Crazy grading, boring observations, avoid like a disease!
AVOID HER!
Just run. Just run away.
she is horrible she is mean and oppinionated and grades without logic the worst
The Robin to Magnus's Batman. NOBODY liked her. And she was a horrible teacher
Gives Ds for writing that gets As in every other class
by the end of the semester you'll want to use your textbook as a projectile!
Hard, inconsiderate.... Work that deserves a B will get you an F DO NOT TAKE HER
I would rather have a labotomy than take another class with her!!!!

as far as feminists go, she is by far one of the worst...don't take her class EVER, especially if you're male

An unhappy wman, blinded by her hatred of Israel
If you've got a brain in your body she is an ace teacher. She doesn't suffer fools gladly and who can fault her for that? So she's opinionated about Israel and feminists - this is college, folks, you can be articulate too.
DONT EVERRR take her class!!!! especially if u are a male... she HATES guys... and really had grader... not to mention a huge ****... so basically save urself the trouble... and the bad grade and DO NOT take her!!!
Just one of those miserable professors, you know the type. Very unfriendly and looks down upon you if you don't know everything in the world. No qualms about insulting someone. Very unfair grader, definitely not on the same level as her colleagues.
SHE IS A DIE HARD FEMINIST. She hates the men in the class, does not explain your grades. And thinks she has more problems that anyone else in this world.

She is the worst f'in teacher I've ever had. She gives out at least 6 hrs. of hw a night...all reading. She expects you to write a paper a week, at least 2 main papers a semester, and read 5 books from cover to cover in a 3-month span.
First of all, understand that being male makes this class harder. Secondly, understand that every topic, no matter how unrelated, will ALWAYS, somehow link back to feminism and women's rights. Oh, and NEVER forget your book...
She is the best prof in the world, she freaking rocks, I dont know why all these "guys" hate her, Im a guy and aced her class 3 times, in 3 diff courses, and know of many guys that have also, perhaps these people were dumb jocks, of course they
Miserable, incompetent, and barely in control of her subject manner.
she doesn't hate men as much as everyone likes to pretend. it's just easier to claim that they fail because of gender rather than lack of work...
It's true she's a feminist, but she doesn't hate men, she hates herself, and she makes you suffer for it! I sometimes doubt her knowledge of history too.
I'm a boy... Professor Charnow was my adviser... was never anything but nice to me... her classes were great... readings were great
makes subject matter interesting by tying it to current events....but be prepared to write
i hate this woman. she is a feminist and plays very very high favorites. I think that her teaching manor is horrible and i will never ever take another course with her involved in or around it.
she is awful! she expects you to participate but then just stares at you like you're an idiot when you're finished talking, it's a very uncomfortable atmosphere in a class that shouldn't be. she's a tough grader and extremely unfriendly and rude.
Don't EVER take her class. She is absolutley terrible! Her grading is totally unfair. You only do good when your "opinion" matches hers. She make you feel like an idiot. She keeps her classes 10-15 minutes late every day. She needs to be f
The class was fairly easy. She gives approximately 6-8 small papers (2pg response) to the readings, so yes you do have to read or pay really close attention in class and take notes. She is a hard grader (grammar & papers), but you can make it through.
Insane. She's a raving feminist, and you had better be too or else. Watch out because she'll come in late every day complaining about traffic, but you better not be late or she'll start with the scathing comments. Oh and always holds class late too
The most feminist teacher there is, turns everything into an issue against women. you read about 4 books during the semister. I was barely able to pull a C, only because i participated in class. Unless you're name is Hemmingway, don't expect an A on paper
Expect to read, write and analyze a good deal. If you are lazy or too stupid to appreciate historical scholarship, dont take her classes. Discussions are lively and very informative. She doesnt lecture, but you still learn a lot through participation and hearing your peers. Can you handle it?
I have no idea how students can defend this execrable teacher as if she were an upholder of "standards" or "real scholarship." That's not the problem. She's not all that hard, but she's an awful, narrow-minded, arrogant, hypocrite who uses the classroom to spread her pathetic political fantasies.
This prof. is amazing. I love her to death, because she is a great prof, enthusiastic about what she teaches, and is always there to help you out. Yes people did bad...but the people that did were usually lazy and deserved it, take her, she's really an amazing prof.
I can't figure out how this woman is teaching at a university. No difference of opinion allowed, and if you attempt to disagree watch out; she will make you feel lower than an ant. Also, a raging feminist, and goes off on odd tangents. AVOID IF YOU VALUE YOUR GPA!!!!!
she is def arogant, but the material that she teaches is very interesting and makes sense. She is very knowledgable and knows what she is taking about. There is a lot of reading and papers which are annoying but other than that i think she is a good prof.
She is so mean! she doesn't value anyones opinion except her own. she gives students dirty looks when they talk and is just in love with herself. very tough teacher. 6 short response papers, 2 long papers, and hard mid and final. you also have to do a ton of reading and puts everyone on the spot to see who read. i dont recommend her. D-
Just show up, do the reading, participate; you'll do fine. Listen to the woman before you judge her.
Face it, if youre a guy or a not 'pro-feminism' girl, shes not going to like you and youre going to get a bad grade.

I am guy and she was really nice to me and everyone in the class. She is a great teacher and one that knows her stuff. Her class was VERY interesting and even now I use what I learned in her class. She prepared me and helped me to succeed at Northeastern and Harvard. TAKE HER classes! You won't regret it.
Way too much work; too much expected of her students. If you want to be a history professor, this class is right for you. Stay away from her.
She was excellent. She opened the lessons up for discussion and encouraged our writing, instead of putting the students down. My class was only once a week so it was a lot of reading, but it was always interesting and made for good class discussions.
She is a terrible teacher.
Well, you'll learn nothing, and you'll get to hear her whine for an hour twice a week. Sound like fun?
Prof. Charnow was genuinely interested in teaching us the material. If you want to be in this class, you HAVE to read. This is the only way you will understand and enjoy the class. Make sure to get on her good side. If you participate frequently, she will like you. The reading is heavy, but you will definately learn a lot.
Prof Charnow is an excellent professor. If you like history, you'll love any class she teaches. She demands articulate and scholarly writing. If hate to read and write thoughtfully about history, you're going to hate her. If you have even a slight bit of intellectual capiblity or interest you'll love her.
She is a horrible teacher. she doesnt teach anything, she just makes us sit in a circle in class and listen to her complain and crap. i had more reading to do in this class then all my others combined. and she took forever to return papers. if you want to get a good grade def. dont take a class with her you'll learn nothing and waste your time
She is very intelligent, thought provoking and cares about subject matter. She grades fairly but normally teaches honors college and most kids think she is very hard. Must particpate and attend class and read novels to pass/learn. No textbook history through literature. Few assignments 3-4 5 page papers. All tests essay based. discussion based clas
Easy teacher and helpful if you take the time to do the work
very simple class. nice teacher although try and not to skip her class because she does take attendance. work is simple enough if you read and the class is usually interesting.
Wonderful teacher. Can't wait to have her again. She does give work but if she sees you making an effort she will cut you some slack
So glad to have her again this semester. If you are a fan of history and don't mind reading, what can be at times long, then she is perfect. She's great because she has the students sit in a circle and we always have interesting conversations. This teacher is perfect for all us history nerds. If you hate history, this isn't your teacher
I did well, but be warned that you read sooooo much in this course, and she's not always clear on some directions. Lots of reading, weekly writing assignment, and projects that pop up out of no where. She will act like this is your only class at Hofstra. She's very smart, but at times she takes the class to unhealthy level of seriousness.
I am not sure of the class information so I just put 12. I have her for a night class and I must say she really knows her material. She appears to be nice and she already warned us that we read alot. She seems to be great for history buffs like me.
I took this with her when I was a freshman. I'm not a history major in my junior year. I must say she was one of the best in my freshman year. She made Western Civ interesting and didn't make it a class that I dreaded. The only con is that there is going to be a ton of reading so try and get it on Tues/Thrusdays.
I do not like history courses. I am a science and math nerd so to say. I've read people complaining that she gives too much work and what not. All she gives is reading. It is not that bad even. It's not even bad if you take her on a Tues/Thrusday cause she gives you ample amounts of time for the reading. I highly advise you take her.
She is a great history professor! If you enjoy history course, she's the right one to get.
FYC Womens History class. Lots of reading, groupwork & papers. the class is basically a lot of discussion by students, none of whom want to say anything because no one wants her to say that theyre wrong when expressing their opinion. It was an OK class. not my cup of tea. I really enjoy her as a person, not as a professor though.
i did not like her teaching styles at all. if you want to take an easy class do not take her because there is a lot of writing. although the material was quite interesting her class was horrible to sit through. if you do not participate or come in late she will not like you
I loved my women's studies class, but I am glad that Prof. Rosenthal was also there. Prof. Charnow seems hard edge, but once you chat with her a little bit and get to know her, she's really not bad at all. Plus! she has friends in the city and she got me interested in Jennifer Miller and I got to see a performance in the city. I loved this class!
She likes people to have their own thoughts...don't be rude but if you make a thoughtful arguments she appreciates it because it means you're thinking about assignments. I am convinced I got an A because I disagreed with her while everyone else just nodded their heads and agreed with everything she said. Tough but fair and perfectly nice.
Professor Charnow is a great professor. She will really work with you and help you with your writing as long as you show her that you are putting in effort and that you are interested in the material. I found Professor Charnow to be remarkably fair and kind to all her students, regardless of sex or political preference. She rocks!!!
She makes you write more than your writing class probably does. She isn't understanding. I truly do not like her at all.
I wish I could say nice things about Professor Charnow because I know she is really a good person, but I can't. If you do not participate every time she asks a general question or write exactly in the way she wants, she will automatically assume you never read and put no effort in. She has very high expectations but has a hard time conveying them.
The class was not what I thought it was going to be at all. The most we did about the present was have current event articles, the class itself was mainly about imperialism. She also had a unique way of teaching - by reading novels and primary sources. Still as long as you showed up and paid attention and participated, it wasn't too difficult.
No matter what class you take with this professor, remember to focus all your work around the French or Jewish culture. It is simply the only thing she is interested in hearing about.
So at first I was scared of Professor Charnow, but I needed to take this class, and she was the only professor that would let me take with honors, I worked hard, and got an A- in the class, not going to lie not the easiest A-, also I am a history major so this helped me out as well. She does not like slackers.
Arguably one of the best professors I had freshman year. Caring and understanding about situations as long as you show her that you're trying in the class. A lot of readings, can manage if you don't read, very relaxed classroom setting.
She sometimes plays favorites, and defiantly can hold a grudge. Also, she tells you how the work won't be too heavy, by that she means reading 150 pages in a couple of days and writing book reviews that will never be good enough.
Had for for one day, knew I was in for an awful semester, and switched out. Best decision I ever made.
The worst professor Ive ever had during my time at Hofstra university. She has a horrible attitude and if you ask a question she makes you feel dumb. She should not be allowed to teach.
She is extremely rude! Work was really tough especially if you aren't good with history Suggesting you stay away
By far the worst history teacher I have had. She showed no ability to engage with the class and it felt like she never cared about teaching from beginning to the end of the semester. She relies on everyone to read from the vast amount of books she requires you to buy some of which have little significance in the course. Overall shes awful.
Absolutely awful professor. I would never take her class again. She changed the name of the course, and I wound up taking a history class I didn't even sign up for. She barely taught anything and she assigned many different books to read that did not relate to the overall theme of the course. Overall she was a terrible professor.
She needs to watch Game 5 or a Jet game once in a while.
You work toward a huge research project throughout the semester, writing book reviews and drafts throughout the semester. You also read several novels and discuss them in class. Do not skip class because more than half your grade ends up being based on discussion.
Prof Charnow LOVES to give papers. She is a tough grader. I won't say she gives F's like popcorn. She does have the tendency to lecture frequent but not ALL the time. If you hate to read thick packets and books, then she is not for you. As a person, she is absolutely amazing. I had her for two semesters for my 1st year, person: great; teacher: poor
Professor Charnow is by far the best professor I have ever taken. Yes, you have to work for the grade, but this is college. Grow up, and do the reading. She is so kind and caring. She has changed her schedule to help students who cannot make her office hours. Truly an amazing scholar and mentor.
Professor Charnow is a real gem of a teacher, her historical knowledge is absolutely amazing. Lots of reading, but she assigns books and articles that are insanely interesting. My one wish is we could have spent more time focusing on our final paper. Overall amazing class, very inspiring.
She is a very nice lady, she always gave extensions on the papers if needed but she is a super hard grader. She believes everyone is a history major and expects everyone to understand history and the readings at a history major level. She doesnt clarify things well either. You read A LOT. Sometimes she thinks this is the only class students have
Dr. Charnow is one of those professors who expects you to already have prior knowledge of the subject matter she is teaching. She never had a clear grading rubric, and she never posts grades to Blackboard. Very much reading heavy and if you keep up with the reading you'll be fine. Also very condescending, makes you feel stupid asking questions.
Professor Charnow knows her stuff; very ineffective and conveying it. She gives too much reading for such intervals, assigns papers based on our thoughts then tell us we are wrong for including our own opinions and knowledge because it wasn't in the readings. When you ask a question, she finds a way to make you feel dumb for even bothering.
She's real nice but just a little selfish and not very understanding. There is a required textbook that I had downloaded online for free as opposed to buying it for $60+ in the bookstore. She was upset by this and suggested that everyone had a physical copy of the book. We're already paying tuition and have other textbooks to buy. Digital is fine.
Personally I feel like she was just rude and acted extra at minor inconveniences that don't even matter.
