she liked the bad papers and disliked the good ones...if it wasnt what she wanted, youre grade seemed to be a bit lower. not very helpful on her responses.
This teacher patronizes her students.
This teacher is really easy, as long as you do the stupid work, you will do find. and she is also very hepful. i do recommend her. especially for those who like turning late work in.
SHE IS VERY EASY, AS LONG AS YOU DO THE WORK, YOU WILL GET AN A. SHE EVEN ACCEPTS LATE WORK. SHE IS ALSO VERY HELPFUL.
Do all the work, very easy to get an A, accepts late work too!
she is ok, i hated the readings though
she was really easy. however her feedback was not helpful at all.
Seemed as though she favored the theatre students and it really showed in her grading. She disliked papers that were pretty good. Don't waste your time, regardless of how much work you put in, your probably end up with a B-
Very hard to please. her taste can spoil the 104 experience completely. if there is one thing explored enough there's always something else you've done wrong.
This teacher seemed to like the bad papers that were written like 6th graders and hated the papers that were clearly college level. She definitely had favorites in class and if she didn't like your writing style, you were screwed. Don't take her class!
ok she makes the class feel like they are retarded sometimes, but at least she knows how to teach. you write alot of short papers but they are really easy and sometimes very interesting. do the work and you will be fine
This class is VERY easy. The essays are short and simple. But she does tend to give out a lot of busy work. She's very sarcastic and hates when you turn in rough drafts that haven't be "reworked," meaning completely rewritten. I wouldn't call her nice or friendly, but she'll you with drafts. This cl
I laughed when I read someone's comment about making you feel retarded b/c its true. We'd be discussing a book and if she didn't like what you had to say, she'd give you this stare like you were a moron and then she'd say "Okayyy..." anyone else? She couldn't have been more rude. She's easy though.
The class was EXTRA EASY. Short papers. A lot of busy work. Like everyone else said, she does make u feel stupid sometimes. But the class is definitely a no brainer. U'd have to be a dumb ass not to get an A.
Not nice Lady. She was blowing gum bubbles in my face while reading through one of my papers. Also, I'm not sure that the best way to have student get excited a class is to start it by saying " ok, I know this class is a pain, but everybody has to take it". Please... we are adults here.
I wouldn't recommend this teacher. She's not helpful and makes you feel stupid. When people talk she makes these weird faces. The class isn't too difficult but it does get boring especially in the beginning when she talks and gives unnecessary pointless homework.

She definitley has her favorites! If you come to class and do your work, you'll be fine. It's nice that there are 3 papers instead of having 1 big one. Even though sometimes she would make the students feel stupid by the expression on her face, she's really not intimidating.
This teacher seriously Sucks at life! She should not be teaching as a professor at this university. She is unorganized and not helpful. She makes students feel like they are incapable of answering questions or forming sentences in a paper. I've never hated a teacher so much. Don't take her class!!
she is very hard too much work, too much hw. you will get hw every day. very hard correction. she will get your mind cazy.you need to spend atlease 15 hour in a week to do her work. i am seniour, i really know how to to write but she still gien me a bad grade. lot to read. if you really like to get screwed your self take her. warning do not take he
She assigns a ton of reading and writing work-- too much. Often the assignments are unclear and you end up having to rewrite your paper. Not a bad personality, but she grades hard and never gives you a break on homework. On days she has Jewish holidays she assigns extra work which I found stupid and unfair. Avoid unless you love homework.
This teacher assigns WAYYY too much homework. Honestly 1-3 papers due EVERY class. The papers are long and very unclear. Only take this teacher if you love writing because thats all you do.
This teacher is a Klutz. She is very unclear on her homework assignments and gives a lot of homework everyday. Most of the time you will have to redo the assignments because she does not explain them well. Also, she thinks everyone's opinion makes no sense, and she gives a wierd look when you comment on the readings. Avoid taking this teacher!
The other people writing reviews here really don't know what they're talking about. Of course there will be a lot of reading and writing -- it is an English class. I thought she was very helpful and gives ample opportunities to succeed in her class. Nice lady, sometimes a little crazy, but I'd reccommend her to anyone.
she was really helpful and made sure everyone understood what she assigned/was talking about. assigns writing, its not that hard. you just have put in a little effort and if you dont understand, shes easily approachable and gladly helps. a little different, but still a good teacher - would recommend her.
take her. she seems difficult at first, homework kind of pointless, but is willing to take the time to tell you what she wants for an A paper. worthwhile.
Pretty lenient with when things are due. Actually makes you read St. Martins & Green Guide. Helpful. Kinda weird.
She is awesome! She has a lot of office hours outside of class and she'll read your essay before it's due. She is also very understanding and even cancelled class when we suggested it! Three essays on one person, kind of a lot of work, but you can pick someone youre interested in so it's fun.
She's really pick about her papers. Also, it was a bit hard to keep track of the deadlines, because the syllabus kept changing and was disorganized. It really felt like papers were do every week (for the night class). I wouldn't say she's awful, but I'm not actively seeking her out. I put in mediocre effort and got a B+.
She's a fun person to learn from and always picks interesting topics
loved her! i had her for a night class, but it never felt long. she was entertaining and related really well with the students. she was always available for extra help. i would definitely take another class from her.
SOme of the things that they say about this teacher is true but this was a great class. I had a lot of fun. There was a lot of work but it was worth it.
I loved going to this class. She is funny and makes even boring things fun. I would go back to this class in a heartbeat!
I honestly cannot see how Berg Seeley has received any positive reviews. She. Doesn't. Teach. She is not a teacher in any sense of the word. I've learned absolutely nothing from her. She 's a professional time-waster. She kills an hour and half with useless conversation, and then you leave dumber than before.
She drove me absolutely crazy. I do not appreciate being treated like a 12-year-old, and I do not understand why she thinks it is appropriate to treat college students as such. I dropped the class three weeks in simply because I could not deal with her.
salli means well but fails miserably at her job.she is one of the worst prof i have ever had. i dreaded going to class because its all busy work and stupid conversation. She is very close minded. You HAVE to conform to her style of writing to do well. You almost feel like your constantly being parented and begged to participate.
I had discover with her. The actual immersion week was interesting, but we always had an overload of readings. The rest of the quarter had too many readings as well. The class discussions were pretty boring because no one could get into any of the lit because there was too much. She is a little understanding.
I have never disliked someone more. She is completely biased towards theatre kids and it's very obnoxious.
She should probably get that attitude checked. I hated going to that class, she was mean! but it was very easy for 104.. only 3 short papers all on the same person and i used the same 5 sources for all of them.
I don't know why she has such bad reviews. I love Salli, and so did everyone in my class! Sure, there were a lot of readings, but what do you expect? You signed up for a class called "Contemporary Literature in Chicago," duh. The readings are interesting and immersion week was a blast. Definitely recommended. :)
She's a good teacher who makes lessons clear and writing interesting. Only issue is don't get on her bad side cause she will NOT let it go. Other than that... pretty good class.
There is not much homework, but the essay drafts and presentation. She is flexible and appreciates participation.
True, homework was minimal, but when doing drafts...be prepared to print out A LOT of copies. Easy class but be warned she is nuts!
Salli was super helpful inside and outside the class with recommendations for further reading, etc. The work was average and there was a lot of reading. You're pretty much expected to talk about the reading, too, so go prepared. Ooh, she also accepts late work, which is a huge bonus.
The Professor is over the top in terms of personality. There's a lot of work for this class and almost every week there some sort of work to be turned in. Usually we go through 6 drafts just for a lame essay about what we like. All of the essays are pointless and from the class, I learned very little.
There is a lot of reading and a lot of homework for this class, be warned! She also makes you buy A TON of books. She is nice enough, but she can be a bit nuerotic at times. She has passion for the content, but she gets really nit picky about things which is annoying. She also makes you print out everything, so make sure you are prepared for class.
Horrible teacher. She assigns a lot of pointless papers on pointless topics & weird or pointless readings. She is not open minded at all. If she doesn't like your opinion on something she will give you a bad grade. Her comments are borderline rude. She doesn't post grades on D2L or pass back assignments. You never know your grade or how to improve.
Salli is an interesting prof-she assigns wonderful readings and usually engages the class in good discussions. However, she assigns a silly amount of busy work throughout the quarter, which is irritating. She can be very kind and insightful, yet at other times she would be very short-tempered and even rude. She is quirky, most definitely, but cool.
Not sure why anyone would give this professor a bad score. I've taken her for two different classes and I learned so much from each. She does assign more work than the average professor, but she gives good feedback and doesn't give you more than you can handle. She's very down to earth and funny. She will really help your writing. Take her class.
She was probably the rudest person I've ever met. Acts like you have no other classesnothing else to do in your life but immerse yourself in whatever she deems important (not even necessarily the course material).
She's a little different. Her personality is an acquired taste. She assigns a lot of readings for each week and the final paper was ehh. She is quirky and a little ditzy sometimes.
There was a lot of outside work, but other than that what I really hated was that if you don't agree with her on certain things she literally doesn't leave the topic until you give in and say yes I agree. She doesn't understand that others have different opinions and it bugged me that we couldn't have different opinions without her judging.
Quite thoroughly unenjoyable and unpleasant.
Personally, I took Professor Seeley for WRD 103 & 104 - and I have to say I warmed up to her. In the beginning she may seem difficult or course, but when you get down to the work she really does care about making her students better writers and preparing them for their academic careers. She's a great professor for first years - highly recommend.
I dreaded going to this class. She assigns crazy amounts of busy work as if we have no other class but hers. Some of the assignments have nothing to do with what we are learning. All of the assignments were basically the same which made the class very boring and redundant.
Salli has an incredible heart and is willing to work closely with students in order to make sure they're achieving the goals and standards she set for them. She cares deeply about her students as well as the material she teaches. I had her my freshman year and the class legitimately changed my life.
I had Professor Seeley for my Chicago Quarter Explore class. Although she did take us on some fun excursions outside the classrooms, she assigned us with A TON of random writing assignments and graded them thoroughly. She also had very strict attendance policy and she was very opinionated during class discussions. Be ready to write A LOT!
I'm so lucky to have had Professor Salli for my Chicago Discover Class last fall quarter. Apart from being a lovely human being she's so smart and knowledgeable when it comes to literature and she's more than happy to listen. She does make you work a little for your grade but it's all to help make you blossom into a real student. Highly recommend!
A lot of reading and analyzing a book. but the class was fairly easy. just participate and you'll be fine. she's really nice and open minded. cool class she helps a lot too. wants you to succeed
Prepare for lots of redundant assignments that aren't graded for a while. Papers are assigned for every reading done. No textbooks needed, only novels and don't bother buying them as the class will only spend less than a week's worth of classes on them. During discussions, prof has no regard for any opinions that differ from her own.
Don't take this explore class. Basically a paper due every week and she grades them with bias. Such a redundant class. She will take up common hour which is not part of her class and outings aren't during class so they will interfere with your schedule. Take a discover class. We read about 6 novels and there's a final paper that's 5 page min.
The book that this class is on is really interesting but her teaching style is literal hell. Sign up if you want to be talked down to and nagged on to put electronics away. She never lectures and instead wastes all ur class time making you do unnecessary group work based off the homework that she gives EVERY NIGHT & A research paper every week.
Professor Seeley's class isn't hard at all. The things we read in there were actually really good. You just have to beware of the contract based grading system. Recommended: Please do your 3 mandatory office hours meet-ups sooner rather than later. I did that, & everything worked out fine. Some people didn't & they ran into trouble.
I honestly loved this class!! I loved the readings she chose for us to read. The class discussions were fun because the readings provoked some interesting thinking. Although I do remember having a few papers, she really sets you up for the final project. I wish I could take this class again!!
There is a fair amount of reading that can be tedious, but a lot of it was really interesting and most of the work from it was just small and large group discussions. About 3 papers, but shorter than one long one at the end. Gives feedback on all the papers if you want. This makes it very easy to improve a paper and receive a good grade.
This class was so much fun! It may sound boring but the reading provoked interesting discussions in class which this course is based on. Grading was based on a B contract so if you fulfill all the requirements you have nothing to worry about. She is also very helpful with papers and gives you chances to fix them up
Professor Berg-Seeley is one of those teachers who helps to make the economical burden on college seem worth it. If you enjoy remaining stagnant in your growth as a student, I would advise against taking her class. However, if you enjoy growing as a student, and more importantly a human being, you would be truly missing out to not take her class.
Prof. Seeley is incredible. She's well versed in everything taught during class. She wants to help you & she's funny. None of the assignments are long or difficult & she accepts late work. You'll read interesting short stories and discuss them during lecture. I learned a lot and had fun. Not too much hw. Easy A+, and a potluck at the end!! :)
I would definitely take this class again. Salli is very accessible outside of class and worked with me a lot. She really sets you up for your final paper. Be prepared for lots of reading and lots of essays. I would definitely say there is a lot of homework but it is enjoyable!! - definitely not a class you can slack off in :)
I really loved taking her class. She treats her students with respect and values everyones contributions. You definitely have to work hard, but I found our assignments enjoyable and well worth the effort. I learned a lot in this class and I think it will all be applicable to my life for a long time. Its a really great class.
she was rude and Im not sure if she meant to come off that way but she assigned a lot of papers as well. she gave us a lot of busy work which I felt was unecessary. if u take her, be prepared to read a lot because she made us read 3 books for the explore Chicago class. One of the books was 400 pages. Its a lot of work and she grades pretty hard.
This professor was very disrespectful and rude during explore lit online. She assigns a lot of work and in this class you are required to read 3 books. The class had the heaviest work load out of all of my classes which is very unnecessary because it is supposed to be one of your easier classes. She even called one of my papers redundant
This class was my most busiest class with a good amount of reading. The teacher was a bit of a harder grader when it came to the writing assignments. Overall, yes the main topic of the class was very interesting but there were so many dead moments during class discussions. I wouldn't make this my first choice as an explore chicago class to take...
The material explored in class definitely required a fair bit of thought, but only because these matters were reflective of current events. While the course was challenging, it was also interesting. Salli went above and beyond to help accommodate me and help me work through the issues I faced. Her care for her students is undeniable. A great prof!!
Professor Seeley was a fantastic professor. The readings she chose for class and the work that she assigned felt relevant to the topic at hand (multiculturalism) an dI learned a lot. It is impossible to "hide" in lectures, but the material and the way she presents it is so engaging that I wanted to participate (and i consider myself introverted!)
Professor Berg-Seeley assigns the most homework that I have ever had in a class, which was the hard part. There were about 4 to 6 assignments every week--and they weren't quick. However, to make up for this, she isn't the toughest grader ever--as long as you do the assignments, you should be good with her!
I really liked this class. Sure, theres a lot of reading, but the reading was interesting and worked with the class. She is very excited to teach and you can tell she wants us to all do well. Not only in her class, but as individuals. Lots of group work but she helped us learn how to work well with others.
She put a lot of care into teaching us and she really cared about us as students and people. She was tough and funny, just don't take things personally. She grades unconventionally but was available outside of class if we had questions about anything. As long as you do your best, read, and communicate with her you should be fine. 10/10 recommend!
Salli is very unintentionally snarky and rude with her comments. I don't feel like I got a lot out of this class. there is a ton of reading, which I don't really mind usually, except in her case. Her feedback is not super helpful either, and she is not very easily approachable.
Prof. Berg-Seeley is one of the more rude educators I have had in a very long time. she did not make me feel comfortable coming to her with any concerns or complications due to her blatant/blunt rudeness to just about anyone. As for the workload, more than half of my assignments from the quarter came from this class; but it became easier overtime.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Professor Berg-Seeley has been a terrible professor and is rude 24/7. She has this voice that sucks the life out of the room, creating a dreadful atmosphere. Her snarky attitude is completely unnecessary, along with the excessive work given.
Seely can be particular & grades unconventionally but is deeply passionate & knowledgeable. Facilitates engaging class conversation.Has a tough sense of humor but cares about her students, is approachable if you're having issues. Lots of reading-but if you're interested in American history/politics/communism, a super interesting class- I recommend.
She definitely can be a little snarky, but overall I really enjoyed her as a professor. M/C American Writers was a really interesting class, and all the readings were engaging and led to a lot of good conversations. This class is mostly talking to each other, and doing short responses to readings before each class. Very manageable amount of work.
This professor will give you way too much homework for an explore class. She is rude and pretentious and does not value your time. Save yourself the trouble and pick a different class.
Lots of homework
Do not take this class. Probably one of the explore classes with the most homework and readings assigned. The professor is always rude and treats you as a Middle Schooler. One of the worst experiences I've had so far in college was in this course
Salli Berg may seem a little annoying at first but she really does grow on you, most of the negative ratings are of students who honestly don't try. There is a lot of homework, however, none of it is really hard nor time-consuming. As well, if you put in effort and do the work assigned you receive an automatic B at the end of the quarter.
This is a fun Explore Class. We explore the city and connect references from books to places in Chicago. There is a decent amount of work, but if you don't fall behind and turn in work, this is an easy A. Salli is very understanding and makes the class lively with her comments and wit, and it makes the discussion part of the class entertaining.
Consistent reading, but they aren't very long at all. 2 small writings each week, few papers here and there. Really passionate about her topic, just wants students to be engaged. Make a few insightful takeaways regarding readings and you'll be alright. Just be nice and show decent participation and you should get an A. Overall low-mid stress course
In a social awareness class, she made several microaggressive comments. The grading scale is ridiculous, using ok+, ok/ok, ok- instead of A-F. How are we in college and you're grading like that? You don't know your final grade until its too late because of this. She's very passive-aggressive. I don't understand her good ratings at all. DON'T TAKE!
SBS genuinely does care about her students and is very engaging, but can come of condescending at times. LOTS of readings, majority of them are "short" stories or poems, but there are lengthier readings that are expected with little turn around. 2-3 weekly assignments. Be prepared tot talk in small groups and to the class for daily discussion.
Salli Berg-Seeley's LSP111 class is quite demanding, with a heavy workload and strict grading. While the material can be engaging, the professor can be blunt and not very accommodating. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for study prep.
Very weird and confusing grading system, hard grader. Has a very strong attitude and can be nice at times but can also snap in an instant. Take any other professor offered
Very strict grader with a ridiculous grading system. Is very micro aggressive towards everything on assignments, and can snap in class. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Lots to say but I'll keep it very simple. Do not take this class. Professor does not like anybody and is very aggressive and disrespectful. Workload is WAY too much for an explore Chicago class. Hard grader and grading system makes no sense. Dreaded going to class and I'm sure nobody wanted to be there. Biggest mistake I've ever made.
Many of the people saying they didn't enjoy Salli's Explore Chicago class are those who expected an easy A. There are a lot of readings, but none of the responses are terribly intensive and can be completed thoroughly in a few sentences. She does a great job helping you get adjusted to college life and I would absolutely recommend taking her class.
Honestly, the course load wasn't that much it was just a few weekly readings that were very short and writing about them. It's not a class you can just scrape by without doing the readings which I guess is why people don't like it. She's also very sarcastic but if you like that sense of humor, it's fun. She genuinely does care about her students.
She provided many opportunities for us in this course to learn new things and follow interests. For example, during my first year she secured for us the opportunity to meet Kevin Coval and get our copies of his book of poetry signed by him. She is very communicative, and if you put yourself to meet her halfway she will be more than willing to help.
Honestly enjoyed this class due to the material being interesting, but grading system was way too harsh for an elective class. To keep it short, take literally any other class other than this. If you are not the public speaker type, do not take this class as many other LSP112's will be lenient and patience towards students who have trouble speaking
Probably the worst professor I've ever had
Professor Seely is a very tough grader and uses a grading method I have never seen anyone use in my years at school. She uses the work OK and depending if you get a plus or an exclamation mark or just a plain OK, that is your grade. Very weird grading system and I don't recommend anyone to take her class if they want a Locked A in LSP.
I actually wanted to cry after having class with her. Going to class was the most dreadful thing I had to do twice a week because of how annoying she is. Her field trips are awful, she gives us so much unnecessary work, and everything she does is so boring.
Professor Seeley is a great teacher who clearly loves her work and knows Chicago well. She gives a lot of homework—I joked it felt like three classes—but the assignments are manageable if you're not afraid of plenty of reading and writing.
