I hope you like Math homework.
Very helpful teacher. He wants his students to pass. I will say there is a LOT of homework. But it only helps you on his tests. He gives you a Study guide review a week before the test. If you can answer what's on the SG, then you'll be fine on the test. If the class does bad as a whole, He does offer Extra Credit.
Does a very poor job at explaining the work, and gets upset when you ask questions. His long lectures will make you fall asleep. If you do not already know how to do the mathwork, DO NOT TAKE. You will not learn a thing from this guy.
I would never take a math class with this professor again. He does not explain clearly and is not very helpful when you have questions. If your not very good at math and really need extra help, I don't suggest you take a class with him.
I honestly hate this professor he really doesnt care and when you ask a question he gets mad and makes you feel stupid He is a hard grader and it is very hard to pass his class You learn more from the homework then his lectures I will warn you know don't take this class
Professor is well knowledgeable in this subject, BUT if you don't do enough studying in this class at least 3hrs a day not including homework, good luck in getting a good grade in his class. What makes it worse is how bad he introduces the material, somehow its hard to gain an understanding by the way he teaches, you'll see what I mean. GOOD LUCK!

Doesn't offer help, he is not clear enough when explaining problems. Goes way too fast on the lessons and takes one or two questions per chapter. I would Not take any of his courses again!
He's truly one of the worst AVC professors. Do not take him. He's particular on what he wants on his tests. He gives a study guide and it's not relevant to the test. Super difficult.
ALERT !!! DO NOT TAKE HIM !!!!!!! When he grades your test even though you have the answers right he marks them wrong, !! He puts you down, and says you wont pass you wont pass!! He will NEVER go over the homework in class and he is not clear in his introduction. He says he wants to help the students pass but he has very few opportunities to make up any credit if you fall behind. Also you may have a correct answer on anything and he WILL count them as wrong.
This teacher knows the material but can't teach it well enough. His English isn't good as well so his explanation and test are hard to follow though. The hw and quizzes are online and can only miss 1 class. He also likes to use all the time powering though the chapters and use up all the class time so don't except to leave early.
His tests are tough, you can only use the math he taught in class. I lost points on tests for using the books method instead of his and lost points for it. Try to avoid taking him.
Worst teacher I've taken & my entire class agrees. Extremely unorganized, EXTREMELY picky when it comes to grading. He gets side tracked all the time and uses notation that the book doesn't use which really throws you off when you look back in the book for guidance. I hope the only reason you take him is bc he's the only one who fits your schedule
He's great if you already know the material. If you don't, or if your understanding in mathematics is somewhat well, then you're probably better off with someone else.
I've taken this class from a professor before at this university and struggled in the other teacher's class as it was heavily focused on raw memorization (which is touch in trig since there are so many identities). Osawa focuses more on teaching why things work the way they do, and how to derive the trig identities Know basic algebra you'll be ok.
Not a very good math teacher. He focuses on getting through as much information in class, but is not willing to make sure the students understand the material.
He is very clear on the material you just have to do your part. If you do some of the book problemsexamples you will do well bc they are similar to the problems on the exams. It may help if you participate in case you're ever at a borderline grade. The only reason I got a C was bc I had a course load & wasn't as committed but he's not confusing.
He was honestly horrible. Never take him, he ruined my chances from the beginning of ever passing the class. Save yourself the tears and stress and DONT TAKE HIM.
Not a good instructor to take. I was in a 2 hr long class and struggled to stay awake every day! He does not explain anything and doesn't understand questions when you ask, so there's no point in asking. Don't take unless you are good at teaching yourself.

I took Osawa for Math 140 and Math 220, let me start by saying he is a mathematician more than teacher. You need to do your HW and Test problems with the same passion for math as him. If your an engineer, take him he expects nothing less. Your work should be presentable and understandable, otherwise it is wrong just like in real life or a real job.
He will go through the material and that is it. Don't bother asking him questions because he won't help you. If you want a professor who basically insults his students then this is the one.
IF you tested in and is rusty, don't take him. NO CALCULATOR. His online homework is nothing like his tests. His review is okay but prepare to spend a few hours going over it. NO STUDY GUIDES or PRACTISE TESTS. HE says he give partial credit but only if you but down every piece of information to you the problem. KNOW YOUR FORMULAS.
DON'T TAKE!!! Almost perfect GPA (most A's & some B's) before this guy. DO NOT TAKE! He knows his material thoroughly, but thats all you learn from this class, just that he knows how to do it. He grades on personal preference far too harshely and despite your knowledge you may still fail this class as i am. AbosulteWorst TeacherIHaveEverHad. RUN!!!
Fellow Students, take heed! His class is extremely difficult to pass. We cover one thing in class, we learn another thing from the book, and we learn yet another thing from the review and the tests are completely different since he writes his own tests. With all due respect, I would NEVER take him again. I'll stay extra semesters if necessary. IDC
He's a good and respectable teacher, and he teaches math the right way. He is a tough teacher and you really have to know the material inside and out in order to pass his class. I did enjoy his class, but as I said it is a difficult class that requires many hours of dedication.
Very difficult. he uses his own notation. PROOF HEAVY. Tests are very hard! When you do the homework and compare it to what you are covering in class it doesnt line up and make sense. Homework is graded by 1 or 2 problems he chooses, if you get it wrong but everything else correct you still fail, All work has to be exactly how he wants or you fail.
Notes do not correspond with homework, homework doesn't translate over to test review and the only thing that transfers over to the test are SOME of his notes. Doesn't allow calculators. Will be marked down for using textbook solving methods or any method outside of his teaching. Doesn't make you feel comfortable asking questions.
He is very difficult. You need to seriously pay attention and study almost every night if you want to do well. He is very particular and almost doesn't even need the book since his own teaching methods are self-derived! Not the worst professor, but definitely in the bottom tiers. You're better off choosing someone else.
Professor Osawa is an excellent professor. He is probably on of the toughest math professors at AVC but ensures you truely understand the content and he teaches it very well which can be hard to find in a professor. Take professor Osawa if you intend to achieve a career in math or engineering. His work is very achievable if you put in the effort.
Lectures are mostly about theorems and definitions. The homework will help you with computations and proofs. Quizzes are mostly about definitions. Exams are a mixture of both. Students find his class hard bc they dont understand the definitions however, learning mathematics is more than being able to compute numbers! Study the definitions to pass.
He is the toughest teacher I have ever had in my life. The lectures are the whole class time. If you have questions he asks you to see him after class or during his office hours, then continues with the lecture. If math is not your greatest subject I don't recommend him.
Dr. Osawa is a unique math teacher because he is the only one, so far, who cares about his students because he pushes us to develop critical thinking skills. Many of the things he says are helpful. I have applied his methods on advanced mathematics and my skills have developed very well.
Dr. Osawa is not the best professor out there. He is quite particular and methodical and while that should be a desirable trait in math professors, he comes across as nit picky and brash. Our class discussions digressed often and the atmosphere was full of anxiety and frustration all the time. See him during office hours or fail otherwise.
He is a great teacher. He grades quickly and his expectations are reasonable. He really wants all his students to pass.

A great Math teacher who endeavors to impart his deep knowledge of the subject on students. He explains the concepts and applications relevant to otherwise abstract math laws. He makes you work hard and that translates into building up your math proficiency. A great teacher if your goal is to learn math not just to pass the course!

Tests are worth 60% of your grade so make sure you pass the first couple test. The homework is only worth 10%, but is still important to do to understand.
Tough Grader, teachs the abstract math first before applying, and uses different notation than the book.

This is the worst math teacher, over half his class fails in every class. Imagine trying to learn the alphabet, this man teaches it to you backwards and upside-down. He's so irrational and expects you know everything. He also uses his own symbols and claims the textbook isn't good so there's no way to learn. He is very rude and makes you feel dumb
If you are not a math major, you will struggle in his class. If you are math major who intends to go into pure mathematics, take him for as many classes as you can because his classes will definitely prepare you for upper division math courses such as real analysis or abstract algebra. Personally, he is my favorite professor at AVC.
Let me start by saying Dr. Osawa will prepare anyone who is a math major for future upper division courses. He is excellent at teaching and gives really good exams that truly test your knowledge of the subject. He ensures that after getting through the course you will be ready for anything that is ahead of you. Overall great professor!
He is definitely not the best if you do not know the material before. Basically you have to be a math major to pass his class. If he doesnt like you within the first week, he will constantly pick on you and call you out if you dont know the subject. He doesnt help a whole lot and makes you feel bad if you get it wrong. Highly suggest a dif prof.
I took Professor Osawa for Linear Algebra and Calc III. His lectures are very clear and not rushed. He teaches at an abstract level, but provides plenty of examples. He expects students to understand the material, especially the simpler proofs. To pass, you must understand the material. Memorization doesnt work. His office hours are very helpful.
I have never seen a professor who is so keen on helping students learn. He gets out of his way providing students with in depth analysis of concepts and theories as well as practical applications. He is so dedicated and always accessible for help either in his office or by email. He is demanding. Be ready to work hard and learn math!
Teaches based on definitions and proofs which is fine but he does not provide enough examples to prepare for exams. He will randomly call on students to answer questions. He wants you to ask questions but if you don't word something right, he will make you feel like you're asking a dumb question.
I think of myself to be good at math but Osawa thinks differently. He teaches very abstract math concepts with no examples on how to apply it but thats what his tests are on. He makes you feel stupid if you ask for help and isnt afraid to call you out in class. He criticized past professors because they arent to his standards. Dont take him.
He is an amazing Professor that looks out for his students and helps them in and out of class to clear up any confusion they have within the course. His lectures are amazing and I would easily take him again if given the choice.
I have taken Dr. Osawa for Calc III, Linear Algebra, and now Differential Equations. I really appreciate the time he takes to review your work and to teach math not just as a bunch of formulas but rather using logic and critical thinking. He IS a hard teacher, but the class really challenges you to think and be able to SHOW your thinking on paper.
Osawa is a good mathmetician but not a great teacher. He expects you to have the same passion as he does and explains things in ways that work for him and only him. He just needs to figure out how to relate to students. I spend more time making work look good for him than actually learning the work and he marks you down for that. Not cool man...
Relative to the school's faculty, this man is unforgiving. He claims students aren't adequately prepared to meet his expectations because of "easy" teachers. From his words, he believes embarrassing students is an effective way of teaching. He even told the class he once failed an entire Trig class and is no longer allowed to teach Trig.
You either love him or you hate him. Hes one of the best. Very passionate. My grades my fault, not his. You have to study on top of HW. Hes very open to questions. Can be particular with how work is presented--just be neat. Harsh when you mess up but its because he cares. Dont get offended--improve instead. Dont take if you cant invest 100%.
Honestly very rude at times, every time I say anything in the zoom calls he has to be so condescending and he does NOT like to repeat himself at all. I don't feel like it's an environment to be confident and ask questions while taking his class. We already have trouble understanding the concepts.
The worst! Good teacher for math majors, but not helpful for engineers. MATH220 is his baby and it feels like he treats it like a weeder class. He's a super tough grader, very meticulous about every symbol. Even if u get the correct answer, he will take points away in your work if he feels that you didn't do the right work to get the right answer.
Professor Osawa is one of the most condescending teachers I've ever taken. If you don't do things his way, you get it wrong. I failed multiple tests because of it. And when you do get something wrong, he's super harsh on you for it. He doesn't like answering questions either when asked during lecture. I dropped to save my grade. FIND SOMEBODY ELSE.
Dr. Osawa is a must-take professor at AVC if you are majoring in math. He requires students to follow rules strictly, but its math. As long as you get it right, you will be comfortable with it; otherwise, you may end up writing something wrong. The concepts are abstract, but he gives a great explanation of everything.
TAKE OSAWA IF YOU ARE A MATH MAJOR. As a math major I loved this class, I enjoyed the complex themes and even found myself looking forward to class. But, I can see how this class is not good for any other STEM major. My only issue with this class is that homework is worth so little that it can't make your grade but it can definitely break it.
Okay so math 220 is not for the faint of heart. There were originally 30 in the class and only 10 left at the end of the semester. Osawa is exceptionally intelligent and sometimes can be a bit harsh in grading. BUT the passing grade for this class was a 60% which was really nice of him. He's strict, very quick to email, and wants you to learn.
The worst professor I have encountered in my educational career. I have since graduated from AVC; studying EE. Every negative review you read below is true. The man makes fun of you for asking questions. His difference in notation is extremely frustrating and counterproductive. There isn't enough space in this review to state it all. AVOID!!
Professor Osawa is one of the few teachers I have taken who really emphasizes critical thinking. To pass, it is necessary to understand the math, and be able to present the logic behind it. He will provide extra credit if asked for it. He is an amazing teacher, and I would definitely recommend him for anyone who wants to learn and understand math.
To start Math 220 is not an easy class under the best circumstances. That being said his teaching style makes simple straight forward concepts like determinants seem astronomically harder than they should be. He also will take off with a lot of cheap points on tests if he doesn't like how you did your work even if it is easy to read and correct.
He is literally the meanest person you will ever come across. He belittles you and makes you feel like you’re dumb. When you try to ask a question, he makes it seem like you should already know the answer. The way he talks is just plain rude. Avoid him at all cost. Does not value or care about his students feelings.
I've had him for MATH220 and now CIS121 and I can say Professor Osawa is one of the few professors that is truly dedicated to his craft. His grading can be tough but it's actually helpful because it gets you into the habit of including EVERYTHING(which is just how math is). Very helpful and is understanding of the difficulty of the class.
Professor Osawa is a good teacher and is very generous with extra credit, late hw, and curving tests. Can be rude at times. His study guides are helpful and accurate as to what is going to be on the test. He is a tough grader. Not an easy class, don't expect to coast.

Where do I even start with this teacher? Take this teacher if you truly feel like ruining your mental health. I did not believe when people said that he would dehumanize you. He told me that I did not understand English and that there was something wrong with me mentally for not understanding his concepts. Ignores questions. DO NOT TAKE.
Osawa is a professor who expects you to already know the material before you are in the class and also wants you to be as "passionate" for math as he is because it is "FUN". It seems like he enjoys humiliating students when they don't have an answer and "helping them remember the answers" by doing so. He doesn't like to repeat himself DONT TAKE IT
IDK where to start, doesn't like to repeat himself, Says he doesn't understand questions because you are wrong and says you don't understand because you CANT read. If you do anything in this class that isn't his way you won't get points, Ticks of points on tests for nothing, or because your graph isn't big enough... Take ANY OTHER professor!!!
idk im pretty decent at math so the class was just boring. He would teach for so long and over-explain, then I would google how to solve whatever it was he was teaching, and figure it out in a matter of seconds. He's pretty chill tho imo
So I had him back in the fall but since then retook with another professor and passed with an A. Made me realize he's a horrible professor, and seems to love to belittle people. I remember seeing a TA post that he was posting good reviews here so people would take his class but seems like he got it deleted. AVC should really look into a replacement
I just dropped his course because he didn't want to grade my midterm exam since he said it was late. How can it be late when it's in class and gets collected by him? I understand why people don't like him now and I will have to speak with the dean about this issue. He must love to embarrass students for not understanding and is very rude.
There are students that ask some dumb questions and they would get roasted by the teacher, I always found that funny. He doesn't like students talking in his class during his lectures, he basically told them to shut up (HAHA). His class is difficult but not impossible to pass. He does help if you ask. I think he weeds out the real weak ones.
Professor has good & bad attributes. Willingness to accommodate late assignments shows compassion. Approach to testing needs improvement, could benefit from moderation. Grading standards need to be there but ease off on the rigidity. Complexity of certain topics could be simplified to enhance comprehension. Shows potential for improvement.
He is very blunt with his feedback and it can be hard to take, but I think its cuz he actually cares about you understanding so that you're prepared in the future. Honestly learned so much from him because I was so scared to do bad, but in the end it was for the better. He's not for everyone. Lots of extra credit and study guides were very accurate
As someone who is not the best in math I had a great experience learning from Professor Osawa. He truly wants his students to understand math especially if you need to take higher courses. I would definitely show up as his online lecture notes are a bit difficult to understand. Show him you care and he will respect your time and work.
I wish there was a zero rating. This professor will harass you if you are not good at math. He will yell at you for a simple mistake (he also yells at disabled students). Do not take him. He hardly teaches well and hardly grades your work. He looks at one answer in your homework assignment and will assume everything is wrong and will fail you.
Do not take this guy. Three tests make up most of your grade, and he doesn't give clear feedback. He only underlines what you write and leaves question marks without explaining why. Don't know why he's the only one teaching CS 150. You have better luck taking the course online at a different college if you're in Computer Science.
"A teachers only job is to criticize", this is an actual quote from class. You will struggle, not because the math is hard, but because Osawa does not teach. He writes math on the board and berates anyone that doesn't instantly understand. He does not answer questions nor give constructive feedback. He always finds a way to bad-mouth somebody. 0/10
Very difficult professor does not explain topics clearly and is very nit picking.
This class is not for the weak. If you struggle with math, I urge you to take someone else as this professor expects you to understand on the spot. You CANNOT make mistakes in this class or he will get mad, which is a bit inmature tbh because we are all human and make mistakes. He sucks at teaching, instead of giving feedback he criticizes you.
In computer science, respect to the guy but his expectations and teaching are just terrible. Ill take another professor teaching the same subject in another school before taking one of his classes ever again. If you are taking 3 or more classes 100% avoid because his Hw requires twice the amount of work as you have to write it down on paper.
Professor Osawa encourages his students to ask questions and doesn't shame us if our questions are rather dumb. He doesn't make us memorize formulas but expects us to use our thinking skills to derive the formulas and solve problems.His teaching method is different but those eager to learn math will enjoy it.He expects us to be solid in our skills.
You are expected to think and reason like a mathematician. Exam questions: easier, close to study guide/examples. You are not just graded on your answer, but on how you reason, you will lose many points by missing a statement. Gives good feedback. Know calc/trig! Spends more time teaching theory, can be a good or bad thing. Math majors take him!
