Would not recommend this class. Received a C (I have a 3.8 GPA). Everyone I know who took this class didn't get a grade higher than a C. Lectures are somewhat interesting, but quizzes are impossibly hard.
Excellent class. Yes, I am a history buff so I am biased. Not for the individual that can't handle taking notes. Extremely detailed lectures and taking good notes guarantee's an "A". Knows his stuff and does an excellent job in teaching it.
Despite the fact that Codina stressed being on time to class when he would walk in 10-15 minutes late 85% of the time, it wasn't too bad. Lectures are pretty boring, honestly. He reiterates himself to the point you can mock what he is saying word for word
this guy wears the SAME TIGHT JEANS EVERYDAY! his essay tests were very difficult in that he was very unclear of what he wanted. his quizzes were quite random. his lectures were pretty good though and was approachable at least.
NOT an easy teacher... his lectures are detailed and interesting, but if you don't take notes on EVERYTHING he says, you're screwed on the tests.
I admit the first test was pretty hard, but after that, it was a breeze. He loves what he teaches, and it shows. He does have a monotone voice, so if you are tired, he might put you to sleep. But, other than that I think he is a great teacher and you will learn a great deal from him.
Liked his style of teaching. You need to keep up on the reading in the book; lots of questions come out of the book for the quizzes. Lecture is quite structured but he puts together an interesting glimpse into our past.
His lectures were very interesting. Although tests are very hard, it's a good class to take. Although his tight pants are kinda..gross..it's a very good class. You can tell he loves what he does, and is very helpful too.

Pants WAY too tight. I would NOT recommend this prof. I am an A student, and got a B in his class. I took detailed notes, and none of it would show up on the quizzes. He would pick little details that were a sentence long from the book to make into questions. I would suggest Crandell-Bear instead.
He does wear tight pants, but it's probably because he rides horses. He has a monotone voice, but he definitely knows what he's teaching, yet his tests are hard. You probably should read the book along with taking notes to get a good grade. hard tests, and there are essay tests, but there's no right or wrong, just back it up w/ evidence.
Although his class is difficult, he's still a great instructor. You can't get bored with his lectures.
His class was hard. But you learn alot in that class. Leactures are good.
Very great lecturer.
I like him enough to take him again. no out side work, but you are responsible for the readings for the tests
really into what hes teaching.
Good teacher. Good lectures.
Very interesting teacher, Great lectures, he knows his stuff more than most teachers. You can ask him any question and he usually has a well laid out answer.
Lectures are very informative and interesting. Attendance is a must otherwise you will miss a lot of information.
Great teacher. great class. lots of notes taking so dont miss a class. tests are easy if you study notes (MC/eassy). you dont need history book cuz only 1-2 questions show up on the tests that are in the book and not in his lectures. need the other book though. very interesting class. highly recommend his class.
Very interesting lectures! Makes a boring subject come alive, you'll definately leave class knowing history. Highly recommend the class, especially if you aren't interested in history. SEXY voice! Willing to help, willing to listen.
Great teacher! Time passes too quickly in this class, a definate recommendation especially if you don't like history! His quizzes are easy if you take good notes and study from them. You'll love history by the end of the semester.
i didnt like this class at all maybe because i didnt like history to begin with but still mr. codina is all about lecture, as if history isn't boring enough and to top it off his test ccome from that boring lecture. i would suggest buying a tape recorder and listening to him over and over again if you want to pass the class.
It is alllll lecture, but i found it really interesting, he definantly knows his history. you do have to go to class and read the books (which are v boring) but i would take his classes again as i found it v interesting.
umm. i think that all those good comments are the teacher! hes a nice guy but i have not met one person who likes that class and all you hear is "i hope he doesnt come today". his class is BORING. all boring ass lectures. monotone. repetitive. everyday. its nice though that theres no outside homework but thats about it
He keeps at a fast pace but interesting. His style is like reading a good book. All lecture and takes attendance everyday.
He's a good lecturer. His lecures are interesting and makes you want to pay attention. BUT, his tests are on nothing that he lecures!! I read the book and payed attention to hs lectures but still got bad grades on the quizzes.
All lecture. Take lots of notes. Read text. Will give you help if you ask. Lectures are interesting but he moves fast. I got F on first test but once I figured out his style I brought test grades up. History is my worst subject. Gives extra credit. I recommend that you start on it at the beginning of the course.
Mr. Codina is a nice guy, but he is way tooo boring. I sat in the front of the class so I can be alert and pay attention, but his voice was monotone that it would make me fall asleep right in front of him! (How embarrassing!) His tests weren't easy because they were based off the book. And the book was even more boring than Codina. Ehhh!
Real intense teacher, at times he actually yells his subject matter. Doesn't leave helpful comments on his essay tests. He talks extremely fast, which makes the class seem longer. He's fairly knowledgeable, but I think there are better history teachers at Solano.
Not an easy A. I took AP history in HS, and still got a B in this class. The MC tests are HARD, the essays are a little easier. The final is super easy, he gives you the essay question at the beginning of the semester, and allows open book. I actually wrote my paper at home & taped it to the inside of my book. Miss 2 classes and your dropped.
worst professor! ugh.. the stuff he lectures about rarely relates to the tests. if you miss four days of class he WILL drop you.. hes not kidding. we're only 1/2 way through the sem and its already happened. avoid this guy at all costs!!!
ALL LECTURE. grades based on 4 tests & 2 in class essays. each test is 30Q but supposed to cover 4-5 chapters each. too boring for me. took him
DO NOT TAKE! I kept up with the reading, took a million notes in class, studied, and attended every class meeting and I still Failed! I've never failed History before so I was shocked. He's sorta funny and nice i guess but LECTURES EVERY CLASS, no change, so boring.
I enjoyed this class. Attendance is mandetory and necessary to pass but if you keep up on the reading and take good notes in class you shouldn't have any problems...you just can't be lazy!! All around he is a very nice Professor.

It was okay..
For a history class he's really tough. I took this class b/c its required and i thought it'd be an easy A. The class is not easy, he's a tough grader. I would recommend taking a diff. teacher, he's nice but not very committed to the student. He's very particular about what he wants so his grading methods reflect that. Most people failed essay exams
Class grading is EXTREMELY subjective-so there's always a reason to be found as to why your paper falls short. answers must conform exactly to how HE would answer it (am i mind reader?) will dock you for info not lectured on. even if you could memorize the whole book, he doesnt give enough time to regurgitate it! Arrogant and lacks student empathy.
His class is impossible. His tests are too specific and neither the lecture nor the book will help you answer them. For instance, questions on the test are usually as such: Slavery was the fire behind the civil war. A) Very true B) Somewhat true C) Not true. ; His class is very subjective and unless you are a mind reader, you will fail.
Mr. Codina is a wonderful teacher. Like many other students I breezed in thinking it would be easy. My arrogance led me to a couple of D's on tests. Mr. Codina teaches at University level, so yeah its hard and you have to attend class, read the book,go to his office hours and he will help you. He also offers extra credit. I ended up with a B.
Hard class. You have to read book and going to class is a must. If you ask for help, he will help you. Mr. Codina wants his students to actually learn. So, if your looking to just get a grade and not learn, this is not the teacher for you.
Well organized. Gives clear lectures, and tests from notes and assigned reading. Essay question on midterm and final.
all he does is lecture. in the same voice all class, plus his way of making you remember things is repeting it 3 times in the same sentance
Was not my favorite teacher at all. If your looking for an easy A this is not the class for you. He lechure's for 3 hours and then you have to re-read it all in your book. There is no outside help, you either get or you don't. The essay's are graded on his terms even if you study REALLY hard. I did not enjoy this class nor did I enjoy the teacher.
DO NOT TAKE WITH HIM. I GOT A D AND I STUDIED MY BUTT OFf!
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! HE WANT YOU TO READ HIS MIND. I enjoy history. I read all his text, didn't miss class, took note ect...His quiz are misleading. His essays are easy. However, no matter how much you try if you don't answer the way he want you to think you will not get a fair grade.
Just don't take him for history. Plain & simple. His tests are so far off from the lectures it's crazy.
His lectures are highly organized and he tells it like a story. The questions on the quizes come straight from the lecture or book (so you need to read). Besides the 4 quizes you need to do three in class essays which he checks for specific points he wants you to cover. Overall, I think he is a great teacher, you just have to learn the material.
VERY HARD unless you're a history fantatic with no other classes. I've talked to three other people who (like me) have A's in every other class except this one. We're currently getting low C's and D's. He gives you nothing to focus on or guidance. You're expected to just "know" what's important.
The class isn't easy and a lot people seem to not like the class or the teacher because he does teach at a university level. All the test material is covered in class and the thing that probably seems to trip most people are his essay questions.
He is nice but a little weird. Tests are difficult and they are the only thing that determines your grade including essay test questions. Not cumulative!
tests seemed nothing like you covered, class just got tiring and didnt do good. 4 quizzes i believe and you have to read a novel type book also for a couple essays. seems simple but got difficult.
He isn't the easiest class to take but you'll do fine if your a good note taker. Study your notes and you'll pass. His class can get a little boring though.
Presents the material in an interesting manner and is an excellent orator. This is a college level course, don't take it if you're not ready for that level. Didn't use a book at all, except for the final in which you have to read a book (under 200 pages) about Vietnam and answer essay questions based on the book.
He lectures on what he is interested not the chapters in the book that we read. His tests are not even on the book. You have to study hard. I just dropped it because I know I was not going to succeed in his class. I am going to take it online. Horrible teacher
Very interesting lectures. I took his class over a year ago and still remember what I learned from his lectures. Attendance is mandatory, but it's worth it.
His class is soooo boring! only 3 tests and they are hard. The tests are an essay question and some short answers questions which u will have to wrtie...oh yea and he does NOT tell u wat those questions will be.
Unclear what he is looking for on his test. If you don't take good notes and show up for class forget it. Seemed like reading the book was a waste of time. Boring.....so boring. I just dropped the class.
Really good teacher. Class was fun but you still have to study hard for tests.
The hardest C you will ever work for. Very informative if you enjoy History but if looking for an easy A this is not your class
Mr. Codina is an *excellent* lecturer, but you must study, study, STUDY or you will not pass the tests. He gives a few mult. choice exams, and 2 essay exams - these tests are your grade, excepting the optional extra credit, which he does offer.
Extremely hard teacher, doesn't follow the book and what he lectures about is never on the test. Definitely don't recommend him unless you already know a lot about history. Very monotone. But if you ask for help, he will help you. (but doesn't completely help). Typically a B student, almost failed.
Mr. Codina is a good teacher, hes test were easy you just have to read the book and take notes and there is no outside homework which was great! He did however put a lot of people to sleep and made History a lot harder than it needed to be, so if you dont like History dont take him.
Super easy class! Read the book and take notes. I always got A's on his tests. He likes to add a few random notes here and there but otherwise it was like every other history class. No homework except reading and optional essay outlines. I would recommend him to anyone!
If I had read the book my grade woulda been better, but its to late now. He is a teacher that only does lectures and thats it, but I got to say he dosen't make them too boring, since I never fell asleep in his class. Sometimes its all in the delivery and I got to say he makes it sound like he knows what he is talking about unlike some other teacher
Don't take this class if you are looking for an easy A. He has taught this class for 20 years and hasn't updated his lectures or tests since then. Lectures have nothing to do with the book and yet you are still expected to read six chapters for each test. Hard to know what the heck to study. This class is about to break my A average.
He's not a bad teacher, not at all. If you're an auditory learner, this is probably your kind of class. It's hard to tell what's on the test. Sometimes his tests will be purely on notes, other times it could be purely on the chapters. To succeed, you must take notes and pay attention. You must also be willing to dedicate some time to reading.
His class was hard, only because he doesn't make things clear in his lectures. His grading on the midterm essays are really hard! The test are hard, must study lecture notes and read the chapters. Got a 73% in his class
I took this class over the summer, and it was very demanding. Be prepared to read two books and study a lot; I would not recommend taking this class in tandem with another over the summer. The multiple choice tests are easy, but the essays are very tough if you do not include key points. But Mr. Codina is an amazing teacher; very clear and helpful.
Mr. Codina overall is a cool guy, and a pretty decent teacher. He definitely knows History! Dry most times, funny though. His exams are ridiculous though! Almost every question is a trick it seems. Textbooks are a necessity!
Mr. Codina is a funny guy who cares about history. He makes it interesting, but you'll have to do the textbook reading to pass the class. He explains things well, encourages questions, and is willing to help explain anything you need to know. Very good teacher, I would recommend.
Codina is an excellent teacher. He only lectures, so be prepared to take notes the entire class period. Tests are not easy, and you have to read the book to do well. Midterm and final essays are not difficult if you study. He offers 10 extra credit points. Great teacher, I learned a lot but this was definitely not an "easy A" class.
Dont even bother taking notes in his class. his exams arnt even relevant to his lectures. he only likes to talk about what he likes; not whats on the exams. read the book and highlight as much as you can. hes very mono tone so bring coffee to stay awake.
Codina is awesome. I loved his class because he's very knowledgable in history. Prepare to take notes and read the book!! Most of his exams come from the book and his lecture notes you will need for the essays. Overall pretty funny teacher and made history interesting.
He is a good teacher if you're interested in history. Make sure to listen, a lot of what he says is on the test and in the book. He clarifies a lot on what he is focusing on. Just listen and read and you will do fine. Oh, and don't miss more than 3 classes.
I really enjoyed his class. Just the way he teaches is not boring at all. He doesnt use power point, which makes it so much better. So be sure to be ready to do a decent amount of writing since you'll need your notes to study for the quizes.I recived a "c" but it was for an essay I missed.I could have gotten a b by just doing the work.
Though I earned a "B" in the class, it was still very difficult. You need to read the book for every test. There is no class work, only tests. He is a cool guy, but nothing he even spoke on was on the tests. everything was taken from the book. if you test well and are good at writing esay exams take him. Class was just ok.. he just stands in front and talks. Wish he would have presented material in different ways.
He's very boring. Sits at the front of the class and literally talks for 3 hours. What he talks about isn't even on the tests. By the way, his exams don't have any paragraph breaks in them. It's just a bunch of words with no spaces between the questions or answers. Had to drop and I have a 3.5 GPA.
Mr. Codina is a great professor and lecturer. I don't agree with the other reviews on here that say his tests don't have his lecture material, they do. But you definitely have to read the book, because there's plenty book material on the tests. No homework, 5 multiple choice tests, 3 essays. Not a big deal.
Mr. Codina has a good sense of humor and utilizes class time well. He follows his material outline closely and tests accordingly. His multiple choice exams are challenging but not difficult. His grading scale is rather unforgiving, but not unreasonable. The in-class essays require you to be thorough. Adhere to his guidelines and you should be fine.
Love history, but hated American history before I took his class. He only teaches by lecture and sometimes drawing on the board, but he keeps things interesting. His multiple choice exams are tricky, but you can get an A on them if you study the book. His essays are tough - Almost impossible to get an A on. Do extra credit if you want an A.
Codina is great! He's organized, communicates well, and is very specific. He answers your questions thoroughly and is a fair grader. His exams are about 30 questions each and there are 4 throughout the semester, including the final. He's got a sense of humor too! I recommend him and plan on taking another history class with him.
Heads up, this is not an easy history class. Be prepared to read your book - a lot. He lectures throughout the class and I really liked his sense of humor. I took him for 17 and 18 because I liked him as a teacher, NOT because he was easy. If you actually like history and are prepared to do the required reading you'll do well.
Very Smart teacher. He's a nice guy but an extremely boring lecturer. It was hard for me to stay awake most of the time, He doesn't really engage the class. It's just him talking most of the time. bring gum to class, DEFINITELY get the book. You need to do a lot of on your own reading. Exams are fair and not too difficult.
He is a very boring lecturer. Hard tests, Hard grader. Expects a lot for the essays. Include every topic. This includes the final essay. Do not miss class. He will drop you, even if you are sick.
My experience with this professor is that he values his time when class begins and his lectures can be quite dry and long winded. The books that he uses are interesting if you like history. However, the professor could use the online resources which could help students learn history effectively. I will probably take History 18 online next time.
Please save yourself and take another professor. His lectures are so boring that you will be tempted to fall asleep. He does take roll every class so don't miss more than the days allowed. You are going to have to read 2 books and the books are just as boring. No slideshows either. Watched one movie the whole semester.
All he does is lecture all semester long. He pretty much knows his stuff but he can get excessive with the amount of info he gives you, which makes it hard to know what'll be on the tests. Other than that the tests weren't that bad. Hardest part of the class was his essay tests which he graded pretty hard on.
Tough tests- long lectures. Suggest looking for another teacher unless you really love history.
Only take this class if you're a history buff, love self-teaching-- or you absolutely have to.
Prof. Codina is a very smart man. He definitely knows his history. Long lectures but very informative. Took 4 tests and had 3 essays. Not hard if you study and read which he emphasizes throughout the semester. Would definitely take again.
The professor at heart is a great teacher, he teaches more than half the material he tests on. The reading material is sadly not that interesting for those not history buffs, so not reading can and will hurt your grade.
Honestly not an easy class. Wouldn't recommend taking him. Attendance is mandatory. Long lectures. The test are tough, long with him being a tough grader. Had 4 multiple choice test along with 4 essays. He expects a lot on the essays.
His tests are impossible to get an Good grade on, and his essays are even more impossible to pass. He is very vauge on his grading for the essays and he offers no advice for how to improve them. I am a straight A student, and I received a C in his course. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH CODINA. PLEASE. Save yourself.
All you are graded on are tests and essays, the grading system is really weird and allows no wiggle room. The essays are based off your opinion but he grades it as if his opinion is the right way. The only way to bring your grade up is by doing extra credit which is only 10 points so basically nothing. DON'T TAKE THE CLASS!
As a history major and enthusiast, how much Sal cares about the subject really shines through to his lectures. Knows a LOT about the Civil War. He solidified my decision to become a history major. Some things to note; there is a lot of reading, and taking notes during lectures is a must. Tests are mult choice and essays, and you NEED to study hard.
