Not terribly hard, but not easy either. Take advantage of ALL the extra credit and coupled with okay grades it's easy to come out with a B. Take part in discussions and ask questions, likes when students show interest.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! She is the worst professor you can get. She is very boring, and very rude. She really knows her stuff but if you don't know it she makes you feel stupid. She isn't very helpful either, she'll always say "I don't know check the syllabus". Try to avoid her if you can.
pretty easy class, test are off the review you just have to remember to check canvas that is where she post EVERYTHING! assignments are only 100 words not difficult at all, just remember to do it. I didn't have to buy a book, never used it.
Very confusing grading system, she has you do in-class and online work which essentially gives you two grades, so you're not sure what your current grade is. She tries to help as much as she can, but the work load was just too overbearing. Would not recommend at all. Save yourself the trouble, please.
She is a nice lady, but beware of her tests. The study guides for the tests are completely unrelated and do not help on the test at all. Most of the material from the tests is from classroom discussions, which are hard to take. She's nice but I would not recommend taking her class.
Took her TX Govt summer 1. So easy. She loves to discuss current events. Gives extra credit. I never did it and still scored an A. Would take her again.
Mrs. Hammel is always right no matter what ;) She is a nice lady and really knows her stuff but can be hard to follow in class and take notes cause there is so much information being spoken. Gives take home test that are not the easiest in the world. In class test can be tough as well.
Took online during summer super easy class. Recommended!
Took Federal Gov with Ms. Hammel online during the summer. She's quick to reply to questions, and the work isn't very difficult- just a bit time consuming. I don't know how many exams there are during a regular class, but we had 2 for the summer session. All multiple choice.
Very confusing
Took her for Texas gov. Would not recommend this professor. She is very smart but talks over your head on purpose. She wants everything to be a group discussion and expects you to participate in ever conversation even if it she has taught nothing on the subject. Assignment instructions are hard to understand and she provides little help.
Not many assignments. All tests are take home except for the final. LOTS of group work. Here assignments always are like in a foreign language to me cause its difficult to understand question. Shes nice but wouldn't take again. Doesn't take any many notes. LOVES talking about current events. You have three absences, then starts taking points off-_-
Mrs. Hammel is a nice woman, but her assignments and grading system are very broad. She will say one thing and do another. She is very informative and loves government as well. I would not take her again if I needed her course as another credit.
Would NOT take her again. Esp. if you have little knowledge about govt. The way she words things in assignments makes it difficult to understand. Grade's tough and takes off points for little things. Gives pop quizzes!!! She says take notes in class but she's confusing so how can I?! Everyone works in groups so don't slack off.
I didn't learn anything in this class. Most of our discussions were on gun laws and we didn't read anything about guns other than the 2nd Amendment. She also seems to push her political agenda. Homework and discussions are not hard, but exams are a bit tricky. Our first exam she included chapters we hadn't read yet. I wouldn't recommend her.
As far as reading goes be ready to read A LOT. The chapters are extremely long , when you need help she answers quickly, but even if you speak respectfully to her don't expect to be treated the same. So if you easily feel degraded I don't recommend taking her course. If you love politics you might find some interest in this still.
Ms. Hammel is not a conventional teacher, her class is fun and very hands on. She gives tons of extra credit opportunities! You will have to read on your own and the chapters are long. Beware of who you choose to be in your group because it will have a huge impact on your grade and overall experience. She is always happy to help just ask!!
THE worst professor I have ever taken. Online class with her is miserable. Grades subjectively, and does not like when you have a different opinion, although different opinions will happen because of the topics we discuss.
Grading is not fair, does not follow a grading scale for essays. Your opinion is wrong unless it aligns with her opinion. This was the only summer class where I had an assignment every 2 days. Avoid her at all costs
In my opinion, I feel she is being rated unfairly. I took her TX Govt. face-face and my team & I agreed she was harshly rated. Group projects are awesome! Professor Hammel's work/life experience makes her well respected. I also took her Federal Govt summer course in 2016, and received an A. I recommend taking her for both, expectations are known.
I took Professor Hammel's Texas Government and Federal Government courses offered at NLVC and she is consistent with expectations of quizzes and tests. The group projects where very helpful with assignments.
Easy to talk to. You do have to do one project outside of the class on a Saturday and write a paper about it. You have a lot of discussions in class about current politics. She has done group tests besides the final you are on your own. The test you can use your book and the test is about a current event and you answer questions about it.
Lectures every class. Extra credit always available. No BS kind of professor. Not difficult to pass.
Her online class is the worst. She accepts no late work which is understandable but some people have lives and can't always turn things in on time. Most teachers take off points which I think is more reasonable. Extra credit is mandatory and if not completed points are taken off your current grade. Too much work for E.C. to be worth only 5 points.
Do not take this class if you hate writing essays. All essays even the exams. Didn't know I was taking a writing class could have swore this was Govt. Anyways avoid if u despise research and writing.
Class is a mix of lectures, group work, & popquizzes. Coursework is challenging (essays) but expectations are clear on the grading rubric. Keeps you posted on assignments, therefore there's not a lot of excuses to miss any. Effort is reciprocated fairly. Knowledgeable, passionate. Take time to get to know her- she's great.
Took her online Texas Government class and passed with an A+. Reading isn't necessary just use the textbook for some assignments. Quite a few essays but info is easy to find online and also discussions are pretty easy. Pretty lenient grader
She was my professor for an online summer class and highly recommend her. There is a lot of homework but its easy to do. Nothing was too difficult and its easy to make an A in this course!
Mrs. Hammel is probably one of the smartest people I know. If you show up and participate in class and do the work it is an easy A. She has a lot of assignments and papers but if you work hard then she will reward you with a good grade. I took her for Gov. 2305 and 2306, she is basically a walking search engine!! So smart and knowledgeable. A+
A ton of essays but generous grader. I felt confident with my papers with her. Offers tons of extra credit opportunities. I highly recommend taking Professor Hammel.
I think she is awesome! there are alot of papers to write, but she is an easy grader. Just do the work, and youll be fine. She also responds to emails ALL the time. respect her and she will respect you.
So a lot of work! Lots of essays. But it was easy. I actually learned a lot and gives SO MUCH extra credit. If you dont pass this class Then thats on you because theres plenty of opportunities to get there. Shes very responsive to emails. One group project. Quzzes and a few essay test. Not bad all
Hammel is funny and very understanding. She changes deadlines very often and her assignments are EZ to at least get a B on. Make sure you read though, since she doesn't really teach any content on her online quizzes and tests. Attend class or you will not know about tests/ essays. Essays are very short. Simple class, just actually try to do work.
Everything we did in this class we could have done without a teacher. I can honestly say there was 2-3 classes she actually taught us something (the rest is google & writing papers) If youre a student thats just trying to get the credit this is for you, but for students who are really interested in learning how the government works dont do it.
SO MANY PAPERS. Discussions every week have to be a min of 2-3 paragraphs. Also she has this assignment called a Service Learning Reflection paper, you have to complete a certain amount of community service like hours outside of class and then complete the paper. A HUGE INCONVENIENCE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU CHOSE ONLINE CLASSES FOR A REASON.
You will get an easy A if you just do the work! You will have discussions every week, and there is chapter quizes over the book but its very easy!! The test are simply easy essays and involves research! Do not expect power point notes or notes in general. She only discusses current events in class.
Kind of an easy A class, but at the same time during lectures all she does is discuss current events. When it comes to assignments you're really doing it all on your own. I had her as an hybrid class , first and last time ever doing that.
This class does have a lot of writing, but as long as you have an intro, body, and concluding paragraph, and citations, you'll certainly get 100's. You don't need the textbook, most of the work is just researching online. Make sure to do well in discussions, as the final will be going into that group. Overall, easy A, interesting class.
A lot of homework, you will have to read and study hard. It took about 6 1/2 hours of research to write a decent paper for my midterm and got 85% on it, she's tough but I learned a lot in a five-week summer course and so will you if you put in the hard work. A great professor overall one of the best If I had the choice to retake this class I would.
Great professor. You will learn about things you did not know anything about. Has a long introduction which made me think she will judge but she did not mind me going against her views. Overall easy summer class
She is nice when not discussing the course info. Very tough, confusing instructions and no clarification. Told us to read, but no info used, all extra research. No lecture, just talk about current events. Have to do the work all yourself online but mandatory attendance, so hour, 15 min wasted of my time. requires 8 hours community service and paper
Ive never written so many papers. Her instructions are confusing at times because she take time to actually read her own work before publishing. Her tests are essays but if you put in the time for the research then you will get a good grade. Didnt like the service reflection paper for an online course though. Giving up my time on the weekend.
This prof. requires 8 hours of volunteer work, so if you know you don't have time don't take this class. SO MANY ESSAYS. Honestly burnt out on them. Group projects, and mandatory attendance. Offers a lot of extra credit but it requires a written essay. Good luck.
Showing up to this class was a waste of time honestly, there were no lectures. All learning was done by reading your textbook at home. It was an easy enough class, but I wouldn't take her again. Don't take this class if you actually want to learn anything.
She does not grade too tough, but she is very paper heavy. Her assignments are super confusing to the point where you have to reread it multiple times just to understand what she wants from you. Also requires service hours for the online course which is ridiculous since people take online because they dont have time to go out as much.
A lot of group quizzes and presentations. She gives ample opportunities for extra credit and the lectures are an overview of Texas government you learn in high school. During the lecture, she will usually go off on a tangent and loves to talk with students off-topic. A great class to get other work from other classes done though!
Do not take if you can help it. I registered for a class with someone else and when I showed up, they had switched the instructor. A major downgrade. Okay as a person, but as a prof. she's confusing and kinda useless. Doesn't talk about what we're learning about in the book and doesn't admit when shes wrong or hard to understand + 8hrs service req.
Just do the work and youll be okay.
I took her Texas Government class for the Summer semester. If you are looking for an easy and quick way to get your government class done with I would recommend Professor Hammel. As long as you turn in all the assignments on time it is an easy A. You won't read the textbook much but I would still recommend buying it for the quizzes and assignments.
Prof. Hammel has such a massive ego. Her class was easy to handle, just make sure you do your work on time. She gives feedback on most of your work but don't expect to understand a single thing she says, her head is so far up her own ass she can't see when she types. Grades you like an English teacher, yet writes assignments like a five year-old.
Worst professor Ive ever taken. Shes a wannabe English teacher that deducts points on spelling and grammar, but doesnt do the same when it comes to her own work. Youll sit there for hours trying to see what she means by her poorly written assignments. Asking for clarification is useless cause shell just mock you or not respond at all.
Her online class was super easy overall, make sure to do all the assignments--especially the discussion posts. There are weekly discussion posts, some require research, but honestly you can bs them easily. She isn't a good professor though. She is horrible at answering questions, she has terrible grammar, and she grades papers solely off turnitin.
Well, first off, be prepared to do lots of writing and your own research and learning on the topic material. I bought the book and the way tests are structured, the questions are straight from Quizlet, so just use that to study and you'll be just fine. Required community service of 4 hours typically with only a day or two prior notice.
OK professor, but a good portion of class was spent talking about current events rather than the material for tests. She also has a requirement that you do community service along with an essay. Normally I wouldn't think this as a bad thing, but having a full load of classes and a full-time job made this extremely difficult to find the time to do.
She was horrible when I was sick! She gave me automatic zeros when I was absent for a day due to being sick and awaiting COVID results. She will forget to plan a class and just rant about nothing. She sends so many announcements and gets angry if you don't read every one of them. Assignments are not hard and quizzes are straight from Quizlet.
Please do yourself a favor and do not take this Professor she has a tendency to go on long boring lectures because she hasn't planned the class ahead of time and just makes every class a snooze fest. She also requires a MANDATORY 8 hours of community service with a 3 page essay which is hard to make time for.
I think she is great, the people on here who rated bad mad cause they thought it was going to be a breeze class. No you still have to try and turn assignments been pretty consistent since im not sure First grade.Everyone knows when test days are and finals, stop missing them duh stop waiting until day before an assignment is due to Ask questions.
I would not recommend taking this professor's class. She is SUPER passive-aggressive and just plain mean. I've heard it happen to other students too, but when I was sick she acted like it was my fault. When you email her with questions, she is VERY rude about answering the questions, blaming you for not asking during class time. She's just so mean.
Horrible. Do not take this class. It is a lot of research and writing responses. I never write reviews but this teacher is the worst. She does not know how to clearly write something out and you will always be confused. Most of the final exam questions are about things you didn't even go over in class. Report her to the dean.
go to class you will be fine. not everything will be handed to you in life you will have to work to get places in this world so, buckle up, and put for the effort you reap what you sow and with that.....go to class!!!
she is great
vounteer work and tones of extra credit
loved this teacher she is tough on grammer
great teacher
The professor is not clear when she gives instructions. I know it's not me because the class had a group chat and almost all my classmates are confuse too. However, even if she explain again, it's still confusing because she has poor grammar. She doesn't know how to use the word "six" and "sixth" in a sentence.
She is a tough grader, I don't think she understand that this is a government class meaning not everyone is going to be really knowledgeable 100% about it. She just makes me feel like I'm dumb, especially the way she talk to me whenever she reply to my questions. It's very unprofessional.
Go to class you will be fine
Awful professor. 1. asks for 8 hrs of service hrs and a group project for an online class. 2. essay heavy asking to be clear and concise in essay writing however cannot give clear instructions on any assignment w/ bad grammar errors. Don't take this class unless you want to leave this class more confused and less educated than before.
Prides herself on the socratic method which wasn't everyones cup of tea. Personally, I liked it because she often would give you the answer to the question she's asking and encouraged participation even if your answer wasn't completely correct. Easy quizzes for extra credit. Easily able to exempt final which is taken online. Some group work.
As long as you pay attention in class and participate this class is super easy. The textbook readings are lengthy, but the assignments are unlocked at the beginning of the semester so you have plenty of time to do them. There are many in class quizzes/projects but she is an easy grader. I would definitely take it again.
As long as you participate in her lectures and turn things in on time you will be fine. She is an easy grader.
Do the work. That's literally it. Tons of discussions, a few papers, one group project, and a few hours of community service. No thoughts on the final since I was exempted due to having an A+ and no late work. She's easy to get a hold of and constantly sends out reminders. Anyone complaining about her or the work is just lazy.
Talks more about current events and the quizzes are about the text book so you have to do your own studying. All the answers can be found on quizzlet. One big group project. Not too many assignments. Do your work and you'll be fine
makes you have 8 hours of volunteer work, very biased in in class discussions, speaks negatively about politicians and does not let you have your own idea. she continuously provides the ideology that she knows best and does not allow for others to have a difference of opinion. if you want to learn government don't take her class.
Did a pretty easy online class if you just put in even a bit of work.
Easy class. 6 extra credit opportunities (worth 1%) throughout the semester. No pop quizzes. Group presentation (the first presenters tend to get graded less harshly). Quizzes are not in person. Service learning was fun to complete. Got to exempt the final (had A, no late/missing assignments, good attendance, etc). No exams, just papers.
Mostly lectures, lots of papers, pretty funny.
Dr Hammel's class is an easy class for the most part, lots of quizzes over the textbook, volunteering outside of class for credit, and there's essays and no exams. She also does great discussions over current events that actually relate to the lecture in class, and she is helpful, and funny as well. I would definitely recommend her to my peers.
Took a Flex course with Professor Hammel a few times. Every time the grading is fair, assignments are open from the start of the semester to the due date of the assignment and has an easy explanation. Lots of class discussions and one group project towards the end.
well, this is a relatively easy course as long as you stay on top of assignments there is a ton of discussions and be ready to figure out everything on your own because asking this professor, a question will simply get you referred to the assignment or textbook
Dr.Hammel is incredibly frustrating to work with. She generally has a higher-than-thou attitude and talks down to everyone. She preaches the socratic method, a teaching style that is notoriously ineffective. there are large daily readings, and, while her assignments are generally easy, there are so many of them you'll still be working 24/7...
This is my second time taking this course online due to an emergency. My last professor was great, but she's is completely different. Her teaching style is very frustrating, shes always passive aggressive and her assignments don't actually teach you about roles of Texas government rather seems like she focus on federal government and other topics.
Her teaching style is very bad as others said, she grades you like an English teacher and doesn't seem to understand she's hurting the community more than good with her confusing assignments and tough deadlines. She was so tough on grammar and weird assignments at the end I didn't learn much about Texas at all. This is my favorite subject,
I can honestly say due to her teaching I didn't learn an thing about Texas government and still passed, she is always talking down on her students, someone who grades grammar in government and 90% of assignments don't have to deal with Texas government. She's too deep into political science. This isn't political science this is Texas government.
I passed this course and want to take it again because she really does not understand how to teach in a way students learn. I passed yet learned nothing at all. She focuses on political science and not actual roles of the Texas Government. She grades too tough and she's doing more damage than good in the education of our community. Do not take!
If you want to learn, maintain your GPA and not be talked down on I highly recommend you don't take this course. She has an old school style of teaching and you will be very frustrated and learn absolutely nothing. She's lazy as in she won't teach but just tell you to read text book. Overall she turned a fun subject into a frustrating one.
She needs to retire, she's been in the education system for 20 years and it shows (in a bad way). She's a far leftist who will talk down on your or poorly grade you if you don't agree. She seriously is a stain on our education system and people like her need to move on and find a new career. Seriously take another professor, this is a fun course.
Do the work and you will have no issues with Dr. Hammel. She provides clear criteria and then holds everyone to it. She provides a fair amount of extra credit if you need or desire the opportunity to pull your grade up. Do the reading and participate in class and you will do great.
