messy, disorganized, terrible handwriting, terrible tests. would never take another class with her again.
Dr. Piatt is a nice person but her class is extremely hard. I had to teach myself for the whole semester. Homework doesn't relate to tests at all but it counts for overall grade so it's required. She has high expectations for her students shown through her tests, students must understand the materials and concepts 200/100% to score at least a 70.
Professor Piatt is very nice and helpful in understanding course material. That being said, the required course material is very demanding and requires a lot of outside studying and learning. Tests are the biggest challenge of the course as they are concept based while most homework is calculation based
Not bad, just need enough participation and go to the office hour.
The class itself is hard to comprehend since it's moving at a fast path, but things are not that bad once you spend time and effort studying for it. Dr.Piatt's class pushed me to become an independent learner.
As a student who had taken AP Chemistry, this class serves as a perfect review of the materials that were covered in the curriculum. Even though Dr.Piatt's class moves really fast and the tests are not easy, it definitely worth a try
Professor Piatt is nice and if you seek help, she is very helpful. The tests are extremely difficult, and the homework is long (I would like to note that she has shortened it since the beginning of the year when it was 50ish problems per week). The class is simply very difficult. Be ready to study a lot, but if you put in work, you will be ok.
I love Dr. Piatt. Many people give her bad ratings but that is just based off of the difficulty of this class. She is very enthusiastic and clearly wants her students to succeed. Lectures are engaging and she will always answer questions. Only downside is incredibly hard tests but she curves and offers extra credit.
Dr. Piatt is a super nice person and makes lectures fun and interesting. That being said, she assigns 30-question homeworks that are around 90% short-answer problems that are either highly-conceptual or super math-heavy. A lot of the problems reference material not taught in class and require lots of reading as well as outside research.
Expect to dedicate around 8 hours every week to this class on HW and reading only. HWs are long and difficult, and they make up 60% of your grade. Readings are upwards of 30 pages. Super fast-paced, but will clarify if asked to. She's super nice and very knowledgeable, though, but man, those HWs...
Dr. Piatt was always enthusiastic to teach us and clearly loves her job. Although a hard class, she is approachable and easy to ask for help from. Many students associate a class being hard with the professor being bad which is false. Dr. Piatt often provided extra credit and pretty fairly balanced exams with other assignments balancing grades.
Offers extra credit but exams are difficult. Homework is unnecessary because it doesn't help with understanding concepts. Good professor, not her fault Northeastern combines chem 1 and 2 in a semester.
What other comments for this class neglect is that this was her first time teaching the course, and she made that clear from the start. It's a hard class, but it's also a 5000-level. Everything was completely fair, and she had plenty of office hours to discuss anything. Some complaints are justified, but she's still a great professor.
Dr. Piatt is very passionate, however, the organization of the class is not good. Lectures, HW, and recitations are math info, while the tests are only conceptual questions. It is very hard to study for the very difficult tests, and even her lectures are ver disorganized. She is helpful in office hours and did shorten some of the HW.
When everyone did horrible on the first exam because she changed the format and test material the night (literally less that 12 hours) before she excused everyone of cheating. She also makes things very difficult for no reason (like being able to see the test answers, recitation which turned into a group quiz, and others). Extra credit was nice.
For some reason, the majority of the reviews made on this site were removed, only the bad ones. Chemistry made my first semester here miserable. Dr. Piatt's class was particularly harder than the other professors and her final was 90 questions. Although Piatt is nice and smart, homework was 60+ questions and her lectures were very hard to follow.
Save yourself.
Like others said, many of the negative reviews were deleted/removed. Piatt's tests are not similar to homework or recitation questions, making studying effectively very difficult. Her homework was too much for the first half of the semester before enough people complained to her higher-ups and she had to decrease it.
do urself a favor and don't take this class.
Don't take her class. Trust me. All the good reviews are lying to you. She is a terrible teacher and deserves all the bad reviews.
ptsd from the military doesn't compare to the traumatic flashbacks from this class.
Take the other teacher, please. She cant teach like at all.
Lectures were unorganized and tests were convoluted and confusing. I never felt like I was being tested on the content from lecture or homework. Mandatory attendance so youre forced to listen to her useless lectures and then go learn content yourself. When asked for feedback about her teaching she responded by telling us we need to teach ourselves.
Piatt's class is almost unacceptable for a university, especially as a first year. While taking a chemistry course designed for engineers, you'd expect to be doing a lot of math. While that is true during lectures, your long homework assignments, and recitations, her tests are 100% conceptual and require ZERO math, forcing you to memorize the book
If I was offered free tuition to take another class with her I would decline
She's a very kind-hearted person. It was her 1st semster teaching, but it was a struggle. There was a big disparity since she emphasized doing all these math-heavy homework/recitation problems but the test was majority conceptual questions and required barely any math. She does offer extra credit opportunities, curves, and tests have less weight.
I think she's a brilliant chemist, just not very great at teaching. She's relatively new to teaching as well. Her tests/quizzes are different than the homework. There is SO MUCH homework, each assignment is between 30 to 40 questions. The lectures dont really teach me much, and the textbook isn't too helpful either. Good luck!
This may be the worst class I have ever taken simply because of how terrible of a teacher Ms.Piatt is. Nothing she taught was on the test, and she has no care over whether her students understand the material or not. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO ENJOY LIFE!
Her notes are a mess, her homework and recitation problems do not match the exam at all, the exams are really conceptual while the hw and recitation are math based. Also for a class full of engineers, I think that the exams should have more math. She talks a whole lot of nothing during her lectures. Also late to class quite a few times.
Absolutely garbage
Lectures cover half a chapter in 65 mins, making it feel like review. Homework is 35 questions weekly plus self-learning. Homework and recitation are math based, yet tests are entirely conceptual and demand a deeper understanding beyond class content. Attendance is mandatory through exit tickets. Might be a good chemist, but not a good teacher.
For a class that contains majority first-years, Professor Piatt isn't well-equipped enough to help students get through an already difficult class. The homework's given are mathematic based, but the test for the same topics of the homework was completely conceptual. The lectures don't have time to cover everything so you are always playing catch up.
Professor Piatt is, most likely, the worst teacher I have encountered or will encounter in the future. She cannot teach, her lectures/slides are disorganized & messy, her homework takes hours weekly for 0 results on the test. In fact, NOTHING that Piatt assigns is applicable to her ridiculous, conceptual-only exams. You are better off not studying.
she's really just not good at teaching
Professor Piatt has no idea what she is doing when it comes to teaching chemistry. It is visible that she knows chemistry herself, but it is in transferring her knowledge where she is severely, obviously lacking. Her lectures and homework don't really translate to her tests at all. The tests are purely conceptual while everything else done is math.
Sadie Piatt is a terrible professor she doesn't know how to answer our questions. Tests are impossible. I would rather go to church for 3 hrs everyday for the rest of my life than attend another of her lectures. “I'm Jewish btw”
Upon meeting her, Dr.Piatt is clearly a very caring person and believes that everyone can succeed in her class. That being said, the effort expected and required to do well is astronomical compared to anything you faced in high school. You NEED to spend several hours before lecture reading the textbook and understanding every tiny detail.
She doesn't teach very well and the tests aren't really related to the lectures or homework. Do not take this class if you have that option. It isn't worth the stress and effort.
DO NOT TAKE! (read that again) This is coming from a student who had an A in AP Chemistry and a 3 on the AP exam (2 semesters worth of chemistry). The tests are nothing like homework and don't bother bringing your calculator... you won't touch it. Find another teacher please. I would say good luck, but you'll need a lot more than that!
Dr. Piat is very funny and caring professor. The class is ridiculously hard tho but she knows it and tries to support as much as she can. However, she is still very strict and will not allow any late submissions. DO NOR SKIP LECTURES. It's just a very hard and fast paced class you will fall behind if you don't put effort into keeping up with it.
Super difficult class but she totally made it doable. Read the textbook and take notes before class and you'll be fine. Chemistry is NOT my thing but as long as I took notes and read the textbook, this was a pretty average class.
Dr. Piatt is much nicer and funnier than she seems! Her office hours are super helpful for homework and questions, and you might even meet her adorable dog, Taffy. While her exams are concept-heavy and challenging, she includes a curve and only grades 30/40 questions, which boosts your chances. Plus, she's generous with extra credit.
Class is very textbook-heavy. I suggest you purchase a physical copy of the textbook so you can highlight and take notes along the way. It is super helpful to read the chapters BEFORE you attend lectures, or else you'll be confused during lecture and not know how to answer exit tickets. It is nice that she posts the lecture slides beforehand too.
Are you actually kidding me? The last couple of posts from Nov 21st are all fake!! Its literally Proffesor Piatt making these posts to boost her rating. Everything she said in those posts are stuff she says in class, but the self-glaze is crazy! Read the other posts and you will get a better understanding!
If you're willing to put the work in she is great. Loves chemistry and is very open to questions and will do whatever you need to understand a subject. However, you need to put in a lot of work outside of class, textbook readings ahead of class, lots of homework, and lots of studying. A reasonable grader though who offers a lot of extra credit.
Don't worry, here are some ways to succeed in her class. 1. Jump on all extra credit opportunities - You get like 10% back just for attending a 30 min review sesh. 2. DO TEXTBOOK PROBLEMS at the end of each chapt to review for tests (most important if you want a good grade) 3. Read textbook before class and bring questions to class!!! 4. USE EFFORT
Spare yourself
She uses an insane grading scheme and an unreasonable amount of drops to make up for the fact that she is not qualified to teach 2 semesters of chem in 1. And she can act like we're the ones doing the poor job. Avoid her at all costs for 1151.
Her lectures are just you sitting there for an hour while you get even more confused. She expects that you know a lot of "general" chem knowledge, but it isn't as "general". What helped me towards the end was taking my own notes from the textbook. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities which is nice. It's a weed-out class.
Worst professor I will ever have. Things that are taught in class, homework problems, and test questions are all styled completely, so how confident you are on what you learn/practice will not translate to the exam.
Exam questions are very conceptual, and are nothing like the examples we are given during lectures. Like those tiktoks going "lecture, homework, then exam" where the exam is impossible, that is exactly how this class is like.
The professor also does not provide sufficient resources for preparation, sure there are textbook questions and office hours, but refuses to give us anything else to help us prepare for exams. At the beginning of the year even stated that she "does not believe in practice exams".
Exams given seems unfair. The other professors gives 20 question multiple choice exams with a provided equation sheet and often multiple practice exams, while for this course we had 45 points worth of consisting of fill in the blank, set up equation, and other non-multiple choice question and instead allowed to make our own one page equation sheet.
The homework is more practical, meanwhile tests are completely conceptual and are extremely difficult to study for. I was doing good until the first midterm, I had a solid comprehension of the info and still got a bad grade due to how the test was set. It destroyed my self esteem and I just came to the conclusion that her tests were basically luck.
Avoid this professor at all cost, if you do end up in her class, I wish the the best of luck.
I went into this class thinking ppl were exaggerating... now i regret my choices. Take this class if you dont want to live a happy life.
Bad, Ineffective Teaching, Confusing, Horrible.
very tough class, tests were conceptual and didn't reflect the math-heavy homework. She expects us to dedicate many hours solely to her class which, when balancing with other courses, becomes very difficult.
Bad grader, just bad… sent us an email saying we'd get our grade by a certain date but then we would not get grade until the next day. Plus she doesn't write anything on exams when grading them so we can't see what we misssed besides asking for answers during exam reviews and office hours.
horrible teacher id rather lick the subway floor than take this class again
she treats this class as if its your only class. transfer out immediately if you have her
Can we just start by recognizing she wrote a few reviews herself?? No student talks like that and it was her only recent good ratings. That shows what type of person she is. NO laptops; she makes you exit tickets for attendance and makes you pay to do homework. She uses a ridiculous grading scale to make up for everyone failing her tests. RUN AWAY.
Sadie is short for sadist btw.
Class single-handedly made me religious. I now believe in the devil
The class is extremely hard but that's gonna be the case regardless of the teacher. I don't think piatt deserves the hate she gets she's curves all the test heavily and has many many policies that compensate for the inherent difficulty of the class
Dr. Piatt is not a great professor, even though I think she's a sweet person. Her tests are unrelated to her homework, making it a guessing game. I went to office hours and tutoring often, which helped maintain an alright grade. I'd avoid taking her if possible unless you want to do 20-30 hours of chem work a week outside of class.
she's a terrible professor and needs to change careers. you'll fail if you miss a certain amount of classes. #saveherdog #whythedogsoquiet
had to get diagnosed for ADHD and prescribed Adderal just to do ok in this class
I blame all of all nighters on this class, not even worth it since the homework does not help with the exams.
I'm gonna be honest. If there was 1 word to describe this professor it's "terrible". Look at her rating from other students, says a lot. I'm an A student. I never had a C before. But this class just ruins everything. RIP to my GPA. C is basically a failure. Idc if C's get a diploma too, this class is not worth the stress I/WE been through.
The amount of coffee I've consumed to stay up late studying for the exams could've given me stage 3 cancer.
These last few reviews are INSANE. Im one of Piatts students from her 9 am lecture, and yes the class is very difficult, but thank god she grades us on more than just the difficult exams. My grade is a B just for doing well on homework, recitation, and exit tickets - which is 40% of my grade. The other 60% is exams, which she curves so its not bad.
I found myself putting almost all my time into this class alone. Tests are very conceptual and the homework being math-based does not help at all with them so you get like no practice. Piatt is nice and easy to reach but she makes the class very difficult.
Her tests are ALL conceptual whereas lectures, recitation, and homework are all mathematical-based. She is kind but a terrible teacher. If you have the option for a different Gen Chem teacher do it. Keep your sanity!
A lot of the reviews are harsh, and a lot of them exaggerate. Midterm averages were 60%, she gives ~10% extra credit opportunities to each but realistically youll get a 5% boost from it. She's nice in person but start praying if lord forbid you email her, she's the most passive aggressive teacher I've had and my email was about a mistake she made.
Attendance is mandatory via daily paper exit tickets. Lectures follow the textbook in order. She says to read ahead, that's unrealistic. Homework and recitation are math-heavy, but tests are fully conceptual and need no calculators. It makes it SO hard to study. Email or visit office hours for help; she's really weird but helpful one-on-one.
Dr. Piatt has a terribly organized class. Her homework, lectures, and recitations often do not correspond to the midterms or final. Our final had ZERO, and I mean ZERO calculator questions even though all of the hundreds of homework assignments were extremely math heavy If you are reading this in the summer, do not take her class, switch to Murga
Dr. Piatt has a disjointed class structure with tests mismatched to the homework. She tends to treat her students as if we are not adults, threatening to kick students out of the class or even threatening course dismissal over chewing gum, or using phones during lecture. This class was not a fun way to start my morning and took all I had.
Interesting course material and lectures. HW sets are difficult but fair. Dr. Piatt is always willing to explain questions and concepts during office hours.
Caring and smart professor - but the way the class is structured + the course-load is a nightmare.
Why does everyone hate piatt so much😭😭she was genuinely so nice
RUN while she seems super sweet and I am sure she is outside of being a professor, I absolutely hated this class. I was constantly confused and she never really took the time to make sure we understood what was going on. My only saving grace was the curve at the end. I once went to office hours and felt like I was bothering her by showing up.
VERY difficult class. The tests are all conceptual while the homework and recitation are all math heavy. To this day, I don't know how I passed this class.
Participation is mandatory but she doesn't teach
would not recommend in the slightest
literally treats this class like it's your only class. tests aren't related to the homework at all. 50 questions of homework a week. Reading guides that take 5 hours each (2 reading guides per week) expect exams to not have anything to do with what you covered in class. Know all the concepts that seem insanely irrelevant. Save yourselves.
really easy to fall behind in your other classes bc this class is so draining and soul sucking.
Had to take therapy because bc of this class. Stay away if you care about your grades.
This class is actually insane. Material taught in class is literally not on the test, and the textbook readings are very very very long. HW is math-based, while tests are literally conceptual. Please avoid this class if you want to pass chem.
Gave up after the first test. If you get her, don't even bother studying; just try to switch out immediately.
I thought I could thug it out...I coudnt. I am currently failing.
Dr. Piatt is a caring person and it is clear she is passionate for chemistry as she loves the class and teaching. However, get ready for how fast pace and challenging this class will be. It is definitely humbling. Her homework is more mathematical heavy while test are more conceptual. All nighters are expected so use every resource you can.
The professor is very passionate about the subject, and her lectures are overall interesting and worth listening to. However, mandatory attendance combined with heavy homework workloads made the course overwhelming, especially due to the fact that the tests are conceptualized rather than homework-based.
I thought I understood chemistry but unfortunately this class proved me wrong. The homework, lectures, and tests seem to all be different, causing it to be quite difficult to study. There is also a ton of work to do on top of studying for the frequent exams, making this a very overwhelming class. Definitely consider a different section!
Dr. Piatt is caring and is really passionate about chemistry. However, when after taking AP Chem in high school, I'm struggling to do well. This class is fast paced & there's a lot of concepts and applicational needed, making it hard to keep up. Test questions are extremely difficult. She truly wants students to do well, but the course is hard.
She gives so much homework that takes so long to do.
Where do I even begin. If you want to suffer and barely pass a course, this is the class for you. She as a person is a really nice person! Now as a professor, we swap perspectives. She grades the exams like her life depends on it where the avg is below a 55, and makes it unbearable. She also assigns work like you have NO other classes.
all words that are synonymous with horrible.
tests are NOTHING like the homework. passionate professor, but unable to teach effectively/doesn't prepare you for the exams. don't get too close with your classmates, they'll probably drop. take that as a sign and join them while you're ahead. dr piatt makes an alr difficult course even more unbearable. horrible, HORRIBLE prof.
Get ready for an accelerated college course that WILL make you cry. THIS IS COLLEGE. It's okay if you cry, change is hard. Piatt does an excellent job teaching chemistry and humbling you for the college experience (which is CRUCIAL for success). If you accept the facts above, you will do good in her class and actually get something out of class.
I came into this class excited, hopeful, but most of all... naive. When they said Sadie was short for sadist, they meant it. Beneath the guise of a sweet, caring, eager-to-help professor lies a sinister ulterior motive: to torture innocent pre-med/eng minds. When I say run, wallahi, I mean every word of it. Class averages are literally in the 50s.
I took this course 2 years ago, am now in medical school, and felt compelled to post to comfort any pre-meds fighting for their life in this course. The exams are on PhD level material, and Dr. Piatt has absolutely zero empathy. If you need the credits, hang in there. Nothing will ever be as hard as this. also HOW IS THIS IS A 3 CREDIT COURSE
liar liar pants on fire
run fast and run far.
Switch out NOW! Although Dr. Piatt is very kind and passionate, her teaching and mandatory lectures are not helpful at all. I've never been more stressed in my life. There 4 midterms which are nothing like the weekly homework which are also impossible. Class averages are in the 50s.This class has honestly ruined my first semester of college.
Terrible professor. She jumps between topics so fast it's impossible to follow. I had to miss two weeks for a family emergency, and she told me she would fail me—zero empathy. Look at the other bard reviews; they're true. Avoid her if you can.
Absolutely the WORST professor ever. HOURS of homework every day so there is no time to study and tests look nothing like what she assigns. Homework due the first day of break and a midterm right before it. She rushes through everything, averages are in the 50s, and shows zero empathy. Its like she purposely makes class miserable. AVOID this class
Prof. Piatt's instruction is clear, but the course is extremely difficult. Expect a lecture-heavy, test-heavy class with Lots of Homework. The immense workload makes this class highly stressful. I do not recommend taking her due to the massive time commitment.
Prof. Piatt is incredibly passionate & knowledgeable about chemistry. However, for an introductory-level class, the work and effort expected was unbearable & unrealistic. The exams are frequent & difficult, the homework is outrageous, and overall, the class was very stressful. I do NOT recommend if you value your mental health.
If you truly think you can go through 1 whole semester worth of 2 semester material go for it, but that actually means doing the absolute most to get a C-. Of course college will be hard for the first semester BUT HONESTLY switch out of this class for your mental sanity. You don't need to make it even harder with an accelerated lecture.
I should have known when we had a quiz the first day of class I should have dropped, there is no one to blame but yourself if you stay in Dr.Piatt class! Prepare for the worst. Pray every night as much as you can...you'll need it and good luck. EVERYONE cries at least once taking this class. Don't get me started on the all nighters as well..YIKES!!
Trust me when I say no one is exaggerating in her rate my professor. No one is being petty or being bias. It is the truth. Dr.Piatt will give you homework problems that will have you staying up late at night questioning ur ability to do anything. Yet, somehow all the test end up being conceptual..?Highly questionable. GOOD LUCK.
Run fast. Don't take her. She doesn't know what she's doing
Honestly if my major did not stop me from changing my professor... I WOULD HAVE. I am in this class by force not by choice. So many people have withdrawal from this class as we went, and I am infact next! Good luck for anyone who has her next semester and protein chemistry.
I cannot understand what she learned
It honestly feels like she TRIES to make chemistry horrible. Homework consists of endless math problems only to have conceptual test questions every midterm. She gives points back if you go into her office to review the midterm, but she is unhelpful with actually reviewing questions and only really cares about her dog. Avoid at all costs.
Do not take this class with Dr. Piatt. Do not take any class with Dr. Piatt.
take a class with Sadie if you hate yourself or are on adderall
Sadie, I know you read these because your so self conscious, so maybe instead of leaving fake positive reviews like you did last year to try and make yourself feel better, you should be improving your class. if your taking 1151, switch to another teacher or drop the class. She's a joke of a teacher.
This class requires so much dedication. She knows her stuff, but the issue lies in the way she teaches. She speeds through the lectures and moves on to a new topic. Also, no matter how much you try to do the practice problems or homework, the exams always look different. To be honest, if you love yourself enough, PLEASE don't take this class.
This was the first class I've ever dropped in my life, and to add to that, this was the WORST class I've ever taken. She was a horrible grader. Her tests are insanely hard. I would hope I would get hit by a car while walking to this class, that was how much I didn't want to go. Seriously if you are taking this class DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS EVER!
this class is literally a death sentence..prob worse if im being honest. i would literally rather have my limbs ripped apart by an electric scooter than take this class again. she is probably the worst professor at this university. im so serious, i dont know how she still has a job here. listen to the reviews and avoid AT ALL COSTS
Before you take this class, keep in mind 60% of the original class dropped or withdrew. If that's not a sign of bad teaching idk what is. Midterm averages are in the 50s as test questions expect you to have a phd in chemistry. While it's not impossible to do well in this class, it's highly unlikely. Assigns too many HW problems that are unrelated.
Switch out of the class if you get her. You'll thank yourself later.
She is very passionate (probably to a crazy level) and her lectures are fairly engaging, but you HAVE TO READ THE TEXTBOOK to know what is going on in them. Sometimes her explanations are confusing. The problem is that she gives a ton of homework, including conceptual and math busy work. The workload is overwhelming and not applicable to the tests.
Literally don't know what to do anymore. If you think these reviews are "dramatic", I promise they're not. Extremely nice person & clearly passionate about chemistry, but unless you want to be in a class with the average being consistently in the 50's, don't do it. AP Chem also DOES NOT HELP. You've been warned. Run before its too late.
This class is honestly a fight to survive, and I am not even exaggerating here. All the reviews may seem dramatic, but they're all so accurate. Her homework doesn't relate to the exams, and she gives a crazy amount of it. There is literally nothing you can do to prepare for the exams. If you can, switch professors or drop this class.
I've seen some reviews on here say that she's a very nice person despite being a hard teacher. I'm here to say that's wrong. She's incredibly full of herself and clearly doesn't care about her students well being.
I would rather look like her shriveled malnourished dog for the rest of my life than take another one of her tests. Yo Sadie feed your dog
Became religious just so I can pray on her downfall.
This professor is just so bad, believe me. The worst choice I've ever made is not drop the course and change another professor. She just made everything so bad, never choose this course!
RUN WHILE YOU HAVE THE CHANCE!!!!!!!! This class has ruined my life and GPA. I wanna die at this point. No matter how hard you study for an exam, you'll never find it easy.
The worst class I've ever taken in my whole entire life. Math is usually taught in lectures and is in the HW problems but the test is mainly conceptual and is impossible to understand. Please save yourself from this torture and switch out while you can.
Honestly, I did not become serious in my religion or praying until I had to take this class. This class has shown me just a glimpse of what hell may look like. Run while you can. Honestly, sure she's 'nice' but sometimes I wonder if it's a front so people can feel bad. She deserves all the criticism she gets. Nothing good comes out of taking this.
avoid at all costs...
Piatt is terrible. Its really annoying to switch teachers but do it. I didn't believe in rate my professor and thought that teachers could never be that bad, but I swear to you that she is. She is the only reason I don't have a 4.0 and the only reason that hate chem. class averages were 50% on tests while the other teacher was 80%. RUN
I'm gonna try not to be mean bc Sadie is very sweet and passionate about chemistry, but pick another professor. The exams feel like grad school exams and are very difficult. Other people I know in chem1161 who have a different professor do so much better in the class. PLEASE save yourself from ruining your gpa.
A DEMON FROM HELL
The way she structured the class is ridiculous. Her exams is full of BS with how it is full of conceptual questions that even a GRAD student couldn't even answer. Avoid this professor at all cost if you want your mental health to be sane and reduce the workload off class.
I do not know what negative Karma I had built up in my past life for me to get this Professor. I can't even say too many bad things about her, cause shes genuinely passionate about chemistry and teaching it, but passion does not always mean you should do something.
This class with her made seriously start considering my own faith and relations with a higher power.
I wouldn't wish this class upon my worst enemy.
Do not take this class by any means. Do not think you can thug it out. Piatt's class was absolute hell. She gives unreal amounts of homework, assigns daily homeworks on top of that, and once you get through all of those, nothing you learned matches the questions on the exams. Do not take this class, switch out, do your grades and sanity a favor.
Dr. Piatt is enthusiastic about Gen chem. This is ironic because I didn't learn anything. There is so much reading. Grade is based on tests and the questions asked don't match anything on the homework. It is very fast paced so be ready to do reading guides before each class. homeworks each week. Side note but get ready to see her anorexic dog.
Well well well where do I begin? Good ol' Sadie Piatt has been the vein of my existence. My world would go black whenever I stepped into a lecture. Be ready to get called on and feel humiliated in front of the class for not knowing basic thermodynamics! Textbook? Homework? Forget about it! For it means NOTHING on exams :)(My king Noah still goated)
I thought somehow, I could've thugged it out, but NO. I had to drop and honestly it felt like a boulder was lifted off my shoulders. PLEASE don't take this class if you're sane. ALSO, if your advisor tells you not to withdraw DO IT ANYWAY. You're better off taking a W/dropping than failing a class that feels impossible to understand.
I would rather grate the skin off my hands with an electric cheese grater than listen to sadie piatt shout useless material for another hour and a half. Attendance is mandatory, which is ironic considering how unrelated class content is to the exam. Even the TA is scared of her. Justice for Alan and justice for her malnourished dog
An incarnation of the Devil's daughter. By all means and in any circumstance, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Too much hw where she thinks our schedule revolves around her class, cold calls in class to humiliate you, mandatory attendance, and exams unrelated to the homework ur doing? Her dog is the pure visualization of what you will become after her class.
ok the professor herself is pretty nice, but her class is brutal, very text took heavy, homework doesn't really relate to what we do. I've tried studying doesn't even matter. I would try a different prof..
I had my v-card before this class, but I got effed so many times over by taking it. She doesn't care about you and takes pleasure in seeing you fail. The fact that so many students did horribly on ALL of the midterms speaks volumes. Also, she got to feed her ratty ahh dog.
all her students hate her. for good reason. if you want to be degraded and mentally tortured then this class is for you!!
I HAD TO SELL MY SOUL TO RECEIVE AN A IN THIS CLASS. MY FRIEND JUMPED OFF THE 4TH FLOOR OF SNELL WHEN MIDTERM 4 CAME OUT. WHY THE F WAS THE RAW AVERAGE A 10%!? SHE NEEDS TO CHANGE HER SHI!
everyone failed so bad that she made the passing grade a 49%. she cold calls and does horribly explaining things.
I thought it wouldn't be that bad. It was that bad and worse. If you love and respect yourself PLEASE switch out asap. She assigns a ton of math-heavy homework and then gives tests that are entirely conceptual. Doesn't care how sick you are, you could be blasting out of both ends and still have to come in for the exam. Also her dog is ugly
Bruh, she wrote the good reviews herself, so believe what everyone else is saying. She doesn't care about you, she doesn't even seem to like her students, and she gives off an annoying high school teacher vibe. She knows chemistry, but is a HORRIBLE teacher.
pov: it's the summer before your freshman year. an ambitious, aspiring engineer, you look up your future chem professor on rmp. ‘it can't possibly be that bad', you think to yourself, blissfully ignorant to the horrors that await you. it is that bad. if you're reading this, and you can switch out, do it. if you can't, pick a god and start praying.
I'm the first to defend a teacher who has a bad rap, but this is the first time where I physically can't do that. Purposely makes the class more difficult than it has to be, and everyday I hope the T or oncoming traffic takes me out before lecture does. My immune system is about to collapse because I have been in fight or flight since day one. Run.
HOW TO DO WELL WITHOUT BEING A GENIUS: -Actually do readings before class. In-class stuff mirrors exams, so being familiar helps you retain it way better -Exams are super conceptual. Besides weekly HW I did zero practice problems and got an 85 avg on midterms. Slides and reading guides are your best friend. -Get used to being overwhelmed Good luck!
PLEASE AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!!!!! She tests all her students like they have a doctorate in chemistry. Very smart and knowledgeable but genuinely cannot teach at all. She makes her exams so unbearable and so difficult for no reason. Exam averages are always 50-60%. Please save yourself and your GPA, switch out if you can. #Saveherdog
This class is the sole reason I am turning religious. Ain't no way people are going to take protein chem with you Sadie.
If she weren't a baddie I don't think I'd have the motivation to wake up for class. Midterms only get harder throughout the semester. If you aren't coming to class after already learning the topic, you'll be behind and fail. Homework is entirely math based and is a waste of time when preparing for midterms, which are entirely conceptual.
dont reccomend
this professor ruined my life and I got prescribed anxiety medicine and I got put on adderall but I'm still failing. I feel like her malnourished dog. I went to hell and back and I am still in hell. im so glad I don't have see her face again. please save yourself before it is too late. I am being serious.
This person if you can even call her that, has made so many people drop out in the first week, something like 60%. You should be apart of the 60%, I'm surprised that this teacher hasn't lost her job. She's actually the worst, listen to the reviews, save yourself.
Genuinely the worst professor and a great way to bomb your GPA as a freshman. Remove her from schools period. Cannot teach for her life or prepare students for any exams.
This class caused me so much anxiety. :(
Literally dropped out of her class after the first day when she cold called us and gave us a graded pop quiz. Idk whether it's her slick back's giving her a free face lift or smth else but for some reason she just has such a passion for making her students lives hell
Such a g... everyone hating so much for what smh... sybau
She's been writing herself good reviews, which is embarrassing. But it is also embarrassing to not realize that you need to make a change as a teacher when ALL of your students hate you. The lack of accountability is what gets me.
i would recommend this class if you want anxiety and want to fail :)
she continues to give outrageous test even upperclassmen are not able to solve! I thought I'd be ready for this class but no matter what it is SO difficult. No one is exaggerating or being dramatic. Only reason why test average even get higher is after half the people drop.
please help me
the 5 stars are sora ai generated
can we j acknowledge that she wrote the good reviews herself
Many people felt very strongly against Piatt, but I actually really enjoyed the lectures and teaching style. You can tell that Piatt knows a lot about chemistry and is very passionate about it. Tests are difficult but every single one including the final is curved. This class isn't easy, but it wouldn't be engineering without being difficult.
Sadie Piatt is without a doubt the worst teacher I have ever seen in my life. She doesn't care about her students at all. If you dared email her she would respond with the most patronizing, passive aggressive email that is no help at all. I would rather drop out of this school than take any class with her again. She is the devil incarnate.
I would rather be skinned alive than take a class with her again. She is the most heinous person I've ever met. How she has a job at this school is baffling. There are not enough characters on this post to explain all the things she has done or said. She needs to get cracked or smth bc she has a lot of hate inside of her.
Sadie we know youre writing positive reviews for yourself. Maybe instead of taking your time trying to make yourself seem better, Iisten to your students and try to teach more effectively. And feed your dog.
She presents you with the necessary information via lectures and homework, but two things make her and this class suck. One, she will call you out for being on your phone and thinks she is so cool since she went to Harvard. Two, you never know what to expect on the midterms or final. So much different from how the material is taught.
Don't take Dr. Piatt's course if you have a choice. Pretty good lectures and mostly friendly in office hours. Tests were very difficult and conceptual. You might use one of those equations on your notecard, if any. Study by reviewing lectures and reading the textbook. Averages for our first 3 midterms were around 55-60% after scaling.
Drop at all costs before it's too late. Her homework has nothing to do with her tests, and she cold calls when no one in the class even understands what she's lecturing on. Switch your professor if you get her.
Do NOT take her. I did the mistake of thinking "how bad can this be?" but oh my god she single-handedly made my whole semester 100 times harder. She gives sooo much homework, attendance is mandatory with exit tickets, which, mind you, she gives a 0 sometimes, even if you hand them to her. The test questions are nothing like our textbook problems.
Do not take. Nothing that's we studied was on the test. Worst professor ever. Petition to fire Sadie.
Lots of errors in homework and lectures. Does not show up to class prepared and often comes late. Cancels office hours frequently on the day of office hours. Please do not take
Avoid at all costs
Prof. Piatt knows what she's talking about, and is very knowledgeable in chemistry. However, she falls flat when teaching the material. The work required to do well in this class is absurd. I have had to put in around 10x (actually) the amount of work of my other 3 courses combined into this one. It's a weed-out class 100%, avoid her if possible
The tests are really hard to prepare for. The lectures are helpful and mandatory. This professor is a tough professor but really shows an enthusiasm for the class. And while there aren't curves there area lot of bonus questions the non-final tests.
run while you can.
She was a nice lady but oh my god going to that class felt like I was peeling my skin off. Trying to open that door felt like I was ripping my eye balls out of their sockets. Oh my god if I ever caught that women out on the streets I would straight up off myself in front of her to know what she has cau
Sweet lady but oh my goodness walking into that class felt like I was ripping my own tongue out of my mouth and eating it. her long gaze of her eyes made me feel like my skin had been turned to gelatin. Going into that classroom felt like all of my skin was being torn off I have never wished that I had died before taking this class more.
Overall reputation is prolly a bit too harsh. I did have times where I felt she did care about me as a student and she isn't a bad person imo. But in terms of the class, yeah this fried me and the workload is lowk insane. I put like hours into this class each day and being successful in the class definitely hurt other aspects of my life/school.
My roommate had her. She is the single reason for his joy being stolen and reduced his social life heavily. His life became chemistry to the point of having nightmares about it. Hours of work required every night with a TON of homework that isn't helpful for conceptual tests. Drop at all costs. Lowkey heard she was a baddie tho. #bringmyroomateback
I hated her but I hated her dog so much more. That dog made me want to do bad thing I don't even want to say(I wanted to cook that dog and eat it in front of her) I don't know who I am anymore this class turned me into a bad bad person and I fear I won't be welcomed by society when I'm done with freshman year
Get ready to pull out every single AI tool from your booty hole because holy moly, the amount of homework she gives you is astronomical. I'm just glad that I passed and never have to see or hear her again. I literally think I'll have PTSD if I hear the name "Piatt". At least I won a blanket from her, now it sits in my dorm. Feels weird to use it.
she must be really given she went viral on yik yak for being bad lol
She uses slides and is not very effective at teaching. Her lectures are given on the assumption that you have completed 1-2 hours of reading beforehand. I didn't use AI for any class besides this one. Homework takes hours and hours and hours to complete, but is of very little use on Exams. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS PLEASE PLEASE.
horrid stuff
hell nah boi
just drop it
I skipped class once because I didn't read the textbook and was too scared to be cold-called on and humiliated.
i agree with 99% of all the 1 star ratings on here, teaching method not effective. tons of homework, cold calling students, mandatory exit tickets, incomprehensible material risked taking this class at the start of the semester hoping that she would revise her course based on previous feedback, big mistake not even a window in the room
