Great professor.
Just show up to class and write down what she puts on the board. VERY EASY CLASS.
Online class is great!
very awesome and interesting class! very hard to fall asleep!
Dr. Hens is a fantastic professor. She is really passionate about her field and I found her lectures interesting and fun. Take good class notes and you'll be prepared for exams.

this is a great class and the professor is just great. i look forward to her classes!
loved this class, shes a great teacher, very interesting lectures, shes funny- tests are easy as long as you take the notes she gives you
It's very rare for a class to be both easy and educational at the same time, but Hens' class is an exception. I learned a ton of info and the class is interesting as well. She's an exceptional instructor and you never hear a bad thing said about her amongst students.
My favorite teacher this semester! She's smart and funny. Her class was a pleasure to take. I learned so much from her lectures and the class is quite easy.
Anthro 1 is a very awesome class! Prof Hens is very good at explaining her material and the material is interesting... Online class so open note open book on tests and quizzes altho they are timed... Take her!
LOVED HER!! i watched on the online feeds and didn't actually ever have to go to class, which is nice. She's really funny, likes her field, and has power point lectures so she stays on track and doesn't go on weird tangents ever (which is a plus!). Also, she did an interview for me over email this semester. I definitely recommend her, she's great!
watched the entire semester from my bedroom on my computer through video streaming and the tests and quizzes are all online and that means open note and open book... easy class and she makes it interesting too!
Easy class. 11 quizes I believe, 2 midterms & 1 final(not cummulative!) Everything's on webCT. Don't bother buying the book, which costs $100.00!! Just buy the article book for the quizes. Just study the notes, read the articles for the quizes and her videos and you'll pass! Do the extra credit! Easy and can greatly help if you're in need.
All teachers need to be like Hens. She presents entirely from ppt but it isn't boring at all. She presents it clearly and keeps it interesting. I took her class online and she was fast in responding to e-mails. Exams and quizzes are straight-forward and obviously open note/book. One writing assignment at the end of the semester. Definitely take her
Online class was great! It actually led me to change my major to anthropology. Not only does she keep class interesting, but she is extremeley helpful, both as a professor and an advisor so if you need any help at all, SEE HER!
Hens is a great professor!! Most of my professors have been difficult to understand, but Hens is straight-forward and never goes off tangent. She is funny, and totally easy to understand. I feel completely comfortable with her! Great notes on the PPT, but she goes through them pretty quick, so if you watch online you can pause it which is nice!
I TOOK HER ONLINE CLASS WHICH WAS REALLY EASY. THE WHOLE THING WAS ONLINE, EXAMS AND LECTURES. OVERALL SHE GIVES 4 EMANS ONE OF THEM A MAKE-UP BECAUSE SHE ONLY TAKES THE 3 HIGHEST. AND YOU ONLY HAVE TO DO A 1 PAGE PAPER AND AN EXTRA ONE FOR E.C. I DID NOT KEEP UP WITH THE LECTURES UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. JUST BY DOING THAT I GOT A HIGH C.
Apparently I'm in the minority here. Class taken was basic ANTH for req' purposes. The whole class has been a reminder that I am a monkee/ape/chimp. Not just week one, but every lecture thereafter. I was at fault for not reading the syllabus thoroughly, and now I am going to limp to the finish line. Seriously, there are monkees on every ppt slide.
Would definitly take her again! The online class was great and she was clear in her expectations and lectures. 3 tests open book, 1 extra credit assignment.
Easy class... copy the slides and you'll ace her exams again as with the lab practically impossible to fail..
Hens is extremely knowledgeable and a great lecturer. The way her course is structured, however, is ridiculous. If she's going to give us the freedom to choose which articles we are going to read and summarize, we shouldn't be quizzed on ALL of them, too. I'm not going to read all the articles for a pathetic 4 points when I could read a few for 10.
She lectures with PowerPoint, slides are very clear & she explains each of the points with awesome examples. Totally recommend professor. 4 exams, drops 1 that is the lowest. Exams are all multiple choice, open book, but timed. :)
She teaches very well and it's understanding but her exams are bunch load of studying. There was only 2 exams (midterm & final), one easy quiz, & 8 lab activities (she drops one lowest grade). This was a fun class but she puts all her lecture into ONE big exam. If you fail on one then you're pretty much screwed.
Her lectures are crystal clear, answers ALL questions and in general is a very nice person. Took this as a summer class & it was just too much info and tons of different topics at once. Midterm, final, a paper & six articles to read & summarize in a single page. I struggled terribly as to how/what to study for the tests until she gave an overview.
Really easy class. 4 Exams, drops the lowest 1 and gives you 1:30 for 60 questions. Plenty of time to casually look through your notes or even google search the answers for an easy A. One 2 page paper for 10% of your grade. If you were satisfied with your first 3 exams then you could skip the last exam and be done with the entire class weeks early.
Best Prof I've had at SacState. Very organized, no surprises on exams, very fair, easy to talk to. Great personality, will make you laugh on lectures. Hard worker, never misses class, except for conferences. AAA++ rating!
Although attendance is not required it is recommended you show up every class and write down all her notes. 4 tests, takes highest grades and drops lowest plus one writing assignment which is cake! Super easy class, all you have to do is show up and take notes and you'll pass.
Took the online class and it was really easy just exams and a paper for this class. The lectures were pretty interesting and the professor is really nice. Everything was open book and notes obviously so for sure you can get an a
just took the class over the summer, great class, very clear instructor. we had 3 tests, two labs (easy!) one extra credit lab, one page extra credit paper, and one page final project. best professor i've had at sac state. she doesnt post her ppts so you have to take notes. the study guides for tests tell you EXACTLY what's going to be on the test.
Cool class, but she hit her microphone a lot and it takes away from her online lecture and it can get annoying hearing the static noise.
Her picture on the corner of the online video is not necessary. It takes away from her power point slides.
Honestly, if we wanted to see the teacher on the online video we would attend the class, instead of taking it online. PLEASE REMOVE YOUR VIDEO ON THE CORNER!!! Thank you,
This class was enjoyable and I was very interested in the topic presented although I only took it for units purposes. Shes very clear, very very clear, if you don't understand her, you need special help. 4 online exams and drops your lowest, that means you don't have to take the cummulative final if you did well on the first 3!
Teaches exactly what you will be tested on. Take thorough notes and revisit the areas in the book that cover the topics that she spends most time on in lecture and the exams will have no surprises. I LIKE THE VIDEO IN THE CORNER OF THE INSTRUCTOR! Hand gestures and miming often helped me gain better understanding of the material!
Professor is super smart and her lectures are great! Attend all her lectures because they aren't online and the exams are all on her lectures in class. All exams online and she drops your lowest test score at the end of semester. One writing assignment that's super easy and that's it! Very easy so take this professor because you learn a lot!
Easy online Summer course that I have taken! Didn't need the book. 4 tests altogether but drops the lowest one out of all. 1 writing assignment that can change your grade if you decide not to do it. Had a low "B" but lowered my grade to a C+ because I forgot one detail. Overall wonderful professor and great class to take! :)
I took Professor Hens for Human Osteology. She was one of the best professors I've ever had, hands down. She clearly defines all of her expectations, tells you EXACTLY what you will be tested on, and is eager to help. Exams are challenging, but that's the nature of osteology. Attend every class and write down EVERYTHING she says.
Scores are based off 3 exams and 1 paper. The final is optional (there's 4 exams, but she drops the lowest score). I recommend typing up your notes because it'll help you search for answers quicker during the exam. You don't need the book. She assigns articles that you might want to read for the exams. Overall, easy class.
I loooooove her class! Excellent teacher. She's passionate about anthropology and will let it show. The final is optional if you do well on the other tests. If you show up and pay attention, you'll do fine!
Excellent teacher! Show up to class and take notes and you will pass! All the tests are online and if you like your grade before the final, then it's optional. Only 1 paper. She explains the material very well. Highly recommend!
Simply excellent professor
Dr. Hens is one of my favorite teachers. Her class is so interesting and she gives amazing lectures. She's very clear with what she expects. There are three exams on three sections and a final exam that is cumulative and also optional. There is one paper.
Prof. Hens is a great professor. Very helpful and clear. I found it much helpful not to attend class and watch lectures online instead since she can sometimes talk fast. This class was not an easy A but very possible.
Dr. Hens is amazing at her job. Attend class, write notes and COME TO OPEN LAB if you want to pass this class. It's totally hands on and if you're not there to study the bones, you are gonna get a big fat F. If you're stuck/ confused, she will help you so don't hesitate to ask. She actually cares, unlike some professors!
Hands down one of the funniest teachers I have ever day!
Amazing professor! Lectures were clear, entertaining, and concise! Would recommend Professor Hens to anyone! Only 3 tests (with one optional final if you want to improve your grade) for the entire class. She drops your lowest grade too! Go to class, either in person or online, take notes, read the book, and you will pass with flying colors. 10/10
I have to say, though I'm not much of a science guy, her lessons are extremely exceptional. I feel like I learned a lot from her PowerPoints on the online video lectures I watched. It was a winter class, so it did go by very quickly.
Professor Hens was awesome! She made the class enjoyable and hands on. She provided quite a few extra credit opportunities to boost your grade if you needed to. The class wasn't that hard but you definitely need to try. You get an index card for tests. Highly recommend her!
She really cares about her students and does everything she can to help you out in and out of class. However, this is NOT an easy pass. You have to go to the open labs and study hard as this class is all memorization. She gives study guides for the lecture tests but when it comes to bone quizzes that all on you.
Professor Hens is great. Watch her lectures, TYPE the notes, and read the articles and you will pass with an A. The articles are LONG, but read them they are on the exams! 3 multiple choice exams and 1 extra credit quiz/final (optional). I never opened my book, so it's not needed. I only received a B+ b/c I didn't read the articles for Exam 2.
Dr. Hens is a great teacher. She really explains in depth the basics of biological Anth. Type the notes and watch the lecture. Read the articles. Articles and lecture videos can be lengthy but super easy class over all. Really opens your eyes about the extinction rates. Don't need the book. READ THE ARTICLES AND TYPE THE NOTES SERIOUSLY.
If you are looking to get a science requirement out of the way fast, then take this course with her online over the winter! Best advice is to type what shows up in her power points to a word doc/google doc. She also cares a lot about her students and I could tell through her emails as she would send reminders almost every day. Highly recommend!
Professor Hens is great. Whether it's online or in-person, her excitement shows. I would say 90% of the test material is all based on lectures, so show up or watch them (whichever platform you have her on). I didn't read the textbook the last half of the class and I passed the tests easily. Just do the study guide and it'll help. 3, 50Q exams total
Dr. Hens is very knowledgable in Forensic Anthropology and made the class very interesting despite it being online. There is one short paper, online labs that are like quizzes to help us prepare for our weekly exams. All exams are noncumulative. I highly recommend this upper division area B GE class for Criminal Justice students!
No textbook needed. Class is out of 300 points and is based on 3 exams that are worth 100 points each. Each exam has 50 questions and you have 75 minutes to complete them. She also provides an extra credit exam that is worth 20 points. BE SURE TO READ THE ARTICLES AND TAKE NOTES DURING THE LECTURE, THEY WILL BE ON THE EXAMS. Overall, great class!
Great professor for ANTH1! 6 exams (20 or so questions/40 minutes) and all are based on lectures and and some articles she posts. No surprise questions. Just watch the lectures, take notes of every slide, read the articles and it's an easy A.
Asynchronous. She's nice and very passionate on the topics. You are only graded by 6 exams. The 7th is extra credit. The questions are straight from the lectures. Take DETAILED notes if you want an A. Otherwise, just listening should get you a C or a B. There are some readings but you don't need to take that many notes. Just know the main points.
Easy class if you team up, hard class if you are by yourself. Overall, she is a great professor, very detailed lectures, and does her best to make sure you are ready for the exams. 6 exams total and 1 extra credit one, take advantage of that extra credit, push my grade to an A- to an A. Study really hard this class itself is not an easy subject.
Dr. Hens is an amazing professor! I have taken her classes in the past and Ill definetly take another one before I graduate! She posts interesting straight to the point lectures with occasional article summary essays and a quiz once a week. Shes very approachable and seems passionate about her craft!
Bro, take her. She's the coolest teacher, has a wonderful energy. Class is fun and interesting and very engaging.
As many other comments say, she is very invested in teaching her subject. Her lectures are very well put together and very interesting to listen to and watch. Her quizzes and exams take questions almost always from the information from the lectures but also from articles and videos she posts (which are generally not too long or boring).
Not only is Dr. Hens very straightforward with her directions, she can be hilarious and make class interesting and engaging. Very sophisticated professor. She has weekly quizzes that are based entirely on her lectures (make sure to watch them) along with three exams. Overall, my favorite class from this semester :)
Loved her! She is fantastic! TAKE HER CLASS YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
Professor Hens was great. There is one quiz every week based on the lectures, but they are super easy as long as you take good notes. Her lectures are very engaging, she is passionate about the subject. I would 10/10 recommend her class.
150&158 are the coolest classes I've taken at Sac State. If you're in to forensic anth / bioarch you should try to take these classes. (They're only offered every other year!) The memorization of everything about every bone can be stressful, but it's so worth it. By the end of 158 you really feel prepared for a grad program and career in the field.
Weekly quizzes of lectures but open notes. Easy class.
I LOVED THIS CLASS! I am not an anthropology major but Dr. Hens made this class interesting and enjoyable. I absolutely enjoyed her lectures and the homework was completely reasonable.
Weekly quizzes based on the lectures. Her class is pretty easy to get an A in, just stay on top of the quizzes.
Dr. Hens is a HOOT. Really charismatic professor with engaging lectures. The course content itself is very difficult (upper divison), but she does a great job at explaining it and making it relatable. Honestly such a funny woman. Highly, highly recommend if you are a biological anthropology major. She'll make you fall in love with the subject!
Completely unsympathetic. Has extremely outdated methods. Word vomits lectures, doesn't apply any assignments or HW to the lecture material so its difficult to digest dense scientific info when you have nothing to apply it to. It's pure memorization, no critical thinking. This isn't 1973, update your teaching method to reflect the current era.
Absolutely AMAZING. Easily the best professor in the anthro department. She is the funniest woman you'll ever meet and even as a CLS major, I adore her paleontology class. Very understanding and willing to talk with you after class for as long as you can stay. No doubt you'll love whatever course you have with her. Dr. Hens for the win!
Challenging, but not horrible. My only issue is that she boasts how she didn't teach osteo/skeletal analysis online because she says you can't learn about bones and skulls online w/ just photos -- then proceeds to put photos of skulls on tests and expects us to know everything about it 100%? Doesn't make any sense. I need to SEE the skull!
Super fun class. It's super easy if you pay attention to the lectures and take good notes. She is really funny and makes the boring parts entertaining. No need to read any of the assigned articles. Everything you need is from the lectures.
Good professor, straight to the point. doesn't give out PP, so write everything down or take pictures. quizzes are 100% based off of lectures, which is nice since she doesn't trick you. lecture is based on readings, so read if you want to understand it. interesting topic/articles. a few article summaries due every now and then. no xtra credit.
If you didn't take this class, you missed out. Dr. Hens' cool classes are only offered every other semester. I highly recommend taking this one, because it was super interesting. Challenging prof, but honestly you just need to put in a modicum of effort and you'll do well. Loved learning about pathology. Interesting but EASY BREEZY project. Take it
Professor Hens gave some of the most interesting lectures I have sat in on to date. The subject matter requires a little studying if you have never taken any class that deals with human anatomy, but even then it is not hard by any stretch. Hen's exams were fair, and all questions were clear. Labs related directly to what is on the exam. 10/10
I learned so much in the course, but for a 8 week course you should be ready to spend several hours every week on lectures and labs. The lectures are really interesting and Dr. Hens is very knowledgable about Forensic Anthropology. She grades all assignments quickly and gives feedback. She is an excellent professor.
you need to do one of two things to get an A in this course: read the textbook OR consistently show up to lecture. doing both is a guarantee of an A, in my opinion, but - if - you decide to do neither: you can get a B. details: 6 exams (mandatory), 6 short-writes (only do 4 out of the 6), and attendance is not mandatory. insanely easy, cool prof.
I really loved Dr. Hens's Bio Anthro class. She is so funny and really knows how to keep her students engaged in the lectures because she loves what she does. All of her exams are pretty easy and are based on the lectures or small readings she assigns. She doesn't assign papers so thats a big win for those who don't like writing. Would take again !
Dr. Hens was awesome. I took her for an 8 week course and i learned more than I thought I would. Her lectures were very interesting. Highly recommend her!
Just felt like I didn't really learn much. Very difficult class no matter how much you try feels like it's not enough.
Prof Hens is charismatic and passionate in her work & lectures. I looked foward to attending because of this. However, as you can see I barely passed the class despite having a high attendance. You have to do well on all exams, and get full points on the small assignments. Honestly, taking a class fully online may have been a better use of time.
I took this class over the winter but she wa very motivated and I actually enjoyed the lectures. The exams were from the lectures and the videos she posted.
