Rambles like no other, if you can read powerpoints then might as well sleep in because that is all he does. Also test might as well take a hat and pick a random answer out of it because that is how his exams are. I would rather cut my arm off then take this class.
This class is very difficult. Tests are rediculous, and the final grade is only the average of the 5 tests (Nothing else to help your grade). No matter how hard you study, I think it is impossible to get an A on a test. He is a really nice teacher, and is willing to help if you need it. Also makes the info interesting at times.
Avoid him at all costs. I have to agree with the comments above. All he does for lecture is read the powerpoints, and the tests require you to remember every single little detail. I think it was his goal to allow no one to make an A on a test. He acts like he wants you to come to him for help, but he really isn't helpful at all.
If you think you're headed for the "easy" biochemistry class, think again. Sparace, although an extremely nice man, is probably the worst professor I've ever had. Lectures are fuzzy and the tests are hard. He says that he intentionally puts Qs on the exam that he expects no one to get right. Take this class by itself if you want to do well.
I hated this class. He only read the powerpoints. The test are impossible and it was boring. I dreaded it everyday. I loved the subject before hand and how feel like it is a horrible subject. He is a researcher, not a teacher.
Hardest class ive taken at clemson yet. Its pretty pointless to go to class just memorize every single word on every single slide and you might get a C on the tests. The curve is enormous so an A isnt impossible. I probably studied about 60 hours for each test but I got an A.
This class is awful. I dreaded it every single day. His tests are absolutely impossible. He requires that you memorize every single detail. On top of that, he makes his questions tricky so that you'll get tripped up. My least favorite class I've ever taken at Clemson by far
By far the hardest class I've taken at Clemson. Whether you study 4 hours or 40 hours the test are still impossible. Very nice guy but hard to stay awake during lectures so I recommend sleeping.
The TA's think he's too hard for us students. His test are impossible. He wants you to know every detail in his numerous slides. This class is almost impossible. I liked the material but his testing techniques could care less about the concepts you learnt.
Best professor I've taken at Clemson. His tests are hard as crap but they are the only tests I've had in any class that require you to actually know and understand the information. I remember more from that class than any other because I couldn't bullcrap anything. He made me learn.
Let me fist say that he is a nice man and I've actually learned a lot in this class. HOWEVER, his tests are extremely hard... I mean the hardest I've ever taken... and its very frusterating because no matter how hard I study, I never seem to do well. I know this class may be unavoidable, if so be prepaired for a rough semester!!
Worst class I have ever taken at Clemson. Terrible grading scale. This class is mandatory for some majors and he is the only one that teaches it.
He's probably the most difficult teacher I've ever had and ever will have. His tests suck and make me miserable every time I take them but the way he tests you forces you to actually learn the material unlike most professors do. It's a really difficult class but if you need to know the information for the future he's the one to take.
This class is like getting kicked in the nuts by Mr. Rogers. Hardest tests of my career but I learned he drops hints in class on what he's gonna ask. throw the book away because everything you need is on powerpoints and talk with him as much as possible
Sparace's tests are challenging, but not absolutely impossible. This class was much easier than my engineering courses. Also it helps if you get to know him by visiting his office. I got an uncurved 85 and got an A.
Extremely hard..!!!
Hands down WORST bio teacher ever..his tests are extremely unfair, and although he curves, it doesnt really help at all. He asks random crap that is not in the textbook or covered in class. Avoid him at all costs! He will screw your GPA over.
He rambles about useless information and reads straight off power points..might as well skip class because thats all he does. His tests are impossible, you are better off guessing random letters than you are actually taking them. If possible, avoid him..worst biology experience EVER!
if you have some degree of common sense and you know how to read powerpoints and take practice tests this is a great class. I got an uncurved 72 which curved up to an A. He is a really nice man who is there to help whenever.. it helps to go to his office and ask questions. if you like teaching yourself and like not having attendance i recommend it
tests are VERY difficult, unless you are amazing at biology you can count on not doing well on them. the good news is that he curves the exams a lot so usually if you get a C on an exam then it will be an A. Class isn't mandatory though and he posts his powerpoints online so you can just teach your self the infor and still do okay in the class
His powerpoints are really helpful and his reviews (if you attend them) tell you what you need to know for the exam.
No homework or quizes, only 4 test. Optional review sessions with professor before each test and he gives out previous tests for practice and uses back of the book chapter questions on test. Really willing to answer any questions and help out!
I am an A student however despite going to class everyday and going to all the optional reviews and online chapter questions I only managed a C in the class. His tests are impossible and aren't based off the book and the reviews aren't helpful at all. The averages of all the tests were F's.GET ANOTHER TEACHER IF YOU CAN!
Tests are impossible! There's a curve but it's not enough to get you an A in the class, had to work really hard for a C! Get another professor if possible!!
You just sit in class while he reads thru the powerpoints so you really don't need to go to class. His exams are hard but he uses a phenomenal curve. Also he puts some end of the chapter questions directly on tests. 4 tests. Final is just a regular test
Biochemistry Lab with Sparace was a joke. Just show up for the labs and make somewhat of an attempt at the lab reports and you will make an A in the class. People complained that the tests were difficult, but if you cram for a few hours, you will do well.
Took him for 103 and made a C. Had to take them again for 104 and made an A. His tests are ridiculous. Always has a HUGE curve but he's so fact-happy. You have to spend HOURS AND HOURS studying to get above a C. Sure, you learn a lot, but I promise it isn't worth all the time you have to spend on it. Have a social life and do not take Sparace.
What he does during class could hardly be considered teaching. He mostly reads off his PowerPoints and does nothing else. I stopped going to class completely because it was almost pointless - you only need to download his PP's and show up on test days to make a passing grade. His tests are impossible, but he curves massively.
Good teacher. Can be boring, but he makes the information easy to understand. Has all the notes on BB, study guides for the exam, tips from former students, and sample exams. If you actually read the material outside of class and make some type of study guide, you can easily get a B. No one is willing to put in the work though.
Awful. I hated his class. The tests are so confusing and the averages for his tests are failing grades so you don't really learn much and all he does is read off of the power point that usually has nothing to do with the test. Most of the people with good grades had already taken good bio classes in high school.
Class requires a lot of effort. He reads off the powerpoints but he does know his material and gets excited about it. Tests are hard, but not bad if you put in the work. Crucial to study to textbook and powerpoints. If you are a semi-hard worker and not a bad test taker, this is not a bad class.
Worst teacher I've had at Clemson. He is monotoned and boring. I learned better without even going to the classes. All he does is read the powerpoint. He makes the time go by so slowly.
This man is the worst teacher I have ever had. All he does is read the PowerPoints and does not explain anything ever. His tests are absolutely impossible to get even an 80 on but he majorly curves. I don't go to class because I get nothing from it and teach myself all the material. I have a 63 which equates to a B.
Save yourself and DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is SO TERRIBLY AWFUL. Worst teacher I've ever had BY FAR.
Sparace is a nice guy and is very knowledgeable. The class consist of him reading through loads of information in PowerPoints (that he does provide). The test are extremely difficult (class average around 60). He does curve exam: bottom 1/3 D-F, middle 1/3 have a C, top 1/3 A-B This class can be a GPA killer. I would not recommend for this class.
Don't get him for Bio!! He is a very intelligent person, but it is clear that he is just here to do his research. His tests are very very hard, no matter how much you study. Class attendance is not taken, and going to class was not very beneficial. Study the end of chapter questions, chapter study guides, and powerpoint slides!
His class would be impossible if not for the curve. With the curve, it's definitely manageable. You don't have to go to class but usually he drops hints during class as to what the test questions will be like. Holds review sessions. Some of the end of chapter questions are on the tests verbatim. He's a nice man, I personally liked him.
NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!! DON'T DO IT! All he does in class is read off of the powerpoint and talk about soy beans. You have to teach yourself. Tests are ridiculously hard. He curves a lot, but get a teacher who will actually teach you something. Save yourself.
He's a little odd and his tests are challenging, but I liked him much better than my previous BIOL professor. Tips for success: attend all classes (which are at a decent hour anyway), takes notes during his powerpoint lectures (I would recopy them into word to make studying easier), study off of the powerpoints and use the book for extra help (:
DON'T DO IT! The tests are NOTHING like the powerpoints. You have to know background information on the class topics to know anything on the tests. Memorizing the info is not enough. The class average for each test is about a 50. When you read these posts and think that it'll be okay if you stay in his class, it won't. Worst mistake of my life.
NOOOOO! DON'T DO IT! If you're signed up for his class, drop it even if you have to request the other options. GPA killer! The average grade for his tests are a 50...clearly he's doing something wrong. He loves the material so much that he makes the tests impossible. SAVE YOURSELF.
Powerpoints difficult to decipher and study
Get out fast!! He is such a nice guy and tries to be funny during lectures, but the tests are impossible. They are so hard to study for and no matter how hard you study, you still fail without the curve.
His tests are based off of random facts from his 70 slide per chapter powerpoints. It's useless to go to class. His tests are made for bio professors, not students. I had a high grade for him just because I didnt go to class and read the book. Avoid.
Tough. You have to be willing to put in a lot of time and effort to do well. Go to class. At the end of the semester so many people stopped coming that he gave the kids who came to class test answers. Read book before class and take notes while you read. I have an A so it's possible to do well if you really want to.
You definitely have to put in effort and make sure you know the material! I don't think people on here are really putting forth their full effort. He is super willing to see you in his office hours and he is really nice. I worked really hard and got an A; it's all about the effort you put in.
This class was really hard--my friends who were bio majors said that some of the concepts were more advanced than intro to bio. The average score for tests was always a D or F but he adds massive curves. He's a really great guy and he's willing to meet with you outside of class if you show initiative. Do everything he recommends to succeed.
Hardest teacher I have had at Clemson. Avoid at all cost. Lectures are boring and then the test are way harder than they need to be. Curves tests which is essential to a good grade.
His class is super boring, but sometimes he gives test question answers, which helps. All I do is study the power points and memorize the information. I do think it's tricky, but I think you will be okay if you put a lot of time into studying for exams
Sparace is a great person, but not a very good professor. He is willing to do anything for his students except create fair tests. He actually told us in a review session one time that he would not test us on concepts he thought we would know. The curve is great, but do not expect to learn much from him.
I wouldn't voluntarily take his class. He is very confusing! Make sure you read your textbook! Actually just choose another professor!
He really wants people to learn, but just doesn't know how to go about teaching. Every class he goes through slides which he puts online for everyone. If you don't like going to class, he is the teacher for you. Just read the book, do the online quizzes and review that power points and you will be fine. He likes you to do the end of chapter Qs.
His lecture class is pointless. If you just read the lab notebook you will have all the answers and never have to go to class. He just rambles on during his lectures. His exams are made to be very difficult and he wants a 70 avg and will curve to that grade. Do not expect a grade change at all if you ask, wouldn't give me 0.6 of a pt.
His tests are much harder than what he lectures about in class. Do yourself and your GPA a favor and take a different intro to bio teacher, you'll be glad you did.
His class is extremely hard because he is so in depth and wants you to be able to catch and remember everything that he says which is hard. Some people don't go to class, but I would advise you go if you do get stuck with him because he is petty and drops hints when less people are in class. End of chapter questions and quiz questions are in exams
If this is going to be one of your first college courses you will be taking, do not take it from him. I took him my first semester of my freshman year and it was horrible. He tries to explain concepts and ideas that are discussed in the chapter, but he is still unable to get his point across of what to study. Great guy, not a great professor.
Sparace is a kind and knowledgable man, especially on the topic of soybeans. He's not very great at explaining questions, one on one he's okay. But his does give great feedback and updates on how you're doing. Just study his ppts. and key details he mentions and you will be fine. He grades extremely fair, I liked it. I liked the textbook, optional.
He knows what he's talking about and seems like he cares a lot about his students, but his tests are absurd (fortunately he scales them). He also needs hearing aids, desperately.
I highly recommend him. He's intelligent and loves answering questions. Although every bio class is complexed don't expect it to be easy. Spark's lectures are long but he includes detailed slides, where most of the exams are from. He does extra credit and never takes attendence, so you can skip if the lectures seems boring to you.
please for your own safety avoid this professor like the plague. his class will ruin your GPA and cause you to go insane. STAY AWAY. other teachers may give more work but you will do MUCH better in their class.
Professor Sparace was a very, very nice man. Always asked me how I was doing if I sat up front in class and just generally very kind hearted. That being said, his exams were the hardest exams I've ever had to take. The extent of detail that you need to know is ridiculous and he only talks about the detail in class so if you skip, you won't pass.
Sparace is very difficult and boring. His lectures are hard to sit through. I met with him for help with testing and he was very helpful and nice. I would recommend taking another professor, but it is not impossible to get an A because he curves all his tests heavily.
Dr. Sparace is a great man, and he cares about his students. However, I don't think he realizes how hard his class is compared to others. This class felt like it was worth 4 credit hours and I struggled to get a B. He curves his exams up to a 70 average, but won't curve more than 10 points, meaning that the average on our final exam was a 62.
Even though this class is a basic gen-ed biology course, he makes it much more challenging than it needs to be. The tests are meticulous, 50 multiple choice questions on sometimes more than 200 slides of heavy material. I would definitely take a different professor because the curve was nice (or everyone would fail) but it didn't seem worth it.
He loves plants! to get an A in his class study all of his powerpoint material, copy learning catalytic questions, copy questions from back of the book, and copy down the questions from mastering biology and study all of that a couple days before the test. He has very funny dry humor. Also do all the dynamic study modules for 2% added to grade
You want to learn biology? Take a class with my man Sparace. You'll learn biology. Just make sure you study too. His tests are tough but the curve balances it out.
In Sparace's class, attendance isn't mandatory since all of the important info is already on the slides. Use his resources on canvas for the exams and don't be surprised if you get a 50 on the first one (luckily he uses a classwide bell curve for each test). His tests are hard, but you'll get a kick out of him and his soybeans.
I would not recommend this guy to anyone. He's a cute old man, but seems much more involved in his research than teaching his biology course effectively. Also, he adds like a 20 point curve to every exam because nobody can ever seem to get higher than a 70 on them. I barely passed this class with a C, while I would've had straight A's. Don't do it.
I would bot recommend this professor to anyone. After failing the first test with the curve, I stopped paying attention in classes and just spent several hours teaching myself the information out of the book. Finished the class with a 65 and it counted as a B, that's how much he has to curve it to pass some of his students. Not worth it.
I would not take this professor ever again. He's test are crazy hard compared to other exams for the same course. The lectures are confusing and not interesting. DO NOT TAKE!!!
I really like Professor Sparace! He is a really sweet guy and is always willing to help if you go to his office or ask questions. He makes his class hard but he grades on a curve with his own scale, so for my class, an A was anything above an 85 or so. He makes you work for it, but ultimately I enjoyed his class.
I got an A because I studied hard for every test but in reality.. he curves 20 percent. I probably ended with like an 80 (maybe) and finished with an A because he gives SO much extra credit. Don't worry if you get 60s (or 40s) on the tests because he literally curves so much. How to get Bs on test: memorize all LC questions and practice tests/ PPS
This class is challenging and the tests are difficult but heavily curved. If you have no interest in biology and are only taking it to satisfy a gen-ed req, this isn't the class for you. If you enjoy biology and want to dig deeper, this class is perfect for you. Professor Sparace is very kind and is always available to help and answer questions.
He is a very sweet older man, 100% a good guy. His class is fairly difficult due to the fact that he creates his own exams and he makes sure they are difficult. His exam averages are usually below passing. He does curve each exam based on the class average. In my class he ended up freezing the curve and a 75 was an A and a 63 was a B.
He is AWFUL. His test are ridiculously hard. He does NOT teach. He tests you on questions and topics that are not mentioned in class. Although his bell curve is really nice, its still impossible to pass with anything above a D. Do not recommend taking him. He doesnt drop any grade and offers no extra credit. Avoid taking any of his classes.
At first I did NOT like him and struggled on exams. However, as time went on I learned how to study (just memorize the PowerPoint slides) and I went from getting a D on the first exam to getting an A on the last exam without the curve. His curve is amazing (75%+ is an A). The class was all self studying going to class didnt help me personally.
Tests are insanely hard. Studied many many hours to barely get above a 50%. Half of the test is not even covered in the powerpoints. Lectures are like 3 hours for each chapter. Locks our grade and makes it hard to access it.
I took this class as a gen-ed and it made me hate bio. His exams are extremely hard, and his lectures are soooo long. He's super sweet, but made the information non-digestible because he throws so much at you. If you want to do well on the exams, start studying weeks ahead. He has an amazing curve, and thats the only reason I pulled a B!
No. Just no. 100% great, sweet man but his class is so hard. Exams are super challenging and he pulls the questions out of thin air. So hard.
Prof. Sparace is a sweet guy and is really passionate about biology, but his class is extremely difficult. He does have a great curve because his tests are so hard (class average was around a 50 on our first two tests) and this semester a 75+ was an A. You will do well if you memorize every question from practice exams, quizzes and LC.
Do not take!!! He makes his own test and they are almost impossible to pass. He does have a huge curve, but it still has barely helped me. I took him because of everyone talking about the curve but i fully wish I took another professor. They class average on tests are all Fs and he doesnt care at all.
Mr. Sparace is not a good teacher. He is a very nice guy but cares too much about biology and doesn't teach it well. His tests are almost impossible and if you do decent on the tests, the curve doesn't help that much. there is a lot of extra credit but the tests are more important. I would not recommend taking him, and he doesn't round .23 up to A.
Sparace is the sweetest old man, but can be very boring. In class, take notes off of powerpoint and his lectures. Outside of class, do the mastering biology extra credit hw, quizzes, and DO THE SAMPLE TESTS he gives you. His tests are hard, but if you do all of the above, it is easy to get a 74+ which he gives a huge curve and will result in an A.
This class was just a lot for a first ever semester of college. He curves his tests and grades majorly, however the tests are the hardest things I have ever done and they count for 90% of your grade. His class is doable just be more prepared to put the work in and teach yourself a lot of concepts in the beginning than I was.
His tests are not easy, but he provides you with everything you need to do good on them. Almost every question is taken from previous exams that he posts and the online quizzes. There is a huge curve and he has a ton of extra credit. Watch his recorded lectures and read the textbook. I recommend him over any other bio teacher if you want an A.
Honestly you just need to go to lecture/read PowerPoints with notes/listen to recordings (all same thing) and read the textbook (its written very simply). He has a good curve and is boring but I took it again bc I like the way he runs it.
Very boring class, topics not always centered around the test, good curve
Dr Sparace is very knowledgable, but his lectures are sooo painful to sit through. He is a nice guy, and is helpful one on one. He does reuse a lot of questions from quizzes and past exams on current exams, but the exams are very difficult. He has an amazing curve where 75+ is an A. Don't take this class if you aren't willing to study for it a lot.
Great guy, I ended with just below an A but if I had studied a little harder I definitely could have gotten the A. He gives a lot of extra credit and the curve is amazing. His lectures can be boring especially towards the end of the class, but if you go to class he's actually a pretty funny and interesting guy. Take him for 1040.
He holds review sessions for exams and has an EXCELLENT curve. I ended up taking his class again, knowing what I was in for. You really have to pay attention and memorize a lot of information and I ended up getting a C (I did not study that much so not bad). I would recommend taking him but it's not the end of the world if you don't.
Not the best prof I could've taken. Thankful I'm not going to med school otherwise this would've been endgame. If anything saves you it'll be the curve and rereading past exam questions (he provides) + you better hope you get consistent >40s on the exams or else it won't do much for you. Office hours are pointless, 96s-100s on exams are unheard of
Professor Sparace is nice, but his lectures are definitely boring and hard to pay attention to. This course is basically designed to be self-taught. If you read the textbook, take notes, do all the quizzes then the extra credit and study hard... then you can probably swing a B in the class. The curve is huge on every test so you can rely on that.
Professor Sparace is very sweet and kind. His exams have an average of around 50%, but he gives really good curves. If you got 79% or better, you got an A on the exam. The only bad part is that you don't know your grade until all the grades are in.
Sparace is so sweet and very passionate about his teachings, however his tests are so hard and his class is 98% lecture and 2% practice. The class moves very fast but he does offer office hours once a week for about and hour or so. He is very good with communication and is very understanding, but this class is very difficult.
Prof Sparace is sweet & very passionate about bio, but his exams are no joke. Because of that, he has a huge curve, so a 79% or higher will get you an A. His class is very doable as long as you take the time to review the textbook, his slideshows & especially his past exams (those were VERY helpful!). You can totally pass as long as you work hard!!
Just simply don't take him. He has a good curve but that's only so people can pass his class
Great dude, not the best prof. He expected you to take notes beforehand and then review in class. To pass the class, you need to have a strong memory, it's a class of memorization, not understanding. USE PREVIOUS EXAM QUESTIONS, HOMEWORK, & LCQs!!!! He gives great extra credit and has review sessions, I would not have passed if not for the curve.
He is so sweet! Class is just all lectures, but he provides plenty of practice questions through old exams and homework. The class itself is hard, but as long as you put in the work you'll be fine!
Sparace is such a hard teacher. All his classes are just boring lectures, reading right off the powerpoint slides. All the exams were unnecessarily hard even after studying for days. He has a nice curve that a lot of people rely on to just pass the class. If you can take someone else, I suggest that you do.
I stopped going to his class in October, because he curves so hard. Class is almost entirely based on your score on 4 tests, but your final grade is heavily curved. My final average was a 46, but I got a C and credit for the class. Would take again for sure.
