HORRIBLE! Just stood in front of the class for over an hour reading everything she posted on Blackboard. Also VERY rude and mean, would make you feel stupid for anything you did.
not very good, do not ask a question and expect an answer. she makes not sence. the best nap time i have had in a long time.
You won't learn anything from her lecture, might as well start reading the book now and figuring it out for yourself. She's very intelligent, but poor with her english. She pronouces Genetics and Character REALLY WEIRD, she says (corrector), sometimes you don't know what she means. She definitely could be more clear and helpful and speak better.
Plant Phys is a hard class to begin with, Suni tries to help everyone out, but you have to have some knowledge of plants before going into the class. You actually have to study for tests, because they are half short answer and the mc is hard. She does grade fairly though!
Reasonably clear lecturer, sometimes gets drawn off on a tangent about how important it is to study, or why she's not telling us something. Good handouts, though you still need the textbook to fill in the gaps, and some slides are missing. Course doesn't go into much detail, ignores much material in the textbook. Tons of extra credit available.
You have to pay attention in class and read the book, but if you do that, it should be an easy A. I think people are just lazy and don't want to do the work. I really liked her. Would definitely recommend.
She does have an accent which is hard to understand, but she was always willing to help. Study the notes and you'll do fine. Without trying I made a B in the class and thats studying the night before. If you really try you can get an A. She was the easiest Biology professor I had.
You only need to do one thing in this class; memorize the book. If you really want to learn biology choose another professor.
Dr. Dharmasiri is a really nice person and very helpful. She wants everybody to learn but I think she should help herself first and learn how to teach. Her tests are really hard and she compensates by giving extra credit. If you are planning on taking her, might as well buy the book now and start memorizing it. If you enjoy biology, dont take her.
Terrible class. She just reads the stuff from her power point slides and expect you to memorize a lot of information. This is probably the most boring and difficult class I took.
This was a very time consuming class, you HAVE TO READ to keep up, studying the night before is pointless. She was thorough and very knowledgable. THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE AN EASY CLASS!!! I would recommend her, she has tons of experience, and likes what she does.
She's a great prof.Goes into great detail, and yes,she does expect you to read the book an put some time into learning the material. The course is challenging, but not impossible. I'm assuming a majority of the previous posts are from lower classmen, but I am a post-grad and the amount of work expected is nothing unreasonable. Welcome to COLLEGE...
I am a junior with a 3.75 GPA and have always enjoyed biology until now. She is so hard to understand and really expects you to know everything she does. If you ask her a question she doesn't know the anwser to, she makes you feel like an idiot. I would not recommend anyone take this class from her if you actually want to enjoy yoru classes.
This class maybe hard, but I am sure all the people complaining here never used the resources offered by the school like the weekly S.I. sessions. They were unbelievably helpful. To prepare for her test you can't memorize the material you need to comprehend and apply it. When I went to SI i was able to do this and not stress about taking her test.
This class was pretty easy, she gives study guides over all tests and many extra credit opportunities. The hardest thing you will have to do is right a couple of scientific papers in lab. She can be difficult to understand sometimes but always has powerpoints on TRACS. I learned a lot of information, and would recommend taking her class.
*The prof. is nice and teaches well. *Class built to drop a bunch of freshman/pre-med students. *Memorization is key + you must tie all the pieces together *The labs are god-awful (long, boring, and very little insight gained). *Overall I would say you will dump more time than necessary into this class and receive marginal returns. * I got a B
Dr Dharmasiri is an excellent professor. Her weekly quizes prepare you for her tests and don't allow you to slack off. Course requires a lot of study time.
She is a horrible Professor. Tests are over at least 8 chapters at a time over complex concepts.Final is comprehensive so if you have her, she's definately going to take up all of your time. Lecture is pointless because she is horrible at speaking english. Don't try and get help from her one on one either, she'll just make you feel dumb.
Great teacher, sit in front! Takes effort, lab is boring and harder if you get the wrong TA (luck of the draw) Weekly online quizes and practice quizes, do them it helps. Tests are comprehensive, she lets you drop lowest scored midterm, gives extra credit even for final. 1430 weeds out those who shouldn't be Biology majors regardless of teacher
shes cool just study and take advantage of the extra credit there are alot of them.
She can be really hard to understand sometimes. Her lectures are mostly for her benefit, i wouldnt expect an answer to some of your questions. Your best bet is to read the book.
The class is tough and attendance helps because of the quizzes. She can be a bit difficult to understand so i would read the book.
Great professor. She really does care about the students and isn't one of those professors that teach for the exam. She keeps it interesting and tries to help you pull through with the grade you want. I highly suggest Dr. Dharmasiri for your general knowledge of biology. (I just took her last fall 09)
She is really nice and her test are not hard at all. If you pay attention in class and study her notes, you should make an A. There are many extra credit opportunities. Take IT. Shes cool.
I BARELY made a B in this class. Her tests were so confusing I felt like crying. It also took me at least a month to even understand her because her accent was so difficult to decipher. I would not recommend taking this professor. If you have to take her anyways, MAKE SURE you do the extra credit
Read the textbook and teach yourself. Don't rely on the lectures as they are confusing and jump around. Her voice is very grating so that also detracts from the lecture. Tests are confusing, questions are very specific to tiny aspects of subject rather than overall concept. Plus side is all tests/quiz are multiple choice. Attendance is taken always
Dr. Dharmasiri is a great professor. She is a very intelligent lady and her class is interesting. Don't listen to the other ratings because those people probably didn't do much in class. The key to this class is LISTENING and TAKING NOTES during lectures. If you do this, you won't have to crack open your book once. Sit at the front though.
Good teacher. she puts up outlines for the book, help you know what she'll test over. she basically prints all the nots you need in power points ans prints them for you! she can be alittle hard to understand but if you need to take bio for major this is who you need to take
Dr. Suni was the coolest professor I've had so far. I have so much respect for her, don't listen to the other comments- the class is challenging (you MUST study), but she explains everything perfectly and is always willing to help. the key is to sit in the FRONT of the class, her accent is NOT that bad. Dr. Suni is DA BOMB!!!!
Dr. Suni is a great professor! The class's materials is difficult and you will need to study this is not a blow off class! She provides notes prior to class which help a lot and she is always willing to meet with you during her office hours to review your exam results. Plus she gives opportunities for extra credit. Just go to class pay attention.:)
She is a great professor. For those of you who are visual learners, DO NOT WORRY! She brings props to class and has interesting videos to watch during her lecture time. She is always willing to help as well. Great Teacher. Take Dhamisiri and learn so much more than Prof. GREEN!
Accent makes it very difficult to understand anything she says. Lecture is pretty boring and she doesnt seem to be very detail oriented. I hated her tests. She asks questions in a very confusing manner and focuses on small details rather than overal concept. the only thing that got me through class was going to the SI sessions.
Dr. Suni is an amazing teacher. Yes, you MUST go to class, but her tests are really not that difficult. Notecards got me an easy A in the class. I definitely recommend taking her!!
She is a very good professor. It's hard to understand her so sit in the front. You also should take very good notes and attend the SI sessions. Her tests are really hard but you can pass if you study right. I recommend buying the book and reading the chapters that correspond to the power points. She really is an amazing teacher.
Class is pretty easy. Go to every lecture and study the powerpoint notes and you'll be fine. Accent is hard to understand at first but you get used to it after a while.
If you go to lecture and pay attention, you can get away with not reading the book, making the class not very time consuming. Be sure to use mastering biology for more than just the quizzes, which are due on Sundays(kind of a pain) but the class is pretty easy to get a good grade in.
Biology is hard period. For this class one must be willing to put in some effort, studying, reading, quizzes. Know EVERYTHING she covers in lecture by reading the chapters from the book and an A is possible. Dr. Suni is over all a good teacher she knows what she is talking about.
Go to lecture. Pay attention. Read the book. Go to SI sessions. And I promise you will make an A. You just need to understand the material and know how to link it other things you learn plus the readings are NOT that hard. She's a great teacher. She knows the material well!! Take her class! And take it seriously!
I never went to class because other students were to loud...she cares about her students very much..go to class and read the assigned chapters...if you read the class is not very difficult..but I would go to class if i took it over again...the only reason i recieved a b was because of her helping me....otherwise I would have recieved a c....
i like her she was extremely nice
Dr. Suni has an excellent, dry sense of humor and makes her lectures very interesting. Given that her work is primarily in genetics, that's how she approaches this class. Tests are multiple choice and you can either attend classes or read the book for an easy B, or do both for an easy A. Dr. Suni is an excellent professor!
Dharmasiri can be very frustrating but in the end if you put in the work you can get a good grade. I feel like a lot of these reviews maker her sound a little too easy, but it's not the hardest class you'll take. Test 1 and 3 are fairly easy if you study the notes and read the chapters. Read read read and you will make an A. Test 2 kicked my butt.
Suni is a wonderful teacher; however, she does expect the best out of everyone of her students. I attended about 3/4 of her lectures, but studied for hours on the tests. The book helps so much and so does her power points. When she says test 2 and the final will be hard.. she means it! I ended up making an A in the class..I recommend her!!
Ms. Dharmasiri was absolutely amazing at teaching Biology, and she can make any hard topic in Biology the simplest thing to remember. I wish she taught every Biology class, because I want to have her as my professor for my next 7 classes in Biology. Just a heads up, find time for the SI sessions because those are just as helpful in studying.
She is a very fair professor, and will give you a fair assessment of your work, however I had a very hard time understanding her accent. She seems to be a very knowledgeable lecturer and passionate about her field. I finished her class with an A, but would not take future classes again, due to the difficulty in understanding her accent.
This class is hard, but that is to be expected. Her tests are fair and she gives plenty of chances to improve your grades if you aren't good at taking tests. I never attended class bcs her accent was annoying, but by reading the book and doing the mastering biology assignments I was able to earn an A.
Awesome lady, very sweet, good sense of humor and definitely a fair prof. Take notes/listen in class, do the MB homework, show up for tests and you're good. A lot of typical, whiney babies, who don't deserve to be in college, like to complain about her accent, but that's only relevant if you're one of those narrow-minded, over-privileged students.
This is a class for majors. If you complain and can't get through with an average amount of effort, change your major. If you go to class and pay attention your fine. Dr. Suni is a very genuine person. Her tests are extremely fair. She has an accent but she speaks English, promise. I got a high A in the class. One of my favorite professors at TxSt.
I absolutely hated this class. First of all she is very mono tone; so that made going to class a headache. I went in to her office hours to discuss a test and she yelled at me for not understanding the material: exclaiming "How could you not get this?!" I would not recommend her to anyone. Not a good teacher.
Dr Suni is a wonderful instructor. If you have difficulties in her class she is more than willing to sit down and help you more fully understand the material. Her tests are fair, if you attend class and read the text book you should make at least a B in her class. she give multiple opportunities for extra credit to improve your overall class grade.
She is a good professor, you could tell she was passionate about her field, but the tests and lectures were nothing alike. The tests are much harder, even if you study and read the book.
If you're going into this course with little bio knowledge, it's hard. Spent hours making notecards, memorized her notes plus extra I wrote down. NOT enough! MUST READ BOOK! Course is not easy for the average student. I passed & scored ABOVE average on every test, still got a C. not cool.
Dr. Suni does really care about how people do. Majority of her test is off of her powerpoints with a few question from the book. READ your book, it helped me so much. Also, use your MasteringBiology. There are activities on there that helped me so much, especially the animation. Last of all, be sure to do well on your quizzes.
Okay this class is not for someone who is not willing to put in the hours and dedication. I never used my book but because of that I had to really memorize her powerpoints which yes is a lot. Just understand what she is talking about and try hard and you'll be fine!
This class is definitely not easy, but people are way too hard on Dr. Suni's teaching. She is not hard to understand and because English is not her first language she does not use fancy words, she states things plainly which makes it easy to understand. For the tests study the power points closely, but mainly GO TO CLASS and take good notes
worst teacher i have probably ever had. her accent; you cannot understand anything she says? normal everyday words sound foreign. if you have her, you better read the book or you're screwed. she has a 33% passing rate. yeah she's "passionate" about her job and a sweet lady, but that doesn't make her a good teacher.
Dr. Suni is a horrible professor, in the middle of the semester I had a critical family emergency which lead to death and when I returned to school I went to go see Dr. Suni and she was very condescending about the fact that I missed she told me that was not a valid reason and she gave me three hours to learn the materiel then i had to test over it
I really liked Dr. Suni. She wants her students to do well and is always willing to help. The tests are exactly like the powerpoints. She not only gives good notes, she gives online quizzes that help (and count as extra credit + a test grade), and puts chapter summaries on tracs. If you read and learn these summaries, there's no way you won't pass.
Lets start off with this is a Bio course, not some art or philosophy class, thus you should be taking it seriously. Dr. Suni is great, go to SI, go see her, come to class stay off your phone, believe me she will do everything to help you if you show her who you are.
Horrible teacher! You cant understand wat she is saying. She stands in front of class & tells us she isnt here to teach us, we are supposed to teach ourselves. Most of her class averages on tests are below 60 But since 1 person gets 100 she doesnt curve & she also likes to tell us that stuff is simple & we should kno the info when we ask a question
Her accent is so thick and high that it took the class at least a month to even understand her. I still have hard time understanding her, and she doesn't curve the tests but 2 points even if the average is 60. Her online quizzes are easy, and has some pre-lecture quizzes for extra credit. I'm a Bio major and this class sucked. Would not recommend.
Her accent is not hard to understand.
Her tests are really hard and she is hard to understand. It's impossible to pay attention in her class.
Dr. Suni is a great professor! She wants you to get a good grade so she is always willing to help you if needed. The tests are not hard if you study AND UNDERSTAND her lecture slides. Attending class is not mandatory, but it will help you get a better grade. She does have an accent but it is not that bad.
She is such a great professor she knows what she is talking about. I haven't taken a bio class since freshman , so she really caught me up you don't need to have taken previous bio for this class. She has a lot of resources to help you out and she is flexible for her quizzes and test.
Avg test scores were Cs. 16 of your grade is online quizzes w extra credit. Easy 100. 13 of your grade is a final. Not many small details, just broad concepts. Made an A by re-reading chapter summaries the day of the final. Reread the ch summaries she posts on tracs until you truly understand them and you got an A. Attendance not necessary.
Biology in general can be difficult, but she doesn't go into too much detail. She is spontaneously funny. Has an accent but not difficult to understand. She makes it clear since the beginning that she is there to help the students. There are online quizzes almost every week and are challenging but not impossible, same said for the tests.
This class is not easy, but it is not impossible either. The homework is fairly easy and the test didn't go into a lot of detail but you still need to know your stuff and study. The only thing I truly disliked about her was that she was rude to me when I spoke to her.
The tests are fairly easy if you go to class and listen to what she's saying. Class seems to go by really slow and she spends a huge amount of time scolding people for being "disruptive". Usually they're quietly on their phones or something. She can be really rude and she treats you like a bunch of elementary schoolers.
Great teacher but sometimes a little hard to understand. Lots of mastering biology homework and tests can be a little rough
She's actually a really good teacher, and cares about her students grades. I took Simpson for functional biology last year and took Dharmasiri this semester and enjoyed her class way more. The key to doing well in this class is to understand the concepts rather than just trying to memorize and cram. She offers extra credit too throughout the semest
This class is not easy. You have to put in the time and work for this class. It is a really interesting class but challenging class. As long as you try, you will pass. She gives pop quizzes for extra credit so make sure that you don't skip. She's a good teacher I would take her again.
From a student who made 100+ on all exams: it is possible to earn an A if u WORK for it. Read beforeafter class, take THOROUGH notes (essential!), understand concepts, study w classmates, go to SI & office hrs. Don't underestimate this course. Dr. D is a fantastic prof who can REALLY help u if u take the initiative and put in time & effort.
Was a great teacher- would take her if I could next semester. One of the best bio teachers at Texas State, you just have to learn how to study for the test. She drops lowest test grade out of four test grades and replaces it with the midterm. Going to her office hours is very helpful.
This class is tough, but she is the easiest professor for functional bio. If you study a lot and use her SI it is an easy A. If not it will be tough. Study for her test at least a week in advance and this class will be fine.
For Dhamasiri's class there were online quizzes once every week, i think by no means is the class hard as long as u take time to look at notes, because of her accent she may be a little hard to understand. Exams were some were in the middle as far as difficulty, she really cares for students & tries to gives everyone a chance & sends out reminders
This class is not easy, it is very challenging and if you want a good grade you will have to work for it and actually show up to class. She has a very thick accent so sit in the front of class. She gives daily pop quizzes in class. GO TO SI SESSIONS THEY HELP. Review your notes DAILY. And start studying for exams 4-5 days before the test.
Definitely the best professor for biology. Her accent isn't as bad as some say it is, just sit closer to the front. I recommend going to her office hours, join a study group (btw leaders get 5 ec points), and go to SI sessions. Her tests are very concept based. This class is doable, but you have to work hard for results so prepare yourself.
Loved Dr. Dharmasiri's botany class. Extremely clear and straightforward teacher and would definitely take her classes again.
Enjoyed her course.
This class is very difficult but it is for science majors, with that being said she is an amazing professor and is EXTREMELY helpful when you put in the effort and use her office hours. She sat with me on multiple occasions and reviewed material I didn't understand. Yes her accent is thick, but focus and pay attention and you will be perfectly fine
Really great at teaching! she goes at a good pace and really explains everything and always stops to make sure everyone is catching on. i would sit at the very front just bc she isn't that loud and has a thick accent that can sometimes be hard to understand. other than that go to office hours and ask questions about what you don't get!
Didn't really think I'd learn past her accent, but it's really not as bad once you get used to her. She's really funny, but she focuses more on her lectures. Could be fast paced and the material isn't super interesting, which is why outside studying is required.
This class isn't nearly as bad as some people make it seem. Dharmasiri is a nice professor and if you just go to class, study, and do the homework you should do okay in the class. To get an A you will probably have to work pretty hard but it's not that bad. Her accent is strong so listen closely and follow along the powerpoints.
She's a great professor!! Her lectures are very precise and there. If you skip, you wont pass. Go to office hours. The more she knows you, the better. She curved me up to an A because of it.
This class was pretty hard for a non-science major course. My friends with other professors for 1320 had easy A's, while Dharmasiri teaches extra, more difficult material. I managed to make a B with the extra credit & Connect quizzes. Go to class because the notes are fill-in-the-blank and that's where you do the TopHat quizzes. Drops lowest exam.
Super easy!! She gives you the notes and material before lecture. She also gives you reviews before the exams that are almost identical to the exams. I had no past knowledge of bio before this class and managed to get an A. I recommend.
Legit the hardest class I have ever taken. Her accent is super thick and cannot be understood really. She literally just pays attention to the people who are "disrupting " class. She will call you out, not very friendly. Grades are established by a point system so she drops your lowest grade doesn't help bc every point counts. 10/10 not recommend
Dharmasiri is an excellent professor! Definitely recommend. She is very passionate about teaching, EXTREMELY willing to help. Literally, one of the nicest professors i've had in college. Very rare to find a teacher like her. Let's not get confused with pushover and easy... Her class is hard and she definitely expects you to put in work.
This class is pretty hard but if you are willing to work you'll be fine. She has an accent but if you sit in the front you will be fine. She is very fast at replying to emails and appreciates it when you go to her office hours.
Dharmasiri is a good biology teacher and you should definitely take her. You won't find her lectures to be boring, and she is very good at explaining things. I found her teaching style to be very clear and easy to follow. There is a lot of studying required, but hey, it's a science class what do you expect. She gives a great intro to bio!
Dr. Suni goes above & beyond for her students. She is very good at what she does but will not just hand out an A, you must work for it. If you are taking this course it is because it is necessary for your degree meaning this course is the foundation of the rest of your college career & knowing the material is crucial for you. This class was great.
Biology has been one of my struggles throughout school and now I feel much better about getting a A in this class. The first and second exam I bombed them and I did not know exactly what my issue was, I went to Dr. Suni office hours and she really cared! She helped me figure out what my problem was and now I am doing much better and will continue
Dr. Suni was an average professor. My class was a very moronic class and I felt like the size (around 280 or so) stressed her out a lot. Every once in a while we'd get extra credit (usually attendance based) and she seemed good at what she did. I went to her office hours a couple times and she was semi-helpful.
Listen, Biology is Biology. I finished her class with a 95, and I'm not freakishly smart I just work hard, and by work hard I mean I read before class and reviewed my reading, and did all the homework. That's all you have to do. If you come to every class, and go to office hours, she'll help you out. Also you get to drop your lowest exam!
Super sweet & genuinely cares about her students. Easy to contact with questions outside of class. Provides us with notes and even sets up review sessions for exams outside of class. There are pre-lecture quizzes for every class, but they're super easy. A lot of extra credit opportunities. Super funny, but gets stressed if the class is loud.
Be prepared for the hardest course you will ever take. Prof Dharmasiri is not lenient and expects you to know more than that is taught.
If you show up to class, study the material well and complete all the assignments you will be okay. Just a very time consuming class that is not easy.
This professor was the worst professor ever. She is extremely difficult and has no compassion for anyone other than herself. The exams look NOTHING like her slides. Her slides don't make any sense. I passed because I watched many youtube videos. She doesn't speak english well, so you need to sit in the front to get some idea of what she is saying.
Prepare to do a lot of studying (Iike HOURS). Professor Dharmasiri is a good teacher and will help you if you ask, but the class is very test-heavy and the tests are difficult to prepare for and her reviews don't help. FYI she will only round up less than one point for final grade I had a 67 and she did not let me do anything to bring my grade up.
