you will do well!
I loved Dr Phelps! He was an excellent teacher and really made me enjoy economics.
Professor Phelps has really gotten me interested in learning about Statistics. He brings his 100% every day to the classroom and expects everyone else to as well. This class is difficult yet, rewarding.
great professor
Great Professor! Really cares about his students
Get teacher just have to keep up with his book and I recommend SI.
He is very helpful and will answer any questions or uncertainities you may have with the material.
The professor is available after class hours to students.
He is funny
He is a great professor!
Class is very hard if you are not an encon major. I struggled, but Phelps provided help whenever I asked, The SI is also very helpful, it was my key to passing the course.
Phelps is an excellent professor. I watched him countless times engage the guy sitting next to me, who would literally give effort to not care, to impress the girl next to him. Yet the intrigue on his face come class end. He has a firm understanding of his students and profession. Don't mistake my words. To Phelps, responsibility lays solely on you.
dont think i could have picked a better eco stats professor
This teacher was hard, He gave a project as well as homework and tests over the summer, he uses a separate book besides the text book, which he mainly uses but still suggests buying the book for homework he takes from it. He is a tough teacher but has funny moments. Take him and pay attention, that is all.
If you read and study his packet you will do fine. The only reason you need a book in this class is for homework. The first test is hard, but the second test and your project bring your grade up. Don't expect tons of help, not that he dosen't give, but he want's to pull the answer out of you. You will have many sleepless nights in this class.
Although he is a good teacher, he is not very nice. Packet he makes you buy REALLY helps, first test is the hardest so make sure you really study that! And go to class.
good summer class. It was a lot of material for the summer, but I'm glad I took it from him.
He does not dumb anything down, so don't take him unless you're really interested in the subject and pick up math quickly.
The packet he puts together for the class is GREAT!! .. It will help you TREMENDOUSLY!! .. If you don't understand -- ASK! He is always open to answer -- But be prepared to think. He wants to help each student understand Eco Stats. Go to SI for additional help (ANDREW IS AMAZING!). Apply yourself - A 'C' effort will get a 'C' grade!
If you came to class and paid attention and weren't on your phone the whole time and actually put in the work, he was a great teacher and had a very interesting class. I would definitely recommend it to other business majors. Good speed, good teaching, good material. I enjoyed the class.
Great professor, very helpful. If you attend every class, and do the homework, you should be fine.
Dr. Phelps is a really good teacher. I had him for Eco 231 and I really like the way he taught, so I took him for Eco 339. He gives you a packet that we take notes in which is really good and helpful. This class is not as hard as long as you go to every class and take notes. Participate in class in order to help better understand the material.
hard class but SI really helps
difficult, but do-able
Fun class. I would highly recommend reading the chapters before arriving to class. Dr. Phelps uses interesting supplemental information (nice to use something other than the textbook) to make the class more interesting. If you read, go to class, and put in decent effort you'll do fine.
Dr. Phelps is an awesome teacher. He is a major nerd and can be difficult to follow at times, but if you jot down everything he says and interpret it on your own time you should be fine. Grades are determined on how much you work. Those are the classes worth having. I would definitely recommend him to anyone that wants to learn.
I came into this class very intimidated and uninterested. I am leaving feeling like what I learned was both interesting and useful. Dr. Phelp's notebook that we used for class is very innovative. Instead of spending the entire class writing notes and trying to keep up, I was able to fill in the notebook and pay closer attention to the concepts.
he knew his materialand you have to attend class in order to pass the class. it was kinda of hard but aslong a you go to class and SIyou will do fine.
Very difficult class that I did not enjoy. I read the book, studied the study packet, and went to si faithfully and I barely got by.
Great teacher. Great attitude. Very easy to talk to. Helpful outside of class/office hours. SI is also very helpful for his class. BUT!!! Make sure you are in class and listen and take good notes. You will need lecture notes to pass tests. I have no interest in Eco at all but had to take it is req. for my degree. I will finish with A or B.
I really liked this class. The key to passing his test is taking good notes and if you dont understand something just ask questions.
Dr. Phelps's class isn't easy, but he's a great professor. If you're an economics major be sure to take him. He tries his best to help you and he's very passionate about the subject material. I liked him a lot.
Overall an enjoyable calss
In class, SI and exams are talking about 3 different things.
The class isn't easy but if you put in the work you will get a good grade. He interacts with students when teaching to reassure students are learning. Overall, he's a great professor.
He is a very good teacher he just goes through the material a little too fast. His tests are a little difficult.
Doesn't want to help students out. Goes out of way to make things harder.
The effort and time you put into his class will reflect your grade. If you want to learn, Phelps is the man to take.He is passionate about teaching and pushes his students to think bigger!
Very tuned into the class and the understanding you have to be successful.
great guy
Phelps is very good at speaking, however his exams are very hard. Studying, SSI, Office hours, and Homework is a MUST, if you do not understand the subject. Homework is an easy way to raise your grade so DO it, he does not make you come to class, however you will NOT understand much by just looking at your notes. Great teacher and super helpful.
Good professor! Will explain material if you ask. Expects you to actually participate in class. Show up and pay attention and do homework assignments and you should do fine.
Very good professor, loves for you to ask questions and come by his office hours. The only outside work your required to do is aplia which will help. His test are sometimes difficult but he takes feedback in how he can reword the test to help. He's very helpful and I highly recommend taking him
The class itself is tough, but Dr. Phelps does a good job of making the material understandable, as long as you attend class and commit yourself to the material.
A really good professor, very helpful and tries to make the class as fun as possible.
Dr. Phelps is an great teacher with effective teaching methods. You will learn a lot and also pass just do the work!!
He knew the material very well, but went through it way too fast, and expected everyone to keep up. The class averages were sad to say the least, but I'm not saying I helped in that regard.
Tough but a good teacher.
Keep on top of the class and it isn't too hard
Over all he is a good teacher. I enjoyed the class but almos everyone else hated the class. Test are half M/C and half work out and he is a tough grader. If you pay attention in class andgo to SI you should do very well in the class. Oh and there is a group paper that is kinda hard but it is not imposible
great teacher go to class and you will get a good grade.
His tests are hard if you don't take good notes, write down everything on the power points as well as side notes he says and you will be fine. All multiple choice and the online homework rally helps. definitely take him if you get the chance!
He was not very good, I heard other people taking other macro classes and they were making a's so its him who isn't a good professor. It's not the class that is hard, it's his exams. He made them way more difficult than was portrayed
If you take good notes, be prepared with the chapters already read you will do just fine. Online homework assignments are crucial. I totally recommend him.
Awesome professor! He's definetely into economics as a whole and is excited for students to learn about it as well. If you need clarity on anything feel free to ask him. Class participation in discussions really helps when grasping new concepts. Do the online homework and his review quizzes he posts and it will definetely help you out.
Always go to class
Good at teaching in a one-on-one setting but can be slightly confusing in class. Definitely attend office hours if you don't fully grasp the concepts.
Phelps was a great teacher one on one but got confusing in class. The online homework is very helpful, but can confuse you on the tests. Take him over the others, just be sure to go in and talk to him when you can. He really does care about the students. GO TO CLASS!
He's a good professor.
Good profesor.
He knows a lot but is super confusing, kinda makes you feel dumb.
good teacher. made the class easier as he could for someone like me.
Overall he is a pretty good teacher. He only lectures with PowerPoint and the home work is online. It's not a very easy class but hard work will get you a good grade. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't go to class it's really hard to do good on the exams. He is really helpful if you just ask him.
Dr. Phelps is a really good professor. He's really nice and wants to help his students succeed in the class. He always offers help to the students and always wants you to come to him for questions. I recommend doing so because it will help you a lot in the class. I regret not doing it but overall he's a great professor.
I would recommend Dr. Phleps to anyone. Great teacher and great guy. He is passionate about what he does and that comes across in class and his willingness to help students outside of class. Go to class, take good notes and take advantage of his help during office hours and you will do well.
Made the more difficult that it had to be. Extremely arrogant.
He is arrogant, but not a bad teacher. Not a blow off class. Attend as much as you can and ask questions. Look over the homework before class. Go to his office hours. He has an SI too. If you're confused he'll go over more examples, more graphs. He's goes too fast sometimes, but just let him know and he'll slow down. He encourages participation.
He was great but the material is difficult for some. Main advice I must give is to pay attention at the beginning of the semester to get the full basic and thought process of an economist. Do the aplia online and read the chapter because he ask question that make you think.
Dr. Phelps is very helpful and it obvious he loves teaching economics. The class can be challenging at times, especially because of the terminology but as long as you ask questions he will be willing to explain
Very good professor who loves teaching. Very passionate to his career and also helpful if you ask. He wants you to like the subject as much as he does! Just wish I did.
He is a great prof. He makes time for his students and makes it easy to understand.
He was an overall good professor, but seemed like he expected you to get the material a lot more quickly than you could, if you struggle the way I do with economics. His tests were fairly easy, you just had to study a LOT to get a good grade.
He's an intresting character
It's a stats class where you real learn to analyze the numbers and learn what they mean. Phelps is great at relating them to real world situations. Includes humor in his lessons they're not just dry. Occasionally responds to a question with "it's nt that hard" or " this is easy stuff" which is annoying but he'll helo after that.
This subject is tough, but he will help you in any way he can to help you get a good grade in the class.
I honestly don't have any complaints about the class.
Nice guy. It may not seem like it, but he really does love helping students. If you get lost, look back over the packet or read the relating lessons from the book and go see him in his office. He will help. There is a project, but don't stress. It is broken into small sections. He loves helping with these. Packet & SI will help with the 3 tests.
Dr. Phelps loves what he teaches and you can clearly tell that! This helps with learning the material. The workbook you are required to purchase is key to passing the class. Going to his office hours is also great when you are confused.
Great teacher and really knows his information. Just a hard subject! You have to have time to dedicate to really understanding the information.
Don't even think about asking questions.
To pass this class you must have self motivation. Phelps you give you the tools you need to learn, but that is all. He will not push you.
Red booklet of notes offered by Dr Phelps is absolutely necessary.
Tough course and pretty tough professor. Flies through content starting the first day of class and he stays steady flyin the whole semester. GO TO SI FOR THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING! The content takes practice. Oh yeah, don't buy text book. He might even say you'll need it. You definitely won't. Just his booklet.
Dr. Phelps style pf teaching is different then other professors but the man knows his stuff. If you are lost he is wiling to help, just go to his office. I would recommend going to every class and taking notes and reading over them regularly. If you can do that you'll be fine.
Dr. Phelps is an excellent professor. Do not expect to breeze through without doing the work. Comprehension is key. GO to the SI, it's helpful. Read, re-read, ask questions, participate. If you don't understand something, ASK! Take the time to study and work through the graphing thoroughly. Overall, I learned a lot and would take Dr. Phelps again.
He has good informative power-points and spends lots of time on each slide to make sure you have all the information copied down. When he elaborates on a subject though he is not always clear and assumes we already understand the background knowledge.
He good at teaching! but not really helpful and approachable, he aslo seems mean but he is a pretty easy going guy. Be ready to read alot!
Great class. Take him.
Phelps all together is a good professor. Sometimes, he gets a little aggrivated when the class doesn't answer his questions. Make sure you do and understand Aplia and go to SI. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't know something.
Professor Phelps is overall a great professor. The subject matter can be very boring, but thanks to him it's not. He really takes what he teaches and applys it to everyday life and that in itself makes the work you have to put in so worth it. 3 Exams, 15 Online Homework assignments, and 2 quizzes.
Great teacher, knows what he is talking about, easy class if you stay on top of homework and readings. Do test reviews all information that is there is on the test and if you have any questions email him or go into his office he is extremely helpful to students that need it. Funny guy and wants to see all his students do extremely well.
The exams are designed to confuse you and trick you, he will change one worse in all of the answers just to confuse you. If you have an option TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very informative, made complex concepts simple.
You need to read the chapters as you go over them. The test are more in depth than the reviews he provides so make sure you study. You will not skim by in this class with just listening to lecture. (unless you are a genius) and he isnt bad to look at. ;)
Dr. Phelps is incredibly smart and expects the best from his students. Reading is 100% necessary to do well in the class. Go by his office hours! He is very helpful, and wants to make sure that you understand. His office hours are helpful and I sincerely regret not talking to him about my confusion earlier in the semester. Overall great professor!
Dr. Phelps has a good sense of humor and encourages class participation and discussion. He presents information in multiple ways to help individuals connect with material.
Overall great professor. The topic is just not enjoyable.
Dr. Phelps is great teacher. He knows what he's talking about, and breaks it down for you. The material is tough, and you need to pay attention. I took it in Summer 1 and it was a lot of infer really fast. Just read everyday over your notes, and ask questions. He will help, but you have to do your part. READ THE PACKET! IT WILL SAVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is a really funny guy, and he makess the lectures enjoyable. Make sure you work in this class though. Its not one you can sleep through for sure. There is homewor but its not that bad. Make sure you study hard for test. Take this class. He is one of my favorite professors
Take good notes and read the chapters and you are golden
Explains the material well, gives you a good chance at passing.
He expects you to understand whatever he lectures and to think like an economist when you take this class, which sucks because i'm really bad at this subject so asking him for help wasn't useful. He probably gives more work than alot of other professors so if you're a lazy student then this not the professor for you. Study, do hw, no absence.
I took this professor for ECO Stats 339. Its a really tough class but he goes through it at a good pace and makes sure everyone understands before moving on. We had one group project that counted the same as a test, so it could possibly save your grade.
Dr. Phelps knows his stuff but he expects you to know it off the top of your head like we're all geniuses. His workbook is required. Beware of due dates on the syllabus because he won't remind you that often. Be prepared to work on the project at the end of the semester. You'll be alright if your'e willing to put in the time.
Tough teacher but if you pay attention it pays off
My class shrunk significantly as people kept dropping. Class attendance is necessary to pass. Quizzes are online and in class. They are clear set over specific portions of class notes. Same goes with tests. Class notes are fill in the blank from custom book (buy it). Know the material and pass. 1 tough project and 4 tests one is a Cumulative final.
No stats class is gonna be easy, and this class is no exception.
Dr. Phelps expects you to remember everything you learned in MTH 220 (stats). If you don't, the first 2-3 chapters will be really confusing. His quizzes are notes based and the quizzes generally predict how you will do on the exams. The project is really time consuming, and if you don't go to class, everything will be confusing.
teacher gave me and the other students every opportunity to pass. if you don't do well in his class you either slacked off, got too cocky, or this course just isn't for you. because Phelps is hands down the best teacher i have ever had
This class is terrible. You have Aplia assignments due every day at 10:00pm. The professor doesn't help you at all. I recommend you take someone else if you want to pass economics.
Always offering assistance and try to make the class as interesting as eco class could. Easy to pass if you come to class.
He is a really nice guy but not a good teacher. All he does is read the slides during class which makes the class long & boring. He doesn't teach the material, all he does is read the slides & I can't learn like that. It didn't help that I didn't understand economics anyways but it's a pretty hard class. I'd chose a different professor.
I thought he was a great professor! You do need to study but if you go to class and review the notes you'll definitely pass and make at least a B. He explains things great and since this was the first time we used computers for this class we made full use of excel. You'll definitely learn a lot by the time your done.
If u look away for 30 seconds, u WON't understand the rest of class one bit he moves very fast. So be prepared. He acknowledges his speed and tells us to "practice before class". Also, he may put a negative vibe on getting the book, But I warn you if you don't get that book and read ahead starting before day 1 u will be screwed. He's smart though
The class is very interesting but demanding. You need to keep on top of your online assignments. His PowerPoints are very helpful so try to write as much as you can. Do not skip class
Dr. Phelps is a very funny person and was a fun class to take. He is very eager for his students to do well, if they ask for his help. He will allow you to not take the final is you have an A at the end of the third test. He also drops a couple of grades from each section of his course(quiz, test, alia). Overall, I enjoyed his class.
Professor Phelps is BEYOND helpful.. The material is HARD, but he does everything he can to make it understandable. He answers ALL questions quickly and is eager to help. I highly recommend his class if math/econ is NOT easy for you. I struggle with both but learned a lot.
Take Phelps. He uses excel for all the math which is awesome because not every teacher does. Skip one class and you'll be lost forever.
Eco stats is not an easy class for a lot of people. Dr. Phelps works hard to make it understandable & is always willing to help a student (if you are putting in the work, yourself). Heavy excel use in his course, so it will help to at least have the basics of excel down before this class. Fair and caring professor. Be ready to put in time & effort.
Economics, especially applied statistics, is not one of my strong suits; but this prof did a good job explaining the content.
This class is very difficult, but Dr. Phelps is a great professor. Anytime I had a question or an issue, he was prompt in getting back to me. His note packet was VERY HELPFUL!
i did not benefit from the spiral notebook or from the hours of video lectures to watch. after finally getting a tutor adn sticking to the book, i made passing grades instead of failing grades. but by then it was too late to pass the course. so if you are struggling.. get help immediately- don't wait!
Attendance isn't mandatory and showing up to class helps a lot (for notes), but what got me through was going to SI. There will be times where he can go through certain information a bit fast, but going to his office hours or SI and both help. You have to work for the grade you want. There are several little homework grades, and 3 tests & a final.
Loved this class. It's seems pretty scary in the beginning, but after a few weeks you will feel much better about the class. Tests are a big percentage of your grade so studying essential.
Course uses excel heavily. If your decent at math and excel you can get by not going to every class. Multiple chances on homework and he gives practice test exactly like the real exam. Kind of arrogant in class, but if you go to his office hours he's a nice guy. Go to class, pay attention and put in a little effort your almost guaranteed to pass
This is an excel heavy class. That being said he does a good job of teaching you the basics of excel and making sure the class is keeping up. You have to do work outside of the class to understand the material, but its not too bad IMO. If you are willing to put the time into the class you can do well. 4 tests, homework about every week. All online
Watch all the videos and take good notes in the packet! Have a monitor you can use other than the one you are already using, having excel open on another screen is amazing!
I took this course over the summer and it was very difficult. However, Phelps is a great instructor and it is not his fault that the class was so difficult. It was difficult because of the massive amount of material to learn within the short summer coarse. In a fall/spring semester it might be easier.
The class was very helpful especially with all of the things we learned with excel.
I learned more in Dr. Phelps' course than any of my other classes. Although his class is tough, it has been very beneficial.
His notes are very important but most of his exams are not really from notes but your ability to understand the topic. He is good professor and will help you learn during his office hours.
HARD CLASS. His exams don't really match the reviews. There are online assignments which are the only thing giving me hope. He has 3 exams and a final. Each worth 244 points. The lowest exam grade is dropped, and the final will replace that. If your dropped exam grade is a 70 and your final you get a 60, you will get the 60 instead of the 70. HATE
AVOID THIS TEACHER. He rushes through the content every class. It is extremely stressful to try and grasp the amount of content that is given everyday. I attended every class this semester and I had a hard time of a time trying to teach myself this material. His exams are confusing and his reviews are terrible. Final exam is worth TWO test grades!
Phelps is the best option for ECO339. While the class is somewhat tough, the exam prep's he gives you before each exam make it a very doable class.
If you are new to excel you do not want to take this class with Phelps. When you ask questions in class he will just tell you to flip back in the book or ask why you werent paying attention to him doing excel functions extremely quickly.
Great prof/learned alot. Tough class but if you keep up the online lectures & practice the online HMWK until you completely understand then you will do fine on exams. I will admit that he goes over a lot of info in the lectures, very helpful for me to be able to pause the videos as I took notes. Note packet & exam preps a must. Final 30% of grade.
DO NOT TAKE ECO STATS ONLINE. I cannot stress this enough!! I am good at statistics, however, taking this class online was a mistake. It is absolutely inefficient and you are missing out on so many benefits of being in class with Dr. Phelps. I failed this course online, but when I retook this class the next semester, in person, I did much better.
This class was by far my favorite class at SFA. Dr. Phelps was helpful when needed and would answer questions in and out of class. Quite a few Kahoot quizzes, 12 homework assignments, 3 projects(not hard), 3 tests, 1 graded exam prep, 1 final. Do the exam preps for all of the exams. Fill out the booklet in class and study it. Go to Class
Great professor! Heavy lectures, but extremely helpful for the material we reviewed. Highly recommend for students that are motivated, disciplined and willing to do the work.
I took this class online in a summer session, and I made an A. If you are inclined to both math and excel, you will do great. This class is all about time management and participation. I work full time and have no children, but I can see where people can struggle to get through. The test are fairly easy if you do the homework. I learned a lot.
Never actually teaches during lecture, only ignore your questions and expects you to know it yourself
Attendance and notes matter. His online quizzes are impossible there's usually one to two assignments a week. He has three test and a final. I typically study pretty hard and show up to class and can't get above a 75 on either his test or quizzes.
He rushes through the material quite fast. He is easy to see outside of class as long as you schedule it in advance. He seems to even rush through the face-to-face session when I try to meet up with him. It makes me feel like I cannot learn this way.
Worst professor I've ever taken. He generally doesn't seem to care about if you understand his lectures and he makes it as difficult as humanly possible to pass his class. His cumulative final is worth three times a normal exam grade and if you get 20 points lower than your exam average you fail the class. Please for the love of God take Ms Davis.
He is a very intelligent professor, but it seemed to me like he was unable to effectively share that information. His lectures tended to be too fast-paced, and when stopped for questions he could be condescending. There were several online projects mentioned in the syllabus that he never mentions in class, so be careful and follow the syllabus.
I'm not a great student, so this course was very hard for me. I did not study very much outside of class besides doing the homework. I relyed on being 100% focused in class and participating to pass. The tests are dummy easy. The excel templates make everything very easy to get good test grades. Great professor, very caring, very FAST!
He was very rude, lectured but would go to office hours and he would just make me feel dumb. Wouldn't recommend taking him.
in professor phelps class we had one homework assignment a week but it was extremely lengthy and it took up to four hours to complete. If you get a grade on your final that is 20 points less than your average test grades you are automatically failed from the class. If you study hard it is possible to pass but you have to pay attention in class.
This was not an easy subject for me, but Dr. Phelps makes himself available if needed. The class videos were extremely informative and the note packet is such a valuable way to learn the information and have a reference to keep after the class. You will be required to learn the content to excel. You will earn the grade you work for.
Enjoyed the class
Economics is generally tough for everyone. I studied and put a lot of study hours in to then have a D average in all of my exams. I wound up passing the class (barely) but it is still a fun class to take. He is always one email or office hour conference away. He is very knowledgeable on the subject its truly that economics is just a hard class.
This class covers a lot of detail. It is essential that you do not miss class. Just one day missed and you wont know whats going on. Youre in good hands tho. Dr. Phelps is really good at explaining things and helping you to understand.
Do not take him, you will regret it. he deletes his videos after a few days so you cant go back to review them... and he is very arrogant. you have been warned. If you are not good at math you will have to use youtube it is better than his attempt to teach you and makes fun of you for not understanding a concept. 0/10
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! He is a very intelligent man but he is by no means able to teach. He spits out information incredibly fast an expects you to already know it so he doesn't go into much depth about it. Be prepared for the aarc to teach you. He also does not reply to emails quick and if he does reply you might "have to find a solution online."
Do not take this class. I took macroeconomics in high school and understood most of it but when I came into this class i became super confused and lost. He does not specify what's on the test or how to prepare for it. If you fail he simply blames your study habits. He does not explain things well. Good luck if you take this class.
TERRIBLE TEACHER!!! I am graduating from this school and I have never had such a selfish teacher stubborn teacher in my life. Go to office hours.. get called numb and lazy and offers no one on one help. Ask questions? Get an attitude and the teacher makes you feel dumb. Have a Mac for 3339? Oh you must go out and buy a windows or he deduct points.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. I am an all around respected student who does there best to succeed. I have never had such a unprofessional teacher who doesnt care about his students. Went to office hours to discuss the class material and he called me lazy and dumb because he didnt want to explain the best way I should go about his class. Dont do it.
He shouldnt be a teacher. He goes through material as if you already know it and you are just reviewing it. Always has smart comments to make when you ask questions. Makes you feel dumb and under appreciated in the class. Doesnt care about your education and bragged about half his class dropping within a week and fails to help you as a student.
This teacher does care about ur success only the check he receives. I have never met such a lazy teacher who uses lecture videos from 2017 and doesnt engage with his class. He doesnt post announcements about up coming assignments nor test reviews but will post saying come see me in my office. Make an appointment? Calls you dumb and lazy.
Prof Phelps is tough but he does prepare you to pass. You must watch lecture videos and participate in all the data files. Do the exam preps!! those are usually guides to what is on the exam. I started out rough not knowing anything but just breathe its really not so bad.
Nice Guy. The lectures are very heavy. I spent more time in the material for this class than any other. I will say though, if you watch the videos (go to class) you will learn the material better, and your grade will be higher. He is very quick to respond to your questions and emails.
In this class, effort and consistency are expected. To fully comprehend the content, you must watch the videos. Unless you have a question, the face-to-face class is essentially online. Since the tests are brief, make sure you study the homework and exam preparation materials before taking them. You should be fine if you are proficient in Excel.
You need to be prepared for this course. Dr. Phelps expects a lot from his students and is willing to assist, as long as you've done your part. He expects that you have already read the material coming into class and, therefore, does not coddle students. Unless you are strong in statistics, be ready to spend plenty of time working. Learned a lot!
This professor is awful and doesnt care for his students! If you are not good at math do not take this teacher because he expects everyone to know everything already. Always has a smart attitude and will express his negative comments quite frequently! Makes you feel unwelcome and if you are not caught up on material he will not help you.
The most disrespectful teacher I have ever taken. I only did good in this class because I hired a privet tutor. Before hiring the tutor I would go to him for help but he likes to make his students feel dumb and will insult you in different ways and even call you lazy if you dont get a subject! Im warning yall now before you waste $1000.
Like all you must ASK QUESTIONS! He doesn't record the lectures or allows you access to the slides, so being in class matters a lot in order to pass, sure you can read the textbook but no one does that. He actually wants you to learn but you have to work for your grade, there are review sheets available on D2L and the chapters are out of order.
Like Kanye West says: "They say nice guys finish last, it's a good thing I'm a ...". That's him.
Each week there are four hours minimum of videos required. The learning system is terrible. Im sure that is because the settings are set to most difficult. You cannot check your work as you go and there are few examples On learning system. Proc test , examples on lecture are not even close to home work - tons of homework-
If you attend class then you will get most of the information for every test. Some of the information will come from the text book but he outlines everything you will need to know and gives advance notice of when homework is due and quizzes.
Very Confusing in class. Not very easy to follow along with.
As long as you follow along the lectures, this class will be easy. He grades super fair and replies quickly when you reach out to him. I was able to understand the course material better in this course than my statistics and probabilities a few semesters ago.
Worst professor ever!! I would not recommend you to take his class. This professor gives out way too much work and is super inconsiderate.
Without a doubt THE most disrespectful professor I've ever had. Expects you to know everything about the material already. I scheduled a Zoom meeting with him to discuss my grade (I was passing by 2 points) I went in expecting him to tell me what I could do to improve. All he did was lecture me about how easy the class should be. Made me feel dumb.
While the subject is not as difficult I did learn a lot , but! i would be lying if i said i had a good time ,his methods are meh and even though he those care for students his actions and words don't reflect it it feels he looks down on students . So i would not say i learn as much from him more through trail and failure with the assignments.
Professor Phelps was by far the best teacher I had all semester, and made me want to learn about economics.
LOTS of homework in this class. You have to watch the videos (or pay attention in class) or you will not understand the homeworks.
Excellent professor who keeps the class engaged. Provides a "self study guide" for every chapter assigned and it is for a grade. Also has homework over every chapter. Attend class, take good notes, and don't be afraid to ask questions. Overall a great prof and would take again.
He's not awful at teaching the subject but sets you up to fail with the way he presents assignments etc. Is not clear in what he expects. Condescending when you try to talk to him about issues. Way too much emphasis on making sure you watch every second of his videos and copy down everything he says. 10/10 do not recommend.
Dr. Phelps knows his information, but teaches it in a way that is very hard to understand. I have had a few encounters with him, and each time he was extremely rude and dismissive. The workload was a lot, especially in the first few weeks of class. Dr. Phelps is by far the rudest professor I have taken at SFA.
One of the rudest people I have ever met. I absolutely do not recommend taking his class. Very smart person but is extremely rude and sexist. Laughs about publicly humiliating students and shows no remorse for his actions.
Professor Phelps is very demeaning towards students. He would always say "there are no stupid questions", yet every time someone asked a question he would answer them "you should already know this" and make students feel very conscious over asking questions over the material. He goes very fast in lecture so be prepared to feel clueless!
Professor Phelps' ECON339 class can be quite challenging. While the material is interesting, his teaching style and demeanor can make the class frustrating. Utilizing resources like unstuckstudy ai and a private tutor helped me stay afloat. Overall, be ready for a difficult but potentially rewarding experience.
If you excel in structured courses DO NOT take him. Lectures felt disorganized. His attitude towards the students was quite aggressive(many people thought this)and has "You should already know this" attitude. Doesn't feel like a safe space to ask questions. He lectures before exams so you do not get full exam time. Never dropped a class but had to
He expects students to know everything, and is not very helpful with questions and lectures. This class is PURELY self taught. The SI teaches more than he does.
Honestly the worst and most boring class I've taken yet, he expects you to know everything about economics and wants you to work through everything head on and doesn't teach in class rather makes you keep saying random things until he says your correct
This class isn't great for instruction based learners. He expects you to already understand the material like the back of your hand, before you get to class. It is a very much ‘be ahead of me or fall behind' approach. Given if you rely on lectures to learn heavily, this probably isn't the right class.
I enjoyed ECON 1101-002 course with Dr. Phelp. He was a great mentor to have in this field, and I feel I learned a lot. His knowledge in this career is vast, and he challenged us to work harder. He is thorough in explaining the coursework and is always willing to answer questions.
I took ECON1101-002 with Dr. Phelps and can say that his course was beneficial and would love to take another course with him as the professor. I have learned so much, and he was very helpful and made sure we understood all he presented in the course. His class has opened up opportunities I was unaware of that can help my career.
