Don't ask stupid questions. "It's trivial to do."
Cool teacher. He speaks clearly and teaches enough in a class. 'unique solution'
man.... wtf is a Taylor series?
never had any notes with him...knew the course like the back of his hand!
My favorite prof so far over 2 years of eng. This guy knows his stuff TOO well.
very nice prof, good notes, amazing how he writes notes without a book in hand!!
very good professor. good notes, good lectures.
I can see why he doesn't use a textbook; his notes are better than the book's
Too smart that if you ask any question, you will look like an idiot. He has the whole text book memorized. Tests arn't bad at all.
IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND A SINGLE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIS NOTES AND WAHT HE WRITES ON THE BOARD, PRETTY AMAZING HUH?!
Good prof. Extremely smart, knows his stuff. I'd recommend
He's one of the best math profs out there! Modest and smart man. One prof I definitely respect.
This man never makes mistakes. The only professor I've seen teach without ANY notes. He even memorizes examples!
Don't take this course with anyone else. Show up for every lecture. Frighteningly smart. No hidden agendas, no ego. Definately one of Carleton's best.
Excellent professor
the best prof at carleton
Had him 9 years ago and thought he was the best. I see things still haven't changed! Excellent explanations, always ready to help, and tests that are very fair.
i think sam and ata khan are the same person, but i can't prove it
Possibly the smartest man I've ever met, great prof
Really good professor. Very, very clear. He chugs along in his lectures though. Definitely not too fast, but if you get lost somewhere and stay lost for a few minutes, it's hard to get back on board the Melkonian train. But then you can just read the notes you took and it all makes sense.
Definitely the best prof I have this term.
TOO MANY NOTES!! Good Guy, but can't absorb any information in his classes due to the excessively large amount of notes. But good prof overall.
He needs to learn that, though it's impressive to spout notes from memory, the students are not learning, as the same can be done by reading the textook. He needs to teach math intuitively and allow the technical details to be understood through the textbook. Very straightforward tests and exams.
Math Genius. He has the ability to write his notes by memory at an incredible pace. However, he tends to drone on like a robot on crack. If you can't keep up, just read the textbook - nearly the exact same notes.
Smart guy, but he doesnt explain stuff and just writes the book on the board. Youre better off studying on your own and not going to class
This guy rules! His testing cannot be more fair, just do the problems in the book and you can easily get an A or A+. With this guy what you see is what you get, only thing is his lectures are very hard to follow. However since his testing is so fair, who cares? Dont get me wrong though, his tests arent easy.
I really liked him! No textbook, but that was great! He gave problem sets that really prepared you for tests! Tests were easy, but the course does require studying, as they all do, really. Genius, and really, really nice; don't be afraid if the material seems hard in class; he won't test on that stuff! Hope I have him again.
This guy is incredible at math. He really knows his stuff, and will try to help you understand it as well. He sometimes forgets that we don't have Ph.D.'s in Math, but he's still one of the nicest guys you could meet. Buying the text was a waste of money...DON'T BUY IT. Just study his notes and the examples he gives. Tests and exams are super-easy.
His teaching style is more suited for senior students rather than first year students. He can be really overwhelming with all the stuff he throws on the board in one lecture. He needs to ease up in the lectures, most students can't learn from an hour and a half of non stop note writing.
i studied 4 weeks before the final exam spent 400 dollars on tutors and ended up failing the class and then I find out that the dean is bell curving marks and for some reason the teacher can not show me the final exam avoid this teacher do not be fooled by what you have been told by other student i was fooled and here i am. he told me to change prg
His lectures are useless. The only thing he does is writing on the board. Never explains , just reads what he is writing. His notes are not clear as he goes from step one to step 5 without explainig how he got there. His tests are not that easy but if you do the suggested problems you will be fine.
The only good part was the adjustable weight of the final. He does not teach well. He blows through material like he only has 5 days to live. He does tons of examples in class but doesnt really cover how to do them. He runs this course like you already know the material. If you have him I hope you are really good at learning from only the textbook.
Best prof ever.
Awesome professor. Does plenty of examples to convey knowledge. Teaches entire class from memory perfectly. Easy to learn and understand unless you are inept in math.
Learned everything my previous prof failed to teach in the first 5 minutes of class #1. Incredibly easy to learn from!
Easy especially you read all and copy all of his notes and work on his suggested question you will get an A easily
You getting a good grade got nothing to do with the fact that he is smart as mentioned here. In fact, his class goes on without decent explanation,non-stop.He assumes that you just know everything if you copy down his notes as he writes, and reads what he is writing.
Very Knowledgeable and approachable. I must say that it is also very impressive how he is able to teach whole lectures by memory.
Sam is the man! He is a beast when it comes to math. His class seems very hard because he just powers through the material. However, as long as you study his notes very well, the tests and exam are all easy. He usually throws only one tricky question per test, but the tricky question is actually from the notes. So study the notes and you'll be fine
GREAT teacher. I actually WANTED to do good in this class because he was so great. Although I do recommend touching up on Calculus I before coming to this class (since I did poorly, and resulted in a low mark for both classes). Very enthusiastic teacher and grabs your attention.
awesome awesome awesome study the notes you will be very fine
THE one and only professor for any of your math needs. He knows it all, and he teaches with a fist of steel and the wisdom of the Budah. If you respect yourself as an engineer, mathematician, or a student, you will take his class. Plows through the material like its his breakfast, and while you might think you understand nothing, you'll know it all
He has nice eyes LOL. Anyways, he's a good professor. I had him for MATH 1005 as well. For this class, I barely went to lectures because the course textbook was written by him, and I'd find that the notes in the text vs. the notes in the lectures were the exact same. So I prefer leaving all that writing somewhere else and studying from the book.
I dont know why every one says he is good, but here is the real fact, from day one all he does is write on the board, and he is basically writing his own book again, he goes extremely fast, so you either write up to his speed or just pay attention of what he is writing, the course material is a bit tough but his tests and final are really easy
good teacher, articulate, and knowledgeable
This professor makes AMAZING notes. He never looks at his notes, just starts writing on the board. He is VERY knowledgeable in math. But, if you are attending class, a word of advice: don't stop copying. He writes very fast.
God of Differential Equations
You could not ask for a better math teacher. Regardless of whether he regurgitates his notes from a book he may or may not have written, its flawless - concise, organized and more than thorough. Consider yourself lucky if you have him for any class period.
I master of his trade.
Lectures could not be more dry. He was even less interesting than a textbook.
Very easy to pass his course~ he's always smiling~
While this professor's ability to reproduce the entire textbook on the board from memory and do it at an incredible speed is impressive, it makes taking notes in class completely pointless. Your notes will be nearly identical to the textbook, except that the textbook will be very slightly more thorough.
He basically notes down every single thing similar to the textbook on the board and he is not really good at teaching. He teaches fast without explaining thoroughly as if you already know the materials in advance. many others dislike his teaching method as well. honestly, I skipped the lectures and studied the book and could manage to get A-.
His lectures can be long and boring (his lectures are basically the same as the textbook) but if you read the book, do the problems then you will pass. The concepts from the book are not hard so I just studied from the book and didn't attend most of the classes and in the end got a good grade.
The course uses a book that he himself wrote. He ends up copying the book on the board. I stopped going to the lectures after the first 2 classes, and still did very well on the course. Tests and exams are pretty straightforward.
To be honest I would rather recommend reading the whole book and understand it by myself than to go to his classes. He literally just copies everything exactly from the book and puts it on the board. He writes so fast that u can't catch up with him. His handwriting and voice are not clear if u sit in the back
Excellent prof, know's the subject through and through
Amazing Teacher if you like learning from the book and also his test are exactly like the ones from previous years. If you have his past test you are go into the exam with at least an A.
He knows his material, and I did well in the class, so I guess I can't complain too much. Differential equations is easy and he does explain it well. Series was harder and he doesn't explain it well. I learnt series on my own, online. I had friends describe him as "the most uninteresting man in the world." He wasn't really interested in lecturing.
Great prof, if you do the textbook problems and whatever examples from tutorial, you should be fine.
Had the option to do this or 2007, long story short ended up taking both during my career here and I can say if you are given the option to do this with Melkonian or 2007, definitely take this class! I found it much easier than 2007 and Melkonian is a great prof. He pretty much sticks to the textbook and will provide old exams to study for final.
He's a living textbook. He wrote the textbook and the way it is written is the way he speaks and writes. He is extremely intelligent and concise; a great academic but a terrible (by it's most primitive definition) teacher. Not one of his lectures I came out with any understanding. (You think i'm kidding...) If you are a self teacher you will be OK
He writes everything "word by word" on the black board and briefly explains it. You have to come to class to take note because it will be everything and only thing you need for your tests and final exam. Don't skip class and expect to find the solution online. He will give you a prev final exam, be sure to learn from it before going to your exam
Basically writes the textbook (that he authored) on the board, from memory, at blistering speed. He seems very knowledgeable but if you are looking for the prof to teach the material, I would keep looking. If on the other hand you like learning from the textbook well you aren't missing anything in the lectures so he's your guy.
He wrote the textbook for this class and just writes it on the board, word for word. Honestly, I stopped going to class after 1 month and still got away with good marks on the tests. If you have someone who can teach you the concepts or are a self-taught learner, there's no point in showing up.
He recites his textbook in his lectures and it's difficult to understand the examples he writes on the board. It's easier to learn directly from the textbook.
I didn't attend a single lecture after the first week. He has written all the textbooks for this course and others and just rewrites the pages onto the board. Just read the textbook and take notes from that, much easier to understand. I made cheat sheets for each chapter and then took practice tests. Exam was super easy and comparable to old ones.
He seems like a nice guy but he's a boring prof that only does the minimum. In class he will literally just write out his textbook on the board with no extra details or examples. Do not bother going. It can be an easy A if you study and do the assigned problems from the textbook.
Gives you practice problem and solutions. Gives too many proof that you are not responsible for. It is nice, but it takes time away from important stuff that you will be tested on. Cancels last class to give you break which nice. Overall a good teacher and nice course.
You literally cant blink in the lecture as he writes super fast, also, he is rude sometimes. The material is heavy even though if you study hard you could get a good grade he just isnt an awesome teacher you would go to class write a huge amount of stuff then go home. he explains briefly and talks while writing so you have to focus on both.
Not a very difficult class but it seems difficult initially. The problem with this professor is that the lectures are theory heavy and it's incredibly hard to keep up with him in class and you leave the lecture confused. BUY THE BOOK and instead of going to class spend time learning from the book, go to the tutorials and you'll be fine.
He wrote the textbook and his lectures are word for word of what the textbook says. Attendance not mandatory. He is sometimes hard to understand because he has an accent and speaks very quietly and fast. Wastes lots of time showing proofs and stuff you don't need to know. Tests are fair and straightforward, no trick questions.
He reads off his lecture notes WORD FOR WORD. It makes going to his lectures a pain because you leave with little understanding. His tests have a lot of questions. He started throwing 1-2 gotcha questions that were worth THE MOST. On the exam, everyone failed his written portion, to which he completely discounted it. That's why he has a 3 rating.
Excellent prof, very concise and to the point, lectures were pre-recorded so you can pause if you didn't understand something, posts notes and leaves enough room on them so you have room to write. Best 4 out of 5 tests count , exams were fairly easy with no trick questions and all open book. If you do assigned problems, it's an easy A.
I am a big advocate for attending every single lecture no matter how useless they may seem. This course has made me reconsider that philosophy. 2 hours monthly with TA > 12 hours monthly with prof
Prof is ok, only downside is how he teaches, which he writes on board what he speaks word for word. It was ok for the first half of the course, the second half it was harder to understand. But at least the TA was awesome, the final exam was super easy still given a 3 hour block enough for me to achieve an A+ as someone very good at math.
Quite Rude
Easy test and easy Exam, if you put effort in it, you will do well in the course. Although the course can be challenging, also had a sample exam. Very helpful. the best advice for this course is that before the exam, study on everything on ALL the test.
MATH2008 W24. 45% Tests, 55% Final, Best 3/4 Tests. The lectures are okay, he just reads from the lecture notes he has which he also posted online. The tests and final exam are really easy, it's clear what comes and there's not much pressure. You need to have access to a textbook though and you might have to buy it. Content is not that hard.
MATH2007, Fall 2024. 45% Tests, 55% Final, Best 3/4 Tests. The final was all multiple-choice and was similar to the practice exam he posted. All of his tests were scaled-down questions from his lectures and were simpler than questions in the textbook. His lecture notes are clean and all you need for the class (lectures are not required to attend).
His tests are much easier than other calc 2 profs. Wasn't a big fan of his lectures and ended up learning most of the content from Prof Leanord's series.
literally no point in going to the lectures. he is literally a 1 for 1 copy of the textbook and just writes it on the board, study really hard for the tests and exam. exam was 20 multiple choice questions which sucks if you don't know how to do something cuz u don't get part marks. don't recommend this teacher find someone else. trust me...
Course was amazing despite people saying he's just a textbook reader (which he is but he more than makes up for it by explaining everything well). His tests are average difficulty and tutorials are very beneficial. The exam weight might look daunting at first but this professor is more than willing to help prepare you for it.
Writes on blackboard for the whole class and mumbles without explanation and his so called lecture notes are word for word out of the textbook
Prof. Melkonian's lectures consisted of reading notes directly from the textbook, then writing them on the chalkboard. This made lectures quite boring; if you cannot learn like this, choose another professor. Will happily take time to answer any questions you have. Exam/tests were easy, and the review before each one was exactly what was on them.
Notes are extremely wordy, information heavy, and almost directly copied from the textbook (reading the textbook was more helpful). During lectures he literally copies the notes (which are online) directly onto the chalk board with little commentary. Awful teacher, quite a waste of time to show up to class
Stopped going to his lectures after the first week. However, his lecture notes were completely fabulous. Self-study-able and elegant proofs / lecture material, really organized. He has basically rewritten the textbook in condensed, well-structured format.
All lecture notes are available, clear criteria, no surprises on exam
I personally enjoyed the teaching style. Professor Melkonian often built up understanding before presenting topics making concepts easier to grasp, and he emphasized understanding over memorization in his lectures. All the content on the brightspace was also well organized and made it easy to study for tests as the criteria were very clear.
The textbook lectures notes are good, but the prof just reads and says the exact same stuff from them every class while writing the exact same thing on the board, so its just better off to skip the lectures in my opinion. On the bright side though, the tests were fairly easy and final exam was very similar to the practice exam he posted.
He seems like a good prof, however, I only went to one lecture the entire semester. In that lecture, he literally just reads from the notes, therefore, I read all the lectures on my own and did all the practice questions, and ended up getting like 95% in the course. He seems nice though!
