Sal is a good guy at heart, but I am not a big fan of his teaching. He is well known on campus, but I think he is overrated and seems to structure each lecture as he goes along, making things up to fit with what he tells us.
sal is awesome. dont take him if you need to learn anything, or need to hear truthful information. easy blowoff classes.

Mostly rambles about the topic and tests over his rambling. Not a mean-spirited guy but not a great teacher by any means.
Easiest B you'll ever get, but hardest A. Very nice, helpful guy who really cares about his students. I didn't feel like I learned much from his class. He put too much emphasis on things that he was interested in, and not enough emphasis on things that seemed to be more important.
I never read or studied and I got an 83% (an A was 86%). I flunked several tests and never got above a 76% on any of the others, usually I got a score in the mid 60s. I went to talk to him about it and he said not to worry. On class days before vacations he'll give a quiz then let you leave.
Sal is the best teacher I've ever had. He's funny, fun to be around, and makes everything interesting. He also made the class easy to get an A. He was very concerned with everyone's grades and what we thought about our final scores.
Sal is very dedicated to his subject area as well as the personal wellbeing of his students. He is a great guy, and his is one of the few classes I did not dread going to.
Salvator is by far the best instructor i have ever had. Never in highschool or anywhere else did i have a guy who made learning soo fun and easy. Sometimes he can carry on about pointless stories but he will make sure you understand everything before moving on. Very well known and well liked
If taking general, you can't go wrong with Sal. Show up and study the material and it is an easy A. He needs to organize the class better, and knowing what he expects would be helpful. For majors, Sal's class is not a good choice. For everyone else, he's the best for general.
Sal is fun, no denying that. He's friendly and outgoing, and I enjoyed the class enough not to skip it (this is unusual for me). If you are a psych major, I'd suggest taking someone else; I don't think I've learned very much. But non-psych majors looking to get their LSPs out of the way should try to get into his class.
Very entertaining and interesting. He covers the material at an easy pace and asks for student involvement. Requires studying if you want an A, easy B if you show up to class. Seperate exams for lecture notes and reading notes.

While quite friendly and obviously interested in the subject, Sal frequently told "stories" that were in all likelihood false. I didn't learn much from the class, but it fulfilled a requirement and held my attention.
He is a very helpful teacher and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet if you get to know him. He is a very fair grader and is an easy person to listen to when he is lecturing because he finds someway to make it interesting. I wish all my teachers were like him.
when going to truman u need to take one class with sal costa. its fun and entertaining and u never want to skip. Getting an A is not hard at all. strongly recommend him
waste of time. he tells stories/shows films strictly for shock value, to entertain the class, and only succeeds in making fun of people with psych problems. plus he hangs out with frat guys all day, which reflects in his personality.
Very interesting class, I found him amusing. Not the easiest to get help from.
good teacher
He is an awesome teacher. Very good listener and funny. I had him in an interim and he was very enjoyable and I was always looking forward to his class. I would take him every day.
Sal is a person who unlike many psych professors realizes his class is not the only one you have. He tells you exactly what you need to know for his tests. They are mostly out of the texts with the exception of his serial killers class which is tricky. Take his class and have a good time and get an A for average work input.
Generally a good teacher. I enjoyed his lectures. Very entertaining, but some stories are random and off topic. Test were okay.
he is a great teacher
Someday, Sal, God will make you take one of your own tests as the entrance exam to get into heaven. Your task will be to figure out what your own questions mean, and sadly you will most likely fail. But the guys in hell will be lucky to have you, because you are the most entertaining professor I have ever had.
I don't deify him as some others do. Very knowledgable of his area, lectures are usually pretty good but the tests were pretty bad--there wasn't really a right way to study for them. He's good about rounding up and doing what he can to give you the highest grade possible, but I don't know how much you LEARN from the class--was like a review of 166.
He's a little crazy, but it was a great class. He genuinely cares about the students, and definitely loves the material. So what if his stories may be a wee bit falsified?
ok i love sal. i think everyone should take him at some point when they go to truman. he has your attention the whole time in class. he curves the grading scale big time to help. he is one of my favorite teachs i have had. take him
Amazing professor!
What the hell his tests are annoying. Study hard and study the detail of every sentence, or he'll get you. Not a bad work load. No Final. Funny guy. Got by with an A somehow.
Sal Costa is a god!
Easy class... lots of extra credit opportunities and he grades on a curve. Tests were easy and he gives you a lot of the test questions word for word the day before the test when you review. I didn't study at all for this class and got an A. I didn't learn much though. Fun class, but not good if you're actually looking to learn something.
SK was amazing!! I have taken all the classes I can from Sal and would tell anyone to take him. He is helpful and does reviews before the tests. All in all a great class
Sal Costa is your best bet to wipe out the social science mode, especially if you kind of like psychology. The tests aren't too taxing - the note tests weren't too bad, and the book tests were open-book. You usually do one project of some sort - it's not too hard. All in all, he's a pretty good LSP professor. I recommend him.
Gives oral notes for note tests. Was really nice having most(or all) of the book tests open-book.Questions on tests are enigmatically written so be a good transcriber of the oral notes. I was expecting a B,but somehow got an A.Gives lots o' chances to earn ex-credit.Sal likes to talk.If you see him outta class, say hello or suffer his verbal wrath.
I took abnormal psychology with him. It was really interesting, and I enjoyed his lectures. He does not get mad if you show up late, but he appreciates you showing up on time. This class is good for people who are going into psychology and those who are not.
The class is okay, but Mr. Costa is not professor material. Much of the information is outdated and he cares more about whether people like him than what we learn. He also spends to much time complaining about his peers and other school staff members, none of which is pertinent to class.
He's okay. He gets really off topic and talks about himself a lot. He mispronounces a lot of words (e.g. narcissistic), which can be annoying. His note tests were no fun, but the book tests were pretty easy because they were all open book. The project isn't too bad. I wouldn't say not to take him, but I wouldn't highly recommend him either.
Costa is a good guy and knows his material. He likes to tell SEMI-relevant stories that are fun, but not necessary. Tests are relatively difficult, but reviews some before the test which helps a lot. Book test are open book, note test you have no help. One presentation/paper. Not hard. Extra credit an option as well. Beware of sarcasm though.
Good teacher. Nice and fun guy who makes lecturing the whole class period somewhat interesting for a change. Easy B and not an extremely hard A. I barely pulled out an A because he curves the grading scale a good amount. Definitely recommended.
I took abnormal psych with sal this semester and had a great time. Class was constantly interesting, there was no homework with the exception of a group paper during the semester. Open book tests are pretty easy, but the note tests were a bit difficult and require some studying. Overall it wasn't too tough of a class.
Sal is a happy-go-lucky guy, who is so entertaining and so easy to listen to in class. He does hold your attention. The problem is, he teaches introductory courses and when you get into advanced classes, you find you don't have the foundation of knowledge you need. I got an A in his class, but learned little I later realized.
Sal is a really cool guy. He is both interesting and interested in you (sometimes: think of Slughorn from HP). He in engaging and funny, but you simply do not learn enough from this guy. If you want an easy A, go for it, but if you want to learn don't. Pop-psych personified i would take what he says with a grain of salt. Quick fact: no PhD.
Oh Sal... Sal likes picking on people and making pretty offensive comments. He is very knowledgable in certain areas, but he spent three weeks talking about medications and meningitis (Abnormal Psychology? Nope.) He skips schizophrenia and dissociative disorders, which is a big deal. Test are MC, but terribly worded. Just be careful.
Costa tries to get kids interested in psychology and thinks he is very funny but is not so much in reality. Easy class with lots of extra credit opportunities but ScanTron MC tests are oddly worded and seems like the answer key is wrong.
Sal is a wonderful person and a horrible professor. He is unbelievably disorganized, and many students in my class had trouble figuring out what we were supposed to do. By the end of the semester, he had failed to keep on schedule, so we had 3 tests, 3 papers, and a novel reading due in three weeks time. Interesting class, but bad professor.
Sal sometimes gets sidetracked, but the upside is that he engages you and relates many areas back to other fields of study. Many people on here complain about not learning anything, but I felt like I learned a decent amount. Sal cares more for his students than almost any other professor I've ever had. Don't ever text in class though!
Sal is fun!!! Take him for Intro and you'll at least learn a little bit and hopefully foster an interest in psychology (I know I did). The tests can be tricky, yes... but an A in the class is beyond attainable.
Decent class. Sal is a lot of fun and gives a ton of extra credit, so making the grade you want is not very difficult. Wording on the test can be confusing, but overall the tests are not very difficult, so it makes little difference.
Lectures were random and unorganized. Nothing is predictable in his class and thus confusing and hard to know what is coming up and what to prepare for.
Great professor, willing to answer questions, gives you all the information, just study!
I liked Costa mostly because he's an interesting person. He doesn't believe in failing people or reading off of powerpoints all class. He just wants you to learn something, which you will, it just might be in one of his random stories instead of for the test. Since he teaches multiple sections you never know what will end up on his notes tests.
Loved his lectures, he's funny, enthusiastic, but can be a little over the top sometimes. I highly recommend taking any of his classes. Hated his scan tron tests though. Key seemed to be off.
Costa is great and keeps the class interesting, you really need to take advantage of the hand outs for the note test and really read the book for the book test, he curves the grades so you should get an A if you just try.
Sal is clear about what you should be taking notes on. However, when it comes to tests, they are almost all multiple choice questions that do not indicate your overall level of learning but what unimportant detail you happened to remember. Curves the grade and grades easy on paper. I struggled in this class because of the multiple choice tests.
Sal is a great person and obviously cares about his students however he should not be teaching. His tests have ridiculous questions over material never covered and he is extremely disorganized in his teaching. When asked a question, he simply restates what he just said and doesn't actually answer the question. He should not be teaching at all.
He's a great guy, all around. He makes clear all the things that you can expect on the tests, and he holds class-long review sessions the class before. Getting an A on the tests shouldn't take more than 2-3 hours of studying the material. Gracious with extensions. Attendance feels like it's mandatory because that man has the eyes of a hawk.
Great Professor, learned a lot but show up to class and study.
Sal is an amazing guy. He does so much for his students such as setting up summer internships. However, his teaching methods and material is severely outdated, for example he doesn't use blackboard. This causes lecture and due dates to be confusing. It's an easy A, however don't expect to actually learn much information relative to modern psych
Sal's really funny and easy, but I'm not learning anything. His lectures are scattered, he's unorganized, he makes up a bunch of crazy stories that get annoying fast. This class is pretty much if you searched online "mental disorders" and read the definitions of each. That's all I'm getting from this class, superficial definitions of disorders.
His note tests are a little tough, the book tests were easy.
Sal Costa is one of the best professors I've ever had, even though his teaching is a bit outdated (he does not use blackboard or allow you to type notes in class). His experience in the field of psychology is what really makes this class interesting. Taking Abnormal Psychology with Prof. Costa really renewed my love for psychology.
Dr. Costa really knows the field of abnormal psychology. For the most part, he is able to translate his experiences actually working in the field to the class room setting. However, there were some issues with understanding concepts in the class because his lectures are a bit all over the place.
LOVE SAL! His stories are hilarious and he makes most of the class fun. No technology what so ever in his class though. 2 papers with a day off to do each. Has separate book and note tests and lectures continue over new material before test over old material... really great guy. Forgets and hops a lot in his lectures often NO FINAL!!!!
Costa can be all over the place, he loves to tell stories or switch topics, but if you focus you should be fine! His tests are hard but he does lots to help you with it. Lots of extra credit and bonus points! Has a curve of 86% for an A. It's obvious he cares about psych and that his students understand it. He is also hilarious if you like sarcasm!
He's very hilarious and he curves your grades like 86 will be an A. There will be a lot of extra credits. Being an intl student, sometimes i couldnt understand his lectures since he hops back and forth between topics and talk about a lot of different stories. Anyways he's a great professor though. He has book test and note tests but NO FINALS YAYY!
Hard tests, but he usually curves the grading scale early in the semester. Right now, a 75 or above is a B.
Costa is a little scattered, but he makes class fun and knows what he's talking about. Book tests and lecture tests are separate, and no final. Tests are of all different point values and some more difficult than others. Overall, I had a great time in his class and learned a lot!
I honestly felt that I would've done better in this class if I was in the greek system. Because I have no interest in that aspect of campus life, I didn't feel like Costa gave any respect to my contributions to anything in class.
Funny. Lots of tests and quizzes. Half are lecture-based, half are text-based. Read the textbook and you'll be okay for those. His tests are all over the place. His lectures are somewhat all over the place, but try to take notes really well so you can study for lecture exams. They're not too bad, just don't slack off like so many people tend to do.
Interesting class for sure, book tests are extremely difficult, subject is very interesting
I love Sal. He's so funny, and a great professor overall. Pretty easy to talk to. There's book and note tests about every other week. Expected test material was a little confusing at times. You just have to study. Learned a lot. Good Intro class. Strongly recommend him.
Not a good communicator. Tests included tiny, irrelevant details from the text. Wording on tests tries to trick you on purpose. Class is EXTREMELY test heavy. His lectures are great if you're an auditory learner, not for visual learners. Many people recommended him to me, but he didn't live up to the hype. Avoiding his classes from now on.
I love Costa as a person, but as a prof he makes me want to rip my hair out. His lectures are all over the place, often mixing up info or going back to add to topics talked about weeks ago. His test are insane, he relishes trick questions, especially ones that focus on tiny details that don't matter to the broad topic. He's a great guy, bad prof
Dr. Costa is awesome! I learned a ton in his class. He was disorganized in his lectures, which makes it difficult to take notes. Tests cover a lot of information, and it's difficult to pick out what he sees as important. Has separate book and lecture tests which helps narrow the material. Very caring and friendly person!
He doesn't teach updated material. The information he asks about on tests are irrelevant to the subject as a whole. Info that he'll talk about for a note test will appear in a book test 2 months later. Having to focus on content for both note and books tests at once is not conducive to learning. I would recommend taking this with a different prof
Sal is such a kind hearted guy and always teaches such a fun class. You may not always learn everything the best way, but his personality and the fun you get out of class is worth it to me. I have taken 3 classes with him if that tells you anything! I usually got an A or B in his classes, but if you are dedicated, you can def get an A!
This class is really awesome, and Dr. Costa does a really good job of making it that way. There are tests and presentations to do for the class, and all of the material is presented either through his lectures (oral) and books. He is passionate about the material, and he doesn't pull any punches. Be prepared to be wowed by the intense material
Professor Sal Costa's lectures are the most entertaining lectures I've experienced by any professor. He backs up info with real-life examples and occasionally funny stories of his life. There are a lot of tests that he doesn't do a final and he gets them back to you quickly. However, he is hard to follow along which can be a major downfall.
Expect long anecdotes during class that don't pertain to tests. He will not read or answer your emails because he avoids technology like the plague (I had to email the psych secretary). He throws out conflicting info about grades (curves, the grade you have, etc.) With his age and hopelessness w/ tech, I don't think he should be teaching anymore.
Sal Costa is highly respected in his field, amazing man, awesome professor and wonderful friend for students and faculty. I took his psychology and parapsychology classes back in 1979 - 1982. Yes, this may seem like ancient history to students today but his classes are some of the best and fondest memories I have of NMSU - Truman State.
Sal is by far my favorite professor in the psych department. Even though he does not provide powerpoints and his lectures are him just talking, he really is a great professor. For other commenters to say he should no longer be teaching because of his age is really mean and inconsiderate. If you go to class and do the readings, you'll get an A or B.
I took Sal's class because I had heard good things about him but I was very disappointed. He was unclear in his instructions for assignments, switched test dates without much notice, and frequently changed the test format from what he said it would be without warning. He also was rude and unprofessional to students on several occasions.
I found him to be arrogant and actually condescending to students.
Love him and his class!!! So nice and caring. Great man
