lectures need desperate improvement
pretty good teacher, try to help students understand the course.
very friendly and helpful
Bleh, I don't know, I find this class hard, and her teaching methods were really horrible before. Now I suppose it isn't too bad. But she needs to spice it up a little to keep us from falling asleep.
Really easy tests; good at explaining things
Great for c101 cuz she gives extremely easy exams. For c229 on the other hand her notes are nearly not sufficient enough to be comprehendable and u can sit in her class knowing something before it starts and after it ends no nothing of it no more. So try avoiding if u can for that class
Easiest tests I have ever wrote, but shes always wrong. Makes numerous mistakes in class and pretends she knows what shes doing.
Absolutely worthless as a teacher. You can tell she doesn't enjoy teaching. She has obscure ideas about teaching which she forces upon her students. She's not always respectful towards her students. She wasn't helpful and her lectures weren't very informative. Worst teacher I've had yet.
Not bad of a prof, you have to attend class to understand the concepts, helpful when i went to her office, midterms were easy, final was ok.. But she is kinda boring, especially a Tues/Thurs class at 930, there are only 60 ppl there, and no one ever makes a sound
Teacher was helpful and showed concern for students understanding material. A very small accent that was generally easy to understand. A few errors in lecture slides however prevent a perfect score.
she goes over concepts to make sure everybody understands and is really nice and helpful. kinda boring lectures tho.
listenning to her lecture for 1 hours <= reading the text book for 10 minutes...nobody at the back could see her writting at all, except the person who always eats an apple in her class, U will not hear any other noise...boring...exams are easy though...
very easy course to begin with and she furthers this with intense simplification-which can be boring at times. very nice and also helpful. the labs are also an easy component too and i recommend going to them
Heavy accent and boring lectures make the class hard to follow. Fairly helpful, but overall poor orator.
One of her greatest problems was her failure to explain concepts. As a result ppl often asked one another how what was going on - most of our class taught each other. Not approachable, and unclear. She seems annoyed that she has to teach, and does not supply a clear understanding of what is expected of the class.
(k so im the one w/ the apple, sorry i didnt know it was so loud), but i just wanna say that this prof was excellent, and the material was easy enough if u actually studied it, but if ur not y r u there ne way? totally easy to understand/almost no accent noticeable, the notes were environmentally-friendly for me[like 10pages] i recomend the course!
she's good, not great.
I found her very helpful and the concepts very clear. I never noticed that she had an accent.
Sadaf is a very good teacher. She is very helpful and nice. I like her.
She treated us like little kids, the class was unexciting/boring.
The material is very easy, and she has very unnoticable accent. Her exams are very easy, and she's always helpful. But I would recommend Jones' CMPUT 101 if you can get in before she leaves(summer 2k5).
This is a very simple class, not difficult at all. I spent every class sitting there half asleep, bored out of my mind. I found the prof went over and over the same concepts and it was just boring. She didn't make the material exciting or interesting at all.
Sadaf is an excellent prof and I really liked her
Sadaf Ahmed is a wonderful teacher. She is always willing to help and her explanations are very easy to understand. She also has a way of making potentially boring concepts interesting. There is no prior knowledge of math needed and if you attend class and do assigned readings/review lectures you’ll find this class very easy.
Sadaf is great! She made the class very easy and fun!It was worth going to her lectures and her slides are helpful. For most of the time I didn't even have to read a txtbook. She's very helpful and nice.If you pay attention in class,it will be very easy to get a good mark;)
She is just a great prof. She explains the materials very well and uses examples from our daily lives to get it into our heads. Repeats the important things we took in class in every class. Gives out her power point slides. Never used the book. Quizzes are easy but have some trick questions that must have been discussed in the class before.
Very helpful and Easy-to-Follow lectures. Fair exams. Highly recommended.
Great prof, I attended Tues and Thurs classes and they were pretty interesting. If you actually write down everything she writes and do the labs before your labs start you will have no problem getting A+. Midterms were easy and final was even easier. Open book midterms and finals made this class fun.
Absolutely attend every class, it's heavily information laden. She's a wonderfully sweet professor with a big heart, trying her best to explain complex algorithms. I highly recommend making sure you understand every part of the material, ask her questions, she's very approachable and will help in any way she can.
You have to attend every single lecture! Depending on which lecture you miss, you can fall behind and stay behind for the rest of the semester. She makes difficult topics easy and interesting. She's really nice and is always willing to answer questions too. Exams can be tricky if you're not careful though
Open book exams = Easiest A+ ever. Oh, and she's actually incredibly knowledgable. Take her class if you can.
Cheat sheets for all of the exams/quizzes, clear voice and slide, and over a week to complete each lab (she released them on Sunday so if your lab was on friday you would have 5 days to do it early and it would not be due for marking until the next lab giving you an extra week). Overall, a pretty easy class for the people who did their work.
Greatest prof ever! lots of examples, hints, things to know for exams/labs/assignments were discussed during lectures! Want a B-A? attend her lectures. take notes. Do the Labs ahead of time( lots of time given..) start early on assignments!
Awesome prof., totally recommend. Clear explanations. Course is quite easy if you like programming. If you don't go to class you're screwed as the lecture slides are fairly useless. Book is useless (never even bought it and got an A).
Good prof, nice and approachable. Has a little trouble explaining some of the more complex concepts but shes fairly clear. Don't buy the textbook. If you go to class you should be fine. Quite interesting course overall
Shes a great prof, like absolutely awesome, she's obviously super passionate about computer science which is all great. The only problem is that the course is so easy at the start and moves really slow but then all the hard material is pushed till the end, make sure u dont miss any classes for her, missing one class is a lot to catch up on!
She's a very good prof for this course and makes the all the points very clear. definitely recommended
Sadaf Ahmed is the most caring, funny, and big hearted professor ever. She really makes sure you understand and is there for you if you don't. She even held out of class help sessions if you wanted extra help. She really takes teaching to the next level and defines what a good teacher is.
Great prof, makes everything crystal clear. Easy coursework and labs and a good way to learn the basics of programming (using python, which is a pretty simple language). If you've done any programming before this will probably be one of the easier courses you take in your university career.
She is funny! She will usually try to do a small review every day which is very helpful! Her lectures are so organized and awesome! She cares so much about her students and is available at any time! Wonderful prof!
CMPUT 174 was really poorly taught this semester. I won't say most of it was Sadaf's fault; the CompSci department have COMPLETELY revamped the way they are teaching 174 and 175 (and not in a good way). In short, I really WOULDN'T take either if I were you (unless, of course, you're majoring in CompSci or think you'd be really good at it.)
I would never take her class. the ppt and slides wont help at all. she never stop when she is teaching and writing code on python, few people can write it down. BUT, SHE WILL ASK STUDENTS: U GOT IT ? it wont help anymore actually. poor !
Would take CMPUT classes with her again. Very good prof. clear and knowledgeable.
Rushes through notes at times. I had to self-teach most of the material.
Sadaf Ahmed, simply the best prof that the University of Alberta has hired. Goes through information carefully and is extremely detailed. She ensures that students understands, helpful in class demonstrations. She literally saved my semester.
she is a very good prof and try her best to teach and enable you to understand.
She is an amazing prof would definitely recommend her. She's really helpful and her lectures are very clear and if you don't get something she makes the explanations easier.
Good prof, a little bit rush at the end of the class. I go class everyday, even kind of tough for me, I got better than I thought.
This professor is awesome! She is super concerned about your understanding and she is really friendly and helpful! I never learned computer science before but I made a great job in her tests. Feel free to ask questions and taking her classes are extremely important for tests! Super clarity and nice communication!
I really like Sadaf! She really knows her stuff and makes a huge amount of effort to make sure everyone understands what she's explaining. She is really good about pointing out the most important concepts too.
Can be a little difficult to understand at times as she does have a slight accent. The material was straight forward and can easily be self-taught
She was really nice. Made herself available the morning of the final for last minute questions which was nice. She cares about her students, often asked me how it was going and when I told her I was struggling, she checked back with me. Attending class is a good idea because she gives hints about exams but perfect attendance not required.
As a third year student , this is my first time to rate a prof because she deserves it! Chose CMPUT 174 as an optional course with no coding experience before and still got an A+.Sadaf is a FANTASTIC lady wherever in class or in office, she makes the course easy. If you show up to lecture and do the labs, you can get any score you want! CHOOSE HER!
Really great professor, definitely recommend. Make sure you understand the codes she wrote in class. Ask if you don't, she is always willing to help and explain further if you put in the effort.
Really liked prof Ahmed. Found her approachable and easy to understand. She was often repetitive with certain questions or concepts, but it definitely helped me remember things (may differ for you depending on how you learn). Had her during Fall 2015.
Amazing Prof, a touch repetitive, but perhaps necessary in an introductory course. Very helpful and I came out feeling I learned a huge amount about programming. My only beef is her love of Comic Sans. Ugh, the font burns my eyes.
I had no coding experience prior to taking this class and at first I found it tough, but Prof. Ahmed was super helpful and really helped explain the concepts well. The online videos you have to watch in the beginning are super annoying but really important to establish base knowledge. Go to class and follow along and you'll do great.
A very caring professor who is passionate about her work. Make sure to do practice questions for the midterm and final.
Sadaf Ahmed teaches a very good introductory Computer Science course. The content of the course itself may be difficult for absolute beginners, but Sadaf is ready to help and answer any questions you may have. If you have any previous programming knowledge like I did, this class is an easy A.
An amazing prof I would like to take w/ again. She clearly explains concepts as well as repeats them so students get it in their head. If students don't understand, she's willing to go over the concept however many times. Fast on emailing and is amazing in her office explaining things.
If you have no experiencing in coding, PICK HER! Well, pick her any way because she is by far the best professor I came across in this University. Tests are super easy if you pay the tiniest attention in the class.
She is one of the best professor I've had so far. The concepts are taught fairly easy to understand, whenever there is confusions, she is always willing to help as long as you ask.
Best professor ever!!! Lecture is very clear and useful. Make sure you go to each lecture, you will get A easily.
The best prof in u of a! Love her so much. She is nice and friendly, and she is happy to help you. Her office hour is useful as well. Her lecture is useful, so do not skip class. Anyway, i will recommend this prof to people who want to take CMPUT 174.
Excellent professor. Cares about her student. Highly recommend.
Amazing professor, and no I'm not just saying that because I got a decent mark. I passed with a B+ but I worked for that mark. However, Sadaf is a really passionate prof who cares about her students. Visit her office for help with anything from the lab to the in-class material. Midterm and final were both fair. Easily the best prof I've had.
Sadaf is frankly an amazing prof. She always makes an effort to help students understand concepts in class, going fairly slow and reiterating important ideas. She is very accessible in office hours and is always very pleasant. She won't test on anything absurd, and is reasonable in her expectations for what we learned. Take 174 with her.
As a student majoring in psychology, comp sci was out of my realm. The first time I attempted to fill my credits I took comp sci 101 with prof Kerolus. It was a horrible experience that made me feel like I would never complete this credit. Sadaf works hard for her students to succeed, if you are in the same situation as me DO YOUR CLASS WITH SADAF
Sadaf Ahmed is a great prof for introductory Computing Science. Really takes the time to explain the concepts and answers students questions clearly and respectfully. Lectures are a bit dry though and if you have any prior experience it's a breeze.
She is very caring, and always checks in with her students during lecture to see if you understand. Explains topics thoroughly.
Best professor I have had (yet). She does a good job at getting the tougher concepts across by using analogies. By attending all the lectures you will learn everything you need to do well in the course. The exams are pretty easy, so don't stress over them, and make sure to get online vignettes over with asap.
For 174, she is the best. Explains very clearly. If u are a Computing Science major, U cannot get a start better than this.
She is my favourite teachers !! Her lecture is very useful and clear. Midterm is fair, assignments is a little challenge. She pays attention to students. Definitely recommend!!
She explains concepts very clearly in lecture and answers questions really well! Expectations for exams is clear and she is extremely helpful when studying. Great prof for beginners!
Great t professor. She explains the material well and really wants you to succeed. Take her class if possible.
She's probably my favorite professor at U of A thus far, she's a engaging lecturer who explains the sometimes obtuse concepts very, very clearly. She also is very open to helping students outside of class if they need. My only gripe with her is that it seemed like she spent a little too much time on certain concepts and rushed through others.
She's a great professor when it comes to explaining, teaching you how to think about the concepts, and how to apply the concepts properly. She really sets the bar high for professors which allows you to appreciate her class. I don't show up to a lot of classes because I feel I can learn better alone but I never missed one of her classes.
She really wants the students to learn, and tries to think of unique ways to get her message across. She has an accent, but you can still easily understand her. She has a lot of different grading criteria, such as pop quizzes, online quizzes, and exams. The exams are not heavily weighted, which is nice. No powerpoint with notes.
Dr. Ahmed is amazing. She: 1) Always responds to emails promptly 2) Explains things easily with props (Keuring machine lmao) 3) Gives tips about labs 4) Makes exams identical to problem sets or in-class examples 5) Accesible after class, at office hours or you can make an appointment The only annoying thing is pop quizzes (almost every Thursday)
Most of this course was online, but the part of it that was in class was great, Sadaf explained python programming in great detail, which was awesome for a beginner like me. With complete code and output examples as a part of her lecture slides uploaded online, this is definitely the prof you want for 174
I am not particularly good at coding but I do find it cool to an extent. Sadaf is a great professor and she is very willing to explain anything during lectures to ensure everyone understands. I am not sure if she designed the 2019 fall final but IT WAS RIDICULOUS AND EXHAUSTING. The final was somewhere around 80 OR 90 QUESTIONS.
She's an amazing prof! The best comp sci prof for any comp course. Me knowing a bit of coding made a difference but her explanation and lectures are amazing. She never tends to put people on spot when asking the class question.
Dr. Ahmed was a great prof! I took her class virtually (during CoViD). She was always well prepared for the classes and answers questions/ doubts really well.
Great professor to take this course with. She does a synchronous session once a week but it wont be recorded so you do have to attend as it contains important information that will help you with the labs.
Sadaf is one of the best profs this online learning. She makes you comfortable during class by telling you that it is always okay to ask questions. She always checks on her students if they understand the concepts and if not, she will explain them further. The quizzes, midterms, and finals are fine as long as you answer the practice questions.
Was so lovely! Explains everything in-depth, great with office hours and answering questions in class. Our class section was in person but she recorded every single lecture and uploaded them to eclass for the people that couldn't make it that day
Show up to 3 hours of lecture a week, still have another 1-5 hours of lecture videos a week. It doesn't add up. Please find a CS prof that uses class time effectively. The lectures were a huge waste of time, I would honestly recommend youtube videos to learn the content. Labs also have a steep learning curve after the first couple of weeks.
CMPUT174 is an extremely easy course if you have any programming experience, however, I imagine Sadaf's lectures would be incredibly helpful for beginners. For most, the lectures are quite skippable, yet if you need help with an assignment she will certainly provide it. Most importantly, she is very kind and caring, providing leniency when needed.
She's so sweet, I had no programming experience going into this class but she made it so easy and made me want to pursue computer science.
Prof is really nice, has a comforting aura. The class was mid though, I thought it was difficult. Labs were really easy for the first two weeks and brutal after that.
Great teacher. Explained all the concepts clearly and was always available for extra help.
Although I did not have any programming/coding experience before CMPUT174, I enjoyed it, and it encouraged me to take CMPUT175. Her lectures are clear and effective. She is very accommodating and helpful. In fact, she inspired me to continue to pursue more computer science courses.
I wouldn't be where I am today in the cs field without such a great and understanding prof teaching 175. Explains concepts really well and is happy to help you 1 on 1 if you're still confused during her lectures. There was constantly work to do (quizzes, labs, assignments, exams) but none of it felt overly difficult.
Made class time very engaging and explains concepts easily. Didnt have any prior coding experience going into this class but i learnt a lot thanks to her, highly recommend
If you don't already know how to code professor Ahmed is a perfect choice. She goes over each topic in detail and explains concepts very well, especially the more challenging ones. Additionally, if you miss a class you can easily catch up with the VERY good lecture slides provided. Quizzes, labs, and tests were all fair.
She was very caring and made sure everyone was on the same page during the lectures. She always told us how it's OK if we don't finish our labs because things happen sometimes. Although she didn't have office hours, she hosted online office hours sometimes and responded to emails promptly. Genuinely the best prof ever.
Great choice for an introductory CS professor. I had no experience programming coming in to 174, but I did very well in the course and that was largely due to the teaching and resources provided by Dr. Ahmed. If you do the labs and do a bit of studying, exams aren't bad at all.
She often mentions important stuff that will be on tests so attend class if you can. Clear and concise lecture. Caring individual. Take her if you can.
AMAZING. Her lectures are clear and follow everything you need to know for the labs and quizzes.
Omg, she is amazing! She elaborates on the materials very well, and she is really friendly and caring! Definitely would like to take her class well!
Very good lectures
She genuinely cares for her students as she refuses to continue the lecture if a single person is confused. She is very welcoming of help, and I look forward to having her again for CMPUT 175.
Amazing prof. Nothing more to say. You will not regret enrolling to her lectures
Excellent Professor, you won't regret taking any course with her, I took CMPUT 174 last sem and CMPUT 175 this sem with the same professor.
A very considerate prof, teaches well enough if you pay attention, you can also get most information you need from lecture slides available on eclass, she was available to answer questions if I had them. Labs are straightforward, online quizzes are fairly easy if you review, midterm and final require more revision but an A is a very achievable.
This is personally my favorite prof so far. Has a great understanding of the content, and explains it at a perfect pace for me to understand. She has a way of explaining, as well as makes sure she really digs in that point of whatever she's teaching. She reinstates the content, and applies it in multiple scenerio's. Very good prof.
slay queen
Very good :)
Prof Ahmed is knowledgeable and passionate and every lecture inspires me. Her lectures are engaging and always perfectly relevant. If you raise your hand she makes you feel like the best student in the world and she is always happy to answer questions after class. Assignments are time consuming but that's just CMPUT. 10/10 prof.
By far one of the best professors I have had in my university years. She is awesome. Highly recommend taking her class and not with other instructors.
As someone with some programming background coming into this course, Dr. Ahmed explained the concepts very well in a way that allows for a conventional understanding. They are often engaging, so if you want to follow along, you can't be asleep. She is also very good with office hours. I'll be happy to have her for CMPUT 175.
She exhibits an exceptional teaching style and a strong commitment to making CMPUT 174 an engaging and insightful course
If you don't select Professor Sadaf, don't choose any other professor. She is the best professor I have encountered at the U of A. She is very caring and wants all students to succeed. I can't praise her enough!
One of the best prof for a first year. She's really concerned about her students and would discuss the important questions for quiz, mid term and the final. Labs aren't that difficult as most of the important part of the codes would be explained by her in the class. Easy A, A+ if you're willing to keep up with the work load.
She was really resourceful and respected each and every student.
If it were possible, I'd want her to be my prof for every class, that's just how amazing she is. She's so passionate and respectful, you can truly tell that she cares about her students. Her lectures are very engaging so you have to pay close attention, but the way she explains things in detail, reiterates concepts and gives examples is just 10/10.
Lectures were engaging and sometimes helped with the weekly lab assignments. I didn't like the course material but still thought she was a good prof and taught the course well.
She's a great prof who takes keen interest in giving her lectures and makes sure students understand the concepts.
Some rough questions on quizzes, and her lectures aren't the most clear. She took a long time covering basic things only to gloss over the things that were actually difficult. Decent at answering questions and nice enough.
very good prof
Professor Ahmed is fantastic - engaging lectures, super helpful, and really cares about students. Using unstuckstudy alongside the free textbook helped me ace this class. Highly recommended!
I have no previous computer experience and found this course engaging and easy to follow. Sadaf explains the material using comparisons to everyday objects to better understand new concepts. She answered questions during lectures, and lead us through coding examples. Quizzes, labs and exams were representative of the material taught in class.
Great professor overall.
Greatly enjoyed attending her lectures. New concepts were walked through and explained very well, would recommend to anyone taking 174.
the most amazing lady ever i wanted to buy her a mug or something fr
She is very kind and caring, offers engaging lectures yet they can be a bit boring sometimes. A lot of topics are covered in this course and she sped through a lot of it which forces you to go back and learn a lot yourself. Prep for exams was useless and exams were tough, but luckily they were all open book and un-proctored.
Took her class for both CMPUT 174 & 175. Very good at breaking down information to easing you into programming. If you need extra help or questions, she is always willing. She does teach through repetition which I personally liked, however that may not fit your learning style. Very caring and understanding as well
Great course taught by a great prof who is very accommodating and always willing to go out of her way for students.
She doesn't reply my emails.
I can't say enough good things about this professor. She is truly the best instructor for CMPUT 174 and CMPUT 175. Her lectures are engaging, and she asks plenty of questions that keep you involved (even in an 8am class). Even if you come in with no coding experience, she makes the material easy to understand and you never feel lost.
There is no better prof for intro CS. She makes the material very accessible and understandable for literally any student. If you listen and participate in class, you are guaranteed to do well, which is not so hard to do when her class is so engaging. Labs can be tricky at times but overall not bad, and exams are easy if you pay attention in class.
