Sally is understanding and compassionate to her class. She also teaches the material which is handy. her tests are reasonable. Oh.... and she's hot
No Comments
Sally is a great professor. She keeps you engaged class and only tests you on what she covers in class. Her teaching style is very effective and you learn a lot. She's great! (She does great diagrams too!)
Sally is awesome! listen for little jokes and sarcastic wit during lectures. shes the best, hands down. difficult class but she motivates.
aaahhh!!!
sally is a pretty chill professor, the notes are pretty clear, and she gives great visuals. She is really funny, and class is very interesting.
Sally is one of my favorite past professors. I loved her class...she had a way of really explaining things well. I knew that stuff inside and out and it was all because she's an awesome teacher and really knows how to teach.
Sally is usually cheerful, sometimes sarcastic, but overall excited about teaching the often mundane material of basic biology. Not too difficult if you take notes in class, but her tests can be challenging. She adds relevant side information to what is in the textbook, filling classes with applicable knowledge.
She is not a bad teacher if your learning style happens to coincide with her teaching style. However, if it doesn't she refuses to acknowledge that the problem might involve her as well as the student. Kind of funny being that the majority of her class has a C...
as past comments say, as long as u take notes and review the materials that she went over that day, you'll able to get atleast an C-~solid B on her exams. If you slack off,,,,probably your score will range from D and below
Sally is awesome. She explains things really well. Most of your test questions are from your class notes, she uses the text book more as a suplement
Sally is one of my favorite teachers at SU! If you like Biology, her class will be a blast. She is extremely clear in all her information and lectures. To do well in the class, I recommend at least skimming the chapters in the book before lecture and attending every lecture and going to the study groups!
Sally is a great professor. Her lectures are clear and incorporate a lot of drawings. Buy a 4-color pen for this class, she uses several colors in her drawings. This is a tough class, attention to detail is a must and the study groups are a huge help too. She says that the book is a supplement but be sure to read over it before/after each class
Sally's lectures are very good, and at the beginning of the quarter she'll say to concentrate on her lectures and not so much on the book. This isn't completely true, though, because you really need to use the book to do well in her class. She's friendly and good to talk to, just don't listen to her when she says the book isn't important.
If you're a great notetaker, you're good to go. Visual learners are perfect for this class. Skim through the book before and after lecture, NEVER slack off. 3 tests and a final--most are multiple questions..VERY tricky, few short answer questions mostly from lectures. study groups VERY helpful--comes with study packets.
AWESOME professor! Best professor I've had at SU hands down. She lets you call her Sally, very helpful, friendly, and approachable. She does use colored chalk and draws lots of pictures, so bring colored pencils! All of the material on the tests are straight from lecture and practice problems. She pretty much tells you what will be on the test.
Either her teaching style suits your or it doesn't. If you're a visual learner, take good notes, and doesn't slack off studying, she's a great teacher. If you're a slow learner, you're in trouble. I guess you can get okay grades from reading textbook, but all her tests are based on lectures and study group practice tests.
Sally's awesome but makes you work hard. If you study and take good notes you'll learn a lot from the class.
Super hard, pretty much your grade is determined by your test scores. I got almost all 100s on my hw, and did everything she said, took really good notes, studied hard and still got a C! as a person she is cool, but as a teacher i cant say i learned much or got much out of her class! good luck!
Sally is a great professor. She is interesting and charismatic, even at 8am. Her tests were all lecture based, so I would recommend getting a coffee before each class if its early. Taking good notes and doing all the exercises will definitely help you. I'm really not that in to bio buy she really made it great.
Excellent lecturer. There's never a dull moment. Tests are lecture-based, so you don't have to work through the difficult textbook. You have to work hard, but the homework and labs and lectures all fit together pretty seamlessly. Studying for tests is sometimes difficult if your notes aren't complete, so make sure to utilize office hours.
Sally's tests can be very hard, but I learned a ton from class.
Took Sally's class for BIOL 161&171, 163&173. She talks quickly, so it's best to make use of her office hours if you want to get the full value of your time in her class. Tests are multiple choice-based, so study groups are a MUST if you want to be more comfortable on exam days. There's a lot to learn and love about her classes once you're through.
Sally is a great professor! She knows the material and knows how to get it across to the students in an effective, detailed, and valuable way. Utilize study groups and read the textbook as a guide. Take her class if you can!
Amazing professor. Always willing to talk after class or talk on the phone (weird, but good if it's an emergency). Hard material (difficult to understand but she makes it easier), goes VERY fast. I recommend taking your laptop w/ the ppts already on it, and putting notes in. Fun, interactive, nice, favorite professor yet.
WONDERFUL professor. Her lectures are interesting and funny, always willing to answer questions. Her tests are hard but if you go to every lecture and go to study session an A is totally possible. Love her!
Super fun and interesting class. If you pay attention in class you never have to open the text book but still learn a lot.
Sally is one of my favorite professors. She is very clear, funny, and has been teaching the class forever. She knows the material inside and out. Test questions make you think but come directly from her lectures. HIGHLY recommended.
Crystal clear lectures, fair expectations, reasonable exams, very helpful. She has a LOT of experience teaching the intro bio classes.
She uses her power points for lecture material and the exams are based on her lectures. Never used the textbook. Her exams are extremely hard, homework assignments are easy because of her study groups. Very nice person, but a very hard grader. Doesn't grade on a curve.
I found this class very challenging. Although she explained things well in class, her powerpoints are almost entirely pictures which can make it difficult to study later. Also, I feel, that you'll be doomed if you don't do all of the assigned reading. She expects you to know everything she is teaching you by the time you get to class.
My favorite General Biology teacher, she is so funny and makes an early class easy to handle. Make sure to write down everything she says, because its important. I barely had to open the book for this course, but I studied A LOT for every test. She is very fair and understanding, and very helpful when approached.
Class consists of powerpoint lecture. Homework sheets due once a week, tests are challenging. Excellent teacher and makes material interesting and relavent to real world. Very helpful through email, office hours, and even texting.
she makes you think more than you need to which sucks.
I really really can't understand why anyone would want to take her class. Her exams are hard, and doesn't give you a clear view of what she really wants. She is very nit picky and whenever you ask her a question, she usually answers with another question! Avoid at all costs even if it means taking a 7:45 class instead. HORRIBLE TEACHER.
This class is really difficult to do well in. To pass the class you must go to study group! That's where all the correct answer are given for her worksheets, she looks for very specific answers which you won't find on your own! Also printing out her PowerPoints so you write down the details she says instead of writing down what's on the powerpoint.
She is so sweet and you can always tell that she has a lot of knowledge. The only drawback is that she goes very fast!
Sally is extremely knowledgeable and you can tell she really knows her stuff. Unfortunately, it is pretty much required you attend study group to get good grades. Her exams are too difficult, mean grade on the last one was 70%. She thought that was good. Do not take her class unless you want to spend countless hours studying and still failing
She is the best! She always knows what she is talking about. She is really funny sometimes. The exams are difficult, you have to study hard to beta satisfying grade!
What I liked about Dr. McLaughlin was that she would take time during class to review with us what we needed to know for the test. What bothered me about her style of teaching was that she would hardly put any words on her slides. This made it tricky to know what the main concepts were.
Seriously if you want to pass DO NOT take her. she is extremely hard, her test are crazy difficult and she doesnt curve the grade. The first test the avg grade was barely a 60% , clearly its your teaching if the whole class is failing. Any time you ask for help she just says "This is the level I want you on" . Avoid at all costs.
She is a good professor. She knows her material and comes to class prepared. However, the material is extremely hard and a lot of people i know get 50100 on the exams. It is hard to pass. If you are going to take this course be prepared to devote hours each week studying if you want a good grade.
Her tests and quizzes were hard, but her lectures and labs were pretty enjoyable. She is pretty funny and knows her stuff. Be sure to print off or at least look at the powerpoints before lecture, since she talks really fast.
Sally cares a lot about her students. She will do everything she can to make sure you understand the material. However, you will have to work for your grade. I know many people received A's in her class (so it's possible.) Record lectures, don't skip class, and use study groups. Expect weekly homework sheets and pop quizzes 1-2 times a week.
I really liked Professor McLaughlin, and was surprised when I heard so many people talking about how difficult her class is. I really enjoyed her class because she cared about the material, made it interesting, and overall, she was funny. Having a teacher who truly cares about what she is teaching really helps the students learn better.
Sally is by far one of my favorite teachers I've had for science at SU. her tests are hard, but they all contain material from the lectures.
Sally is one of the best teachers that I've had so far. She is very knowledgeable about the material, is funny, and is more than willing to answer questions. Lecture notes are very important--I would recommend printing out the lecture slideshow before each class period.
Gives weekly quizzes, but gives you 5 questions in advance and chooses one of them for the quiz. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS for questions on the learning objectives. Print out her powerpoints before lectures. Funny, interesting, and gives lots of interesting examples and medical applications. Tests are hard, but if you study you'll be fine.
McLaughlin has been teaching for years know so she knows what to teach and how to teach it. She's very specific on what she wants us to know, making her tests and pop quizzes tough. But if you study hard and prepare for them, you'll be able to to really well in her class. She's very helpful outside and is willing to talk when needed.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The entire class is lecture. There is no breaks or any time for discussion with your classmates. She ask the most specific question ever. You better record her lecture otherwise you will not get good notes. You have to do so much studying compared to the other Bio class. What ever you do go with the other professor.
Professor McLaughlin is a hit or miss, depending on your learning style. Personally, I struggled in her class because it is very lecture heavy and it is based on a lot of what she says during lecture (she does not include many words on her lecture slides). The textbook is your best friend in this class and I recommend securing a tutor early on.
Sally's classes are HARD. She might seem scary, but she's actually very sweet and always willing to answer questions. Classes are predictable--relatively fast-paced lectures with image-heavy slides, but the exam question are really tough. She'll ask questions that you feel like you've never seen before. Sally's great, but her class is challenging
Great teacher. Attending lectures is really important, but its only beneficial if you actually read before lecture.
stay away. she does not believe in students that are struggling even if you are willing to work hard and meet with a tutor and her. she will tell you to drop out
Professor McLaughlin is an amazing professor and person. I personally did not like her lecture style because her powerpoints consists of most if not all pictures. This results in you needing to pay close attention to what she says in class or else you will miss important points. Recording her lectures are heavily suggested!!
While Sally is a nice professor, her lectures are extremely unorganized. She expects you to know information in GREAT detail, although she doesnt go over it herself. She purposely makes quizzes and exams extremely tough and does not support her students enough. I would never take her again.
Mclaughlin as a person is very sweet and lovely but when it comes to content for the class, she expects a lot from you. If you study HEAVILY you will for sure get a high grade but the exams are very tricky and she will include many trick questions.
While I have heard good things about Sally from upperclassmen, with class material becoming primarily online I would never ever choose her. Her class is lecture heavy and doesn't involve much class participation. She is sweet, but doesn't explain her content well enough, and often seems passive aggressive. You have to work hard to pass. Get a Tutor
Dr. McLaughlin means well, but comes off a little passive aggressive. Classes were lecture heavy but did cover the material that was presented on the test. I liked how she prerecorded her lectures, but a lot of work must be put in by the student by taking thorough notes on her lectures and everything she says in class in order to get a good grade.
Does not know what she is doing. She is VERY confusing, VERY aggressive, If you ask her questions she will not answer your questions specifically
Cannot explain, she also does not know what she is doing. Not clear when explaining lectures.
not clear, when asking a question, I do not get any answers back. She get confused herself.
Heavy group work, tough grading, if you don't get a good score on the practical, basically you will fail this class :)
She uses a reverse lecture style where you have to watch prerecorded lectures and then be prepared for a quiz every class. Tests are very long and take up most of your grade.
Sally's flipped classroom was amazing. Lectures were pre-recorded and vital to success. Daily quizzes helped me grasp whether I understood the material, in-class assignments strengthened my understanding and Sally gave NUMEROUS resources to best support us. Do what she says and do the work provided and you WILL succeed. I LOVED her!!
Now I know a LOT of ppl that don't like Sally or how she teaches. For me, she was literally AMAZING. Sure, the lectures are time consuming and I do spend 2hrs watching them for hw, but I always feel so prepared coming into class. The exams are super straight forward and as long as you base ur studying around the learning objectives, you'll do well!
Dr. McLaughlin is very condescending to students. She makes you feel bad for not getting the answer correct. Overall, not a professor I would every want again.
Only take this class if you work well with a flipped classroom. I did not find that class time was used productively and the lecture video that were assigned every class period took 2+ hours to watch and take good notes to be prepared enough for the next class activity. Not my favorite class but it was do-able. Sally was okay.
Absolutely loved her and would take her again. I know many people disliked her but I personally found her flipped classroom really helpful. (watch lectures outside of class, group work/lecture review in class, really helped in retaining information) Study the study and guide carefully and you'll ace the exams.
Only take this class if you work well with a flipped classroom. Even then, lectures only had pictures on them. Sally herself was very condescending to students as well as rude. However, Sally was helpful when she needed to be and answered questions, but would make students feel dumb. Sally would branch away from the textbook and do her own thing.
she was one of my favorite bio teachers. everything that was on the exams she taught in the take home lectures and went over in class in very good detail. she gave great preparation tools with the ICA's and the mc practice sheets. she's very enthusiastic about bio and is very great to talk to about things bio. i loved her.
Although she can come off as intimidating, she is so caring and genuinely wants to see all of her students do well. She is so charismatic and I loved going to her class. She made learning fairly complex topics easy and her lectures are all you need to study (do not buy the book, she does not reference it after the third class).
In the beginning, it was a little intimidating due to the amount of info. She uses a flipped classroom style, where you watch lectures for homework, and then in class you do group worksheets with questions based on the lecture you watched for hw. If you have questions, she will be right there to answer them! She also prepares you well for exams.
Sally can be very condescending & rude to students; not that nice or understanding. I never felt comfortable asking her for help b/c she makes students feel bad for not having the correct answers. You need to watch lecture videos to understand the ICAs. The lectures took 3+ hours to complete. Her grading is tough. Take notes & be prepared!
Only do this if you work well with a flipped classroom! Sally was very disrespectful and condescending to students! Moreover, there was a prep quiz that was required to be taken after lecture videos, and before coming to class.
Dr.Mclaughlin is very sweet and good at teaching. This class is hard regardless of the teacher. Her lectures are usually 45 minutes long but take longer since you are taking notes. I like the flipped classroom cause you can go at your own pace. Exams are all multiple-choice. My tip is to take good notes & go to office hours. She wants to help you!!
flipped lecture, hard but multiple choice exams, assignments and prep quiz every class. She's sweet but often gets confused in her own class and mixes up details.
I think this is an unpopular opinion, but I appreciated the flipped classroom format. I get distracted easily so it was nice to go at my own pace watching the pre lecture videos.
I gave it an entire year before I wrote this review just to see if it was me or the professor. This class caused me so much stress that I almost dropped nursing all together. The lectures are old from 2020 and there are no words on her powerpoints. The averages on exams was 63 %. This class is harder than entry level Bio... I would not recommend.
The online lectures were very time consuming (they would take me 3 hours per video), and very detailed. To succeed in her class you must show up everyday, participate, and memorize a lot of small details. The learning objectives are the key. If you take her you will grow academically at a very stressful cost.
Harsh. Condescending. Hard tests.
Most rude/condescending professor I've ever had. Her class format is ridiculously challenging to actually learn anything. Class average for tests wasalways in the 60s. At office hours she will just tell you to study more. She claims her flipped classroom style saves the student time but the lectures will take you 5x longer than a normal lecture.
Not tryna be rude but she needs to realize that we also have other classes other than her Bio class. I took her class last quarter and she is a fun teacher, but the things and ways she words her quizes and questions, dont make sense. It isnt as clear as she says she does.
She uses a flipped classroom which means that there is a lot of homework and a lot to prep for the following class periods. In class she is super responsive to answering questions and isn't weird and dodgy about giving you the answer. Most in class assignments are group work, some presentations.
I attended study group when I felt it needed, started weekly tutoring right after I got my results from the first exam back, and after all that went into office hours at least once a week. I am extremely upset with the correlation between my performance and my grade for this course. Do not take her, if you have any other options...
she thinks that her class is the only class that matters and the only one you're taking. She wasn't my option at all but do to scheduling issues I had to take her. always does multiple choice for exams and makes them ridiculously hard. no matter how much effort I put you come out of her class with a headache. dont recommend at all. AVOID
Professor McLaughlin has a flipped classroom you have to watch lectures before every class and there are quizzes on the lectures. For in-class assignments, you have to work in groups and sometimes have to present. This class is hard because the lectures are very time-consuming. It is a lot of work I did many practice questions to pass exams.
Professor Mclaughlin teaches in a flipped lecture style, if you don't watch the lectures you're not going to understand the activity in class. When she tries to explain a question that was asked she will do it in a round about way that never gets to the point. Lots of group work and presentations.
Dr McLaughlin is clearly very passionate about the material. However, she is unable to teach to a standard higher than my sixth grade bio teacher. The flipped classroom is only good if you already had a background in Bio. However, with a background in Bio this class is genuinely awful, she will oversimplify things to the point they are incorrect.
The amount of work that you have to put in just to get a good grade on a pre quiz that has an insane impact on your overall grade, is insane. If you do find yourself taking a class with her, make sure to really only put time and effort into her class. I was enrolled in a chemistry class as well with hers, but could only choose to do hers.
Professor McLaughlin was an alright professor overall, she clearly has a passion for biology. She had a flipped classroom style which I understood why would have been helpful but her lectures were extremely time-consuming. She had in-class assignments every class and was usually nitpicky about the details for the answers. Personally, not for me.
I despised the flipped classroom work of 20-40 min videos every day before class. She can be passive aggressive too if you try to ask her a question. She can be kind though especially if you are an active student and go to her office hours, though it didn't really feel like she care for me when I showed up... She just repeats her slides too so meh
Dr. Mclaughlin is an okay professor, do the lectures and readings and take notes and you'll be fine, she can be passive aggressive if you ask questions and still don't get it after a while. DO NOT DEPEND ON HER TO EMAIL YOU BACK!!! I emailed her about 7 times and NEVER got a reply, all important emails too because I was out sick and missed class.
Dr. McLaughlin's class is challenging, but engaging if you put in the work. The flipped classroom and group assignments can be time-consuming, but she's helpful in office hours. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for extra practice.
She's definitely passionate about biology and knows what she's talking about. Flipped style classroom isn't as bad as people say. Exams are extremely hard bc of the way she words her questions and answers. Her lectures are very dense. ICA's are pretty easy and boost ur grade by a lot but she's very nit picky with the way she grades.
Some of these reviews are harsh tbh. Hardest part of the class was the flipped class video lectures, but they were NOT bad. Usually 20-60min in length for each class, easy to watch at 1.25 speed. Just stay on top of the video lectures and youre fine. I didnt even need to read the textbook. Daily activities are easy, but participation does matter.
The flipped classroom is the easiest part of this class, just watch in 2x speed. ICAs are straightforward and most of the time we got out early. Participation and attendance is MANDATORY. Exams are all multiple choice and not that bad if you pay attention.
