She never explains how to do anything in class, & she's unfair with grading. She will say she wants a "contextual analysis" & you write about the subject AND give your opinion, & you still receive a D on the paper. She's extremely opinionated & if you don't agree with her, she treats you as an insignifcant. I recommend a different professor.
had her last semester, totally agree with you, extremely liberal, in my opinion behaves immaturely in class and does not hesitate to defame a student, professor just doesn't have perspective when grading and should perhaps read a book on classroom etiquette, if you get her, switch out
I really had high hopes for this class, considering I was just declaring my English major. However, she was a bit ambiguous with what she expected in papers. Go far beyond what she assigns. Then, you'll be doing the bare minimum.
i really liked her class she was so funny and made the reading intresting she picked some of the better literature so that helped also. As far as writing papers for her class I did not have a hard time at all i made an A on one and B on the other and i am horrible at writing papers!! I would recommend her!!!
This lady is crazy/fun! She made shakespeare interesting, and she knows her stuff! During exams be sure to be precise on everything, remember she is a shakespeare fiend. Ask questions and seem interested and she will like you
I never like english in high school, so I was hesitant towards any class in the subject in college. However, she was an excellent teacher with loads of enthusiasm. The focus was on three main papers, with side assignments on the side. All in all this class doesn't take much effort, just read and do what she asks and you will be just fine!
If you keep up with your readings and participate in class this is a relatively easy A. However, she is a tough grader and the two exams contain a massive amount of writing. Not a bad class, but there are probably better ones out there. Take her if you enjoy Shakespeare...she has a great knowledge base.
Take this class if you're looking for something easy, and you like arguing over unimportant stuff. The class has a laid back atmosphere and is pretty easy. There are 2 big tests where you have to write a TON. I wouldn't recommend the class.
Honestly, only take this class if you have a deep, unwavering love of Shakespeare. This woman is obsessed with it. You will have to right alot for this class (3 main papers and exams that are pretty much all essay). Fun if you like Shakespeare, not if you don't.
Good class. Dr. Murphy knows her stuff on Shakespeare (as you should to teach a class on the guy). Course work wasn't too bad; the close reading assignments you have to do aren't hard, just annoying. Overall though, I'd definitely recommend the course and the professor.
If you're an English major looking to get rid of your Early Modern Lit requirement, I'd take a different teacher. She is really passionate about Shakespeare, but gets pissed when her students aren't as in to it as she is. She's a tough grader, but her final is easy.
She is fun and energetic in class. Her grading is however a little unpredictable. The best way to get a good grade seemed to be parroting facts about historical social contexts in papers around an argument. Don't get too outside the box basically. Her exams are tough, and the presentations are difficult as well.
I love Dr. Murphy!! I didn't come into the class loving Shakespeare at all, but because she's so enthusiatic, she makes you want to learn too. You have 3 assignments where you have to get 20 quotes from a play and then write 2-3 sentences abt each one, and three papers. Easy! And the exams are made up of 4 short answer essays. Love her!!!
Dr. Murphy can be entertaining, but I do not recommend taking her. Her requirements for papers are unclear and her grading is inconsistent. She will not read or comment your rough drafts. My writing suffered from taking her class.
I actually love this woman. I found her hilarious. But I will admit that her assignments were often confusing, and we didn't always know what exactly she was wanting us to write. Sometimes she would write that she loved my paper, other times she wrote that I missed the point of the assignment a bit, so who knows. Ask for help, she's very nice.
Her quirky personality and passion for Shakespeare keeps the class from getting bogged down in the text. I felt that her assignments were straightforward, but I know some of my classmates thought they were unclear. I asked for an extension on my final paper, and she willingly accepted without even asking for a valid reason. I'd recommend her.
she makes you write way too much for her exams. i wrote three pages front and back(total of six)for the mid term ang got a 76. also she is one of those teachers who takes her subject too seriously. not someone you want to take for a gen ed credit.
Love love love her!! She is extremely entertaining and the class discussions are extremely laid back and even fun at times! However, you cannot slack in this class. She is a tough grader and expects your best, but she is willing to help you! I'd reccomend her if you are planning to take Intro to Shakespeare!
She is extremely funny. I love her as a person, she always made me laugh. Her class can be difficult. As mentioned, paper assignments are not always clear; she is also a pretty tough grader in my opinion.
She is extremely funny. I love her as a person, she always made me laugh. Her class can be difficult. As mentioned, paper assignments are not always clear; she is also a pretty tough grader in my opinion.
Really funny and a fun teacher but also very blunt. She's a fair grader on papers. Expects a lot of reading (obviously)but walks you through everything in class. As long as you go to class and do the assignments you should be fine. Also, make sure to take notes because she tells you EXACTLY what will be on the exams. Word for word.
Dr. Murphy is quite possibly one of the funniest English teachers I've met. Her enthusiasm for Shakespeare is pretty evident upon first meeting and that aids in making discussion more laid-back and easy to digest. Her instructions are sometimes unclear, and she's a tough but fair grader. She's very helpful though. Overall, I'd recommend her.
Dr Murphy, as all will agree, is extremely entertaining and passionate about her subject. At one point she had as sing for Shakespeare's birthday. However, she is amazingly harsh during paper grading and I'm going to count myself lucky to scrape by this class with a C - after having put forward more effort than I did in all of my other classes.
I look forward to this class every MWF. Dr. Murphy is the reason I love Shakespeare, she brings such an enthusiasm to the material that you cannot help but be interested yourself. My only complaint is that her grading can be a little subjective, but don't let that discourage you from taking her. Excellent "teacher", not just a professor.
Take this class!! Dr. Murphy is a great professor. She is very entertaining. She is very helpful if you go to her office hours. The books that we went over in class were good.
You definitely have to adapt to her personality. She gets straight to the point and honest with you but that's actually a helpful thing in this course. She's extremely nice and helpful during her office hours when it comes to paper writing. I would recommend her to anyone interested in taking a comedy lit. class.
CONDESCENDING! If you ask a Q, BEWARE. She'll either say "excellent Q" or berate you. It's a toss up. We cringe in my class when anyone asks a Q & I fought tears myself once after asking for clarification on a paper. "I don't understand what is unclear to you!" When she asks if anyone has a Q tho & no one responds she gets mad so it's a lose-lose.
Probably one of the worst professors I have ever had. She is very condescending if you ask the wrong question, but I don't think she even realizes she is condescending. I really liked English until I took this class.
Dr. Murphy is rough around the edges but is a nice woman. You have to adapt to her or at least just smile and move on. She gives awful grammar quizzes but the assignments can be pretty easy if you try. If you go to office hours she tells you exactly what she wants. If you can find a better teacher take them, if not this is not the worst class ever.
Don't take this class with her. She makes it way more complicated and time-consuming than needed. She always gives 2-3 assignments a night. I tried my hardest and apparently it was never good enough. I ended up with a C+ even though some of my papers got 96's. She is very rude and tries to make you feel dumb.
She really knows her stuff when it comes to Shakespeare, and expects you to know it as well. She grades a little hard, and expects a lot from her students. Overall she is nice, but think twice about taking this class.
I thought Dr. Murphy was fantastic. She was enthusiastic and passionate about Shakespeare, and that made the class more interesting. If you attend class, she discusses the plays in so much detail that it isn't always necessary to actually read it. She assigns a fair amount of work, but it's reasonable and the directions are clear.
I love Dr. Murphy, and most people do too. The Intro to Shakespeare material was very interesting. She is an expert in the political and historical context of Shakespeare's plays. She's very funny. She's very nice. The writing amount is normal for an English class. I recommend taking Dr. Murphy and interacting with her during class.
I looooved this class. Prof. Murphy is super enthusiastic about Shakespeare, is open to new interpretations of the text, and was super helpful when I went to office hours for paper help. She was a little blunt, but nice.
Her upper level class didn't make it to capacity, so she took over a 102 class instead. If you disagree with her on something, she will say that you are wrong. She is rude and graded the class pretty hard for a 100 level class. Also she isn't good at asking questions, so she would get mad when people wouldn't answer.
Dr. Murphy is a very fair, but difficult professor. Most of your grade is in three papers spread through the semester. The texts we read were interesting and not boring. She can be a bit condescending at times, especially in her critiques of your writing. She grades very fairly and does not assign anything that she does not prepare you for.
Such a sweet, wonderful woman! For all the comments saying she is condescending, it's just kinda her voice. She enunciates very clearly and is Northern. She is very clear with directions and wants to see her students succeed. She loves chatting with her students before class, so feel free to ask her how her weekend was and stuff like that.
Overall I had a good experience with her when she taught my English 102. The only thing I struggled with is her grading. She graded rather tough for a 100 level course, but this was also a flipped classroom.
Dr. Murphy did grade harshly for a 100 level class; however, if you took the time to go to her office hours, what was expected was laid out for you in detail. Dr. Murphy sat with me countless times and went through entire papers with me and told me exactly what I needed to change. She truly cares about her students and the subject. LOVED HER.
Dr. Murphy is a tough professor, but she's worth it. The papers I wrote in her Shakespeare II course taught me quite a bit about writing academically! She remains available for communication and feedback even after I took her class a couple of years ago. She can be a little quirky, but if you take the time to know her, she can be very useful.
She's a really nice teacher who is willing to help you no matter what. She always answers her e-mail and is very understanding. You have to read the books assigned to the class according to the reading schedule on her syllabus and attendance is extremely important. Her honors English class isn't easy but if you work for it you can do really well.
Professor Murphy wasn't super likable or dislikable, she was just average as a person. She wasn't very clear on what she wanted on papers. She made it seem like she was, but then gave poor grades on papers. Can be funny at times but said the F word more than I would've liked her to, but thats a personal thing I guess.
She gave a lot of work for a 100-level, but I always brought the bigger projects to her office hours. She will read through your entire paper and tell you exactly what should change. I would only recommend her lower-level stuff to people with writing-heavy majors. As an English major, I'm glad I took her class and I think my writing has improved.
Dr. Murphy is the only professor that has actually made an English class entertaining! She is hilarious and very straightforward, which can sometimes come off as rude. Her class is challenging, but the homework helps a lot and I actually learned things, despite this being a composition class. You should definitely take Dr. Murphy!
Dr. Murphy is a really funny teacher. She made Shakespeare extremely modern, and she was very clear with her grading rubrics. I loved having her as a teacher!! She can come off as a little harsh, but she is overall very nice. I would 100% recommend her, but her class is definitely NOT an easy A. You have to do the readings and come to class.
She was amazing with explaining Shakespeare! She doesn't give a lot of homework, but the homework you are assigned is worth a lot of points so keep up with deadlines. Be prepared to read a lot, but she always goes over the readings in depth the next class period.
This class was the worst English class I have ever taken. Dr. Murphy is an extremely tough grader and is not helpful with papers. If you take this class, you need to have a good peer review group if you want to do well on the two essays that make up the majority of your grade. A lot of small assignments and readings. No clear grading criteria.
Prof. Murphy is an excellent English teacher and a good person in general. She obviously knows what she's doing and will help anyone who steps into her office. However, she is EXTREMELY tough when grading papers. I would especially recommend this teacher to those studying humanities and not to someone who hates writing English papers, like me.
THIS IS THE MOST HONEST REVIEW OF THIS HORRIBLE TEACHER. Samantha Murphy doesn't care about any of her students. She doesn't understand that we have to take other classes THAN JUST ENGLISH. I spent over 8 hours a week doing her homework to only receive grades below 75. Worst grader I've ever had. If you want a decent GPA, take ANYONE ELSE THAN HER.
I really enjoyed this class, and have her again this semester. Dr. Murphy is a really tough grader, so make sure you read the samples and go into office hours! She is very accessible outside of class and was willing to work with me when I had an emergency during the semester. Overall, a good experience!
Not only is she a strict grader, but if she doesn't agree with. your opinion paper, she will grade you poorly and announce your grade with your name in from of the class. She's very discriminative.
I've had her for two semesters now, and she's okay. If you're good at writing, you can definitely pull an A in the class; if it's not your strong suit, just take someone else. She grades really strictly and can be kind of a bully sometimes (she sort of treats students as her inferiors), but her class is bearable and she's very accessible.
Students often use the phrase Im drowning in homework when they have a lot to do. Extending on that metaphor, this class was the educational equivalent of waterboarding. You turn two long papers on Tuesday? Peer reviews if 6 different papers due in 48 hours. You think you can breathe for a moment? Nope. Youre already behind on the next paper.
I never struggled in an English class before I had Dr. Murphy. I lost all confidence in my writing in 198, and spent hours in the Writing Center editing papers for her. I got an A in 298 with a different prof, no problem, and with less effort. If you have to take her, have her look over your writing at every stage in office hours, no matter what.
She is a lovely person and loves what she does. However, she is very tough grader. She assigns a lot of homework that are also pretty difficult. She's always willing to help, but its the fact that she's a tough grader that makes it so difficult. The tests is probably the hardest thing in that class besides some projects. Participation does mater.
Dr. Murphy seems nice, but she can be harsh at times, both in the classroom and when grading. You have to get a 93 in her course to get an A, but the highest grade she gives out on any assignment is a 96. She comes across as very condescending and will make you feel stupid if you answer wrong in class.
Shes a good teacher, just not a very good person. My favorite thing about her is that she taught us everything we needed to know for the class and didn't expect us to have any prior knowledge. Worst thing about her is you'll have no idea what your grade is because she takes forever to grade. Go to her office hours if you want any feedback at all.
Dr. Murphy is a very tough grader, and is very straightforward in telling you what you are and are not doing well. It is difficult to do well in her class, you have to be willing to work very hard just for a paper with no guarantee it will get above an 80. Hope you get good peer review partners and that you pick good topics for your papers.
Professor Murphy is great! She is fabulous at responding to emails. My only complaint would be the length of time it takes her to grade, so I have no idea how I am doing in her class. Overall, she's wonderful, and I'm taking her again next semester!
Professor Murphy gave us several projects and papers, but we had ample time to complete them. She is kind of a tough grader, but she gives great and detailed feedback. In class, she was such a joy to be around. I definitely recommend taking her; I will certainly take her again. We did read and use the textbooks a lot.
I really enjoyed Dr. Murphy's class! While a lot of what people have said about her being a tough grader I do find to be true, she does a great job of setting you up for success. She was always easily reached by email, had office hours twice a week, assigned us a peer editing group, and gave us example assignments from past years to look at.
While the class was challenging, I had all of the resources to succeed. Dr. Murphy was very accessible and even read over an essay draft for me. Though a tough grader, she gave really specific, helpful feedback. She also gave us several opportunities for revisions and set us up with peer review groups. Easy in-class activities but hard assignments.
Her expectations are extremely unclear. Dont take this class if you need to pass. I am regularly high B/low A student and this class may be the reason I wont graduate. I spent hours on my last assignment and I made a 70, giving options for revision especially during finals time such as this one is incredibly unrealistic.
Read four plays this semester, same assignments for each of them. No fear Shakespeare's a lifesaver. Very structured class. Basically gives you a blueprint for what she expects on every assignment. Few assignments heavily weighted, those are graded the toughest. Workload a little more than average but expected... just do your work and be creative
Dr. Murphy is an extremely hard grader, who struggles to release grades and comments on major papers until the last week of class well after they would be useful for other papers. Students are left mostly to their own devices when it comes to major papers that make up the majority of your course grade. The workload is heavy with poor instructions.
This was probably the worst and hardest english class Ive ever taken. Dr. Murphy assigns lots of papers, with some overlapping. The turn around time of rough drafts to final drafts was very quick. Peer reviews were expected to be very detailed when not given enough time to even do them. I would not recommend her if you want to get a good grade!
For freshmen taking English 198 or 298, Dr. Murphy is the hardest professor you can have. She is a great teacher if you are an English major. Otherwise, if you are any other major, it is not worth taking her because she will make sure only two or three people will get an A in the class.
Good teacher and makes class interesting. Lots of homework--you will definitely need to work ahead if you want to complete the assignments on time. There are no exams or quizzes, it is a true writing only class. Two big projects throughout the semester-- one is a powerpoint presentation and one is a long historical essay. There is no final exam!!
Dr. Murphy is very quick to answer any questions or concerns by email and she was always willing to help me with my projects! There were around 5 major assignments for this class, but they were very reasonable and she gave us plenty of time to complete them all. The rest is homework for completion grades and peer reviews for the major assignments.
Class is mostly discussion based. There are no tests, and only a couple long writing assignments. She's pretty fun in class, and did a great job teaching the Shakespeare plays. The reading is not too bad either, and her attendance policy is pretty flexible. She grades things quickly and fairly, and allows revisions on some of the bigger assignments
There are a million assignments in this class BUT she did not bother to grade assignments until exam week. I had a 97 in the class until the last couple weeks of school and then my grade dropped 10 points by the end of the semester.
Way too strict on grading and will find ways to take partial credit off.
If you are not a english major do not even consider this class. She grades way to strict and expects you to be the best writer in the world. Her projects are WAY too long and I would spend hours on it and won't get anything about a 80. I have a 3.8 GPA and a elective class has screwed me over.
This was the hardest English class I have ever taken. I have never gotten lower than an A in any English class I have taken before. I worked hard on my essays but could not manage to get above an 80 on my papers. Not only does Dr. Murphy grade extremely hard but she gave an insane amount of work finals week without putting in any of our grades.
Am about to graduate college and I thought back on this professor randomly out of no where and wanted to leave a review for her to hopefully see. She doesn't seem so bad but she is just so WEIRD, and very judgemental in a lowkey way. Very passive aggressive, and tbh, she's a big ole word that starts with B
Will make you hate writing
She is nice?, but is such a slow and tough grader. She still hasn't returned grades for an essay written mid-March. Also, criteria for projects can be vague. About 40% of our grades haven't been put in and its the last day of classes. The projects are fine but, the stress of not knowing your grade isn't worth it.
Avoid this class if you can.
Dr. Murphy is a great, responsive professor with very interesting perspectives, but her 298 class leaves a lot to desire. Between the busy work (SO. MUCH.), redundant class periods, learning about new assignments weeks in advance, and overwhelming due dates, this class will give even the biggest English lovers anger issues and mental instability.
It's not that the content is particularly hard. It's just that there's SO MUCH and 85% of it means nothing. Class time is mostly spent reading a sample and doing an analysis that you will never look at again. For every 100 step project there is a “reflection essay” due the same day. Mindless yet all-consuming. Shout-out to my working group though
For an honors course, there was a ton of "busywork" that was miserable. She also doesn't give 100s on major assignments and takes forever to grade papers. She is sweet, helpful during office hours, and her classes aren't too bad, but she's too particular about small stuff and gives too much work overall. I wouldn't take if you aren't an ENG major.
She belittled me for 15 minutes straight, even cussing me out at one point. She was very mean, saying that my writing was a "disgrace" and that "I never do anything right." She asked if I had ever even opened a book. For reference, I attended every class and had a 97.
I loved Dr.Murphy as a person, but it got very stressful with the way she grades. For this being English 102, she was a very tough grader. She did give a lot of feedback which was helpful, but overall way more stressful than Eng 102 should've been.
Takes forever to grade (won't receive grade on your first paper of the semester until finals week). Only way you will ever get any type of feedback is if you go to office hours. Class itself is miserable and boring, and you have to attend every single one. Ridiculous amount of homework and mandatory reading for ENGL 102. Avoid at all costs.
If you have any self-respect, stay away from this Professor. I was doing fine all semester, and then, in finals week, she put in a bunch of grades from months before that she had not graded. This led me to have an F in the class the week of finals, and I had little to no time to make up the assignments and study for my other finals.
Avoid at all costs. Nice lady but the structure of this class is terrible.
very rude and unprofessional. obnoxious and mean when critiquing. needs to understand she is a PROFESSOR, meaning freshmen who take her classes aren't going to be professional writers already. seriously, i cannot stress enough how rude she was to myself and my classmates, not caring to call people out or belittle them in front of the class. avoid.
All the heavily weighted assignments, you'll submit drafts and get feedback on to revise before actually submitting it for a grade. Grades difficulty and attendance is mandatory. The class can get difficult and frustrating, but she's helpful and replies to emails. You do have to prep for classes beforehand which gets annoying and can be a lot.
The other reviews on here do not do Dr. Murphy justice! While the workload can be a lot at times, as long as you put in the effort, you're set. Dr. Murphy is ALWAYS prepared, a fast grader, and always available to help. JOIN OFFICE HOURS! She reviewed my writing with me and always gave helpful feedback that truly enhanced my skills. TAKE HER CLASS!
