Sam is one of the best speakers around at the SFU campus. He is always there for his students and is easily accessible for help. Participation is encouraged in lecture and there will be group projects and individual assignments; overall not too difficult. Read the text, go to lecture, and you'll do well. A prof that truly cares for his students!
Amazing
Great speaker
A solid lecturer but does not provide the right information about the midterm or finals. A fair grader, but TA's tend to mark a lot harder.
Very knowledgable of the course
Sam Thiara is a unique lecturer. He is unique because he has a passion for his students and the learning aspects of the course. He is a great speaker and he articulates well the information related to the course. Be aware of being called upon to participate in lectures. But, overall, I would definitely take him again.
Thiara is very sincere ahd approachable. He was a pleasure to meet. However, his lectures do not thoroughly cover all the topics in the chapters, so be sure to read the textbook. Midterm was fair; study and you should do fine.
I was really nervous coming straight from high school into Business. However, professor Thiara has made me feel comfortable. He encourages discussion and he does not shoot down your opinions (which I appreciated). He genuinely cares about others too. Course content may be "common sense" but that is irrelevant since the profs teach the same slides..
It was because of a friend's recommendation, that I decided to enrol into his class. Sam is a great person, not just a professor, but a mentor, a friend, and a storyteller. One thing that makes him stand out is his personality. He teaches because he loves to educate, and inspire. If he wants anything, it is for you to succeed and be your very best.
I definitely wouldn't say "inspirational" but he kept the class awake for material that is generally pretty pedestrian. If you can make it to class and read the text, you'll get a good mark.
Sam was my favorite lecturer, he's very passionate about teaching and there for his students. Although his lectures are long, he keeps the students engaged. 10/10 would recommend to any new students coming in to take business.
Great prof; cares about his students, cares about his job. The course material was pretty basic and boring but he still managed to make his lectures engaging. If you have the chance to take a class with Sam, do not hesitate.
Sam is a very inspirational individual who truly cares for his work and his students. He is knowledgeable and experienced in many aspects of the business world and is more than willing to share. His lectures outline the textbook material in an engaging manner but the exams are based off of the textbook. He encourages class participation.
I wasn't very keen for the course material and structure (very memorization-based and the assignments were pretty tedious), but I'm so thankful I took it with Sam. Though he's not really an extraordinary lecturer, he surely is a great person. He always made an effort to make sure I was doing alright, and truly cared for his students.
Sam is a great professor. Although his lectures aren't too interesting, he does what he can to keep the class engaged and informed. He truly loves his job and cares for his students, and you don't see that passion around much anymore. Take any class with Sam, and seek support if you need it. He's awesome.
Sam is friendly and positive. The course didn't say anything new but that isn't Sam's fault. I'd like to take a more meaningful class with him.
Sam's a great prof who cares about his students and encourages students to participate in class. However, no rubric for projects so we don't know what we lost marks on. Also, don't expect to get your grades right away. All of them will show up after the semester ends. Nothing was marked except for the midterm before evaluations so don't be fooled.
One of my favourite professors at SFU so far! Felt very welcoming whenever I was in his lectures despite the fact that it was a class of 200+.
definitely my fav professor of this semester!! So caring and inspiring. I can tell that he puts his heart and soul into teaching. his lecture notes might not be super helpful for the exams but still good for your learning.
Sam is really chilled and makes the course easier for you. In my opinion he's the best beedie proff.
Respected prof
Sam did a reasonable job but I can't say he was excellent. He does try hard but he seems to be a salesman sometimes.
I never feel sad after week 13 ended. However, when bus 200 ended I feel really empty, added with how Sam says goodbye with a presentation at the end. I really love the way he teaches and this is the best prof I have ever got in my life. He's so kind, motivated and inspiring.
He was a good prof but tended to go off on tangents during his lectures. The tangents focused more on the students and our growth than the actual course material. Tests are heavily influenced by the textbook not the lectures at all. But attending the lectures gives you some fun stories and thought-provoking ideas. He really cares about his students
Sam is the best professor I have met so far. He is inspiring and very humor. He cares about every single one of us and as long as you put in the effort with group project and study the textbook, you will get a really good grade
Best professor of bus200. He teaches so well and always there to help you. Ready to take him again. you will get a lot of inspiration from him.
Sam is really nice and smart. Although I am not his BUS200 student this semester, each of my friend told me that he is caring and glad to answer your questions. Luckily I attended his review class and I found his classcture really interesting. In my eyes Sam and Alia are both the best BUS200 instructors. Look forward to learning BUS272 with you.
Amazing prof!! Would love to take another class with him. Amazing lectures, accessible outside class, inspirational. DO NOT SKIP CLASS or your missing on something very important that you will never be able to learn.
He was a very nice, good, caring professor I had seen in FIC. If u get a low grade, who will encourage you and gave u some suggestion and help u.
He is a very nice man and he work hard. The exam is on textbook more than lexture and I would like him to teach more about the exam because course is not really fair this way.
Genuinely cares for your success. I was a week and a half late for the start of school due to a summer trip back to Asia; I emailed him to see if there was anything I could do to stay caught up other than his online posted lectures. Sam literally sent me assignment briefs and paired me up with a presentation partner before hand. Amazing person. D
While the course content may not be too interesting for everyone, taking BUS 272 with Sam is worthwhile. He truly cares about his students and their future. His tests are fair and primarily based on the textbook. Presenatations are a bit more difficult in terms of grading but still very manageable. Highly recommend taking BUS 272 with Sam!
AMAZING INSTRUCTOR. IF YOU EVER PLAN TO TAKE BUS200 TAKE IT WITH HIM. YOU WOUNT EVER REGRET YOUR CHOICE.
I like Sam and he does try hard. Perhaps it is the content but much if the course seemed like common sense and not new for us. Maybe there was nothing Sam could do about it but I was frequently bored.
He really make learning fun. Most inspirational professor. Besides he is a great motivational force.
legend
Easiest course ever!
good professor
Sam is a really good and respectable teacher. He is extremely inspirational, he will talk to you about life advice as well. He is a good listener to his students and a wonderful teacher. However, if you take his course, study not only from his lectures but from the textbook as well and don't forget to elaborate more on your paper. Overall, the best
There is nothing wrong with Thiara's teaching style, but "awesome"? Not my word for him. I'd have no difficulty taking him again.
Sam does reasonably well with the low level material.
Honestly, LOVED his class. He is nice, kind, understanding and inspiring. I would love to take his class again.
The best professor i have ever seen in my life. He is a role model for me.
Sam tries very hard but the material he teaches is VERY introductory. I didn't feel I got full value for my time.
Great speaker and explains topics very well. Lectures are made engaging with personal stories and videos. He treats you like and equal and boosts ur desire to study. Interacts with all students in class everyday and creates a student-instructor bond. Answers any questions in class, even the dumb ones. However, u must read the book to pass his class
A really nice guy. I don't think he is teaching great but it isn't his fault.
Choosing Sam's class was the best choice of my 1st semester.
He can surely communicate but honestly not that good of a prof. The course itself was too basic and Sam did not really add to it. Comes off as way too naive and could do with talking less about himself. Wouldnt recommend the course or the prof unless you really need to
If you want to learn "Business'' and not just look to pass another course, I would highly advise you to take Sams, class. He is the nicest person, and if you just pay full attention and take notes during his lectures, you'll get higher than average grade. Look out for his inspirational ending speech, I won't spoil it don't worry. Good luck guys!!
Sam really isn't your stereotypical business prof. He's a fine lecturer, and an amazing mentor. His real strength is in motivating you and building character, not just your grades. He's willing to help you one on one, no matter the subject. He's someone you want to keep in touch with after you graduate.
The absolute best prof I've ever had. He care's about his students and really wants to get to know you. His lectures are interesting and engaging. His assignments are fair and he gives you fair warning about what the midterm and final will look like. He's fairly acessible and someone you want to remain in touch with even after the course ends.
While Sam is a good speaker and brought in some interesting guests, I didn't enjoy the class. The exams were memorizing the textbook and the group projects were harshly graded. OB can be confusing and I didn't feel that Sam really helped my understanding.
How do i start. Amazing prof yeah yeah but the course is on a different level of being boring. Sam expects you to memorize the whole book. LIKE EVERYTHING. Do you know how boring the material is.
Sam seems like he has good intentions, but this class is actually horrible. Everyone has different due dates for projects which is completely unfair as some students would have to hand things in and present 2 weeks before others. Also he expects you to memorize the entire textbook for exams to the smallest detail which he tests. Regret this class.
Nice guy, very inspirational . Lectures are interesting for the most part, but he's really passionate about what he's teaching and knows his stuff.
Tons of group work. 3 group micro assignments, 1 paired presentation, and 1 group presentation, weekly reading quizzes. Sam's lectures were engaging and fun, he likes to joke, and we all throw out answers and examples in the chat. You can tell hes an awesome person. Exams are open book and I would say theyre fair/you have to work for a good mark.
Sam is the best prof I've had so far. He made group work easy and the marks were very fair. He recorded his live lectures. The exam is open book and based off of application rather than memorization. As long as you do the work you will succeed. He was very understanding of the online situation. Totally recommend taking this class with him!
I hate his class . He provides so many assignments and presentations for a 200 level course . The course itself is so boring and he doesnt add any justice to make it easy for students. Marking for assignments and projects are rough and not fair because I had the worst TA .
Exams are graded pretty harshly but the class is curved so doesn't really matter. Overall, Sam is very knowledgeable and seems sincere. The workload can be a bit heavy near the end of the semester with the final case study, the two micro assignments, and the final so beware of time management!
He is a really good professor. Cares a lot for his students, calm and takes time to give feedback on how to improve. Only required to read the textbook briefly and make sure to pay attention to his lectures. Quizzes were relatively easy just make sure to listen to lecture and briefly read textbook. Exams were great! 24 hours. No cap, best prof!
The lectores are easy to understand and complements well with the book. The exams are very large but easy. The best from this course are the office hours. He is really friendly.
Sam is a real gem. I don't know what I did to deserve him. His lectures are really fun, he makes lots of jokes and don't give any extra homework other than quizzes. Above all, he doesn't expect us to memorize the book. Some said he do but that's not true. He wants us to understand and apply the concepts. I would love to take another class with him.
i learnt most stuff from the textbook but i still always attended lectures because i loved sam so much, he is such a good prof and will help you whenever you need
Sam is really kind and understanding. He is honestly one of the best Profs at FIC and SFU! He is always available to take questions and also appreciate them. His assignments aren't that hard if you're comfortable reflecting and giving your input to the questions he asks.
Sam is a really nice person, I took the ASYNC and 80% of the lecture was him talking about himself, got kinda tired of that after the 3rd class tbh. He's tough but fair with the grading, his projects are somehow interesting. Not bad, but not great.
Sam is the GOAT.
What the comment below just said!
Sam is a fantastic mentor figure. He is a storyteller, so you will stay focused as long as he speaks. He is 10/10 in everything. The course concepts are interesting. Highly recommend. He has the power to bring out the leader in you.
Sam has the power to bring out the leader in anyone. He is fantastic.
After 4 semesters, Sam is without a doubt the best prof I have had thus far. While the content of the course may not always be interesting, his way of lecturing always captures your attention. If you come early, he always tries to make conversation and will remember your name. Very inspiring prof. Beware of group assignments however.
Sam is one of the best profs I've ever had. The weekly quizzes and open book midterm were quite easy however your grade heavily depends on group assignments and projects. Your group members are the same all semester so pray you get a good group.
good prof except this course will make you so bored. I also don't like how long it takes for marks to be returned and being left not knowing what grade you are truly at throughout the sem. the group projects are a large portion of your grade, so if you get a bad group it would be extremely difficult especially with such a high grade curve.
If you want to actually learn HR, take this course with another prof. Everything was so disorganized, too many assignments and all useless. The lectures were BORING and repetitive. He talked too much about himself. For the presentation (20%), he even added more rubrics AFTER we submitted, and deducted a lot for rubrics that no one knew about.
Amazing person, very kind, fair grading, and fair exams. A few complaints was the high average can be dissapointing when grades are curved at the end and it took more than a month to get marks back for assignments.
amazing person and knowledgable, but lectures can be pretty boring, i stopped going after the first few weeks. ur grade is based on lots of group project, so if u get assigned with a bad group, it will be hard to get a good grade. u dont get most of ur marks back till end of semester, so u dont know ur true grade
Best semester so far thanks to him.. Super inspirational and help you to look beyond your current course and discover your true calling in life!
Sam is super inspirational and caring. If you need advise or motivation, come to him ;-) In terms of grading, I would say he is not an easy grader, but not a tough grader either. Just make sure you explain everything thoroughly, and try to find good examples for every question (even when he only asks for the definition).
Midterm and finals were pretty straight forward. Group and pair projects pretty much make or break your grade. Sam is a great lecturer and will go the extra mile to help you out.
Sam is a very good professor who is really passionate about the subjects he teaches, and really wants to help students reach their full potential. His exams are very fair, with no unexpected content and a focus on demonstrating understanding of the concepts in a real world scenario, not just focusing on writing down the exact definition.
Sam was very inspirational and was also quite passionate about teaching. The issue was that he wasn't too interested in the content he was teaching. He would often spend a fraction of the lecture teaching the content and the rest talking things to inspire the class. You can do well without going to lectures just make sure to read the textbook.
Really great prof. Class was enjoyable. Hope to take him again.
His lectures are inspiring but lecture notes are lacking. You need the textbook to make sense of things
He is a great professor: really cares for all his students, has so many amazing stories to share. As long as you memorize his slides, it's very easy to get full marks on midterms and finals. Get ready for a lot of assignments: that's where I feel I lost some marks. I definitely recommend taking a class with him. Best prof so far!
RUN!!!!!! Choose another prof instead of him please!
