Safieh is a wonderful prof who you see really cares about her students. She is extremely fair in the sense that she tells you exactly what she expects of you. Watching the lecture is critical. The material/examples she covers in class are important and I found she only tests you on such material. The exams are really fair IF you study. Hard work.
Her lectures are interesting, make you easy to memorize the lecture concept. BUT, the tests and exam will be so damn hard. THINGS she mentions might be in exam, none of them are in, like what the hell.
Grear prof! Clear and concise lectures.
The course was supposed to be super bird but guess what, it was the EXACT OPPOSITE! A lot of content to memorize and quite a few quizzes, assignments and then tutorial quizzes! Would 10000% not recommend if you have no interest in linguistics and are just trying to fill a breadth requirement as youll 90% either drop or CR/NCR
I took LINB18 with her. The course content in general is pretty straight forward. You definitely do need to work for your mark as there are a lot of little assignments, quizzes and discussion questions to keep up with. However, as a prof I find her to be pretty clear in describing the concepts. Sometimes her quizzes and assignments can be hard
Safieh goes at a pace that allow students to understand everything that she is doing. She makes sure that you understand topics before moving on to a new one. In lecture, she provides many examples which help a lot. She also provides bonuses for those that attend lectures through giving quiz/assignment answers or actual bonus marks. Super funny!
She is a cool professor but her assignments are challenging.
She explains everything v well. Makes sure you understand everything. Is very funny and keeps the class laughing.
Lectures were clear but material was very dull. Have to stay on top of the lecture material as there are three quizzes and assignments which are challenging. Also have to complete TopHat and Tutorial Homework. Exams were fair
easy courses if you put in a little effort. The content itself is not hard BUT she ALWAYS releases her final grades late, like 1 week into the next semester
Safieh is the best teacher I've had, ever. She intimidated me at first, but I got to know that she's a very understanding and overall wonderful person. She makes everything as clear as she possibly can without spoonfeeding you. I absolutley recommend taking her classes 110%.
Not professional.
She never replies to emails even after you have sent her like five emails. it is a pain to wait for her response.
Absolutely disappointed compared to the rest of the instructors at UofT. Unprofessional. Absolute chatterbox. Gets irrelevant to frequently. Poor empathy towards students. Most garbage syllabus I've ever seen - consists of "You CAN'T do this and we WON'T tolerate you". Spams announcements. And a mandatory paid subscription can be icing on the cake.
She tells us to buy the course textbook on tophat for $45. Turns out it's not even a proper textbook, just some notes that either she or her ta's wrote up. The whole point of the textbook is so we can answer some multiple choice for completion marks. Lectures are okay if they're online and you can watch on x2 speed.
Safieh is a nice person, but not a good prof. Her lectures are not organized, and she cannot explain concepts clearly. She responds to email very slowly, or sometimes doesn't respond at all.
Professor Moghaddam is one of the best professors I've ever had. She is very caring and makes sure we understood the concepts. She is also very nice when you visit her to ask questions. By far, my favorite professor.
She is pretty awesome but lots of homework.
Class itself was interesting & straightforward, got a decent grade without lectures. But I'd never take a class with her again. MULTIPLE announcements throughout the semester condemning all of us for the actions of "very few of us", unprofessional, passive-aggressive, takes forever to respond to emails. The worst attitude I've ever seen in a prof
So far so good. She seems nice and understanding from I see. The course is organized and she is available when we contact her. very Stern but sympathetic too.
I took her class thinking it was a bird, it was not. the examples she uses in lectures are very simple but in the assignments, the questions are way harder. It was online for me because of the pandemic and if u didn' understand something you had to teach yourself because she doesn't answer emails.
Prof Safieh is one the best professors I've had. She is very caring and teaches the concepts in a simply way. I really enjoyed her class. She also responded to my emails quickly.
I am a linguistic student and I can tell Safieh is way better than other ling profs. Even though sometimes she may not be able to reply to your email which will make you really anxious especially when you need help, so talk to her in the office hour! However, if you have any questions about your marks she is willing to look over your Hw again!
paying so much money for an online class that was pre-recorded in 2016? wow. the assignment feedback is vague, and there are constantly marking errors in both quizzes and assignments. it's an easy class if you know the basics of english but it's annoying how little effort she puts into this class despite having classes pre-recorded
Professor Moghaddam is one of the best professors I have ever had at UofT. She is very nice and understanding. She may come across as a bit too strict but is always willing to help us. My only complaint is group work activities. I like to work by myself.
Prof Safi is a sweet lady. She replied to my emails on time and spent extra time to meet with me. Very nice. Some assignments are challenging too.
Safieh is a very bright professor and has a unique teaching style. She cares for the class and makes sure we are on right track. She always replies to me quickly.
Too emotional & does things based on her emotions. She is incredibly nice, helpful & humorous when shes in a good mood but otherwise can be snappy/borderline rude. Slightly disorganized but still understandable. She does not welcome questions during break/after lecture- go to her office hours for that. Good luck in getting a reply to emails.
She is a really good professor. She cares for her students and takes her job seriously. I liked her video lectures. They are organized and informative and at times funny when she makes jokes. I am looking forward to taking another course with her this fall.
She is my best prof so far!
Professor Moghadam is a very nice caring lady. She is one of the most passionate professors I have ever had at university. I like her free style teaching too. The learning environment made me feel included all the time. Loved it!
She makes my heart smile. Taking away her love, the course becomes a tomb. I think of her every step of the way. Wherever her go, whatever her do, I will be right here waiting for her lectures. Every day without her is like a book without pages. I love you, don''t take this heaven from me.
Professor Safieh is one of the best professors at the university. She is very inspiring and is always taking the extra mile to make sure we are learning in her course. She is a nice person with a caring personality. She really helped me this semester to catch up with my lessons. I will take more courses with her.
I am taking a course with this professor for the second time. She has been consistent in her teaching way which is very unique. I adore her. At first, I was intermediated but when I attended her office hours, I figured she was a kind person. Her assignments are a little hard but she was willing to clarify the questions. She is lovely.
Gives lots of practice homework which is both amazing and sucks. Really friendly and super interested and passionate about the topic and it clearly shows in her lectures. Can be confusing sometimes just lots of times to get clarification. If you don't practice and do the work tho, it's really hard
One of the bests if not the best processor I have ever come across with. She made the whole semester feasible and interesting. A type of professor who's willing to go extra mile to best cater the needs of the students. periodttt!
I took this class for an English credit. I am definitely not interested in linguistics at all. However, I can tell that she really cares about us and she is kinda funny too. And she is also fine at teaching the topics.
Prof Safieh is a very genuine passionate person. I love her sense of humour especially when she calls us out for not being attentive. I appreciated her lecture videos this past semester. The course was very organized and her assistants were responsive to my emails.
Moghaddam is amazing, she gives a clear schedule at the beginning of the sem and accommodates for all holidays. I'm a STEM student and I took this course (and A01) to lighten my course load. They were both easy but I actually found A02 easier. Make sure you put time into the assignments, they're 7% each and they tend to drop people's grade.
If you see the name of this professor on any class, take it. Even if its a class you hate. This professor is legit the best prof, individual, etc you will ever come across. Such a caring person with gifted lecturing skills. Had her for over a year + got depressed after semester is over. Took a minor in LIN because of her and her gifted prof skills.
prof Moghaddam is perfect, she is hands down the only teacher/professor that I have ever come across who teaches material so well that you enjoy it and you do not stress out about it. Works too hard and overtime for her students, it is truly a privilege to be in her class. Miss you lots!!
Great professor, easy homework and exams. Highly recommended!
Professor Moghaddam is one of the best professor for our online course. She is very passionate about teaching and makes sure that her students are taken care of. She is kind and understanding when you need help. Loved her course.
For a lack of a better word, she is amazing. Her course is very organized and she is a very friendly professor.
The BEST professor. Very organized, actually keeps us updated on whats happening with marks/grading/course content. I can actually understand her lectures, something i had a hard time doing with other prof/teachers lectures. 10000000% recommend
She is literally the best prof ever, taking this class was such an easy A especially since all the quizzes and exams were open book. But other than that, the professor is actually really nice and cares for her students. She gave us so many extensions and extra marks. Best professor out there.
This prof is absolutely amazing. Her lectures are so organized and well explained. I enjoyed watching her lectures because she is so engaging. She is a gem and profs at UofT need to take notes! I recommend this course!! Lots of practice questions available. Lots of concepts and rules but she explains them so well. Do the work and you'll get a 4.0.
SHE IS SO FRUSTRATING! the material itself is not hard just do the readings, watch lectures, weekly assignments & quizzes. BUT SHE IS SO DISORGANISED & RUDE! She always posts stuff late or even the ANSWERS ARE WRONG on TESTS or QUIZZES and she won't correct them unless you email her. I took her for many courses but she is very vexing
SHE IS SO FRUSTRATING! SHE IS SO DISORGANISED & RUDE! She always posts stuff late or even the ANSWERS ARE WRONG on TESTS or QUIZZES and she won't correct them unless you email her. I took her for many courses but she is very vexing but just do the material and you will pass.
Safieh is disorganised, rude, self absorbed and doesn't respond to student emails. Posts tests and quizzes LAST MINUTE & expect us to do it on the weekend. If you try to join a LIVE with her during EXAMS she is busy with students KISSING HER ASS so you cant even ask course material help. honestly TAS like BRUNO & GABRIELLE teach BETTER than her
the people who took this and did not do well only have themselves to blame. As long as you did the assignments and followed the lectures, you were golden. Mainly b/c she basically gave out free marks (majority of the assignments were for completion). Quizzes/exams were more than fair. Shes also so nice and accommodating-dont take advantage its rude
This course is probably the most easiest course I've taken. the prof is very nice and very accommodating of students. The exams and quizzes were really easy. as long as you stay on top and watch the lectures and do the practice, you can get an A.
Never responds to any emails. Do not take a class with her if you value feedback and learning
She is "amazing". I sent her email 3+ times, and I have not got a single reply yet. I accidently missed the deadline for my third assignment because the deadline was 11:59 am (while other two were due 11:59 pm!). I kindly asked her if she would accept my late assignment. In the next day, she made an announcement complaining how rude students were??
Amazing prof who actually cares about students and their mental health. Explains concepts very clearly and does not mind re explaining . Gives so many chances to boost your grade. One of the best profs at UTSC
Professor Moghaddam is one of my favourite professors at UTSC. Whenever I went to her office hours, she was very patient in explaining and discussing the questions and showed her greatest support. Her quizzes and the final exam are very fair. If you work hard, this course is an easy A.
Very passionate and caring professor with very clear lectures and tons of opportunities for extra marks
Very kind professor. Never attended any of her optional lectures but her recorded ones were nice. Likes to joke which livens up the slightly long lectures. Content is extremely easy as well as assignments. Quizzes can be a little bit tricky with their wording but overall fine as long as you study
Shes a sweetheart. Be careful on the quizzes, but if you study, this class will be a breeze. Dont think because its classified as a bird course that itll be an easy A. You have to work for it! Cant wait to be in her class for LINA02!!
The Best Professor..!!!! Amazing lectures and really helpful. The course is well structured and even organises review sessions for each of the topics. Super friendly and kind.
She is very unorganized and loves to talk about her personal life during lectures. Homework itself is not difficult at all but is very hard to understand. It confused the whole group chat, and we had to figure out what she was asking us to do. The course itself is easy. It is just the professor making everything difficult.
GOOD PROF!!!
Great prof, Took LINA01, and she made everything nice and clear for us!
I have taken a few courses with Safieh. LINB18 is the first course that I took with her. She's the most amazing & caring Professor I've met. Some people claim that she does not reply to emails when they have issues with deadlines and other stuff. However, you can always just go to her office hour and ask. She's always very considerate and helpful.
LINA01 is the second course I took with Safieh. I am not even in Linguistics but I just love the way she teaches and the way she organizes a course. Her tests, quizzes, and assignments are very fair. You'll be fine as long as you attend lectures and tutorials. There are even TAs available for extra help in this course.
LINA02 is a very interesting course with Safieh. You get to apply concepts you learnt from LINA01 to this course. Again, there are TAs for extra help in this course.
Tbh Syntax I is by far the hardest B level course I've taken with Safieh. The materials get a bit tricky when we get to movements in X bar theory. However, Safieh made the concept and drawing tree method to be as easy as possible. She even held exam reviews for us and practice LOTS of drawing trees with us. She didn't kill us on the exam as well :)
LINB10 is a fun and interesting course. It's easier than Syntax I in my opinion. But I feel like Safieh's course is never truly hard because she will always help you to understand everything if you have trouble and attend her office hours. She always stops and asks if anything is unclear whenever she finished explaining a concept during lecture.
Loved this class! It was asynchronous but each of the lectures were really interesting and the class boosted my grade!
Very accommodating, friendly, and understanding. Always willing to help. Sometimes slow to respond to emails but she is very helpful once she does
In 2019, I still recall her in my fourth year for her passion as a linguistics lecturer. I attended online, but still found the materials very stimulating and easily comprehensive. Using the Top Hat for readings definitely was rewarding as it asks a few questions to solidify the reading contents that helped me in 200-300/B-C linguistics courses.
Doesn't answer emails. The last assignment for the summer was based on something she didn't even cover in lectures. The TA drop-in office hours were more helpful than lectures.
Best prof in UTSC!! If you are not satisfied with the grade of your assignment or missed any practice exercises, just email her!!
Lectures are always loaded with content, and talks slow so it is perfect to watch at 2x speed. All assignments and quizzes and even the final exam were easy if all lectures are watched. Very easy course overall. I personally have never contacted her so I am not sure of the wait time for her email, but she seemed nice during office hour
Safieh is kind; ask for extra help or accommodations. Make sure to read the textbook, many questions refer only to textbook content. Frustratingly, quizzes, exams, etc., are much harder than the practice material given because she does not sufficiently explain how to answer questions. This leaves students guessing for the right answer.
good professor, but exams are hard and tricky as she puts 6-7 options in multiple choice quizzes and exams. be prepared for that.
Tested on examples of other languages. Not much to study, the course just focused on skill developing. Group work was assigned for a paper and presentation.
A legend tbh. In all seriousness though, the content was really light-headed and easy and office hours/TAs were really helpful. Doing biweekly homework from Top Hat was really beneficial because it got me to understand the concepts a bit better. The final exam was also easy and got straight to the point
the work is really easy, but she's very egotistical and WILL call you out if she feels disrespected in any way. she calls people out in the middle of class and tells people to sit down if they try to leave. take this class if you're willing to look over her ego and you need a bird course to fill your credits.
I have seen a few comments about the prof being rude for calling people out for not paying attention but completely disagree, she spends a bunch of time sharing as many resources to help students, she wants people in her lec to learn and teaches very well. I wish more profs were comfortable being like her, calling out students who fool around.
despite what some people are saying on here, she CAN be lenient with due dates, and you can tell she cares for the students and their success in the course. lots of weekly practice questions but they're mostly for completion marks. not many tests, just quizzes and assignments. her lectures are very easy to follow and she is very personable!!
Just watch lectures and it will be very easy...
Really good professor
Im in LINB18 right now and im so so upset. The assessments were okay but the final was so brutal. I took this course to learn and I feel like I was slaughered in the exam and because Im applying to grad school, It sucks that my willingness to learn linguistics destroyed my chances since the final is 45% of final mark. Sweet professor though.
I took a number of courses with Prof. Moghaddam and always had a great learning experience. The lectures were always engaging and easy to digest, and it was through Safieh's classes that I became interested in pursuing a linguistics MA. She is very friendly, and approachable, and if you get to know her, can make your undergrad experience top-notch.
Course itself is fair and relatively easy to perform well in. Professor receives a bad rating due to their choice of forcing students to use an external service Top Hat to use a textbook and receive grades, charging overpriced fees and refusing the option for students to borrow or loan out books. Professor performs predatory behavior for kickbacks.
She really wants students to succeed in her class and cares about giving us extra support if needed
Honestly, she's nice at the beginning, and to be fair she really is when it comes to being a professor as she gives you a fair shot when it comes to getting a great grade. But, throughout the lectures, her attitude seems to be very passive ngl, and I lowkey get that, but the tone of her voice needs to be checked cause sometimes its not that deep.
The professor is pretty wonderful. Although her lecture pace is very slow, she still explains everything very well. If you attend every lecture and read every slides she gives, u will do a very good job in midterm and final.
The professor is sweet and will provide resources to help you understand the material, but it feels as if the TAs don't know what they're doing. They all mark very arbitrarily and don't give you partial marks either. The exam pulverized a lot of us, it made no sense, especially the data sets in other languages. The prof is really nice tho.
tough
-3/10. Would not recommend.
There is no midterm exam for this course, and some group assignments
horrible. 1/10.
literally so annoying. she yaps for the whole class and does not explain anything correctly. lectures are useless. she also gets wayyyy too sensitive about ppl using their phones lol.
11% of the grade was for Top Hat which per course costs around $80. The info there was regurgitated in lecture and I did fine without ever reading through it, it taught me nothing and was a lot of money down the drain. I also felt she was very easily offended by a lot of things and would overreact and make the atmosphere tense. She's funny though.
Never finish the lecture.
She is friendly and would answer all questions that you have.
Prof was unprofessional and was no help whatsoever
Professor Safieh is an AMAZING leader to help students perceive the complex twists of linguistics. She takes the time and care to make sure any student that is truly interested in understanding the concepts of the English language gets the best value for the time dedicated. I would definitely take this class once again!
She is really kind and patient. Clearly explains lectures and always gives feedback. Gives extensions on homeworks. please take her, she is the best!
Gets overhwelmed by questions and screams your name so loud when answering questions and that is not nice.
egotistical
Overall, she was a great professor online, and explained things over and over until we understood, she's nice caring and respectful. Would take again.
was accelerated, a lot of homework and other graded material, spent most my time on it. also, mandatory online textbook for 80 bucks overall easy class
This course is a bird course. Really kind and patient professor. Clearly explains lectures and is very approachable when having questions. Most grades were from participation which helped as a grade booster. If you attend lectures the final should be easy!
great professor, she is very nice to students and careing about them!
If all my professors had been like Professor Moghaddam, I would have seriously achieved exceptional academic success..too bad I found her so late in life.
love her~
She explains all the concepts clearly and goes over a lot of examples till everyone is comfortable with it.
tbh she wasnt that bad but i found the class boring after a while and not very engaging/hard to wanna stay and pay attention
For the sake of your livelihood, DO NOT take this class. Not only did we have to purchase a whole $80 online module worth 10% of the grade, it was no help at all. Professor isn't bad, but the TA marking is atrocious. If you decide to still take this class take advantage of the re-grade requests.
Recommanded!
The professor is very nice and wants you to succeed. Class is structured very well. No essay, No Midterm. Think of this class as an investment towards your gpa, the $80 textbook is worth it.
She's the best.
I learner entirely off her lectures and did not open the textbook, so I would say her lectures matter for exams and midterms more than the textbook. She will 100% help you understand a concept if you just ask. Lets you ask questions during and after lectures. Great prof.
Great Prof. If you have an option between her or any other prof for linguistics, PICK HER.
professor was always mad for no reason, acted like she did not care about the class.
Best professor I've had in 18 years! Professional, supportive, and respectful. She encourages students by name, offers calm exam guidance, and ensures affordable materials. Truly invested in student success.
If I can give her 6/5 I would. She's actually one of the best professors here at Utsc. She's so sweet, caring and kind. Her courses are also fun and fair :)
The professor is great, but the TA's mark way too hard on assignments. I don't see this as a bird course because it is very heavy on random memorization that you won't need later on in life. Safieh cared about the students and gave extra review lectures but still, the course felt rushed in some aspects.
I found this class pretty easy overall, just practice often and you'll get the hang of it. A bit boring overtime but the lectures were usually very helpful.
Professor is friendly and patient, breaking down concepts well. While the workload can be heavy, the class is manageable with attendance and using study tools like unstuck ai. The final is straightforward if you keep up with the material.
Shes a VERY nice person. Personally couldnt bare going to lectures as they were really slow paced imo. The TA's really need to standardize, some would bless you and some were really strict on small things. Fair amount of free marks. Just do some practice here and there and you should be set. textbook was pre expensive.
She's a very great teacher and explains extremely well. Course was overall easy, not too hard on the memorization if you come up with an easy way rather than focusing on the sounds for example. Only issue if her response time, very poor.
Amazing professor that will do anything to ensure her students succeed. Lecture heavy in a way that lectures are very helpful to understanding the material. Some memorization required, might not be as easy for people who has trouble with English but definitely manageable with effort. A great course to get started into Linguistics.
Super sweet prof and she's very well loved, only problem is with the amount of hw and how heavy lectures are. Attendance is mandatory, you'll miss important parts if you don't show up, you also have to pay like $75 for the Top Hat textbook. NOT a bird course. Be prepared for the workload, great prof and super attentive otherwise
One of the most amazing professors I've ever got to learn from! The way she teaches is amazing and easy to understand. LINA02 (and 01) was so interesting and if you like the topic of linguistics, I highly recommend her LINA02 (and 01) courses.
Do not take her course, do not.
Horrible course. Prof lacks knowledge of content and assignments, always redirects to TAs via email, killing live Q&A. Unhelpful and dismissive. Teaches at PhD level despite being an elective. Overpriced textbook doesn't align with lectures at all.
The lectures were 2 hours long and can get boring with only one 5 minute break which she talks during... Getting in contact with her is not easy since she redirects everyone's questions to the TA and does not even know what is going on in her own course if you ask about quizzes, assignments, etc. She made it loud for students to not contact her.
It was an enjoyable course! The lectures were fine and engaging. A lot of the content was a repeat from LINA02 so that definitely made it better. There is a midterm which was really fair (no final though!). Safieh is also really sweet :)
If you need to take LINB06, definitely take it with Safieh. She is really educated in what she teaches. Even though the content is heavy and difficult she does try to provide the most amount of help she can (review sessions, practice, office hours). The assignments were fair in my opinion. You just need to stay on top of the course to do well ofc!
Took her class online asynch in 2023. Although her lectures were long, they were organized, and her explanations were very clear! She also went through lots of practice questions in class. Assignments were easy. I barely put any time into the class and ended with a 4.0.
thinking abt how she mistook me for some other guy in the class... twice... shes cutie tho love her
Are you taking this class for an elective bird course? Yes --> Are you willing to put a decent chunk of time into this class --> Yes --> Take it `--> No --> Look for another elective No -> Rip Very heavy material but ez to understand.50-50
Although I'm not a fan of linguistics, Safieh is very passionate about this course, and I see that in her lectures. She is a decent lecturer and transparent with her students. This is not a bird course though in the sense that you will get a 4.0 without trying. If you put in the work, you will most likely get the 4.0, but there is a lot of reading.
Prof is amazing!!! She's really passionate in what she teaches and explains concepts extremely well. She likes to repeat previous content from past lectures which may make the course seem slow-paced but personally I found it to be extremely helpful. Alot of homework, but very useful and easy to do once you got the main concepts down.
never really watched the lectures but she seems nice and enthusiastic. course is literally so free if you just learn the material. no midterm or quizzes at all!!! even though the final is worth 45% she literally went through what topic each question was gonna be about. only bad thing i can think of was a little nitpicky marking and need$70 textbook
