Lectures are long and useless. They don't prepare you for the midterm. Does not assign homework. The only credit are the test which are hard since he does not explain well. He is stubborn so he's hard to talk to. If you looking for an easy a this is not the class for you.
His lectures are redundant, he shoved a whole bunch of information in your face and expects you to know it all. His tests force you to overstudy; gives you study guide but gives random test with material so you don't know what you need to study. Hardly any student involvement just long boring lectures with slideshows. Want to fail? Take this class!
The lectures are scripted and in no way prepare you for tests. Lectures are taught as if you already know the information. You will essentially have to teach yourself the history of Europe. Would not recommend this class.
One of the worst teachers i have ever had. Lectures are incredibly boring with no student involvement. Be prepared to memorize a bunch of terms you dont learn in class for the mid term and final because they are half of your grade. Along with a book review and "participation." If you have can take this class with a different teacher, DO IT.
Professor is hard and unrealistic. Difficult class. Lectures do not support test. Take with another professor. Professor is unfriendly and difficult to speak with. He believes that you already know this material like him so he is super unhelpful. his monotone voice doesn't help. Take with another professor or different school!!!
Don't do it! This teacher is horrible at teaching. Sets you up to fail! The one person who did not find any of these ratings useful is most likely him! This class has unrealistic standards. Its a history class and has to be one the most difficult classes I have taken due to the professor being useless. Seriously take it with another professor or DVC
This class is fine. If you're in the three-hour lecture, it's long (duh). His lectures are really fun and let's you read your own book for a. He also gives a study guide and review session for the exams. He talks to people before and after class and plus encourages you to ask questions.
Mr. Tripp rocks! His lectures and study guides are super easy to understand and the group participation is pretty helpful. He accepts as many rough drafts of the book review as you want. Just go to class and the review session. It's cake.
I don't think that Mr. Tripp is too easy. I had to work hard in his class but did well when all was said and done. I learned a lot from his lectures. The group participation is OK if everyone did the reading. Good guy to talk to about history.
Mr. Tripp is a great professor. Test are doable if you go to class and the review sessions. Study guides I heard are middle of the road. I liked his lectures, learned a lot. No extra credit, though.
The positive reviews below seem to be done by the same person. They have similar ways of typing, plus the scores are virtually the same and they're innacurate to how he is in class. He assigned us two textbooks to buy, which we only used twice for "participation" credit. Roll isn't taken either. Study the study guide.
I dropped his class because his lectures were super boring. So many people would fall asleep in his class. He goes on and on and the class barely talks or interacts with him or each other. This is the first time I've ever had to drop a class. If you have to take this class. Get another teacher!
I think that the lectures are long, but I took the three hour class. Thank goodness there was a break! Some lectures are more interesting than others, but overall good. I liked the book review, too. Do the study guides and participation.
I also felt that the lectures were too long sometimes. I'm not that into early history, though. The class got better with the more modern stuff. I didn't like the dense textbook. By the way, teachers have to take attendance until the final roster which is the third week. Not a lot of people dropped in my class.
I learned a lot from this class. You actually had to read and study, but Mr. Tripp was always willing to answer questions and look over book review drafts. The study guide and review session also really helped.
Professor's syllabus states that if the midterm "median" falls below a certain number, then he'll give regular quizzes instead of the group activities. So I took the class and the midterm median was greater, so no weekly quizzes. Your group has to know about the history of your source. He provides feedback if the group doesn't do well.
Mr. Tripp was a great teacher. He's an adjunct. Whenever anyone asked him a question during lecture, he always says "at the risk of redundancy" and then always redoes the lecture part in different words. I liked how he moves around the classroom and the participation activities. I always learned something new.
Tripp was a good lecture teacher. He gives you the details you need to know and doesn't waste time. His class is entirely reliant on lectures, so make sure you show up. He has three major assignments: Mid-term, book review, and final. So failing/missing one can ruin your grade. He is also very on top of his emails. He responds quickly + helps a lot
Learning is not suppose to be this painful. I say that because Mr. Tripp's lectures are so boring, specially a 9:00 AM morning class. I don't understand how teacher's believe that "PowerPoints" and talking none stop can be a long lasting and effective learning method. Believe me, I try to see the good in everything but he's so impersonal is hard to
I don't mislead people. The class is based on FOUR things, including group activities on "primary sources." The class is based on one to two chapters of textbook READING every week and then lectures with images, music, and some documentary clips at the end. I heard the other 9:00 AM class teacher quit three weeks in, so Mr. Tripp had to teach it.
So I don't know how or why this guy has positive reviews. He is seriosuly a horrible professor! He is literally reading off a PowerPoint and has a mono tone voice. His class is impossible to follow. There aren't many assignments so it makes each one weigh heavier on the points. You're better off taking this class with another professor! Not Tripp!!
I don't know how he teaches at other schools, but Mr. Tripp's powerpoints are outlines. Some students wanted more on the powerpoints in my class, he said ok a few more numbers. I liked him. A great teacher. Each of the four part of the class contain a bunch of drafts and activities.
Learned a lot and participation does matter. So does the book review feedback. Lectures a couple of hours and then group discussion every other week. Smart guy.
I really liked Mr. Tripp's lectures and his images. He allows breaks and then the class does group source work sometimes. The book review workshop gives details about it not on the handout, but that comes in the middle of the semester. I think you can ask for the details at the beginning if you want to do it early.
You have to read the book. Sometimes the lecture doesn't match up with the book, or at least he is really hard to follow sometimes. Honestly the text book is self explanatory and a pretty easy read. Just read the book and you'll be set. Do not depend on the lecture. Also he gives a pretty awesome study guide so you'll be fully prepared for exams.
Tripp is a pretty generous grader although he only has 4 assignments. Show up to class and you will get 100 for participation which will make the class easily. If you are trying to ace his class then you will want to listen to his lectures attentively and takes notes on the words that come from his mouth. Will save you alot of studying
If you put in the time, you will get an A in his class. He practically gives you the answers for the exams, so just memorize them. He is passionate, and his lectures are great, IF you read the chapter before class. He can be hard to follow if you haven't read them. His lectures also vary slightly from the text, so don't miss class.
Ryan Tripp s a great professor. He requires reading due every class about 2 chapters. It is a lecture and note taking class. So taking notes is necessary for the tests. He only gives one paper and the midterm and final. Participation is needed. I would take him again.
I don't know why this teacher has positive reviews. There are only three assignments and pay close attention to his formatting for the essay because he claims its MLA but he will mark you down for following it. He almost always lets us out of class 10 minutes late so don't schedule a class right after this. This class pretty much sucked.
Terrible teacher, hope you never have to take him. So monotone it makes class unbearable.
I like the fact that he is funny, gives out classwork and homework to get points. Don't get me wrong he is a really sweat and caring professor, but for finals you would have to work really hard. He had the class to read all the chapters, but wouldn't tell us what topics were going to be on the test. That is why he wanted us to read all the chapters
He's a good professor. Gives a study guide, but doesn't tell you which parts are going to be on the exam. I read some of the textbook chapters. I heard that he's not assigning a textbook for his other class, but I'm not sure that's true.
Lectures are based on a power point slide, the slide lists off what is going to be discussed. Slides don't contain any notes, the lecture is just him talking. He does not follow the order of the slides and you never really know what you're supposed to be writing down. He goes off on tangents and everything very is unclear. Will lecture all class.
Lectures for 2/3 the time and "participation" for 1/3 the time. Gives good feedback on drafts. There's four parts to the class and things that make up the parts. Knows a lot so adds historians to lecture and participation. Sometimes random but pretty positive experience.
An unbearable class to take; if you have to take a this class please by all means and if possible try and find another professor or DVC. His lectures are so heavy and half the class is asleep, he puts up powerpoints and talks in a monotone voice the whole time, I almost wanted to cry. Its not personal, but his lecture methods are terrible.
He lectures and oversees group source presentations every other week. At the end it was more like every week. You need to read the study guide and go to the review sessions to get points on the exams. Same thing with essay drafts . Some people told him he was the best professor for early mornings and nights. Not sure about that, but good.
Not the best history teacher at LMC. His notes are so unclear and difficult to take since its only him talking without PowerPoints. The tests are easy IF you spend hours studying because its all memorization!
When I took the class, the tests had essays and paragraph answers. Participation and his PowerPoints mattered and so did the book project. I guess attendance is "non-mandatory." I will say there's no way anyone can achieve in the class without actually going to class. I should have received a B but there's no midway grades at LMC.
An overall positive experience. The history is dry at time, at other times downright depressing. Professor Tripp livens it up with stories and explanations. I really liked his lectures. Exam-heavy and participation matters.
Tripp is a good prof to take for the subject of history. Exams are easy and he gives study guides. The difficult part of the class is the book project.
Long lectures but understandable. Two major assignments altogether worth 200 points. If you nail the two paper you will be ok. I submitted rough drafts until he said I had it right 20 rough for each. Maybe less for you. I bombed the final and still got a solid A . He wants rough drafts so give him rough drafts he will help you get to the A.
Don't take any of his classes. Spare your sanity. Would NOT recommend him whatsoever. He gives out the most confusing work, tons of essays- overall difficult and confusing. If only I knew what I am telling you, I would have never taken his classes. If you care about yourself and your mental health, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES. I repeat, do NOT! Thanks.
Mr. Tripp told us he was going to assign two short essays the next time he taught the class, which I guess was this semester. He didn't say anything about giving a final grade before the class ends. We had to do presentations and quizzes. Lots of material and makes it fun. Unlimited rough drafts. Seemed really knowledgeable and progressive.
Ryan's courses should be avoided at all costs!! Please don't torture yourself by taking him. You won't learn anything. Point blank period. The work he gives out is so dumb and un-useful and un-educational on top of it all. I wasted my time. That is non-refundable time. Do not make the same mistake I did.
Professor Tripp isnt bad, however his course is so confusing. Long lectures with very few slides so you have to write everything down. Lots of writing assignments with really confusing instructions. He only grades on these few assignments that are VERY reading heavy so unless you have the time for lots of reading and research I wouldnt take him.
Professor Tripp is the prof to take for history. Exams are easy and he gives study guides. Sometimes he has like ten slides with lots of info, sometimes more with less info. The difficult part is the book essay. I think he's teaching this class and the 29 class this semester.
I dedicated the better part of my life to this class. Essays and rough drafts are the hard part. Exams are NOT easy and not worth as much as the essays. He makes everyone turn in a rough draft and puts the essay due dates before the tests. So while you're studying for the tests you get back your essays. Take the class, its quite an experience.
I took this class during the pandemic so it was fully online. That being said Mr. Tripp has been so understanding and accommodating during this difficult time. I have turned in assignments late and he has always accepted it, he responds back quickly over email and is always respectful even though I turned in my assignments late. Highly recommend.
Professor Tripp is the best History instructor I've had the privilege to work with. Thanks to the professor, I finally found a passion for History and writing long essays. I am in the DSPS program, and he was the only instructor that gave me extensions for assignments that I had trouble with. We rarely had any homework during the semester also. A+
Professor Tripp's class was Discussion Boards every couple of weeks, exams and paragraph rough drafts that amount to an essay at the end of the semester. He only gave two quizzes. The Discussion Board topics are probably the best part, the exams the worst part. Gets back to you really quickly. I think I got a B but not sure yet.
His assignments/quizzes are hard because he rarely ever asks a legit question for you to answer but rather gives you a statement and you have to guess what the actual question is. Does NOT have lectures but reads a paragraph describing what you will read about. He doesn't answer questions if you contact him for clarification. I wouldn't take again.
Save your sanity. 3 hour lectures with mostly talking and few slides. Everything in the class is extremely confusing and the tests are difficult because the questions are worded as a statement rather than a question and you end up having to guess even though he gives a study guide, which rarely helped. I would not take him again.
Mr. Tripp responds to questions more quickly than other teachers. He answered all my questions. He assigns textbook and lecture discussions, rough draft projects and final draft projects that totaled three-fourths of the grade in the class. So the quizzes and tests were a quarter or a third. That was ok for me.
Too few things? There was an essay or response every week. I penned so much! Too much! Let's talk about that! Also, too many slides. However, he delivers informative lectures and gives the book's take, here and there. I found the book tedious and did well enough on exams. Mix of question types. EC for anonymous feedback on class.
Don't take his history class! You don't understand the number of times I cried watching his 2-3 hour-long videos not understanding a thing! For your mental health don't take this class.
Mr. Tripp's lectures helped me more than the textbook did. One lecture part is like an hour, with three parts for one of his "module sets." I think that one of the sets takes 2-3 weeks. I read all the study guide terms from the textbook. Liked the lectures and liked the readings. No thanks to the Discussion Board.
Despite being a history professor he grades harder than any English professor. His own critiques contradict his previous ones/his own directions and will have you going around in circles. Constantly talks about asking questions if needed, but when you ask questions he takes forever to respond and or dances around them so your still at square one.
The professor had a handle on the material and was easy to talk to. I found his class informative and sometimes entertaining. My only gripe was that he didn't give + and - grades for papers and tests.
Professor never gives 100% on assignments. He also responds with paragraphs of comments that don't make any sense. Tests are also pretty hard. I did everything required for the class and still couldn't achieve an A.
An overall positive class. I wrote multiple drafts for the essay project and finally reached A-level. Exams are decent.
The book was way more clear than lecture for the midterm exam. Then the other way around for the final exam. There's extra credit for feedback on the course and I didn't pull punches. I found him off-putting on the discussion and then he gave kind comments when he graded them A+.
A caring and compassionate teacher! He took over when the pressure was on and I'm glad I stayed with it. Highly recommend.
I thought he was a good professor. I learned more from the essay than anything else.
I thought this class was easy. Study guides and "unlimited rough drafts." He has to define that more.
I learned a lot from Professor Tripp, not all for the better. The history got meta but not too much. Exams were tough in my opinion. He didn't move gracefully while lecturing and always hit his legs against the desk. But then he would somewhat connect it to the lecture. I do recommend.
I worked hard on my paper and studied more for this class than any other. The feedback was important and helped me.
Highly recommend. He emails back quickly and spent a lot if time going over material with me individually.
Every assignment is based on a rubric. I didn't receive many comments on the project. But my rough draft was a B at the beginning. Do the study guides.
The class isn't over yet but I learned a lot from professor Tripp. The term paper books were more informative than the textbook.
Most of the time, the professor graded all the essays and exams pretty quickly. I considered dropping early on. Glad I didn't for the most part.
I have to admit that the professor is more than meets the eye, at least in lecture. I recommend getting to know him both online and in person. It's like walking into a park and then halfway through you're in an Escher maze. Same with the class.
Pretty clear with directions and very professional. I think I understood most of the lectures. I'm now concerned about where this is all going. Extra credit for anonymous feedback!
I didn't have access to the textbook and Canvas at first. The teacher loaned me his book and had us study documents from internet archives. No surprises and straightforward history.
I read more of the textbook than watched the lectures. Sticks to the rubrics for all the assignments and is tough on grading.
Accessible with internet meetings and emails back. That shouldn't be a plus but it is. My final grade was B-.
The professor introduced topics of consequence in the discussions and the class dialogue was always useful. Routine assignments after that.
Read the textbook, read all the research sources, read the study guides, give him the outline and rough draft, and you should be fine.
I started reading the textbook and eventually trailed off, but the lectures didn't make me fall asleep. Accommodating late extensions pushed the grade up more than the extra credit.
The essay final is a quarter of the grade in the class. Tripp doesn't grade it until the deadline and eventually gives the extra credit. I wanted to talk more about the essay sources but satisfied.
The professor is very accessible and clarifies material. He grades hard on the essay.
Took over the summer, manageable course load. Very easy to reach and response very quick to emails. Found the course interesting but found Professor Tripp to be intentionally difficult and condescending. He was a very specific idea of what he wants and his criticisms are not constructive. Some of his responses were quite disrespectful as well.
The professor was easy to reach and to talk to. Some of the lectures (not all) were long and he would meet with me for review. His draft feedback was harsh in my opinion. The rubrics and study guides helped. Not totally happy with the outcome, but the summer class satisfied me.
A hard grader until the end. I guess that means he's a good teacher. Then again, he organized the class. Anyways, thumbs up.
Professor Tripp treated me like a student on the essays. On the discussions, the Professor agreed and disagreed with what I wrote. He explained that what he understood my positions and that he provided suggestions to everyone. I prefer that he keep his suggestions to the rubric. I would take again.
The online class fit with my schedule. The lecture narratives adequately explained complicated ideas. I pegged him as more expository than persuasive, which worked for me. Professor Tripp asked for more evidence on every project draft and I never saw 100%, which didn't.
Professor Tripp was amazing! Not the easiest class, but if you really pay attention and dont miss class you should get a passing grade. Alot of talking and lecturing but i enjoyed it, he gives you all the tools and resoruces to pass his class. Would def take his class again and recommend it. Oh and he had GREAT hair btw.
Professor Tripp has addressed every single negative comment I've seen on previous ratings, if you show up, take basic notes, turn in the assignments, put in any amount of effort, you'll pass, he knows his stuff! His lectures are very information dense but he makes them interesting, even for those who aren't history buffs like me.
Professor Tripp was great, You will need to pay attention to his lectures as a trade off for the minimal homework, I found his class engaging and he was not like any of his lower ratings I've read. I'll likely be taking the next section with him.
I took Professor Tripp in person class Spring of 2017. No multiple choice questions during the final and only one essay. He had my classmates and I write about some topics from all his lectures for the final. No study guide. To me it was like a game called "Figure out what will be on the final." The topics were a lot of topics to try and memorize.
In spring 2016 I took his evening class. He gave the test study guide and syllabus to a prof watching him in the classroom. Lecture heavy with tests, take-home essays, book review and participation assignments. I thought the tests were HARD. I don't if that changed.
I found something by Tripp on student masks in pandemic cultures and decided to take the class. Be ready to change your thesis for the project over and over again. Gives study guides and conveys the material well. Recommend.
Reasonable professor in almost every aspect, such as late policy and study guides. As a straight A student, I couldn't understand the essay to save my life and it was the most stressful thing I've had to do. Lectures are hard to follow unless you have an incredibly advanced vocabulary. I kissed my A grade goodbye a long time ago
People do well and everyone knows it. Like most reviewers, I learned more from the lectures and online public podcasts than the textbook. I decided to research my own topic and he seemed fine with it. He also gives questions with source kits, based partly on other professors' input. There's a quiz before the drop deadline. DSPS-friendly.
Professor Tripp was very nice and understanding. The only reason I'm giving 4/5 stars is because for the essay, which is the final, it was so hard to understand what he wanted. The layout he gave us was so specific and I felt like the feedback wasn't very helpful.
Participation and assignments for the semester essay covered about half the class. A separate midterm and final covered another third. Quizzes and study guides with assorted terms rounded it all out. I gave him five for caring.
Amazing professor easy to follow clear instructions easy test on the midterm you can use a study guide no page limited but for the final you use a study guide one side final essay was a bit confusing but gives you lot of time to work on you can turn in as many drafts you want and he will give you Feeback would take his class again!
I took this class online & during the summer. It was definitely demanding as it was a shorter semester. There was weekly discussions requiring reading & writing paragraphs & peer responses. Lectures were pre-recorded. The final written project allowed as many submissions as you wanted, & he would provide feedback prior to due date. Good professor.
could not get out of taking this professor, and it was the most stressful summer of my life. If you're taking his summer course, get ready for that essay. He is VERY picky about his grading and how he wants the material. He does explain each essay paragraph step by step, so that's helpful, but be aware, many of his other prompts are confusing.
Professor Tripp is kind and understands his subject. The tests are hard. He gave us two options for the project, basically his or your own. I would take again.
I took this class awhile ago and enjoyed it. The project assignments amounted to half the grade, but the teacher accepts as many drafts as possible. The exam study guides help with info overload. I walked away with a higher grade than expected, if that matters.
Lectures were weekly and quite long. This class has a lot of reading and you do one large essay. Take lots of notes for his tests. This class took up most of my time this semester but I loved the subject and he was very passionate and knowledgeable. He gave great feedback and definitely wants his students to succeed!
