Very nice guy, will review many times in class so u don't have to study that much, his tests are ok highly recomemded
Doesn't teach, can't understand what he's saying. Very disorganized and unclear. You won't learn anything in this class.
I will highly recommend this teacher, he is like the student's perfect teacher because he makes you understand the course very very well, and in grading he gives A's alot! This is the best teacjer in the chemistry department
Even that he has accent, but he is a good teacher. He is willing to help you out.
He has an annoying accent. That is the only thing wrong with this guy. Great teacher, gives many easy tests and quizzes. Teaches his class with a mix of powerpoint presentations and labs. He tries to be funny.
It's true that his accent is sometimes hard to understand, but you get used to it. He gives practice tests, and goes over concepts a lot. Even though chem 1a is pretty easy (which is why I slept a lot in class =) ), he goes over the material almost too thoroughly. I wish he taught 1b as well.
I was really afraid of taking organic chemistry b/c everyone said it was hard. But Dr. Baker makes it easy for you to understand. He has review ?'s and practice test which helps you a lot. He is ready to answer any questions you have. Even though he teaches on Sat. in normal session, I would recommend that you take him. You are sure to do well!!!
Nicest science professor ever. Wants you to do well. Helps you to that end. Keeps material basic....brings chemistry to understandable level. All lectures, review questions, practice tests available in his website. Everyone can get an A in this class, totally!
His accent is hard to understand. Very unorganized. Sometimes it is difficult to understand what he is talking about because he just talk about anything randomly. He ask question and answer them himslef without letting any student to response and then blame the class that you guys don't speak. Half of the time you can't understand his question.
He's very helpful. Clear lectures. If you don't understand anything just let him know and he'll help you. Easy exams. But a lot homeworks. I recommend taking your chem class with him.
Yes, yes, yes ... at times his accent is difficult to understand. The solution is to sit towards the front and LISTEN carefully. You'll get used to it. Sure, he is blunt, but he makes chemistry enjoyable. Relates lot of chemistry to the real world. Expect lots of homework, but you'll love him for the practice tests.
Good teacher to have. Honestly looks out for students and always tries to help. He has his own way of explaining things, but it's not too difficult to follow lectures. Prepared me well for CHEM1A.
Dr. Baker is hard to understand. His accent isn't that bad, but his explainations aren't very clear. The labs and homework are what will save you, as the tests are somewhat difficult. I'm typically a straight A student and this was the first class I got a B in. Overall he is decent, but pay very close attention and don't get lazy with studying.
Lectures are very clear and you are tested on what he lectures. The sample tests really help. He is very helpful and has many office hours if you need help. Chem isn't an easy subject, put in your time and you will get an A in his class. Best Chem teacher at Mission. His accent is NOT bad at all.
in lecture: talk about trivial things and finish the lecture in a hurry. in lab: left you alone to yourself and the lab book. if you go ask him, he said you need to figure it out yourself. in test: test on something that he never give lecture on, and the things that he did lecture, he give one question. the end: you and your effort will save the da
Rude, never responds to calls
This guy is rude and unprofessional...He NEVER responds to emails or voicemails, even if you are a top notch and polite student...How did this guy even become a professor? Not responding to students is just plain rude and cheap-->hello professor, we're here to learn, learn that!
i don't want to be rude, but when i took his class, i have to learn it myself. He won't waste his time helping you..Dr. Baker had one unique style.. HE WILL LOCK THE DOOR IF YOU ARE LATE TO HIS CLASS.. what is this? first grade.. lock the door.. his teaching is really bad and BORING.. i suggest you should not take his class...
I'm still taking this course but it's been great! He responds to my emails within hours and is very helpful. I'm in the hybrid chem 2 class so it's a little hard to comprehend since we're not in class as often but if you dedicate the hours needed for a 5 unit class it's worth it to be able to go to class 8 times in the semester.
Dr Baker is a nice person and good teacher. He cares about students; Available early in the morning, Fri & Sat. He also answers email when he should be relaxing at home It helps to do his Practice Tests He tries to ignore rude students who constantly talk in class and are habitually late to class; I'm glad when he doesn't let them walk all over h
I mostly get As but got a D in his class. You need to finish all OWL-online chemistry problems before his expiration dates Too many gliches with OWL Do all Practice Tests--many times. He's a nice guy
Difficult class. Rude to some. Nice to others. Most dropped. Not doing all OWL can lower your grade from a borderline A to a C. Chem dept must get kickbacks from thomsonlearning, cuz why do they push OWL so much. Too many problems with OWL to complete all assignments.
He treats the class like we're in middle school still.
He is very tough. Most of the students drooped from his class. Tests were extremely hard. A lot of assignments and homework. He never curves. Very tough. Don't take his class.
Difficult class. Tough teacher. Rude to some. Nice to others. Most dropped. Easy to get C,D. Extremely to get B. Unfair. don't take his class if you are not a superman in chemistry!!!
I just want to point this out. This was a part of the class description: "No student will be allowed the first day of class wearing sandals, THONGS, open toed shoes or shorts." What does your underwear have to do with a class? The guy is nuts. Teaches like we are still high school kids! Might as well find a job there.
I TOO just want to point out that THONGS probably means flip-flops. =)I like Dr. Baker and I'm suprised to see all the bad reviews. Chemistry is not an easy subject. I worked hard, went to his office hours, met with a tutor and my lab partner to study and got an A in the course -- and it was the online version. Put in the hours needed to do well
Nice to some really mean to others! Hard to pay attention to, long-winded and uninteresting lectures. Wish he was more precise with his lectures instead of going off on tangents that usually don't make sense. Unfortunately no one else teaches Chem 2 but him. Wouldn't take him unless you have to. Get a tutor!
Very condescending. Spends most of the time talking to the board, and giving off topic examples. Covers thing redundantly to the point of insanity. Doesn't do quizzes, just tests. Hard on attendance. Treats students like their still in junior high. If you don't like your intelligence being insulted, then you may want to do the on-line option.
Hes an awesome teacher, an incredible one! He was my first Chemistry teacher, and because of him I never realized how smart I was. Hes a cool teacher, IT TAKES HARD WORK to earn an A in his class. His class is NOT easy, you have to work hard. That is why I like him. Thank you Dr. Baker, you rule!
thick accents and hard to understand, rambles on and on, likes to quiz and test on subjects that he has not even mentioned in class. not a good teacher at all, im sure he is smart just not good at communicating and explaining topics. can be condescending especially because 30B "is a low level class" according to him. take someone else trust me!
WORST teacher I have ever had. He can't stay on topic for more than 5 mIn. He constantly rambles on about useless topics. Extremely unhelpful, always saying our class should go back to chem 30a. He isn't helpful, doesn't reply to e-mails. Always negative saying how he doesn't like chem 30b nearly as much as he likes chem 12 a and b.DONT TAKE HIM!!!
STRICT TEACHER, FORCES YOU TO UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL IF YOU WANT TO PASS HIS CLASS. JUST WANTS YOU TO RETAIN MATERIAL FOR YOUR CAREER AND DO WELL. CARES ENOUGH TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL+STAYS LATE ON HIS OWN TIME TO ENSURE YOU FINISH LAB CORRECTLY. VERY VERY DIFFICULT BUT U WILL BE ABLE TO LEAVE CHEMISTRY SAYING U UNDERSTAND!
Mr. Baker was a fair teacher. He is interested in giving everyone a chance if they choose to take it. I feel lucky having taken his class because I have avery good understaning if chemistry and feel that I am ready for higher learning in science (my major). I hope to have him again, he really got me interested.
i think this guy bought license to be teacher..worst teacher ever... dont take this guy if you are in Chemistry major. cuz really hard to get an A or B,..to bad, amen
This is the best teacher i have ever had!!!! He was my first chemistry teacher in my life. I skipped chemistry classes in high school so i decided to take chem. 002 and I've got an A. I have never opened the book ;( (Waste of money) because his explanations are so clear and homework in OWL were enough to practice. I highly recommend Dr.
Fairly easy grader. Very helpful. Keeps a lot of office hours and is easily accessible for additional help. Seems to really care about students and doing a good job.
His tests are not very easy, you have to work hard for it. But he's very helpful. He doesn't collect lab reports.
excellent instructor no way to fail class if you put effort into studying and paying attention in class. very interesting lectures gives info on chem application in real life situation absolutely the best chem teacher
Very helpful & determined to help you succeed. He offers tutoring to all Chem students, even if their not his students. A bit hard to understand but he tries his best. Grades are based on Tests & HW. Tests are hard. I dropped b/c I had difficulties w/ the subject, not because of him. But I will take him again because he is a very caring Professor.
I've been Dr. Baker's student for 3 semesters from Chem2 to Gen.Chem.He is fantastic.Explains even the most complex problems in the simplest way.Keeps class interesting & entertaining.Very helpful.Gives students free tutoring in his personal time You need to study but he gives you everything you need for you to get an A.An incredible Professor.
Great teacher, takes the time to explain things, even though it was a summer course it wasn't that painful. Rarely uses text book, provides good notes and practice quizes and exams.
He's willing to help you if you have any question. Read the book, go to class and you will be fine. He's the best teacher ever!!!!
This guy is a joke! MC has the worst chem teachers! He never hands anything back except exams, he rambles about useless crap during lectures, most of the questions on the exams he never covered in class, and he doesn't answer your questions. You have to learn on your own, and the new "work sessions" (2nd lab per week) are a waste of time. Stay away
Read this and you will thank me. This class was hard. you have to teach yourself. #1 habit he does is RAMBLES ALL OVER THE PLACE. He takes attendance for class and lab. so do NOT miss any class/lab. he will lock the door on you if you are late. how embarrassing is that. he catches people cheating too. Did i mention he RAMBLES ALOT? be prepared.
Grade comes down to that Final exam. Fail final = fail class, regardless of how well you do prior (YES in an OCHEM class). He's afraid to confront his students. I emailed him in regards to my grade & he never responded. He's ok at times, but he's unfair with grading & favors the smart students. Take with Dr Palmer when he teaches ochem. WAY BETTER!
This teacher is seriously a joke. I have never in my entire student life have seen such a teacher. He has asbolutely no idea about what he is teaching. Its is even hard to understand him due to his heavy accent. If he likes you you might have a chance to pass is class but if he doesn't, he will simply fail you. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
He sucks @#%!! dont take him!
Dr. Baker is a great professor. Organic chemistry is a tough subject and reading the textbook is absolutely key. Dr. Baker is willingly to help all students. Do the practice exams!
Dr. Baker is awesome. He is a very friendly and he makes Chemistry very fun and engaging. I never, ever have fallen asleep in his class. He is also very funny and he applies chemistry to issues in every day life.
Doesnt't really teach. gets annoyed if you don't understand. will not help. just tells you to go to tutoring. expects at least 15 hours of studying a week but doesn't give you anything to study. no homework. no connection between concepts. DON'T TAKE THIS GUY!
Took all the chem classes with him. Easiest teacher ever! His lectures suck, but if you work in group then you'll do well. Want an A and pad your record? take him. Want to learn? No.
Dr. Baker is an engaging lecturer. He will focus on key points in chemistry and to top it off, you don't even need to buy the textbook! All his lectures are on the board. Comparing his lectures to university lectures, this guy really teaches, and he teaches it well. Also, he gives lots of opportunities to better your grade.
I don't get why there are so many bad rating for this professor. I took my first chemistry course with Baker and I must say he really knows how to explain the hardest questions in simple ways in order to understand. You dont even need to buy the book, his powerpoints and practice tests provide you with everything you need to pass his course.
He is okay. His goes off on a tangent during his lectures and he puts things on the test there is no way you will know, but he will help you by dropping your worst test if you do well on the rest. Nice guy.
Learned most of the material through self study, googling OR my classmate. Doesn't focus on key points for exams. No interest in helping us & told me to google things that were in the labs. Gave practice tests w/ over 100 ?'s/chapter & each exam has 4 chapters! Got yelled at by a student for putting questions we never learned. Ppl failed that exam.
He is the best!!! a great teacher, I got a B but I still think he is great because he helped me all the time and was interesting the reason why I got a B was because I missed a couple labs. He truly is a great teacher and you will learn a lot! hes classes are NOT boring.
You will definitely learn from him, if you want a good grade you will have to earn it by studyin, he doesnt like when someone is late and misses labs so be there, this class is definitely easy if you study and you will be ready for 1B!
First teacher to ever make me drop. His lectures are difficult to understand, he gives no hw, tests are difficult, powerpoints help a little but not that much. Its hard to get an A in this class.
curves tests and gives you alot of oppertunites, really good teacher
good teacher and teaches well and offers alot of extra points on tests and help before class starts
If you cant learn on your own and or dont know alot of this stuff already then I wouldn't recommend Baker. Nice guy but not very organized or thorough with explaining things. Jumps around topics real fast and expects you to understand and retain it instantly. Tests are curved and practice tests are given. Didn't go over tests afterwards. Average.
Great Teacher. If you dont understand what he is teaching then you are not paying attention and not listening
In the beginning I thought he was very good. Later on he got harder and harder... Over all he is pretty good if you can understand him. He was 4 tests and a final.... If you want A's on his test, you have to study his notes and the practice tests online. We are supposed to get HW and Quizes every class... Buuut he actually never reallys does
Professor Baker is so great! Not like some professors,he wants all of his students get good grade and be successful.Take his class and you will not only get A but also learn a lot!
Dr. Baker is an AMAZING teacher! He is VERY helpful and offers a ton of help. Pay attention in class because his exams are based on lectures and the study guide questions he posts online. Ask a lot of questions, he is always willing to answer them. He is very KIND and SMART! Definitely my FAVORITE teacher at Mission College. He is highly respected.
Nice guy. You'll get used to the accent. His teaching is clear, but not always relevant to whats on the tests. If you didn't do chem very well before, then prepare to teach yourself (I had to teach myself). His tests are pretty hard and the practice tests dont help very much. If possible take someone else.
Work sessions are really helpful, lot of things to go through to ace the exams,Exams are pretty straight forward. He will give lot of extra credit on exams. But only if you work hard enough to study for his class.Easy A.4 tests,1 final. drops lowest if you improve your scores on every test.He gave us a chance to re do the second test :)
Teach yourself if you havent taken chem before 1A or if its been a while, he expects you to know those things. work sessions help. A lot of self teaching but this class is do-able.
He is AWESOME! he is somewhat hard but he is a really awesome Dr. he definitely likes it when you call him Dr. Also the practice test are very similar to the actual test, do them and you will succeed.
His teaching is hard to understand. Extremely confusing. He goes on too many tangents. His student teacher is more helpful. You have to teach yourself. His practice tests are not helpful.
mr. baker is a fair teacher, he explains the tpoic well, but his tests and homewwork are kinda hard. its best not to miss his lectures because he is strict on that. but, dont expect to pass if your not gonna show up
Dr. Baker knows his material. Attend every lecture and lab and without a doubt you will receive a good grade. Willing to help you out with any questions and let's you know what is going to be on the test with his reviews. Online practice tests are helpful and as well as his powerpoints. 20 MC & 4 FR, drops lowest test score if you improve.
He looks down on students who are not doing well. Although I did well, some of my classmates got a "talk" from him that went like "you should study". His office hour was for 20 mins?? His class is easy if you can study on your own and take good notes, there are quizzes, worksheets and tests, and a final. I just didn't like his attitude.
Lectures felt long and dull and he goes off on tangents a lot, reading through the book helped me more. Feels more like a high school teacher, very micromanagement. Still a good teacher overall, easy to approach, knows his stuff, and has an interest in learning. Pushes you to explore your majors application within chemistry, which is good
Do not take this class if you do not have to! I took the summer session class and even though I got an A, I wish I hadn't wasted my time & money. The class was taught as if we were high school students, not responsible adults. Gave a lot of irrelevant tangents, would put down students, called them out in front of class, locked inside room.
Dr. Baker's lectures are terrible; they are extremely boring, he goes off on tangents, and he will often repeat the same examples over and over again. His tests, however, are really really easy since they are almost the same as the practice tests he provides, he is not a harsh grader, and because of the curve. This class was an easy A for me.
Dr. Baker knows his chemistry. His lectures aren't the best. I suggest going thru the PowerPoint he has online for a better understanding. Do his practice tests! They are just like the quizzes and tests he gives. He locks the door, don't be late. In lab, few labs but lots of worksheets covering the chapters. Cumulative final. Didn't use the book.
Wonderful, respected professor. he is giving clear lectures. always ready to assist you and help you with your questions. He is not really hard on labs. but you would better know your stuff. I strongly recommend him for General and Organic Chemistry.
yes this organic ch class not a essay class. you have to put time and work on it . I think Dr baker used fantastic method to teach student, not complected but efficient and useful. I took my genera chemistry in west valley I learned nothing I wish I had taken my class at mission with dr Baker.I strongly recommend organic and general chemistry
I took him in the summer, and he gives a quiz every morning before lecture starts. As long as you stay updated with the material, they are easy. He has practice tests online that mimic the real tests, so study those and you'll be fine. You have to try, but not too hard to get an A. He gives quizzes after every "work session" too. Has a thick accent
Baker wants you to succeed. His lectures are very informative, everything he teaches you is what you need to know for the tests. He repeats concepts to help you study. His tests in ochem covered the basics, nothing on there was crazy. He helps you to build a good foundation in ochem12A. No homework besides lab reports. He is a cool person.
He's a nice guy. There are quizzes when class start so study them. Ask him for help, he will explain it to you. Do the practice test and lab reports as well. Do all of these and you can get an A. Sign up for his class, he doesn't take waitlist.
He isn't the best at explaining concepts during lecture, but his tests are very easy. On test days, we watch videos during lab and are required to write a 3 page essay on them. His labs are really easy. If you did well in high school chemistry, this class will be an easy A.
Dr. Baker is a sweet man. He tries very hard to help students with difficulty in his class. I wouldn't recommend him for Chem major students. He's not the best at explaining the material and he goes off in tangents about unrelated topics. Not suitable for students who want to learn in class. He spends many extra hours with students for extra help.
Al Baker made Chemistry bearable. He has really dry humor that most people don't realize. You don't need the book just write down what he has on the board. He gives pop quizzes, 3 tests, homework, and a final. He goes over the same thing multiple times to ASSURE you understand it. Maybe study, because I didn't and it was hard.
Instead of handing you information, he gives you ways of gaining said information. This allows students to gain a more in depth understanding of the subject.
this is literally the worst professor I have ever seen
This professor is the worst. He doesnt teach at all, he mumbles, and you cant understand his notes. I would never recommend this teacher.
He is the worst professor I have even had in my entire life. I taught my self everything even after attending every class, recording all his notes and reading every page of the textbook. Never take this professor!!!!
lol dont take this guy
He is a terrible professor. His lectures are very hard to understand. He says to not use the textbook but the tests have things form the textbook. I wouldnt recommend him.
I think my other review got removed, so i'll post it again to help out my fellow students. This man cannot teach, which would i'd be normally be okay with, only that you are REQUIRED to attend his incoherent lectures. There is a required text (for chm 2), but it is never used. Crash chemistry course on youtube will help you if you need to take him.
Dr. Baker is great! He is super easy if you are willing to put some effort-he really wants you to succeed. There are 6 exams total-including two midterms and a final cumulative exam. All of the exams are super easy and he literally gives the same problems from the practice tests he provides-along with answers. He also gives a lot of extra credit.
-he will teach you the basic but on the test, it's advance (not like what he taught in class), so you will need to study by yourself at home -he will deduct points for attendance and if you miss one class, you will fail -pop quiz all the time and right before a test. -he doesn't know how to teach and change topic a lot. -I don't recommend him
Lots of work so be prepared. Just basic CHEM stuff but he gets off topic and talks a lot. Lots of quizzes and tests. If you don't show up you will fail for sure. He takes attendance. If you take him, good luck.
Prof Baker seems to care about teaching but is not actually good at it. Unfortunately I had him the first sem COVID-19 hit so he really struggled with figuring out how to teach online. His lectures are mostly straightforward and there was like 4 hw assignments total. 3 total tests including a midterm and final.
He doesn't know how to teach/work/use tech. Less than 3 min he would start talking something else. Exams are easy. So it's a negative circle if you're a science major-easy A but you don't understand what's going on, and nobody noticed what happened due to all the paperwork seems fine. If it's in classroom, I cannot sit there to waste my life!
he is awful
Don't blame the online format, if it's in classroom I must withdraw immediately. He should consider doing something else if he truly wanna help students.
When I enrolled the prof name was not him. I'm trapped, no session to switch. He talks off topic every minute. Choose other class if you could. Multiple pages here helps him get better reviews.
He gets distracted very easily and will go on tangents about unrelated things for long periods of time. One class, it took him half an hour to start the lecture because he was probably telling us to not cheat or break the law like he always does. I took his summer course online and it was very hard to concentrate and I didn't deserve my A grade.
Really nice man, but he gets distracted a lot. You have a quiz every week. Quizzes are no more than 6 questions worth a few points each. He is not the best at explaining the concepts well. It was confusing to follow along in class honestly. Oh, and his tests use Proctorio (room scan, camera, share screen). Miss one class, u fall behind. Good Luck.
He is amazing, and a super sweet person. I have learned a lot from him in class. If you want to make an A go to office hours and he will help you
Dr. Baker was wonderful and he will help you if you have any questions I recommend him.
Dr. Baker likes to lecture a lot. I took this class on Zoom, so I muted the volume when he started to ramble or repeat things. If you ask him a question, he often will give you a long-winded answer when a yes/no would work. Not the best communicator. Little issues like these are irritable but tolerable. He is a nice guy. Online > in-person IMHO.
This professor was not the best in an online class. He has long tangents that do not relate to the coursework. The class itself is not overly complicated but he does not seem to stay focused on the agenda and it's hard to stay motivated. He also does not respond to any messages sent outside of the online class time.
Goes off on tangents all the time, hard to understand, but pay attention and you'll be fine. Don't take him if you aren't good with chemistry/science in general.
Prof. Baker shows that he cares about his students. He gives us occasional mini-lectures in class about real-world things and talks to us like a friend. Not that accessible via email but he does offer a lot of office hours.
He certainly knows what he's talking about when it comes to chemistry, and I can't deny that he's passionate about it, but he's not the best at teaching it: he goes off on tangents for easily 2/3 of the lecture, and only really explains things one way. An excellent choice if you're used to self-study, otherwise try someone else.
Dr. Baker is a really sweet man who cares about his students, but he really isn't the best teacher. I taught myself through this class. Tests were pretty easy because they were similar to the homework and practice tests. There also is a lot of extra credit.I wouldn't recommend him if you struggle to understand chemistry, otherwise, he's an easy A.
Spent 8 weeks of summer taking this class where I absolutely learned nothing. He goes off topic every 5 mins so it's extremely difficult to stay focused. Didn't even show his face once throughout the course. His work sessions are super time-consuming and honestly.. just don't take this class.
Dr. Baker overall is very verbal about how much he cares for his students. However, it seems that everyone else that has done a review has picked up the fact that he indeed does ramble at times with no clear message being portrayed. Dr. Baker also fails to put his examples into different perspectives for his students, so be ready to teach yourself.
Graded mainly by tests and the few homework papers you receive. Confusing if you get behind and notes/lectures are hard to understand
literally no official deadlines set for any assignments, does not ever upload grades unless it's attendance, and has never responded to a single email.
He seems like a super sweet person, but he can't teach. He takes attendance. He often gets off topic, and doesn't teach the lecture itself. Multiple quizzes, midterm and final. They're a mix of multiple choice and fill in. He never responds to emails. Don't take him, you won't learn a single thing, and will definitely have trouble in future classes
Dr. Baker is overall a sweet person but teaching is not his strength. I can't understand his accent and would never take him again. I had to teach myself everything.I can't concentrate in his class because I can't understand anything and he changes the topic every 10-15 minutes not even about the chemistry he just starts talking about random stuff.
Do not take this class unless you are good at self-studying. Dr. Baker goes off-topic in his lectures every 5-10 minutes; however, he is a nice person overall and if you attend office hours/read the textbook/do practice problems, you will be fine. I would recommend watching organic chemistry tutor youtube videos, which are really helpful.
He is a nice person. Will always give students a second chance to prove themselves. Lectures are so long without breaks. Attendance is mandatory. He gives extra credit.
I took this class in-person during the Spring 2022 semester. Professor Baker cannot teach at all even though you're required to attend every class. He never updates Canvas and he never replies to emails. If you want to pass with an A, study the sections of each CHAPTER REVIEW TEST. Use O Chem Tutor & Tyler Dewitt on YouTube. Work hard, you'll pass.
He is ok. Lectures are kind of fast and disorganized (so is his Canvas btw), but you'll be fine if you have a decent chem base. He goes on a lot of tangents. Labs are fun, so try to make friends in lab period. Some of his tests are tough, especially the multiple choice. Study with the review tests, and don't wait till the last day to start.
Goes off topic a lot during lectures. The weekly labs and work sessions weren't too terrible. You'll probably get a better understanding of chapters through YouTube rather than the lecture. Tests are not pleasant, definitely go through the review tests he puts up on Canvas.
The lectures (copy and paste from textbook) were out of place all the time (changing topics). For the labs we've done, he left the room most of the time. For the tests, quizes, and finals, they're from the the practice/review. The ONLY thing graded are the tests while everything else is ignored, just completetion. Whatever you do, DO NOT take him.
Nowhere to submit assignments, tells us to send it to him via canvas inbox within 48 hours. Not that it matters anyway, because none of the assignments count towards your grade -ONLY TESTS DO. Did not update grades in canvas at all after the first week of attendance. Never responds to emails. Lectures fast and rambles too much. Avoid at all costs.
In my opinion he is not the best when it comes to lecturing, often going off on fairly long tangents on subjects that don't relate to the topic being taught. Much of the learning in my experience had to be done by myself out of class as he doesn't exactly do the best at explaining, rather he does examples we have to figure it out as he does them.
He is a nice person but he goes on tangents all time and doesn't get through the material. He just tells the same 5 stories like 100 times and doesn't explain the material well. The only way I got through this class was going to tutoring in the Academic Center.
Dr. Baker clearly cares about chem but as a professor, he goes on random tangents that make it incredibly hard to focus and when he does get back on topic, he moves so fast its impossible to follow. Never happened to me but he often snaps his fingers in students faces as well as slams his hand on tables to get their attention. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Baker is a nice person, but his teaching style can be a challenge. Attending office hours, using resources like the Organic Chemistry Tutor on YouTube, and practicing problems are key to succeeding. Unstuck ai can also help with study prep.
Lectures were very long and filled with lots of random tangents. The canvas set up isn't the most organized and I never received my final grade. Half the class ended up dropping, and before the drop date was the only time he emailed me my grade. Chem is already a tough class and having a tough teacher definitely made it worse
Professor Baker was truly amazing. Although he's now retired, I carry his lesson with me every day: “Everything is not hard, just challenging.”
