Wonderful person and professor to have. He addresses his topics in a very clear manner and specifically points out what will be on tests (so theres no over-studying!) He make history of life easy to understand and his lecture slides continues to grab the student's attention. I enjoyed every class!!!

One of the best professor i've had a Davis, very good at explaining the material. Went over 300 slides for final review in one lecture and he did it while going over each slide in detail. I also have him for a research position, and he's great. Strongly recommend taking this class with him.

Just when you think he's going to talk non-stop about the importance of rocks, you're wrong! Motani is handsdown, the BEST professor in UCDavis, due to the fact that there is only 2 tests to worry about(no term paper) and how he manages to bring humor into every lectures. Very fun class to have!

I definately recommend taking geology with him! His lectures are clear and he's really helpful. Motani is really specific about what is going to be on the tests so it's easy to study. You don't need the textbook, but GO TO LECTURE!!!

let me tell you .. I HATE ROCKS FOSSILS AND ALL GEOLOGY WITH A PASSION! however, I took this class as a requirement for my major and entered into it expecting to hate it with a vengence. BUT prof motani is sooooo great and he makes geology actually interesting! i loveed it more than ANY OTHER CLASS! definitely take him .. very easy, no book needed

The book is not required. Just attend lectures with your print-out notes. Two midterms and one final. All multiple choice. The average on the exams were high. Easy class.

The class is really easy if you come to lecture and take notes. The grade consist of one midterm and a final. The midterm was straight forward and pretty easy, howeverrrrr.... the final was crazy with an average of 69%! Beware of the final...

Really awesome and funny guy. Knows his stuff and enjoys teaching it. I'm a NPB major and took this for fun. Explains biology better than actual biology teachers. That class isn't bad if you go to lecture. No complaints at all about the course or the prof. Both are really good.

Good class overall, though if you have taken Bio 1B you may be bored. Motani was a good lecturer, though printing lecture notes used a LOT of paper. Exams are mostly straightforward multiple choice, with a few questions that you will only know if you go to class. Nice guy during office hours. Notes can be hard to decipher if you miss class though.

Straightfoward multiple choice exams, but you need to memorize the notes extensively. Exams are all based on lecture, not book so don't buy it. Just go to all lectures and take down notes of things he say. Helps to make outlines before the exams and list out all the important info.

Awesome prof, my favorite at davis by far. The class is very straightforward and motani is well organized. Dont buy the book, its never used, just attend lecture and take good notes. Mostly all the exam questions are off the ones from his slides. Highly recommended.

Take him!! You wont regret it. DON'T BUY THE BOOK. You WON'T need it. Most of the test is based on Q&As given on lecture slides. He posts the Power Points, but theyll be hard to understand if you missed class. 40% Midterm & 60% Final. Mult choice. Dont be fooled by how easy the midterm is, cuz on the final, the answers wont be as obvious. Awesome professor.

Good teacher, very clear.... the midterm is 40 multiple choice and 40% of the grade, the final is the same but with 60 questions... DONT be fooled by how easy the midterm is... STUDY for the final, it is much harder than the midterm. also, going to class is not mandatory but is very very helpful.

the first two midterms were pretty easy, just study from his study questions. The last part of the course had a lot of species name and could be overwhelming, so study early... btw, each question that you miss is aprox. 1% of your grade, 2 exams, 30% each, final was 40%, the final could hurt ur grade if u don't study for it enuf.

omg very easy class! study lecture questions and know the big concepts in class. when he gives you the list of names, all you have to do is recognize which species is what and why its important and you're golden! class was not curved because ppls were just doing too well but if you know your stuff it wouldnt matter. great professor!!

The lecture topics are really interesting and I'd say he's a pretty good lecturer overall. Midterms and final are really easy as long as you go over his notes. There is no curve, average in teh class is about an 85-87%. I'd highly recommend him.

Awesome teacher and he really IS funny, some people just don't get it. I find his class enjoyable and his accent is less than other professors I had to deal with. Just attend lectures and study the name list he gives you. Interesting class and of course he can't answer all questions; the subject itself is still being researched. Easy A.

He is a really nice teacher. I had no problems with his accent. He is really funny! The class isn't an easy A. There are 3 exams which add up to 100 points. Each question is worth 1% of your grade. You have to memorize LOT of Latin names.text is not needed. The book is totally pointless because 100% of test info comes from the lecture.

I was looking forward to this class, but he made it way too confusing. It was too easy to miss points on the exams, costing you a lot in terms of your grade. He does extra credit of obscure facts like his favorite exotic cuisine is the tunicate. Pay attention to that stuff. Do not buy the book. You won't need it. Go to lecture.

To do well you need to attend class. His powerpoints don't include text unless its a species name so finding out what the point is requires attending lecture. Also he does not podcast so I would recommend getting a podcaster. Hes really helpful in OH. Don't take the class as a joke because it is difficult to get an A.

Everything is good about his class, except he is a "traditional" teacher. That is, no podcasts, not self explanatory slides, no practice exam. And one time he gave a silhouette quiz, but I turned it in during lecture time (i skipped to do the quiz) and he did not give me the extra credit. Besides that.. can't complain about multiple choice.

Easy A class. Mostly interesting. Funny guy, very knowledgeable about the subject. Tests are MC, and some questions you just need common sense. If you paid some attention in class, you will get a decent grade. Need to know some details to get 100% on test.

Prof. Motani is pretty awesome. His lectures are really interesting and I enjoyed going to them! (And you have to go to them, this class will be impossible if you don't.) His tests are all MC and fair. He gives you the terms which is great. I definitely recommend taking this class!

do not think this class is easy. definitely one of the worst classes i've taken. material is hard unless you like memorizing taxonomical terms of fossils and during which era/period they existed. if you do take it, get your hands on some previous tests because they help a lot. he only has 100 pts in the class so each point is a % of ur final grade

I regret taking his class. He refuses to curve, post podcast, and has poor lectures that consist of mainly pictures which don't help much during the exam. I wish I had taken another bio elective.

The class wasnt bad, you do have to memorize ALOT. Dont wait till last minute to study especially after the second midterm. the only thing that I didnt like was that every question on the test is worth 1% of your grade, and he doesnt curve, so be really careful and dont underestimate his class.

Prof. Motani is pretty great. He is nice and funny in a nerdy kind of way, and his accent is cool. I enjoyed going to lectures. Yes, attendance is mandatory, but lectures are interesting (unless you just don't like the subject). Don't buy the book, it is not used at all. Exams are based solely on lectures.

Don't be fooled by how easy the mid term was. Final is 5 times hard. Lectures are compulsory, he only puts pictures on the powerpoint slides. I would say not an easy GE class.

Professor Motani is very knowledgable about the subject, and teaches it with skill. Lectures, however, are definitely required, as his powerpoint slides are usually elaborated upon in class, but lack important points on their own. But if you come to class, take notes, and have some interest in the subject, this will be a rewarding class.

Motani is hilarious, intentionally or otherwise. GEL 107 was super easy, would definitely recommend taking it with him. Some of the lectures are boring but he tells you almost exactly what will be on the tests, so it's easy to study for them. Also, pay attention to his silly little stories, because he asks about them on the final for extra credit.

I love Prof Motani. His accent is amazing and he tells really funny stories. He lectures straight from PP. Go to lecture and go to OH if you have questions-he's super helpful. Best way to study for exam: find lecture Q that corresponds to term list and make sure you can answer the question. Class takes work, but is good.

I was quite surprised how empty the class was in terms of sign ups, seeing as how funny and interesting Prof Motani was. The class is like Bis2C for those of you who took it, but much much easier. Just answer the lecture questions he has during lectures and you'd do fine. He has a nice accent and you don't fall asleep so easily. Take the class!

2 midterms, 1 final all MC. Class was not mandatory but he does not podcast and his slides are just images so you have to go to lecture to understand material. As long as you attend lecture, exams are easy. All exam questions are straightforward and directly from lecture. No textbook required. He has a cool accent too.

Good lecture and very reasonable multiple choice tests. He gives you a list of any names that are on the test so you will know what to memorize. Lectures are a must because the powerpoint slides he posts online are not very helpful pictures with very little text.

Professor Motani was one of the best professors I've ever had at Davis. He gave study guides for all the tests, and makes it very obvious what questions he'll be asking on the test. If you put in effort, you will do well. The lectures are not boring, and he's really funny and personable. Take this class with him if you have the chance!

I absolutely loved this class! Motani is super interesting and he tells some funny stories. The grade is based solely off of 1 midterm and 1 final, and many of the questions are specific to what he said in lecture. He posts lecture slides online, but there is almost no detail on them, so if you want an A go to class.

I would highly recommend that professor since his class is REALLY REALLY organized. He spends about five minutes reviewing previous lecture and give what he's gonna talk for today in order. There are many pictures in his slides without words so you might need to be focused and take notes. As long as you put efforts, it is an easy A class

He could get his clarity to a 5 if he clarified the lineages and grouping of just the dinos just we needed to know. He offers funny extra credit questions to his final and really cares about the subject. Yay Motani!

Dinosaurs class! Easy if you study. 2 midterms (30 questions each, 30% each) and a final (40 questions, 40%). He gives you the questions and the answers in class. If something isn't clear, just ask. Very approachable. Most kids got a B, but I don't know why because extremely easy to get an A. He curves, and gives extra points on final.

This class was DUMB easy. The average grade for Fall 2015 was like an A-. When does that ever happen?! Take this class. Exam questions are based on the questions at the beginning of every lecture. Take good notes, because his slides are mainly pictures. Motani is HILARIOUS and has a great accent. 10/10 would recommend.

Professor Motani is amazing! He is adorable and structures his lectures in a very clear format so it's really hard to miss any important material. He is very passionate about dinosaurs and curves every test. There are 2 midterms and a final. He also gives bonus questions on the final! Don't bother buying the book. Best professor I've ever had at UC Davis! I'm so glad I decided to take this class instead of EVE100 for the evolution requirement. You will never be bored in his class! He tells hilarious stories and he is just so nice! BEST CLASS EVER, and I'm not even a geology major!

Didn't need the book, no homework ever. All I had to do was study for the 2 midterms and Final Exam. Tests are not cumulative and he is very clear about what you will be tested on. Gracious with the curves.

Motani is awesome! This class is really easy, no need for the book, just show up. He posts his slides online but sometimes they don't really make sense without hearing him explain it. Generous curves. Very approachable professor. Loves Jurassic Park. I am taking another of his classes next quarter and minoring in Paleobiology now!! Take his class!

Studied by podcasting, taking notes and making flashcards. Day before midterm, I would meet up with a neighbor to talk about all the main points. Super straightforward questions, 2-3 tricky ones. It starts to get interesting once he starts with dinosaurs. Never forget Tiktaalik. gotta go to class because the slides are mainly just pictures.

Take this class! Professor Ryosuke is awesome! He's great at lectures. He literally gives you the questions for the 2 midterms and final before each lecture he gives. Best professor at Davis in my opinion! Take him if you want a chill class but make sure you go to class because if you don't then we'll the exams will be harder than they need to be.

He is definitely my favorite teacher at Davis, and I can safely say that as a fourth year. Decently easy class. Just make sure to use his study guides and review his slides before the test, and you're good. His accent is the best thing since sliced bread, and "so on......"

Wouldn't take again

You must like paleontology to take this class. It is mandatory to go because the slides only have pictures and you MUST take notes. For each block you need to make a phylogeny tree of 15 to 25 species, and memorize it for the test. He is not flexible, has an accent, but he knows the topics and explains them really well.

This is my second class with Motani. Although I did not care for this class as much as I liked GEL 12, I would still take another class with him. He set up the class much in the same way, although this time we had to fill in stratigraphic trees on the midterms and final which seemed impossible. Really hurt my grade. Luckily, he offered easy 5% EC.

Mr. Motani is an amazing professor, as a humanities major I haven't had a STEM class yet that I felt totally engrossed in. Admittedly, it is a class about dinosaurs, but it's not too easy. Tests are hard and require a lot of memorization, but other than that the class is fascinating. Absolutely worth taking.

Professor Motani is filled with enthusiasm for dinosaurs. Materials covered up to midterm 1 is relatively easy as you have not delved into different types of dinosaurs yet. But, the material between midterm 1 & 2 is a lot of info, which means memorization. Not too hard, but still requires effort. Don't skip class because the PPT's don't cover every

Motani is a great professor and I loved his Dinosaur class. There were 2 midterms and a Final, all were multiple choice and he curves. He doesn't have any writing on his lecture slides so you have to be in class to get all the information. He has a bit of a thick accent, but its still easy to understand. I loved Motani and his passion for Dinosaurs. A pretty interesting class and your grade will be made up of 3 non-cumulative exams. It is easy to underestimate the tests because they aren't many questions, but he curves each exam quite heavily which paves a path for your success. He will tell you exactly what's on the exams, just go to class.

Attending office hours was super helpful, especially after exams. You could review the test and ask any question you might have. He posted the lecture slides, but they didn't mean much if you don't attend lecture. Tests are hard, and the midterms are each worth 30% with the final worth 40%.

You can tell hes really interested in the subject! Great lectures, very willing to answer student questions, drops topics if he falls behind but doesnt test you on what he doesnt cover. Grading based on 2 midterms and the non-cumulative final, all multiple choice questions. Though you dont have to go to lecture it is helpful!

Very easy and fun class. Nice professor. He does have an accent that can be difficult to understand at times, but don't let this scare you away. Only a few tests throughout the quarter that are all multiple choice.

Motani was an excellent professor. He really has a passion for dinosaurs. You have to come to lecture because he posts incomplete slides online that are confusing without it. As long as you pay attention you should do well. Don't underestimate the tests, because each midterm counts for 30% of your grade, and the final counts for 40%.

Dr. Motani is an amazing professor. He includes a lot of stories from his fieldwork in the lectures and they make his class a lot of fun. You HAVE to go to lecture if you want an A. Some test questions are based only on things he briefly mentioned during lecture and his uploaded lecture slides are mainly pictures so you don't get info from them.

I took this class thinking it would be an easy A. Even to pass, you have to work very hard and memorize basically everything, and there is a lot to memorize about dinosaurs. But, the professor is very passionate and kind and if you work for it, you can easily get a B. You can't skip class either because his online posted slides only have pictures.

2 Midterms and a final, all multiple choice and based on the lectures. Each lecture he has lecture questions that if you study the answer to those, youll pass the test. He posts the slides on canvas but its important you show up to class because the slides have no information, only pictures. His class is entertaining though!

There's no homework and the grade only depends on the tests. All you do is show up, pay attention to the lecture and take notes until the tests. I advise sitting close to him to hear better. I learned too late that the best way is to record his lectures and listen to them later while going over his slides. Beware, his slides are only pictures.

After taking 2 classes with him, he is my favorite professor at UC Davis. The lectures are very engaging, and he actually tells some funny stories sometimes. He gives you everything you need to succeed on the exams, and is very helpful if you have questions. The exams consist of a phylogeny, multiple choice, and short answer. 10/10 would take again

You're graded only on tests (unless you take the lab). Lab is hard but very doable and you can still get an A. His lectures are AMAZING. His slides are mainly only pictures but he lectures in a way it's like a story (so you can't skip lecture). He's super interesting. Took him for both 107, 107L, and 141.

Dr. Motani was so helpful and accommodating for this class. I genuinely enjoyed every lecture and he splits the lecture up into questions that pertain to the twice weekly quizzes. Fun class and great GE overall!

I took this class online during Covid, and I have to say that Prof. Motani is an angel. So caring and thoughtful! He breaks up his lectures into approximately 6 videos, each addressing a question. If you can answer each question at the end of the video you are good to go for quizzes and exams. I highly recommend taking him.

Prof. Motani is really nice and the class is very straightforward. Recorded lectures, weekly quizzes and exams. If you watch the lectures, you should be set. The only thing that sucked was if you missed 2-3 questions on a quiz or test, you would be at a B/C range. I was one point away from getting an A, so it was frustrating. Overall, pretty easy.

Very sweet professor! Made accommodations. Lectures were short & straightforward. Grade is made up of quizzes (5 q's) and 3 tests (15 q's each). Everything is asynchronous but you do have to show up at a specific time to take them, if you miss them your grade suffers (sometimes the quizzes were so easy they became hard) but overall 10/10 recommend

He recorded lecture and we had like two quizzes a week. Everything was very straightforward. All I did was watch the lecture videos and took the quizzes. They were open note so as long as you write good notes you should pass the class easily.

Ive taken two classes with this this professor. Hes so cool! I have a new-found obsession with paleobiology thanks to him. The amount of material is overwhelming but interesting enough to make up for it. Grades are based on fairly easy and short mc quizzes and more challenging non-cumulative exams w/ short answer, phylogenies, and mc.

Very clear of class expectations. Just a short quiz after each lecture (open note). There were two midterms and one final. You could tell he is definitely very passionate but what he does and he even adds stories from his own experiences. He and the TA were very accommodating when I had a situation that came up.

One of the best professors at Davis. Workload is very manageable and his lectures are very interesting. If you watch the lectures and follow his study guides for the midterms and final, you can easily get an A. Since he records all of his lectures, you also do not have to attend the class in person if you so choose.

Professor Motani is a great lecturer. The class is graded by quizzes, 3 exams, and a project. The quizzes are based on everything in lecture and the exam hints are almost verbatim what he asks on the exam and if you go to officer hours he will give the answers for them. Recommend the 3rd option for the project as it gives extra credit.

I took GEL12 w/o many expectations but it became one of my favorites. You don't need any experience w/dinosaurs or geology to understand it and the lectures are very comprehensive. Tests are MC and open note so taking good notes from the lectures will really help. Everything is pretty straightforward w/ no trick questions. Highly recommend!

Cute professor. Super sweet and knowledgable of dinosaurs. It helps to have a sense of phylogeny, but this can be picked up with time. Otherwise, lectures are super clear. Only homework is a 2-point quiz after every lecture. Take them seriously because they each make up 2% of grade (and will add up). All exams open note.

This class is lowkey hard for 2 units even though everything is open note. Lectures aren't mandatory to attend but you need to go to pass the quizzes/ midterms. Motani is very nice and acommodating though and gave us EC. Just dont take this expecting it to be a breeze.

AMAZING PROFESSOR! Tells you exactly what is important at the beginning of each lecture. Teaches the content in an entertaining way, providing engaging commentary and his personal experiences in the field of study. Quizzes and tests are multiple-choice and open-note, so just show up, pay attention, and take good notes for a good grade.

Professor Motani is a great lecturer! Lecture slides don't include words/notes so it is important to show up to class if you want to get good quiz grades. There are two quizzes per week, 4 questions and very easy if you came to lecture. Midterms and finals are 20-30 multiple choice questions, many of which are from weekly quizzes. All open note.

The content is so fun but extremely lecture-heavy. Lectures are recorded and slides are posted, but some are mostly pictures without words. You can gather context most of the time, but going to lectures is best. Quizzes are open notes, and our exams were open notes too. The hardest thing is having organized notes. I heavily recommend online notes.

This class was super fun, but I wouldn't take it unless you truly have an interest in the climate side of mass extinctions. Getting an A in this class is super attainable, and while participation isn't required, sometimes things are said in lecture that are not reflected on the slides.

Took this class for as my ge. The tests were pretty easy if you make good notes from the lecture presentation. Tests were open note and open slide and professor curved a lot. Also, the extra credit assignment was great and lift my grade up a lot!

Motani's lectures are always interesting, I recommend going to lecture/watching the vids b/c a majority of his lectures are focused on what he says in class. The quizzes are relatively easy if you use the notes from class, usually on 4Q's. Try your best since they're a good part of your grade. Overall one of my best GE classes, would take again.

Professor Motani is a very kind professor. His lectures are very clear, and probably the most important part to doing well in GEL-012. The course consists of 2 open note quizzes weekly, 2 open note midterms & a final, all pretty easy if you go to lecture. Little studying needing outside of lecture. Show up, pay attention, and you'll do just fine.

Dr. Motani is a great lecturer who is very obviously invested in his work and in the learning experience of his students. Grades in this class were composed of two easy weekly online quizzes and two open-note midterms. This clas was a super fun experience and I would recommend it and Dr. Motani to everyone.

Definitely reccomend this class as an easy GE or GPA booster! You're allowed to bring your notes and lecture slideshows to M1, M2, and the final, and prior to each exam he releases a list of what each individual question will be about. Lecture's can be a bit flat, but topic is interesting!

Professor Motani's GEL012 class is a fun and engaging experience. The lectures are informative, and attending them is key to doing well on the easy open-note quizzes and exams. I found unstuck study's study aids to be super helpful for preparing. Overall, a great GE course!

Your grade depends on 2 weekly 4 question quizzes, 2 midterms and final. Lectures are recorded and quite interesting, very knowledgeable in subject. The class is easy, all exams are open notes and multiple choice and you know your score right after you submit it. Professor is very nice and considerate I definitely recommend to take this class!

Lectures matter, if you can't attend they are recorded, graded on 2 midterms, 1 final, and 4 question quizzes per lecture, open notes and open lecture slides for all the test. This quarter some students asked for extra credit, so although it was worth a lot, it makes a difference on your grade.

Professor Motani is the absolute best!! He is SUPER knowledgeable about his subject and has a lot of really cool anecdotes to share about working in the field if you ask. Dr. Motani is very passionate about paleontology. He is very receptive to questions and is very knowledgeable about everything dinosaurs. His lectures are very well organized, so they are easy to take notes on. He also allows open notes and open lecture slides on midterms and the final, meaning it is easy to get an A.

Amazing professor. Likes to throw jokes in every now and again. His midterms and final are open note/open lecture slides. Grade is only the lecture quiz (one per lecture) and midterms/final, honestly all easy. Small extra credit at the end. Going to lecture is better than reading the slides, since he mentions more info, but he also records!

Gel 005 is an easy class, especially if you've taken lower division biology or other geology courses. The only homework is a quiz after every lecture (due a day and a half later), tests are open-note. Professor Motani has well-organized slides and is good at answering questions.
