Awesome.
Very clear lectures, interacts with students, and provides help whenever you need it. Amazing professor.
Absolutely awesome professor. He's tests can be very hard and there's always at least one question on there that's a curveball. However, reviewing your notes and more importantly reading the textbook sections will help.
Great professor! explains things well, but make you keep up with some of the harder topics. Moves kind of fast through topics. willing to help you when need and actually cares about the class. His test can get tricky, but overall good teacher
Honestly an awful professor who makes his tests far more challenging than any other calc I professor at this school. I took AB and BC AP calc in high school, got a 5 on the exam, and decided to not take the credit so I could make sure I really understood calc I before moving on to calc II. Progressively throughout the semester Barone got worse.
Very good professor - helps you learn the course material and provides practice tests. He usually tosses in a few tricky ones so be sure to study enough unlike me.
Dr. Barone is really nice and tries to explain the topics clearly but as others have mentioned, he can get a bit tricky in his tests. Pay attention and get a really good TA and it won't be too bad.
If you have not taken a calculus class before him, I do not suggest taking his class. He assumes that you've already had a strong base with calculus so he skips over fundamental concepts, but if you are struggling he is more than willing to spend extra time with you going over whatever you're struggling with in detail
Very passionate and approachable. Always available to help outside of class. Hilarious. Respects his students.
Really funny and easy to understand. His lectures are pretty helpful. Not that much homework. His tests aren't that hard, as long as you study! Easy to approach after class if you have some questions. Would love to take another class with him!
Sal is a teacher that really cares about his students. He is a reasonable, direct, and easy-to-understand professor that you will learn a lot from. He is not afraid to admit that he is wrong and he takes a lot of what the students have to say into consideration. He is very good at explaining concepts in easy ways.
Very clear in his lectures though he can sometimes get a bit distracted. Obviously interested in his subject in a way and talented at teaching it. Very helpful if you go to his office hours. His quizzes are to test basic comprehension so their pretty easy but exams are harder. Have to work for an A but definitely possible if you put in the effort.
He loves his subject and is very enthusiastic and helpful, but his examples in class can get confusing, contradicts himself. The TA carried us through the class.
Good lecturer, though prone to long tangents. Prompt responses, great one-on-one during office hours. Come to lecture even if it isn't required because it's the best way to determine what will be on the test, even if MyMathLab is sometimes the better teacher. Genuinely likes teaching his subject.
Great teacher, really easy class if you know statistics.
Lectures are kind of tough to keep up with and sometimes he just talks about random stuff. Otherwise he is very approachable and respects the students and their opinions. Tests are pretty straightforward and similar to the study guides.
Sal is really enthusiastic about math and learning but sometimes that prevents him from being a clear teacher. He is really sweet, though, and wants to see everyone succeed.
He truly cares about the students. He wants every single student to fully understand linear algebra, and you can tell by the way he teaches. He tries to simplify the concepts so that you know WHY theorems work, not just what they are. TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE!
Outstanding professor. Hip and relatable. Gives amazing feedback and always answers questions in lecture in a very clear manner. Very very funny guy that clearly knows the subject he is teaching extensively. His superiority as a professor shows in his higher class avgs than the rest of the 1553 classes. Haven't met a student in my lecture unhappy
Sal (thats what he lets his students call him) is a super chill professor who actually cares about making his students do well. His tests are straight forward but they always have a T/F section that can be tricky. Don't worry you can still get an A and not do so well on the T/F. However, Beware of the final exam: it's much harder than the tests.
Sal really enjoys the topic and is more than willing to explain any part of it to anyone who is confused. He's very accessible and is always ready to help. His lectures are really good; I never even opened my book because he did such a good job.
He is very funny and nice. Great professor, makes the material easy. Is passionate about the subject. Take him if you can.
Funny, and overall understands the course conceptually to the point where he should be writing textbooks. But that being said, he enjoys making the tests challenging.
Sal was an AWESOME teacher. He really cared about your learning experience, and doesn't hesitate to go in-depth to answer a question. Definitely take advantage of Piazza, where you can ask him questions any time. He does make sure you actually know the material, though, instead of memorizing it. He's a fair grader, and really invests time into you.
Sal really cares about students, but he's so smart that sometimes his lectures get pretty scattered. He also likes making his tests really difficult so study up a lot. A good TA with Sal will help make his slightly scattered lecture more concise.
Sal is easily one of the best math teachers I've ever had. He's big on making sure his students not only understand the mechanical parts of math, but also the conceptual ideas of linear algebra, which can make the class a bit more difficult if you've always memorized formulas and "plugged and chugged" numbers. Sal is a funny, charismatic nerd.
Sal is funny and enjoyable as a professor. Problem is that he assumes you know somethings ahead of time so you'd better read in your book on whats coming up in lecture. Have to work hard to get an A but you won't get anything less than a B
Sal is a hilarious guy and makes his class very interesting. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. However, his tests are extremely difficult. If you really try and show up to his office hours etc, you will definitely get a B, but an A is hard. Definitely recommend for 1553
Love the guy. Hate the tests. He expects you to always know what you are talking about, and half of the time most people in the lecture have no idea. He's honestly caring, funny, and has some weird cool talents, but the fact that his tests are way harder than his quizzes (which should prepare us for the test) sucks. (I flunked the final).
Easily one of my favorite professors ever. He's incredibly kind and interesting in lecture, and one of the few professors who I can always understand the value of our assigned homework. The tests were not formula heavy, but thought based; however, studying meant I could pass the test easily. T/F are always difficult though. Would take again!
The class was unnecessarilly hard. I like sal a lot, but his lectures were all over the place and made little sense. He taught more to those who understood math at a very advanced level.
Lots of homework but Sal is the best and most fun professor for Linear Algebra. I was with him all the way until the end of the course. Go to lectures, do homework, and attend office hours and you'll be fine.
Super nice and has really interesting hobbies. Writes out some of the steps, which really helps me follow the math
Sal is a super interesting person and a really excellent professor. He has a good sense of humor and doesn't mind being corrected, plus he paces the class based on what students need to work on. Tests are difficult but doable if you put in the work. Great class for Calc II.
Great guy. Tests are harder than the other classes but he's a better teacher, so our grades were actually better than theirs. Go to class, but don't worry about recitation if you don't need the extra practice. Homeworks are due every Monday or Wednesday
Sal is an amazing professor. He keeps even complicated concepts as simple as they can be in order for better understanding. The class is difficult and his exams tend to be harder but if you go to class and put in a little extra effort, you will do just fine. He also tells some pretty good jokes at the end of class sometimes.
Sal is such a great professor. I'm not the best at math, but the way he teaches makes calculus make so much sense. If you go to class and recitation and do the test prep, 1552 is a pretty easy A with him.
He is extremely narcissistic and rude . If you ask him a question that he doesnt deem good enough he will give you a snarky answer. You will get 6-10% off on a test/quiz for petty stuff like not putting dx on a derivative in the middle of your work (not even the final answer). He assumes his students already know calculus. Do NOT take his class.
He definitely knows a lot about the subject, to the point that sometimes he comes across as condescending. However, he is very funny and cares a lot about his students. Very fair tests, what he goes over in class is on them and not anything too hard. Quizzes often and a very average amount of homework. Cool guy for sure.
He's very sassy and he gives really good examples. Moves super fast though.
In the adjustment to Georgia Tech math, it seems that most professors tend to lecture pretty fast. That being said, Dr. Barone is a great teacher who provides clear lectures, entertaining jokes, and good practice resources. Tests are roughly the same difficulty between MATH 1552 classes, but Dr. Barone makes understanding concepts engaging.
He is a really great teacher. Going to lecture is a must, but lectures are good. He wants you to succeed. He also gives you a review guide before every test which are very helpful and accurate to the exams. As long as you are able to do everything on those then you will be successful.
Lectures can move fast-paced at times, but usually he makes sure that his students understand the gist of the lesson before moving on. Don't skip lecture and take organized notes! Homework is on MyLab, due every Tuesday - not bad. The exams can be a little difficult, but they're fair as long as you do ALL the problems in the review packet. Cool guy
Great Teacher. If you do all the review sheets/recitation papers, and review past test/quizzes, the quizzes and tests become much easier.
Sal moves really fast, but very clearly explains all of the content and his expectations of students. I'm not exceptional at calculus, so his course was very difficult for me. His tests are insanely difficult:
I went to sals lectures and skipped my own professors lectures because he was amazing. Very thorough on how to solve problems and checks on the students to see if they are following along. Hilarious guy, love the classroom environment
He has such an outgoing and open personality! Really enjoyed the clarity & environment of his lectures. He really wants to make sure his criteria is fair for his students and is very accessible. Replies fast to email. Great for talking about life too. Make sure to practice out of class but his worksheets/reviews are very reflective of his exams.
Sal is a fantastic lecturer! He made a 150-student lecture hall feel like a 25 person classroom. If you take him, beware of Exam 2. He purposefully makes it tough, but his weighting system makes it feasible to bounce back.
Awesome professor! Really explains the concepts well and shows a lot of example problems. He's also really receptive to the students and even sets aside a review day, basically a class of help desk.
I always looked forward to Barone's class. I write down odd or funny things my professors say and he was easily the most quoted. Once in class he said "Not many professors actually like teaching calculus but I do. I'm a strange beast, though." He had an answer for every question and was happy to answer followup question after class.
Sal is a really great professor! The concepts I did not understand in BC Calc, were made clear to me by Sal. He is a very fair grader, and cares that students learn the material rather than leaving the students to "just figure it out." He can be very blunt at times, but it's all with good intent.
I thoroughly enjoyed Sal's class and very much enjoyed calculus by the end of the semester. His quizzes are fair and reasonable and exams can be difficult. The first exam tends to be the easiest, the second exam tends to be much harder, and the third exam is usually in the middle. Sal really cares about student feedback and is a great professor.
This guy is really cool. He really made me want to learn more about the topics taught in lecture.
Sal is a chill dude, he is great at teaching math concepts. His teaching style and the way he organized the lecture made it really clear for the students. His grading is fair.
Sal is a super nice guy, but that doesn't make his class any easier. He goes so fast during lecture, you end up racing just to get it all written down, leaving you no time to even think about what he's talking about. His test and quizzes are also significantly harder than those of other professors.
Sal is an amazing person and his lectures are a gold mine. He works example after example and explains everything clearly. He can go a little fast, though. 9/10 recommend.
This man is a legend.
AMAZING professor. Yeah, Calc 2 is hard, but Sal teaches it very well. He's straightforward on what he's going to test you on, and makes sure to go in detail of all different types of problems in lecture. He's always willing to help in his office hours as well. Definitely recommend.
Took this course during the summer and Sal was a great teacher but the course itself was difficult. Wouldn't recommend unless you have previous linear algebra knowledge
Overall Sal had entertaining lectures and the tests were not too too bad. I just wish that he would be more specific about what will be on the tests and spend lecture time more efficiently going over problems/tough concepts instead of going off on tangents.
Be prepared for some cringy, albeit hilarious, math jokes on Fridays. Sal gives great lectures and is very up-front about what is needed to do well on exams and quizzes. Wish all my professors had the same enthusiasm and energy.
Sal's an actor and you can find him on IMDb but he plays professor well. His lectures are so much fun and he explains everything so well. Very approachable and willing to discuss with his students. Gives you little homework but ton of practice options if you want extra practice. Definitely take his class.
Sal is a really nice guy and a great professor. You'll have weekly online homework and his participation grade is handwritten homeworks that aren't that bad. This was his first time teaching the class so he was a little confused at the end but he should be good for next semester. However the class and the tests are extremely hard/theoretical.
Sal is one of the best teachers Ive had so far. Especially at the beginning, he really knew his stuff and explained it in a way that made it intuitive for me. He did get a little confused at the end due to teaching it for the first time. Tests are theoretical but every linear algebra class has the same test so you cant avoid that aspect.
Sal is a great guy and an OK lecturer. He goes kind of fast when lecturing. He had taught 1553 before but this was his first time teacher 1554 There is almost always a curve with the final grade. Exams had lots of conceptual questions which require a deep understanding of course content.
Sal's the best. He lectures well, and wants to help you in office hours or after lecture. He's pretty good at explaining things, and honestly is your best choice for Linear.
Sal is bar far my favorite teacher at Georgia Tech. Sit in the front row, stay after class and listen to other student's questions and/or ask questions yourself, and do problems in the book, and you will get an A, almost guaranteed. I studied about 2hrs MWF each day for Linear.
Sal was a great, slightly goofy professor who treated students both like people and like students, instead of just like students. He was very approachable and explained concepts well. However, the course, especially the grades, had no extra credit and was pretty brutal.
Sal gave amazing lectures, many of my friends came from other lectures just to hear his lectures. He is also very understanding of students. If you go to class and do homework you will do just fine. Highly recommend.
Dr. Barone is awesome and made linear algebra bearable for me. For me, this class was extremely difficult so it helped having a great professor. He really cares about his students and does his best to be as accommodating as possible. Friday jokes are also a huge plus.
I didnt realize how bad of a prof he was until I took more classes. He never posted ANY material on canvas, he didnt have any lecture slides. I could barely keep up w/his chicken scratch. Ive never had another prof not provide ANY material on canvas. I went to office hours weekly & he was rude & unhelpful. Ended up teaching other students there
Sal is a great teacher for a difficult course. I took it over short summer so getting through linear in 5 weeks was a feat but I was able to end with an A. The textbook is free and online, it is by far the best textbook I have ever used. Further, when I started doing bad in the class he gave me another textbook for more practice problems to help me
Hands down one of the best professors I have ever had. Everything from his personality to his passion for mathematics make him stand out as a truly great professor. He was very good at explaining the concepts and was always willing to stay after class to answer everybodys questions (or just chat about math). He was awesome and I highly recommend.
Barone clearly can teach this class in person based off of his previous reviews, but he cannot handle teaching online. His lectures are completely useless because he either rushes through everything, barely explaining, or he sits and talks and makes jokes to the chat, causing him to have to rush even further to finish before class ends.
The most caring professor I've had so far. He spends far too much time responding to his student's questions on discord and cares so much about his students. The class was pretty easy and I didn't have to work or study too hard. Love sal so much, please take his class, you won't regret it <3.
Sal cannot teach effectively online. The lectures are mediocre at best and tragic at worst, with Sal seemingly having little preparation for the day's topic, spending far too much time on student questions, and then speeding through important content to make up time. If you like taking notes, forget it. Avoid unless you love reading textbooks.
There were 230 students attending his online lectures. Now he is lucky to get 70. Unprepared for lecture. Says go watch recordings, when he gets lost in his own lectures. Speeds through actual content and focuses on chat. Talks down to students. Lies about not having review material, then publishes them out of spite. Have fun teaching yourself math
He expects a lot but sure doesn't do even the bare minimum when it comes to providing quality lessons and feedback. Ask questions because you're confused only to be greeted with "think about it." I get that but I need some direction bro. Anyway, be prepared to rely on the smart students who are probably more qualified.
Dr. Barone was a great professor! His lectures are fun and engaging and his jokes are great. The exams and quizzes aren't difficult, but are a touch tedious/unfair because of the extreme computation focus of the class. The best part of his class is the Discord server, where he is available for help and review nearly 24/7!
I enjoyed having Dr. Barone as my prof. Chatting in his Discord server with him and other students helps me a lot. I've also personally learned a lot from going to office hours, and I'd recommend going because he spends more time with you and your questions. Tests can be difficult, but there are a lot of resources on Canvas and on his website.
Very arrogant and condescending. When you ask for help, don't expect anything. Horrible lectures, while his exams are extremely tricky. This was the WORST class I have ever taken not cause of the material but simply because of this guy's terrible attitude towards his students.
He's a great professor and a person, accessible outside of class through Discord and Piazza. I felt that the class as a whole was too easy/lenient, but that's probably a GT thing, not a Sal thing.
Not sure I get the recent negative reviews. I thought he was the nicest professor I had this year, and I liked his lectures. The best advice I'd give anyone taking this class: don't wait until the exams to study, bc if you understand concepts, which build on one another, on a regular basis, the class may not be as hard as people make it sound.
Great professor and always willing to help students when they need it.
Horrible attitude towards students; terrible at answering questions; condescending and inconsiderate, just a bad professor overall. Should not even have this job
If he dunked on you on Piazza for asking zero-effort questions and you got mad, he might not be the problem. He seems to polarize people on the basis of "actually tried and are stuck" (they usually like him) and "HELP PLZZ!!!1!!" the night before the exam (see also: "he's so rude and disrespectful!"). Regardless, he's put in tons of time and cares.
If making fun of students is funny, then YES this guy is hilarious. The material covered was very interesting, but the overall effectiveness of this class was low because one could never get any straight answers. Avoid if you can!
He clearly cares greatly for his students and their learning, being super accessible outside of class with many platforms available to reach out from. Exams I felt were fair and he provided sufficient practice material on the main website. Overall, I felt the class was great and pretty well set up.
While it was hard personally to learn in the virtual format, Prof. Barone went above and beyond when it came to being flexible with everyone and his expectations. Tests are weighted on how well you do, and Barone was accessible all the time through office hours, piazza, and even discord. I was always able to get questions answered within minutes.
Sal cannot handle teaching online. His lectures are a complete joke. He just flies through a few examples with little explanation. His Canvas page is completely unorganized. He "cares" about the students but loves giving rude and uncalled for answers to honest questions. Great course if you want to teach yourself with only the online textbook.
Definitely a great professor to have for a rather tough subject in linear algebra. Was very accessible outside of class as he would respond to questions in Discord and Piazza within minutes. Get ready to do a lot of homework and studying if you want to get an A in the class. He was also flexible and understanding of deadlines in the online format.
Prof Barone cares about the class and his students. He's very accessible and is very knowledgeable about linear algebra. I've talked to other students who took linear algebra (both 1553 and 1554), and Barone is the gold standard.
Good lectures, lots of work. Tests are quite hard if you don't have a solid understanding of the concepts AND a good amount of practice. The HW assignments go over material that isn't covered in the lecture yet, so you'll have to prepare beforehand (which can be very painful). Matlab assignments are weighted equally whereas effort required isn't.
He teaches the topics fine, but makes us use BOTH Honorlock and BlueJeans proctoring during exams, creating a logistical nightmare. He also scheduled an assessment right after one of our "break" days. The content itself is fair, but this professor, although heavily knowledgeable about the topic, does not have the student's interests in mind.
I took 1554 with Sal in Fall 2020. He was pretty good. Definitely cared about his students without a doubt, he's super chill too. His lectures weren't the best - I really got through by watching Mayer's lectures. This class is stupid difficult though, don't expect it to be low effort. I think at some points the exams/quizzes were unreasonably hard.
Clear communication, easy to understand (which is very important in a professor). Takes really difficult topics in linear algebra and words them in ways that I can understand. All professors in linear algebra get a bad rep because the content is hard, but Prof Barone deserves a good rep.
the average on every test and quiz has been in the 60s to 70s, take with that what you will
He is the best professor I have ever had at Georgia Tech. He created a discord for his students where he response within 5 minutes every time (also on Piazza) that we even made a meme that he was faster than a cheetah. Because of his quick response, he is usually very honest and can get really angry if you wait until the last minute to ask for help
Prof Barone is a great guy and is incredibly smart. Online classes made challenging a little challenging for him, but many people still did very well. Overall- linear is a tough subject, Barone is a good teacher to have for it.
I took linear in Fall 2020 with Sal and he is still one of my favorite profs so far at Tech. He is very funny and truly cares about his students. Both on Discord and Piazza he responds within minutes with detailed and constructive help. This class is hard and labor intensive, but Sal made it much easier to understand.
Super sarcastic answers on piazza if you ask any logistical questions about the course. He typically responds with "It doesnt matter" "focus on studying". Talks like an arsehole but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt it's due to covid/online format and he isn't like that usually. He is pretty responsive tho, I'll give him that.
Professor Sal is a great and caring professor. He loves Georgia Tech students. This virtual learning made it hard for all. Professor Sal was VERY accessible and has very quick response times on Piazza and Discord. He tries to make the class fun and does care about his students. 1554 isn't easy unless you're a natural mathematician.
He's a great professor. Keep in mind though because of the pandemic Tech was more lenient for transfer students. As this is one of the very first classes that are required incoming into Tech, some transfer students are taking this class and giving the professor a bad rep. Obviously, they aren't used to Georgia Tech rigor and pounding to the dirt.
Took him for Fall 2020, amazing professor. If you like Math, and enjoy logical problems Linear Algebra is great. Professor Barone makes it amazing. Learned everything from his lectures, and had some sick conversations with him on Discord! Take him. Explorations are fun! Linear Algebra is a great class if you are willing to put in the work!
Barone knows Linear Algebra well. However, he communicates his knowledge of it poorly. Hes often sarcastic, cold, and unable to admit to his mistakes. Its hard for me to learn from such persons, but if you dont mind them, take this class!
I took him over the summer and he is one of the most fair professors I have ever had. He gives hard tests, but he works with students to make sure they can handle it and have all the resources to succeed. ILA isn't easy, but Sal makes it fun
Sal's the only professor who seems to be understanding what is happening in linear algebra and seemingly coordinates the entire course by himself. He actually cares about his students by being active on discord and piazza and wants his students to understand the concepts. Tests are a challenge but doable. Thank you Sal!
I took Lin Alg 1553 over the summer iGnITe session. Sal was an excellent teacher, but he tends to ramble and tangent, which was a problem because in the 6 week session class is 3 hours long. Sal was ridiculously accessible, answering discord at 2 am. Good prof, but strongly advise not taking the course over iGnITe.
Sal is a great professor, but the class is really tough in my opinion. Studios are somewhat helpful, and tests are pretty conceptual. Great teacher, just one of the most difficult math classes (to understand) I've taken so far.
Prof. Barone is an interesting professor. He's widely regarded as the best lecturer for 1554, but less personable than what most are used to. Very engaging and a quality teacher, though. Do explorations, study hard for tests, beware of the final, and ASK FOR HELP. PLUS Sessions, studios, office hours, and his Discord are all great resources. GL!
Prof Barone is amazing for 1554 if you pay attention during class and do the work outside of class. Be sure to read ahead so that when he goes over some topics quickly, you can follow along and grow your knowledge. Do the explorations toothey are so useful in knowing the proofs behind the concepts, which are important to fuller understanding.
Probably one of the hardest classes at Georgia Tech for incoming students, and it never slows down. Barone was the only reason this monolith was remotely manageable. Get prepared to spend an hour a day working for your A, as you need to read the textbook chapter to understand the lectures, which are the only way to understand the course material.
Dr. Barone did a great job explaining concepts in lecture, and he is very accessible if you need extra help. Homework is very manageable. Tests are fairly difficult (mostly because of the limited time), but fair. As long as you do the practice tests you should be fine.
Linear is a difficult class by default but Prof Barone really cares about his students and makes the lectures enjoyable. If you can take Linear Algebra from him I would highly recommend! Even though I struggled I always felt that there were options to get help.
Some lectures were helpful. But whenever people asked a question during lecture, he was very condescending.
Barone was an incredible instructor. Very accessible and helpful. Lectures were fast but for good reason, there is a lot of material. The only reason I put difficulty as high is due to the course content. Funny, respectable guy and I would highly recommend his class.
Don't take this class with Barone. He isn't the worst professor but is difficult if not impossible to deal with. Save yourself the pain and find a better way to do it.
Condescending and arrogant. don't take this prof
Both 1554 professors are pretty well-liked, and they are both competent teachers. However, I do not think the tested material is communicated well and the class is very difficult. Our final exam average was around 60 and any adjustment was kept undisclosed. I think the main issue comes around to test design and scoring.
He is great at teaching the material but if you want a good grade in the class you will have to put in A LOT of effort outside the assignments and lecture. The exams are extremely hard and there isn't really a good resource to prepare with. I did hear that a few years ago they made him make his tests harder though so maybe it isn't his fault.
This class is terrible. Barone seems nice but he is actually really arrogant and not approachable. I went to his office hours and all he did was talk down on me. The test are extremely hard, and they get harder every year. The final average was a failing grade. He does not do enough to support his students. He is surface-level nice.
Linear Algebra is a very hard class. Barone is a great lecturer and seems very genuine but when asked questions about exams or quizzes or how to do something, he shuts down and can't comprehend why a student would struggle with a topic. Otherwise, very good and loved my TA.
Barone was better than profs during my semester as overall he was approachable outside of class if you have questions during office hours. His lectures kinda go all over the place sometimes, making me have to watch videos about the content to understand. The final average was a failing grade with no curve which shows the difficulty of the class.
The course Linear Algebra I took in Spring 2022 is a hybrid course, with offline quizzes & online homework. Extra credits are given by completing more assignments & quizzes than required. TAs are nice to help. Exams are really tough for beginners despite of huge extra credits given. So, please take it seriously, or you will definitely get B or C.
Dr Barones tests are hard but fair, they are designed to see if you understand the concepts past sample problems. His office hours are super useful and he is a very entertaining person. His lectures are very useful and is by far the best linear algebra professor
The professor expects you to know exactly what he is teaching as he is teaching it. From my viewpoint, he expects you to know everything. And if you don't you're already 5 steps behind. If you have taken linear algebra before, you should be okay with this professor. But, if not, you will STRUGGLE.
Talks fast/uses a tablet with problem written down while students scramble to write. Memorizes names - doesn't attempt personal connection. Has late-night tests/doesn't give answers to studio practice. Don't rely on old tests, hws, studio, & quizzes to pass. Buy a textbook, resources scattered across different sites. Doesn't respect circumstances.
Professor Barone was a great professor for 1554. This is a difficult class for those just arriving at Tech, and he dulls this difficulty with good lectures and is extremely accessible outside of class. He answers questions on both his discord and piazza in record time. IIRC he also writes the tests so he teaches what needs to be known.
Overall the best professor you can take for 1554. Really accessible and responds to Piazza really fast. The tests are very difficult and you need to go far beyond just using the provided content to understand it. You may have to accept that regardless of how much work you do, you may not get an A in his class, but you will know the content well.
Great lecturer and person in general. Really accessible outside of class; he's very active on Discord and Piazza. As long as you read the textbook, the tests are fairly easy. He gives plenty of partial credit on exams and has a clear grading scheme (grade calculator). Extra credit is also given in homeworks.
Unless you took some form of Linear Algebra in High School or as dual enrollment, take the other RMP reviews with a grain of salt. For the average Tech student this class will be incredibly difficult. Do not over estimate yourself, you will need put forward a lot of time for this class. Unnecessarily difficult.
This course is stupid difficult. Wouldn't recommend taking this course at Georgia Tech unless you like to struggle. Barone is a tough grader, and his lectures are nothing like his exams.
Math 1554 is a hard class and if you gotta take it, would recommend with Barone but it really doesn't matter cause every teacher has the same tests so learn how you can.
A very good professor for linear algebra. His lectures are engaging and helpful, his tests are difficult (but fair), and he's very accessible outside of class for questions. The coursework is certainly challenging, but it's possible to get an A if you really take the time to practice the content outside of class, beyond the homework and quizzes.
Do whatever you can to avoid this class. Take it at a community college for transfer credit. The professor writes false reviews to boost his score on RMP. The class is extremely difficult due to the professor's arrogance and the pressure from the Math Department. If you do take the class limit your schedule to only 12 credits or easy gen-eds.
The lectures are the biggest asset in studying for this course. He records the lectures, and also provides a lot of practice problems and old exams. If you show genuine effort, he will really try to help you. He sometimes is a little callous, but good prof overall.
Professor Barone wasn't even my teacher but I went to his lectures because they were great. Prof Barone is knowledgeable and an effective teacher and funny. Linear Algebra is a really difficult class, but reading the textbook multiple times and going to his lectures made this class survivable
Sal is an amazing professor! The course itself can be tough, but keep in mind the exams are standardized across all lecturers - and as far as lecturers go, Sal is great. He goes fast (which was a refreshing change from high school for me), but he is still thorough, flexible, realistic, available, and captivating.
Very good lecturer, but can sometimes get too good that you will get lost. Linear Algebra is a hard class here, but Barone clearly does his best to help students. Overall great class :)
Great lecturer, but his midterms were very unforgiving in terms of grading. I literally missed 2 parts of a question on a midterm with about 25 such parts and ended up getting a 77 on that test. I might've just gotten unlucky with which parts I missed, but it still stung nonetheless. Hard to get an A, but you'll still learn the material regardless.
Absolute great lectures, but the tests are brutal and unforgiving. Every point matters, which makes the fact that the professors for this class have carefully implemented bs and overly tough questions throughout every exam, making it very difficult to get a good grade. They are class-wide exams so as far as lectures go, Barone is great.
Linear is a hard class, but I think you're in the best hands possible with Barone. I did terribly on all of the exams (my fault, not his) and still managed to not fail. MQE points make up 25% of the grade (free 100) which definitely helps. He knows the "undergrad pitfalls" students are tempted to fall into, and navigates you away from them.
Barone is a great professor; his lectures are super helpful with cementing the topics after reading on them before-hand and the practice exams are a really good reflection of what the actual exams will look like. Super compassionate and does an amazing job guiding his students through "holes" in the course.
Sal is amazing. Great lectures, but beware of skipping class, or you will get lost quickly. By the end of the course, I learned tons. I have never studied as much for a final as this class, but was worth it as I got a 99%, in large part due to the vast amount of resources Sal provides you to succeed. If you put in the work, you will benefit a lot.
My problem with this class is more with the subject itself, not the teacher--Linear needs a degree of inherent intuition and visualization to appreciate/understand the subject, which college courses just kinda ignore. I had to work a ton outside class to develop that. As far as his lectures go, he's pretty good, and his website resources are ace.
Barone is a fantastic teacher and explains concepts very well. Very accessible outside of class (he responds to Piazza questions very quickly). Tests are challenging but fair, and several helpful resources (including past semesters' exams) are provided. Make sure to use these resources and study very hard days prior to exams and you'll be fine.
He's a good teacher, that inculcates the required math skills for the class pretty well, but you will need to work to build actual understanding of the concepts outside class. The supplementary videos/Youtube are great, always helpful. Practice Tests are your best pre-exam resource, and the MML helps for practice. The subject gets easier with time.
I would NEVER take this class in the summer. The grading layout is ridiculous. Classwork/quizzes is worth almost nothing and proctoring requirements for exams are a pain to set up and cost money outside of the school. If they make a mistake grading your quiz "too bad so sad, there are no regrade requests on quizzes." Avg tech stem class.
I took the QUP class online. 95% of the course grade is based on 3 exams + the final, and all exams are in-person (either at a proctoring service at your location or on campus). Needless to say, taking this class online does not necessarily make it easier. This is the first professor ever who's lectures I preferred over Khan Academy. Recommended
One of the best to do it! He is very much aware of what it is like to be a busy student and he created a lot of options for us as far as how to participate in the class. He obviously cares a lot about the class and his students.
I did really poorly on my first exam because of my actual professor, but I lecture-hopped to Sal and my next exam grade increased by 51 points. Lectures are super helpful and he live streams them and posts the recordings if you can't make it to the lectures. Highly recommend taking him or at least watching his lectures if you take this class!
The best part about his lectures is that he records them. This way I can always go over the video if I didn't understand something in his class. I wished more professors would record their lectures. He explains concepts well! He isn't my actual professor but I make sure to go to his lectures when I can and watch his videos for clarification.
Sal was my favorite professor. He is a great guy and explains concepts very clearly. The class was hard and basically you are stuck with the grade you got on your first midterm, but I loved 1554.
Very entertaining lectures but a very unforgiving course, definitely expect to have to make use of tutoring and other services in order to pass.
Sal is the BEST 1554 professor on campus. That being said, this course is EXTREMELY difficult. You will not pass this class without outside help, whether that be a tutor or a great TA. Even if you don't have Barone, go to his lectures anyway. He is the only professor who doesn't ramble gibberish all semester. Course overall is terrible though, gl!
a bit overrated but still the best 1554 professor. he goes fast through some concepts kinda knowing that most of the class might not understand, and expects that the kids who care will seek outside help. but overall with his lectures + supplementary videos on canvas + patrick kims notes on his website + practice exams, you can def get an A.
I don't quite get the hype for him but he's very good. His lectures are great and he provides lots of resources on his website. I do wish that he went over more theory since many exam questions, especially T/F, depend on that understanding. It is a very difficult class so can't depend on him alone, but he is a solid pick for 1554.
Dr. Barone is easily one of the best professors I've had so far. The lectures are engaging and he expalins all the concepts of linear very well. Although the content is challenging, he is always willing to help students master the material. I highly recommend taking his section for 1554.
1554 is the worst course you can take at Tech but Barone tries his best to make the class tolerable. He has zoom lectures that helped a lot. He is always available for office hours. The TAs ABSOLUTELY SUCK! You'll have to put a lot of effort in for this class so be ready. If you can, take the class anywhere else but Tech, it's a GPA dropper.
Linear Algebra is a very hard class, but Dr. Barone truly helps out with understanding the lecture material. He's always readily available after class and through Discord as well. If you are taking his class, make sure you do all the practice tests early. Patrick Kim's Midterm study guides are also very helpful for theory. I also enjoyed his jokes!
1554 is the hardest class I've ever taken. Very time consuming and brutal exams. Barone is the best professor for linear, but overrated.
Objectively a good professor, but very unforgiving when it comes to grades.
Prof is the best option for a very difficult course. USE THE ONLINE STUFF. You are graded by 3 tests and online homework (free 100 worth 25%). You are going to have to do extra work out of class to understand the material. Prof streams and records lectures, watch those. Use past tests, and use Patrick Kim's 'catch all' test study guide. Good Luck.
If you're taking linear at GT aim for this man. He is an amazing lecturer who is always there for his students.
Definitely puts in a lot of effort to his lectures. He is readily available outside of class (definitely go to office hours, even if you don't think you need help), and he publishes a ton of study/review/practice material that helps a lot with exams.
Best linear prof. Engaging prof, good explanations so a bunch of students lecture hop to his lectures. Material reuires good understanding of content so you should know the content and do all practice tests. 3 Midterms only out of 50 points so not a lot of room for error. But if you know your stuff you should be fine.
Didn't even have Barone as my professor but went to his lectures or watched his lecture videos like most people. He was the GOAT.
The GOAT of 1554, did not even have him as my professor but gone to most of his lectures. Explains the content well and the lectures were engaging. Love my man Sal.
I'm gonna keep this short. This dude might be the best professor I'll ever have at Georgia Tech and this is my first year here. I wasn't actually in his section but if it weren't for me deciding to go to his lectures instead I probably wouldn't have gotten an A in the class. The class itself is a lot of work but he makes it a bit better.
Barone is hard to get as your 1554 teacher and for good reason. His lectures are the best! I saw the RMP but the class filled up before I could register for it. Luckily attendance is not mandatory and all 1554 classes have the same exams so I registered for another prof and either watched recorded zoom lectures or sat in an empty seat in person.
Barone is by far the best 1554 professor. He is always available to ask questions and has insane piazza response time. 1554 is by no means an easy class, but Barone makes it manageable and wants you to succeed.
An absolutely amazing professor. By far the clearest and most helpful lectures on linear algebra and gives you a ton of resources to help you succeed. Pay attention and go to studios and you'll do great - his office hours and discord can always give more help
Everybody says they love Barone's lecture style but it didn't work for me personally. He posts videos from the previous coordinator and those seemed to do just fine for me. Make sure you do well on the first test to save yourself later.
Barone is good but he is a bit overrated. IMO, he does a great job at preparing you for questions on exams that require "calculation". But you have to learn by yourself for questions that require critical thinking. He answers questions and gives resources but that's it. He also teaches the course based on his perspective.
Barone is definitely the best of the 1554 lecturers. He answers questions in class and is pretty accessible outside of it. Make sure you keep up on MQE otherwise you will fall majorly behind.
Barone is definitely overhyped as a lecturer. He was fine, but I found his response style to other students over Piazza sort of passive-aggressive which discouraged me from interacting. Lectures are okay, but I would recommend the online content (+ textbook if you're brave) as your source of truth. Be ready for a grind, especially for tests.
I loved his lecture style - he stresses important words which helps out my ADHD brain. Sit in the front of class - it helps a lot even if it's scary in a lecture hall! Exams are very tough so be sure to learn the conceptual relationships between topics. Make sure to get all those bucket points :)
Barone is a solid professor - his lectures are engaging and he provides great resources. Though challenging, the class is manageable with the help of the textbook and Unstuckstudy.
Best of the math professors, passionate about teaching and makes all subjects clear. Has a phenomenal website setup to review any concepts that you may not understand. Able to make tough concepts very understandable.
By far the best lecturer in all MATH 1554 sections. Better of just going to his classes.
Undoubtedly, the best MATH 1554 teacher you could take. - Amazing and clear lectures (all of them are recorded, so you don't have to actually go to class) - Always active on Discord and Piazza - Tests are fairly straightforward (just do all of the past year midterms for practice) - Very approachable teacher and posts his notes/practice/textbook
Sal is an amazing professor! I didn't even have him yet; I still only went to his lectures and watched the videos he posted online. For MATH 1554, I'd recommend that you watch Sal's uploaded lectures no matter what teacher you have. Don't go to your own teachers lectures. He uploads them after each class, and he explains all the concepts so well!!
Definitely the best Linear Algebra professor at GT, you don't need to be in his section just go and show up to his lectures. Teaches clearly and is open to any questions from students (a lot of students stay after class to ask him stuff and he willingly stays too). All 1554 sections take the same exams, but Barone is definitely the best lecturer.
I took this course in Spring 2023. You need to understand that 1554 will be a challenging course with any professor. Even though I ended with a D in this course, I highly suggest taking this course with Barone. He is caring and explains topics very well. He is very accessible, as he bases office hours on his students availability. Take Barone!
This was my first math class at Georgia Tech, and I loved it. The course is rigorous, but very interesting to learn. I think what helped me a lot was Barone's online recordings. It allowed me to pause the video and figure out any confusing material that I did not get instead of being confused for the rest of the time at the in-person lectures.
I'm a transfer student, so this was the first math course I took at Georgia Tech. It's a lot more rigorous than the ones I took at my previous college, so it will be a challenge. The textbook is not useful, and I wouldn't pay for MyMathLab since WebWork is better and free. Everything that you need for exams is covered in lecture and in the slides.
The hardest class I have ever taken in my entire life.
Barone is such a personable and awesome lecturer. While I wouldn't say he's the best of *all time*, he is definitely among the other 1554 professors. Definitely recommend asking questions to him or his TAs and you'll be fine in the class. For 1554, he gives a lot of resources like past exams(make sure to do them!) to help you do well in the class.
Sal Barone is a great lecturer, supportive to his students, and is clearly well-liked amongst his class. However, if you are registered with ODS or have a significant disability that's not going to be the case. His dismissive attitude towards accommodations and disability lead this to be one of my worst semesters. Be warned, and be prepared.
While linear is a difficult class Dr. Barone is an excellent lecturer. He is also accessible, but somewhat sarcastic, on discord, piazza, and other platforms. The tests cover conceptual material in terms of true/false questions which can be quite tricky; however, most of the tests are plug and chug.
Professor Barone was amazing! Linear algebra is incredibly difficult, but his lectures were amazing and really helped me learn the material. He records and posts all of his lectures, and he is accessible after class and in office hours. I would recommend going to all of the lectures and studios to get the best possible undersanding of the material.
Barone is a good lecturer with a great personality. His lectures are engaging and has a lot of examples. He's willing to stay behind very long after class for a discussion about topics related to the lecture.
One of my favorite professors so far. Very good lecturer, charisma, humor, and helpful for one-on-one questions. Provides so many helpful resources. Basically anyone taking linear algebra went to his lectures even if they didn't have him.
Barone is really good at getting concepts across. There are tons of resources for the class available online as well as his live streamed lectures (although the live lecture may not specifically be your section - attendance doesn't matter). My biggest complaint is that Sal is very stubborn and not very accommodating if you have any big ODS things.
Professor Barone is one of the best mathematics professors here at Georgia Tech. Even though the content of this class is difficult, he is easy to follow and he articulates his thought process well. All his lectures are posted online. Studio is useful as well. To study, practice exams are your best bet, as they mimic content and structure of exams.
Amazing lectures with great notes and always posts lecture recordings online. Studio sections by TA were also very helpful. Practice exams are very similar to the actual exams. Practice the true/false questions since they are easy points but also are a significant part of the exam.
Great professor who cares about students. He is a good lecturer and posts recordings. Even if you don't get him as your teacher you can still sit in lectures. He can only teach so much in class, be prepared to practice lots outside of class. He posts the old exams. I would take all 12 of them before exams and I was able to do well.
Professor Barone did a fantastic job teaching linear algebra. It is a tough class especially if you try to take it first semester (which I would not recommend), but he works hard to make sure you have every opportunity to succeed, and really does a great job explaining concepts that are tough to grasp. Highly recommend!
Barone is an amazing professor who's clearly passionate about teaching and cares about his students. Linear algebra is HARD!!! But Sal made the topic engaging and easier to grasp. He goes quickly in lectures but I found that attending his office hours made a significant difference as he's even better 1-1. Just practice & do all the homework/exams.
Everyone attends his lectures regardless of what section they're actually signed up for. 1554 is a very easy class and he is an amazing teacher so even if you're struggling you'll do fine!
Sal is the best math professor I have taken from at Georgia Tech. He makes challenging topics very digestible, and reviews lots of sample problems + approaches you can take for problems he doesn't review. He's very approachable and active on Piazza. Tests are moderately difficult but nothing you can't prepare for by taking a few practice exams.
Don't avoid him for multi, but if there's another professor take them. Wouldn't recommend, but isn't the worst. Tests are hard.
Second time taking Barone, he's the goat. I struggle to think the same way he does on some topics as it can often be very abstract. Additionally he is fair but tough, much made the class a bit hard. But overall a great professor and what I would want from a Math prof.
just a chill guy
Best professor I've had at Tech, easily.
Sal is a great lecturer and professor. Lectures are easy to follow. Class structure is very straightforward. Grading guidelines, although specific, are very clearly outlined and drilled into your mind through studio. This makes the tests very fair because you pretty much know exactly how it will be graded beforehand.
Unclear grading criteria. Rubrics take off points for small things, little to no points are given for being on the right track. Prerequisite material is not reviewed in class properly and if you don't figure out what to refresh before the exam it can cost you tons of points. He tries to make things fun in lecture but the exams just hurt.
