Finite math is hard, but he makes it worse. If you show correct work with a wrong answer, he'll give no points. He can't explain things different than the book. He won't answer questions. Don't take his class!
horrid...simply horrid. doesn't explain things well. hard to understand what he's saying. extremely boring! best advice, DO NOT take his class!
Can't communicate with the class beyond mumbling numbers under his breath.

If you have a choice, avoid this professor. Hardly answers questions, poor explanation of material, and class is boring.
Probably the worst teacher I have ever had. Good luck trying to understand him. I cant believe I pay for education like this!
hard to understand, had to learn the material by myself from the book, waste of time, avoid by all means
He doesn't explain the information very well. this is a boring class.
Worst professor in the world. He should be fired!
Difficult to understand. Not a very good professor. I probably wouldn't have passed if I didn't already know the material.
Worse Math instructor in the world. I'm not exaggerating. Probably the reason why he is still there is because of his position in the department. Mumbles numbers under his breath. I took him twice and had to drop the class, twice. I'm not a retard but when it comes to Math and him. I feel like one.
Don't take him. Repeat don't take him. 80% of his students end up failing and retaking the course. You won't understand him, he won't help you, and you will end up wasting your hard earned money. And he won't care. If you don't understand him initially, drop the class, it's impossible to catch up.
I love math, but this professor made me hate this class. He teaches to himself, and ignores everyone in the class. The only way to pass, is to ignore everything he says and teach yourself from the book.
This guy is the worst math instructor I have had. Verma is simply the worst instructor I have ever had he rambles and I asked what chapter he had taught and he said "Six, Seven, and Eight," yet nothing relevant to any of those chapters was taught. This guy should be replaced by a kid wearing a helmet. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
no good!
This teacher is terrible. Avoid this class if your trying to keep a good GPA. This is a breaker. Highest grade in the class was a 62%. Too late to drop, he needs to get fired.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY!!!! I took and dropped him took later with Khago (highly recommend) and did well. By the end of the semester there was less than 10 people in his class. He teaches this class hard hard to understand. He should be fired! Heard lotta bad stuff about his guy too on campus do not take him!!!
Verma gives you tricks that work in math, without doing the long math. If you pay attention you can get a good grade in the class. He gives you second chances on tests and the final. You can put all your effort into the class at the begining of the semester and pass.
I remember for one class he kept saying "re-element" over and over again. Confused as hell, I went home, studied on my own and saw he was trying to say "rearrange." Gaaaah take someone else!
Talks slow (like the guy on the visine commercials) takes a long time to explain one problem. Hard to follow and hear.
I really cannot understand why he's been teaching so long at this school. I highly recommend taking someone else. You can probably learn more from a wall than this guy.
worst teacher I ever had without a doubt
He is one of the best professors in the world!!!
Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said? This guy sucks. Granted, I'm not much of a math guy, but my dad's a nuclear engineer, and wasn't even able to figure out how in the heck the Good Professor was coming up with some of his answers. Avoid this guy, even if it means taking the class at a later date.
hard to understand
Avoid the teacher if you can, but if you take his course just study and get the concept of the problems he works in the class or the review tests he hands out.
Oh my goodness! I have never had a teacher quite like him. Our class was doing so badly that he had to change the whole way the grades we being calculated just so half of us would pass. Save some money and take another teacher... or go to CCSN and take this class if you have to.
Not the best teacher to take the class with. As the semester goes along about 80% of the class drops out, aviod him if you can. If you do decide to stick in his class the cuml. and final tests are easy since they are from the previous test. Study hard for an A!!!!
His class is definitely not an easy class, but he certainly knows what he is talking about. There were times that it took the entire class to solve one problem, so if you have any questions, stick around after class or go to him during office hours. It helps. Good luck!
Hard class, but if you do the work and pay attention in class he is a good teacher. Gives packets to do before test which almost mirror test. Hard not to get a good grade, unless you put no effort into the class. Would take again.
This teacher was one of the hardest teachers I have ever had. His accent did make it very difficult to understand and his knoldege of Calculus was great but he did not know how you teach the material well at all. I would not recomend any one taking this teacher for Calculus.
Beware!! This teacher was the hardest teacher ever. He has a heavy accent which makes it hard to understand and most of the class droped the class. He knows what he is talking about, but he can't teach the material. Avoid if you can.
His special hw assignments are almost exactly like the tests. His tests are almost exactly like the dep't final. If you pay attention, do the homework, and get over his accent (it's not THAT bad, grow up) it's impossible to not pass the class. Studying hard will earn you an A.
The material was difficult for me- He was always avaliable to help. Special homework assignments were very benificial.
This is the worst teacher I've ever took. Horrible, horrible, horrible accents, very hard to decipher handwriting. If you ask him a question, he'll just repeat what he said earlier. I understand more from reading the text than from listening to his lectures. AVOID HIS CLASS AT ALL COST! Otherwise you can expect a big hit on your GPA.
May seem hard at first, but stick with it. As long as you do and study from the Special Homework assignments, you'll do fine. He'll even give you the keys to them. Will replace Test 1 and 2 grades, with comprehensive and final exam grades. Would definitely take again.
getting an A in this class is not impossible. you have to rely on yourself, not the professor. he even tries his best to help out the grade, he pretty much is willing to drop every test and count your best test grade as your FINAL grade! problem is, if all your tests are F's...then that wouldn't help. Blah.
I took the class because Im doing a minor in math. The class seemed to be interesting (History of Math). Unfortunately, this guy is useless. he tries his best, but he just can't get his point accross. I'm a civil engineering major with only 5 credits left (GPA= 3.78) and still don't get what he's taking about. Run away while you can.
hard to understand not willing to explain material twice without attitude
Felt like you could ask a question, leave, than come back later, he wouldn't know you left, nor have stopped doing the question. I was retaking calc 1 and he does the calc rather than teaching the calc. He throws in Trig, when none is needed and expects you to memorize all the formulas that are normally given by others. Does some superfluous calc 2
Dr Verma knows his stuff, but there is a language barrier. He does not have a heavy accent, but it is clearly present along with a very soft voice. He cant answer a question directly, he seems to go off on a tangent. He wants his students to pass. For my class he ended up making the final exam the final grade. Be prepared. Not recommended...
He's too old, doesn't talk loud enough (which normally you could just move up) but combined with his accent it makes him hard to understand. He doesn't answer your questions very well, he'll do your problem on the board but will skip steps cause he does it in his head. If you want a grade above a C take somebody else
HATE THIS CLASS!!!!! he doesnt explain anything he just does the work on the board. and he goes so fast that you have no idea what is going on. he has a really hard accent to understand too... and if you ask him a question he doesnt answer it.. he looks at you like your stupid and moves on
His lecture is very confusing. He takes attendance, so you would have to be there every class. You have to study on your own if you want to get understand. But the Special Homework Assignment he gives you would help you prepare for the exams. Friday's class actually helps more than the regular classes, because it's a different instructor.
This teacher is the absolute WORST! He spends the entire class on 1 problem and mumbles to the board in his very deep accent. Does not talk to the teacher assistant, so don't expect to know your grade until it's turned in at the end of the semester. Tried asking him questions, but he doesn't understand and doesn't answer you.DO NOT TAKE HIM! Awful!
It was difficult to understand him with the accent but you'll get used to it eventually. He has 2 exams, 1 comprehensive exam and 1 departmental exam. He gives you study guides to study for the test. So as long as you do the hw and the study guides, you should be fine. Got a B+ and the attendance- you can just sign your name and leave afterwards.
that's right. even though its one hour class, he solves only one problem. ONLY ONE!!!! also, it is hard to understand what he says. it is unclear, bored, and unhelpful class i've never met.
I hated this class with a passion. I could hardly understand him and I sat way in the front. The only good thing about this class is that you get a different teacher on Fridays. He (Friday Teacher) was very understandable.
I recommend forming a study group on DAY ONE. You WILL NOT do well in Dr. Verma's class without outside help. Lectures are very random although he tests from EXACTLY what is on the board, so take copious notes, even if you dont quite understand what he is saying. Be prepared to memorize a lot and make sure you are up to speed on Algebra and Trig.
Wow, I can't believe some of the comments on this page. How can people say this class is hard? The homework packets are EXACTLY like the exams. If you can't understand a problem, go to the math department for help. Grow up, people.
The head of UNLV math department needs to step in and force the retirement of Dr. Verma. I know he has been around for years, but his class is unacceptable. The school is only hurting their reputation by putting kids in this guys classroom. It's a real shame, you will leave with a passing grade, frustrated beyond belief, and not learn anything.
He teaches you what is on the dept final. Do the Special HW that he gives and study from that.
The book for this class is awful and impossible to self-teach from. His lectures are hard to follow and understand, but he mostly is just reviews the homework. The material can be easy to difficult and very hard to grasp. Use his office hours as he is helpful. He is very respectable, but the class is overly difficult. NOT A HISTORY CLASS.
This guy thinks he's too smart to teach. If you don't get a problem and simply ask he acts like he's better than you and you're an idiot! worst math class I have ever taken! out of the entire class only 3 are passing. And trust me, it's more of a reflection on him than ourselves. don't take his course.
Halfway into the semester, deeply regretting not having checked this page. Everything mentioned up until now is still true: incoherent, half-senile, managing to make simple math a horrid affair, can't manage the syllabus schedule. Only saving grace is the wealth of practice tests, which you will need to do well unless you're a math major. Avoid.
Wow. Thats all I can say. 12 days before the final....I just got my second exam returned to me today. 56 on the first exam, 66 on the second. He took 14 points off because I transposed two numbers!! 75% of the class has dropped, and the ones that are left are failing. I may be looking at academic probation because of this class. Avoid!
His accent is something you get used to. I suggest using the book more and just take notes on what he writes on the board. I ask him questions, but 4 out of 5 times he doesn't understand what I'm asking. He's a smart guy, but he expects you to understand it instantly. I recommend any other professor but him, and if you're stuck with him, good luck.
easy class!! if you dont study, it looks like hard but if you study, its really easy!! i know he's accent is hard to understand but just study special homework, special homework is as same as exams. if you know how to solve all the problems in the homework, you will get A in this class and do wileyPLUS,
Awesome teacher gives great help and is super clear with his explanations and handwriting. Grading is fair and his tests our easy best math 126 teacher guaranteed.
Extremely hard to understand. I had to teach myself the concepts out of the book.
He's a very knowledgeable doctor of mathematics and if you listen carefully you'll learn a lot. He gives practice exams that are identical to the test so if you fail you don't belong in college. He'll even drop a low test score or two. Super easy class.
If you are okay paying $1000 to teach yourself calculus, this is the class to take. He is hard to hear, his lessons are unclear and he is often tardy to class. He doesn't teach calculus, he puts examples on the board and solves them. This would be okay, I guess, if he didn't make mistakes. He also jumps all over the place. Avoid if possible.
You will need to teach yourself in his class. He more likely lecture the board he writes on than the students in his class because that's the only thing near enough that can possibly hear him. He also stands in front of the things hes writing sometimes as well so you cant even get by through copying notes.
Very hard to understand at first due to accent but is occasionally funny. He doesn't really teach but just comes in, goes up to the board, and does problems. Everything was easy up until midsemester. Class got much harder after because I didn't have any previous knowledge of the content. If you have to take this teacher, good luck!
While his voice may be loud enough to hear, his mumbling is quite incomprehensible. I never understood anything he said. He doesn't teach but just does problems on the board for the duration of class and then stands in front of what he wrote. There's tons of homework online and you have to buy an access code to turn it in. I would avoid this class.
Impossible to understand. The first math class I have ever struggled in. But honestly if you get a good discussion teacher, you should be fine. Also, there is A LOT of homework, but you can just bs most of the paperwork he will never check it. Pay extra attention to the Special Hw. That is What the test is over. Good luck!
He is a very smart man BUT he is impossible to understand. He just mumbles and pretty much always faces the board. If you take him MAKE SURE you also get a lab with it because the GA I got was the reason I passed the class with a B. If I would have just had his class I would have failed for sure. The exams are very similar the Special HW
He speaks quietly and faces the board! I thought I could understand people with accents so I took the class despite what this website said... I regret that now. He doesn't care if you pass, fail, or understand. He encourages questions, but when you ask one he gets upset and yells at the class for not listening. Don't take this professor.
The other reviews of this professor are absolutely on point. Avoid this professor at all cost!!!Students who were expecting to learn precalculus from his lectures failed the course. If you must take his class, be prepared to spend countless hours teaching yourself math concepts out of the book and completing mandatory online homework.
DO NOT I repeat DO NOT take this class!!! He has a very thick accent and mumbles on top of that not to mention his nose is buried in the board. His TA was not helpful. If you had a question he talked to you like you were an idiot. Countless hours of online homework. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Dr. Verma is super sweet and very knowledgeable. I think he's earned his dues and is very respectable. He's hard to hear because he speaks so softly and stands right in front of what he's writing on the board, so sit in front right. His lectures are difficult to follow if you haven't opened your book. He gives you what you need to pass.
Dr Verma, while knowledgable, gets too easily taken off track. He truly can be helpful but when you have a class filled with clowns it is hard to keep him on track and not back go back over last classes material next class. 3 classes just going over a test is a bit absurd. Constantly starts class late and ends class later. Avoid if possible.
I got an A in this class but I had to use the text book to teach everything to myself. If you're good at math and have patience than take this class. The tests are not hard at all if you use the book but I couldn't imagine passing the class from lectures alone. And that is because he can go over the same lecture 4 times
Tenure is a horrid disease! UNLV unfortunately has some disgustingly condescending and stoic math teachers. The tutors who helped me the best were Engineer majors, not Math! You will be angered that you wasted your money on a teacher who honestly believes "that you are dumb" if you ask "basic" ?s. Math teachers at UNLV teach APATHY, not math!
Rude and unhelpful. Belittles students who have questions. Complains about the students at UNLV, thinks we are all "dumb." Does not allow for practice of Math problems in class, takes the entire hour 1/2 to write formulas! NOT ONE QUIZ, NO in class practice. Uses archaic "teaching" methods if you can even call it that! Should be let go. Really.
super hard to understand speaks in a low voice and doesn't understand your questions when you ask
The class is pretty difficult, especially for oncoming freshman. The tests are killer, as in they could destroy your grade if you mess up, and the TA isn't that helpful. But then again, it is an upper level class, so it's expected. Really, you just need to do the online assignments and study like never before.
Spring 2015 I've had my share of crap professors as Math Major, but Dr. Verma takes the cake. Dr. Verma doesn't lecture, he writes stuff on the board. He can't answer questions or break things down-- he just repeats himself. He's useless. If it weren't for the GA, I would have failed and learned nothing. Dr. Verma stress, confusion, frustration
Mandatory attendance to go and watch an old man solve equations to himself on the board. The ONLY reason I passed was because of the TA in the discussion section. Two days a week I'd work on other homework and on Friday I would actually learn material. Math Department even offered students to take an "Incomplete" grade and re-enroll them for Fall!
Do not by any means take this professor. Even if he is the only professor left and you need to take the course. He is that bad. There is absolutely nothing helpful about this man. He is the most miserable person I have come across. Please save your self the time, and don't even consider this professor.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! By far the worst teacher I've ever had. Extremely difficult to understand considering he mumbles to the board and has a strong accent. Spends the whole class scribbling on the board and never explains concepts. Gets frustrated when students ask questions and took 2 months to hand out a syllabus. Should be fired honestly.
I say this from being a engineering student and accustomed to high difficulty of classes as well as being far along in my college career at this point - this has been quite possibly the worst professor I have experienced. I am truly disappointed. Please, avoid this professor!
Had to drop this class AGAIN. This professor whispers his lectures and talks to the board. He is really unclear. I have a bad time with math already and just made it unbearable. He is older and I guess no longer has patience or cares about what he's doing. Bummer.
Dr. Verma is a great professer!
Dr. Verma's lectures are horrible. He literally speaks to the white board and whispers. Even if you sit up front, you'd still not be able to hear him. I just ended up skipping class and going to math tutoring instead.
He speaks to the wall and quietly. He clearly knows his stuff but as far as teaching goes, not so much. There is no communication between him and his GA either. Very much a self-taught class. Good luck!
This guy is possibly the worst professor at UNLV. You can't understand a single word he says, his "lectures" are so scattered and impossible to follow, and his tests are ridiculously hard. I was glad to get a C in this class. Avoid him at all costs. He is a complete waste of your time and money. Also, don't buy the book, never cracked it open once.
BE PREPARED TO TEACH YOURSELF PRE-CALC cause you will learn nothing from this Pro. He talks to the wall, thick accent. Lectures are scattered. Tons of homework. Ask a question and he will go in circles trying to answer it. Test are super hard. Its either get the problem right or no points. COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!! DON"T GET THIS PROFESSOR
Professor Verma truly cares about his students. He'll pass you if you fail all of the exams but pass the final exam. He truly tries to ensure that you understand the material and there are several chances to get a passing grade. Don't expect an A unless you truly work hard for it.
I could not understand what he was saying, and constantly made mistakes during class. If you can, switch out of his class.
This man took a simple subject, such as Finite Math, and made it the most difficult course ever. He mumbles every word and barely speaks up, making it very hard to understand him along with his accent. Avoid this professor at all costs.
Mumbles, and takes forever to teach a lesson. Be prepared to spend 75 minutes on one problem from the book and not have it help on any of the homework. Mumbles everything, talks to the board, and you're better off looking up videos on YouTube. Lecture notes are messy and unorganized, and if you have a question probably better to ask a peer instead.
I got put into Dr. Verma's class my first semester of college. Not only is he over 80 years old, you can't understand a word he says. Super nice old guy but definitely should not be teaching anymore:(
Professor Verma truly knows his math, but his class was hard to understand as he speaks very softly. Do the special homework assignment and take the time to understand how to solve those problems. That is your study guide for his exams. If you do poorly on his first two test, you can still pass if you do good on the comprehensive+final exam.
As long as you put some time and work on his special assignments, you wont have any trouble getting a good grade at his class. He is a very knowledgeable professor and gives you take home in every single test. Attendance is crucial, because that's how you will learn how to solve these special problems.
My biggest regret this past semester is not listening to the warnings about Prof Verma. The only section that fit my schedule was with Prof Verma, and what a mistake that was. He is extremely hard to understand (lisps, mumbles, accent) and his GA is no help either. I would leave class more confused than when I arrived. Do not take this professor.
Every single review that you read will say the same thing. I regret not reading those reviews beforehand. His accent is extremely hard to understand, he speaks softly and no matter how much I tried to reach out to him, he neglected my cry for help. Do not take this professor!
Professor Verma genuinely cares about his students, but if you take his class you may struggle like everybody. The reason I would take him again and gave him a good review is because the problems he assigns are the basis for differential equations, if you can solve his problems you'll be good. He's not bad, just maybe past his teaching prime.
Talks to the wall, can't hear him even when I'm literally in the front rows. I wish the TA taught the course instead of just the discussions. Lectures are not fruitful but sadly, you need to attend lectures or you'll be docked for absences.
I strongly advise against this teacher. Extremely difficult to understand and doesn't explain whats going on, just walks up to board and starts writing. Each test has a take home portion, but they're quite difficult. If you're solid at math, it's more worthwhile to teach yourself the subject outside of class. An independent study is a better option
Save yourself the trouble and do not take this professor ever. His lectures aren't worth going to, but you have to since all of the papers are given in person, not online. I get that he can't speak very clearly, but it's the fact that the homework problems will requires at least 2-3 hours per section, if you really try. Not worth it. Self-taught
The worst professor I've ever had at UNLV. He talked to the board very softly so nobody can understand or hear him. Exams were handwritten, took it to a tutor and was told its impossible to get a good grade in the time limit b/c its so confusing. Did a problem for 75 min and turns around to yell YES or NO. Took it a 2nd time w/ a new prof. got an A
Professor Vermas class was really difficult. However, the problems he assigned to you will help you understand the class. I hated him when I had him, but looking back at it I would take home again. I stayed up real late studying, sometimes until 5am, but his class has given me a solid foundation for my other engineering courses. Take him.
DO NOT take Dr. Verma. I chose to ignore these comments and now I'm paying the price. Both him and his TA is horrible. Dr. Verma is a very old man and he speaks very softly. He presents the concepts but won't really tell you how to apply it in problems. He makes a simple problem very complicated. I have never failed a class before but now I am
Verma was the worst professor that I have ever had. I never struggled with math until I took his class. He talks very quietly (and towards the board), and just yells "yes or no" the whole time. He expects you to know Math 182 stuff in Math 181 without having ever taken it. I failed all 3 tests, but passed only because everyone else was failing too.
Do the homework and make sure you read everything at least 3 times. Homework are a low percent grade but helps you understand the material because the lectures do not. Hard to read his writing and he is very soft spoken. Lectures are so hard to follow. He is sweet and thoughtful and so is his TA but self discipline is key or you will fail.
Given I have already taken calculus is high school I assumed that this class would be rather simple and I wouldn't need to do much work considering I already took the course, but I do not understand this at all. I feel bad for anyone that hasn't taken the course or has no experience because this teacher is the worst I've ever had
Don't take a class from him. His writing is difficult to read (at best), most of what he says is hard to understand if it can be heard at all, you'll probably only understand about 30-50% of what you can hear! so you'll actually understand about 20% of what is said. He's very smart, and nice, he's just not able to teach.
I do not recommend taking this professor by any means; he is very hard to understand in his old age. Passing this class requires a lot of self-study. The only reason I passed is that the cumulative and final exam are almost identical to the 1st and 2nd exam. I failed 3/4 exams but did better than most students so the slight grade curve helped.
Verma's lectures feel more like he is solving problems for show instead of actually teaching the material. On top of his writing being hard to understand, you will end up learning mainly from the book. I will admit by the final that I had a strong understanding of the material, but the experience was definitely not something I'd ever do again.
During class, he will demonstrate himself solving problems that have no relation to the homework or quizzes that we take during discussion days. There's a good amount of homework in the beginning, but it cools down. Quizzes weekly. In addition, you can't read his handwriting and you can barely understand him (if you can even hear him). Avoid him!!!
He seems like a nice guy; however, like the rest of the comments YOU CAN NOT UNDERSTAND HIM OR READ HIS HANDWRITING!!!! If you have to wait another semester to take a different professor, do it! If this is your first week at UNLV GET OUT NOW YOU CAN SWITCH OUT THE FIRST WEEK FOR SOMEONE BETTER!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM
Professor Verma's lectures are incomprehensible. He speaks with a heavy accent and speaks very quietly. He just goes over problems in the book that won't be on the tests. Once, we asked him for help on a study guide problem and he got the wrong answer. Avoid him if you can. Otherwise, make sure to pay attention during the discussion/to the TA.
Dr. Verma struggles to use the classroom technology. You can't hear him during lectures, you can't read terrible cursive, and he can't hear or see you asking questions. Most frustrating class I've ever taken. You're better off learning from Khan Academy or Organic Chemistry online. YOU WILL TEACH YOURSELF CALCULUS IN THIS CLASS, PERIOD
Took this in Spring 2020. The fact that he doesn't give study guides is enough of a reason to not choose this class. The only reason we were given study guides is because the class went online; for our first test we had zero information on what was going to be on it. Despite how hard you try, you cannot understand this professor. DO NOT TAKE!
Bad Teacher, His online lecture was bad. His handwriting is so bad you can not read what he is writing. He also do not know how to use technology and don't answer any one question in the chat unless you speck to him with a mic. Only reason I passed this class was because the TA was amazing. Need to learn on your own if you want to pass.
Professor Verma's class is one of those you dread to attend/do homework for, not only because he fails to help you succeed as his students, but also because he does a horrible job of encouraging his students to pass his class. I have never met such a professor that undermines his students and makes it sound like they know nothing. Never again.
I would suggest this professor for those who already have a basic understanding of calculus or math language and you want to strengthen your foundation. He teaches how formulas are derived rather than giving you formulas to memorize. Methods/Strategy over Memory. In my opinion, he's good if you are serious about higher mathematics.
I cannot understand his heavy accent, and also cannot read his handwriting. His online class consist of a camera aimed at a piece of paper, where he uses a fine tip pen to scribble problems down incomprehensibly because the camera is focusing on his hand. Also, he does not read chat, nor can he understand people's questions over voice chat. AVOID!
His handwriting is very unreadable. It took 15 minutes to tell him how to bump the quality from 240p to 720p, just for it to go back down in quality the next lecture. His tests are near-impossible to actually complete in 90 minutes considering the length of the proofs, and a curve is basically required. Only passed because of the incredible TA.
