He is 1 of the best history teachers ive had. funny, interesting. the class work is easy the only thing you have to do is write a 1 page response every week based on your analysis of the topic. exams are written and based on the terms that he gives every class. the books are needed to help write your response for the week.Really Simple. get an A
Really good history teacher!.made the class fun and interesting. you do have to read the books but its really not bad.
VERY GOOD!!
I was very impressed with this class. He really engaged us students and while I would say "easy A", I would say he makes it easy to get involved and interested which gets you a good grade.
you for sure have to read a lot for this class, but the midterm and final are both fairly easy. make sure to take notes and write down the vocab words EVERY DAY. if you miss some, get them from someone in class. mitrani was very interesting, he understands that we are not all history majors, but still makes class fun for everyone. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Great Teacher, he was very interesting, Learned alot and gives a different perspective of the world, was not to hard, just come to class listen and participate you'll have to read a bit and write a one page response every week, take notes and make sure to write down the terms, otherwise he's a great guy, nice and down to earth, take this class
Professor Mitrani is a genuinely excellent professor. It's rare to see a teacher that cares as much about his stuents as he does. He is very easy to talk to. He does not care if you stop by his office. I would reccomend his class to anyone that needs history credits because you will enjoy his class even if you hate history.
He is one of the best professors I've had at COD. he cares a lot about what he is teaching and makes lectures really enjoyable! He says things you wouldn't think a history professor would say, so lectures aren't stuffy and boring. Go to class though, all the terms from lecture are needed for the tests
Maybe the first legitimate genius I've ever met. When I'm in his class, I feel like I'm in the presence of a great mind. Lectures were fun, engaging, and made me think. I learned a lot about history, philosophy, politics, writing, and about life in general. This class was worth every bit of the time and money I spent on it. Thank you, Sam!
Wow what a great guy! very funny and friendly. great mind, very very smart. best proffesor i ever had. I was gona drop the class for health reasons and he told me not too and helped me to finish it. Too bad he dosent teaches other subjects. And he is very hot also.
I really, REALLY enjoyed this professor. He has a sense of humor, and the lectures are short & to the point. His tests were essay format, but extremely easy. You pretty much just have to throw up simple facts about a topic from class. I loved his class, and would sign up for him again in a heartbeat.
Awesome guy! Very nice and funny and always easy to ask him questions. Lectures are clear but he moves fast and be sure to take notes you will need them for the essay finals. Every friday is group/book work aka total BUSY WORK but he takes attendance so show up for it
I love this man already! At first I was afraid I wouldn't but after a few classes I realize how awesome he is! Very knowledgeable. Doesn't take anyone's BS. I love that in a professor. TAKE HIM! Also, if you try hard you will succeed.
Funny, funny, funny guy! Great teacher! Holds your interest. Very helpful and interesting to listen to! I wish he would teach all my classes! You will not regrade taking him!
Mitrani is one of the best professors I have had the privilege to learn from. He makes lectures 100% interesting and really has you thinking for yourself about world issues. Would highly recommend! He is the only History professor that actually got me interested in the content.
I really don't like history... I don't feel good at it and have never had that much interest in it, but I love this teacher and he makes it interesting. I would take him if I were you!! It's a lot of reading but it's worth it. [Side note: he's good looking ;) ]
The only Professor I ever had that truly made me want to fight for a better world. History comes alive with his lectures and explains it well. He helped me a lot with career advice and he the resident intellectual at COD. His knowledge extends to every period as well as literature and politics. You will be smarter after this class.
I wish I had an instructor like him for every course. He is one of the most knowledgable professors I have had. He makes lectures interesting by adding humor. You do have to work for your grade. If you pay attention to the lectures, which isn't a task to do, and participate in the discussions, you will do fine.
Down to earth genius that will make you interested in what might have otherwise been the most benign of topics.
Very funny and interesting teacher. Took his 16 week class and overall it was a good experience. No tests with the exception of the midterm and final. Important to pay attention during the lectures and write as much as you can. Important to read the book as well. Class consisted of notes, discussions, and weekly writings. Would recommend him.
Great Teacher I felt in love with him haha I learned SO much in this class
Wow, this guy is an amazing teacher! He's energetic, funny, and loves what he teaches, and does it in a way that makes you want to come to class at 9 in the morning. BE PREPARED for the discussion classes, he will call you out if you don't have your book and aren't ready to go!
My 2nd course with Mitrani. He's amazing. Class is half lecture, half discussion. Both are really engaging and thought-provoking. Learned so much. Your grade will be 20% participation (free points if you talk during discussion sessions), 20% weekly 1 page reading responses, 20% essay midterm, 20% essay final, and 20% 4-5 page term paper.
Mitrani is the best professor the college probably has. His class is very enjoyable to attended. I looked forward to this class everyday. There were a lot of discussions, but no pressure. He is very understanding if your shy. The reading was a lot of fun also. I recommend taking his class any day.
I'll echo everyone else's comments, he is one of the best at COD. Keep up with the reading, and the discussions will be more fun to engage in. Make sure to ask how he grades, he'll never say outright. I recommend visiting him at his office hours, he's really friendly and helpful!
Mitrani is wonderful. I took his class because it seemed interesting, and I was not disappointed. He clearly loves what he does, and is not afraid to say it. He assigns a lot of short papers for each of the chapters. He also requires you to lead a discussion for a chapter, which was very easy. He talks a lot but the class is very discussion based.
I took his class merely to satisfy a degree requirement. It ended up being the most interesting college course I've ever taken. He is very relatable and teaches with immense passion. You can take away a lot and get a good grade as long as you keep up with the readings and are actively engaged in his class.
Awesome teacher! I had no interest in history before but he made class so interesting. Its impossible for you to fall asleep in his class (had him at 9am). Just a great professor overall. I'm a shy person and he wouldnt force anyone to talk during discussion (just had to say some points here and there) . By far my favorite professor at COD.
Mr. Mitrani is a really cool guy. I took a seminar class focusing on Karl Marx and this class was just really informative, and I think Mitrani did an exceptional job teaching this class. To sum it up, he's a smart guy, great teacher, and fun to be around.
Mitrani is great. For WWII and the Holocaust class, he only gave papers, there are no tests. However, there is a LOT of reading. And you HAVE to read in order to do the papers and participate in class, there's truly no way around it. But he's hilarious and very chill. He's a bit overwhelming if your, er, conservative. But makes an interestung class
Mr. Mitrani is just really great. You do have to read a lot but it's usually really interesting stuff. There are no tests or quizzes but after each group of readings (and sometimes videos) you have to do a two page response, and they're really easy too. Be ready to participate. No textbook, but some novels. Highly Recommended.
This was a great class to take and Sam is extremely helpful. There is no tests only papers and there is a lot of readings. But, the readings are quite interesting and he goes over a lot in the class. I definitely recommend taking this class.
Sam is the best out there! You want to actually learn some great stuff? Take him. He's going to give you the "What really happened" perspective not the sugar coated perspective from your lousey Dupage county highschool. Really really cool guy who's down to earth. If you love Naperville for some crazy reason then maybe don't take the class LOL!!!
Very good professor. The class is based on discussion and readings. He's a funny teacher, so he makes the class very interesting. I would definitely recommend.
The most interesting teacher I've ever come across. I never cared for history classes before because of the way they were taught. He is able to make an 8 AM lecture super interesting and thought provoking. Funniest teacher I've had. There are no tests. LOTS of reading and there are page long reading responses due each week until you turn in 10.
Mitrani is hilarious and awesome! One page responses due each week, super easy as long as you have a thesis that makes sense. We wrote one longer paper about a novel we read which was 4 pages, and the midterm and final are explaining 5 vocab words and basically just saying what you learned in class. As long as you go to class you'll be fine!
He knows his stuff! He comes off and slightly intimidating but he's really nice and will help you out one-on-one. Partcipate and show up and you should be okay. But the midterm and final are definitely things you need study for and make sure you do the weekly papers!
Awesome teacher, Makes my day. He's funny as hell, but make sure you do the readings and watch the videos on BB. Other than that hes awesome!!
Second class I've taken with him and I would love to take every class he teaches. He makes history really interesting and gives you a no BS history class. He's not afraid to share his opinions and often proposes questions that really make you think. No tests/quizzes, only response papers and a final paper and you need to read to pass.
This teacher is the most educated and helpful instructor at COD. I have had him twice already and he forces you to think on your own and u can still get high before class.
Sam is a great teacher! I have taken him twice now and gotten an A in both classes. 2242 is all reading, but if you read and complete the responses your golden! Had him for 2260 as well and it was super easy online. being part of the 3+1 program be ready for a great class! Take him!!
With Sam, you get what you pay for. He looks boring, but dont let it fool you because he's actually hilarious. He keeps the class engaged with his lectures, and the class discussions are always interesting. He makes you think. There's 8 2-page papers to write based on documents & movies/videos but he'll only take your best 6 papers. No exams!
Had him for Western Civilization after 1600 and he was super chill. All he makes you do is 8 (2 page) papers of which he only grades 6. Your final is a 4-6 page paper. No exams ever in his class, however, it is heavily discussion based. Super easy just show up to class enough and do the papers and you'll pass with an A no problem.
At the start of the term, he came off as a little intimidating. With Sam, you get a learning environment that is like an open-forum. He isn't afraid to speak his mind, or debate controversial topics with students. No textbook, just some novels with several 2 page responses on each. You get used to his humor/structure. Solid dude, would recommend.
He is a fantastic professor. He managed to make a very dark topic almost funny. He would go into random tangents about his life which were hilarious. His grading was fair and his discussions were always engaging. However, he's extremely opinionated on a number of subjects, so unless you're on the far left, prepare to have your views challenged.
Absolutely great teacher, his lectures are funny if a little bit repetitive. He can make the darkest subjects a little lighter. There's a lot of reading involved and if you don't read you'll have a hard time writing the papers.
Keeps it real, made my least favorite subject into something more interesting. I had no trouble showing up, and he really managed to keep us interested.
There are 5 two pged papers, final and questions for one book. For the questions look up the books that have sparknotes summaries it makes it easier to do, there is 8 books to read. He is an amazing teacher, super funny and willing to help you on the essays but he doesn't allow phones, he covers the clock and never yawn in his class you'll see why
History 1120. There is a five page final and five 2-page papers you have to write based off historically acclaimed books. The readings are interesting and the class teaches you to think critically about what caused historical events and why they happened. Mitrani is incredibly insightful and leads class discussions on the books he assigns us.
Professor M is amazing! He is clear on what he expects of his students. He is approachable and very understanding. Do the readings, put an effort into your response papers, engage in class discussions and you'll do great. This is a NO BS history class. His lectures are powerful and he's hilarious. I wish he taught other classes. Scored all A's too.
Mitrani is a great, hilarious professor and he's very intelligent! The class comprised of eight readings and he only took five of our best responses. He actually makes history interesting during lectures. He can be opinionated and tends to swear a lot. But he's a great professor and I totally recommend!
He may come of as too strong but you can always have a debate with him. Class itself is very informal and HES HILARIOUS. I actually learnt soooo much in his class. TAKE HIM! best professor at COD. You read books and write papers and analyze mostly the deeper darker themes of history. Its not just memorizing. Trust me. Taking him again.
This guy is the craziest teacher i've ever had, but in a good way. If you want to laugh and learn, take this class. If you're looking for a class for your Gen Eds i recommend taking one of his history classes. There is no singular text book but you will have various readings to reflect. No final exam, just a final paper.
He is so funny, but still allows for a great learning environment. He is one of my favorite professors on campus. He does however expect you to read a lot, but he is considerate in the books he choose. If you try you will succeed in his class.
Really good teacher. Definitely passionate about what he teaches. Seems like he shifted a lot of perceptions of students in his class. There's an assortment of books he chooses for a class, and they are necessary to read for the papers he assigns. Talk in class, share your opinions, and get invested in the work, and you'll get a lot out of it.
Mitrani is super cool. I thought I was going to hate his class the very first week, but by the end of the semester it was almost sad to see the class end. He acts like a jackass sometimes, but underneath that he is a super nice guy that really cares about his students and their interests. It's a lot of reading, but you read a lot of good books.
He is one of the best teachers at COD. I took an 8 am class with him and not once did i fall asleep because his lectures are too FUNNY and engaging.
Sam was great. He really got me very interested in history, in fact, he's the reason why I'm considering a major in history. You have readings/videos due once or twice a week with discussions on the days they're due, but everything was really interesting. 8 papers due throughout the semester, but only 6 for a grade which was nice. Loved his class.
Sam's cool. Yes, his sense of humor may take some getting used to for some people, it can be a little on the jackassey side at times. But he really means no harm by it, he cares A LOT about his students. He's a really smart guy and he puts a lot of effort into his classes.
Top 5 @ COD. Talk to him candidly, tell him you don't know, challenge him. He is invested in your education, not your grades or your obedience, he cares about you as a person and about pushing you to do your best at all times. Take this professor and you will be happy with your experience at COD. Especially take his honors classes.
One of the best professors I've taken at COD. His method of teaching may take some time to get used to, but he'll make you want to pay attention in class. Take this guy - amazing teacher and person.
I also took western civ. with him. There are 6 two pg papers, 10 questions to write, and a 5-7 pg research paper final. There are 4 books, movies and lots of articles to read/watch. Sam is not afraid to speak his mind or get sarcastic with students. His lectures are amazing (you will hear bam a lot) and by the end you will want to take him again!
At first I did not like him, but like a tumor, Sam grows on you without you noticing. He is hardcore atheist/anti-Christianity, and he will challenge your religious beliefs, but he is a decent guy. His teaching style can sometimes seem like an educational stand up routine, which is what makes it so great and interesting. Will truly miss his class.
Professor Mitrani had a good sense of humor, he looked to push you to critically think about different aspects within the world, and he was also willing to help you if you were struggling in his class. Although his teaching style is a little bit different, I would definitely recommend taking him.
Dr. M is really funny. He tries to get the attention of students to his topic and is clearly passionate. He does this by using the f word, b word, and a few other "naughty" terms. Dude's a communist and makes no qualms about it, especially his desire to see a revolution in the USA, which most students don't care for. Nice guy, and makes you think.
Best professor I've ever had by far! I've taken all his history classes over the past 2 years. He's super knowledgeable and really makes you open your eyes to so many things. Be prepared to read! If you don't read the books, which are almost always interesting, you won't pass. Lots of group discussions!
No tests or worksheets- only short weekly papers regarding the topic of the week. You will definitely pass if you do the readings. Attendance isn't mandatory to pass, but its a good idea to show up because the lectures are great and helpful. He often shares controversial opinions, and encourages students to think for themselves. Enlightening class!
Mitrani is by far the best professor I've ever had. He's engaging, witty, and knowledgeable. He shares powerful and insightful perspectives that make you look much deeper into a topic. You'd be making a huge mistake if you're a student at COD and you don't take him. I guarantee that you will get so much out of his class.
You won't regret taking his class. He says that attendance is not mandatory but he does grade you at the end based on participation. His lectures are really inspiring and make you think. There is no homework except for 4 papers and 10 discussion questions. Most of the books required for the class, I found online for free. Really great teacher.
Mitrani's class was the only 1 Ive ever actually been excited to go to, bc the topics he discussed were rlly interesting and intriguing. Opened my eyes to a lot of things. He will put you on the spot if you don't make an effort, but I was so intrigued by what we were learning I wanted to participate. He's a funny guy and his ideas are v interesting
This is my 3rd class with Mitrani, he is one of the best professors i've ever had at COD and is very well liked among students. Mitrani is good at giving feed back, encouraging students to become friends and to participate in discussions (a good question is a must!). Don't be afraid to talk to him! His course is 'easy' as long as you focus in class
By far one of the best teachers at COD. I took African American History. He's honestly such a funny person & really cares about what he is teaching us. We had 6 books to read (all short) throughout the semester, and 3 movies; each having to submit a discussion question and a one page response. Definitely recommend him a thousand times!!!!!!
TAKE HIM TAKE HIM TAKE HIM! I took his African American history class and LOVED it. Learned so much that I never knew before. We read a lot of books that were amazing and based on a historic timeline. He really makes you think about what we are learning about. He is effortlessly funny and makes the class so worth it! Gonna try and take him again!
Took his American history class and I got so much out of it. Material should've been taught in high school. We read a lot of books that were amazing and based on a historical events. He encourages lots of discussion about various topics. Very funny and makes the class fun. Highly recommended.
Currently taking him but he's great. Very understanding; I emailed him about mental health issues I was experiencing as a reason why I was not going to be as active in class the next day and he was very kind about it. Funny and willing to work with you. I would advise you to take him. There is a lot of reading though so be prepared for that.
Amazing professor, as long as you're willing to tolerate the often dark sense of humor. Reading comes from novels instead of textbooks. Discussions and lectures were always engaging and enjoyable, and made me actually care about the material. It's pretty difficult to NOT get engaged with the material in this class. HIGHLY recommend.
Real funny and enthusiastic guy. He's knowledgeable but also opinionated. Gets a little side tracked at times. He also assigns a decent amount of reading as to be expected.
Ive taken two of his classes over the last year and loved each one. Its very evident that he is extremely passionate about history and his lectures. Assignments are definitely doable. I will say he has an funny and dark sense of humor so if youre a bit sensitive just beware. Hes one of my favorite professors Ive had!
Incredible Instructor
Professor Mitrani is just a really good conversationalist. He always tries to include everyone in the conversation and he drives interesting ideas. A really knowledgable professor. But you have to great ready to read. In this past class, he assigned six books and a graphic novel. In this upcoming class, he assigned eight. It is absolutely worth it!
People who take this class end up being well-versed in African-American history along with develop skills on how to make sound objective arguments that appeal to everyone's different political beliefs. The class was never boring and his arguments in his lectures were easily applicable to every college student.
This is my second class with Mitrani and I have signed up for a third next semester. He really is knowledgable in what he does. He tackles the material with truth and grit. He doesn't hide his real opinions but allows the class to think for themselves. Real fun and kind professor. Lots of reading!!!
Sam is a wonderful teacher, mentor and historian. I've found him extremely accessible outside of class, and have spent hours having conversations on a variety of topics during his office hours. He tends to talk a lot, but everything he says is interesting and builds upon what is taught in class. He is a must if you are even vaguely into history.
I have a lot of respect for this guy. He is very funny and super nice! He makes his class very easy to understand and he knows just how to explain everything to help you strive! If you want to take a history class, take him! He's am amazing teacher!
I really enjoyed taking this honors history course with Professor Mitrani. He assigned us 6 books to read along with 4 short papers (drops lowest score) and a final paper. It's a lot of reading, and for our class it was a lot of discussion. He's a funny guy and if you have the chance at taking him I would give it a go!
Genuinely the best professor I have ever had. I'm not huge into history but take the classes just to learn more from him even though I don't need the credits. He's energetic, honest, and yes will make fun of you a bit. He really makes it his goal for you to takeaway something from the class each day and process history more than just good and bad.
I really enjoyed his class. He doesn't require a book for class, he provides all the material. there are reading responses to that material worth 5pts each. which makes up 80% of your grade. he takes your best 16 out of 21. there are discussions after the readings. 1 final paper which you do NOT need to do outside research, 10% of grade. no exams.
Absolutely LOVE his class. Sam is hilarious and values student input while lecturing. There is a lot of reading but the books are all fairly cheap and extremely interesting and there are some movies as well. I took this class for one of my gen eds and it was the best decision I've ever made. If you want a class to look forward to, take one of his!
Sam's cool. Interesting points covered in class. Great views
He is quite literally one of the greatest professors I've ever had the opportunity to take a class with. Usually lectures are insufferable to listen to, but he finds a way to make every. single. one interesting. He's a kind man and makes you feel comfortable in his presence almost instantaneously. I'd recommend him over and over and over again.
I struggle with depression and he knew that and he made everything worse. He was not accommodating at all. He was also very passive aggressive in every word he said.
The professor is engaging and makes the course material fascinating. Lots of reading but the books are interesting. unstuck AI was super helpful for staying on top of the material. Definitely recommend this class!
At first I think he was a weird dude with white hair but going into spring break he's the best teacher I've ever had. No matter what the time or scdule is you must take him MUST it will change your whole outlook on life. I don't talk a lot in his class but there's great discussions with other peers. He prbly thinks I think his class is boring.
There's a good chance he might become the BEST professor you'll ever have. He's hilarious/super chill. You gotta try hard if you wanna fail his class. Class is discussion-based and with homework, you can be creative with your answers. Unlike most classes at COD, in this class you can actually MAKE FRIENDS because Mitrani encourages you to do so!
I'm in one of professor Mitrani's class and I'm signed up for another one in this upcoming fall semester. He is funny and makes the lectures not so boring and he is very caring too. There is response questions due every week and you have to read the book and if you don't then you'll fail, so do them. If you have a chance take him and talk in class
Sam is an amazing teacher and an amazing person. Will challenge your ideas and beliefs in a good way. Teaches history from the side of the people living in it, not in a bland factual way. Great assigned readings that encourage you to read and learn more. Sam doesn't just have an alt view of history, but an alt view of life and relationships.
He is a really cool and funny guy. You honestly can look up summaries for the books and movies and still get an A, but I wouldn't recommend it. Pretty easy grader and very interesting class. Would for sure recommend taking him.
Mitrani is hands down my favorite professor at COD. He is hilarious and covers all the material perfectly and gives good feedback to your discussion questions and papers.
He's definitely one of my favorite professors ever. He respects the students who turn in their work. I would totally retake his class if I could for a credit.
It is my second time taking Sam and he is a very wonderful professor and he is very caring. His lectures are never boring and he is funny and swears a lot. He gives good feedback on our papers and our easy homework assignments. There is no tests or quizzes. He wants people to talk in class. Also his office hours are fun. Taking him a 3rd time.
