Sam gets a mean A+ for Wickedness 101-
No Comments
he has a cool accent. hot. ummm... tests are hard. read the textbook and go to class, even then still some questions on the test that are confusing.
The lecture is really fun and intresting. You must read the textbook to do well on the test...if you don't know the chapter info. well the test are very hard. The test do not come just from lecture at least half of the questions come from the book. I spent many many hours reading the textbook...the entire thing.
It's a very captivating course, and easy to follow, while the book is a bit disorganized. I couldn't make over a C on the test despite how much I study. Go to all the classes, since material not in the book is presented. Make sure you do the writing assignments, as all of them together gives you a letter grade boost. Fun course.
Teaches 301 with Pennebaker now, and it's the best class I've ever taken by far. He's funny and makes things interesting. Make sure to go to lecture AND read the book closely, and it's a piece of cake. He's an awesome professor, take his class!
Great professor! I always enjoyed going and it was very informative, the tests were somewhat difficult, but it was worth it to take the class. i recommend this class to everyone!
Fantastic professor who really knows his stuff. It's necessary to read the textbook and pay careful attention in class to make A's on the tests.
this guy is hilarious and fun and kind! he is british, and his accent makes his class with Pennebaker even more entertaining. you do need to study but the class is worth it in my opinion.
The class is interesting but hard.
tests every class (8 questions), do readings and listen in interesting lectures and you will do fine
No tests or final in this class; 8-question benchmark at the beginning of each day. Its nice, but if you don't pay attention in lecture or do your readings you won't do well on them. Gosling is funny and interesting to listen to, and he and James Pennebaker do a great job in keeping this class upbeat. Would recommend it!
He is a great professor; very funny and always makes class interesting. He teaches the class with James Pennebaker and they make a great team. I would definitely recommend this class; just don't skip class.
This isn't a blow off class but it's pretty easy to get an A with not much effort. I just dedicated about an hour before each class to taking notes over the online readings. Make sure you take really good notes in class though. Gosling's a pretty good lecturer. However, he does the classic British talk-really-fast but stutter-a-lot.
Gosling is an OK professor. He is very funny, but the class is difficult. Readings every class and benchmarks. no grade curves no extra credit. this class is not an easy A.
I absolutely love psychology so this class was definitely interesting. BUT it wasn't easy. You do have to read and go to class to pass your daily quizzes. No tests and no extra credit (sadly). NO curves too. Though i didn't do as well as i would have liked i did learn and enjoy the class. If you can,go to the live viewing of the online class too
I really enjoyed the class and I didn't think it was too hard. It's more of understanding concepts and ideas than definitions. There's a benchmark everyday and no finals. He and Pennebaker are very funny together and I would definitely take this class if you get the chance.
Gosling and Pennebaker are a fantastic team. There is no way you can't get an A or B in his classes if you pay attention to lectures, do all the online readings, and do the benchmarks. Very interesting. Talented lecturer.
I loved this class and Professors Gosling and Pennebaker! Probably my favorite class I've ever taken so far. You actually had to understand the material and take notes to do well on the benchmarks...but I'm glad this was a class that helped me learn something new about psychology rather than memorizing things! Sad that this class is over :(
Gosling and Pennebaker's online psychology 301 class was fantastic! It takes some people a little bit of time to get used to the daily benchmarks, but as long as you pay attention the class is not hard to get an A in. Furthermore they use various "segments" like a news show, instead of constant lecturing, to help keep the class interesting .
You have a quiz every day during class. 8 questions, if you miss just one, it's already a B. I do NOT recommend taking this class online. NO CURVES, NO EXTRA CREDIT. Overall difficult class
I took PSY301 online with Gosling and Pennebaker and absolutely loved it! No midterms or final. Eight question benchmarks at the beginning of each class with random mid-class quizzes that are either one or two questions. The benchmarks can be a little tough at times, but rewatch the lectures before class and skim the readings and you'll do fine!
Gosling and Pennebaker are awesome! The psychology dream team. I love them. Learned so much in this class and had a great time as well. Would definitely take this class again. I actually kind of did since I went back and took PSY357 as a mentor for the online class. Just as awesome the second time around.
Gosling and Pennebaker are the perfect duo. Their class is an easy A and very entertaining. They try to make the lessons as understandable as possible. No final. Grade is based on 8 question benchmarks given at the beginning of each class. No textbook. Low time commitment. 4 writing assignments and 5 credits of research participation. Fav class.
This has been by far my favorite class at UT. I wish I could take it again! Gosling and Pennebaker are the best professors pretty much ever and the material they teach is always interesting and presented in a fun way. This class made me want to change my major. I would DEFINITELY recommend. Some people dislike the Benchmark system but I liked it.
Loved this class. Overall an easy A, no midterms, just benchmarks at the start of class. The benchmarks are relatively easy as long as you pay attention during class and do the readings. I took a lot of notes so i never had to watch the lectures more than once. Don't skip the pre class pod chats they are REALLY helpful for benchmarks. Great duo.
Funny and super respected! I wanted to listen to him and Jamie talk for hours. The class was great.
(I'm a 4.0 student) - DONT take Psy301. It is a HORRIBLE intro class and they dont care about you at all. You take benchmarks each class and they are very hard and shifts grades from an A to B super easily(A,B,C grading system, no +or -). I rewatched the whole lecture and read before each class and still didn't do well. All my friends in psy agree
He teaches the class with James Pennebaker and they make the class really fun and interesting. Theres a decent amount of reading but its not overwhelming and it really helps on the quizzes. If you do the reading, pay attention to the lectures, and take notes you can get an A easily.
no tests or final but the benchmarks can be tough. by the time you get the hang of it it may be too late. benchmarks are before every class and basically make up your grade so even missing one question can make a huge difference. Not worth it, didn't learn much although the class was slightly interesting because I love psychology.
I did not like this class. Why? Grading. While it seems attractive that there are no hws, tests, etc, the daily quizzes are much, much trickier than they should be. When I studied everything, I still never got more than 7 out of 8. I haven't studied like crazy, but I did put a bunch of effort in it, and still got a C. Lectures were amazing though tbh
Try not to have a class directly beforehand. It's hard to pay attention and you have to sign on at the right time because there are quizzes at the beginning of every class(no tests). Paying attention to lectures doesn't guarantee good quiz scores. The TA's write the quizzes and a lot of them were confusing and office hours never helped. Stressful.
Psychology was my favorite class at UT by far! Jamie & Sam are amazing professors and made me love studying for this class. It is definitely an underestimated class, so be sure to study for the benchmarks!
The online class has been my worst experience thus far at UT. There are no exams or large paper grades, instead your entire grade is based off stressful timed benchmarks that only ask conceptual questions. There are no factual questions at all. If psychology doesn't come to you naturally, good luck. Also there's no plus/minus grading (so a B+ B)
The benchmarks are tricky and the questions you miss pop back up but the professors are literally world experts and if you learn to use the facts to form your own conceptual understanding of the topics then you will do well. If you can't adapt to the class then you will make a B if you're looking for an A. The 8 questions are application questions.
Sam and Paige's introductory class was absolutely amazing! I changed my major to psychology because of this class. There are daily benchmarks that ask conceptual questions that are easy if you pay attention to lecture and do your readings. You learn much more than you would in a traditional classroom setting. WOULD RECOMMEND 5/5
I loved this class and was genuinely sad when it ended. The online version of this class is super interesting and fun! You are only graded on quizzes that happen during every class and writing assignments, I didn't study at all. The quizzes are super easy if you do the reading, which I did an hour before every class.
Once you figure out HOW to study for the Benchmarks its an easy A! The lectures are amazing, words can not describe how much fun I had in this class. BY FAR my favorite class of the semester, if not at UT. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Same goes for Paige Harden who teaches the class with Sam, they make a great team. If you can, seriously take this class.
Be very wary of the reviews saying the quizzes are easy. They are tricky and have some abstraction between what is learned in class and what is quizzed on. An "A" is not easy, although a "B" requires little effort. As a 4.0 Business student (Junior), I struggled the most in this class. Ended up P/F-ing, the only time I have P/F-ed a class.
Extremely interesting class, I look forward to it twice a week. Pay attention in lecture and you wont have to take notes, read the articles before every quiz (about an hours worth) and you will easily make an A. He drops your lowest 4 so although some are a little difficult, they wont affect you. Overall, 11/10 would retake/recommend this class
DO not recommend. Class is interesting and topics are easy, but the grading is a SCAM. I am an A student and I am currently failing this course. I get good grades on the daily quizzes, but I am failing?? There are no extra credit options. Do NOT recommend.
I'm a pretty good student and am currently 4 pts away from failing the course. It's not super difficult but the Benchmarks which are a good portion of your grade are so tricky which results in failing. Lectures are interesting some of the time but honestly I would just recommend you take a different course or at least the on-campus one.
I struggled on the benchmarks in the beginning but eventually did much better on them over time. The readings are very intriguing and enlightening. The lectures are cheesy and fun but pretty insightful; they were pre-recorded from last semester. No +/- system so if you have a B+ in the class, you get a B, which sucks. Overall, great class!
This class has heavily influenced my decision to change my major to Psychology. I greatly enjoyed the online course this semester with Dr. Harden and Dr. Gosling. I found the class and material engaging. As long as you pay attention during lecture, do the readings, and the few writing assignments (which are simple), you should do just fine.
The course has no exams, no midterm, and no final! Just read the assigned readings for each class, and pay attention during the lectures and it's guaranteed A. The class readings did take up A LOT of time though, so be prepared. You get used to the benchmarks eventually. Make sure to find a quiet place to do the online class & NEVER try to cheat.
This class is interesting and fun however, I think the grading is unfair. I tried so hard and take notes for the readings(long) and always missed. This course allows little to no error if you want an A. No exams/midterms/finals, just quizzes and after lecture question. I guess it wasn't too bad, I just wish the grading was done a little better.
I took a live stream class with Gosling and Harden and it was a solid choice. Everything is based off of quizzes you take at the beginning of each class-so no tests, and the 3 lowest quizzes are dropped. As long as you take good notes each class the quizzes are easy. I didn't have to spend much outside time on this class, which was great.
The live-stream class is very easy class if you keep up with the workload. It doesn't matter whether you register with Gosling or Harden, the class is still exactly the same. The writing assignments are completion and the benchmarks are easy if you take good notes during the lecture (which can be rewatched) and the reading.
Gosling and Harden present their students with a sense of relief given that their grading criteria is clear and lectures have a relative entertainment factor. If you read what is required before lecture time, you'll be fine. There are only quizzes in this class (benchmarks at beginning of each class), but they are open note. An easy A with effort.
Gosling and Harden deserve more credit. Aside from being overwhelmingly interesting, the course material is easy. Do your assigned readings, take minimal notes (which you can use for the quizzes at the beginning of class), and pay attention to their special segments on the video stream. Beware of a lot of surveys, but I liked them, personally.
In the online class, him and Paige Harden try their best to make the lectures fun and interesting and usually succeed. They are both very funny. No Midterm or Final, grade is based on daily, eight question quizzes. Every lecture is followed by access to 2-3 articles that are mandatory to read because questions appear on the quizzes
This course is taught by Gosling and Hardin. The lectures are interesting and very interactive but the class has a lot of reading. There are "benchmarks" (tests) before every lecture but not a lot of leeway for missing questions. It isn't impossible to get an A but you have to pay attention to the lectures, read and take detailed notes.
The class was so great! Even though it was online, it felt like you were right there with them! They always found a way to make class interesting and easy to follow. I recommend taking notes during the lecture over psychology in the news and who's in the expert's chair because they often reference that in the benchmark. Keep up with the reading too
Easy A. The quizzes are made up from questions you've missed previously, and new material for each week. If you look over the feedback from each quiz, you should be fine. Also, everything is open note. There's a lot of reading, but you can do fine just by using CTRL+F during the quiz (which is allowed btw).
Was very frustrated with this online class because it is on the point system with the only grades being quizzes at the beginning of classes. You needed 210 points for an A, and I had 209. No extra credit opportunities. However, Sam and Paige were amazing professors. Loved the class a lot, I just wish the grading was handled differently.
I have very mixed feelings about Sam. While the material he presented was very intriguing, his way of doing so was sometimes unclear and not captivating. The grading for this class is mostly composed of reading quizzes, which sometimes contain unfair questions that can be interpreted in many ways. There is absolutely no leniency with grading.
This class is seriously amazing! The way it's presented is unlike any other class you'll take. The material is so interesting and the lectures keep you engaged. While the readings can sometimes be long, the work load is not much at all. The benchmarks taken every class can by very tricky but you eventually get used to them. Take this class!
Sam and Paige are amazing professors. Always made the lectures interesting and captivating. Make sure to pay attention to the beginning of every lecture as that information will show up on your online quizzes. There is a lot of reading but if you just skim over the info and read the definitions it is not that bad.
Dr. Gosling is very goofy and charming, not to mention great at engaging psychology with a unique perspective. He made class somewhat entertaining and loves making dad jokes. His teaching method was very relaxed and memorable, overall an excellent professor.
Lots of reading, but great and funny guy.
I took the online course. Be sure to keep up with lectures, take notes, and read the weekly readings. It is easy to get behind. The class is semi-forgiving with how many benchmarks and RAS's can be dropped, but if you are even one point away from the higher grade on the scale, mercy will not be shown. Easy A if you keep up.
As long as you keep up with lectures you'll be fine. There's no final or exams, just quizzes every day and writing assignments graded for completion. You do get to drop several of the quizzes.
very funny professor. this class is easy just dont be on your phone the whole time. benchmark questions come from mainly the lecture and usually one or two from the readings. so take notes during the livestream!!
Benchmarks are open note, which is great. In the access course materials page there's transcripts of every previous lecture so just Ctrl+F what you need to find (along w/readings). Though quizzes are concept-based so you'll need to somewhat understand what you're learning. Class was fascinating and you can tell they put in work to make it engaging.
Online psych is an easy A. Your grade is almost entirely based on quizzes at the beginning of every class which are open note, so just pay attention to lectures and jot down a few notes and you'll be fine. He's also decently funny, so its not too hard to pay attention.
I hate online classes, but PSY301 w/ Sam and Paige was ok. The lectures can be dry and cringe-y sometimes, but fine at other times. While they are experts in their field, they teach in a way that seems like they view their students as young children instead of adults. The benchmarks range from very easy to confusing and irritating. Not awful though
Very funny and an amazing professor. Go to office hours for help on how to take notes for the class because it is hard to keep up with so many quizzes. Overall a great class, you will learn a lot. Not an easy A.
This class is absolutely amazing. Lectures are really informative and they explore a vast array of topics. Write down extensive notes of the readings they assign. Take notes during class and re-watch lecture. Not a difficult class at all concept wise but if you dont read then it can be way more challenging than it needs to be.
Taught with Harden. Class was easy A. Just listen to the lectures and for each quiz have the readings open ready to Ctrl F and find key words, have the past lecture open (it has a transcript you can also search), and have the past quiz questions you've missed (or jot them down on a paper). You'll get 8/8 every time and that's all you need to get A
I took Intro to Psychology with Professor Harden and Gosling online and I loved it! The lectures are varied, interactive, interesting, and fun. There is an 8 question multiple choice benchmark every class and no final. As long as you read and pay attention you should be okay! Dr. Gosling was very knowledgeable and funny!
Online Psy301 is NOT an easy A course. I spent almost 20 hours a week for this course. Two quizzes each week, not easy ones. Need to re-watch video, read materials few times. You have to be thorough in your understanding to answer quizzes. Out of 22 quizzes (22*8 176 points), you could max lose 14 points and still make an A.
This is not an easy course! There are quizzes for every class so you need to take good notes of the lectures and readings assigned. It is important that you rewatch the previous lectures in order to get a good grade on the quiz. Notes and readings are important in this class!! Overall I guess it was a fun class since it was online.
Two quizzes every week, indirect questions, mostly ambiguous answer choices. Class material is taught without much link to quiz answers. You need to think fast and hard during 10min quiz. Hard to keep good grade.
Outstanding professor. This course made me decide to pursue psychology.
Online psych 301 is so cheesy and boring. Readings are quite long but not necessary to get a good grade. Quizzes every class but they are open note and based on readings so ctrl f is your friend. If you only care about grades you can definitely do well with minimal effort.
this class sucks if you start missing even 2-3 questions consecutively on the quizzes. there are two a week and only 8 questions in 10 min. the questions are so tricky it's like they want you to fail. i like the class itself because its interactive enough to be interesting and psychology is interesting. BUT the way this class is graded sucks ******
I took the online PSY301 and I only managed to bring my grade up from a C to a B since I didn't take it seriously at first. Course consists of quizzes every beginning of the class and to get an A, you have to get perfect scores (out of 8) for almost all of it. My tip: take notes in class, keep up with the readings, and rewatch the lectures.
Dr. Gosling and Dr. Harden are amazing professors!! Their lectures are very interesting and the class is interactive with opportunities to interact with the material during the lecture. This is not an easy A class. But it is not too challenging to get 8/8 on benchmarks if you do the assigned readings and rewatch the lecture before class.
PSY301 with Sam and Paige is an online, lecture-based class. Benchmarks are given at the beginning of each class, worth 8 points each (for a total of 276 points, or 76% of your overall course grade.) I recommend rewatching the lectures, taking notes, and reading the assigned articles. An A is definitely possible in this class, just stay prepared.
Dr. Gosling's class is one of the most interesting classes I have taken. He manages to keep lectures interesting and funny through his funny but useful demonstrations and the material itself is also very applicable and engaging. The quizzes are the majority of the grade and open note so type out lecture notes using their outlines and read articles.
NOT an Easy A. Had to rewatch lectures & fully understand the articles to remember the details needed for the benchmarks and even then, some benchmark ?s are so tricky and more subjective than objective. Good class and profs for learning but not if you are looking for an A that needs little to moderate effort. Imo it needs a lot of effort.
I think taking this psychology class is hard. I'm not going to lie to you. The questions for the quizzes suck, and that's your lifeline for this class. I suggest taking it in person with someone else or in the summer with Dr. Angulo when she does it. Don't get me wrong; the class is exciting but is not worth affecting your GPA for it.
I HATE THIS CLASS. DO NOT TAKE IT!!!!!! The quizzes dont make any sense and have more than one answer. It is impossible to get an A. I studied 2 hours for 1 benchmark and still received a 5/8.
Took PSY 301 my freshman year and Sam and Paige were amazing. The class is livestreamed online, and is split up into segments like a talk show. During class you will participate in surveys, class activities, and quizzes. Do the readings after every class and you will get an A. I highly recommend it if you need a social science credit.
Dr Sam Gosling, Paige Harden and Jamie Pennebaker all give lectures for this class and make it very entertaining but they talk fast so be sure to take a lot of notes. you have a short quiz at the beginning of every class so you have to get online at the right time. No tests, a few short writings. readings for every lecture that you get quizzed on
This class definitely requires a good amount of reading and you have a benchmark every class, which basically makes up your whole grade along with other assignments. Just re-watch the lectures, use the readings during the quiz, and don't slack off. Getting an A takes work/effort, but as long as you listen to lectures and read, you'll do great!
The professors for PSY301 are extremely knowledgeable and hilarious. This class is very interesting, but hard to get an A in. Dont recommend to help your GPA. Rewatch lecture and read the articles throughly and you should do well. Great online class though
I took the live stream class for PSY301 and I have to say that it was very fun and engaging. However, there was a benchmark at the beginning of every lecture and if I hadn't spent hours reading long articles and re-watching lectures videos, I would've done poorly in this class. If you want to take this class, prepare for lots of reading.
This class was extremely hard to take as a first semester freshman because of the workload and the dense reading. It took a while to get a hang of the benchmarks but if you're willing to put in. hours of work you can get there. The reading can be really difficult and the benchmarks are unforgiving. Get ready to do a lot of work if you take this.
not a lot of room to learn how things work in the class (online 301). Had to bust my butt for a B-
dr sam gosling is my favorite person ever!!! he's so funny and i genuinely get lost in his lectures. this was by far my favorite class i have taken so far. i studied minimally for the tests and still managed an A in the class. as long as you're attentive and do the readings you'll be fine. i will forever remember dr sam gosling as a brilliant guy
Currently taking PSY301 online and I floored at how the lectures are so poorly done. Lack of slides, mediocre and hard-to-follow speak. I recommend copying and pasting each lecture transcript from closed captions into a document so you can CTRL F for benchmarks. The las benchmark, there was a question about a term mentioned only ONCE in 75 minutes.
The way the class was organized was a joke. Only 2-3 days of memorization and then having to apply it on a quiz. Quizzes were daily and timed. If you don't take amazing notes, don't have a ton of time, then you will not do well. But if you have to take this class, use control F. overall, DON'T
Took it online with Gosling and Pennebaker last semester. Hilarious guys and great lectures, but the daily benchmarks are definitely tricky. You have to score almost perfectly to get an A, and I'm surprised I scraped by with an A-. Online readings were long but helped for benchmarks. I'm not a fan of online courses but this one wasn't that bad!
There aren't any tests but there are quizzes at the beginning of every class and they count for most of your grade. The quizzes were pretty difficult and if you do poorly on the first few of them, its hard to bring your grade back up. Lectures were interesting and engaging.
The lectures and the professor itself are pretty interesting. The problem is the benchmarks before each lecture. Even though you study, there's a lot of tricky questions that can make you lose points. I didn't put too much effort and I got an A-. I think you just have to do the readings and rewatch the lectures and you'll be fine.
This class is hard! There is a pop quiz before each class, no exams. The quiz questions are mostly ambiguous, not googleable and you only get 10 minutes. Your entire grade depends on these quizzes. They assign really long papers to read and you are required to participate in research as a test subject to pass. Just take this class in person
Lectures were incredibly engaging and funny! All readings are free and online. You get your grades mostly from quizzes that happen before class (benchmarks) and after (RAS). Ctrl + F is your friend for benchmarks- assignments are open-resource. Do read the readings, though! Pretty challenging but completely worth it- love this class!!!
This class is interesting but is very hard. It took a while to get used to the quizzes and even if you read it is difficult to do well. I dont think this class is worth the hassle that it is. Take another professor if you need psych!!
I took this class in the summer, so my experience is kinda different: we had 5 weekly benchmarks, 40 questions each. The content's dense, but if you keep up w/ the lectures and readings, I don't see a reason you can't make an A. The lectures are also rlly interesting, I never got bored! There was a 5 hr research req., but it was online bc covid :(
This is the worst class I have ever taken. You know how hard work pays off? In this class it doesn't and you're left with low self esteem and stress. There is a quiz every class which is difficult even with open notes that determines your entire grade. Super long readings, I take notes and reread and make flashcards for and still do poorly.
Dr. Gosling teaches this class with Dr. Hardin, and both are amazing professors! The lectures are engaging and fun, and they focus on very interesting topics. But, the only grades you receive in this class are from Benchmarks (one every class) and a post-lecture question. Can be hard, but do the readings and pay attention, and you'll be fine!
This class is fully online I didn't really interact with any of the professors. The class is graded based on daily quizzes for the most part which can make it difficult if you miss more than a couple of classes. Interesting lectures though!
This class is formatted with daily quizzes that make up most of the grade. There are readings after every lecture, so it can be a bit of work, but as long as you keep up with it you will be fine. The daily quizzes consist of practical application of concepts rather than direct recall, so if you fully understand the concepts, you will do well.
Surveys, chat rooms, videos, and demos make the lectures fun & engaging. There are two 8-question quizzes per week that cover a few readings and stuff from the previous lecture. Took me about 1 hour a week (30 minutes for each benchmark) to skim through the readings, which are usually interesting. Highly recommend!
I really enjoyed psych with Sam and Paige (although I may be biased). They were very engaging and made the class fun. There are no exams; your grade is mostly determined by the quizzes every class (8 questions, about 10 minutes). It's definitely manageable as long as you read the readings and pay attention during the lectures.
I had a love-hate relationship with this class. The lectures were funny and entertaining, but the benchmarks are TERRIBLE. I put more time/effort into this class than any of my others, and it's still my lowest grade. You truly have to read ALL the readings and rewatch every lecture to make a good grade in here. It's extremely time consuming.
Dr. Gosling and Dr. Harden were amazing lecturers and they are very passionate about psychology. If you want to do well in this class make sure to do the readings. The quizzes are open note but they are short on time so make sure you understand the material from readings and class. Use the outline to take notes in class. I would take him again!
The class is graded heavily on the benchmarks right before class which you have to get the hang of quick. My grade wasn't the best due to me taking forever to understand the benchmarks so if you can do that the class should be fine for you. There are readings after every class for the benchmarks. Everything is open note.
Lectures are very interesting and professors are hilarious. But the benchmarks are flat-out awful. You can access the readings during the benchmarks, but they're still very difficult. There's way too much weight on the benchmarks. If you want an A, you'll have to be really attentive and actually spend time doing the readings thoroughly.
Loved the format of this class. Sam is very enthusiastic about psychology and is a joy to learn from!
I took this class online, and most of it was asynchronous, but if you didn't watch the lectures in real time when scheduled, then you missed quizzes. It was definitely important to be there on time and take the benchmarks at the beginning of every class. Despite that, Prof Gosling is energetic, and it's fun to watch him lecture.
I loved the lecture and the professor! but DIFFICULT grading criteria. Quiz every lecture & heavily affect your grade. slack the first few, screwed. No extra cred. it's one of the classes that memorization did not pay off. But I learned bc you have to actually understand and apply the content. The quality is A+, they give u many awesome resources
I personally found the quizzes (every lecture) pretty easy if you took good notes in class and spent time reading every reading in-depth. The lectures were interesting and funny. The writing assignments were basically free 100s, but one felt very invasive and uncomfortable (took multiple surveys about your emotions every day for 2 weeks).
Dr. Sam Gosling is clearly passionate about his job. The lectures were lengthy, though. He did a good job being entertaining and threw in lots of quirky jokes. Content-wise, I am not the biggest fan of psych, but he made it pleasant. Would recommend this class, but be prepared for ridiculously long readings and 8 question quizzes each class.
Sam is a really cool and funny guy . All of your grade is calculated through 8 question quizzes at the start of class, and the questions are often incredibly specific and confusing. The grading scheme is confusing and everyone I've talked to that took this class thought they had A's all semester and were shocked to receive far lower grades.
This class is interesting because the lectures are not live but it is still synchronous. You have to show up on time to take the benchmark (quiz) and answer a question at the end over the lecture. Theres chats and surveys given during the lecture that you can participate in. The benchmarks and easy. Make sure to take good notes and read before.
These lectures were so fun and enjoyable. It's a truly interesting and worthwhile class to take. Sam and Paige make the subject matter funny at times with skits and pranks. The only reason people don't do well is because they only take it seriously when it's too late to get their grade up. Do the work from the beginning and you'll do just fine.
Dr. Gosling is a wonderful professor. Funny in class, chaotic, and a lovely accent. I would love to take more classes with him. The class itself is a lot of work and memorization, but provided a very comprehensive overview of the subject that I haven't found in any other introductory class.
The class is fun and interesting and Dr. Gosling makes the lectures really enjoyable. There is a lot of reading for the benchmarks and sometimes the quizzes can be a little misleading. To get an A, you can miss at most 14 points and that is pretty tight so stay on top of the readings and do not miss the writing assignments and surveys!
I loved professor Gosling but I disliked the class itself. Your grade is dependent on benchmarks at the beginning of every class and the most you can miss is 6/8 questions to pass each quiz. The readings are sometimes unhelpful for the quizzes. Also you have to do 5 research credit hours to complete the course.
The class and professor is really enjoyable, but almost the entirety of your grades are timed 8 question quizzes at the beginning of every class. Lots of questions are very specific and usually you're tested on an hour of lecture and 2-3 readings. If you miss even an average of 1 question per test you likely still wont even get a B in the class.
I loved PSY301; it made me very self aware and aware of others. BEWARE: do all the readings, take notes, rewatch lectures, and DO NOT SKIP lectures because every class there is an 8 question quiz that you cannot make up later. There is NO extra credit & the grading system is straightforward. TAKE THE CLASS SERIOUSLY! Sam Gosling was awesome!
Dr. Gosling was a great professor, but the class is difficult if you do not take the time to read, rewatch lectures, and concentrate 100% of the time in class. There are questions at the end of each class, asks about what you learned, get them right or, your grade will go down because your average is only depending on that and benchmarks
Overall the lectures were entertaining but benchmarks did not reflect readings. Every class starts with a benchmark and ends with a graded question about the lecture. I reviewed and took notes but still could not get good scores on the benchmarks. There is a research requirement for course credit. The one I signed up for gave me trauma, beware.
This class is definitely not an easy A! The class is very interesting, and the lectures were absolutely amazing! The grading system is what makes this class difficult. The grade that you get stays put; no extra credit and no grades will get bumped up. Dr. Gosling was very funny, knowledgeable, and had great insights into the field of Psychology!
Prof. Sam Gosling was pretty cool, funny, and entertaining. This class was pretty difficult and leaves little room for error. Lectures are interesting, but definitely make sure you pay attention and read the assignments if you want to make a good grade. Overall, good class but definitely makes you work for your grade. Taught with Dr. Paige Harden.
Teachers were very nice- only thing is the class is extremely time-consuming, and you have to pay close attention to succeed. it is definitely doable. I would rewatch the lectures and read the articles right before the quizzes so that they were fresh in my mind. quizzes make up most of your grade and occur every class day. material is interesting
Prof. Gosling's PSY301 class was an incredibly well produced web-based class. He and Prof. Harden really did an incredible job, teaching fundamental elements of psychology while also making the class interesting, fun, and interactive. Benchmarks were a bit stressful but an A is quite attainable. Highly recommended!
Sam's super fun and everything but here's the thing. That class is impossible. I'm an extremely hard working student and it was impossible for me to get an A. There's quizzes before every class and it was just a lot. I literally can't stress to you enough how frustrated and upset this class made me. Save yourself and don't take it.
If he's teaching the course, TAKE IT!! He is so entertaining and makes whatever he's teaching engaging and interesting no matter the concept. I took his online class "introduction to psychology" and it was one of my most favorite classes I've ever taken in my life.
This makes me so upset, The class itself is the most interesting & entertaining class i've ever taken in my life, but this class is nearly impossible to get an A in, even more so a B. The way they have the grading system set up does such an awful job at reflecting my work ethic and the knowledge I've gained. Ruined my placement on the Dean's list.
Sam made this class super fun and he's very knowledgeable. Easy A if you takes notes over lectures and do the readings. I have never taken a psychology class before and found this class extremely interesting and it was a breeze as long as you did your work. Sam's teaching style makes the class engaging but he is definitely in the backseat to Paige.
Sam is a great professor and I love his British accent in the lectures, but this class is VERY difficult. You're graded by quizzes that can be specific and barely interact with the professors as this is a web class. You'll have to do lots of readings and work, even then an A isn't guaranteed. Fascinating material is covered but it's very difficult.
Sam is hilarious and is an amazing lecturer. Lectures were very interesting and engaging despite being an online class. I did not find the quizzes hard at all. Take notes during the lectures or look at the transcript, skim the readings, then ctrl F during the open note quizzes and you'll be fine.
I was intimidated to take this class, but this was hands down one of the best courses I've taken at UT. Sure there's a lot of reading and the quizzes can be tricky, but an A is attainable despite this being a point-based class/daily quizzes. Those who did bad probably weren't reading the questions right. Command F helps but think deeper!
I personally did not think this class was very hard. I love psychology so I enjoyed the lectures and material. Your grade is basically only composed of 8 question quizzes every class, but there are drops built in. And sometimes the required articles are long, but the only homework is reading articles before every class.
I took this class over the summer. There were five 40-Q benchmarks total with one drop, and then really easy writing assignments and after lecture questions. I took very detailed notes and stayed on top of the readings. You needed 178/198 points to get an A. Using the method I only missed 2 q's. it's very doable to gen a just put the work in!
Gosling & Harden co-teach PSY 301 online & honestly one of the easiest classes I've taken. No final, no midterms. They do these benchmark quizzes (11 questions each) before every lecture. they drop the lowest 4 & those benchmarks make up your grade + some other participation stuff. Benchmarks were super easy tho so don't be intimidated by that
The class was fairly easy over the summer. I got by just taking notes over the lectures before the benchmarks and I did fine. Just make sure to watch all the lectures (pre-recorded) and take solid notes. I never really read any of the assigned readings.
The lectures were super entertaining. Took over the summer. you get 50 q benchmark every week for 5 weeks with one drop. super easy if you take detailed notes over lectures. benchmarks are open note. definitely do the assigned readings (better to take notes) and have them open during the benchmark. make sure to get you research req done early!!
The lectures were very engaging and explored a plethora of interesting topics. However, the majority of your grade depends on these 8-question benchmarks that consist of these questions where the answers can often be very ambiguous.
Honestly pretty good teacher, just be prepared to READ a lot. There are very lengthy readings given each class and not to mention an hour and a half long lecture. As the semester goes by the benchmarks become more lecture-dependent than readings-dependent, so make sure to take notes/look at the transcripts. USE CTRL F to save time!!
This course was pretty easy as long as you go to class and take notes. The readings are very long and sometimes boring but as long as you can make general connections within the material, the benchmarks become common sense. Overall, a fun class with clear grading requirements, just make sure you don't forget about the research requirement.
Participation matters in the sense that you need to attend class to be able to answer the benchmarks, it is time limited and only opened in the first 10min of class. I took notes using the outline they have. The readings to take notes I used the tittle of each section and wrote summaries of each and facts. DO THE OTHER THINGS BEFORE ITS TOO LATE.
Take this class at a community college. Don't waste your time with this. You will realize that this class is a lot harder than it seems and requires a lot more effort than you initially perceived. An A at a community college and here is the same. For the psych majors, ya'll played yourselves lmfaooooooo.
PSY301 w Dr. Gosling & Dr. Harden was def my fav class! Instead of midterms or finals, the majority of your grade is from 8-question benchmarks at the beginning of each lecture. There are also 4 writing assignments over the semester that aren't difficult. Getting an A is manageable if you pay attention in class and read all the required materials!
Your grade will mostly be determined by the benchmarks. You will take a benchmark at the start of every lecture, and your 4 lowest grades will be dropped. I will say it will be hard to get an A if a majority of the benchmarks are not 8/8. The benchmarks are not hard but you have to read a lot. The lectures are interesting and not mandatory.
I loved taking PSY301. It's the perfect intro course for psych and Sam and Kathryn kept the class informational yet entertaining. Attending online lectures is crucial, as this is when surveys and quizzes are distributed. The readings are pretty necessary for the quizzes.
I had the in-person version of PSY301 but I was always looking forward to attending lectures. They engage with their students and have a lot of class participation activities to help us learn the material. They've made me laugh plenty and I retained a majority of all we learned without stressing, and I highly encourage students to take the class.
PSY301 was probably my favorite class this semester. It involves a lot of reading, but as long as you pay attention to lectures and have a basic understanding, you will be fine on benchmarks (can be tricky). The classes are engaging, and Dr. Hardin and Dr. Gosling do a great job teaching. I've never taken psych before and this was a good intro.
Sam and Paige are amazing professors who are funny and helped me see the world in a new light. I highly recommend taking their class to new students. There were benchmarks at the start of every class, but they were very manageable if you put in the effort. Beware of the time constraint though and use control F.
barely taught us actual content, mostly taught us 'how to study' and then gave us readings to take home. felt like a lab rat in their online class, didn't feel like an actual student as much as i did a test they were trying out.
Lots of readings and dense lectures but if you pay attention they are pretty easy! Daily quizzes but they help your testing skills overall. Definitely recommend this course.
Coming into college I was excited to take Psychology but after taking this class it makes me not want to take this type of course again. Lectures are engaging the first few weeks but become repetitive and your grade is solely determined on 'quizzez' and 4 writing assignments (short). No extra credit and overall I did not learn much from this duo.
Cannot recommend this class enough. Sam and Paige are the two most interesting, hilarious and knowledgable professors I've had since coming to UT, something I did not expect in an online class. While I won't say it's an easy A as there are weekly readings that are pretty important, I skimmed through them and listened in the lectures and did fine.
I LOVED SAM! His course with Dr. Harden was my favorite class. They never failed to keep you interested and entertained. Your grade really just depends on how you do on the benchmarks. They drop the four lowest benchmark grades and the four lowest post-class questions. Don't let any reviews scare you, do the readings, and you're good.
Would NOT take this again. Grade based mainly on quizzes during each class. Lectures are pre-recorded. I might as well be watching a Youtube video. I did every reading and watched almost all lectures, and still didn't get an A. Was disappointed. Psych is so cool, this class is not. Class leaves me feeling almost no connection to peers or professors
I personally really enjoyed this class, the lectures were entertaining and you only had to take an 8 question open note quiz e/ class. I recommend rewatching the lectures & taking notes & skimming over the readings. I had chem 302, bio 311D, H S 301, all right before psych and I was fine.
I loved this class! I was wary of taking it cause everyone said it was somewhat difficult, but it was my easiest class of the semester. Just make sure to take good notes during lecture and understand the readings. The benchmarks are mostly easy application questions from the lecture and readings.
I loved the structure of this course, but I can see how some would not like it. There is an effort to make the lectures enjoyable to watch, but sometimes they can get a little boring.
Very entertaining and easy! There are quizzes at the beginning of every lecture, but they are super easy if you attended the lecture before and read the outside readings! I don't think taking notes is necessary for this class.
this class is not really actual psychology more random facts you get random quizzes on, they were nice but the class was annoying to keep up with, just make sure to do all the work in the beginning so you can check out of this class when your other exams are hard
The professor himself was fine the course structure was the issue. The only way to get an A in this class is to get a perfect score on almost every quiz that you have to take every class. Make sure to read the require readings and rewatch lectures. I did learn some pretty interesting facts though.
The professors (Sam and Paige) were good but the problem is in the course structure. The only way to get an A in this class is if u get a perfect score on practically every benchmark. All writing assignments are completion based. There's a experimental requirement (for 18 and up) in this class but you can complete a 10 page paper instead.
Dr Gosling's online psychology course is amazing and hilarious!! They try to keep lectures like a tv show style and the daily quizzes are simple recall from lecture and readings so not that bad, you technically only need seven 8/8s and fourteen 7/8s on the quizzes to get an A in class and they also drop four lowest quiz grades.
Loved Sam and Paige's class! Really interesting material covered and readings weren't too bad. The only thing that was annoying was benchmarks...I had a hard time getting a perfect score on any of them. But a great experience overall!
I was hesitant to take this class because it's online, but Dr. Harden & Dr. Gosling are super funny and interesting. It's really fun to watch the class in real life if you get the chance. As long as you watch the lectures and do the readings you will do great on the benchmarks. The writing assignments are also all completion grades which is nice.
This class was really interesting and fun! The only grades were a daily benchmark (8 questions, open-notes), an end-of-class quiz (1 question), and a few writing assignments throughout the semester (really easy, graded instantly after submission). The benchmarks were incredibly easy just read the articles, take notes, and rewatch lectures. Easy A
This class is amazing for people wanting to take a psych class. The online format is great and they do an amazing job at making the lectures interesting and easy to follow. Some of the readings are extremely dense and confusing but if you pay attention in class and do the readings right after that helps a lot. Great professors!
Engaging online format with fun, insightful lectures. The benchmarks are challenging, but manageable with consistent effort. Unstuck ai was a game-changer for my study prep. Overall, a great psych class experience.
These professors were very fun to watch. Lectures kept you entertained and interested in the material. I'm not a big fan psychology but I enjoyed this class. They really help you understand the material through lecture and the readings. Make sure to take notes because you can use them on quizzes (benchmarks). Super straightforward course!
This class was taught by Dr. Gosling and Harden. The lectures were very entertaining and fun to watch. The benchmarks were straightforward - take notes on the lectures and type as you go and skim the readings. The lectures sometimes weaned off of the topic for the day and the research requirement was a little annoying.
Gosling teaches this class with Paige Harden and together they kill it! I had so much fun and learned amazing stuff in this class. I was super swamped with other courses but this was such a nice break from my heavier classes. So worth taking this class! The benchmarks are straight forward and very fair, just pay attention and have fun!
Sam is so knowledgeable and super funny. The lectures are enjoyable, I found PSY301 to be the most invigorating and fun online course I've ever taken. Really easy as long as you watch the lectures.
Professor was good but the class was difficult. You are given at times 3 articles to read and at times are lengthy. Your grade is based on benchmarks given every class. To get an A you have to understand the concept of readings and at times re-watch lectures. Readings took me 3 hrs to complete since u don't know what they'll ask. Overall 6/10.
Professor Gosling co-teaches this course with Paige Harden. The lectures were so annoying because they put in way too much effort trying to make them funny instead of actually teaching the concepts (there are no slides). Sometimes the lectures weren't even about psych at all. 80% of your grade is based off of timed quizzes that are pretty hard.
I got a D- in a 301 class. I'm not dumb, I promise. No exams, a test at the beginning of each class with only 8 questions, so even getting one question wrong each time just about kills your grade, and other than 4 writing assignments are the only things graded. Questions are out to get you & extremely specific, long readings are assigned
easy A but all the negative reviews are right. I would skip class, only complete the benchmark, and set an alarm for the RAS. after class i'd watch the lecture at 2x and take notes on every word. many questions were contradicted in the reading, so i contested them (form in syllabus). profs are rude/unforgiving when their own questions are wrong.
Didn't start doing well on benchmarks until I read each article twice and rewatched the previous lecture before each class. Benchmarks are the hardest part of the course, but everything else is chill. I'd 100% do the psych research req. early in the semester (so you don't forget). Lectures were fun and engaging... I'll miss Sam and Paige! :)
negative reviews are being dramatic. if you pay attention during lectures (not even taking notes, just listening) and skim the readings, you will do fine in benchmarks. four of them are dropped, as well. the 5-hour research requirement is also very doable. if you put in the effort, an A is easily achievable. if not, then that's on you!
Ok course, just pay attention and take notes on the lecture and the reading.
Psychology was fun and interesting! Online course, good semester!
No exams, graded on benchmarks every class, a one question quiz at the end of each class and few short writing assignments. Benchmarks aren't entirely difficult but aren't easy either. I feel like I didn't learn much psychology in this class, maybe because they are too focused on the class structure than actual content.
The benchmarks are super excessive, to the point where you won't learn anything. I also forgot one assignment and they gave me an X on my transcript. Thank the Lord I had taken Psychology somewhere else or I would not have graduated. Don't take this class.
This is the greatest course I have ever taken fr. Lowk makes me want to major in Psych. Just pay attention in class, they are very engaging and informative in lectures and just having a good time in general. Exams are going to be lecture and readings heavy though, so take notes. Recommend the online version for sure.
i loved this class it was so fun and silly!! you never interact with the professors but they seemed great, the lectures were fun and engaging and covered a lot of genuinely interesting stuff. grading is SO EASY. Open note everything, 'essays' are graded based on submission only. There's a decent amount of readings but nothing crazy. I loved it
Extremely easy, one open-note benchmark quiz per class determines the majority of your grade. The course is interesting and engaging, but sleep is more interesting and engaging, so that's what I did during the lectures.
Honestly just pay attention and do the readings and you'll be fine, the professors for this course are funny and the lectures are super engaging
By far the most entertaining class I took all year, was always excited to go to lecture and see what show was going on today. My only complaint is that the grading was somewhat confusing to me and the daily quizzes were annoying despite how hard they try to convince you otherwise. Still, it's interesting and enjoyable without being super hard.
Its fine, the benchmarks ask the stupidest questions ever and they are bascially your entire grade. i took ap psyc and feel like i learned way more in highschool than i did with this course. take the bencharks seriously because theyll bit you in the butt, I mightve gotten a B+ in this class which is ridiculous. lectures are funnyish
A good professor, but the class structure can be difficult to manage. It's mostly graded on benchmarks quiz, so being there right on time matters a lot. As long as you do the work and listen you should be fine.
The lectures are cool and all and I even went to one in person, but the benchmarks are pretty harsh and ask very specific questions rather than helping you learn. I almost did not get an A because I had gotten more than one wrong on around ~10 out of the 20ish benchmarks so definitely be careful starting off just in case that happens to you.
If you can do psych at CC or with a better professor do it, grades are determined by benchmarks that happen the first 10 mins of class. pay attention to readings and lecture demos. However, lectures are funny and engaging. Recommend doing the research participation credit rather than doing research paper- super easy u just do surveys
The lectures are engaging. The class is so easy, you can just enjoy learning rather than stressing about your grade. As long as you attend lectures and pay attention you'll get an A. There are a few writing assignments but they are very easy and essentially graded on completion. I really enjoyed this class!
