Wonderful Teacher who knows his stuff very well and cares about students. I highly recommend him.
Gives the information needed to succeed well in the course and is a student's professor, doing the most he can to give everyone the best chance in doing well in the course over any other professor
Super professor! Superb teacher who really goes out of his way to deliver crystal clear lectures. A+
Although his exams are challenging, Dr. Abbas is very good at what he does and really cares about his students.
Excellent professor
Really knows chemistry and loves to teach it
Good teacher, but be prepared to take a lot of notes, he writes everything on the board and all you have to do is copy it down. Doesn't do a lot of example problems though, mainly definitions. Really good grading system.
Professor does not test on everything he covers in lecture, and does not lecture on everything expected in the test. His lectures would be more helpful without several tangents on our worthlessness as students, as these tangents make it hard to follow what he is teaching. Very smart man, very terrible professor.
Excellent prof. Fair, clear, and helpful.
Hard to get him to answer questions.(If you can get him to answer, usually does not answer question you asked instead his version of what he thinks you asked.) Smart man however has a difficult time explaining his thoughts effectively. Has an accent.
His problems on his test and homework are helpful. However, when he lectures. he does it verbally majority of the time. Does not show you all the work, making it hard to understand. sometimes.
His professionalism and courtesy come second only to his willingness to go the "extra mile" in helping students. Do the work and you will succeed in his class.
Excellent, superb, He was a pleasure to be around and at times his lively lectures were as entertaining as they were informative I strongly recommend this professor to all students science majors and non science majors.
Dr. Abbas is the best professor that I have experienced within the scope of my academic career. He is so dedicated to teaching and to the students. He does EVERYTHING within his power to ensure that the students get the most out of the class & from the overall learning experience. He CARES deeply for EACH student! He is an amazing asset to Palomar!
A True master of the subject, fair and easygoing
A true master of chemistry. His lectures are sometimes fast, but comprehendible. Wonderful teacher and would love to have him as a professor anytime. If you are a science major, he is the best professor around. He really knows his stuff.
If you are a math and chemistry genius you will do well. If you are of average intelligence, he'd rather fail you than help you.
Gives clear lectures that are very organized and thorough. Exams are challenging but fair.
He is a good teacher who doesn't mess around. Study the problem sets, if you can do the problem set withought looking at the notes you will do fine on the test.
Good teacher really fair guy and easy grader and cares about his students so much by encouraging them to study which is something not everyone here in palomar does
he encourage you to study, come to class, do hw, etc...he push his student to come half way then he will meet them half way. I will take chem 115 with him again. Very easy grader. I thought i did very bad on the final but the grade come out nicely.
The material is challenging but he wants you to succeed. Really sweet guy who will do all he can to help you. Yes, exams are hard but he is a generous grader. Be prepared to STUDY!
Abbas definitely cares for every student in his class and will bend over backwards to help you out on course material. A generous grader but expects you to pull your own weight. its a tough subject but he's without a doubt the best professor to take chem from
Teaches details of VSEPR, Valence Bond theory, and MO theory in a way that allows you to understand them rather than just memorize like some other professors would tell you. Sam Abbas is the prof to take for chem 110 at Palomar, period.
The best Chemistry teacher ever at both Miracosta and Palomar. He is an easy grader, extremley helpful, very very nice, he knows how to teach and how to work with his students. I would definietely take him for chemistry.
Dr. Abbas is an amazing professor. You can tell he is very passionate about his field of study just by the way he speaks. His enthusiasm for the subject is infectious. I had a great time in this class and I learned so much from Dr. Abbas. He is a very fair grader. Problem sets are always relevant to the exams and he gives many hints during lectures
He is a great professor. Gives clear lectures and is very "student-friendly". His final exam is very very important. I went to the final with an A avg. but did bad on it. I was lucky to get a B.
just do the right thing and study.
Very good at the subject, Dr. Abbas speaks chemistry from his heart and it shows. He explains concepts and has a mountain of patience.
Busy professor but one of the best in the business. He explains concepts well and his exams/quizzes are reasonable and the problem sets come in handy.
Mr. Abbas is an awesome professor who is extremely down to earth and friendly with students. He knows chemistry very well and teaches it well. Attending all the lectures is a must since he tells you exactly what will be on the test. The tests are not difficult as long as you study the material. He is definitely the best professor for chem!!!
At all cost do not take this guy I like chem and know I just want to quit and pick a new major. Whats sad is that people like him and Palomar has let go of one the best teachers (Assad) in order to keep people like him and his wife. Good luck my advise try a diff teacher or go to a new school. Heck even take a semi off.
I don't understand people like the one below. This professor is an awesome teacher who is compassionate and provides every opportunity to help the student. Yet he is part time. Part time. While there are so many incompetent teachers with full time status. Still there are people complaining. They can't even see him be part-time?????
I don't know how any student can say that he is not an excellent professor as Dr Abbas turely cares about all his students and teaches from his heart
Awesome professor who knows how to teach. Make class interesting and has difficult but fair exams.
Excellent lectures that are solid because they cover topics deeply and make ideas clear.
Don't skip class. He clearly states his expectations from day one. He's quite fair and his dry humor is actually entertaining. Be prepared and you'll do well. There's no reason why you should not get at least an A- in this class. READ THE MATERIAL BEFORE LECTURE. You'll know the students that do not choose to do this; such as the comments below.
Professor Abbas clearly cares about his students and is a very fair grader. He tends to wiz through the material so you should definitely come to class already having read it in advance. Consistently keep up with the light load of work and you will have an A. I'm disappointed he's not teaching 110!
Excellent professor who not only gives great lectures but also shows concern for all students and goes the extra mile to help
go to class and ull learn
In Art there are people like Monet, Rodin, and Van Gogh, In college chemistry teaching there are people like Sam Abbas. He does a super job teaching because he does it from his heart.
Dr. Abbas is very knowledgeable and caring. He shares insights and provides missing links about concepts. Recommended highly.
Teaches very well and gives a lot of detail
PURE AWESOMENESS. Commendable 100% Exemplary teaching skills, understands a student's mindset& is willing to invest his time in their education to ensure the best learning experience.Fair grader.I'm very grateful I had him for lab&for the BEST lab group ever! So much fun but I've already said too much :)Thank you for EVERYTHING Dr. Abbas!-Alice
HE IS A BEAST AT CHEM. WOOT GO SAM THE CHEM MAN. TP FALCON ROCK MIRACOSTA
Professor Abbas is a really great teacher who genuinely cares about his students. Chemistry can be really difficult but if you put the time in it and do all the homework, plus a few extra hours of studying per test you should do fine. If he sees you improving he will everything he can to help you. I really liked this professor.
Excellent professor who teaches well and knows how explain
Professor Abbas is the best professor i ever met. this is my first chemistry class in the U.S. and i feel very lucky that i can study it with him. He explain everything clearly and u can get a good grade if u follow him and study =)
Teaches better than any other professor I have had in the last three years in any subject at Palomar. Seems to care about his students and their learning.
Dr. Abbas is a great teacher who has a mountain of patience. Our Lecture professor did not detail explanations of concepts like he did and I was happy to be in his lab.
Dr Abbas is the BEST there is. Chem is difficult, but he cares so much about his students that he will do everything he possibly can to give you the best grade. It is up to you to do the work of studying and HW. He will take all crashers as long as they are in a lab. So switch lec prof to Abbas if you don't have him already!
Hard class, but he really tries his best to help you understand. Great sense of humor. Really wants his students to succeed. Would highly recommend his class! If you really want to understand Chem, take him.
Explains concepts thoroughly and really wants students to succeed. He is a really great chem professor!
I've had 16 different professors in the past year, 13 of those were at UCLA. Sam Abbas ranks in the TOP 3, especially when it comes to developing a student's MINDSET towards college level coursework. Straightforward, exemplary teaching, understands the student and always knows what we need to hear again. Once in awhile USC turns out a good one.. :)
Dr. Abbas is very gifted at delvering excellent lectures that are organized and well-thought. He is a fair grader and his exams are moderately difficult
Fantastic teacher, for easiness and textbook use I only put 3 to emphasize the balance between his work and your work. It's perfectly taught in my opinion.
Dr. Abbas is a good guy, he has a passion for chemistry, but I'm not so sure if lecturing is his thing. He grades his tests very fair, and tries to give you the benefit of the doubt and hold your hand if you will, but his tests are way too difficult for Palomar College, not a 4-year university. Don't ask him questions, he seems to get insulted.
He teaches complicated concepts and throws problems at you that are way over the lvl required for the class. At the same time I think he realizes this and grades super generously. He has a passion for Chemistry and knowledge in general and would love nothing more than to see his students succeed. He wants to teach those who want to learn.
Dr. Abbas is there to help the students...which I can hardly say for some of the other chem professors(just fyi, if you are failing more than half your class, its not the students). The other profs think he is too easy on us. This is not true. He is just fair. He throws a few curve balls in exams but I don't have to have a PhD in chemistry to pass.
What distinguishes Dr. Abbas from other chemistry instructors her at Palomar is that he has passion for the subject and an effective method of teaching and conveying the information sought by the student. His course is NOT very easy but is of moderate difficulty. I think he is an outstanding professor who is fair and courteous.
He's there to make sure you learn the concepts. He grades test VERY fairly, giving half credit if you just attempt it pretty much. Most likely the best choice for a chem lecture. Cons: You only get to see your exams after he grades them, other than that, I literally went through the whole year having not a clue what grade I had on anything (quizzes / homework)
Outstanding, fair, caring, and genuine are tems I would use when describing Dr. Sam Abbas as a professor. If you are reading ratings to decide who gives an easy A... his courses are not for you. If you are trying to find an excellent learning experience, take him.
Dr. Abbas is an outstanding professor who teaches straight from his heart and cares about all his students. If youn want to learn concepts well, you should take him.
Dr. Abbas is a very good professor. he cares about his students. hes definitly not an easy professor. he wants u to work to earn your grade. hes very nice person to talkt to. he is hard so work hard. btw dont take chemistry over summer b/c u will eat breath sleep and everything w chem. he has quizzes often and checks labs so dont bs them. work good
Any professor who can teach chem 115 very well so that students understand it is an excellent professor. Dr. Abbas did exactly that last summer. He is also fair and helps his students.I don't understand the one or two students who say otherwise. My advice is be honest and get a life. He does not hand in free As and Bs but you can earn them
110 is taughte very well by Dr. Abbas. He has passion for the subject and really prepares you for 115.
He was a hard but understanding teacher.
Dr. Sam Abbas is Chem 110 guru and anyone who tells you otherwise is not being truthful. Yes, his class requires work and is not an easy A but who wants an easy A? I highly recommend him for anyone who wants to learn.
It is been almost 2 years since i took professor abbas's chem110 class. i took his chem115 in 2011 summer. both of these classes are just wonderful to me! I love chem and i love this professor. Though i changed my major, i still wish in future Abbas can teach all my other classes. :)...choose Abbas or Brandon, they all very nice an helpful!
I had him for both Lab and Lecture. Not an easy A, requires a lot of work and reading. Dr. Abbas is extremely fair and really goes out of his way to help his students pass. Highly recommend taking him for chemistry!
He is very nice and willing to help but is ridiculously hard!!!!!! OMG DO NOT TAKE HIM. He spends 80% of the class writing on the board as you copy down everything then talks for 10 minutes and has you do 100s of problems based on the notes he gives! Horrible! Self-taught basically. AVOID AVOID.
He's very enthusiastic about the subject. He goes great into detail. He does speed through some parts of his lecture notes so you got to jot down the important information. Quizzes are unannounced (even though some were announced) and tests were somewhat difficult. You got to really study and dedicate your time to the material to pass this class.
He is challenging and fair. He lectured before certain labs to help us better understand concepts. He is easily approachable and always available to help. Very respectful and encouraging. Not an easy A, you must study and learn Chemistry. He also has a really good grading system. Easily one of the best professors at Palomar.
Dr. Abbas is a master of general chemistry who teaches fairly and from his heart
Dr. Abbas is very passionate about what he teaches and is totally willing to help students when they do not understand the material. He often gives hints on what to study, so pay attention to what he writes on the board. He was my favorite Chemistry teacher at Palomar, take his class if you can.
He is great teacher, will everything he can to help his students 5 quizzes , drops 2..3 tests and he replaces your lowest grade with the final and if you get a A in the fine he will be willing to replace 2 of your tests. Homework is due once a week just to help your grade. Lots of partial credit .
Abbas is a solid professor. Awesome guy, who really cares about his students. It's not an easy class, but it's definitely manageable. It about putting the work in. He appreciates when you show effort and will reward you for it. If you genuinely give the class your best effort you will come out with the grade you want. Take him over any other prof.
Abbas is a great professor. Goes greatly into detail of every concept. Quizzes are announced, but are feasible. Tests aren't that bad, just got to study and put effort. Gives a lot of partial credit and he really helps his students out to get a good grade by dropping lowest quiz, lowest test, and replacing Finals grade with lowest test after drop.
Sam Abbas is a very good professor who teaches well and cares about his students. He always finds ways to clarify things and gives students multiple opportunities.
Hands down best chem professor ever. If you work hard and study hard, easy A. I wish he taught o-chem!
Dr. Sam Abbas Teaches very well and from his heart. he goes above and beyond to help make concepts clearer but does not automatically pass people. Who should???
Lab with him is a joke. every time i ask for help or clarification on how to do a lab, he rolls his eyes and act like i should already know. I just try to double-check only when im not sure. The 3hour time period we are prisoners for an hour and a half because he doesn't want to look bad and have us all leave cause he has nothing else for us to do.
Dr. Abbas is very good at dealing with students and at explaining things. I had a positive experience last semester in his lab and ended up with a B. You have to work hard.
Do not recommend at all. He doesn't explain concepts well at all and expects you to do reviews at the end of book chapters without knowing how to do it so plan on sitting all night going through the book and online for help. If you ask a question he acts like you should already know it and then gives you a confusing answer. I regret taking him.
Very genuine professor and really does everything in his power to help you get a good grade in the course. HOWEVER he really makes you earn the grade. His exams are mostly calculation based and he does not provide any formulas for the exams. You pretty much have to memorize them as you go. I know it seems intimidating, but trust me, its beneficial.
Worst class I have taken! Too many calculations. He doesn't explain things well. Entire semester consisted of me studying too much for his class and made me fall behind on my other classes. Passed lab but even though I showed up every single class failed his lecture.
He really tries his hardest to make you pass the class. Just be sure to attend most classes and study and you'll get an A. He believes in his students and is there to help.
Professor Abbas was a very tough teacher. He seems to want to help you pass, but he can be very unclear and his study guides are hit or miss as far as helpfulness goes. You might end up studying a lot of stuff you don't need. Study the calculations and dedicate your whole life to chemistry and you should pass. Also, don't miss class!!!
If you like to be lectured on stuff other than Chemistry, Abbas might be for you. I personally felt like he was always yelling. He also has a very abrasive personality. Class is mandatory, even lecture. I got an A but it took a lot of work. I will not take another class of his. He had no office hours and questions made him upset.
Very devoted and dedicated to his students, Dr Sam Abbas was a pleasure to learn from. He truly is a student advocate and is more than fair but he tries to maintain rigor and standard.
Excellent professor who teaches and cares
Dr. Abbas is an extremely helpful teacher who really wants his students to do well. Show up to every class, really put in the time and effort, and you will pass. I enjoyed him as a person and as a professor. He gives you every chance to pass, treat him with respect and he will do all he can for you. Take him and you will not regret it.
Professor Abbas is an amazing teacher and really tries his best each and every class to reach out to students and inspire them. He motivates you everyday to keep up the hard work. By far the best Chem teacher there is at Palomar college . I would highly recommend him to anyone who has to take chemistry.
Incredible Professor, changed my life and did what I thought could never be done, gave me a love for Chemistry. Study hard and put effort and you'll get a good grade.
He was one of my top professors. He truly cares for his students. make a good impression and he will take care of you. Lots of homework (online, pretty hard, 2-3 hours per chapter). If you take him for lab he really stresses lab reports ( 7-10 pages for each lab). Go to office hours and you will be golden.
Abbas is a great professor. He also gives encoring talks throughout the semester which really help boost your confidence. The material is difficult so expect to spend extra time in the STEM center.
He's nice and a lenient grader; he'll give you partial credit for attempting, but that is how I passed this class, the lectures are insufficient to understand the material so if you're not already a chemistry and math whiz prepare to spend a lot of time at the library and be stressed and frustrated the entirety of this course. Take Math 126 before.
Prof. Abbas seems to be caring and his grading isn't too tough.. BUT the lectures are not in any way sufficient for this class. The test questions are hilariously difficult and are outright impossible to some degree. He expects us to know things that are "common knowledge", which they would be if you have a degree from chemistry. Don't recommend.
