He was far and away the worst professor I have ever encountered. He had no command of the English language and was unwilling to assist his students. He should never have been hired and should be fired immediately.
Yeah his English needs some work but it's far from incomprehensible. If you do the homework and study for the tests, it's an east A. Tip: If you don't know an answer on the test, write wasn't here for that lesson. He'll give you credit anyways.
You will not learn anything in his class, everything I gained from this course was self-taught. Do not take unless you wish to spend an unnecessary amount of time learning for yourself.
he goes over things multiple times, if you want to do well you'll be great
he lost me after the first week of classes... he is incoherent and does all the talking in class. i have no idea how people are getting decent grades in his class
very hard very har
Nice teacher. If you study and do homeworks you should have no problems.
class was very boring and took studying but for the amount of work i put in i got a B and he was an easy grader
he could be very vague sometimes, and i'm not a good math student, but i took calc from him and got a B+ in the course. take a class with him.
Took this class w/ him in the summer. I particpated all the time, went to extra help BUT he gave me a C-. Which I think is bs considering it is the summer. Not very clear, assigned HW that he didn't know how to do. Would not recommend at all.
as long as u do the homework and dont sleep in class, you will be fine. also it helps ALOT if you see him during office hours now and then. he is very nice and if you have any questions he will go over it. for fun, he repeats outfits....alot :)
overall he's a good prof. teaches in steps which is easy to follow. as long as you go to the class right before a test-you'll be fine.
I wish I had known about this site before I took his class. I was used to having GREAT math teachers all through high school. This was a wake up. He is so boring and I did not learn 1 thing. I was shocked to get a D, I thought I would have gotten an F.
He is a very nice guy. He hands out sheets with notes on them, that are extremely helpful. If you pay attention and do your homework, you will have no trouble
If you are good at math and want to get out of the course quickly without ever going this is the best teacher. He is very incoherent, however I took the course in high school and went to class only for the test and I still recieved an A.
One of the most boring classes i have ever taken.yet he goes over all the material pretty clearly, sort of hard to understand. but as long as you do the homeworks and review them, you'll do fine in the class.
i absolutly hated this guy for math, i have a hard time with math to begin with and if you are someone like me with that problem and you cant understand an accent them dont take this teacher!
He is a nice guy, easy grader. Make sure you don't miss too many classes. Turn in all homework, it will help your grade in the end. Take good notes, DON'T NEED TO BUY THE BOOK! The exams are directly from the notes and the sheets he hands out in class
veryyy easy professor, show up to class...pay attention even though sometimes unclear with his accent and you'll do well..3 tests, homework but doesnt check or collect it. if you pay attention you get at least a B+
Easy Professor, Very Nice. Attendanc is a joke! If you have knowledge of the subject you will be fine. Test are easy, and he is just funny to listen too.
I am horrible at Math but he made it so easy that I breezed through his class. He never gets tired of explaining things and he gives lots of examples. It's easy to get an A in this class and the professor is very nice.
he is a very good math teacher. he's so funny to listen to , but you can understand him. he explains things as much as you need him to. he is such a nice guy and he makes funny jokes..take him
The course itself is not that hard. Sometimes he can be confusing when explaining topics that you need to clarify. He can't really explain things well but he gives enough examples for you to grasp the idea. Do all the assigned homework even though he doesn't check it and you'll do ok.
i love akbik, he was a funny professor who taught math well. He had funny jokes and was a silly guy....take him
Great help, explains things multiple of times until you understand. He is fair, nice, and pleasant professor. I would recommend him to every student.
easiest teacher ever...class is a joke..
Great professor. He is good help during office hours.
The course had some difficult material but he went through it in a structured and well paced way. Everything was relevant to exams and the homeworks helped build a strong knowledge of the topics covered. Would highly recommend and if you put the effort in, the class is rewarding. Attendence wasn't taken but if you don't turn up you will struggle
I took this course during the summer but I also took Calc BC in high school, but overall the course was pretty easy. Even though it moves fast you dont forget anything and the professor is very clear about the HW and exams. There are no surprises and most questions from the exam are very similar to problems in the book.
Hes allll over the place. Extremely disorganized. Makes soo many mistakes. Does not know how to explain something. Hes a easy grader. Hes a good human but a terrible professor. Get ready to rely on the book and teach yourself everything.
Did horrible on the first test and then strangely well on the next two, bombed the final and somehow ended up with an A. Sick close to the front and let him get to know you. If he sees that you're trying and knows who you are, he'll definitely be a lot more lenient. Attendance and participation are a must!!
He has an accent but is very comprehensible. Some don't like him but I think he is a decent teacher and tries to keep the class interested and laughing. Attendance & homework isn't mandatory but if you want to do well I highly recommend it. We even persuaded him to let us use notes on first test. Overall and easy class.
Although he is a very nice professor and does everything he can to make the class easy, he is just bad at math. He makes frequent arithmetic mistakes and usually doesn't notice them. Tests are easy, sometimes tedious, homework isn't mandatory but is good review. Overall easy class but can be frustrating correcting him almost every class.
His english can use work but u can still understand wat he's saying. Hes also very nice snd pretty funny as well as extremely beyond extremely helpful wen u need help. I would HIGHLY recommend him
he takes the hw questions and puts it on the test. if you pay attention in his class and do the hw u will get in A. its an easy class to take and easy homework. he goes over the hw everytime as review. i would take him although he does write wrong answers on the board and make sure he doesnt mark something wrong when its right on your test.
I love Professor Akbik, knows his material very well, yet fair and nice teacher. Questions on the tests are generally easier than the ones on the tests. I would highly recommend him.
He's a sweet guy, but he has absolutely no business teaching Math. He tries to be funny about it, but when he's wrong on the board he says, "It's because I already know the answer." I've gotten arbitrary points taken off tests, to which I had to I earned the points. I'm never taken this professor again, but he was nice.
I took the same course with the professor; he taught a very rigorous course that prepared us well for Cal III. I would definitely take a second course with him.
Nice guy, rarely gets mad. Boring class but not hard. HIS TEACHING SKILLS AREN'T GOOD because he doesn't articulate and messes up on class problems, tests, review sheets. Double check him. Doesn't even check HW. Takes attendance if he remembers. I had to teach myself the information via textbook because his class wasn't cutting it. Boring but easy!
You have to be on the ball with this professor. He gives out handouts and the textbook is a great reference to reinforce the lessons. However, this professor is hard to understand at times. Also, makes sure you go over your quizzes, midterm and final with him: he misses giving you points for your exams. He can be arrogant at times so be prepared.
The class really isn't that hard and going to the math tutoring center helped because Akbik is a really hard prof to get used to and he doesn't seem quite with it. If you pay attention and study for quiz's and tests it is not very hard to do well but the class is very boring and sometimes frustrating
I am not good at math but I did well in Math Excursions, the professor made it easy and enjoyable. He reviews for tests and final. The class could be boring at a time due to the natural of the subject, but the professor tried hard to make it accessible to students.
I passed the basic algebra course with Prof. Akbik, he was clear and fair, no complaints.
He's a really nice guy. If you did poorly on homework, he lets you redo it for a better grade. He let us use a cheat sheet for the final. He wants you to succeed. I did have to teach myself the material, I didn't find his lectures useful. They were sort of a waste of time. I gained understanding from teaching myself out of the book
For starters this class is pass/fail. You could get a 60 & still pass the course. The material is simplistic. Literally high school math. This professor is real monotone, and the lectures are mad dull, but you have to look past that and pay attention. The book is confusing and won't help. He collects the homework on a whim.
He didn't curve at all, the kept saying that the class average was in the 80s but most people were getting below 75 on the tests. Makes mistakes on his test answer keys and give no chance for extra credit or extra work. Would not take again, made my gpa drop. Don't take him for any 100 level math course.
Professor Akbik is a great professor. He tries to make the classes as interesting as possible and drops two of the lowest homework grades, the lowest quiz grade, and the lowest test grade. Overall, he's a great teacher.
He's pretty clear and usually helpful with questions. Super easy class, just kind of a lot of homework
Akbik is by far one of the worst professors I've had at Hofstra. He doesn't curve or drop any test grades, he makes a lot of mistakes on the board that you have to look out for, and he says the class average is a B- when people are actually failing his tests, which are very long. Get ready to teach yourself, going to his lectures are useless.
This homework and quizzes were online, but he gave lectures for class. He gave constructive feedback, and stopped to make sure that every one understood. Really cared about everyone doing well.
Professor Akbik taught a great differential equations class. The class was not easy but problems on the exams are similar to those on the webassign or the ones done in class. questions on the final are mostly take from the tests. I got 100% on the webassign which is 30% of the great and that helped my great.
Class itself was extremely boring. All homework and quizzes are online and tests are taken in class on the computer. Basically this is kind of like taking an online course since the online textbook teaches you everything you need. I ended up not really paying attention in class and just using the textbook and working hard on the homework instead.
This was an easy online pass/fail course but with many assignments. However, the system has many help choices that will teach you the material and help you with your homework. The professor was very responsive to may emails.
took the course online over the summer, biggest mistake, professor was extremely hard to reach, i could send an email during office hours and not get an answer for 2 days. it was too much work to do online and since its online there isn't really partial credit, you can do all the math work correct, round incorrectly and get the whole question worng
by far the rudest professor I have ever had at hofstra, if you want help or extra time due to an emergency, just expect him to ignore your e-mails because in all honesty he couldn't care less, and he couldn't care less about his job or students//avoid at all costs especially online he's not helpful and downright rude to students
This guy is a very terrible teacher. I would not recommend him for anyone. Especially if you already know math is your shaky ground.
Professor Akbik is very quiet and hard to hear in the large classroom, but ironically you don't need to hear him at all since most classes he reads right out of the textbook. I used my class time to do homework, take quizzes, and prep for tests since all the work and the textbook are online. I'd advise anyone to do the same.
Professor Akbik is a fair and nice professor he gives you a second chance if you miss a homework or a quiz. The material is not so familiar to students but he explains it again and again also the textbook and power points all come with access code you buy. I recommend him if you are willing to do all online assignments.
Professor Akbik is a good teacher. He is a little hard to understand and gives a lot of homework.
learned alot from this online course and the professor was very flexible.
worst online professor ever extremely rude and thinks he is always correct and you are always wrong. scheduled an in-class final for an online class which I could not attend so I had to go out and buy a webcam just to take the final also stated that you need a 55 on the final to pass the class so I guess HW means nothing
complete the assigned homework by the due date and you will pass. one midterm online and one final that you have to come in for. Pass/Fail only
I am not great in math but this course helped me & offered a lot tools to help. The professor is great & if you have to take a math class you should take him! Well, really even if you don't have to you should!
The professor is such nice man but his teaching abilities really disgruntled the class. His tests were extremely difficult and his lectures were very confusing at times. Despite this, he would extend deadlines on homework, give us more time on tests, and would understand where we were coming from. There are three exams, a final, and online hwk.
He is a nice professor and tests were reasonable, do the online homework and study his test reviews and you'll do good. He allowed a cheat index card on the final.
He is a fantastic professor. I just had him for Calc 1, and he really explains everything. His tests are fair, and always has a practice test which is very similar to the real thing. Homework counts as a large portion of your grade. He is very respectable, and a great person. I highly recommend him.
He is a really good professor. I had him for pre-calc at farmingdale state college. Gives out review sheet which is very similar to the actual test. There are 2 exams and the final which is cumulative.
Take Professor Akbik! He is so amazing and outstanding and really helps you understand. I took him for precalc and teaches you everything in detail! Hes so great and he has a slight accent but it is super understandable I promise you ! He gives easy tests and lets you use an index card every one!Theres only 1 hw every week!Take him hes amazing!!!
He is a great professor. His tests are straight forward and similar to the questions he gives on the review.
Did not have any clue how to teach and would say that a certain group of students were very distracting despite everyone else on the other side of the class were talking.
hes a great teacher
Ok so if you listen and practice in professor Akbiks class you will get an A or B. Students who say otherwise didnt put effort and blame the professor lmao. I took him for calculus and he teaches the subject VERY well because he loves math. Hes very easy going and loves to see his students do well. Very pleasant person and excellent professor.
NO PHONES, not even to get pictures of the board. Hope you can type/write fast, that board is getting taken down quick. You'll end up teaching yourself the content. Use the class as note taking time and submit the homework. The Homework costs $100 for access to the Cengage portal. No paper homework. No online feedback. His English needs some work.
He is the WORST professor in the math dept. When he writes on the board he's teaching himself instead of the class (covers board) & if u try to ask a qstn he ignores u or gives attitude. He's so oblivious & just a horrible prof. The exams are just like the practice ones but it's still not enough. pray for a TA bc that's the only way u will pass
Even before the coronavirus, all our homework, tests, and quizzes were online. Having to finish the semester online was difficult enough, but this professor was of no help. There were no live zoom meetings- instead we had to depend only on our online textbook and the videos that came with it. I had to teach myself this entire semester.
Professor Akbik's videos were most useful for me to understand the material. Also, the book's PowerPoint were helpful.
Great professor! Just has a really heavy accent thats sometimes difficult to understand what he says.
Doesn't show face on zoom lectures. Posts a pre-recorded lesson on the website and teaches students that way. Doesn't care about students. Hard to talk to. About 3-5 lectures to watch a week that range from 30min-1.5 hours. Have to buy a third-party website to do the HW. No extra credit, doesn't help his students ever.
Eh he was alright. I never really paid attention in class. I learned everything my self and did well. So Im not sure how good he is. He made us watch ore recorded lectures, he due every Sunday(a lot of hw) 2 exams, chapter quizzes and a final. Ok, if you can learn on your own
Hes mediocre. Hes a nice guy but isnt the best teacher, all of his lessons are pre recorded and he just plays the videos in class. He uses an online program that is $100 where you take all your test quizzes and homework. The tests are hard because they only mark you on your final answer none of your work, just try to keep up with homework.
Literally one of the worst teachers I've had. All we did was watch the videos from the textbook and then get tested. He rarely teachers we just watch another person lecture. The material is hard on its own, we needed someone to teach it but he isn't that person.
it was an online class. he didn't do any zooms, he would post the lectures. i personally did not watch a single lecture and still got an A. i am not good at math at all, so that shows something. at the end of the sem. he drops the lowest test, quiz, and 2 hw grades too.
Getting up for this 8am was the worst thing in the whole world as this professor is very boring and I didn't learn a lot in class. That being said, if you make the time to study a ton and teach yourself you can succeed in this class. There is kind of a lot of homework but it is very beneficial and worth a lot of your grade. Drops lowest quiz and HW
I took this class online. He would post lecture videos where he explained the content and during lecture time he would just do practice problems. He would not allow for questions during this time. But the homework were almost identical to the exams.
Terrible. If you think it's a good idea to wake up for his Calc-1 8am class you are dead wrong. His voice barely even covers the class and everyone tells him about it but nothing changes. He reads off some old powerpoints and gives a load of homework. Be ready to study everything on your own because he does the bare minimum. Just do better Hofstra.
It's like this entire course was online, kids would cheat left and right on every exam. He reads off of a slide and doesn't really teach, but to be fair it really isn't his fault. He tries but its a math course, so its mostly do the homework online and try and boost your grade as much as possible. He wasn't bad it was just up to you to learn.
He is a good professor but he mostly just reads off of slides. Sometimes ends lecture early too. All homework, quizzes, and tests are online which I liked, through mymathlab. The material isn't difficult, if I didnt get anything in lecture, I just learned it through the homework.
Chill professsor and class is pretty easy. Alot of homework and quizzes but they are all online and due at the end of the week. He gave practice exams which mirror the exams. The exams are online but in class. Class gets a bit boring because he just reads of the slides but again its math so what else is there to do.
The whole course is online but lectures in person. He's very sweet but not the best if you want to actual comprehend the material. He's unclear with his teaching & would confuse himself as he goes through his own lectures. If you're fine with completely teaching yourself the work & everything being online, then this is what you're looking for.
Had an 8 am and it was still the easiest class ever. The review assignment is basically the tests and it's all already online anyways. Some of the review questions are his exact questions. If you don't get an A or A-, you def did not care enough, I'm not just saying it.
He is a very nice professor, but the class was pretty mundane, made it hard to pay attention. You also do all of your homework+tests on an online program that you have to pay like $100+ for. Sometimes it was hard to understand him in class but just do the homework and you'll be fine. The exams are pretty much identical to the homework assignments.
Decent teacher, he mostly just taught from the slides but he did explain the slides really well. Both his tests and homework were online (Cengage). The classes went pretty slow and we got to leave early most of the time.
The webassign reviews are literlly the same as the test, he doenst really know how to teach at all and his class gets really boring, I barley came to lecture but hes very nice. Alot of people cheat during the test but your better off studying the review webassigns he gives you.
He takes attendance but it doesn't count. Most ppl were absent most of the time, he teaches directly from the slides, and always ends class early. Hw and exams are online which made everyone cheat. He's a nice professor, but barely replies to emails. Class is boring because it's math but he is a chill professor. Would recommend for an easy A.
Professor Akbik is a very good man. Although attendance is not factored into your grade, you should go. Everything is on Cengage (homework and tests), but cheating does not help anyone. Cheating only cheats yourself. Anywho... I
I love Dr. Akbik, he really loves teaching and understands the Math inside and out. His course is excellent, and his teaching style is very effective. The lectures are so natural and flow really well and just make sense. I highly recommend, you will learn a lot. True mathematician.
Lots of homework but it's all online, exams are on WebAssign during class. Most people don't pay attention but he really is a sweet man who seems to care about what he does. Attendance is taken but not factored into the final grade, but you should still show up to class once and a while.
Honestly, was a chill class. If you get over the fact that it's an 8 AM , it's not that bad. Make sure you understand the homework and the review hw because the test is based on that. Doesn't count attendance and will explain something to you again if you ask a question.
Hes a sweet guy but is very monotone and its easy to fall asleep in class. 2 midterms and 1 final that are online in person with lockdown browsers. He puts like 30-40 questions on each exam with not a lot of time so you can feel very rushed. No partial credit on exams since its under webassign. He also just reads out of a textbook the whole class.
