Clear expectations, easy to understand what you need to do for an A. Interesting lectures and easy to pass quizzes.
My favorite teacher at miracosta. His lectures are so applicable to life. He is very experienced and great at teaching the content. AMAZING EVERYONE TAKE!!!!
There are 5 units, each 4 weeks long. 3 Lessons per unit. 2 quizes per unit, not timed, easy! Take notes on podcast/readings. Slower paced class. Easy A as long as you do your work!!And a final too.
Great Professor. My only advise is READ THE SYLLABUS! He will not baby you about assignments. If there is a discussion post or paper due he will not remind you. Be responsible and read the syllabus! Otherwise great class, great professor.
Took his class online and thought he was a great professor. I ask a lot of questions and he was always quick to get back to me via email. The course has weekly tests and discussion boards so you have to participate. Read his instructions carefully and you'll be fine.
Great Professor! Expectations on all assignments are clear from the beginning. Lectures are informative and interesting.
You're graded more on his personal expectations on formatting and direct quotes from the book/podcast/reading than your understanding of what was taught. Overall it's a pretty slow paced easy going class on its own, but if you're busy w/ other classes at all the literally 30 10 point assignments will become very annoying and easy to forget.
Arenivar is possibly one of the best professors I have ever had, if I could take him for every communications class out there I would. He really engages with people in the class and his stories are so interesting. Do yourself a favor and take his classes you will feel like you're actually learning without all the stress other classes cause.
Great and memorable class!! It's extremely straightforward, Arenivar leaves nothing to question and lays it all out for you and is always accessible. As long as you do the reading and listen carefully to his podcasts the weekly quizzes and papers are a breeze! I was scared of how many essays there were but they are super easy to write.
Overly strict professor, will not work with students unless their work is "perfect". At times when I needed more clarification and I would email him, I was always directed to the Q/A Forum, which at times I do understand can make it easier but Professors should be willing to guide their students without being inconvenienced. Not enrolling again.
Incredibly easy class. all the quiz answers are online. Rather boring and I hate to say it but listening to his podcasts are torture. His voice is monotonous and his speeches are very circular and his anecdote seem to never end. I had trouble not zoning out every single podcast. Stock yourself up on coffee before pulling up his assignments!
Seems to drop grades or give out very low scores for sort of petty things, made it clear that format would be important but I got two terrible grades for petty things outside of format idk Ive had more impactful and helpful teachers
Sam is awesome. Best teacher you will ever have. Gives you exactly what you need to pass. Show up, do what is expected, and rehearse your speeches.
He is one of the best comm teachers at Mira Costa! Has such great stories and loves to share them! The concepts he teaches can be hard to understand but he makes them so interesting and fun! You have to do 5 RCAp in his class but by my fifth one I loved doing them! The quizzes and final are super easy!! Go to class and you will earn an A
This is my second time taking one of Professor Arenivar's courses and I love this one even more than the previous! He's incredibly caring and attentive. Even though it's an online class, I really feel like he does a great job in making sure that we are understanding the material. I wish I could take him for all of my other classes!
Great Communications teacher. If you put in the effort, it will be reflected in your grade. He is clear with what he expects out of his students. If you follow the guidelines he offers, you will do well on the speeches. It is important to take notes while in class and while watching is online tutorial videos. This information will be on the final.
I took his online Multicultural Communications class and it has been one of the most stressful classes I have taken. The topics for the papers you will write in this class will often take days to understand and write about. Boring lectures. Though, you can definitely get an A in this class if you do all of the assignments.
Online course and I enjoyed it. I must say there's a bit of homework. There are DBs (mini essays), Caps (essay) and Rcaps (essay). All assignments are basically essays but the concepts/topics aren't confusing and the word counts aren't overbearing. Mostly get to reflect on things that we've experienced in our life. Mult choi final and no project
Public speaking, we all hate it and its terrifying. However, Sam makes it so much more approachable and doable than I EVER expected. I left feeling a lot more confident in my public speaking and not as scared of the podium. The class conversation was really enriching and spite him appearing stern he is not in the slightest. Great class!
The class seems overwhelming, but honestly its two small quizzes a week and a writing assignment, using personal experience to exemplify the theory being learned for the week. The word count is high, and details are your saving grace, but this class is a breeze. as long as you don't keep your writing assignment for the end. Not bad at all.
Work is explained well and in an organized way each week. You get the hang of it fast, its the same work every week for the most part (2 quizzes and a writing assignment) overall, if you do the work you will pass the class easily.
Ok choice for a professor, many boring lectures and tons of writing assignments. A lot of work but I came to enjoy assignments as they allowed for personal narratives and opinions. He is a nice teacher and works with you. A lot of weekly homework but still would take again if needed.
Professor Sam Arenivar showed me that I could speak to a large group of people. He also taught me that its normal to be nervous.
Quality lectures, Amazing class discussions. I look forward to his class every week. One of my favorite professors, Ive ever had. Lots of stories, discussions that relate to communication theory. Old school styling teaching, but Sam is a hidden gem. Take his class!
Strict. Fast paced online class is fine, reading amount is fine. Don't like bouncing between chapters/concepts. Quizzes only one question at a time, can't see what you got wrong until week later. Forces you to listen to slow monotonous podcasts that are not clearly related to concepts. Felt like it was assumed this is the only class I was taking.
ruined my gpa. absolutely worst class i've ever taken. his tests don't allow any ability to go back or forward, you are only allowed to answer one qyestion at a time. questions are worded very strangely, takes me twice as long to understand what he means. petty grading is the worst. never had a teacher set me up for less success than this guy!
Professor Arenivar is one of my favorite teachers I've had. I would definitely take more of his classes! I took this class online and I felt everything was well explained and organized. If you read the materials and do what is asked of you it will be a very rewarding class. I highly recommend his class, very inspirational and rewarding!
Professor Arenivar is truly an amazing professor. Ive never been a fan of school or the school system but this class was so engaging. We connected communication theories to stories in our real lives. He is absolutely captivating and Although he seems tough at first, he really opens up and gives an amazing experience for students.
Professor makes you listen to a boring lecture about the reading and is overly detailed about what he expects in his papers. It really isn't too difficult, I just wasn't into this professor's teaching style. I think he just missed the opportunity to turn this class into something really interesting.
I can see how some people would like this class but it was just so boring to me. He had us listening to podcasts of him talking every week which was not fun. The work is fairly easy if you understand the context of it all but just a boring class overall.
Professor Arenivar is the best! I learned so many things that are applicable to life outside the classroom. This class is easy in the sense that he makes it clear what he expects, and if you do it, you'll be successful!
This professor puts zero effort into teaching. Instead, he makes you listen to these awful podcasts with a monotone voice. Professors like this are why MiraCosta has such a low graduation rate. I have straight As, so it's not like I don't put in the effort. The high ratings are very questionable. Do yourself a favor and find another professor.
He just doesn't care if you pass or not, he prefers you to fail tbh. I took this class with 2 course with 4 units and this class is just harder compare to the two which says a lot
Podcast are clear and I learn by listening rather than reading so this was good. Like how he gives feedback that explains why I did not get full points which helped me to get extra points on the second paper.
Professor Arenivar clearly states that his "compassion lies with those who followed the deadline" on his syllabus and he mean it. He does not care for students' growth and actual understanding of the video podcasts he requires students to listen to which are monotone and dry. The rubric is generic and lacks what HE expects of students
I was nervous based on other reviews but pleasantly surprised. I took an 8-week course with him and it was fairly simple. He gives you all the information you need to succeed. It may not be in the most enthralling at times, but it is an easy A if you just follow his guidelines and stay on track with due dates. Engaging in person, online less so.
Professor Arenivar was great, the material was well taught and engaging. There are two papers, both of which are simple if you pay attention to his rubrics and understand the material. Other than the papers, there is one final exam which was very easy and some extra credit as well. Participation matters so if you go to class you'll do just fine.
He was very knit picky about how he graded stuff and did not have a lot of feed back with assignments. The way he would try and explain things was not very good he would explain everything in essay long paragraphs and expect you to make sure you had all the points he had on there it was just too much. would not recommend
Terrible professor, AVOID AT ALL COST! You better follow his instructions thoroughly or he will drop your grade down to an F. No room to grow, if you miss something in your essay you cannot redo it or improve on it, it's an automatic failure, same with the quizzes. You get one chance and one chance only. Don't listen to these 5.0 ratings...
Organized class. Clear instructions. I liked the online lectures because they were easy to understand. He is direct in with explaining material. The papers are easy if you follow the instructions.
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND- plain and simple I really dislike his LONG list of "requirements"- and he never gives feedback.
I enjoyed taking his class. His lectures are very easy to follow and he explains the material very well. He is not an easy grader due to the fact he outlines what he wants specifically before submission so if you do miss a few things, expect them to be counted towards the grade. I would take him for a communications class again!
BEWARE! The physical content of this class is simple, but this professor makes things harder than they need to be. Trick questions, tough grading, intense rules, minimal feedback. He's extremely particular. I don't think he is fit to teach an online course. There were many flaws. He makes his multiple choice quizzes very tricky and easy to miss.
Has clear rules & expectations about work. Lectures are short videos & we have 1 week to complete the quizzes (no short answers for quizzes). Open note & there's no time limit. No excuse for a failing grade. Only 2 writing assignments w/ clear instructions. Final is a short quiz. Easy 8-week course! Just make time for the course and you'll pass!
Professor Arenivar's COMM215 class is a mixed bag. While some found the podcast lectures engaging, others felt they were dry and monotonous. However, the assignments are manageable if you follow the rubrics. unstuck AI was a helpful study tool alongside the class materials.
Very few options for increasing your grade. You do weekly quizzes that are filled with trick questions and are not clear and you only have one chance. Other than quizzes you only have one writing assignment. He is not understanding at all. If you plan on missing even one class, do not choose him as your professor.
Took him twice. Although the work load seems daunting at the beginning, Professor Arenivar's teaching and grading were consistent. As long as you make time for this class and develop a routine, you should do fine. I completed this 8-week class while also working full time, so it is doable. Quizzes and final are also open note and multiple choice.
Has very stupid questions on the podcast quizzes that were not mentioned at all in the podcasts. Has 1PM due dates, which makes no sense at all, and is very stingy about turning in late assignments. Marks down points on discussion posts for no reason. Pretty terrible professor in my opinion, try to find someone else if you can.
Super seamless class experience, professional teacher with a clear syllabus and student expectations, quick turnover, and an effective curriculum that familiarizes pupils with the core concepts through a test-heavy approach combined with multiple application-based writing assignments. Simple, effective, and burden-free.
This class was not good and the professor is not fit to each an online class. Lectures were designed as podcasts and the tests are literally impossible to pass unless you listen to the “podcasts” simultaneously. Save yourself the stress and anxiety and take a different class.
