Just Amazing Guys. i dont usually rate prof's but i had to rate Rylan man. this guys is superb. take him without any doubts
Rylan is by far the best prof I've ever had. The material he teaches is so interesting, you don't even realize when the class comes to an end. He has police officers come in to answer questions students have, which helps apply academic lectures to real life situations. He uses iclicker for participation. I would take him again without a doubt!
Best Prof I've had so far! I love his way of teaching, it keeps you interested and engaged. He does not rely on textbooks and he brings in officers from different departments to have them share their experiences from their careers. Exams are straightforward and easy. He genuinely cares about his students!
Seems too focused on everything other than his students. Also Ryan is very pro police and not willing to hear any other side.
Rylan is probably one of the best profs I've had at SFU. You can tell through his material that he is so invested in his work and truly cares. He specifically states that he's not here to trick you on exams, and uses his lectures to prepare you accordingly. GREAT PROF 10/10.
Prof Simpson doesn't post recordings of his lectures or copies of his powerpoint on canvas so if for whatever reason you miss a class you're screwed. He also goes through slides very quickly. The material is pretty boring which makes it hard to pay attention. Our term paper is worth 25% and we've only had one weekend since receiving feedback
An incredible professor. He cares so much about his students and is by far my fav prof at SFU. He told us what kinds of things to look out for exams and gives a very clear criteria for the research paper He doesn't post slides/lectures, but honestly GOOD! It forces people to come to class and pay attention. We're in university, be responsible guys
One of the best professors I've had. He really wants his students to succeed and he knows the class content well. His exams are also super fair, and the guest speakers he brings in are interesting. Definitely hoping to take a class with him again.
Dr. Simpson is an amazing professor. He's very approachable and makes his lecture and class materials very interesting and relevant. He has clear and realistic expectations. As long as you show up to class, put in effort, and participate, you'll do great!
Crim220 with Rylan was an absolute treat. For a class that is typically pretty dry and boring, he makes it very fun to attend lectures. Ryan was also an amazing TA. Would recommend this prof for any class
Given the circumstances of having to teach via zoom, he did an amazing job teaching. He was easily accessible outside of class and responds to emails quickly. Slides aren't posted online and term paper outline/criteria was a bit broad. But other than that, a really caring professor that wants to see his students succeed!
He is a real nice guy and actually cares about the students. Honestly the class was pretty easy and I put in minimal work. He does not post his slides so you have to attend lecture but other than that he is great. He also brings in police officers almost every week and interviews them so thats nice too.
my fav prof at SFU so far!! He makes very boring materials seem interesting in his lectures. His tests are very easy if you go to every lecture and if you pay attention. He's such a nice and caring guy, excited to take another class with him!
He was super interesting and brought in police officers almost every week for us to listen too. He is super nice and approachable as well. The tests were extremely fair but I do recommend doing the readings because a lot of the content is based off of the readings. No recorded lectures or posted slides so you have to show up.
If you need to take 220, please take it with Rylan. The usual 20+ page research paper is only 9 pages in his class. His exams were very fair and never tries to mess with you, during lecture he'll point out what will be on the exam and what won't. Only downside is that he doesn't record/post the lectures but he's very open to feedback!
Amazing prof! Genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Lectures are straight forward and he wont move on till he knows everyone understands the concept. He made the transition to online school easy for his students. Rylan's class was enjoyable, definitely recommend as a prof to look for during course selection! 15/10
Miss Rylan! He was such a caring professor, wish there were more profs like him! His lectures were actually fun and even brought in guest lecturers by Zoom. Make sure to pay attention during lecture.
Rylan was amazing, he truly cares about what he teaches and cares about your learning and it shows. His passion for his research and teaching makes his class one I would not recommend skipping out on. Just the way he speaks when he teaches draws you in and makes you want to learn. Definitely look forward to taking his classes again.
Not very accommodating to students. Things are online now and he does not upload lectures or slides so if you miss a class, youre screwed Verrryyy lecture based
Do not have too much to say but you're expected to do a lot of readings, listen to a ton of interviews, and 2-3 discussions a week.
His exams are pretty specific. So if you miss lecture, you might lose some questions on the exam. Hes good at explaining concepts but hes a fast talker so its hard to get everything. He gives A LOT of examples and a lot of them are on exams so be careful about that
Professor Simpson is fantastic. He is very knowledgeable and excited about teaching, making every lecture interesting. To do well in the course, all you have to do is attend his lectures. He does not post his slides, but in my opinion, this is a good idea as it incentivizes students to attend.
The professor is really AMAZING.
Make sure to attend lectures and takes notes. If you can do that it's an easy A.
He talks too much and his lectures can be boring. I did not learn a lot from the class and mostly got the info I needed from the books.
Dr Simpson is one of the best professors i've ever had in my 3 years in university. The way he gives lectures and sets up his slides really make it easy for students to follow. Makes it clear to students what they need to do to get a good grade. Accessible outside class and super passionate about policing research
Pretty boring professor with a very monolithic view regarding policing. Does not welcome different perspectives. Goes through the slides too quickly. Does not seem very focused on teaching.
Simpson is one of those profs that you know just love what they're teaching. His clear passion for the field makes lectures both insightful and engaging. Attendance to his lectures is mandatory, given that he does not record nor post lecture slides. Be sure to read the assigned readings too. If you do all this, the course shouldn't be difficult.
Course teaches you a lot about the study of policing as a social phenomenon. This is not a law enforcement studies course, so don't expect to learn too much about how to be a cop. Rather, expect to learn the function of police within society. Professor Simpson is very reasonable. Just show up, try your hardest, and anyone can be successful.
Incredible professor, totally recommend taking any courses he offers, you can tell he is very passionate and knowledgeable about what he is lecturing. For 251 he didn't use a textbook and reviewed papers, a fair amount of which were his own. TA marked easy-ish. Tests are not difficult just go to all the classes for success.
Lectures really interesting and slides are super organized! Easy to follow and well-spoken prof
Rylan is ok as a prof. The material in 251 that he presents seems pretty opinion based and he doesnt even look at counter arguments for certain topics. Like the removal of the fitness testing for officers. He only examined why it should be removed and didn't look at the opposite argument of why it is a good thing. Wouldnt take class with him again
The content is boring but Rylan is nice and good at delivering his information. Slides are useful but you will need to read the textbook to pass the midterm/final. Make sure you remember his examples in lectures because it will come on the exam. He uses iclicker which is annoying but doable. TA was really nice too so overall a good course.
This prof is the GOAT of criminology at SFU. Best professor I've ever had and actually cares about his students. If you want to do well in this class, all you have to do is show up. During his lectures, he literally tells you what is going to be on the exam which makes it easy to study for.
Rylan is a very good lecturer, and speaks very clearly. He does not post lectures online so attend every lecture and take good notes. He also brings in police officers in for panels which gives the course a more exciting approach than just reading material. Rylan is a generous grader and instructs the TA to be as well.
Rylan is the best professor I have ever had. I have had him twice now and they were the best 2 courses I have taken. The seminar format of 458 was awesome as you can get to know one another and Rylan very well. I was a little dissapointed in how difficult he marked the final papers but other than that it was great. He had lots of great guest speaks
Dr. Simpson is an engaging prof who genuinely enjoys interacting with students. He is an excellent lecturer which makes his lectures engaging. His TA selection is also great and can answer any questions that may arise. I highly encourage students to enroll in a class with Dr. Simpson.
I never write reviews but, Dr. Simpson is absolutely AMAZING! I have never had such a straightforward prof who genuinely sets his students up to succeed. His midterm format made me want to cry happy tears because I couldn't believe how to the point it was. You have to show up to class because he doesn't post slides but not the end of the world.
he's literally the g.o.a.t of the crim department, take his class, material was super easy to follow, midterm was a little tough but he does not play with u or trick u, tells u what will be on the exams. TA was super nice, participate in tut for marks, research paper was only 9 pages unlike other classes w 20. solid guy.
His teaching style and care for students is rare in comparison to most profs, it's clear to see his passion for research and made lectures fun. Pacing was perfect & provided lots of examples. Lecture is everything for midterms/finals, textbook is supplementary UNLESS he says certain sections. Super fair assessment, term paper was simple. Very easy.
Show up to lecture and give an honest effort and you will do well. Rylan will make it very clear on what he will test you on. His lectures are organized, and follow a clear line, making them easy to follow and take notes. TAs are told to mark generously and the feedback they give is valuable.
Second class taken with Rylan and he is amazing. Engaging, clear, structured lectures. Sometimes speeds up but always happy to slow down or go back. Need to be there for lectures as they are not recorded but did not mind since the way it is taught. Explicitly states what "may" show up on the exam and 9/10 times it is on there. Fair exams
great prof! exams were fully based on lectures so show up to class and you will do fine one the exams. Exams were fair and easy and maddie was a great TA. i would love to take a class with Rylan again. He uses policing alot in his examples which can get kinda boring as I dont care about policing, but you can tell he loves what he does 10/10
Love this Prof! Probably the best one I've ever had so far!! Rylan is extremely transparent about what he wants from the students and assignments. His midterms and finals were everything he mentioned that's going to be on it, there are no surprises! I wish I could get Rylan as my prof for all my classes!! :)
Very fair & transparent prof. If you attend lectures then you will pass. Lectures are easy to follow, tells you what will be on exams, no tricks or surprises on exams. Paper is 9 pgs but easy. Tutorial was fun and TA's were great. Dr. Simpson is very caring about students success & well-being in this course. One of the best profs, highly recommend!
The best prof I have had yet, well articulated and super clear on what is expected for exams/term paper. Wants and helps students succeed, and very accommodating. Would take again and suggest anyone that has the opportunity to have a course with this prof.
Phenomenal prof. Class was very interesting: Brought in many police panels & amazing lectures that were easy to follow. No textbook required. 2 exams and 1 paper. Must attend lecture for notes, but its worth it. Cares about students in his class, will go over lecture slides for anyone if he was going too fast. One of the best, take him if you can!!
slay!!!
Really nice guy, caring. As long as you attend lecture and study you will be fine. Fair grading and tests, no trick questions
One of the best professors I've had. He's straight forward and tests based on lecture material. Of the little readings that he expects from us, he announces and highlights the topic that he wants us to read on, and even includes the page number and chapter where the information can be found. Very clear grading criteria and is very respectful.
Rylan is a phenomenal professor, I've had him as a prof for two of my courses. He highlights exactly what you need to read in the textbook for exams so you don't have to waste your time reading everything. He tests heavily on lecture material and examples he gives in class. If you attend lectures and study what he tells you, you will do well.
The most deserved 5/5 professor. The lectures are extremely organized and will tell everyone what is on the exam. Wants students to succeed and creates a powerful atmosphere when delivering lecture material. Brings in police panels which give insight into a very real-world experience not covered by other courses or professors.
Attendance is not mandatory per say, however lecture slides are not posted so showing up to lecture is important. Lectures are intriguing, detailed, and Rylan is passionate about what he's teaching. The tests are straightforward and fair. He cares about teaching you something, everyone needs to take a class with Rylan during their time at SFU.
Rylan is a fantastic professor. He doesn't post lecture slides so to do well you have to come to class, however he gives us most of the test questions examples in class. Brings in panels to change up content a couple times, and the grading is only based off midterm, final and term paper. Would absolutely take his class again!
possibly my favorite prof so far. he is very funny and engaging, and he's very clear about what he expects from you and how you can achieve it. the textbook is required but he will tell you exactly which sections to read. his dog is very cute and she is my best friend
prof. simpson is my fave professor i've ever had. amazing lectures, incredibly clear and concise. you can tell he is well-versed on the issues, but does just as amazing of a job communicating the information in his presentation of the material. grading is clear & the class is distributed well! have taken more w/ him & taking again in the future! :)
took this spring of 2023 and if you have even the slightest intrest in policing i would HIGHLY recommend this class. both 251 and 458 were taught amazingly and with passion. the seminar structure was new, but he made it work for everyone. papers and final project are pretty difficult and it is really important to read, but come on its a 400 lvl
LOVE him, best prof, very fair. You must show up to class, nothing is recorded, and slides aren't uploaded. Cares so much about his students, is super engaging, speaks clearly, and encourages questions for clarification. Gives you so many hints about what will be on the exam which is amazing for people who get exam anxiety. No textbook either!!
Great professor, very passionate about the material that he teaches and is there to help you as much as he can. He does not post lecture material on canvas so attendance to classes is mandatory, however, this is a positive in my opinion because he is a very good professor and teaches the materials very well
If you're still questioning if you should take Dr. Simpson's course, you shouldn't. He is by far the most caring and inspirational professor that you will meet. His teachings live up to his expertise and experience. If you're thinking that professors don't want you to succeed, they do, and Dr. Simpson is the man
Best prof I've ever had. Very organized and engaging lectures, interesting weekly readings, very fair with exam questions. Really does want people to succeed in his class. Brings in lots of police officers as guest speakers during the semester. If you have the chance to take him I would absolutely recommend it.
The best of the best. Highly recommended. Best prof at SFU. He makes 3 hours lecture go by so fast. Paper was really fun to write because the was so much information that Rylan provided us with.
This is by far my favourite professor at SFU. You can tell he actually cares about what he teaches. He wants each and every student to succeed in his class
Dr. Simpson is the best professor I've ever had. Not only are his lectures actually interesting, but he goes out of his way to ensure students know what is on the midterm and exam. Furthermore, the TA, Ryan, is a very fair grader on the term paper. On top of that, he brought his dog in for a visit on final exam day!
best prof ever, i love this course and the prof and the ta.
Rylan is the best prof I've had at SFU. He lays out clear expectations for the semester, and honestly cares about students, their grades and wants everyone to succeed in the course. Lectures are mandatory as the exams are almost 100% based on his lectures and he does not post his slides. But if you show up and take notes you'll pass with ease.
has a no league of legends in class policy. goat.
He is an amazing professor and shows he really cares. If you come to lectures and listen to what he says to focus on, then you'll pass this class easily! I would love to take another class with him.
Very good professor, you need to go to class, a lot of people failed the midterm as they did not attend class which was their own fault. His tests are directly based on the lectures word for word so if you attend every week it is pretty straight forward.
Dr. Simpson is an extraordinary professor. His lectures are engaging and easy to comprehend. His personal touch to course material in addition to providing policing panels made this class incredibly enjoyable and resourceful for someone going into the field. His paper and exams are strait forward as long as you attend every class.
Professor Simpson is passionate about what he teaches and cares about his students' success. If you attend all of the lectures, take good notes, and review well before exams, you will be successful. He is one of the best professors I have had, and I hope to take another course with him in the future.
Dr. Simpson is an amazing prof who really cares about the success of his students. You can really tell that he loves what he studies and cares about students. Doesn't post lecture slides, but his classes are super engaging and easy to follow. The midterm and final were exactly what he said it was going to be. Couldn't recommend enough!
I actually had Dr. Simpson for CRIM 488/489 and he was phenomenal! He gives really great feedback and advice on how to do well on assignments that I very much appreciated. He also is very approachable and gives lots of opportunities to ask questions. You can tell he cares about his students and teaches in an engaging way that's very admirable!
Doesn't post lecture slides but makes it super obvious what needs to be known. Taking notes was easier than I initially though it would bet.Great teaching and easy to talk to.
I have never written a rate my prof, but I really enjoyed Rylan's lectures. You can tell how much he cares about his students and how passionate he is about this work and research. He is very inspiring, and although he does not post lecture slides, which forces you to go to lectures, it is sooo worth going since his lectures are really interesting
Dr. Simpson is one of the best if not the best prof I've had at SFU, he is so passionate about what he teaches it's truly inspiring. He cares deeply for his students' success in the course. His lectures will keep you engaged. Attendance is not mandatory, however, I highly recommend to not miss lectures!
He's a great professor, but don't take this class if you plan on skipping any lectures. He does NOT post any lecture slides and gives no exceptions if you miss any classes. The final paper is also handed in hard-copy in person with no exceptions if missed. The class is super engaging and relevant, and he does care about his students.
Rylan gives all the notes during lectures and slides are not posted. If you follow along and write good notes, you will do good in the class. There are articles assigned but he gives you hints on what he will test you during the lecture. His lectures are always interesting as well.
Professor Simpson is one of the best professors I've ever had, in fact he probably is the best professor I've had. His lectures are extremely clear, and are mandatory in order to succeed on the exams. Take good notes during class and memorize exactly what you've written down. He is an extremely engaging lecturer.
Rylan was the best professor I have ever had at SFU. He is truly inspiring and changes the way you think about the world. His lectures were very interesting, I dread coming to school but always looked forward to his lectures. Must attend as he drops many hints about exams. Exams are very fair and assignment was an essay. Best prof you will have
One of the best profs I ever had, I wish I had him for more classes! I feel bad for those who wont get to take him until Fall of 2026 as he just announced this
Rylan doesn't post his lecture slides but don't be intimidated you will learn to take the notes you need on the fly. There is no course text but you can count on amazing lectures, the rare type that keeps you engaged for hours. Please consider taking this course if you are interested in policing. There are many reasons I could list but word limit.
Best professor and class I have ever taken, if you want to go into policing this class will help you in many ways to think like an officer. He is passionate about his teaching, and is such an amazing lecturer who is incredibly talented in what he does. I will make sure to take as many classes i can with him as his classes excite me and inspire me.
Rylan gives engaging lectures despite them being three hours (BUT attendance is CRITICAL since there are no posted slides or recordings). There is no textbook - you have to read a few research articles each week that are in Canvas. He hosts panels which are extremely informative and there is a midterm, final exam, and one essay (5 pages)
Great prof, clearly cares about what he is teaching. Lecture is based solely off lectures and readings. There are no slides posted, so lecture attendance is mandatory.
