He is an unprofessional and he can't express himself beyond a basic level. His lectures are very off topic and the midterms and final are drawn from a pool so odds are most of what he talks about won't be on the exam. Worthless course and prof.
Sometimes gets off topic...course is interesting!
One of the best professors for liberal studies, very friendly and helpful, and the course is interesting.
he honestly seems like a nice guy; but once he starts his lectures he brings up stats that have no relevance to anything. his exams have nothing to do w/ his lectures, so you're basically left to fend for yourself.
I took this online course, and he did an excellent job. He presented slides and audio. He was very quick to respond to any questions.Excellent teacher.
This is the best course I have ever taken. I learned so much. Guzzo made this course come alive. he is down to earth, but brillant at the same time. he helped me see the world in a new way.
awesome prof...not full of himself...clear...funny and an all around good guy. text was boring as hell but his lectures helped to make this course worthwhile and interesting...
Good guy. I had conflictis with the way my exams were scheduled, and he gave me alot of help sorting everything out. It took two weeks, but he was very cool about everything. He's a laid back kinda guy. No stress in his class.
lazy!
Great prof, very helpful, lectures interesting and tests are easy
This guy is a joke! He rambles on about stats that have no connection to the course material. He is difficult to to deal with. Perhaps a bit arrogant. Marking is bizzare. Attendance? Get real! Attendance marks in university is a JOKE!
i really enjoyed this class. i found the material so down to earth and revealing. i took statistics before so i understood most of what was said in class. however, most undergraduates without any stats background may be lost. i really enjoyed the lectures. since then i have decided to change my major to sociology. i would recommend this course.
great course. learned a lot. he makes the course very interesting. i would take the course again
Prof Guzzo was a very good professor. He explained concepts very well and related the course to real-life examples in the world. It was a VERY interesting course and he really makes it worthwhile. The exams were fair and there were really good class discussions and his notes were excellent. I wish he taught more courses!
He was an excellent prof!! I was expecting to have a very boring course..I mean it's sociology, how fun can it be....but he totally proofed me wrong!! His class was interesting, and practical. I actually learned a lot from that class. Thank you for your hard work, Prof Guzzo!
I took this course online.. He is a very good profesor.. Only marks a bit hard on the essay.. But overall amazing course. TAKE IT ONLINEEEE.
This prof was awesome. He was so helpful, all you gotta do is ask. The course is fun as well. DEF take it if you can
i loved the prof ! he is so nice, not boring. very very clear with material and the tests are not too bad either.. would recommend the prof and the course
he is really hot. and a good teacher. i'd do it again.
this was my first sociology class. i learned more in this class than in all my other classes combined. i found the readings interesting. the tests were fair. he really made the class very interesting. i wish he taught more classes
His tests killed everyone..class average was below passing...but very interesting lectures...u ll never sleep in his class...his makes u read the book coz the exam comes from the book material rather thn lecture notes..too much reading :S:S
one of the bestest prof for soc 103. He's really worth it. He's so down to earth and always willing to help. If you're thinking of taking soc 103 mr. guzzo is the best.I totally loved him!
this class was great. i learned a lot. the prof is very knowlegable. the prof also taught us to write essays. i have never been taught properly until now. i wish i would have taken this course years earlier. this is one of the best courses i have taken. i recommend it.
I love this prof. He's hot and he teaches great. He always bell curve so u get a good mark if his exams were too hard. Very, very helpful. Teaches u to write essays the right way.Wish he taught more classes. He is amazing. I so love him!!!!!
He does not bell curve and does not answer questions. Class average was low for test/final/essay. If you get this teacher run. Course does not test the students' understanding of sociology (not applied). Multiple choice questions asking for the statistics of homicide in the US 10/15 years ago is absurd. Lots of memory work required.
i took the online course in the summer. the course was very interesting. the mp3 lectures made it feel like being in the classroom. the tests were fair. I think this course was very good.
Really Interesting. Makes it fun and I learn a lot. I understand and feel good after class and during class
never BS on essay, because he WILL give you an F
I had soc 103 with Mr. guzzo and it was awesome. I got anA+ with just studying the night before exams. He is especially helpful with the essay. He is one of the best prof I had. I will be taking him for soc 203. I admit he does ask some statistics but he also bell curves. He is good, do not think what others say they're just slackers!!!!
hes a great teacher.. lots of fun
Hello
Awesome! Lectures are great. Very clear.
This a great class, it can get boring but who cares it's an easy mark...though sometimes he tends to repeat the same joke, he'll help u with ur essay even if u don't know where to begin! One of the best @ RyeHigh
he is the BEST,
E X C E L L E N T ! ! !
interesting class, clear points. hes a joker i love it
one of the BESTT profs! =)
It's impossible not to pass.
Great Prof
Amazing professor. Makes the course material as interesting as possible with stories and jokes. The midterm, essay and final were firm, but fair. Do not rely on the powerpoints. The textbook will help a great deal and it will reflect in your mark. He bellcurves as well, but it does not make a huge impact. Read the book, and you will do fine.
I found this proffessor to be very lazy in his teaching style. In particular, I found there was very little guidence when it came to our final essay. There was no clear outline and I feel this is essential for when actually writing the essay. Also the tests givin did not test knowledge of the subject matter, but rather, linguered on names, dates...
he's an okay teacher. I am pretty sure there are better soc teachers at ryerson but i guess if you have him, your not going to suffer, but you need to work for your mark ! read the notes he gives and lectures!
He has tons of social experiences to accompany his teaching. He is very helpful to students, but sometimes needs some push to remind him to get on top of stuff. Tough but fair on paper marking. Averagely easy on quiz questions. Allows open discussions with students in class. Brings additional material to complement the textbook for teaching, which
The one thing I would remember about his class are his hilarious jokes!....(even though sometimes it doesn't relate to the topic being taught).
whoever said he doesn't provide guidance on the essay, thats absolutely incorrect. he's one of the most helpful and funniest teachers at ryerson! =) definitely an awesome prof..
Great class. not a lot of work. very interesting topics. i learned a lot. tests are not hard. i would take it again if i could
Best sociology teacher ever! His lectures are exremely intressting, funny and useful. His exams are based on what he teaches, no surprises. He is very down to earth and fair in his marking. Strongly recommended for all possible sociology courses!!
easiest class i've ever taken. managed to get an a with minimal effort. cancels class all the time, total bird course. he makes the material pretty interesting, and says some funny stuff. exams aren't the easiest but he bell curves.
This is the best sociology proff at Ryerson. He makes the lectures so intresting and wants all of his students to do well. Read the material carefully, attend his classes and you'll do just fine!
Teaches in an effective way that will keep you interested. You'll be more likely to pass than fail but will need to work a bit harder if you want a good mark. One of my favourite/best profs I have had.
HORRIBLE. I taught myself more then he taught me. Very unorganized, extremely unreliable. Never in his office. Teaches race inequality like class struggle..two different things but not in his world!
Very cool guy, makes the class very laid back and easy to learn. Highly recomended
Terrible online course (my 10th online course) MP3 & notes lectures are helpful. Multiple choice questions are challenging. Little guidance on essay which was worth 40% of total mark. Extremely hard marker for an "easy" course. Would not take it again or recommend it. Class average mark "C".
Engaging and funny prof, class is straightforward and easy, but is strict on assignment deadlines. Teaching style is on the laid back side, but tends to evoke personal tales to his lectures.
this guy is really unreliable. unorganized and messy. Takes 2 whole months to mark an essay. does not provide any legit answers to his reasonings
This was my second course with Sal, and both times he was extremely helpful when it was required. I'm unsure how he marks the essays, but I do know that guidance on writing it was provided in one of the lectures. Sure his expectations are high, but this is university, so all of you who are complaining need to shape up. I got an A quite easily.
Honestly everyone Sal is the Best teacher ive had in my 3 years career at this school. Helps, ACTUALLY teaches, extends unrealistic deadlines, tells you exactly whats on the exams, and on top of all that hes funny too. Other teachers should really look up to him and take a lesson on modern teaching instead of boring kids to death & making them fail
He was amazing! I had him twice, and would love to another another.
great prof. one of my best. nice guy. hepful. very interesting lectures. i recommend it.
I didn't learn anything.. yet I somehow pulled off a B! Enough said.
Awesome prof, enjoyed his lectures.
Was replaced by an idiot named Graeme Metcalf, unfortunately. Still, during the time I had with him, he WAS a little disorganized with slides, but definitely will clear things up if you ask. Busy all the time, but extremely smart and hilarious. READ TEXTBOOK THOROUGHLY. He is very text-book based, but is pretty easy and laid back.
This is honestly one of the best professors out there teaching and we are lucky to have him at Ryerson. He is a great guy, very hillarous (like a standup comedian) makes sociology a lot of fun and laughter. He explains sociological topics with awesome examples that are very funny and make it very crystal clear. Overall one of the best professors!!

He was funny, should be a stand up comedian. Not a prof. He never hesitated to remind the class that he went to Oxford. His slides were redundant, he kept on showing the same points over again. He covered very little information during lectures, and then gave really hard exams. He relied to much on bell curving. And he was completely unapproachable
Great prof. learned a lot. i recommend this guy. i think you would greatly enjoy his class as i did.
WELL WORTH MY LOWER LIBERAL! He's funny, entertaining and he really teaches you alot of random crap! I will definitely take another course with him. Thumbs up to the guzzzzo!
I absolutely LOVE sal.. he was beyond amazing. He was so funny, and OH also a harvard and oxford grad! His comments and remarks would make my day. I would run to class and hated skipping his class. O and did I mention its IMPOSSIBLE to fail this course.. if u fail his class you should consider dropping out.
You win some, you lose some: outstanding lectures, sketchy marks. Do you want to trade off your GPA for a thoroughly entertaining performance? I would pay to hear him speak but I would not take another of his classes. Very helpful and wants to build you up, which is admirable. Then you feel shortchanged on exams and essays. Reliance on bell curve.
Okay so this is the 2nd time I'm taking Guzzo. I took 103 and 203 with him. These two classes are the EXACT SAME SHIT! His lectures are the same, powerpoints are the same, and same jokes! =P I got an A in both! I skipped so much though, I just didn't learn anything useful. ps. He bell curved for both 103 and 203 mid terms AND finals! Not bad LOL =O
If there is a lower liberal you would need.. TAKE THIS ONE WITH GUZZO! This or SOC103, same material but different lower liberal! I cheated the Ryerson system by investing both my liberals into these courses! I practically used the same textbook and notes! HAHAHA what a world we live in! >=]
Hands down - one of the most interesting people I've met and is NEVER boring or annoying. You won't even realize that you're sitting in class, his classes are pure entertainment. You don't have to talk, just sit back, relax and enjoy his show. Marks easy but b/c the course is all common sense
States his opinion without considering implications
If youre looking for an easy liberal STAY AWAY from Soc203! I've taken tons of SOC classes, and this course was ridiculously hard. He purposely makes hard tests (tells us ahead of time that he'll need to bell curve it since half of us will fail!) and expects you to memorize every detail of every textbook sentence, SUCH obsure and trick questions
This was actually a pretty easy liberal. His first midterm (worth 40%) was brutal but he bellcurves about 10-12% depending, then the presentation which is worth 20%; that is a complete joke, very easy to get a good mark there and the exam was very STRAIGHTFORWARD and he also bellcurves. Just remember to read from the textbook and you will be fine.
Easy a+ for me,he boosts the mark up for everything by 10-15%. He is interesting to listen to, genuinely cares about what he teaches. If you want a high mark read the recommended material and read his powerpoints. You can get into the 80's by knowing the power-points though if you read the textbook pages he recommends you will breeze through.
An interesting person to know. Kept class interesting. You need to pay attention to reading materials. He is fun to play with.
This prof is very easy. Tells you exactly what to study and gives you extra 10-15% after midterms. He scares you in the beginning but very nice at the end. His presentations are a JOKE. Can easily get 17 or 18 / 20 without even trying.
Down to earth guy, who knows his stuff. I learned more in this class than in my major, which isn't sociology. highly recommended.
EASIER PROF EVERR. BELCURVES EVERY EXAM. TAKE HIS COURSE IF U WANT EASY MARKS. JUST STUDY HIS PPTS.
AMAZING. That's really all I can say. If you do not take this class with this teacher you are missing out. Best professor I have ever had.
omg i'd skip his class so much and never did the readings! just do an amazing job on the presentation and learn from the slides and you're good! he is sooo funny
This prof was one of the best I have ever had at ryerson. I learned so much from him. His lectures are hilarious. The things you learn in his class will really enrich your understanding.
Easy Prof. Hard Tests. Bell curves every time. So its a win win !!
One of the best profs I have ever had. I learnt a lot. I recommend this professor to all my friends. His classes are interesting, multiple choice is not easy and relies a lot on the book material as well as critical thinking. Some of the mc questions are tricky. Overall, if you put effort, you get an A.
Tests are straight from his lectures which are interesting. Attendance assures a good grade.
Great prof, easy class. Class is not cumulative, midterm and exam are multiple choices, which require you to actually read the book, and they are bell-curved. Class is interesting and he is hilarious. Would definitely recommend this class to others.
He is hilarious, and sometimes even swears :P but in all seriousness, he doesn't really care about marking the midterms or exams, so they are about 60-70 mc ques. You NEED the txtbk, 75% of the course is in it, overall i got a C.
READ THE TEXTBOOK !!! his slides aren't good enough for the midterm/ final... He's approachable and emails back fast.. Guzzo is hilarious and i hope i can get into his 203 class.. He also bell curves.. thanks for the A plus
He's really funny and a great teacher. Could be more helpful at times.
Had him 4 SOC 103&507 and he is the best prof Ive ever had at Ryerson in the 5 years i went !! I actually learned alot in his class and improved my writing greatly. He bell curves, gives very fair exams/essays, & is really funny and ACTUALLY keeps you interested. Exams are not cumulative. All my friends had a great time too. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!
The man is funny and intelligent great professor.
Do not study off his notes/ppts for midterms and exam, use the textbook! THIS IS A MUST. He's a funny prof, classes are enjoyable. He bell-curved the midterm by 14% (that's crazy, I know!). He's an easy marker when it comes to presentations. Soc103 is a good lower liberal to take if you're looking for something easy, I got a B-
entertaining prof but STAY AWAY, his midterms and exams are extremely difficult to a point that they are the most ridiculous exams I have ever seen in my life, this course was the biggest mistake of my life and destroyed my GPA.
I LOVE SAL , my second liberal with him, yes his exams are hard but its university so its not gana be 2+2 easy , but i never went to class after the midterm just studied the text book the day of the exam and got an A+ , his course is a gpa boost, he bellcurves the exam like CRAZY !! O sal i will miss u, smart funny and easy
Don't make the mistake of going into SOC203. I loved 103, but 203 is taught with the exact same powerpoints, but with a completely different textbook. And the exam is based off that new textbook. I ended up skipping most of these classes because they were word for word the same as 103. But the exam is right out of the boring text. Great guy though
EASY marks. Study the textbook and you will be fine! Just one presentation which is a piece of cake
Soc103, Soc203, Soc507 - I've been to all three of his classes. Tells awesome stories in order to make the concepts easier to understand. All multiple choice exam - based on the textbook. They are tough, but he bell curves. Group presentation instead of a bloody paper! Definitely worth taking if you want to get your liberals out of the way!!
Great guy, super funny and class is always entertaining. For the exams, do your best to memorize the textbook. Literally. I did this and got over 95% on the final. Good class for those who like a funny prof and have good memory! Best grade I've ever gotten. He also lets you give yourself your own attendance mark.
Interesting lectures but the two textbooks used were very dry and somewhat boring. The material itself is not hard but the exams were pretty difficult. Exams are VERY textbook based. He also marks really easy on presentations. Overall I almost failed the midterm but ended the course off with a B.
Sal is a great guy. He usually keeps things interesting because he is genuinely interesting. For the project we had to do a group presentation. I suck at presentations and I got an A+. Also, if you do bad on the exam, talk to him, if your a good student he will raise your mark. Amazing prof, he inspired me to be a better student.
I would honestly say that Sal is one of the best profs at Ryerson. The course was so interesting I wish I could take it again. There's no essay, instead there's a presentation which was fantastic. The topics for the presentation are so interesting and he let's you take it in any direction.
He's an interesting prof. Keeps you interested in class, however he's a tough marker and his midterm and final are worth a real lot. If you love presentations this is the course for you. If you dread them good luck passing his class.
One of the best profs ive had. His lectures are very interesting and entertaining, he tells a lot of stories related to the material. Made the 9 am lecture worth coming to. However exams are tough and based almost entirely on the textbook. I would take more courses with him and would recommend him to anyone!
AMAZING PROF! His classes are always interesting and he truly knows how to engage students. A lot of reading but as long as u study and keep up with it, an A is very possible to get. :)
Great prof, explains everything really well and is so fair. Isn't one of those profs that will trick you and dock marks for the smallest things. Although his final was hard, I would definitely recommend him to anyone, if they are interested in sociology or not.
Sal is the best prof I've had! He's extremely funny, engaging and helpful. He will even go to the extent of meeting with you after class and helping you on things you didn't understand or things you wanted to discuss further. Very fair prof overall but his final exam was a little challenging. Definitely would wanna re-take this course :)
Sal is a really nice guy and a really good prof BUT I would say that it was not an easy course! I did enjoy it and did get a good mark, but I had to try hard! Midterm, group presentation/essay plus final exam. READ from the textbook! Not much on the exams are from his ppts. Overall, if you have time to work hard, good course.
AMAZING PROFF! VERY CLEAR WITH WHAT HE WANTS! VERY HELPFUL AND APPROACHABLE! HIS CLASS ARE INTERESTING! OVERALL HE'S A GREAT PROFF!
Very interesting and easy class. He explains things very well. His lectures dont exactly match the textbook but if you want to do well READ and MAKE NOTES FROM TEXTBOOK.
Great Prof, but if he teaches this course with not exams and only with papers be careful! He doesn't explain exactly what he wants, he doesn't return the essays back in time for you to have an understanding of how you did and he is ridiculously hard marker when it comes to the essay he gave no particular detail about. Be cautious!358
Amazing.
just read the book :) good luck
I took this course during the spring, the same time that he decided to get rid of the textbook and only give us readings. The breakdown was two 40% essays and a 10% presentation. He did not give much detail on how to do the essay. He gave back the essay very late as well. Hes a nice guy and kept class interesting but he was not that clear.
Dr. Guzzo is very enthusiastic and interesting. Didn't sleep for a minute in class and didn't need breaks either. The midterm was a test of how well the student has the books memorized rather than the concepts. His course was an eyeopener as to how society works if you actually listen and retain what he teaches.
Sal is the best professor I have had so far at Ryerson. Do the readings or come to class and know the lecture inside out. I didn't do any of the readings but ended with a A+ from just the lecture and prior knowledge. He is very helpful! I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS CLASS TO EVERYONE AS IT REALLY OPENS YOUR EYES TO THE INEQUALITIES IN SOCIETY.
AMAZING PROF! TAKE HIM!!!!!! If I tried a bit harder, I would have gotten an A+ (other courses screwed me over)
OH MY GOD I LOVE SAL. He is hilarious; never fails to make his students laugh. I actually looked forward to going to his class every week. He made class bearable, and his lectures were intriguing. Walked out of there learning a lot. honestly wish he taught all my courses- would motivate me to come to class more often. WOULD RECOMMEND HIM
Sal is so funny! Always makes you laugh! You'll never be bored in his class!! His lectures are amazing however, they don't relate to his mid term&finale at all:( READ THE TEXT BOOK AND START EARLY!There is so much to read for this course, and if you're not on top of things, you'll fall behind. Honestly, an easy C with zero effort& last min studyin!
Sal is hilarious BUT extremely blunt. You have to go into his course with an open mind and try not to get offended by what he says. He makes himself available to students who seek help. He gave me a lot of great feedback when it came down to the essay which was worth 30%. He's a tough marker, but if you follow his guidelines, you'll do fine!
Sal is funny but extremely rude to students. In my experience, he called out many students, making fun of them for their programs such as fashion, business, and journalism. he only likes engineering. he even made another student tell a woman in business in her 4th year how important to the world she isisnt and made him rate her on a scale of 1-10.
Class is really easy. He curves all tests and the assignment doesnt take so much work. He's pretty interesting overall and although you may not agree with everything he says, it creates great discussions.
He's straight up, and he calls things the way they are, some people don't like that. He loves to make jokes during lectures, but they surprisingly help you understand the content. He's a fair grader on the essay, and his exams are multi choice, very straight forward.
Not a fan of him personally, I found him to be arrogant and offensive, however, he will apologize if you tell him you're offended. His humour is often at the expense of his students. Lecture are almost pointless in terms of testable material, but tests and essays are fair and expectations are clear.
I absolutely loved going to his class. Really funny guy, his lectures are very clear and he posts everything online. Going to his class is important cause he picks random days to do attendance. I would 100% take a class with him again, I learned a lot.
I have to say, I was not a fan of him as a professor. He is funny and is always getting the class to laugh, but his lectures seem to go on forever. He seems very knowledgeable, however, a lot of which he discusses in class is barely testable information. He is disorganized and even lost my final assignment. His tests are very difficult.
Today I received my mark for my final exam. I am an accessibility student, and wrote in the access centre. He inputs all the non-accessibilities students marks as zero before picking them up. It is unfair that he does not mark all the exams, and then make them visible to students. Its is a major equality issue, he should practice what he preaches.
A good prof overall, he is blunt and that's what I liked best about him, no need to go to class because the exams are solely based on the textbook, the exams aren't hard as long as you skim through the textbook, he is a tough grader for the group essay but it's really for your own good (he just wants you to improve your writing skills)
Professor Guzzo is very knowledgeable of the material and makes the course seem interesting, however the course is more difficult than it sounds. Both the mid term and final exams are multiple choice which require you to read every little detail in the text if you want to do well.
Final project was a group presentation and essay - marks difficult on the essay. Both midterm and final are completely multiple choice straight from the textbook and movies watched. He randomly takes attendance - sometimes twice a class. Reads straight from slides and sometimes goes on about random stuff.
He's a nice guy but I find that he marked the essay a bit too hard... Read the textbook don't use his slides!!
awful teacher, don't ever take his class. He talks about himself 90% of the lecture, sets you up for failure in this exams, and does not care about success. Do everything within his interest and does the minimum work possible. Also pretty blunt and rude
He's a good prof he is straight up and blunt. Slides are useless read the textbook guaranteed A also he bell curves the midterm and final. He does mark the essay a little harder than expected. But I really enjoyed him as a professor. Take his class
WARNING: If you screw up on the first midterm, it is literally your fault. GO THROUGH THE TEXTBOOK for SOC103, or the midterm will destroy you! Guzzo has an amazing personality and does draw a fine line for students to succeed. He wants you to succeed, and inspires you to do so! Take his word for it! Oh, one last thing, READ THE TEXTBOOK!
I have taken both his Social Class and Inequality and How society works classes and I can without a doubt say he was one of the funniest professors I have had thus far. His lectures are tolerable because he is very passionate about what he teaches, although, he is very blunt at times so beware. Overall, Guzzo is amazing and I would recommend him!
He doesn't teach anything from the textbook, however, the tests are taken entirely from the textbook - read it! He is funny and encapsulating, but going to class is effectively useless as he mainly teaches his opinions and statistics "confirming" them. They are nearly all massive generalizations about populations, but hey, that's sociology.
He's funny and his tests are only M/C but it's still not worth it. His lectures are not textbook based, yet all the tests are - on top of that get ready for vaguely worded questions and options. He doesn't give clear instructions and doesn't give great feedback. At least you're getting your money's worth on the textbook - the class, not so much.
Sal was a great prof. I found his lectures to be incredibly engaging, discussing a lot of the stereotypes we see within society. READ THE TEXTBOOK!! His lectures, although engaging do not cover what will be on the tests. He's a really tough grader for the paper. Tests are MC, based on the readings and can be difficult if you don't prepare.
Guzzo is an amazing professor and really passionate about what he talks about. He's funny and loud, which makes his courses one of the few that I look forward to attend. He's also a fair marker, but the wording of the scantron quizzes/exams can be tricky. You won't regret taking his classes!
A favourite! His lectures are very entertaining and super easy to understand. U don't have to go, but he does attendance a couple times during the semester . I cannot stress the importance of reading the textbook in this class, tests are 90% textbook material but they are super easy. he does grade the essay a lot tougher tho so beware.
Great professor, very blunt and funny. Tests are all based on the textbook nothing of value from the lectures except that they are interesting. Tough marker on the essay, however, if you follow his guidelines you will do well.
Don't think Sal should teach soc courses if his understanding and discussion of things is without nuance. Overall he's fine, evaluations are heavily from the textbook, but didn't like him as a person. Was annoyed by some of the things he said as they were questionable in intent.
He taught Sociology of Work and his lectures were both educational and entertaining. He is extremely passionate about the content. The two multiple choice exams have approximately 70 questions and are difficult. You must know or learn, especially for the final exam which was based on the book. He earned a PhD and has a lot of knowledge to share.
Honestly one of my favourite prof's in general. Lectures are extremely engaging and well presented. He's really funny but can be viewed as a tad offensive with some of his jokes/statements. Lectures are really interesting, but probably only account for 20% of the midterm/exam. The rest is the textbook, so make sure to read it! Essay is fairly easy.
Pretty good professor. Lectures are completely useless the tests are both based on the textbook. The Essay was marked pretty easy.
Sal's lectures are fun to attend, but useless in terms of content. Attendance is not mandatory, however, he takes attendance on 5 random occasions, and each one is worth 1% towards your final grade. Midterm and final are STRAIGHT from the textbook. Also marked a little hard on the group essay, so ask him to look at it before submitting.
I really don't like this prof. He does not care about his students and he is mean
don't like this prof at all, says something offensive every single class. makes me feel uncomfortable sitting there, wouldn't want to meet with him one on one. also just a bad professor in general, don't feel like he even teaches us anything about the course.
He is definitely not politically correct, but if you enjoy blunt and honest views, he is the man to see. I love this professor. He never holds back and says things how they are. Funny stories as well. Need to read the book for the MT. Lecture notes are near useless .
Best prof I've ever had. He does not sugar coat anything, and he calls out rich and privileged people (he's woke not offensive). Lecture notes will not help you with midterm or exam but honestly I went to every one. He knows what he is talking about and he's funny. Read the textbook when studying and his lectures help you understand themes.
Used lectures to talk about his personal life and spoke in dated, offensive language. Exams are word for word out of the textbook, multiple choice, using specific data and authors. Group essay was graded harshly, even in office hours just talked about himself. Can't believe he went to Harvard- not a positive learning experience.
Good prof in terms of solid lectures, fair (and clear) grading, accessible via email and he's really invested in the field of study. It was interesting hearing him explain things from having experienced them (e.g. he talked about what it's actually like to experience some buildings in Rome when he visited). I'd definitely choose him again.
Worst prof I've ever had. My evidence? He forgot to print the final exam ahead of time and had to cancel the final exam 5 minutes before we were supposed to write it. He made me think sociology is a joke and I will never take a SOC course again because of it.
He made the worlds most boring topic enjoyable. Did not take one note in the entire term yet got A's on the exam. Honestly an easy class if you just show up and listen to what he has to say. The final assignment is a group research paper, while group work is a nightmare all in itself he is accommodating if you go up to him with problems. 10/10 bird
I have never been more compelled to write a review on here then after taking a class with this prof. Guzzo was unprofessional, disrespectful, immature, & had no clue how to relate to students or understand the nuances of human beings at all for that matter. IMO should not be teaching Sociology. The "awesome" reviews on here have 2 be 100% fake.
What a guy!
Very straight forward when teaching. Midterm was purely based off the textbook so going to the lectures was pretty useless but attendance was taking 5 random times. Marked pretty tough on the group essay. The final exam was neither from the textbook or from his lectures, it was more common sense but still tough. Honestly not the most approachable.
He's a good prof! Get ready to read because almost all of the material on the exam was from the textbook, his lecture slides are not enough to study off. Attendance is mandatory because he takes attendance at random times and if you attend all the times he gives you marks. there is a group essay in this course worth 35% of your mark.
Tough grader, lectures are practically worthless because mid-term and final are solely based on the textbook. Really funny and charming guy overall but in terms of teaching wouldn't recommend.
Great prof, 2 exams and a paper, you have to read and buy the textbook if you want to do really well. All the exams are multiple choice and taken directly from the textbook so no extra readings. I was intimidated by the paper but he gives really clear instructions and even posts examples on what to do and what to avoid
At first seems abrasive and a bit brash. However after taking this class I realize Prof. Guzzo has a lot to provide academically and professionally. Reading the textbook religiously is a must if you want to pass, attend lectures as a portion of the mark is attendance, ask questions and make sure he knows who you are if you want favorable grades.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've ever had. His teaching style barely skimmed the surface of concepts I have learned from other professors and was abrasive. His language is unprofessional which normally I wouldn't mind but as his lectures did not give me much information it was frustrating. An uncomfortable learning environment.
Worst prof , not understanding, and very tough grader on essay . Midterm and final only based off of textbook ... wouldn't recommend this class
He is the man. He graduated from Western, Harvard and Oxford and engages with the class in critical discussions. Take my advice; READ THE TEXTBOOK AND IGNORE THE LECTURES. Stopped attending halfway through the term and landed A's on the midterm and final by relying on the textbook. The essay was marked very hard but he motivates me as a student.
Extremely rude and unorganized, the whole course outline was a mess and never posted updates/announcements, difficult to communicate with because he was so rude and obnoxious. Powerpoints are USELESS.
He was an okay teacher, but very rude and gave a lot of attitude to help students. Always had to try to make them feel dumb first and unclear with assignments.
Out of all my years at Ryerson, I have never had such an uncompassionate sociology professor. You would think that a sociology professor would understand that there are barriers that students face, but apparently he does not. He does no post due dates on the syllabus, is condescending, and extremely rude. I would not recommend you take his class.
Bird course 10/10. As long as you attend the lectures and do the readings it's a guaranteed A.
Guzzo is an honest and blunt professor, who is always willing to help you. Just because he's blunt doesn't mean he's being rude, he's just being direct. He'll help you a lot with the essay if you actively ask him, and he is very open with questions in class. However, his slides are a bit sloppy compared to the textbook, so study from the textbook.
Amazing prof. Took his course as an elective. Wasn't interested in socio at all before I took his class, but now I genuinely want to know more. He manages to make the simplest of lectures enjoyable. He gives good feedback. Had a great time in his class.
His lectures are actually the highlight of my week. I generally do not get good profs because i am in a harder program and his classes (my elective) really helped the week go by easier. You don't have to attend his lectures except for a few days where he takes attendance but you're going to want to anyways. Very straight up and easy going. EASY A.
He shouldn't be teaching this course. He is not very forgiving or kind to his students, I would even say that he's rude. Maybe there was some disconnect due to the online nature of the course, but I would really consider switching if you have him as a prof. You just won't do as well as you deserve to.
the worst professor I've ever had at Ryerson. So disrespectful and talked about himself for an hour out of the 2 hour lecture. It's like he learned about sociology in the 90's and hasn't updates his knowledge since, so outdated and offensive for no reason. If you can, avoid taking him and do yourself a favor.
I wasn't interested in Sociology until I attended his lectures!
gives 35 examples of a bad essay and 1 example of a good one. make it make sense. feedback is so mean, students names are also attached to the papers that exemplify bad work which feels invasive. says things like "buy an English book" to students instead of just providing feedback in a kind but critical way.
I remember Sal from when I studied nursing from 2002-06. I took every class I could with him. He's great, direct, makes class fun & he is honest about the world. Im rating him years later because I was just telling someone to take his class-I say this to anyone I hear is at TMU. Just shows how long a positive impression can last.
I learned a lot from this class and it was SO fun. I know that seems strange to say about a Uni course but it was totally true. I learned about things that I hadn't even thought about before. He's a funny guy and lectures feel like he's conversing with you. He makes it easy to understand and doesn't use complex language, making it very accessible.
I didn't do too well on the essay, so make sure to give yourself time to work on it, lol. The course is comprised of one essay and three quizzes, which were online in the Fall semester of 2024. The course was fairly easy, and the lectures were super informative. I attended every lecture because I felt like they were great life lessons too.
i went to ryerson 2006-2013, best teacher i ever had in my life. i took as many classes as i could with him, funny, practical and learned a lot ! legend
