Dr. Abbas is very caring and helpful. He knows his stuff and is there to help students who put effort. Eventhough I have a C average, I think he s an excellent instructor and my C is a reflection of my work.
If you're trying to take chem 1B, don't take him. He might be a nice person but his teaching is very bad, pretty much 90percent is based on you. You have to do the exercises on the back of the book and read the book to understand the concept. I worked really hard for this course and my grade is 86 percent. Good luck.
Dr. Abbas is an excellent professor who teaches well and is very caring towards his students.
Dr. Abbas teaches very well and is very kind to his students. The course is tough and requires a lot of time dedication.
not helpful at all
Dr. abbas is very good at the subject and very kind to his students. People who do not do very well in his class are ones who do no put a lot of effort as he gives his students a lot of chances and extra credit.
He is the worse professor i ever had, if u want to take his class make sure u know how to study by your self.
Difficult class that requires A LOT of studying and work outside of class. Tests and quizzes are hard but extra credit is offered and dedication is rewarded. No office hours was a drawback.
I agree that this is not the easiest class I've ever taken. It requires some work, but if you put in the effort & do the problems you can succeed. Dr. Abbas is very nice & helpful and there is extra credit (homework, worksheets before exams). He takes a long time to grade the labs & quizzes but is better when it comes to exams.
He is a great teacher, the kind that pushes you to really search for and understand the answers, not just memorize things. Lectures where better if you read the material before hand (i.e. the textbook and the powerpoints). Labs are more enjoyable if you read them before hand and do any of the prelab problems. In summary, hard work equals an A.
I am completing chem1B with Dr. Abbas now. Simply put, he is an awesome professor who teaches very well and really cares about his students. His course is not an easy A but he is more than fair.
Dr. Abbas is great. He teaches very well and from his heart. The course is tough but balanced.
Dr. Abbas is amazing as a professor and as an individual. His teaching is phenomenal and he has a heart of gold. Highly recommended. Piece of advice, do not judge his class from the first week: Be patient and hang in there.
Dr. Abbas is a true master of the subject and has a very easy going attitude whereby even if he makes a seldom mistake or calculation error, he is gracious and respectuful and is nor arrogant like some other professors. I had the best of both worlds: Fier for 1A and now Abbas for 1B
Dr Abbas is a very effective teacher who is also compassionate. Highly recommended.
Professor Abbas is gifted and accomplished at what he does. His love for chemistry is infectious. His energy and enthusiasm make his chem 1B course a unique experience
Professor Abbas is extremely knowledgeable in what he teachers, his tests are somewhat difficult as he puts problems that he knows only 5 students will be able to solve. Overall a very decent course, I ended with a B. Lots of hard work.
Prof. Abbass is one of the most compationate chem professors you can have. He is really clear and to the point, and such a really good hearted guy. This class is Mega hard with intense labs, but if you are going to take his class, prof. abbass has such a way to alleviate the pain. Great guy and you would be really lucky too have him.
If you want to learn take it with someone else. Majority of students used online videos/outside resource to clarify lectures. Has no interest in explaining the labs. He throws you into the lab and is busy checking his emails. if you try to ask a question he tells you to come back later hes busy. Abbass should prob stick to research.A
I'm an A student and took the summer class with him. He was truly one of the worst teachers I have ever had! He gives you other professors' labs, because he is too lazy to write his own labs. He will LIE to your face that he will help you on your grades if he sees you trying but he won't. Run away.. Don't take it with him!!
Dr. Abbas is a phenomenal teacher who cares a lot about his students. The summer course is very fast-paced but he manages it very well and has a generous grading system. You have to work hard but the course is doable and he is very helpful.
Dr. Sam Abbas may be slightly tough but he is an outstanding educator who is a big student advocate. Professors DO NOT WRITE THEIR OWN LABS, THE DEPARTMENT GIVES THEM LABS TO FOLLOW. He likes lecture more than lab but is fair.
Dr. Sam Abbas is one of the best professors I have ever taken. He is an authority in his field and is very humble and caring. The course is involved so you have to work hard but his generous grading system will reward your effort.
I had to utilize the book so much for this course to clarify what the professor tries to teach, it should be the other way around. He assigns book homework & his quizzes are easy. Exams are super difficult. Doesn't give back homework, quizzes or exams. We have 1 week left in the course & he has only graded and gave back 9 out of the 22 labs!
Dr. Abbas is very kind and is a good teacher because he simplifies difficult concepts and he actually cares about his students. I am guessing that the bad review is from one of the three stooges who sit in one cluster always laughing and annoying the class. Even to those morons, Dr. Abbas is courteous. He has given us 15 of the 23 labs back so far.
He is the best chemistry teacher at saddleback. He knows how to teach the material in a simple way and goes out of his way to make sure his students understand the subject. His test are straight forward and Easy if you study the notes and read the book. I definitely recommend him.
Dr. Abbas is very generous with his partial credit, and and his grading curve is also very generous as well. I am not fond of his lecturing style, and his exams are near impossible to ace. He is a challenging teacher, and I think his teaching style would be better suited for higher chemistry classes. Take this class alone!
...(from previous post) PROFESSOR, IF YOU READ THIS: Having visual aids in the form of powerpoint will greatly improve the lectures. It is hard to picture what happens to the orbitals when drawing free hand. I have to rely on the book a lot. Professor Abbas has great knowledge but I think that he has a teaching style that I haven't encountered yet.
GUYS. Dr. Abbas DOES briefly explain some labs. You are required to read your lab for the day anyways, which explains the labs. And students do call him Dr. Abbas. (Notice that that post had an honest review). Dr. Abbas does try to help, but his point is unclear sometimes and hard to get across. I like you as a preson, not as my professor...
Dr. Abbas is very clear and helpful, with very good personality. He was one of the best professors I have ever had. I highly recommend him.
Dr. Sam Abbas is an outstanding teacher who is very passionate about chemistry and cares about his students. He emphasizes lecture more than lab.
I am Taking Abbas now for chem1B and while You may or may not like him, he is a good teacher who knows what he is doing and who shows concern about his students.
Clear lectures, well-defined course and a caring approach are what define Dr Sam Abbas's approach
Excellent teacher who cares about his students learning the most. I was afraid to take the class because of what some students had posted but take my advice: none of it is true.
Chem 1b is a difficult course in 16 weeks let alone 8 weeks, this professor loves his job and is super passionate and will do ANYTHING to help you get the grade you not only want, but deserve. Pull your weight, and you'll get what you work for. 100% would take him again, wish he taught Ochem! Kindest man ever.
Honestly, Professor Abbas is the BEST! If you have a chance to take him, do it. He is very generous with his partial points, he truly wants to see you succeed, and he has the best motivational speeches. I would take him for all my chem classes
Chemistry was a really hard subject for me but professor Abbas was very helpful and will work with you if you're having trouble. He will give you partial points for your tests and assigns extra credit if needed. He does not take attendance but going to class is crucial in getting a good grade.
Abbas is an awesome professor. He gives you fair credit on your quizzes and tests and also gives extra credit. His labs are easy and fun, easy to learn from him. I highly recommend him, stress free but still really good at teaching.
He is a good professor! But a lot of students have his labs, quizzes and exams! This not fair to students are studying hard!:-(
Excellent teacher who has high standard but still teaches great
Very inspirational teacher.
He is so helpful and really wants his students to succeed
Great Prof
Exam 3 was tough today but it is all book based and can be done.
Amazing professor and person
Dr. Abbas is an outstanding teacher and a big student advocate. I would take him again and again!
I took Chem 1A 4 years ago, got a C, and hated chem, until this class. Abbas made me understand every aspect. He will work with you to get the grade you want if you put in the work. His lectures are great, but I also used YouTube as a supplement. When you have the same concept explained by several experts, it makes it easy. Work hard, get an A
Excellent teacher
Great teacher who teaches very well and from his heart
Dr. Abbas is very comprehensive in his approach. He is caring but does not spoon-feed answers. You have to work!
Not an easy A but Dr. Abbas is very supportive of his students and is more than fair.
Professor Abbas is truly one of the greatest professors at Saddleback. He truly cares for his students and wants nothing but the best for them. He is knowledgeable and truly dedicated to his profession. He tries to help you as much as he can but you have to put in the effort as well. I look forward to seeing him again.
Prfessor Abbas is an excellent teacher. I really admire him.
Abbas is a class act as a teacher and person
Professor Abbas is the best chemistry professor there is. His lectures are clear and concise and he is a big student advocate. He is easily accessible outside of class. Chemistry is not an easy class and you still have to work for your grade, but he is very understanding and provides extra credit opportunities and extends deadlines.
Connects very well with students and explains most topics with high clarity. Highly recommended. I just completed a challenging but rewarding summer 1A class that was very fast paced and ended up with a B and a lot of concepts that I learned well. Thanks Dr. Abbas.
Dr. Abbas cares about his students but he is very strict in so many things. He doesn't let you leave the lab early if you finish early, doesn't bump up your grade at all. His tests are EXTREMELY harder than the lecture and quizzes. He doesn't really see or care how much effort you put. we had three people got F in the class. I got my first C!
His first time teaching 12A at Saddleback but he is very caring and goes the extra mile to help you understand and be confident. I like his approach.
When you take his class you can tell that you are learning from a master. He is more than qualified as a professor, and he is also one of the most inspirational and caring people I have ever met. Hands down, he is the best chemistry professor at Saddleback. If I had to choose someone to be my dad, I would choose Professor Abbas.
My favorite chemistry teacher of all time. I have taken two courses with him, Chem 3 (HS chem) and Chem 1B.I took both of these while in high school and had no problem understanding the concepts due to his teaching skills and methods. He is an exceptional teacher that will help you do as well as possible as long as he sees you trying.
Great Teacher, fair and caring.
He is an amazing professor in the chemistry department at Saddleback. He goes the extra mile for each and every one of his students, and wishes for them all to do extremely well. He is very dad-like in the sense that he truly cares.
Professor Abbas is the most caring professor and wants to see every one of his students succeed. Very lecture intensive, so do not skip any lecture days if you want to pass. Get ready to read your textbook multiple times to understand the concepts. This is a tough class, but he does everything in his power to help you understand.
Chem 12A is a very detail-oriented heavy duty course. Dr. Abbas did an excellent job at making what otherwise would be overwhelming. Let us face it, the workload is on us as students we have to be disciplined and dedicated. I say this because occasionally a few of my classmates would get frustrated. I will tell you take this class and work hard.
He is nice professor. his lecture are not from him. sometimes he teachs but sometimes he just read through power points and sometimes lectures are not very clear. his exams is super hard but if you study hard and show you work for he helps and graded is and also extra credit points.
Everyone has the ability to pass this class. Take advantage of Prof. Abbas's knowledge, he is more than willing to help you gain a better understanding of any topic; Be prepared to work hard each day to keep up with the class, a variety of topics are covered throughout the semester, each varying in difficulty.
Very nice teacher who cares for his students. He doesn't spoon feeds answers to you and wants you to really think a problem through. He gives quizzes every week (1 quiz per chapter) so be sure to review each chapter. Exams are a lot harder than quizzes so be sure to really understand the concepts. Gives credit for effort even with wrong answers.
He is the best chemistry teacher I've ever had. This class is intense and requires a lot of work but his tests are not confusing and are pretty straight forward. He is very caring and is a great human being.
Hardest I ever had to work for a class; however it isn't the professor's fault it is just that hard of a class. Abbas is the best teacher I have ever had and he encouraged me more than anyone ever has. He legitimately cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He goes above and beyond to help his students in this very difficult class.
Excellent class and professor but one of the hardest classes I have ever taken.
Dr. Abbas is the best professor in the chemistry department at Saddleback. Don't hesitate to sign up for his class. He teaches from the textbook and does not put questions on the exam that he does not cover in class. He goes above and beyond for his students.
Dr. Abbas is great.
Dr. Abbas is an amazing teacher because he is capable of delivering very difficult concepts in an easy to understand manner. He also shows genuine care towards each and every of his students. The course is an extensive 14 chapters where in the first five chapters, you have far exceeded all materials in 1A and 1B combined so hard work is the way.
Sam Abbas is one of the best professors I have seen anywhere.
I've attended both UC's and community college classes and Abbas is the best by far. He makes an effort to find ways to teach you as an individual and cares so much. He knows so much, and is good at communicating it, which is often unique for math and science departments where teachers are brilliantly smart, but not great at actually teaching.
Dr. Abbas is a very dedicated teacher who supports all his students by inspiring them to learn and without inflating grades. He teaches very well and is passionate about it and you can tell that immediately when you go to his classroom.
SO MUCH READING. His lectures cover the course briefly, and you need to read the entire book and memorize it cover to cover to even PASS. His exams are SUPER DIFFICULT and are darn right impossible to Ace. BE CAREFUL. He is not open to questions either and will berate you for DARING to even ask. Don't take this guys class and save yourself.
Great Teacher who teaches very well and volunteers to give Friday morning Supplementary discussions/ exam preview sessions. Chem 1A is a tough class and it is harder for me because it is a summer class.
One of the best teachers I have ever had in any college course. He cares and works with you and you can feel it. He answers questions patiently and with enthusiasm. If he taught five courses, I will take all of them.
Great professor. Very respectful. Lecture great. He is a very nice man. I did not took a lot of time for this course, I just studied his lecture and did the homework and got an A. Just study what he teach, and care a little bit for your class, then you will get A. guarantee.
I am finishing chemistry 1A with dr. Abbas now and I don't know what the student below is saying: While Sam Abbas is by far my favorite teacher and he shows lot of passion for the teaching profession and truly cares about his students, he makes you work for it and his class is not easy but moderately difficult.
Abbas is a great caring professor, but you have to work for your A or B. If you pay attention to the lectures, read the book and complete the back of the book questions for each chapter, you will be fine. Read the pre-labs to find exceptions for certain chemical reactions, you will see them on the tests or final exam. I would gladly take him again
Best teacher thus far in all my courses at Saddleback
Great Teacher who is fair and goes above and beyond for all his students. The course is massive and a ton of work.
Best Science Teacher Ever and very caring.
Amazing organic professor and a great human being
Tough class. Great teacher.
Abbas is a really nice guy that truly wants his students to succeed. However, lecture is a lot to take in and requires time outside of class to really understand concepts. He gives quizzes for every chapter (11 total) and 5 exams. He's willing to help but may come off a bit strong with the way he talks. Be nice to him and he will be nice back :)
He cares alot about students however some of his policies make the class overly difficult. He keeps your homework so you have no reference unless you like to having 300 pictures. The workload is doable but high, beware of burnout. I get the impression that other sections are easier with different professors.
His lectures are not very insightful as he just reads from the PPT slides. But, if you are willing to put the work in, he will reward you. Labs are extensive and homework takes forever. He is incredibly generous with partial credit and extra credit. Despite it being a hard class, he inspires you to be your best. Such a great guy!
Great teacher and very helpful
Professor Abbas is the BEST professor I have ever taken. He is so generous, fair, and wants to help in every way possible. He truly wants the absolute best for his students. Highly recommend taking Professor Abbas!
He is a highly respected professor but I would not recommend this class to anyone taking other hard classes at the same time. Its 7 credits, the most difficult class I've ever taken. If you do, please please please socialize with others and find a group to study with. You will be surviving on the tutor even if you took chem 3 the semester before.
I took this class my first semester at Saddleback. I ended up getting an A with hard work and commitment. This class will take a lot of time away from other tasks. Make sure you find a group to study with. 100% visit with the embedded tutor and Professor Abbas's office hours. Dr. Abbas is such a caring professor and I will definitely take him again
his class is not very student friendly. its kind of a mess to be honest and a lot of things overlap with exam days. hes also the type of professor that thinks having people memorize things is a good way of learning. i barely got by an A and i honestly believe it had more to do with the structure of the class rather than me not studying.
Professor abbas is a really nice but I feel that the way he teaches is not the best for students. Things may have changed since I took his class around fall 2018 but I always found that I was teaching myself things. His exams were so impossible to get good grades on, I can remember we had about 3-4 people who dropped after the 2nd test.
I am not sure why recent ratings for Dr. Abbas are saying negative things. As a student who had the chance to take him for 1A through 12B, I have the ability to give a fair judgement for his teaching skills and his unique ability to inspire students. He was the best professor I have ever had in my college career and always put his students first.
Excellent professor who teaches from his heart and care for his students!!
Do not recommend at all. He doesn't explain concepts well at all and expects you to do reviews at the end of book chapters without knowing how to do it so plan on sitting all night going through the book and online for help. If you ask a question he acts like you should already know it and then gives you a confusing answer. I regret taking him.
Unfortunately I happen to take this class the semester everything went online due to the pandemic, but Abbas was the most understanding prof, from allowing extra time on homework assignments to even lab reports and tests. You can tell he worked extremely hard because you'd receive announcements at 4 am. GREAT professor, I wish he taught chem 12B.
He put all his effort to help students. When you come out the class, you will know everything about all materials. If you have plan to take MCAT and DAT, this class will be very useful for you and you can see the result there.
You will a lot and his caring for students is evident.
Very Lecture heavy and most of the information from it is simply read directly off the power point slides with little to no explanation. 4 hours of lecture a day plus an additional 1-2 hours of homework plus 2-3 hours of studying and labs is a lot of work that is made harder with his teaching method of requiring us to memorize it all.
One of the best professors I have had in my 3 semesters at Saddleback. Very caring, supportive, and good at teaching.
Professor Abbas is extremely caring and gives you every opportunity to do well in the class if you care about doing good. You have to actually put in the effort, and he will reward you for that fact if he sees you working hard. Pay attention to the PPT lectures and give time to the class every night and it will pay off in test grades. Great class!
Prof Abbas is a great. The content is extremely difficult so you have to prepare to dedicate time to study and do homework outside of lecture time. You shouldn't solely depend on his teachings to understand the topics. He is understanding so if you have any issues, just reach out to him. He puts a lot of effort to ensure that his students learn.
Very confusing and gets mad when you ask questions. He claims that he knows what he is doing but everyone is just lost.
I've heard that he is a better teacher in person, but if you have to take him online do yourself a favor and just don't. He does not give any feedback on the labs or tests, so you will repeat the same mistakes on them, and there is no room for improvement. He gets mad when you ask him a question or want feedback. His lectures don'tcover everything
Professor Abbas teaches a very difficult class - its safe to say that chemistry isnt a popular major for a reason - but he has so much knowledge and a strong passion for sharing this knowledge, its great. Multiple times we got notifications and emails sent out at 3 or 4 am because he was up late grading and giving us specific feedback. Take him!
Professor Abbas does not give out As. But he will make you work immensely for a B. That is, if you teach yourself the material. His lectures and office hours are of little to no help.
Sam Abbas was great at teaching a tough organic chem class during COVID-19 while still being able to make sense via zoom and left a personal touch that inspired most students. This was a sparkle that my friends and I often talked about in our chat study group. He gives a good amount of extra credit and cares!
I took Professor Abbas during the start of the COVID pandemic. He was great at adapting - much more than many of my professors - and he helped us tremendously by filming videos of the experiments we were supposed to do while giving us detailed explanations for those difficult concepts. Approachable for feedback - I strongly reccomend him.
Dr. Abbas is without a doubt my favorite chemistry professor. He goes above and beyond to help his students and gives you all of the tools you need in order to be successful in his courses. He is very inspirational and truly cares about his students. Attend office hours, put in the work, and be sure to ask questions and you will do amazing!
Half of the semester grades were put on online a week after the finals. Does not give feedback. I do not recommend him.
I love Professor Abbas. I liked him so much in CHEM 1B that I took him for organic chemistry as well. Def top 3 professors. When I took his course I needed extra help and would always go to his office hours. I did not even have questions but he would review in office hours with us anyways and prepare us for quizzes and exams. He cares a lot/helps!
When you take courses from a teacher who likes what they do, you will feel it in their teaching. Take Abbas and you will see why he is a great professor who makes believers out of most of his students. I enjoyed chem 1A and 12A with him and will always be thankful for his re-sparking my love of learning.
Dr. Abbas is great. Very compassionate and devoted to his students. I am not sure what the" most helpful rating means" but I took him for 1A and 12A and got As in both and he was very supportive.
Basically, his teaching method is that his work is hard, and extra credit makes up for it. The slides and lectures don't ring true to the exams and quizzes. The slides show easy versions of the problems and the tests show much harder ones. You are really gonna work in this class but do all the extra credit you can. Just be aware.
One of the best professors that I have had at both SB and IVC. Abbas is very compassionate and treats his students like friends. I strongly recommend his classes as I took 1A and 12A with him and he was very good and very patient with us.
I never met someone as caring as professor Abbas. He genuinely cares about students and he wants the best to each one. He is very lenient, and I personally like his class because he doesn't spoon feed you the material, and the reason for that is because he wants you to self-study to prepare you to how universities work. Hard lecture, but lots of EC
He is in it for the students. The pandemic has been tough on everyone and he really understands that. He gives extra credit opportunities and grades very well with a lot of partial credit. I would take the whole chemistry series with this professor if I could.
Great professor, was really able to help you apply, learn material, & laboratories. Makes himself available for difficulties. The interval of assignments w/ lectures was key, assigned exercises where discussed with the prof and classmates. If you simply apply yourself with what has been assigned you will be fine. Would take him again!
He's very lenient and is willing to work with the students! :D
Great professor! He is determined to help students understand the material. Class is not easy but he is there to help! Thorough lectures and do not skip the suggested homework! He really wants his students to succeed and not give up
Organic chemistry is far from easy but professor Abbas gave us the maximum amount of credit possible and really wanted to see us succeed which I really appreciate as a student. Couldn't have asked for a better online experience with O Chem!
Outstanding teacher who really cares about all of his students. I was lucky to take him in 2018 and go on to graduate from UCI and land a great position.
Honestly the best chemistry professor I have ever had. This teacher wants every one of his students to pass his class and he will do everything possible to help you get an A. He provides constant extra credit, his grading is extremely lenient, and I hope to take his class in the future. 11/10 would recommend.
An outstanding professor and very humble person, he made all of us feel welcome like we were his friends and did not throw curved balls in both 12A and 12B. The courses are both tough because it is organic chem, man! What I really appreciated about him is that he was compassionate, fair, and inspiring.
Professor Abbas doesnt make this already difficult class easy by any means. Exams are challenging/ unpredictable and missing lecture will exclude you from receiving necessary hints about what to study for. That being said, he provides lots of extra credit, buffers your grade by dropping lowest scores and was always enthusiastic to answer questions
He makes things more difficult than they should be and asking for help often results in more confusion because he'll usually circle around the question. I relied on peer tutors and youtube videos to get by in his class. I'd definitely consider other professors first before you decide to take his class. Just my opinion.
I feel so grateful to have had him for Chem 12A and to be in his Chem 12B class now! Organic chem is hard, but Prof Abbas is encouraging and understanding. Hard work and dedication is highly rewarded. Highly recommend taking him for a positive learning environment and a fair chance to succeed! Work hard and you'll get the grade you want.
I had Dr. Abbas for chem1A, and I am currently in his chem1B. He has been one of the most knowledgeable, inspirational, and supportive professors I have had at SB or IVC. He has a way of initiating the spark for learning and makes me and fellow students feel that we belong in his classroom, and I love every bit of it!
Lectures are confusing and lots of mistakes are made. He makes it much harder than it needs to be. Exams do not reflect the lecture material. Does not give feedback on lab reports. He is not inviting to student questions. Very stressful class. Avoid!
Dr. Abbas is very caring and this show through his consideration of every student as a valuable contributor in the class. I had a positive experience in his chem 1A and 12A and would recommend him without reservations.
I really like Dr. Abbas's style of teaching and making all of the students feel that they belong in his classroom and lab. After the third week or so of class, I was impressed to see that he knew all of our names and he teaches in a way to maximize your learning so that you can work with all cases and tweaks.
One of the most empowering teachers I ever saw in my college courses so far. He is fair and caring but makes you work for the grade.
Professor Abbas is an overall good professor, not great, but also not bad. A 7.5/10 on a scale. There's nothing much I can say, he's encouraging, but kinda petty depending on your class. His mood can change the vibe of the class, but nothing terrible. Good Luck!!
Dr. Sam Abbas is very good at teaching and a very kind professor who goes above and beyond for each every one of his students. I just completed both chem 1A and chem 1B with him and I could not have asked for a better professor.
I went through about 2 Chemistry teachers before I found Prof Abbas. I took both 1A and 1B. I was going to continue with Prof Abbas for 12A and 12B but my transfer has changed. I enjoyed the classes for the tough lectures, and fun lab experiments. For questions ask before and after lecture go to office hours and . Overall a wonderful professor.
Great teacher in 1A and 1B and I am looking forward to 12A and 12B
Great experience in both chem 1A and chem 1B with Dr. Abbas. I am looking forward to organic!
Professor had very confusing lectures and extremely disorganized. Made the subject a lot more difficult than it needed to be. Would not recommend.
I cannot imagine how someone can say negative things about my favorite professor at Saddleback. Dr. Abbas is a powerhouse in the STEM area at Saddleback and a huge student advocate, take his classes and verify for yourself like I did. Excellent professor and a great mentor.
One of the best organic chemistry professors. He is organized, explains things well, and to the point and while the exams are hard, he prepares you for them.
Professor Abbas is extremely disorganized and it can be difficult to absorb content. Not clear on what to study and what not to study. Labs are disorganized and lectures are confusing. Good luck.
Professor Abbas is difficult and assignments are unclear. Lecture exams are not reflective of lecture content, so it is difficult to know how to focus your studies. I struggled finding enjoyment in the subject, but i have previously loved chemistry. I would not recommend.
Horrible experience with abbas for 1A. Often came late and ended class early to leave us on our own. Was not helpful in lab and sent us to the hallway to do calculations on our own. Exams did not reflect lecture material. Forget finding him during office hours. He is never there. Do not recommend
Dr. Sam Abbas was by far one of the best professors I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. He went above the call of duty to help all of my classmates and always showed us that he cares. He spent more time than his scheduled office hours for some days to make sure that he answered all of my questions.
Great Organic chemistry professor who truly cares about students. Very inspirational stories shared in both semesters.
This is the best professor I have ever had for a chemistry class. He is a teacher who truly cares about his students. His office hours are really important. For 12a you can use a pdf of the textbook, lab manual, and solutions manual. The tests are tough but if you put in the hours necessary you can do great and he will help make sure of that.
get ready to hand write all the chapter problems. lots of homework and he does not give a good feedback on the lab reports unless you ask him to. overall, organic chemistry is very time consuming and he tries his best to help the students with office hours but work load is a lot to handle especially if you are a full time student.
Homework takes up all the time and there is little time to study for the tests. His class is very tough. He does not give feedback on the lab reports and grades them very late. Organic chemistry is a difficult subject and it takes a lot of practice. His slides and textbook are very useful for the quizzes.
Organic Chemistry is difficult, but Dr. Sam Abbas made it easy to grasp and do well in. I only needed to take 12A for my program and my experience was 9/10!
his class is not really inspiring. there is so much work which makes it hard to focus on the tests. takes a lot of points off of lab reports and gives no feedback. would definitely not recommend him for organic chemistry
Great teacher and very inspirational. Courses in 12A and 12B are a lot of work no matter what; Abbas made them reasonable and kept us engaged.
absolutely would not recommend him for organic chemistry. the amount of workload is heavy in his class. his grading system is worse. you are required to hand write all the question and answers for every chapter and yet he gives you the lowest grade. he does not give feedback on the labs and grades them late.
Dr. Abbas was one my best teachers at Saddleback last year. I am at UC Berkeley and have benefited enormously from his depth of coverage in 12A and 12B. He treated us like his little siblings and saw potential in all of us.
Outstanding professor! Dr. Abbas really cares about his students and inspired me to do well in his class
Great teacher! Dr. Abbas Loves his students and empowered us to do our best.
I will not lie, his class is not going to be a walk through the park. But he cares for his students more than most if not all other professors at Saddleback and the reason his class is hard is to prepare you! He is an amazing and empowering professor and he has my utmost respect. 10/10.
Great professor, TAKE
Best professor I have ever taken. His teaching style is so empowering and continues to inspire me and my peers. You must take this professor, you will not have a bad time.
I took 1B and 12A with Dr. Abbas; my experience was nothing short of amazing! I used to hate chemistry, however, Dr. Abbas made me love it! He is a goldmine of knowledge and is very compassionate and empowering. He genuinely wants you to learn and understand the material. Definitely try and take him for the whole chem series, you won't regret it!
Abbas made Chemistry 1b interesting and reasonable to deal with!
He's very nice and incredibly accommodating. But he races through lectures by showing pre-done examples, asking if there are any questions, and sometimes embarrasses students for asking questions. His exams are insanely difficult nothing like the hw, lecture slides, assigned review problems, or even the in-class review he hosts before the test.
Best chem 1a and chem 1b professor ever!!! Come on you guys, be honest. He helped us so much
Abbas was nice and a great teacher who kept telling us: "The chance of this kind of problem being on the test is 100%" and he was true to his word. The class is moderate and if you are a hard worker, getting an A or a B is easy. I had 19 units and was working 25 hours per week and still managed to finish with a B. Sam Abbas is the Man in chem 1B!
You really don't learn much during the lecture. While he very much rushes through everything--and to the point where I had to start bringing my laptop to school to actually read what his slideshows say--there's no point in his slideshow lectures since those don't have any material that would help in solving his test problems.
Best Chemistry 1A and 1B at Saddleback. Abbas cares about all students and worked with all of us to make sure that we understood and excelled. Very helpful and inspiring.
My favorite teacher in most of the science courses at Saddleback. I am finding much of what he taught me very useful at UCSD.
Great Teacher!
Dr. Abbas was my favorite professor at Saddleback because he taught very well, he was compassionate, and he cared.
Abbas is fair, caring, and a great teacher. That being said, his exams are doable but challenge you in some of the problems. If you work hard, you can easily make an A or a B.
Dr. Abbas is friendly and really cares. Exams a a bit hard but if you study, you will do fine. Best advice: sign up for his 106 because he goes over problems that help a lot in the 1A quizzes and exams.
This professor wants nothing more than for his students to do well, and unlike most professors he actually means it. He will within his ability, while maintaining integrity of the course, do what he can to make things as student friendly as possible, and essentially sides with students in all possible ways.
By no means is this class easy, but Professor Abbas will do everything in his power to help you. Lots of extra credit opportunity, and you can tell he really cares about his student's success. The tests are difficult but he gives lots of partial credit, so as long as you study and know the concepts you will be just fine!!
One of the best college professors I ever had. This includes my UCLA professors. Dr. Abbas is great because he knows how to connect with his students. I found him very inspiring.
Prof. Abbas makes your life a living nightmare. He assigns homework that takes over 8+ hours of homework. His exams are extremely hard and will make you cry. HIs labs are graded hard as well. If you can, take a prof at IVC
Dr. Sam Abbas was very caring and while he has high standards, he loves all his students and goes the whole nine yards to help them out. I learned a lot and felt that I got a strong foundation that allowed me to do well in Bear's organic class afterwards.
Definately a class you need to put all your time and effort into, but such is the nature of chemistry. Professor Abbas is extremely empowering and caring of his students. He also gives ample extra credit opportunities and is compassionate with grading. If you put in the work, you'll succeed.
Dr.Abbas is THE BEST PROF EVER!He's extremely inspiring and caring and his chem courses build a STRONG base if u'r going into ochem or taking MCAT.Don't even hesitate to take your chem classes with him. There's something about his course that motivates you to try your best.Legit best class ever!A is totally doable if ur a hardworker.
1 of the most remarkable teachers to work with. Extremely accommodating. Cares more for the students future then then themselves. Work hard study make time to talk with him and you will pass. I would100 percent take this teacher again . Gl on the waiting list!
Nothing much to say. Dr.Abbas is the best! take him and enjoy Chem.
Dr. Sam Abbas is a great teacher, mentor and friend to his students. You have to work hard and keep a positive attitude. At times, it seemed that my A was lost but I always found opportunities to bring it up again.
Great Teacher who cares about all students
Wish we could substitute the time consuming, overly simple owl homework for the extremely empowering back of the book questions. Make sure you do them, actually prioritize them, seriously.. His exams are hard, but not everything good in life comes easy. Critical thinking will be measured here. Come with integrity and work ethic.
My favorite professor at Saddleback. Very caring and knowledgeable
Spring semester. I would take Dr. Abbas for any class. Just such a genuinely nice guy who REALLY wants everyone to succeed. Tests are TOUGH, so go to workshops, do practice problems, everything you can. He is generous when grading tests, if you don't know an answer, jot down anything and he will usually give some partial credit. BEST PROF EVER
Dr. Abbas's teachings and words of advice will stay with me for many years. He cares about us and actually teaches. His classes are not the easiest but you actually learn.
One of my favorite professors at Saddleback. Teaches very well and cares about all students.
I loved Dr. Abbas's teaching style and genuine caring for all his students equally and without conditions. Taught me well and his humanity made me reflect on life differently.
Professor Abbas genuinely wants students to succeed. While the exams are challenging, he provides ample opportunities for extra credit and partial credit. Utilizing study tools like Unstuck AI alongside the textbook can be very helpful.
Great Teacher and mentor who puts students first before all.
honestly trust me just don't put yourself through this horrific class. too hard and he doesnt even know how to actually teach. His student teacher is why everyone who passed his class passed. If it wasn't for her everyone would be failing. If you want a hard professor take him. He is very nice, and cares about his students but not good teacher.
Greatest teacher ever!
I took Abbas for Chem1A, It was one of the best experiences I've ever had in Chem classes. It's not easy A classes but he will help you a lot to get an A. If you want to learn the chem material and prepare for Ochem, Take his class. Highly recommended!!!
I followed Dr. Abbas from MiraCosta to Saddleback as I needed to continue to chem 1B after taking the equivalent of 1A and then took him for organic One and transferred to UCSD. Words cannot say enough about how inspiring and an outstanding teacher he was.
Quizzes are rly helpful, if you're taking the MCAT very helpful class, builds a great fundamental knowledge and understanding of general chemistry 1b! Definitely recommend him. Put in the time and consideration and you will absolutely get a good grade.
He is the best professor in gen chem that I have had, he is really compassionate about teaching and understands the student situation, the exams are hard but there r plenty of extra credit opportunities. You will learn a lot in this class. I would definitely take him again.
Abbas covers material in depth and cares about his students. I enjoyed having him for 1B.
I am finishing Medical School and if it weren't for Dr. Abbas's great and inspirational teaching in chemistry 1A, 1B, 12A, and 12B, I wouldn't be here. He is a true gem at Saddleback and the college is lucky to have someone of his caliber among its faculty ranks.
A hilarious, kind, and compassionate professor that will go the extra mile for you. His class may be a little difficult, but its bc he wants you to understand the material and think critically rather than memorizing everything. His students excel in upcoming chemistry classes and advance so much farther due to his teaching methods.
You will work hard but realize afterwards that you made a great decision by taking Dr. Abbas!
Sam Abbas was not just a great teacher, but a mentor and a parent in the way he treated us during 1B and 12A a couple of years ago!
Dr. Abbas will go out of his way to help you exceed if you show him that you care enough about your grade. He is a little tougher, but if you are going to take ochem HE WILL PREPARE YOU. he is an amazing professor and he cares about all his students. he is kind, compassionate, and loving.
Dr. Abbas is extremely knowledgable beyond Chem1b. He inspired & empowered me & has prepared me for ochem through rigorous yet engaging course work. This professor truly goes the extramile when it comes to his students. He is very accessible outside of class and will adjust office hours for you. He cares deeply & wants you to succeed in all you do.
Very difficult content, very empowering professor. Abbas makes it more difficult out of all the chem profs but it's in the name of preparing you more. Abbas is a very personable guy, he will know your name quick, and remember it forever. He has my respect.
Best Professor ever!
I haven't even finished this course, but MY GOD do I love this man. Not only does he care tremendously about his students, but he gives his all everyday. To me personally, Abbas serves not only as a tremendous professor who prepares his students well, but also a mentor and father figure that I strive to make proud lol! I am DEF taking him for 1B!
I love Dr. Abbas's passion towards chemistry and teaching from his heart to all his students. He has a way of empowering all and making us bring our best.
Do the work and show that you understand and Abbas will help you out. Must work hard and study in all his classes but it is worth it.
Abbas is extremely wise, motivational, a great chemist, and cares for each student like they're his own kids. VERY generous with extra and partial credit. Accommodates to his students needs by extending deadlines, changing office hours, etc. Only complaint is he doesn't let you keep tests. Overall extraordinary human.
An incredible and very kind professor. He is tough and believes in hard work. But he is very approachable and will go the extra mile for you. He deeply cares for his students. Would highly recommend!!
Dr. Abbas was the best! He inspires all students and teaches from his heart.
Chemistry 1A is a lot of work and my best move was to take chem 106 along with it. The problems we did in the 106 worksheets were very helpful in 1A. I really like this guy as he was very caring and supportive of his students but he will say it to you as it is: Abbas does not cut corners.
Hes very sweet and approachable. He really cares about his students and is a compassionate grader. He is extremely knowledgable and an incredible professor. I personally really like his teaching style. Just put in the effort and you will see results!! :)
Dr. Abbas was amazing.
I would not recommend taking him. He is not kind, and does not care about his students. I did not learn anything from him. He writes his own 5 star reviews on here as well!!!
I owe my success in STEM to the work ethic I developed after taking Dr. Abbas's chem 1A and 1B. I cannot say enough about how inspiring this professor was. Ask honest students and they will tell you how caring Abbas is.
An outstanding professor. He explains concepts clearly, and genuinely cares about his students' success. His passion for teaching is obvious in every lecture. If you want to actually understand chemistry (because I know it's hard sometimes) I highly recommend to take his class. One of the best professors I've ever had.
exams are just absolutely ridiculous. the average for each test is in the 60s-low 70s. you can study for as much as you can and still end up with a subpar grade. such a great guy, but he overcomplicates concepts, grades labs harshly, and exams include an insane amount of material. hardest gen chem professor, i recommend taking someone else.
Sam Abbas is a great professor because he knows the material and knows how to effectively communicate it to his students. He goes in depth but is more than fair and treated us like his friends or his own kids. 1A and 1B are heavy duty courses and he does not cut corners. I wish I was able to take him for Organic but I missed that opportunity.
He is one of the only professors I've had who genuinely cares about his students. I learned so much in his class that I wouldn't have learned anywhere else. His class isn't easy, but he grades very generously and truly wants you to succeed. I went to all of his office hours and he helps me a lot. I can't wait to take him again for organic chem!
