Hard class.. there's a lot of labs and the tests are really hard. Science overall is dreadful, but she's also annoying so it's even worse.
All I know is I checked out her website and her picture does not look human.
By far the best teacher @ Hofstra....will help you with anything you need and everything she teaches is so clear. If you need to take chem make sure you have her!
Great teacher, the best I know of at Hofstra for chem. Very clear and helpful and shes just nice.
She would assume you know and make you feel stupid at times, but she is probably the best of the chem teachers. She curves alot, i had below a 70 average in her class and i got a B.
Great professor. Clear and thorough explanations of material. Curves grades, extra credit, online quizzes. Exams are fair-as well as grading policy.
One word to describe her.........INCREDIBLE
AMAZING professor, gives answers for labs during office hours. Just be willing to do a little work each week for this class and she will be willing to give you an A.
Sobel rocks. Smart, fun, like when she brings the dog to class, and would take the tests for you if she was allowed. So helpful. HOT
the most amazing teacher in the chem department. she will sit down with u and explain anything and everything u need help on. if ur willing to work, ull do fine. tests/quizzes are exactly what she teaches in class. shes fair and nice...cant get better than that
Very helpful. Whenever you have a problem you just have to see her and she will explain it till you understand it. Anyone wanting an A can get one. The most helful theacher I've ever had. Very good at teaching in class and a cool dog too! I would recommend this class to anyone.
Dr. Sobel is aight. Her exams are easy if you know the review sheet and put all those types of problems in your graphing calc. She curves like crazy. I got a B+ with a 76 average and that was with a a 63 on the final. Dont worry the call averages are low also thats why she curves a lot. Go to OFFICE
amazing! One of the best professors i have encountered here at hofstra both undergrad and post bacc. She will go out of her way to help you in any way that she can! thank u!!!
Very helpful - she goes out of way so that you can understand instead of just follow the book. She is one the nicest and best professor I have had.
Dr. Sobel is the best professor I have ever had at Hofstra. She is amazing, she is so helpful and goes out of her way for her students. She's not easy, but very fair and always willing to explain something to you. She is also the most brilliant woman I have ever met and I look up to her so much! Plus, she has a cute dog who roams aroun the class!
Dr. Sobel was so helpful. She is extremely nice and a great teacher. The tests are quite hard but shes always willing to help you out. She was my first chem professor so i have nothing to compare her to but i am definitly glad that i got her.
I love this teacher! She is the only great chem professor I have had at this school. I highly recommend her to anyone!
She is very nice and very helpful....her tests are hard but they are all curved so its easy to get an A if you at least try....
This is a very difficult class! Only take this class if you are Pre-Med or have a fervor for chemistry. Sobel is willing to help you out, and helps the class out through curved exams. The lectures are not mandatory. Extra credit opportunities are available.
Curves a lot- so I ended up getting an A but what matters to me is how much subject knowledge and understanding I gained; not the letter grade. I'm sure no curve will be necessary if someone else was teaching. She is a smart person, but she seriously lack teaching skills. p.s. she has more than one side, so just beware.
Be sure to get on her good side. She's funny, smart, and always helpful. Lab work is a pain, and her quizzes are okay. If you suck at chemistry you can still pass although with measurable difficulty.
By far the best professor ever! Always willing to help students. Even if she is not your lab teacher, she will help you with your lab work. Gives a lot of extra credit options. If you attend class you will do extremely well. Also, there is an awesome curve so an 80 overall in the class equals and A. If you have an option def take Dr. Sobel!
Dr. Sobel is a very good teacher; she is a brilliant woman and demonstrates clear mastery of general chemistry. However, make sure you are a dedicated student if you are going to take her lab course because there is a lot of work involved. Also, don't get on her 'bad side'... she may not be all that nice if you don't know the charge of an ion...
good.
well she is extremely smart and is always available for extra help but she just can't teach. and if you get on her bad side, you might as well drop the class PS you can tell if you're on her bad side if her forehead vein pops out when she talks to you.
THIS PROFFESOR MIGHT AS WELL BE THE DEVIL. SHE SUCKS AT TEACHING. JUMPS FROM SUBJECT TO SUBJECT. BEWARE. SERIOUSLY, IF YOU WANT TO SIT IN CLASS AND NOT KNOW WHAT GOING ON.. EVER, THEN TAKE HER. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR THE TESTS, YOU TEACH YOURSELF. MIGHT AS WELLSLEEP DURING CLASS.
Dr. Sobel is a good teacher and a funny lady. It's a tough class, so make sure you do the homework and go to class. If you need help, she's more than happy to help. 3 tests and a final, gives you opportunities to earn up to 20 pts. extra credit. The book isn't necessary.
I hated her because she is not clear when she teaches and she jumps from one thing to the next. I learned more from the textbook and owl questions than from her. She gives extra credit which is nice because you will need it. Made chem 4 way more difficult than it should have been. And the final...forget about it!
I used to love Chemistry until I had to be forced to learn from Dr. Sobel. You can see that she's a sweet person the first day of classes, but she teaches as though she's teaching a graduate class instead of First Year Cluster! Hesitate to follow through with this cluster if you can, it's too difficult for the average student!
Sobel is a great teacher. All of these people giving her bad ratings are just mad because they didn't work hard and fairly got a bad grade. Sobel is brilliant and friendly, but she does ask a lot of her course, which is fair because it's an important subject and you should understand everything anyway. I wish she taught more classes, I'd take them.
Great Teacher. Just study and work as if you're in college and not high school and you will do fine. Have study groups. Those help a lot.
beyond fantastic grading system/teaching style, just all around a great class for a difficult subject. OWL homework is long and tedious, but really helps with the subject long term.
Dr. Sobel is kind and sweet. She DOES NOT know how to teach. She moves way to quickly in class as if every one understands chem as well as she does. They do not. I understand people taking her side on this website saying students are upset at the fact they got low grades, but Sobel doe not teach like OWL or the textbook and is very confusing.
She doesn't have the ability to teach intuitively. Meaning that she doesn't relate in a way that the student can understand but rather where you have to memorize the method to get the answer. Like me telling you that you should do this to get this and it works just fine, but you don't know why. You'll forget everything she's taught later on.
Good teacher in lecture, class isn't mandatory but you should still go. Pay attention and study and it's an easy A. good teacher overall
Nice lady, but she taught like she was teaching graduate students. It is not at all helpful when you're an incoming freshman and its your first semester of chemistry. She is fair with grading; grades on a curve. Don't need to attend lectures but must be present for group work days which was like 2x a week.
She's a nice lady but her explanations are often long and confusing. She also assigns a ton of online homework.
VERYYYYY CONFUSINGGG!!! :@SHOULD CURVE THIS CLASSS!!!!!!!!! I PRAY SHE CURVES THIS CLASS. GOD KNOWS
Dr. Sobel is amazing. She is always willing to help by either e-mail or in her office hours. The content of the class is a bit confusing at times, but if you take the time to ask for help when needed you'll do fine. She is fantastic!
Not the easiest class for students without a background in organic chemistry o other higher sciences but she is very understanding of that. There is a lot of sapling homework but its manageable and helpful. Its a manageable class even though the material can become quite confusing at times. However, an A is possible regardless of chem background.
I can understand why people are saying she moves too quickly during lectures... But if you put in effort, you will understand the material. She is MORE than willing to work with you and help you find the best solution for your personal needs, and she offers a ton of extra credit (including a problem for +10% on tests). Don't buy the OWL, not used.
Has 100% discouraged me in continuing to be a health science major. I am a very diligent student and it did not pay off. Her lectures are over complicated and she teaches as if it is a graduate course. Never taking another class with her.
Dr. Sobel is such a sweet lady! She's funny and does goofy things and always brings in food for the class. However, her lectures are terrible she unclear and moves WAY too fast. You won't understand anything she's talking about. Avoid if you can. Many people have to retake the class The only good thing about her class is that she curves everything.
Dr Sobel teaches way too fast, and her lectures are usually confusing. However, she is great one on one. Her practice exams are exactly like the tests, and the curve helps a lot. She seems intimidating, but she is one of the sweetest teachers I've met so far. If you have her, go see her during office hours as much as possible
If you want to learn chemistry, you need to do more than the lectures. The lectures were horrible, I'm sorry to say. One on one, she's phenomenal and takes her time. Her lectures are incredibly fast, though. Such a sweet lady and always there for her students, and I left with a decent grade, but I don't feel like I learned very much unfortunately.
She is a great lady and knows her stuff. i wasn't a big fan on how she taught but of the most part she teaches fine, just got to stay focus in her class. she gives TOO MUCH online homework that you have to pay $45 for. Tests are ok final was TOO LONG. she answers questions. just right and will make you understand the material if you just ask.
Knows her stuff but the class is very difficult and the exams are nothing like the practices exams so be sure to study very hard. She also expects everyone to have the knowledge and enthusiasm of a chem major.
Dr. Sobel is very intelligent and lectures very fast. After the first few lectures my brain hurt trying to comprehend everything she threw at us but once you get used to her, it's manageable. She gives practice exams that are very reflective of the actual exams and her review sessions are very helpful. If you study, you'll pass.
She's a nice person for most of the time. Exams look like the practice she gives before and goes over answers. Lots of extra credits on exam and outside. Lots of pointless sapling homework, but if you miss one, she'll extend the deadline. Book was never used and reads off power points which she postes, so just study those. Long final, but curved.
Dr. Sobel is a very sweet person. Her lectures are often a bit fast-paced, but she does practice problems thoroughly and step by step. She assigns a lot of online homework. Her tests are similar to the practice exams. I personally didn't find the curve to be very helpful, however. Otherwise she is a pretty good teacher.
This woman is a gem!
Whatever you do, AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. Never in my life have I encountered a teacher who gets angry when her students ask questions about a test. She flies through lectures as if students know the material, not explaining as she goes.
She is a horrible teacher. Nice lady but doesn't explain anything. Rushes through the material as if you already know it. Gets mad at students for asking questions and then doesn't answer their questions correctly. Condescending and horrible at teaching. Avoid her at all costs unless you want to spend all of your time at tutoring.
I'm only taking her for lab, but try to avoid her. If you ask her a question about lab reports or calculations she doesn't help and then leaves nasty comments on the paper when you get them wrong. She also spends 15-20 mins going over slides about the experiment meanwhile there's a lab manual for that. She makes a lot of snide remarks too.
Extra cred upto 20 pts if u go to seminars. Attendance mandatory for group work. She curves grades. Any other professor wouldve failed me. Practice exams similar to test. She goes too fast in lecture, so don't think you'll catch up to her. I said the same thing to myself at the beginning of the semester. Chegg has all the sapling hw answers. YW.
if you want to actually learn chemistry to be prepared for chem 4, dont take her. The only reason to take her class is if you want a nice curve on your final class grade. my grade was originally a D and she curved it to a B.
THIS WOMEN IS AMAZING! Yes, she moves way too fast during lecture but she can easily be reached through email and office hours. This professor is so friendly and so approachable. I would take all my chem classes with her if I could. Just study her practice tests and she curves grades. She also gives 20 pts in extra credit and sapling hw.
She is just amazing. Due to corona, class was switched to online format which made this class even easier lol because all her online exams were sapling. This class is an ez A. I had her for the honors option of this course and we are working together on 2 publications. She is one of the best chemistry professors at hofstra.
Dr. Sobel goes through the material in her lectures very quickly so many times it is hard to grasp the concepts that she is teaching. However, she is very lenient and flexible with assignments and truly cares that her students do well.
She curves the final grade. She gives two exams: an oral and a written exam. The oral exam is just like the one given as practice in class. The written exam is difficult. You can take quizzes twice. The textbook is free online. Overall, take her. The class is fairly difficult but fair and the curve makes up for it.
She's super nice and knows what she's talking about but would sometimes skip over whole topics and expect everyone to know it (or teach it to themselves). Her exams are very fair, and she gives a lot of homework but it's really helpful when studying. Overall I would recommend her, but I think if you didn't take AP Chem the class is a lot harder.
absolutely horrible. lectures are awfully fast paced and when she does practice problems, she doesn't take the time to explain what she's doing step by step. you're better off teaching yourself straight from the textbook. i've read other reviews saying shes sweet & caring one on one, that isnt the case. shes rude and snappy. will never take again
Gives out oral exam after each exam in class. Exams are tough.
Terrible class. It is clear that Sobel is very smart and teaches higher level chem classes but she is unable to teacher beginner level classes. Lectures are so fast paced! Condescending teacher who does not teach well. Would never take again - so much work and oral exams on weekends. You miss one class, youll be lost the whole semester. Avoid her!
Sobel is by far the worst chemistry professor that I have ver had. Her lectures are incredibly fast paced and she does not take the time to go over any questions or assignments. Tests are difficult and if you get an answer wrong, she does not provide feedback but rather leaves snarky comments on the side of the test (one time just writing, no)
Being the average learner this class was so difficult. Doing it for my major and getting through it was one thing but if I could have dropped I would have. I spent hours on chem101 over the weekends. On top of that I taught myself everything I know and spent lots of time at the tutoring center. She does curve but it could be bc nobody would pass...
AMAZING study guides for tests and homework actually helps. Textbook readings aren't needed to pass but helpful as she tends to fly through lectures. She is wonderful about helping students who are struggling. Take good notes and reach out to her with any questions & you will be fine, even if you are not a fan of chemistry. Curves class a lot.
She seems nice. She bakes stuff for us for the Friday class. Her study guides are usually exactly like the exams. But she's way too smart to teach this class. She lectures sooo fast and makes things seem way more complicated then they are. pretty much a self taught course tbh. if you don't know much ab chem, ur in for suffering. not impossible tho
Dr. Sobel was an OK professor. She is nice but not good at explaining when you need help during office hours. She curved the whole class's grades and you only need a 40% to pass. She gave ALEKS homework that we would spend hours on and wouldn't even learn in class. She teaches very fast too so if you take her go to tutoring every week
Sobel is very much a know-it all kind of professor. If you have a question, ask it during office hours, not in class or she will publicly embarrass you. Curves the class's overall grade or else everyone will fail. Passive aggressive over email and leaves rude, degrading and unhelpful comments on exams. However has somewhat good study guides.
Dr. Sobel is a fantastic teacher- her lectures are a little fast as long as you keep up with the reading you're all good. She's funny and willing to go over things as many times as needed. She also brought in treats every Friday for when we did worksheets. Her grading is really fair and she's super easy to meet with or talk to outside of class.
She is a very smart and kind professor but the assigned online homework was enraging because if you typed something slightly off or used a different form of getting the SAME answer, it would be wrong. Overall she's a good prof, just the homework sucks and the class is really hard
Chem 139 in itself is a difficult class, and I had many absences due to outside circumstances, but Dr. Sobel has been nothing but helpful and supportive. She is always there to help explain whats been missed or just talk about whats going on in your personal life. She is crazy kind and believes in you even when you don't.
Dr.Sobel is a great professor, she's respected in the science department and very supportive of the nursing program. Also, she enjoys helping her students. The only downside is she expects everyone to know everything. There are quizzes 2x (5-7questions) a week and the readings don't really help, I suggest getting a tutor for her class.
She clearly knows what she is talking about, but she is not meant to be a teacher. She expects you to know things that aren't always clear and will make you feel bad if you don't know the information.
If you love your life, don't take this class. She teaches so fast, you'll end up with whiplash at the end of the class. When she's doing over problems she literally solves them herself and then turns to the class like, any questions. Like be so fr bruh ... do not take her, take Mary Ronney instead.
Very well respected, but lectures like you already have a doctorate in chem. curves the hell out of class bc everyone fails. 2 days before test, you get a practice test that's almost exactly like the exam. goodluck if you take it.
It is a hard class, just stay on top of the work and ask questions. She is funny and likes all of her students/wants them to do well. Do the practice problem she gives out and she gives practice tests, the slides, aleks and group work. The grade is not just the exams and she gives extra credit on every exam and stuff you can do outside of class.
While the class was a little difficult and not the most enjoyable at times, professor sobel gave ample resources to help succeed on the tests and every test had extra credit. even if i didn't get the material right away i figured it out in time for the tests.
I thought I was somewhat smart until her class. She's very kind, but truthfully, she can't teach. She's too smart to teach this specific material, she expects you to lokwey already know it. The test... if you take her, good luck! Don't expect her to be lenient on grading... if you're wrong, you're wrong! She's sweet, but wouldn't recommend her!
She's nice and cares about her students, but is just a boring lecturer.
Professor Sobel seems really intense at first, and while she is very passionate about chemistry, she presents her lectures in an engaging way. The material she provides for test prep accurately reflects what is on the test, and makes it very easy for you to do well in the class.
Sobel is well versed in her subject but assumes everyone is as well. Exams 1-3 are very similar content wise to her practice exams but her 4th exam deviated annoyingly for her practice exam. When grading short/long answers she tries to give points anywhere possible. Her curve this semester was nonexistent.
Dr. Sobel is well respected and very knowledgeable in chemistry, but her teaching style is not very effective. She moves through slides extremely fast and assumes that everyone knows the material already, making lectures hard to follow. Her curve this semester was also absent as the cutoff for an A was a 95 despite the low class average..
