he's pretty cool but has high expectations but he'll help you out if you need it.

Passionate. Dedicated. Caring. Highly Motivational. What else could you ask for in a professor?

this isnt english class this is some half-assed pseudo-philosophical podium for a teacher to bark about The Stranger. The Stranger!! Just like 11th grade!
i thought his class was fun and he was pretty cool. in fact im kinda bummed i can't take him this fall.
hot, young, fresh with many opinions. will fight for student rights. will listen to you. very helpful. even if he doesn't know you he will try to help. he may grade hard on essays but he just expects more out of you than maybe you even do for youself.
this teacher is total junk. his short-man-complex comes shining through every lecture. if u want an A sit in the front row and kiss his ass.
I took Mr. Pierstorff's engl 50 class in summer school. He helped me out so much. I now know how to write a fantastic essay because of him. Very good teacher and would do anythng to help out his students.
His clarity is great, if you do not understand, ask him after class and he will fix any misunderstanding.
Sam is the best! He is open-minded, fun, carring about his students teacher. He is not easy, but he explains the material and what he expects from students very clearly. If you want to learn how to write essays, you have to take this techer. He is always ready to help.
This guy is tough in English 101 but not so tough in 49 and 50. Watch out if you got a C in 50. You won't pass 101 if you're at C level.
Made class interesting
Lots of fun but very hard teacher. He's hella cool but he'll give you a D if your paper sucks. Don't flake on the readings either. I gotta C. I wish i could take him again, i know I could get a B of even an A if I tried harder or went to his office hours.
He is so cool. He makes class interesting and it's worth attending his lectures.
He's a little tough, but it's for your own good. It's really easy to talk to him because he isn't old like most of the professors at MJC. If you do the readings and make sure you proof read your essay(s) you'll do fine.
Super nice guy!
I can't believe how HARD this ENGLISH 50 class was! Sam made it literally harder than any other english class (even 103!) 90% of the people in the class FAILED it, the other 10% got low C's. DEFINATELY don't take this guy!
Yes by far one of the hardest english teachers at MJC!!!!! His small man complex overshadowed the class! Yes in fact if you do want a good grade a lot of ass kissing is involved
Made class very intesting and gave good feedback on your work, although he was anti classic forms and pro contemporary. I enjoyed the class overall. And he's one good looking man!!!!!
Oh My God!!.....He is SUPER HOTT!!.......me and my cousin would go 2 class just so we could stare at him......oh and the class wasnt bad either....itwas very fun and interesting. I HIGHLY reccomend him!....Hes GOOD!!
Oh My God!!.....He is SUPER HOTT!!.......me and my cousin would go 2 class just so we could stare at him......oh and the class wasnt bad either....it was very fun and interesting. I HIGHLY reccomend him!....Hes GOOD!!
OMG, HE IS A TOTAL FOX!!! I got an B in the class because I think his hotness distracted me. Anyway, his class is definitely worth attending and doing good in because well he's HOT! Anyway, yeah, too bad he's not gay, all the good one's are breeders dam
Basically, he does have a HUGE small man complex. Get around this and you will be fine, always let him know that "he's right"
If you do the work the class is very rewarding. I suck at this subject I hated the material but Sam made it worth learning. Now I can brag that I understand Existentialism in depth.
He is awesome...and has this appeal about him that is awesome and sexy in a way. HE is a great teacher and will share with you his knowledge willingly if you simply ask. Highly reccommend...

smarttttt
I highly recommend him to every student. Helpful and very nice. You don't felt regrets if you take him.
He needs to grow up and stop watching so much MTV. People also have other views on topics which he only likes to hear them when they agree with his views. I would not recomend him at all.
He taught very well; I learned a lot. A hard "A" but i got it!
He is a good teacher, it eng 101 is college level so its not a breeze. There is a lot of reading and essays everyweek they aren't difficult. He was helpful and class was fun, he did seem to favor the girls alittle and he gets off topic sometimes, but i learned a lot from and he is kind of strict on grading things but i got a B. Good teacher overall
great
this guy is awesome. he made english hella fun and i learned alot about men and women and how to write papers. i also wen to a poetry slam and its was so amazing i wanted to write poetry. i think i will take his poetry class next year. he's inspiring. i recommed him highly
I learned a lot on his class. Engish is really not my subject, but I seemed to enjoy his class a lot. He makes the class intresting. The class is not a walk in the park, you do have to apply your self. What makes it easy is how helpful and clear he is. I would recommend him to others, and would even take another class from him.
I loved this guy!!
Best professor you can take for poetry, period. He's got a nice blend of humor, sarcasm, sensitivity and most of all respect. Down to earth and hilarious. Still young enough to relate to the students. Take English 105!
Pierstroff is a great teacher but this is definitely a class where it requires a lot of time and dedication to really succeed. I took this for a summer session and I worked my a*% off and only got a C. But the subjects he speaks about are relevant to today's world and really interesting.
Mr. P is kind of hard even though he's funny and makes the class laugh he grades tough and has really high standards. He hates cell phones and will embarrass you if he catches you texting, but i learned alot about gender and womens issues and my writing really improved even though i got a C in his class I'd take him again in a heartbeat.
I dreaded going to English class my first day, but after I had a blast. I started finding an interest in English. He is funny, smart, sweet, nice, cute, adorable, helpful, and just awesome. He doesn't waste your time. Everything you do helps you towards your writing. Although if you're grammar is not too great, you might find his grading harsh.
way cool prof. a lot of writing and reading and research, but the topics are relevant and intersting and he brings a lit of energy. i went to one of his poetry slams and it was off the hook. i got a c on my first paper but a b on my 2nd. he's a hard grader and marks you down for lots of comma errors. but class is great and i am learning a ton
He is an interesting teacher. If you aren't good at English I wouldn't recommend taking him. But if you want a good grade, you will have to seriously kiss his butt!! He definately favors some students (hot girl students)so if you don't mind that, then take him... You won't be bored in his class, but you probably won't get a good grade either....
Pierstorff is really energetic and really knows what he's talking about. If you know how to write detailed, thoughtful papers then you will do fine in his class. He really doesn't ask a lot from you, just 4-5 papers and a journal log of a few homework reading assignments. You learn a lot about women's issues too. I would definitely take him again!
Greatest English teacher on the planet.
Good professor and class is interesting but he is a hard grader. If you are not a good writer dont take him
awesome class even though i might not pass. it's my fault for being a flake and not doing my papers better. mr. p is cool but hard.
I was scared at first becaause I was only going to be there for 5 weeks, but after the first day, I knew it was going be hard, but he was going to make it fun. You have to be prepared to know grammar, but you will learn a lot. He walks you through the first essay, and tells you exactly how he wants things. Very awesome teacher!
An excellent professor who is very clear about his expectations regarding essays. He is very helpful to those who seek his advice about their papers. This is a college class and he expects a college paper. His essays require a lot of thought and planning. I would recommend him if you REALLY want to improve your writing skills.
Pierstorff is an awesome teacher. He is very clear as to what he wants you to do in his class. Very passionate about his craft. He can teach a monkey how to write properly. Its a hard class. However, you will leave very well trained. plus he is super entertaining, which makes you not want to miss class.
The class was interesting...however, he focuses the class on a topic he has a fairly shallow understanding of, causing him to abuse stereotypes. At the very least, he needs to become less clueless about the LGBT community. That said, disagreeing with him isn't going to harm your grade if you write well; I argued with him a lot and still got a B.
Very interesting class, great engaging teacher but be prepared to feel like a huge loser if you are a returning student or actually work alot through college, Pierstorff will constantly remind you how awesome he is for finishing college so young. He does it in a demeaning manner that will make you feel so bad that you actually need to earn a living
he is a good teacher..very funny...you will have fun but be ready to take criticism
Mr. P is dope. Totally down to earth. He makes us read about women's issues, gender stuff, and he's feminist, but he made me think twice about a lot of rap music and stuff. We wrote super long papers and he's not easy, but he's not dull and the topics were interesteing.
Best 8am class I have ever woken up for. Teacher makes things interesting. If you give it a good effort you should get a good grade. He grades fairly and is available to help you pass his class. If you use him to pass his class. You will
This was my favorite class of the semester. We had really good class discussion on current issues & the topics were really interesting. He is a tough grader, but he helps a lot with your writing. He gives enough extra credit opportunities. He's not easy, he requires very detailed analysis's in the essays, but there isn't too much homework.
great professor!! he is tough on grammar but thats for our own good. i learn alot in that class. and he keeps his lectures interesting.
Sam is an amazing professor who really challenges you to bring your best. Writing is my strength, but the exposure he provides to different poets and writing styles will make you question any prior confidence you may have had in what makes a poem a poem. The direction I gained from him is invaluable, and I am a better student for following his advice. No one can make you a poet, but he showed me what WASN'T poetry. And that was very powerful.
Best English Teacher ever! He is my favorite teacher at mjc, I wish he taught every class. You write long essays, but he teaches you how to write them just how he wants. you get to write about barbie, and magazines. He is really nice.He offers a lot of extra credit, and if you speak up in class he brings up your grade
He is one of the best teachers I've taken at MJC. You have to write long papers but he's clear on what he wants and how to write them. He's funny and entertaining and if you like gender studies this would be a class for you. If you pay attention and do the work properly you shouldn't have a problem passing the class.
AMAZING!!! Such a good, hilarious and clear teacher. Take him for English 101. 4 papers, but each have really cool topics. Helps you on everything and makes class fun.
He integrates gender studies into English 101. HE IS NOT EASY. 4 major papers. Must write at least 8 pages each if you want a good grad.e But if you want to learn to write, this is your guy.Gives you all the tools to pass. Use the FB class page and attend class.Only way to fail is if you don't do the writing assignments. Participation is also key
Although Mr. Pierstorff is entertaining to listen to, his grading style is unlike anything every used by teachers. He attempts to compare your essay with a classmates essay in order to justify his scoring. If you take his class, just write a whole lot. Quantity over quality in Mr. Pierstorff's class.
He is an amazing professor!!! Very helpful and provides help with essays. Topics are fun to write about. Books are cheap he always looks out for his students. Best English 101 professor!!!
he is very helpful, he grades really tough on the essays but he explains well and helps!
I've taken Mr. P. twice, for English 101 and 50. He is SUCH a great teacher, and his topics are never boring. He has a Facebook page for his class and so it's very easy to contact him or even get feedback from your classmates. Tip:FIRST paper is the hardest, I would recommend spending as much time on it as possible.Take him! Wish he taught 103.
He's just simply amazing. Helps you through everything and he's never serious. He's hilarious!
loved mr. p. wrote my butt off.
I took his poetry class for an activities requirement, but the class was not as enjoyable as I hoped. He required that you write poetry only to have yourself humiliated in class through "critiques". Great class for a seious writer, not so great for someone looking to get an easy A for an activities requirement.
Sam was a great poetry teacher. He helps you become a better writer. His critiques are professional, helpful and entertaining. He is definitely hilarious and fun. I'd recommend him!
Pierstorff is defiantly in my top 3 favorite professors. He is hilarious, and the material we read is interesting! I wish he taught English 103!! I worked hard for my A in his class, but if you go to class and do all the assignments, you'll pass. You won't be disappointed with taking him!
Professor Peirstorff is probably one of the best teachers I've had at MJC. It was my first class of the day (8 am. I hate mornings!) and this guy made my mornings just a little bit better. He's hilarious! He makes class very interesting. There's a lot of writing but he helps you pretty much step by step! His facebook page is also VERY helpful!
Pierstorff is a great instructor. His opinions are very clear, and unlike many instructors at MJC. Although he is firm on his opinions, he does like to hear opposing opinions, and will not dock you down for it. You do need to utilize both books he assigns in order to pass all of the essays. Ask questions and go to his assigned tutor. I loved him!
He is very interesting so class is never boring. He is very humorous. He makes everything really clear and is very organized.. so if you show up and pay attention you WILL succeed. I definitely recommend taking his class
Best teacher I have ever had at MJC. Sam is hilarious and really engages the whole class during each lecture. Took this class at 6:30 AM and it was my favorite class
6:30 AM class was never this fun! He does his best as a teacher to help students. If you don't like much class room interaction or are sensitive to controversial subjects, this class may not be for you. If you really want to get a hang of writing, this teacher is excellent! Best of the best.
6:30 AM class, and I loved it! 3 essays and a final make up the class. You have a chance to re-do an essay at the end if you messed up. Loved hearing his educated opinion and his allowance for others to speak their mind. He teaches you how to do it and WHY you're doing instead of throwing it at you.
Funny guy but not enough to make up for the content of the class. He claims to be progressive thinker but really the topics he teaches are conformative and hardly revolutionary. I was excited to take his class because of the focus on gender, however, all he did was talk about stereotypical biases as if they were universal truths.
Sam is so great! He's very funny and outgoing. He is very clear in what he expects and the class is fairly easy if you just show up and take notes. There are 4 essays throughout the semester (including the final), and the homework is fairly easy and minimal. By far the best English class I have ever taken. The Facebook group is extremely helpful!
Great teacher! Took his class at 6:30AM and he managed to keep us all awake and interested during class! Homework was super easy and there wasn't much of it, essays weren't too difficult because of the workshops in class and overall great class.
Even though the class was at 6:30 AM, he definitely made up for it. He's super funny and loves getting involved in the topics we discuss (gender). There's a Facebook page which was really helpful for asking questions, getting assignments, etc. Three 6 page essays and one in-class essay (final). Two small books that are needed. Awesome prof.
wouldn't take his class again, very tough on grading.
I am amazed at some of these reviews. if you want an easy professor take Netto. If you want a good professor, who will help you learn how to write a great paper take Pierstorff. Longstory short- The people arguing about grading are the same ones who didn't go to class when he told them he will give 1on1 help with each persons eassys. expect2learn
I absolutely loved Sam's creative writing poetry class. He came off as a little full of himself in the beginning, but he's a great professor and wonderful writer. He's very helpful and always gives excellent feedback during workshops. I've definitely grown as a writer throughout this semester. I would recommend his class to anyone.
He is a very good teacher who takes poetry very seriously and so as students, you should do. This is a class intended for those that want to truly learn about poetry. He is a very good teacher and tries his best to help you with your writing.
I took Sam's class at 6:30am and he made the class fun. I was a little anxious going back to school after ten years. The first essay was tough but Sam gives you an outline of what he expects on the essays. His lectures were awesome. I learned so much more than what I expected from an English class. I would definitely take him again.
My favorite class actually.
He's very nice but he will make u a perfect writer so be ready to learn
Professor Pierstorff is straight forward with his classes from the beginning of the semester follows his syllabus all the way through.
Wildly popular and engaging teacher, but might not be your cup of tea. Beware of voicing unpopular opinions. Grade is based on 2 papers and effort for your poems. Speak up, have fun, strengthen your skills, and pay attention to what your poems can improve on. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. It's tempting, but don't. You will fail.
This class was awesome! I never really liked English but professor Pierstorff made class so interesting and fun I enjoyed English for once. He's always willing to help the ones who ask for help. I would recommend this professor if you really want to improve your writing skills and putting essays together Also looking forward to taking his 101 class
I've been at MJC for too long now so I've had quite a few teachers, but Mr Pierstorff is now number one on my list of favorite teachers. He makes the class interesting so you never wonder when the class is going to be over or if you should drop it. Do the homework and classwork and you will do fine in this class!
This is definitely one of those classes where you get what you deserve. The grades you get on essays will pretty much reflect the effort you put in so actually try. It's difficult but not impossible to pass. You don't always have to show up but it helps and Professor Pierstorff always has something interesting to talk about so it's never boring.
Hard grader, but YOU WILL LEARN. Put in the effort, and you'll pass. I always struggled with english, but I managed to receive an A in the class. Do ALL the extra credit !!!!
If I could I would have added almost all the tags. He's funny and imaginative so it makes the subject matter very easy to get yourself in the right space to write. He's an amazing professor. Can't say enough good things about him. Except if you don't take his class, you are truly missing out!
Professor Pierstorff will teach you things that will not only help you with English alone, but he will also enlighten the simple things that we as students miss. Just show up everyday, and do the work and you will pass. I'm glad I took his class. (He also even helped me write my history paper and show me how to do it step-by-step. ) NO REGRETS!!!!
Pierstorff is definitely a tough grader, but you learn so much in this class. 3 major essays throughout the semester, they are roughly about 3000 words minimum. Topics are relatable and very interesting. Just be ready to put in the work. Attendance is not mandatory but will make or break the content of your essay.
Professor Pierstorff is my favorite teacher because he gives excellent feedback on papers and although he makes you work for your grade, his hilarious, motivational, and inspiring lectures make the class worth it. I would absolutely take his class again. We have weekly journal entires, 3 take-home essays and one in-class essay for the final.
Sam is an awesome guy, he will definitely teach you how to critically think. He's not a grammar Nazi, he wants to see that you can effectively pull hidden pieces from something. He's very Liberal, I'm very Conservative, so it made for great discussions on assignments and in class. He enjoys in depth analysis of issues, you won't regret his class.
Best teacher I ever had.
Absolutely loved his class!! Never missed a day. Very clear and fair grading. Would highly recommend his class I give this Ninja Poet a 10+. Teresa Moore
Professor Pierstorff is an inspirational, kind, and precious man who provides a great time for his students during a semester. I was taking his English 105 (Creative writing), and I learned a lot from him, not only about poetry writing, but about being a real human who has a voice. I really recommend taking class with this caring professor.
I took this class in the spring. It was amazing the books we read was so good. It gave me a different perspective of a feminist. He was really caring & understanding. Great teacher! I definitely recommend him.
Sam was an amazing professor. He had us read two books that I thought were really good reads. They were relevant books and I think are relatable, not boring. He was super funny and involved with his students.
loved him. Best professor makes class fun. great teaching style.
Professor Pierstorff is an amazing professor. He is super supportive, respectful, non judgmental, you can totally tell he loves being an instructor. He has amazing tips on how to organize a paper, lots of good information that will be extremely helpful for other classes. If you fear going back to college a great professor to help get you going.
TO be very honest. Sam Pierstorff is a good human. but not he best professor. I felt very judged every single day I walked into his class. A very inflated ego that disrupts him from teaching anything because he wont stop talking about himself. In some ways he can be very immature which turns into him making fun of poeple. He should dissolve the ego
I love this teacher, he was one of my favorite teachers. If you don't pass an essay he lets you do it over again to make sure you are doing the essay correctly I loved the feedback he gave me because that's the only way I learned to write better essays. I liked how he showed me the writing formula to organize my essays it was very helpful.
He was by far my favorite English professor, he gives you absolutely everything you need to succeed in not only his class, but others as well. He always gives amazing feedback that way you are always working to better yourself. Honestly the only way you can fail is by not showing up and/or not putting in effort.
He's incredibly supportive to students of all skill levels, and provides lots of clear and good advice about how to write/read and about life too. He's funny, thought-provoking, and passionate about his work. His class is work intensive, but he rewards you based on growth and what you put into it. Overall a teacher of compassion and good vibes.
Sam tries to act like a tough instructor, but he's really sweet. Still, be sure to show up for every, single class and speak up! This will matter at the end of the semester when he grades your participation. Try to get your poems in the first 8 weeks so you can get the most criticism possible and use the rest of the class to revise them. 10/10!
The best teacher I have ever had. Super funny guy and makes everyone feel important and respected
I loved his poetry class, it's in my top 3 that I've taken at MJC. If you have a problem speaking in front of people, it may be a little difficult, but the environment that Sam creates in his classroom makes it a lot easier. It's a super easy and enjoyable class as long as you write your poems, I looked forward to going every week. There's no tests
This is by far the best professor I had while attending MJC. He is inspiring and makes learning easy. He gets you to open up in ways you never thought you would. If you dont just want a professor but you want someone to look up to, take any of his classes, you will not regret it
This is by far one of the best classes I have ever taken. Hes funny, his lectures are never boring, and he gives you EVERYTHING you need to succeed in his class. There are quite a few papers but if you are an active participant you should have no trouble passing this class at all!
Excellent Professor! Really enjoyed the semester. Nice assignments that make you think, good discussion topics. Not difficult but you have to do HW ON TIME and will have to try a little bit, otherwise an easy A. One of the best Professors I've had at MJC. Dude is a saint
He is selective on which students he grades tough. Will take up class time telling you about his entire life and what he has accomplished. Went to his office hours for extra help and he didn't even speak to me or read my paper to give me feedback. I felt very uncomfortable around him.
English is not my strongest subject, especially being out of the school environment for over 30 years. Taking Professor Pierstorff's class was quite rewarding. As long as you pay attention, watch his video clips, and not procrastinate, you'll be fine.
Great professor. He explains everything super well! guides through the essays. Discussion posts every week except essay week. I highly recommend attending class you miss lots of information. Be ready to discussion in class! JUST GO IT he really appreciates it.
Pierstorff was an amazing teacher that offered so much help. He had computer labs where he would help students write their essays. Class was not mandatory, but missing it would result in the loss of a lot of info. Just put in the effort, and attend all the help you can get from him and you will do great. He offers so many chances for learning.
Friendly professor, always willing to answer questions and offer help.
Infatuated with his past and egotistical. Kind of wild how self centered he is. Must of been picked on as a kid. Not a fair grader. Expects quality over quality. Find another professor.
Professor Pierstorff is a supportive and engaging teacher who provides helpful feedback to improve your writing. While the workload can be demanding, using resources like Unstuck ai and the free textbook can make the class manageable. Attend office hours and you'll do well.
1000/10 professor. Felt like he truly cared and wanted to help. Learned more about myself and he's changed my perspective on life.
Very smart professor, he knows a lot about poetry and introduced me to a lot of styles and techniques that I had no idea about. If you want a class to help you improve on your creative writing, take his 105 course.
He is the one of greatest and funniest professors I have
He graded/gave feedback on ONE discussion post. Every essay that we completed in the class was graded by some grad student and she was the one giving feedback. Tells self-inflated stories about himself and then doesn't even care enough to look at your paper.
Does not answer emails. Narcissistic behavior, doesn't and can't take accountability for poor time management or his own mistakes in the course. Uses pseudoscience as gospel and a core part of his course, be prepared to write essays on it. Attendance is half of your grade, and he does not post assignment requirements online. Ask friends for them.
