The professor is a good teacher, she is a bit scatter brain, but she is very nice. There are no research papers in her class, which I like, but she gives you alot of homework. We had three textbooks and read from them every week. She gave quizes every week, but dropped your two lowest scores and you could make up two quizes.
Would recommend this class. Allthough there is quite a bit of reading, she tells you exactly what you need to know. Make sure you do the work though because not doing one assignment will drop your grade almost in half. Has quizzes almost every other day. It is time consuming, spent about 2 1/2 hours a day reading.
Took her for two semesters (50/51) and got the same grade both times. She is nice until she covers the holocaust-then she gets REALLY weird! Quite a bit of reading. Allows the use of index cards for notes-use them! Do not be late or you may miss a quiz or lecture material. Tons of information in class and the books (3-4)! (too much?)
I was extremely bored by this teacher. She seemed to repeat each topic 3 to 4 times. Also she has quizes etc EVERY class. I wished I had taken this class elsewhere!
This class was a LOT of reading, but it was really interesting and not bad reading material either. There are quizzes every week on the reading, but she tells you what you need to know for the midterm and final. You can tell she REALLY likes history.
a great teacher if you love history and don't mind reading lots. The reading material, though frighteningly abundant, is none-the-less highly relevant and often very interesting. I would not rather have taken this class from anyone else. Take her or don't, whatever.
I would NOT recommend this teacher. Seriously, dont take her. We have 1-2 quizes EVERYDAY. and u are required to do a notecard which means homework everynight, on top of other assignments she assigns. She also always talks about her trips to China, which frankly, i dont care about. I warn u, do not take this class with her.
I hated this class at times..it could be ok. If you don't like history i wouldn't suggest it. attendance IS MANDATORY, she gives 1 if not 2 or 3 quizzes EVERY CLASS! She talks the whole time, she is quiet and boring. She changes due dates all the time and it gets CONFUSING. quizzes are easy but tests are hard! I thought i was failing but got an A.
Absolutely useless Prof. Spent most of her time and ours, showing us pictures of her vacations across the world, primarily Asia. Of these pictures only a few had any relevence to the course studies. Complete waste of time and air. Don't take.
Sally is a nice lady, but a horrible teacher. She shows us slides from her trip to China which has NO Relevance to the class. She lectures the entire time and hands out POINTLESS Outlines which are not helpful. There is alot of reading and expect a quiz every day. The midterm and Final are very hard, since the material is unorganized
Mrs. Davis is a very passionate teacher whom really takes Asian History to another level; there is a lot of reading involved in this class (I probably did at least 3 hours for every regular set of assignments + more for special things), but if you do the reading, the homework questions/quizzes are cake. Lecture notes are a must for tests!
Sally Davis is an excellent instructor. She's passionate and knowledgeable about history The reading load for her courses is about the same as any other college course. If you can't keep up with it...good luck graduating from college. Lectures are interesting and test are fair. This course helped me prepare for upper division course work.
Ms Davis loves China, so love China too, & its an easy pass. Tough A however, you hav 2be thoroughly interested to pull an A. Because she is very knowledgeable as a scholar, but struggles in teaching the info concisely. So u must do4self i.e. read the books some chapters more then once & read outside sources as well. U can't just slide by w/ Sally
AWFUL TEACHER!!!!!!!!!! nice lady but horrible teacher. I liked history, but after taking her class I avoid history at all costs. I am an A student but received an awful grade because she gives EXTREMELY hard tests. She also cancelled all together 9 classes!!!
Horrible teacher, although she is nice. Her handwriting is unreadable and she tends to bore the class. Her shoes squeek a lot and hands out outlines that barely help you. Not recommended.
Can't really recommend. Lectures often, very quiet, VERY boring. Quizes every day, so attendance is mandatory. She is sometimes extremely unclear about test content - I'm an A student and I floundered trying to figure out when to study for. Questions on tests/quizes often ambiguous and poorly worded. Take at your own risk.
She is a horrible teacher. The books were the only relevant thing to asian history in the class. This should have been an online course. All she talks about is her trip to China. DO NOT RECOMEND!
Davis is actually one of my favorite professors... I can understand how clarity can often be an issue, but *just ask her*. It's really not that hard. I loved both of her classes and the material we covered. Most of the people complaining on here simply don't understand that this is COLLEGE! An "A" is completely obtainable if you do your work!!
Nice lady and passionate about her subject! Do the extra credit if you're struggling, it's an easy and large boost to your grade!
Very nice, and cares about subject and students. She confuses assignments sometimes, but makes adjustments. Fair grader, grades more on effort than anything else. Perfect class after withdrawal deadline.
Interesting lectures! Make sure to put the effort into assignments, like someone else said, assignments are mostly graded on effort and they really will help with the quizzes! Overall really enjoyed the class!
She's very unorganized and can easily confuse as she jumps back and forth. Even her speech seems to ramble and jump around in a spontaneous and random way. There was really no prerequisite for this class, HOWEVER, when it was too late, I realized that knowing Geography and the Bible is a key to success for this class. Lots of essays.
She is very unorginized and DOES NOT stay on topic. She was more concerned with modern day China than the US history we were supposed to be learning. She requires you to take notes on all document reading assignments with out them you cannot take the quizes.
Very boring, and I mean very VERY boring. Class is easy, but she is merely a historian spilling out information with interesting no teaching mechanisms. All lecture.
One of the most boring teachers I have had at Sierra. Not recommended. Rambles on about personal trips and is spiteful towards students that question anything.
I had a really hard time paying attention to her lectures... they're pretty boring. There is homework almost every week with the possibility of taking a quiz the next class. There's midterm and final with 2 parts, one on the reading and the other lectures. Read & pay attention to the lectures!
Horrible! She sets it up as an easy class, but then when you get to the tests, she grades so hard! She doesn't grade on a curve. The highest grade in the class was an 82! Don't take her!
Nice lady but unorganized, some of the required text was available only in the library and couldn't be checked out, lots of reading and quizes on reading, put in the effort and easy B
This was the worst history class I have ever taken. If this is your only class, you MIGHT have the time to do all the work assigned. There are "pop" quizzes 95% of the class days. She is not helpful. I tried really hard and recieved a D. I did all my assignments (She doesn't take late assignments-there is only ONE makeup) She's AWEFUL, seriously!
Took her class... Grade deadline was today and still waiting on mine. If you are not into busy work- don't take the class. If you are willing and able to be busy all the time- take the class. It is one of those classes you have to show up all the time to pass. She gives you the tools to pass, you just have to use them.
Prof. Davis is a very nice lady, knows a lot about history, and is a great person, but is a rather unorganized teacher. The grades took awhile to get back and such. However, if you do the reading (rather tedious and sometimes unpertaining at times) the tests and quizzes are very easy. She is a fair grader and an easy teacher if you do the work.
Professor Davis is pleasant and knowledgeable, however she is clearly used to dealing with people fresh from HS. She snaps when she feels she does not have rapt attention and even mandates the style in which you take notes from source docs. She is condescending; requires a lot of busy work. Don't expect to be treated as the paying adult you are.
Sally is a very sweet lady and expects a lot out of her students. Yes, there is a lot of tedious reading. Yes, the tests are hard. And yes, there are many quizzes in class. If you come to class and try hard, there is no reason to do poorly. She gives a complete study guide for tests! If you don't want to work hard, though, don't take this class.
She is an interesting teacher to say the least. She uses the book ALOT!!! There are book tests which are impossible, and finals from lectures. She is a sweet woman, but if you piss her off she won't think twice about kicking you out. Her lecture style is all over the place, so if you have to have structure DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
She is kind and she looks always happy. Homework questions are difficult to answer with no real guidelines from class. quiz's and tests are difficult if you don't read the books twice. I suggest you take another class.
GREAT TEACHER! Yea, she uses the book alot and you really have to put the work it. But if you plan on going on to a 4 year what else do you expect. The people who rate her bad cant handle a UC type enviorment. CSU at best. She is great you will really learn what it takes to do well in a history class from her.
She's such a nice lady! But not the greatest teacher. I've taken many history classes and I've never had to work this much. You write essays everyday and her requirement seem to always be changing. It's a tough class.
If you don't mind soft-spoken teachers with no lecturing skills and don't make it interesting, have at it. Her class is not kind to visual learners and she doesn't make history something to get excited about (I already dislike the subject. She doesn't help).
She was really scatter brained and just not a well organized teacher. It was hard to take notes- as there were so many different places she's jump around to, and it was just a nightmare. Go ahead & take the class, but have fun dealing with her.
She is really boring to listen too so I would not recommend taking her class at 8am as you will fall asleep. The homework assignment take a long time so don't wait until the last minute. She is a nice lady but very scatterbrained with her assignments. I would recommend another teacher if you had the option
learned a lot.
It you are a strong visual learner (reading) then you will thrive in this class. I am both a kinesthetic and visual but I am suffering in this class. She is sweet but she is very scatter brained. The work load for this class is unnecessary and too extensive.
Great teacher if you want to get ready for a 4 year school. Interesting and informed.
Professor Davis is very nice, she seems to genuinely care about students. She was very clear in her instructions for assignments. She does quiz a lot but they were pretty easy. I did not have much time to study for my second midterm and final exam due to a family crisis and was able to pass with a B from paying attention to her lectures.
i'm a UC Davis graduate that took this course to stay up on my academic before i started my PhD program. To all the people complaining about the reading and workload: her workload is what you should expect from any Upper Div course in any 4yr university. Get used to it or don't plan to graduate with your BA. Otherwise, great prof, great class!
She is a very interesting teacher. Expects a lot of reading with quizzes. More like a 4 year college professor. Do assignments and you'll do fine.
This teacher is extremely hard and can put you to sleep. She loves to hear her own voices so prepare for that. Some people in my class wouldn't even study and get a decent grade, and on the quizzes I would do well. On the essays midterm and final it really is up into interpretation and she would grade harder than my english teacher.
I liked history and saw her bad reviews but thought " i was always good at history so i should be fine." jesus christ i was wrong. Her handwriting honestly can't read can't exaggerate it. prepare to read many hours and take notes, tbh lots of bs work. Honestly let me do you a favor, don't take her especially if you have a job. so much hw lol
While she's helpful and cares about your education, she really needs to get it together. She assigned the wrong textbook to our class, corrected it 3 weeks into school, then everyone had to pay an extra $30. Lectures often run after class is over. Quizzes are rushed in the last 5 minutes of class. Assignment directions are confusing. Clarity none
Sucks. If you are taking a full load and working I wouldn't take this class. Lecture puts you to sleep. Students are correcting her in class. She never stops talking. Tons of hw. Super boring. tons of reading and quizzes. Not worth taking in my opinion. Didn't learn a thing the entire semester.
Trust me on this one, just don't. If you value your sanity at all, just don't. Horrible teacher and very annoying person.
Probably one of the worst professors I've ever had. Very boring lectures that are hard to pay attention to and her tests are difficult as well. She is also very unclear as to what you should study for the tests. Made an easy subject way more difficult than it had to be. Definitely would not recommend.
Sally Davis was not good. She was very disorganized and refused to clearly communicate with her students. Asking her for help on an assignment was like pulling teeth from a baby: impossible and exhausting. I do not recommend her for any class. She is knowledgable but no good as a professor. She is rude, condescending, and arrogant. Back out, now.
Professor Davis is very disorganized and has long lectures, BUT her class is not difficult to handle as long as you are present and do your homework. She has responded back to me quickly when I emailed her a question. She is very knowledgable on history, and gives stories.
She is overall, a very understanding person and wants you to pass. She has an assignment calendar from the start of class so you can get ahead very fast. Exams are easy and anytime we have a surprise written exam, on a random question. She will say something along the lines of "OH THIS WOULD BE A GREAT ESSAY QUESTION". Textbook is cheap.
I believe Sally Davis is an Upper Division professor stuck at a community college. She wouldn't be receiving these negative reviews if she was at a UC school or a CSU. She wants students who're serious and who care about the field. Looking for an easy grade for a requirement? Look elsewhere. Sally wants students who can prove they know their stuff
Sally Davis was easily the worst professor I have ever had. Her boring lectures drag on because she gets off topic, and we usually only got through about one or two things, and then she would squeeze a quiz in the last 5 minutes. She is also EXTREMELY hard to communicate with and very unwilling to be flexible with office hours or anything to help.
The worst professor I have ever had. I don't think we even finished a single topic because she would ramble on for an hour and have to rush to try and give you the information. Her lectures are straight up boring, she does not have a power point she does not have slides she just stands and talks. The worst class i have ever taken. DO NOT TAKE

THE WORSE PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD! No slide shows. Boring.
WORST!!! Lots of busy work. To much to put up with!
She is a disorganized mother hen. A half hour would pass by the time lecture begins. She is always behind on lecture material. Spent whole semester leading up to the Civil War and then ran out of class time so it was never covered. Also, never post grades on canvas. She handed out a study guide to an earlier class and ran out so we never got one.
worst professor no pictures lots of work
Bad bad bad teacher. Just stands and talks. Avoid!
Way too hard!
by far the worst professor I've ever had
Oh no dont go!!!
Wrost professor ever!
Not the most exciting lecture giver but easy class. She shares her personal travels and as you analyze documents that relate to the chapter you read. Very clear grade criteria.
Sally is a great professor! Interesting class, not too hard. Take her -- you won't regret it!
For me this was a great class. The lectures were clear and you are quizzed on each lecture but they are pretty easy. You have to read from the document book every week. She gives lots of feedback and is helpful. I would have liked more videos.
I dont think she cares about peoples personal problems and how it may affect class work. Everything is lecture quiz and document quizzes excepts she expects 'college' writing for discussion post, yet her lectures have grammar mistakes all over. So practice what you preach. Her discussion questions are very repetitive in terms of your opinion ques
Lectures aren't very exciting since they're written BUT you don't have to purchase a textbook. Quizzes and tests are open note. There's a lecture quiz and document quiz each week (open note) so take good notes! The Midterm and Final are long essays but not too hard if you study! She's very sweet and responds to emails quickly.
I have always loved history and I have now faced the first teacher that made me hate it to the point I had to drop this class. She gives impossible to read lectures with tons of errors and no organization and then gives a quiz with 18 questions and expects us to finish it in 20 minutes. The quizzes also have none of the same info as the lecture.
First of all, Prof. Davis is very hypocritical. She stresses that we use college level grammar, which I agree with, however she herself does not. Her lectures difficult to understand and read due to the many errors. Her tests are difficult and the questions are very vague, meaning even if you studied, you will not know the answer to most questions.
Her "lectures" are written and disorganized despite the "guides" she gives out on how to maneuver the lecture page. The quizzes are NOTHING we went over in the lectures. I became frustrated during a quiz and went to the lecture page and did the control f and tried to look up key words but would get 0 results. So literally NOT on the lecture.
If you are even slightly neurodivergent, DO NOT take her class! The "lectures" are just a big wall of disorganized text. I think you'd learn more by typing "teach me about the American Revolution" into ChatGPT. I'd say about 15% of questions in every quiz is "inferred", meaning there is not right answer, but you still got the question wrong? Awful.
Very difficult to talk to, I would email for help on tests and quizzes and she would answer with "ok" and not helpful at all. She also knew I had an IEP and decided to give me zeros on my tests because I would look at my notes and would fail me for it.
From condescending emails to her poor comprehension skills (which are elementary level at best) communication over email is impossible with her. Answers to quizzes don't relate to the material at all. When asked about it she says the answers are "inferred" and also threatens to reduce grades for "opening questions in a quiz and then answering". 0/5
For the love of God do not take her. BY FAR, the RUDEST and most condescending teacher I have ever had. My entire internet and power went out for 2 days and verbatim said "thats not a good enough excuse." and wouldn't give me an extension. Her lectures are absolute nonsense that you get quizzed on. Answers are "inferred"??? makes zero sense.
I enjoyed this Professor! The lectures are long and require extensive notes- take these by hand and you'll do much better (trust me). Read the instructions and all of the material, she is very clear in what she expects. Inference is critical in this class, you have to be able to draw conclusions based on the information given to ace this class.
Very unfit teacher. Does not provide sufficient time for the quizzes/tests. Complains about academic dishonesty for things that are normal learning tools (reading your test results). Tests only unlock the day they are due (destroys online class flexibility). Lockdown browser must be used (only works 1/3 of the time). Do not take any class with her
Horrible. She unlocks tests and quizzes the day they are due. extremely inconvenient. She has accused me of using Ai multiple times which was false. She also checks on canvas to see how long you were reading her lectures for and if you watched all the videos. Once I didn't watch a video all the way through & gave me no credit on the quiz.
I would recommend avoiding her at all costs. She was so bad, I emailed the hist dean with a complaint as soon as the semester ended. She is hard to talk to, and you will get extreme anxiety from trying to understand her ramblings. She did round up my B+ to an A, which was nice, I guess. She should retire. She was the worst teacher I have ever had.
not good dont take I repeat dont take
do not take.
Terrible professor. She opens big tests on the weekend and closes it the same day! She also opens lecture quizzes and Document quizzes and closes them on the same day. Contacting her is strange, she replies with unprofessional emails, does not even answer the questions that I asked on the email! Avoid this class.
I have read some of the comments, and while some say the class is hard, following her step-by-step guidance makes the material clear. The course is well organized, guiding questions, outlines, and readings that match the lectures. The class focuses on understanding rather than memorization.
