You will never find another teacher who loves chemistry as much as Sargeant. Pretty easy class.. he curves all tests, does fun experiments (like eating things you should NOT eat and blowing things up). He really cares about his students. Fun guy, don't take from anyone else.
Great great teacher! Made class lectures interesting and informative...very funny always makes fun of movies and is willing to help you in anyway he can! I loved this class from him and would take him again for sure!
I loved this class and probalby have learned more in his class than any other at school

Hard, weeder class for BYUI. However, he was very funny and extremely helpful. Bent over backward to help me out on more than one occasion.
Nice guy, with lots of jokes, but he expects a lot
a deffinate weeder class. rough, but you'll learn a ton and be prepared for chem 106 if you take him. He does make the class somewhat interesting and he's pretty funny.
Has a poor outlook on Biology students, and lets it show. He has a somewhat superior attitude and can be slightly condescending at times. However, he is willing to help almost all the time he is at school, and teaches in class very well. His tests are brutal, though.

really, Sarge is one of the best I've ever had. I hope all my future doctors have had courses from teachers like him because he works his students and helps them see how cool science can be at the same time.
Bro. Sargaent is the man. Anyone that has problems with him needs to get a sense of humor. He is always willing to help and is actually intrested in the success of his students. Of course the class is hard, it's supposed to be. If you don't like that, don't take it. Who want's to go to a doctor or a dentist that can't pass hard classes?
Sarge is the man! I had him for 351 as well. Expects you to know the material. No slack in his class, but fun. He makes things interesting, but you need to have a sense of humor. He really forces you to know the stuff, for all those going into professional fields, he is a must. He takes questions straight from the MCAT study guide, sometimes.
He was a really awesome professor. He really cares about his students and is willing to help you out when you need it. He is tough, but he really wants you to know the material. He is also really funny. Make sure to go to class though.
great teacher but hard
Brother Sarg is awesome. He's hilarious and his class was super interesting. This class is very easy and the homework assignments are simple. He is really opinionated and kind of a know it all but in a funny way. i loved this class!
Brother Sarge is a saint. He is a great teacher, the way he explains things is very simple and to the point, and he EXTREMELY concerned with success of his students, he'll joke and say that's not the case but you can tell he feels bad if you don't do well. Anyone who has a problem with Sarge is dumber than a box of rocks. Do your work and do grea
The classes was fun, but you this learn a ton.
Cool guy, great teacher. I took science foundations on a block, and the work load was huge, but not difficult. There are clicker quizzes everyday, so you need to go to class. Tests are hard, but Bro Sarge makes things easier to understand. He's big on participation, so participate in class and you'll do fine!
He rambles about nothing.
He's so funny and helps you to learn. It's very difficult because frankly speaking chemistry is a difficult subject for most people. However, this teacher helps you to have fun while suffering at least. He is also very helpful and I absorbed almost everything he told me just be cause he makes Chemistry fun.
Awesomest teacher. Enjoys road kills. But I think that's funny. I love the sarge bucks!
This was a block class so there was alot due for each class. If it was spaced out the homework would have been cake! He goes off on tangents but they are fun. He gives you TONS of opportunity to get extra credit. Take him and he'll make class enjoyable. Tests are kind of tough but he curves them!
My only complaint is that he's never taught the class before so he requires more than other teachers. He has easy extra credit projects. He makes the class exciting and shows VERY interesting videos. I thought he rocked! Oh, there's also no textbook. To prepare for class you watch you tube videos and online documents.
Sarge is a great teacher. The class was hard as heck, but that's universal and to be expected. About 30% of the current class was retaking it. Sarge knows what he's talking about and is a good friend and teacher.
All I have to say is, if he can't teach his kid not to eat trash out of the bio-hazard bin, how can he teach me chemistry.
Sarge is a cool guy and hes real fun as a friend but its way hard to learn from him. He only explains things like once and the only thing your graded on is tests. if youre good at taking tests, then its a good class for you. But for me, who is not good at taking tests, this class was terrible.
Bro. Sargeant is a way cool teacher. He is the typical science nerd. He is a young guy who can relate to his students. Does a lot of class demonstrations with experiments. Like blowing things up :) Plus he lets you bring notes to the exams. Even on the final!
I came away from this class with a whole new outlook on the relationship of science and religion. Bro. Sargeant is great! He is funny, and crystal clear, and he makes every class interesting. His tests are pretty rough, but aren't weighted as heavily as some other classes. Just study hard, and you'll love him!
Bro. Saregent has been and seen a lot of things. He is very intelligible. Drops the lowest test score, final is easy. The readings are online, he has notes for class on blackboard. Everyday you have a quiz on the i-clicker which can be done in groups. Lots of extra credit. I would recommend him and no one else! He made class very fun.
i took science 101 from him. he is a way cool guy, but his class sucks. I did terrible on every test because it seemed like the stuff we talked about was never even covered in class or on the assignments. other than the tests the class is pretty easy.
Bro Sarge is super cool. He's a good teacher, and his class is pretty straight forward. Attendance is mandatory because you take a clicker quiz every day, but you don't get points taken away for not being there, you just don't get the points for that day. He knows his stuff and explains it pretty well. He drops your lowest test score too..neat :)
Brother Sargeant was so cool! He's hilarious, which makes for an entertaining class period, and he also loves helping students out with grades as much as he can. He expects a lot out of class members, but that's because he knows that by doing so you'll get the most out of his class. He really knows his stuff!
Sargeant is an awesome teacher! I came away with a whole new outlook on science! He is funny and makes science interesting. There is a little math used in this fnd class. Me not being good at math, a trip to the tutor helped. I still have one more science class to take and it will Def be with Sargeant!
Such a funny guy! Made me laugh each and every day. He says things that you wouldn't expect to hear. He ties in a lot of videos and demonstrations that are actually fun to watch. Loved him! DO THE READING! A lot of what is on the test comes from the readings and preclass assignments. Sargebucks are awesome. Not an easy A, but a great class!
Sarge is the man! Bestand smartest teacher I've EVER had. He really cares about students. O-chem by nature is extremely difficult, but he actually makes it an enjoyable experience. Never get behind, though, or else you'll never catch up. If you work hard, he'll do everything in his power to help you succeed.
Brother Sargent was awesome!! I am terrible at science and came out of this class with a B+. He offers a lot of extra credit and will drop your lowest test score!! I would definitely recommend taking this class. He will make you laugh every day and you will actually be interested in what you are learning.
Awesome teacher that cares about the success of his students, despite all the jokes he makes about them. You will learn more about chem in his class than any other. Gives great opportunities to get extra credit.
Before this course i was close minded and ill-informed. This class taught me alot a brother Sargent is an exceptional teacher. He makes class enjoyable and really cares about Global Warming, but not too much to where its over bearing. He is a great man.
Best teacher I have had by far. I hate Chem but he made me want to come to class each day. Everything is explained so clearly and he makes every class fun. TAKE HIM.
Sargeant is the best! Easy daily quizzes, tons of extra credit opportunities, very clear, funny & interesting teaching. Chem is hard but his tests are extremely fair, and extra credit is offered with every test. The homework is a worksheet every class that takes an hour tops. He is hilarious & does lots of fun demos! Take him!!
LOVE SARGE! Take him! Lost of extra credit, lots of demos, lots of humor.
Sarge is a funny teacher, his class is interesting and i learned a lot. I loved going to class but there is a lot of work and a lot of studying. His test are not the worlds easiest but if you take the time to go and seek help form him he is more than willing to work with you. Class made me laugh and i enjoyed going daily. Highly Recommended.
Loved Global Climate Change with Sarge! You will have fun in this class. Always looked forward to group days. He enjoys the subject and so will you.
Absolutely love Brother Sargeant. He's funny, entertaining, and really engages the class in interesting subject matter. Lots of extra credit opportunities and the tests are fairly easy if you do all the homework assignments. I wish he taught more science classes! I'd take him again if I could.
Offers a TON of extra credit. Honestly, you would have to try really hard to fail his class. Makes it interesting and fun. Really into his science. Great teacher.
One of the funnest classes I've ever taken. It involves a semester-long role playing game where you manage a country. He's hilarious and super goofy. Great guy. Tests aren't the toughest, but require some studying. In-class group assignments. Ridiculous amounts of extra credit. Do the extra credit and the class is a fun, hilarious breeze.
Bro. Sarge's class is really fun (and pretty easy) but you still learn a TON. Seriously, he changed the way I view and interpret science, not to mention he's pretty hilarious. Like everyone else said, there's a ton of extra credit. Take him. He's awesome.
I absolutely love this class. Bro. Sargeant is one of the best teachers BYU-Idaho has to offer. He is absolutely brilliant and knows how to teach. I actually WANT to attend class everyday, and I sometimes wish it was longer! I have never liked science and it's still not my favorite subject but Bro. Sargeant makes it so much fun & you learn so much!
I loved Brother Sargeant! I've never been the best at science but I thought he did a way good job with teaching this class, it was interesting and not too difficult. He doesnt mark attendance but you don't get credit for the in-class assignments if you don't go. He offers a lot of extra credit though!!!! GREAT class, definitely recommend!
By far one of the best classes I have had. He teaches content with a good bit of wit and sarcasm that keeps you interested in the subject. I recommend choosing your group members wisely in the simulation as I got paired with the deadbeats and the only success we had came from me doing all of the assignments and reports and extra credit. Take him!
I went in thinking I would not like the class. I was very wrong! Best teacher ever! Tons of fun, loves teaching, and helps the students love the material. The work is meaningful and fun. No busy work! He is creative and knows how to apply the material to our lives. Never pushes his ideas on you. It is all about thinking about science differently.
This was one of the coolest classes I have ever taken. I had no interest in climate change before but Brother Sargeant makes it super interesting. He has put a lot of time into making this class awesome. He created an entire spreadsheet simulation group project that makes the class both fun and competitive.
Brother Sargeant is awesome and hilarious. Rarely a dull moment in his class and that's saying something for a 2 hour class. The exams can be tricky and really pay attention to detail so pay attention other than that go and enjoy Brother Sargeant because he is awesome!
"Master Sarge" is the best. Highly recommend him. There are 4 unit tests, and 4 unit quizzes, review quizzes everyday, a lab final at the end of the semester and of course the acs final. Some advice: DO THE EXTRA CREDIT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER! yes its a lot of work but the 20 points will cushion your grade for the semester.
Brother Sarge is a decent teacher overall. Beware his tests are very tricky and he will pull from everything to put on test. Not just homework. Work very hard. He is reasonable to a point, but I had difficulty connecting with him but a nice enough guy.
He is so funny! He is a great teacher! Do the readings and the assignments and you will do great on the tests! Pay attention in class!
This seemed more like a weed out class for scientists. If you don't do exactly what is said for a word essay you automatically get an "F" on the assignment no matter how much work you put into the paper.
He is awesome teacher. Lots of extra credit, and He makes class very interesting! I am international student, but I wrote a research paper and got great score. All you need to do is check with TA. They are also very helpful. He is very fun teacher!
Sarg is awesome! He is very clear when he explains things and he understands that Chemistry is difficult, but he makes you feel good when you seem to understand. He offers ridiculous extra credit on every test by reading a book. TAKE HIM! He makes chemistry majors seem like Gods. Cause they are.
The class was fascinating and I learned a lot of things about climate change that I never knew. However, I would not rate the class well. A lot of the class is based around a group project that he throws you into. Part of your grade for this project is compared to your other classmates, which is not fair to you as a student.
Very interesting class! Most of your grade is based off this huge group project, that had nothing to do with climate change. For the group project you have to write research reports and its a PASS or FAIL grade, no matter how much work you put into it. He makes rude remarks about past students, and is a very opinionated person.
Brother Sargeant is very sarcastic and basically says what he wants. He's really funny, but this class was kind of a waste of time. It's okay if you want an easy class that gives a bunch of extra credit (you can do bad on the tests and if you do all the extra credit, you'll probably still get an A, depends on your grade).
Great teacher, sure he can be sarcastic at times, but its all in good fun. I actually learned a lot from this class, the group project really doesn't effect your grade that much. Just put forth effort and you should get an A in this class.
Great teacher, a lot of extra credit, fun class, easy A. I had so much extra credit that I did not need to take the final exam to get an A.
Sarg is one of the best chemistry teachers at explaining difficult concepts. He has good analogies and paints an easy picture in your mind for what is happening. Organic Chemistry really shows you what kind of learner you are because it goes from the mathematical stuff of 105-106 to conceptually visualizing organic molecules and how their reacting.
Great teacher. Teaches much more in depth than the other organic chemistry teachers. His class is great prep for the ACS and for professional school entrance exams.
4 total tests. The last one is a cumulative final. A lot of the class is based on a group assignment that can be pretty tedious because you have to write at least 3 research papers for it. Bro. Sergeant is really funny but very cynical and can be a little harsh, but show up to class and listen and you'll be fine. Subject material isn't hard.
This was a great class. It was more work than I expected, but I learned a lot from it. There are fun in-class assignments and games. There is more than enough extra credit offered. So, you have to work for it, but a good grade is easily possible.
Loved him, just not as a teacher. The homework format given on ALEKs was completely different than what he asks for on tests, and there's a ton of it. Expect to spent 80+ hours for the whole semester doing just the homework. Labs aren't too difficult, and tests are not that fun. He puts many legitimate answers for solutions on tests. See a tutor
Chemistry is a hard subject to study. This class isn't bad. There is a lot of homework but if you space it out, it's doable. The labs are not hard and the tests were tough but if you took the time to study, you should do fine. Plus, he offers major extra credit on tests by reading a book. I really did like him and he made coming to class fun!
I loved taking Brother Sargeant's class. Sarge is hilarious and makes coming to class really fun. There is a lot of homework online, but it REALLY teaches the material. Sarge is very clear in explaining topics and doesn't make you feel dumb for asking questions. Great teacher, helped me really understand chem topics that I thought I'd never get.
Bro. Sergeant is an amazing professor. I could not imagine taking this class from anybody else. Organic Chemistry is naturally difficult, but if you stay on top of your daily homework you will do well. He gives extra credit opportunities and teaches really well. Make sure you get the textbook AND the solutions manual.
Sarge is the best O-Chem teacher ever. He has the best lectures. I don't love O-Chem but I loved going to his lecture everyday. He's going to pull your chain; he's sarcastic and he'll make jokes about seeing you next semester when you have to retake the class but he really cares about his students. Also, he gives the best extra credit.
Sarge is awesome! He is one of the most effective teachers I've ever had and I learned more in this class than any other class I've ever taken. His tests are HARD, so while you may learn more with him, your grade may not reflect it. Take him if you want to learn the most, avoid if all you care about is an A.
Brother Sargeant is one of my all time favorite professors. He is hilarious and has a very well set up lecture that makes Organic Chemistry much easier to understand. If you work hard and want a good professor, take Brother Sargeant, you won't be disappointed. Put in the time now and do well in 351 or you will regret it in 352, I promise.
He puts you in a big group project that lasts throughout the entire semester. I wouldn't recommend him to those who want a light workload, but if you're interested in climate change and be in a group project, then this is the class for you.
Bro. Sargeant is funniest teacher I've ever had. He is very smart, and knows the material. The biggest problem is that he is lazy. He missed 20% (I did the math) of the semester, and used worksheets or students to "teach" us the material, which undermines the value of his PhD. I feel like he would be a fantastic teacher if he were more dedicated.
I would GLADLY take this class from him again. O Chem is a beast, and probably one of the most failed classes on campus. He simplifies everything down to its most basic roots and then builds concepts on top of them. Very funny and understanding guy. I spent many hours in his office just looking at past tests and getting help. wants you to succeed.
Worst Profesor for Organic Chemistry, if you want a profesor that doesnt go to their own classes or office hours chose him! He is a nice guy but a terrible teacher. Lectures over youtube videos are not going to cut it. I dont think he cares about his job that much anymore. Just going through the motions seems like at this point. Pray for him.
I was really worried about O-chem from everything I've heard. Brother Sargeant is great and makes the subject interesting. You have to stay on top of the work though or you'll get left behind. That's more to do with the subject than him. He's also really funny. Definitely taking O-chem II from him.
Brother Sargeant cancels class at least 1-2 times a week. He doesn’t care to help you understand the material. He just does what he has to to get by. His lectures half the time are him talking about his time spent in college. The other half of the time it’s him clicking through a PowerPoint without explaining anything. Try to avoid his class
The two reviews that were posted on March 2nd are false. Brother Sargent is a great professor and has great lectures. He will require you to put in work but that is understandable considering its a level 300 class and that its preparing you for graduate school. If you don't know how to study you shouldn't even be taking a level 300 class
Avoid for OChem. He cancels class at least once a week and expects you to learn on your own. Homework assignment due every day. Class is confusing and mostly pointless cuz he just tells stories. His tests are extremely hard and include material never talked about in class. A lot of students who usually get As got Cs and Ds on exams.
Avoid at all costs. Awful at lectures. Doesn't show up to his own classes whenever possible. Hardest tests I've had. Doesn't help struggling students, instead mocks them. Enjoys being known as a difficult teacher and will try to live up to it to feed his ego. Expends the least amount of effort possible yet expects more than any teacher.
Best professor Ive had. With the bad reviews remember that Ochem is one of the most failed classes. The grading criteria is clear. Tons of office hours and will meet you if they don't work for you. Supplemental lecture videos are fantastic because there is so much information, it is hard to take great notes. Nearly a full letter grades worth of XC.
I have noticed that when classes get hard, people tend to blame the professor instead of themselves. Sarge gives so many opportunities to succeed and do well. He is always available to help and uses humor to make the class more fun. During the Covid semesters he recorded all of his lectures...and people complain about that? 10/10 recommend.
I like Sarge as a person. He is funny and explains things well. He cancels class a lot. He is funny at the expense of students. He makes them feel dumb. Tests don't resemble material in lecture. Im taking this from another teacher, WAY BETTER! If Sarge didnt use outdated question banks and wrote tests based off his lecture he'd be a good teacher.
I don't know how anyone likes his class or thinks he is a good teacher. Huge homework assignment every day. Teaches way more information than all the other teachers. Extremely hard tests. I would definitely recommend someone else for Ochem.
Brother Sargeant is the best professor that I have had during my undergraduate education. He made organic chemistry a humorous experience while providing every resource that you needed to succeed. His tests can be difficult but he gives you so many opportunities to improve your grade. Ochem is hard and ultimately your effort determines your grade.
Probably my least favorite teacher I've had. Makes things way more difficult than they should be and gives huge homework assignments. Makes tests extremely hard and doesn't seem to like his job. Everyone I know who has taken him agrees. I would suggest taking a different teacher for OChem 1 or Ochem 2.
I can see why people think he is funny but when you become the brunt of the joke for the ENTIRE semester, you can only laugh along for so long. It got very old being called dumb in front of my peers. He acted more like the class clown/bully & some people LOVED that. You can tell he'd rather be known for being "cool" rather than kind & caring.
O-chem is a difficult class but Bro Sarge made it a great experience! He gave us "The wheel of doom", which is a summary of all the reactions you have to know. Memorize it and you'll be fine. Sure he made fun of individuals sometimes, but he only did it with people who he knew they'd be cool with it. I think he is hilarious and cares a lot.
OChem is an effort class for almost everyone. Sarge's class is prob the most in depth, but also the best prep if you're planning on any sort of admissions exam (MCAT, DAT, etc). He is super funny and makes class engaging. He also teaches in a very organized/memorizable way, so if you learn best that way then this is the move.
Bro Sargeant is a top notch prof. He knows his stuff and is clear and fair. This is a hard class and he knows it. He is fair with points and errs on the side of forgiveness. Super funny and teaches self dependence.
I loved taking this class from Sarge. He's not the normal type of teacher at byui that gives half-baked spiritual thoughts that take up lots of time. I have averaged around 88% on exams and am going to end with a 98%. He gives a lot of extra credit and he is super funny. He teases students so if you're not good at teasing don't take him I guess.
Dr. Sargeant is an amazing teacher, inspirational, hilarious, and kind. His lectures cover the textbook, so you can read it but I understood it from his lectures. Ask about his Mt. Dew policy.
Brother Sarge was great! Coming from CHEM106, the teaching style and coursework was tough to get accustomed to at first, but by the end of the semester, it really wasn't too bad. Homework is just participation points and you're left to fend for yourselves in terms of exam prep, but if you ask, he will help and the tutors/TAs help lots too!
Sarge is an engaging lecturer who keeps the class fun, but his tests can be brutally tough. Staying on top of the material and using study tools like unstuck AI are key to doing well. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
I loved taking both O-Chem I and II from Sarge. He has a pretty unique teaching style and has amazingly dry humor. However, if you are sensitive he is NOT FOR YOU, because you will get offended at some point. If you like funny lectures and learn well through doing practice problems on your own, then he is for you!
Bro Sarge is my favorite teacher I've had at BYUI. He explains things with great analogies which helps the complicated concepts become simple. He's pretty masterful at taking difficult things and laying it out clearly. He's funny and won't waste your time. 100% would take again.
Sargeant is seriously the best professor that I have had. I took his Chem 351 and Chem 352 courses and the associated labs. I am not very passionate about chemistry but I found myself always excited to go to class because he makes the lectures fun and clear. He teaches you what you need to know in a clear and concise way. I recommend him 100%
Sargeant is funny and is enjoyable to be around. Tests are a huge part of the grade and he is tough on grading the mechanisms. His tests were brutal to be honest. If you do all the extra credit he gives you and you get 85% on the exams you'll probably get an A. No presentations or projects. Just do the EC at the end of the chapters and study hard.
Brother Sargent is a great teacher. His tests can be difficult but on the write on portion of his tests he honestly gives you more credit then you deserve. He also offers a insane amount of extra credit.
I took four classes in total with Sarge. He is not only a caring professor, but also a friend to any student who sincerely wants to learn and succeed. I've never met a person who claimed organic chemistry was an easy subject, but the payoff is so worth it. As far as I'm concerned, there is no better teacher for this class.
