She taught the first chunk of the class well, then told us to read the text book. It was a mad scramble at the end, and she literally TAUGHT us NOTHING. Text is too wordy, and study guide doesn't give you enough. I would never take one of her classes AGAIN.
I do believe that she ditched out on more classes than I did. She often came to class unprepared. Even the final review class she managed to ditch with the excuse of having a meeting...if you are a prof, should you schedule a meeting during your teaching time?
She doesn't know how to spell and she doesn't seem to really know much about linguistics. Her assignments are piontless. The first midterm was super easy but she made the second midterm and final really difficult which wasn't very fair. She let us out too early a lot of days instead of teaching us. Not a good teacher.
she is very approachable and nice and caring. Also, she is very fair.
I have to say, I really enjoyed this class. She is such an intelligent person. She is extremely knowledgeable and very organized. She always had very good lectures prepared and made the material easy to understand. I really liked that she did not regurgitate the textbook so it made it useful to go to class. very nice lady also.
A very intelligent lady. She knows what she's talking about. Very helpful and approachable. A very nice person and really cares about the students and makes sure they understand what they are doing. Enjoyed this class.
She is a very nice teacher and always ready to help. He knows her material and explains it in an interesting manner which is easy to undersrtand. She is open to student input and respects everyone's opinions. I appreciated her class and learned a lot.
I didn't think i would, but i really enjoyed the class. Safia is passionate about her work and knows her material well. she has an excellent way of teaching and explains things very well. she is also a very nice and approachable person. I would probably take another class with her.
Assignments were interesting and well-formatted/explained. she marks fairly and does expect students to do their share. explains grammar well so it's easy.
loved her grammar lessons. I actually understood them. interesting lectures and well formatted assignments.
is very listen to her students and make sure they understand as you can ask her again if you don't get it or understand.. She is very happy to explain to you again..
I hated English in the past but she made it very interesting. Very intelligent and excellent at analyzing poetry and short stories. Makes it fun and loves what she does. You will be happy if you take her class.
I have no idea how this prof has received such high ratings. She cannot spell, has many many errors on tests, handouts, overheads, etc. She is extremely convoluted in her speech, and very very confusing. She took weeks to return tests and assignments (ie. 2 and a half weeks to give back a 50 point multiple choice/matching midterm) STAY AWAY!
This Proff was by far one of the most laziest I have come across in two years. Two and a half weeks to get a midterm back, awful notes (scattered) which makes it difficult to study for exams. Has classes which are completely dedicated to working in workbooks cause she is too lazy to teach. Evidently does not want to teach when she cancels class!
Classes are almost always a complete waste of time. Cancelled, ended early, or wasted on workbook questions. Thank god we had a textbook otherwise her disorganized and error-filled lessons would have me helplessly confused. Some exam questions were definitely surprises. I got the impression that she was tired and cared very little about the class.
Not sure how she's a prof. Lectures were wasted on excessive examples because the ones she gives aren't clear or correct. Her marking is inconsisent, and she didn't own up to the mistakes she made. I lost three percent of each test because she can't count and blamed me for writing my notes wrong when I fought an answer (they weren't wrong.)
Seems like a really nice lady, but yikes, I would stay away from this prof for Ling if you possibly can. Her lectures were terribly messy and disorganized. Most exams were confusing and had errors in the questions. If you choose to take this course from her, make sure you get the text and read it. Ends class early everyday.
Wow... I'm glad to see that there are people on here not afraid to say exactly how I felt. Her classes were so disorganized, she arrived late for almost every class and she literally would contradict herself at least once per class. The information itself was interesting, however I learned more from the textbook than from her. STAY AWAY!
AH! I think I left every class frustrated with her. She needs some organization, she is nice and marks fairly, but just lazy I guess. Her tests, however, do not reflect what is taught. Be prepared to not understand her notes.
I think the people who have been posting the negative notes here were the ones either who were lazy / disorganized themselves or absent often.I am in my final year and thought she was an excellent instructor.Very approachable and explains concepts clearly.also uses examples to back up concepts.this is a university course people!
I really enjoyed her class, even though it was 8:00 in the morning. She is just great.
I love this proff; she is amazing. Very knoledgeable about material and great lectures. Varies lecture style so not boring and often gets the class involved which is great. Very fair assessments and grading. She is very helpful and will make sure everyone understands concepts. Would love to take another class with her.
Her notes were very easy to understand, concise and to the point, and gave examples for each concept. Encouraged students to apply concepts. Made her expectations quite clear. Regular but small assignments that were helpful, but not time consuming. A well run class with reasonable expectations. No complaints.
All mid terms were designed too long with only 50 minutes to complete them. She contradicts her self constantly and provides little help when you come to her with concerns about your midterm or quiz mark and blames your poor percentage on your notes being wrong, when they are in fact not any different from any other person in the class. Withdraw.
She was an amazing teacher. Everything she taught was clear and made sense, and on my first midterm I got 98%, unheard of for me. If you show up to class and pay attention and participate when necessary you can easily pass this court. Shes very approachable and will answer any questions you have
Great Teacher
She is a great teacher. It was a fun class, which I did not expect. Lectures were clear and interesting. She is a very nice, smart and helpful professor.
Safia is a fantastic proff. She totally made English interesting and it was a class I enjoyed going to. She is very intelligent and knows her stuff. Very helpful, encouraging and always available for help. She is very approachable and friendly. I would love to take 103 with her.
Safia is the best English proff you can imagine. Very knowledgeable and makes assignment expectations very clear Also a very fair marker. You will love her class
Fantastic is all I can say. I hope I can take 103 with her.
She is the most organized and clear professor I have ever had so far. She makes class enjoyable and really cares about student success. Very fair marker and she makes her expectations for assignments very clear. I would definitely recommend her.
If you hate English or are scared of it, take Safia's class and you will change your mind!
Safia is the best English teacher I have ever had! She really knows how to explain difficult concepts in a clear, understandable manner. She is very helpful and makes you feel comfortable about asking questions. I would love to take another class with her.
Very nice lady and really cares about student success. She made class fun to go to and she is quite intelligent. I loved this class.
AMAZING! She really knows how to teach and is very helpful. I liked her a lot and I learned a lot in her class. Nice person too.
She is an excellent proff and she has given me my confidence back as far as English class is concerned. I am very grateful to her for all that she has taught me. I actually looked forward to going to this class on a regular basis. Truly a lovely human being.
This was a really good class. She is always prepared and willing to answer questions patiently. She really knows how to teach and she never makes you feel like you don't know anything. It is also nice that she actually uses the textbook whenever possible. Will definitely take another class with her.
Wonderful!
Safia was great. This was my fav class by far. She is very intelligent yet kind and helpful. She has a very good sense of presenting material in a logical and understandable manner.
A really good class. You have to work but it is a fun, interesting class. The proff is a classy person and very nice.
I was so scared to take English but Safia made it very understandable and I enjoyed it a lot. She is firm but helpful and approachable.
My favorite proff and course this year and I am not even a great writer. Safia helped me improve my writing a lot this semester and it was interesting. I looked forward to going to class.
Safia is an amazing professor, hands down my favourite this semester. She was always very clear during lectures and in explaining exactly how she wanted assignments done. She was also always willing to help, and a very fair marker. The class assignments and schedule was set up to help busy students excel. If you have never liked english, take her!
She knows how to teach and it was a fun class. I never felt intimidated and she is nice. She is very fair too.
Great prof, very understanding. I would take her again :)
She is a fantastic proff. I hightly recommend her. Very understandable lectures and clear assignment expectations. Also very nice.
Interesting and enjoyable class. Safia is very clear as a lecturer and with assignment expectations. She's very helpful and a fair marker. She uses a variety of teaching styles and makes the class enjoyable. She's very knowledgeable too! Would love to take another class with her.
She was excellent at explaining concepts and had clear expectations. She respects her students and is very patient with questions and very willing to provide help. She even made poetry fun! I loved the class.
Was often unclear as to what she expects of students on assignments.
Make sure you do exactly what she asks you to do on assignmentspapers because if you are off topic by a bit she will deduct serious marks or even give you a 0.
Clear-cut expectations. Tough at times with regards to communication and standards, but a very considerate and fair instructor. She skips the BS, which saves time, and assigns topics for her papers that anyone can relate to. She actually made the course a please to take. Just make sure you find NOTE BUDDY. If you miss class, you're on your own.
She was a great teacher. I wanted her for Egnlish 111. She was also really helpful with the essay she assigned and had some great topics
She is a great teacher. However she is not tech savvy, she used the over head projector for most lectures, and does not post them online. She only posts the assignments and due dates online. Also we had 3 grammar tests that were a little bit difficult if you do not study.
She doesn't post anything on blackboard but her lectures aren't boring!
Both her midterm and final were laughably easy. She hands out study guides a week before, outlining what topics to look at. The study guide is essentially the test. She tells you it's not a comprehensive list, but it is. She marks extremely hard on papers though, as if to compensate.
Safia is such a sweet person! There were a lot of assignments where we had to work in groups, but it was fairly easy. English was very difficult for me in High school, but with Safia I managed to get a really good grade. As long as you go to class you will pass! She is also an easy marker!
My advice read the syllabus uses it like religion attend class i was foolish and missed so much and trust me it will hurt you Pay attention and use the textbook she is hard to communicate with over email because sometimes she won't inform you of changes to the schedule
Good luck passing this class she is very strict and doesn't let you get away with missing anything doesn't post on blackboard
She is a insert word, same excuse for every students bad grade. "please review lecture notes and go over structure" her notes where a highlighting of another students assignment. Awfully rude and extremely lazy. Avoid avoid avoid
Took it as an online class so can't speak to her abilities in-class, but her expectations of a first year junior-level English course were completely unrealistic. I have been writing papers for years now and never had any issues, but Safia was a very harsh grader and did not provide useful feedback to improve. Takes forever to return papers. AVOID!
She is really a nice prof. Her quizzes are really easy which will definitely bring your marks up.
She's honestly a sweet lady but is one horrible prof she grades so hard the paper she makes you do will bring your mark down quiet low. Wouldn't recommend her!
I wish I had switched classes early enough. She talks so mono-toned and reads everything word for word from her notes. She hardly explains anything and her class feels so disorganized. Halfway through the semester and I just gotta tough it out now.
VERY checked-out, both in lecture and in email correspondence with our entire class. If you need help go to a student. Not the material is difficult by any means, it's easy to do well. There are plenty of passionate profs who would love to be teaching this course. Safia is not one of them. No powerpoints or whiteboard use, all spoken lecture.
I loved her and her class. She extended papers up till a week after the due date (but you wouldn't receive any feedback if you handed it in late). She was very helpful during office hours and told us we could bring her our essays and ask for help if we needed to. But there's attendance marks and no notes on Black Board
Safia was great. Every few classes there woukd be group sessions to improve your skills for the class which were super fun. She has a great late policy and is super helpful/accessible. Does not post to BlackBoard though. I would definitely take her class again.
She was one of my favorite instructors by far. Go to class and take notes, easy A. Her note are GREAT and easy to understand. Would take her again!
Great prof. Very organized lectures and assessments. Fair marker and she is very nice and approachable and helpful. Would definitely take her class again.
Sweet lady, easy to talk to, but she tends to mix up her examples often, which can be very aggravating to someone trying to grasp the material. Homework is rare and easy. She does use the workbook often enough, but emphasizes that you should focus on what's taught in class, not the textbook (which includes material she doesn't). Slow, quiet class.
She's a nice prof and easy to talk to but she is extremely vague when it comes to assignments. She grades super hard without giving a rubric so you don't even know where you lost marks other than the feedback she writes on your assignment. She extends the due date 5 days past, although if you hand it in late she won't give you any written feedback.
Loved her, amazing teacher. Very easy marker but gives well deserved grades! Allows late hand ins, with only the compromise of feedback. Well respected, so nice and caring, and a wonderful professor. 100% would take again!
good prof. follow the guidelines for assignments and youll be fine.
The terrible experience with the terrible co-called professor. Doesn't reply promptly, omissions and mistakes in her grammar quizzes, no real feedback on my paper. She was getting very angry when I corrected her pronunciation and grammar. I believe that the MacEwan should hire more professional and educated English teachers. Avoid at any cost.
I dropped this course due to "English" teacher. She simply doesn't fit to postsecondary level and clueless about teaching. She doesn't rubrics and avoiding to provide any feedback (she gives trade-off one late submission without giving feedback). Don't really understand the learning process with a sufficient feedback etc. JUST RUN, SAVE YOUR MONEY
She is so nice and is the type of prof that actually cares about you passing. I felt happy whenever I had her class. She is very good at teaching. Is understanding and makes sure everyone gets what is going on. If you show up listen and practice the material you will pass.
Doesn't prepare for lectures before hand. Tests were simple but her teaching method consisted of reading to us directly from the textbook, and writing on a piece of paper that was projected on the white board. dont expect her to have any powerpoints, and if you have any questions or missed a class you have to ask another student.
Shes very kind and an easy person to talk to.
I had to take this course in my 4th year and she runs it like we are in high school. You can hand in assignments late, there were only 2 quizzes throughout the whole semester & she cancels classes or ends class early. She provided structures and templates of the assignments, but she didn't provide clear/precise guidelines.
Had her for both ling 100 and writ 101. She's awesome. Attend every class, don't do anything but play on ur phone and you'll get an easy A. I wish I was joking... super sweet too. She gives so many chances. Also, read her rubrics carefully.
The most terrible "teacher" I've ever had in my life. After 3 English courses at NAIT and two at MacEwan with A+, I' got 65% at my first assignment. She didn't provide any rubrics, her feedback with two sentences is standard (copy and pasted) to all my classmates. So, many mistakes in modules, and she doesn't have enough skills for postsec level.
She is lazy when it comes to teaching classes online. There is no coursework aside from a few papers. There was a group of modules that i did with my eyes closed and received full credit, they did nothing. She provided the class with no information and even turned myself and classmates down when we asked for additional information.
Doesnt give good feedback and will not provide rubrics or clear guidelines. the worst prof i have ever had. word count is always so low its impossible to write something good. bummet
Safia is a terrible "professor", with no clear guidelines, no rubrics, no feedback, biased grading. Take a real teacher, don't recommend her.
Safia gives good feedback, gives extra materials to help with papers. She responds to her emails and is easy to understand
Love her, she is the sweetest.
Safia did a really good job of organizing an online course. The content was laid out well and she gave many chances to retake quizzes. Her writing assignments had very low word counts which actually made them a little bit difficult to do. Other than that, the quizzes, midterm, and final were super easy.
I didn't attend a single class or lecture that was held, and passed with an A. Also, the final exam was expected to be 650 words long, no quotes, or research was needed. Take this prof if you want a VERY laid back english class, style was not for me though.
Professor Ahmad is an easygoing teacher. She marks very easily and gives decent feedback. If you want a laid-back class, take Professor Ahmad's. Her style, while not what I usually like, was a welcome break considering my heavier load of Law classes. While she did send us online for some reason, I would take her class again.
Was really inspired to appreciate language after taking LING101 w Safia. Her lectures are content heavy and not posted on meskanas, but if she repeats concepts and gives thorough demonstration. Class participation will really help you succeed; however, beware the asynchronous portion of the course - it's a bit of a beast.
Safia seems a good person; however, she isn't up to a college/uni level. She didn't prepare for class, her quizzes, assignments come with mistakes and unclear instructions. Also, I was disappointed by her feedback ((one standard sentence:). If you are A-student avoid if it possible; if you are "C" you can take her (just keep a distance).
Safia was great for the most part; she gave study guides, which was basically the test. Her lectures were interesting cause she just talked, and you need to type as quickly as you can. The class has 3 quizzes, 1 midterm, a paper and a final. My only complaint is it went online halfway through, which was not said before signing up for class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
She assigned 2 and a half hours of a tv show to watch within two days, spent a total of ten minutes talking about it in class, and moved on. Final was a handwritten essay with a word minimum and maximum that was way too close (75 words), and had to be done in pen. Yes it was an easy class, but it was beyond frustrating to do.
Worst class i've taken! she made what was supposed to be an easy class difficult. Her lectures were boring and sometimes useless.
Safia was great, she graded relatively fast. If I had any questions they would be answered within the day. The layout of the course was clear. There were 4 essay assignments so plenty of opportunity to increase your mark. I don't love english courses but enjoyed this class!
she is so sweet! only thing is shes vocal and doesnt present anything, if u miss something ask the person next to you. shes made me really enjoy IPA and history of english. she answers questions directly and clearly:) she also gives us the test a week before to study, same sheet word for word, also gives study guids + allows a cheat sheet for final
Professor Ahmad runs a pretty easy English class. While the assignments can be a bit lackluster, she's an approachable and understanding instructor. The workload is manageable, and unstuck study proved to be a helpful study tool alongside the provided materials.
Gives amazing feedback, Love her! Would take her class again
