Cass' exams are very challenging, overall the lectures are not. This makes studying essential to do well on the exams. In lectures she strives to make the content clear to the class and constantly askes if everyone understands the ideas.
Great professor, made chemistry easy. Exams can be difficult, so study hard. Textbook is never specifically used, although it has answers to some of the online problems, so see if you can borrow a friend's book. Come to class: she takes attendance with the CPS clickers, but she will be able to recognize your face and know that you aren't there.
Great professor, easy to understand.
Very VERY hard class, but she is great in her office hours. For being her first year she wasn't that great, but in 3 yrs she'll be a great teacher. She enjoys teaching and is in a good mood most of the times, but some kids tried to take advantage of her by talking alot. She was good but nothing Great
Exams are very straightforward, exactly what you'd expect. The homework helps you understand concepts. If you attend class, you'll do fine.
Not an easy class, but Dr. Cass is a good lecturer and offers lots of help outside of class.
I've had her for two semesters for LB171 and LB172 and she has been consistent throughout. She knows her stuff and is passionate about what she does. Going into her office hours the first time I was thrown off because she was yelling as she was explaining something to me, but I soon realized she wasn't mad, she likes chemistry.
Dr. Cass was one of the best professors I have had here at State. She was a great lecturer and really cared about her students. If you didn't understand something, she was really good at making sure you eventually did and offered a lot of outside help. Definitely my favorite professor so far. I had LaDuca as well and liked Cass a lot more.
Dr. Cass is a GREAT prof. She is always willing to help her students and is eager to answer all of your questions. You WILL have to put a lot of time into this class, but its well worth it. She is awesome and as long as you study and ask for help when you need it, you will do fine. I do warn you however, this class is not easy.
Cass was very passionate about chemistry and was very straightforward. She was very helpful in office hours. Knows how to joke around. Decent amount of clicker questions. The book wasn't really necessary but definitely helped as reference. Tests were exactly like the mock-exam review.
Dr. Cass was a really good professor in that she knew what she was talking about and she seemed to care about student learning. The class LB171 though will probably be one of the hardest classes you take, you really have to work for a good grade. Overall, she's the best chem prof you could ask for though!
If you're struggling with writing notes or understanding fundamental chemistry, Dr. Cass is the instructor that you want to have. She writes EVERYTHING essential up on the board, takes time during class to answer all questions, and always is there to schedule an individual meeting after office hours. She is awesome and I would recommend her!
Chem is just a hard class. Everyone likes LaDuca, but I prefer Cass. Although L has a fun lecture, sometimes he is hard to understand. Cass writes everything on the board for notes (you need to be there for them) and uses visuals when you need them. Answers questions during class and has regular office hours. Not above and beyond but pretty good.
She is the best of the lb171 teachers. She is very helpful, cares about her students, and funny. Don't buy the text book or share with a friend, I never opened mine.
If you read before coming to class the lectures will be easier to understand, but Cass lectures very well also. Pay attention and take notes because it will be extremely helpful to study them for tests.
LB171 IS A TOUGH COURSE, BUT CASS IS A REALLY GOOD PROFESSOR AND LIGHTENS THE MOOD. YOU WILL STILL HAVE TO PUT IN EFFORT AND STUDY BUT THANKS TO CASS YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING CLEARLY.
Dr. Cass is definitely the best prof of the LB171 lecturers. She is very clear in her explanation and it is very apparent that she cares for her students. This class is really difficult, but if you go to her for help she will be there for you. She does her best to make chem interesting and easy to follow.
Dr. Cass is one of the best professors at LB. She is very clear and will explain topics to the best of her ability. Highly recommend office hours, even if you're not struggling. The class is difficult but she has a genuine interest that her students do well. Highly recommend her.
Dr Cass is absolutely amazing!! As everyone has stated, this class definitely makes you work for the grade. The material is tough, the class moves at a fast pace, don't compare this to the typically CEM 141 class-- we cover more material than them. Dr Cass is very approachable, is always open to offer help, and her lectures are straight forward!
Dr. Cass is the best teacher I have ever had in my life. She is very kind and will be willing to help you as much as she can. She has a Motherly approach and truly wants you to succeed. The class itself is very difficult. Be sure to do your work and practice practice practice.
Dr. Cass is the best professor of the Lyman Briggs chem profs. She is so nice and willing to help you if you reach out to her. The class isn't easy, but I found her exams fair and she never tries to trick you on purpose. I would definitely take Dr. Cass again and I wish I had her for chem 2!!! If you can take her, I would recommend it !!
Go to office hours. They help so much. Study. Study. Study.
I recommend you dont take her ever!!!! N She expects you to understand conceptual knowledge of a topic on her level and yet never goes over any conceptual concepts. Toughest grader and tests, and your whole grade really depends on them. If you expect to get a 4.0 towards med school take a general chemistry class. Taking this class is a mistake.
IF U TAKE LB171 U WANT TO TAKE IT WITH CASS.
Dr. Cass is the BEST prof anyone could ask for! She is always willing to help clear anything up and is always looking for student success. Chem is definitely a super difficult class but she makes it well worth it. She also makes it very clear what you're doing wrong through feedback! If you ever get the chance to take Cass DO IT!!!!!!
Cass is a good professor and her exams are well organized compared to Barnards. Cass tries her best to explain concepts, but it is her personality that annoyed me. In my opinion, she's annoying and too loud.
Dr. Cass really has a passion for chemistry. LB171 is a tough course, no doubt, but if you want to have a professor that will go in depth about the concepts this is your prof. She does a nice job of connecting everything together and always asks if we have any questions after finishing explaining a topic. Her online office hours are also helpful.
Dr. Cass is a great professor. You need to attend office hours and thoroughly comprehend the material to succeed in this class. Missing one class is very tough. Dr. Cass is always willing to answer your questions and truly wants you to do the best you possibly can. Put in the effort, you get results.
LB 171 is a difficult class as it is. Dr. Cass makes chemistry interesting, and she cares about the subject. She requires lots of work but getting a good grade is very possible. I wish she taught LB 172 when I was there!
Cass is difficult to understand at times, so going to office hours and every recitation is super important to understand content. Chem 2 was by far, way more difficult than chem 1, so be prepared for that. Cass also hand writes all her notes on the board so if you don't write super fast, chances are you'll miss content & it won't be covered again
I don't even have Dr. Cass, but I watch her lecture videos instead of my own professor's lectures. She is very informative and straight forward. She can make complex units seem simple and easy to understand. She is also a very nice person and seems to really care for her students.
Chemistry was pretty hard for me but Dr. Cass is great at explaining concepts. Don't be afraid to go to office hours for help and make sure to do any practice work assigned.
Almost every single class was put into breakout room groups to work on new concepts with little explanation of the concepts themselves. A nice professor but I definitely wish we had more time as a class to go over things and ask questions instead of having to wait with a raised hand.
Cass was a great professor, she is extremely thorough in lectures and great a giving test prep materials.
Really good professor-lectures were easy to follow and she was really good at preparing students for the quiz. Really easy to contact her as well outside of class as well for any concerns or issues.
Dr. Cass is a great professor. The class was fully online and she did really well. Her practice tests and office hours are super helpful and she gives really good feedback. She is also very good at making sure everyone's questions get answered and will spend extra time going over the hard stuff in lecture.
Dr. Cass is a great choice for LB172 or LB171. Be prepared, LB172 is harder than 171, but Dr. Cass makes the Cass VERY manageable. Her exams are not cakewalks and you need to have a good idea about what you are doing. There is not really that much homework for her LB172 class, I would HIGHLY recommend taking notes for pre-classes 1 week early.
Dr. Cass is a great professor! LB 172 is definitely a challenging course. If you don't put the work in, you won't do well. However, Dr. Cass truly cares about her students' success. She is always willing to answer questions and do everything possible to ensure you succeed. Like I said though, you have to be willing to work hard to do well in class!
Homework is always way harder than what we learn in lecture; also, Dr. Cass does not have good communication with the lab prof for the lab portion of class. Nice teacher though.
Dr. Cass is a great professor. I struggled quite a bit with some of the topics, but she explains them well, and posts all of the slides and notes used in class. My only complaints are her office hours are crowded, so don't expect much individual help through them. Also, her online quiz windows were weird (8amFriday-5pmSaturday), but not horrible.
Cass is super understanding and flexible. She's one of the most understanding professors I've had and deserves so much! She is a great professor and made chemistry so much easier.
Cass is pretty strict, and the class is super group heavy, so you work with your group a lot on practice problems; at these times I would prefer more lecture so the concepts can be clear. If your group is bad, you're going to be relying on yourself. I would say Cass is your best bet in how she teaches, but just don't annoy her. Content is hard.
Dr. Cass is phenomenal. Lectures are very helpful and grading is straight forward
She is such a good explainer and is willing to re-explain things during lectures. She is very approachable and would always make sure the material is understood.
Cass is fine. I felt she wasn't as straightforward as I'd like. When I took the course FS2020 lecture time was mainly group work which wasn't super helpful but that changed halfway. Her lectures are fine but she takes her time getting to the point. Fair grader and fair quizzes though. Mock quizzes are the best prep.
Cass is a pretty good teacher for LB 171. She does lecture a lot and there is a lot of content to learn but she is very clear when she lectures and offers plenty of resources to help her students. She is very good at explaining things in a way that her students will understand.
I absolutely loved Dr. Cass and would definitely recommend her. She is very easy to talk to and does an excellent job of answering questions. The class was also very organized and her lectures are interesting and easy to follow. LB 171 is a challenging course, but she does such a good job of helping students actually understand the material.
She is a very sweet teacher and answers questions but is also really loud during lecture. She also is very messy when teaching, is confusing, and does not really teach well. Her lecture seemed all over the place this year with a lot of low averages for quizzes because lectures were not clear. Be prepared to spend hours studying outside of class.
Dr. Cass is a very kind professor. Lecture was beneficial, but you should expect to study outside of class. Although there are lots of quizzes, expect them to be difficult. Office hours are also helpful. Overall she is a great prof but the class is hard in general so expect to put in some work.
Doctor Cass is truly wonderful! She cares about her students, and she is always responsive and engages the class well. Content is definitely difficult, but Dr. Cass teaches in a way that everyone can understand. I had her for LB171 and LB172, and she was my favorite professor of both semesters! Take Chem with her!!
Dr. Cass is the best chemistry professor at Lyman Briggs. Her quizzes are comparatively easy with most questions from mock quiz. She is a good explainer and is willing to re-explain things during office hours. She is very approachable and would always make sure the material is understood. I will definitely recommend her.
Cass is a really nice professor, but a little overrated. Pay attention to the lectures and the preclass materials and you should be fine. Quizzes were very fair. She definitely cares about her students and is easy to approach.
DO THE PRECLASSES. Cass is great at explaining things, class is split half lecture half group work. this year we had quizzes every other friday, where we took a 40 min individual quiz and a 20 min group quiz, so hope for a good group. go to recitations, the LA's answer your questions and you get free points.
Definitely a great professor as her explanations were clear. The work is challenging but La's and the prof are always there to help.
-Exams are more difficult than what is on the mock exam/most of the lecture slides and practice problems. -There are concepts/problems that students weren't taught ot made aware of until the mock exam came out. -Mostly self study
Super personable and helpful
I came into Cass's class hearing that she did an incredible job, and although she is a decent teacher, her exams are unfathomably difficult. Other professors have exams that have been deemed easier and more fair, but Dr. Cass is a difficult grader and her exams do not help. I have never been more frustrated with a class in my life.
She is very loud during lecture, and is very test heavy. She claims in class that a 70 average is good on exams. She also admitted that she purposely makes her exams more difficult. She goes over the mock quiz the day before the exam and got upset when another professor went over the mock days before the exam. She expects you to know the material.
DO NOT take Cass. Her Rate my prof reviews are old, class is much harder. She goes over the material very fast and is extremely test heavy. Her tests are very hard, and she admitted that she makes her test really difficult. She wastes 2/3 of the class with useless Jam-boards. Be prepared to put in 10+ hrs of work outside of class each week.
Cass is such an amazing professor. She truly cares that you learn and are able to apply the knowledge you learn. Although she is a great professor, her exams are honors exams so they are much more difficult than the other teachers.
Prepare to learn all of the material by yourself
I came into this class already taken a year of honors chem and AP chem in high school, and struggled in this class. Her test are much harder than any of the other teachers that teach this class, and she thinks that a 70 is "good" on tests. If you do not have a GREAT understanding of chem from high school, DO NOT take this class.
Cass is a great teacher with an amazing personality that keeps everyone engaged throughout her lectures. The tests are difficult, but all the material is covered in class/mock exam. You also get a drop exam which can include the final! If you attend office hours and put in the effort, you will get a good grade.
Professor Cass's class was the highlight of the week! Her teaching style and ability to engage students in class made learning easy. Her willingness to help students in and outside of class is amazing. The exams will require many hours of studying, but mastery of the material is definitely possible if you pay attention in class and ask for help.
Avoid if at all possible. Exams were extremely difficult. Many out of class activities were much harder than they had to be because of a lack of explanation. Cass could sometimes be quite rude with students. If you're not a chemistry or bio major, check with a Briggs advisor about taking CEM chem rather than Briggs chem; it's likely much easier.
The only way to 4.0 this class is to put in a lot of work outside of lecture each day. The exams were difficult, and not similar to the mock exams. To prepare for exams, rewatch her lecture videos! She does drop two exams (1 individual and 1 group exam) and offers 15 points extra credit if you do all pre classes, and attend all recitation.
Dr. Cass is a strong lecturer which is reflected by her hard exams. Exams are a good part of your grade, and deeply understanding concepts is crucial (1 exam and 1 group drop, including final exam). Extra credit awarded if you do all pre-classes and recitations. Studying after class is a must, she goes quickly. A 4.0 is achievable with good effort.
A really good and easy to follow teacher. You can tell she is passionate on the topics and making sure her students succeed. Attendance isn't required but I heavily recommend going to all as the topics can be hard and you can fall behind easily. Exams can be pretty hard so expect a decent amount of studying.
If you do not have a good foundation in chemistry, you will most likely have a harder time since the basics are taught through short preclass assignments and she goes over harder material in lecture. Go to office hours, she goes a lot slower there. Expect hard exams. Grading is fair and you can earn many points to make up for bad exams.
Cass is awesome but her tests are so hard. Ive heard a lot of people saying that it makes later chem courses super easy but not sure if it is worth it yet...
Dr. Cass is awesome!! Pre-class activities are where a bulk of learning happens, so those can be a little tough, but she always goes over the material in class and gives us plenty of practice. The tests can be hard, but I would say she prepares us well for them. She is one of the best profs I have ever had.
pre class activities are not good and dont help with learning. youre expected to know the content when you get to lecture. spend 70% of lecture doing group jam board problems that aren't helpful. extremely hard exams nothing like the practice ones from class.
She was nice but if you need ANY test accommodations, tell her way ahead of time. I had to take a group exam on my own due to a doctors appointment(even with a VISA, I couldn't get the exam taken a different time.) Lots of extra credit. She's very approachable with questions and isn't judge-y at all.
She is a good professor when it comes to teaching, however you need to pay attention because she moves fast. Exams are really difficult, so be ready to study a lot. I would study 15 hours per exam and get 70s. Try to pay attention and ask questions if you need help.
She makes you watch youtube videos for the pre-class and that is how she teaches. There is useless workshops that are REQUIRED and a total waste of time. The entire lecture time is doing jamboards with your group. This class is the reason I am dropping out from Lyman Briggs. Don't even think about asking a question because she is passive aggressive
LB171 was way too difficult for an INTRODUCTORY chemistry class IMO. Exams are harder than in class work and pre-class videos are useless. If you're up for a challenge or love chem, take this Prof's LB171. If not, take gen chem. It ultimately still counts for credit in Lyman Briggs - even if your advisor tries to imply otherwise.
Doctor Cass is a great professor for chemistry. She is someone that is great at teaching Chemistry at lyman briggs. She is the best one by far. The class is very challenging however, you need to put in the work in and study a lot to do great in her class.
She was a great lecturer. Explained things very well and by far gave the best education for LB chem. Exams are SO tough tho. So fast paced and tricky. But overall a really quality job teaching and provides more opportunities to practice than many other profs. Take her if you want the best foundation for all other chem classes. Great person overall
Dr. Cass is one of the best chem professors at LB. She posted lectures and had available zoom office hours in D2L. She deeply cared about the students and often stayed after class to elaborate on lectures. Chemistry is hard enough so ofc this class won't be so easy. Mock exams aren't really similar to real exams, so study with other resources.
Best professor for gen chem. Students from other professors would skip class to come listen to hers because she taught so well. Super funny professor and is very understanding and reasonable. The tests however are very hard, you just have to find a study strategy that works best for you.
Best teacher for Chem 1. Lectures were extremely helpful to explain the concepts in the preclass activities. Very friendly and easily reachable for questions and help over email and during office hours. Difficult tests but retake opportunities during finals week made them easier. ULA office hours made concepts easier to understand.
I highly enjoyed Dr. Cass. She is a great lecturer and gives lots of time during class to work with groups on practice problems so you know what you're doing. If you do all of the free points, it is very realistic to 4.0 this class. Also, there is no final and you can retake other exams. I highly recommend her, definitely the best LB 171 professor.
Dr. Cass is an amazing professor. She makes herself available for help often. Her syllabus and expectations are very clear and easy to follow. It can be a lot of work, but it is well worth it. No busy work that made me think "Why am I doing this?". Aside from being an amazing professor, she is just a very kind and funny person.
Dr. Cass was one of the best teachers I have ever had. Even though during the middle of the semester I had around a 83%, I had brought it up to a 4.0 by the end because of much she helped. Her lectures are so helpful and the preclass is helpful at times. If you had to pick a teacher for gen chem, pick her. I took her again for chem 2.
Dr. Cass is a very strong lecturer and she explains things conceptually. This is reflected in her exams which tend to be very concept heavy. Overall, she is a great professor to take chemistry from. Definitely recommend for LB 171 and LB 172.
One of the best professors I have ever had. Really cares about student wellbeing and teaches content with passion. Totally recommend!
This was one of my favorite professors!
Dr. Cass is an excellent professor! Course is really team-based heavy, so pray that you have a good team for the team project and team exams. Make sure to attend her office hours because they offer amazing tips and insights for exams. If you took AP chemistry, this course will be a breeze for you. Those who didn't, ask a lot of questions.
Dr. Cass is a great prof but the class is very team based so that could make or break your experience
Dr. Cass was great! She really tries to help all of her students succeed and makes it possible to do so. The final exam gives you a chance to retake up to three previous exams which is very helpful as well. She does a great job of explaining content in lectures, and will take time to meet with you outside of class if you need extra help.
Dr. Cass is a good lecturer; I would advise to go to class even though she posts videos, because you will work with your group. You will have individual exams as well as a group exams. Exams are very comprehensive and math heavy but I felt prepared most times. The pre-class activities are worth actually attempting and not skipping over.
Overly demanding requires you to spend 6 hours with peer mentors over the semester, which makes sense until it gets messed up and you have to do double the work. I do not recommend it it.
I would consider her a good professor, but she is very test heavy and homework heavy, and does not really cover what is on the homework in class. The most inconvenient thing about her is that she is a harsh grader, and makes you meet for 6 hours with the ULAs who are rarely available.
Dr. Cass is a great professor. She definitely knows what she's doing. It's best to go to lectures because you have a group, but she posts annotated slides and lecture videos. Recitation points are attendance-based and groupwork. The class is test-heavy, but instead of a final you can retake up to three individual exams, but not group exams.
Dr. Cass definitely knows what she's teaching. Very approachable and transparent about expectations. No final- you can retake up to 3 individual exams- that being said you do have to take team exams which cannot be retaken. Recitations are mandatory. If you cannot make it to class she has annotated slides and lecture recordings. Would take again.
I loved Dr. Cass's teaching style she genuinely cares about whether her students understand the material or not and is often available for office hours. She provides lots of content for exam preparation and allows for exam retakes at the end of the semester to attempt to improve your grade.
Dr. Cass definitely knows what she is talking about. She is amazing at answering questions and explaining in a way that is understandable. Her exams can be difficult and very comprehensive, all written/no multiple choice. If you study hard and go to class you will be successful. Would take her again.
She is a hard grader and tests are tough, but don't be scared! She is AMAZING. You will not be confused and if you are, she is extremely accessible and will do everything to help. Homework is pretty light (there's not a lot; it's mostly completion grades) and it's never just busy work. Every time I thought I wasn't going to be prepared, I was wrong
This woman made me rethink if I am worthy of an education. She acted so biased towards the men in my class and I truly had no problem with it until she used my womanhood to undermine not only me but also my education. I never expected this from a university professor, nonetheless a woman in this day and age. Frankly disappointed and flabbergasted.
Although Dr. Cass wasn't the right professor for me, she did everything she could to help the people in class that needed it. She always recorded her lectures and posted them. The exams were heavy, but Dr. Cass always had plenty of prep material posted so you could prepare as much as you needed
Dr. Cass is a great professor who really cares about her students. The course is team-based, so your experience depends a lot on your group. Take advantage of her office hours - they're super helpful. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep.
She is a hard grader on exams, and even though she says that it's based on the work you do, not the answer, she's most definitely lying. I've lost a ton of points because I got a first question wrong, and the subsequent questions were based on it so I got zeros for those, even with the right process. You can do it, but good luck.
Even though the content may be hard, 3.5/4.0 is easily attainable if you put the work in. I will forever preach Dr. Cass's name--she is the best prof in all of Briggs. Take her for any class possible. Her lectures are engaging, she teaches you well, and she is an amazing person. No hesitation, choose this prof.
Dr. Cass is the best professor at Lyman Briggs. She truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Her lectures are actually helpful and her teaching style is top tier. Highly recommend.
Don't get me wrong, Cass is not a bad professor at all. She has years of experience in chemistry, however exams can be something else. If you haven't taken AP Chemistry in high school , I would try to take CEM 141/142, which is the natsci sequence. Taking LB chem it is implied that you have a very good understanding of chemistry from high school.
I had LB 171 with her as well and I don't know what changed but class genuinely class began to feel hostile, I know she had personal issues but I do not believe that is grounds for yelling at a class who got low grades (consistently low grades is a teaching problem not a learning problem). Take LaDuca if you can (he guest lectured a few times).
Exam heavy, lectures are mandatory. Some of the exams were super tough and included material that was briefly covered. There are far easier professors in the Briggs program that offer tons of extra credit and aren't nearly as exam heavy. If you aren't a good test taker don't take this course!
The exams this semester were insanely difficult and always had questions we never saw in class or on the mock exam. But there were retake opportunities to bring your grade up which I really appreciated. Got mad at class when everyone did bad on a question instead of realizing that the reason we did bad was because we never saw a question like that.
Dr. Cass really wants her students to succeed and if you put in the work, you will be able to 4.0. Exams can be hard but there is enough extra points with HW and other assignments to cushion your grade. She has really good lectures and explains things well! Very helpful outside of class as well.
I had Dr. Cass for both chem 2 and my senior seminar, and she is such a warm and caring professor. Her grading criteria is very clear and she is willing to make exceptions when necessary. She encourages thoughtful conversation and engagement with course content and going to her class was always pleasant.
I had her class when jamboard was used. Course was flip model, so we worked on materials during class and learned the stuff at home. It was lots of team involvement so pray you have a good team. Most of her exams was very hard since she was picky with the answers. She is seriously one of the harder prof for first years taking intro to chem.
