Prof. Warber used to teach on Navy ships and you can tell, shes not extremely friendly and her sarcasm is a bit off putting sometimes. She does stick to the basics and isnt to overwhelming with information though-multiple choice tests and 1 paper...i dont know if i would recommend or not
Best class ever! Prof Warber knows her stuff and how to teach it. History was interesting for the first time ever. I even watch the History Channel now! Tough on grading essays - she loves that red pen. Class is as hard as you make it. Go to class and do the work and you're good to go.
She was great! She is very laid-back and has a comfortable style. I learned a lot and had fun doing so. Her Navy experiences add another dimension to the class and helps bring the topic to life. I would highly reccommend her!
Not friendly? She was the coolest prof I had. She made history fun and was very approachable; I went to her office hours several times and she really helped me out. Take her class!
Great prof...class is mostly lecture but she makes it interesting with her background. Tests are easy as long as you study, final is not cumulative and paper is easy if you know anything about writing. I would recommend her for sure, shes brings something new to the history department!
Wow, she was the best prof I've ever had! Totally down to earth, funny, and likeable. However, she can be a smartass, but that's good or bad, depending upon which end you're on. Mostly lectures, but interesting b/c of her pictures, stories, etc. Good teacher and everyone should take her.
While she was knowledgeable, her biting sarcasm made her less than approachable for questions.
Very crude language, but the woman knows her stuff. Read the book and go to class, you'll be fine.
Arrogant? I couldn't believe someone used that word to describe her. She was ammusing, a great lecturer, and helpful when I asked questions. My favorite history prof so far...
Horrible, Horrible professor. I have already graduated and come back for further studies and she is hands down the worst professor I have ever encountered both in her approach and knowledge. She also needs to take a modern day writing class to get with the times. Very opinionated and will not allow your opinion to be expressed. SAVE YOURSELF!
Although her approach to teaching history is different than the traditional one, she is a great professor who has a sense of humor and is able to make dry historical events seem interesting. Attend class, and there will not be much need to buy the book.
Overbearing know it all!! I have never met a prof so full of ones self. She grasps what she is teaching but acts as if no one has ever understood it like she has and any differing opinions are wrong. Worst teacher I have ever had.
I was shocked when I read a rating that said negative things about her. She makes class interesting, and has a fun lecture style. She can be tough on grading writing, but her tests aren't that hard at all. Her's was my favorite class.
I too was suprised that someone said such negative things about Prof. Warber. Sure, she makes jokes about how "fabulous" she is, but it is just having fun. Besides, I think it is true. I am not a history major, but I signed up to take another class with her. Her Navy stories are great and the powerpoints add a lot to lecture.

Grrrreat class.
Sam was GREAT! I have never had so much fun and learned so much in a history class!! I too have signed up to take another class with her. She can be sarcastic, so if you don't have a sense of humor don't take her. She was very helpful and even gave extra credit!! SHE IS AWESOME!!
Great Prof!!! She's hilarious!! She talks a lot about teaching to Navy guys and her life stories!! She loves history and has a great way of getting you to enjoy it too. She's a very fair grader and her tests are very EASY!!! She doesn't take attendance either!
Best prof at GV
Prof Warber is AWESOME. I def recommend her. She makes class bearable and is very funny. I love hearing some of her old navy stories. Just DONT MISS CLASS. You cover a lot of material in one session. STUDY the notes for the tests and skim the chapters as well. It really helps when it comes to the tests. Best prof at GVSU by far.
I loved her class. She is sarcastic, has the greatest stories, and is really helpful is you need to see her in the office. I reccommend her for anyone, history major or not.
Warber makes learning History fun and interesting. Attend class, take detailed notes on her lectures and you will do fine on the exams. Her Navy stories are a hoot! Take her and you will be happy.
Very nice professor. Uses alot of her travelling experience in her lectures. You will do wel if you study the notes that you take and the chapters. She gives a lot of information but is well worth it.
Warber has a passion for teaching. GVSU would be well to retain her PhD or no.
She has been to the places seh teaches about.
Best teacher I've had so far at GV, she is passionate about history, makes it fun, and is incredibly smart and realistic in her ideas (something I find lacking in the college PC world). Her Navy stories are hilarious and her sense of humor is fantastic. Study the notes, make sure your writing is on par with her requirements, and you'll do well.
Learned a lot. Great teaching style. Very willing to help whenever you need it.
She was an awsome prof! her navt stoires were so funny and made the class intresting! Make sure you go to class and take good notes on her lecture and you will do great and enjoy the class alot!
great teacher...she's really clear and she knows a lot about history, fair tests and interesting lectures...she's hilarious! my favorite history class so far!
This prof is very helpful and a fresh idea on history. Her stories about her travels adds to the class.
What a great teacher! Anybody that can make hominids and ancient civilizations intriguing is worth having! Her tests and essays are not that bad and honestly she makes the class fun. Best advice-take thorough notes because all of her test questions are from the lectures.
Prof. Warber was very personable, easy to work with, and clearly loved her field. She speaks with conviction. Any defects are sure to improve with experience.
AMAZING! I love professor Warber. She made the class awesome with her stories and just overall, shes a great history teacher. Though, if you are not open to religious and political scrutiny, well you either lighten up or not take her. Though the comments weren't frequent, they were there. (Personally I thought they were funny, you might not).
I am really sad that she will not be teaching at Grand Valley anymore. She has been one of my fav teachers here. She makes class fun and interesting and she certainly knows her stuff, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend taking her.
A.M.A.zing. Crystal clear! Made the material interesting with her great laid back sense of humor. Great stories that help you remember material! I love this woman, she was great and deserves a raise :)!
I don't really like history, but she made it interesting. she lectures all hour but she has a good sense of humor and personal stories that she shares. i would recommend her if she stays here
Awesome professor, would recommend her to anyone
Awesome prof! Hilarious and great teacher.
Great teacher made it fun and interesting very funny and sarcastic but good easy class just go take notes and do the quizzes
Warber is a pretty good prof. I had her at 8 AM, she cursed like a sailor and talked down about men. Overall a very good prof. you'll get a lot out of the class, and she jokes around quite a bit.
Loved this class. She made it easy and fun.
Never knew I liked history until her class! She is laid-back and tells the best stories. You have to attend everyday because the notes are extensive, but if you have them all and study, you will do fine. I wish she taught more classes!
dont EVER leave gvsu without taking this prof! I absolutely HATE history, it has nothing to do with my major. but i attended every single lecture because 1) this chick is funny as hell and 2) she ligit makes this subject interesting. i actually looked forward to class... call me crazy. she is awesome!
Great prof! She has so many stories about things she's done and she really knows her stuff. You get a good idea about mythology that's beyond Greek and Roman. It's really interesting. She's funny and you have to take everything she says with a grain of salt. Lots of sarcasm.
The best history teacher i have ever had. PLEASE take this class if history is uninteresting to you. she is loud and funny and truly makes it fun.
Best teacher ever!! I HATE history and she made it soo much fun to listen to and easy to understand! By far the best prof i have ever had at GV! Dont leave without taking her. She does lecture all hour and you HAVE to take notes in order to do well, but if u go to class you will be fine!
Best class ever. I looked forward to going to this class! She makes it very interesting and exciting! lots of notes, but no HW and no book. Just lecture. A couple of quizes, and 4 tests, not comprehensive.! Even if history does not interest you TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Great Professor, you need to attend class and you need to take notes, but she is fun and interesting. Exams are easy if you pay attention and take good notes. You have like 5 quizzes that you take home.
She was a GREAT teacher! I was never interested in history and by taking her class I am considering making History my minor. She is extremely funny and tells us great stories abuot her experiences in the Navy. I recommend her!!
Such a great teacher. She has many great stories about her life which help keep the class interesting... You will have to go to every single class, but it is well worth it.
BEST PROF I'VE EVER HAD. Seriously hilarious, and so nice. I would highly, highly recommend her. She only teaches ENG 204 every once in a while, but I'm sure she is great for history too.
This is one of my favorite classes I've taken at GVSU! She is so funny and her lectures are really interesting. She is super laid back. Overall, great prof.
Awesome prof...I am NOT a History person whatsoever, but Warber made it interesting. You have to go to class, take good notes, and study them in order to do well--but she's so damn funny that you will actually enjoy class. TAKE HER IF YOU CAN!
Great professor! My favorite gen-ed course in my four years here at GV. She is hilarious, and there are only 3 exams, and various take home quizzes.
Prof. Warber is awesome- she's hilarious and actually made history interesting. The only professor I would ever get up early enough to take a 9am with. You'll be glad you took her class.
By far my favorite teacher I have had at Grand Valley! She is hilarious and keeps the class very interesting! You only have about 3 exams and a couple take-home quizzes that are super easy. Take her if you can!
AWESOME Professor! kept me entertained the whole time and i actually learned the info. Her stories are so funny and her tests are pretty easy. take her if you have the opportunity to!
Great prof! My absolute favorite! Attendance wasn't mandatory but I went everyday because it was so interesting! Three easy exams and a couple take home quizzes! TAKE HER IF YOU CAN!!
Great teacher, extremely straight forward and clear. 3 exams alongside 3 homework assignments make up your grade, but great class.
TAKE HER! Compared to what I heard to other HST 101 professors she was the easiest, only 3 exams total one being the final, which was not cumulative. Her quizzes were actually take home worksheets, and tests were straight from lecture notes. And to top it off she is hilarious, she made the 6-9 fly by, I definitely recommend her!
Attendance not mandatory, textbook not required, 3 exams, 6 take-home quizzes. TAKE LOTS OF NOTES. Warber was EXCELLENT. She traveled a lot through her life, so she's very cultured and knows exactly what she's talking about (Her stories are hilarious!) She's quirky and enthusiastic. Very fun. She'll pique your interest in history. I guarantee it.
Good Professor. I had a boat load of notes to study for each exam (15-20 pages), but test were fair and quizzes are automatic points. Study and you will do great!
GREAT prof! She has a lot of experience, knows what she is talking about. She's a strong woman and isn't afraid to say so. Very funny, make you remeber everything when it comes time for the test! She also had eclectic style!
She's such a delightful and a strong woman and I have to say that I REALLY enjoyed being in her class. She treats you like a college student and not just another kid. I would definitely recommend her.
She is amazing, take her! A feminist and a true historian! There's a lot of notes for the class but she makes everything very clear and easy to remember. The class is a comedy hour for her, great personality, cool style and very knowledgeable.
Very boring lectures, although she can have good stories sometimes. Grades based off of 3 exams and 5 quizzes, and her exams are all based off lecture which means you have about 50 pages of notes to study. Definitely not an easy A.
Prof. Warber is fantastic! She's knowledgable about history and is truly passionate about the subject. She has her opinions, but she does express concepts very clearly and makes the material interesting through her hilarious stories. Her exams are easy if you go to class and study the notes. Whether you love/hate history, you will love her class!
I hated history prior to Warber's course. She made it exciting and fun to learn. I find her way of explaining easy to follow and enrertaining. She is wonderful! You won't want to miss class because she tells the story of history like it were a soap opera! Highly recommend. Easy tests if you attend lecture.
Absolutely incredible! By far the best history class I've ever taken! made me actually want to minor American History. She's the best prof I've ever had!
She doesn't give too much work, and is fairly entertaining. I would say definitely take her.
She is a great professor who is really passionate about her subject. She has a lot of stories to relate to back when she was a professor in the Navy. She is hilarious and makes the subject actually interesting. However, she only has 3 exams, and 5 take home quizzes. The quizzes are easy but the exams you have about 25 pages of notes to memorize.
She was AMAZING! I would take her course all over again. Make sure you to the lectures though because she didn't use a textbook. I loved the fact she had stories to back up what we learned from her experiences in teaching on Navy ships. She is hilarious too. If you get the chance take her course. She made it really interesting and enjoyable.
SHE IS THE BEST! Your grade is based off exams and 5 homework assignments from readings. The homework doesn't take long and is easy and her test follow her lectures exactly. I studied the night before every test and got an A. I would take her again if I could.
I had her for a history gen ed. I actually enjoyed going to this class even though it was a three hour long friday morning class. She is hilarious and will tell tons of interesting stories.
boring class and a lot of notes required to study. I didn't like her too much.
Really an easy class if you actually show up to the lectures. She makes her lectures very interesting and she is very funny. The exams were super easy and although she is a tough grader on the assignments, they are relatively easy to complete. Overall an interesting and easy class.
Fabulous professor! I learned an incredible amount and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. She is so relaxed and yet knows SO MUCH about a wide range of history.
Took HIS 201 at MCC with Sam Warber. She is really funny and sparked a new appreciation for history in me! Only a few assignments based of readings. All the answers are there just have to read carefully. Only four tests and she has great power points to take notes off of. She has great stories and first hand experiences at places you talk about!
So great- she tells history as a story and is incredibly brilliant. She is hilarious and reminds me of Melissa McCarthy. It's an easy class, but you have to do well on the assignments. I used to hate history but I look forward to this class.
The class was a piece of cake as long as you went to lecture. She is the funniest prof I've had. She shares so many funny stories and really speaks her mind. No papers, no books. A few reading assignments and thats it. Awesome lady!
She's relatable and makes her lectures fun. Tests are kinda tough, but papers are an easy A; just make sure you proofread for mechanics and grammar, she will mark you down. She does bring her politics into the classroom, which wouldn't be a big deal, but she should take more responsibility in presenting the facts instead of just her spin on it.
She's such a cool and laid back person that you would think the class is an easy A but its not. She teaches 100% lecture and its hard to get information to stick just from reading chronological notes takes in class. Tests ask very specific questions and she will try to trick you on tests. Not the worst professor, but easier ones to get a good grade
She didn't want to help me when I sent emails and she always marked me down on my history assignments for minimal bad grammar. As soon as she got me with bad grammar on the first assignment, I have been plagued even though I have had my assignments checked by a few other people. Her lectures are fun and entertaining but her tests are too specific.
She is funny but lectures the entire time. Tests are really hard and very specific. Doesn't help you when you go in for office hours. Some of the times she is not there for office hours. DONT TAKE
She is very funny and I wasn't interested in history before the class, but she made it worth it to go to class!
Loved her lectures. I have never been a history person but she made it interesting. However, her tests were ridiculous. You could know all of the material and do horrible. The way she asks questions are very confusing and tricky. I went to class and studied and ended with a C, it was very frustrating. She is very picky when grading homework too.
Professor Warber's class will be lecture for the whole class, but the way she lectures makes class ten times more enjoyable. Her test are straight from her lecture. You will usually know the information she wants while she lectures. As long as you take good notes and study your notes, the test should be easy, and test are always in order with notes
You'll take a lot of notes. Just be prepared and study a lot for your tests and you should be fine. Don't skip the class
Class it total lecture. Of the three tests in the class she didn't finish her lecture on any. The information is off her notes and what you take off her lecture in class solely. The book was not used at all and a waste of money to buy. Her language in class is sometimes crude and very unprofessional. Overall distracting and unnecessary.
She's great, lectures go by fast. Lots of note taking
I loved professor warber! the whole class is lecture base and note taking, so no book is required and if you skip class you will be lost, however she is very straight forward and gives you a grading sheet with exactly what she is looking for. Her lectures keep you interested! highly recommend her and would take this class again! learned so much!
She is by far one of the best teachers/profs I have ever had! She makes history very interesting and fun. If you have to take a gen ed history class then I highly recommend this class! Make sure to show up to each class because the tests are purely lecture notes. If you are planning on not showing up, do not take this class.
i honestly hated this class. Mostly because I'm not the type of person to sit on my ass for two hours to get notes. I wish there were more assignments or projects to help. If you want to pass, attend every class, and read the book. Also, no extra credit, only 4 tests, and 4 assignments (assignments don't go with the test either).
Loved her class! Take her for American Civ. if you can. I really enjoyed her lectures and I thought the class was pretty easy.
I am not a huge history fan, but I was after I took Warber's class. Her lectures are great, but be prepared to take a lot of notes.
Favorite class so far! I wish all my profs had her personality.
Makes a history class fun and engaging, lots of good stories during lecture
I loved Professor Warber! Her lectures were never boring! There were only 5 reading assignments throughout the semester and 3 exams. She will look over all your assignments before you turn them in and tell you exactly what you did wrong. I got 100% on all the assignments! Loved her!
Prof Warber was my favorite professor, and I HATE history. She made everything so easy to learn because she is hilarious. Often tells stories and makes jokes so its easy to pay attention. Would highly recommend taking her class if you can. Attendance isn't mandatory but you need the notes to pass.
Warber is the funniest professor I have ever had. She made History fun and interesting. The class consisted of 5 homework assignments and 3 exams. All the exams are based off her lecturing, so you have to go to class in order to do well on the exams. Overall, she was amazing and I defintely recommend. She has so many great stories that help!
This woman made me actually enjoy lectures AND history! A true miracle.. She had amazing stories to tell and truly understood the material she taught. I would 100% recommend her. Homework was easy points, and tests were all multiple choice. Material wasn't hard if you listened in class and studied your notes.
Warber is probably my favorite professor i had my freshman year. She is really funny and makes her lectures interesting. The lectures require nonstop note taking but the material is interesting so I didn't mind. She gave us three exams and like five assignments and that the whole grade. She doesn't take attendance but you'll get behind is you miss
This prof is an ABSOLUTE RIOT. So so funny. She makes all of her lectures fun and interesting. If you pay attention you will be golden. Also, there are about 5 assignments, which are made up from"take home quizzes" you really just read an article and answer questions. You also have 3 tests throughout the semester. Study those notes!!!
AMAZING. One of the most funny profs I have had here at GV. Her lectures are actually interesting and she has so many good stories to tell so you aren't bored out of your mind at the material. However you need to be in class to pass, since theres no text to save you and the tests are based on her lectures. Would take again !!
She was hands down the best teacher I had freshman year! Her personality makes the class something you look forward going to. She is a really hard grader with A LOT of notes but if you pay attention and go over your notes frequently youll do good. ABSOLUTLY recommend this professor
Overall she was a funny professor and made class interesting... but the grade is based on three tests and like four assignments... and test are over like 20 pages of notes... go to her office hours and she will help you! she really wants you to do well and understands her class is difficult! but she is a great professor
Professor Warber makes history interesting, and will teach you many things that you didn't learn from your US history classes in high school. Every class, she'll have a story to tell. It will mostly be about her days on the navy ship she used to teach on. She is a stickler when it comes to her assignments however, try not to mess them up!
If you are not a big history fan and are taking this gen ed, I wouldnt recommend Professor Warber. This class is hard. Your grade in the class is based off 6 homework assignments and 3 tests. Homework assignments are graded tough and tests are on around 30 pages of typed notes. But Warber is hilarious, very knowledgable, and has great stories.
Took this class as a 6-9, which was rough, but Professor Warber made it enjoyable. There are four papers throughout the class and she can be a bit of a tough grader. Exams are really easy if you take good notes during lectures and study. All in all, if you attend class and take good notes, you'll do just fine.
Hard grader!!! take home quiz instructions not clear. Only 3 tests based on like 25 pages of notes. so you have to be in class to get notes.
She is hilarious! Made lectures interesting and fun. I don't recommend skipping. She does not post pp's on bb. So you have to be there to get the notes. Tests are based on 20+ pages of your own notes (no study guide). You read a book throughout the semester with 6 quizzes to complete. Her personality made me want to come to class and learn.
This class consisted of 6 quiz and 3 test grades. To take notes, you have to write everything as she speaks very fastly. Tests were over 30+ pages of notes &no study guide was given to narrow things down. How am I expected to remember that many notes? ridiculous. And since so few grades were put in there were minimum chances to bring your grade up
Awesome Professor that cares about students learning. Grades very tough on the papers but if you show that you are willing to go above and beyond she will reward you.
She really is the funniest professor. she makes class really interesting. book is "required" but you can get by no problem without it. the class average for the first exam was 90% with no study guide and 20 pages of notes.. her lectures are just that good - really easy to learn and comprehend. easy a if you work well.
Very interesting lectures. Make sure you show up to class because her lectures are like 25 pages. The only difficult thing is the essays. She grades you not really on the content of the paper, but more so on her writing guidelines. Just expect to not get 50/50 on those. Id take her again, she just is a picky grader who loves to bleed on papers.
One of the worst professors I have had a GV. She has 3 tests and 6 quizzes. These "quizzes" are really take-home quizzes that you read the textbook for and answer the questions. You are graded by your understanding of the content but on your grammar?? Which was super stupid, especially since she made several grammatical errors in her questions.
She is really funny, but she grades her papers really harshly. I have never gotten a C on a paper and that is basically all I got on all of my papers. She doesn't grade on the content she grades on comma usage and by saying things are awkward and not explaining anything. Her tests are the notes you take in class every day. Go to every class.
Worst part of her class is that you only get 3 tests and 6 quizzes with no make up/extra credit. I worked my butt off on her quizzes and never got an A and I have no idea why - she'll mark questions wrong that I answered directly from the reading. Her tests are based on 20+ pages of notes so you have to study hard or you won't pass. She's HARSH.
Easily my favorite class at GV so far!! Don't let some of these reviews sway you, TAKE THIS CLASS!! As long as you come to class, take notes, and put in effort you'll be just fine. I never scored less than a B on a paper, test, or exam. Lectures are super interesting and you can tell that she has lived the material and is extremely knowledgeable!
Warber is the worst professor I have EVER had at GVSU. She has 6 "quizzes" which are really just takehome assignments that she grades on grammar (?) instead of actual content, even though she had several grammatical errors in the questions she asked. 3 tests that were impossible,no powerpoints she just talked and you jus had to guess what to write
Do Not take her for a night class! She keeps you there the whole 3 hours and screams if you try to pack up your stuff a second earlier. People say she is cool and funny. She has a good personality but comes across as really mean and swears a lot to make herself look cooler/funnier. She grades SO hard on grammar and assignments impossible.
Professor Warber is very funny and make cass entertaining! Lectures are very long and you end up with alotttt of notes to study for each test though. Also, she is a tough grader on papers so make sure you double check your work! Although class is not mandatory SHOW UP! She doesnt have notes online you must get them from class. You dont need book!
I have to laugh at those reviews that say she grades tough... The answers are right in the assignments, but you just can't write like a moron. Her lectures are great and as long as you stay up on them the tests are obvious. I switched to a history minor because of her class!
Take professor Warber if you can! She is absolutely fantastic! I looked forward to going to her class every single day. She cares about what she teaches and it is clear. I absolutely love her and will take her class any chance I get.
