Math is definitely not my subject but if you do the homework and make sure you understand the material, you will do fine. He does online quizzes sometimes which is nice, my only problem is that I don't practice math enough for it to stick. This class is challenging but VERY manageable. He is great.
Great instructor and is willing to help students that need it. Lectures are interesting and is clear that he enjoys the subject matter. Class does get difficult but is expected because of the subject.
Passion, care about your success in this class and well preparedness for the next level. Understand concepts no memorization (simply you are allowed to have formulas sheet double sided to use during tests and quizzes).
If your not innately good at math itll be very difficult to get an A in this class.
If you really want to learn, take this proffesor. Focus in the class and you will learn, but if you start texting in his class, you won't understand anything he says
He is a really nice guy and funny sometimes but his class was very confusing. You have to study on your own to pass the class. A lot of home and the tests are really hard. Wouldn't recommend it but if you're good at math and want to put in time then go ahead. BUT DON'T DO IT
He is such an AMAZING PROFESSOR!!He is so considerate and caring. He answers all emails and gives ALOT of extra credit! Focus, try your best, attend class and your grade will reflect your efforts!! He enjoys math and tries his best to help his student's grade :)
Overall if you want to learn, take this Professor. Don't get psyched out and put in as much effort as you can manage and you will be OK. Would recommend.
He was an amazing professor! He truly cares that everyone does well as long as you show that you are trying. He gave bonus points to boost up your grade. Oh and online quizzes! I took his 6 week summer class so it was fast paced but he continued on the same lesson if someone was confused on it and gave more examples until understood.
His class is a little different than your usual math course. He has a very unique style of making math simple as long as you pay attention. I think the best part of the class is his attitude, and the fact he cares about the students. Some people complain about how he sometimes puts you in the spotlight, but those are the texters in the back.
I would 100% recommend Professor Nefissi. He's very enthusiastic about Math and he takes the time to make sure everyone in class understands the material. He's very thorough yet extremely nice, but if you're going to be rude and text or nap while he lectures, don't complain about him calling you out for it. He's only strict because he cares!
Professor Nefissi is as good as it gets. Pre- calculus can be hard on its own if you're not really a math person like myself, but Professor Nefissi makes it manageable. He gives A LOT of extra credit opportunities, and test are set up exactly the same are the review guides. Also drops lowest test grade!!! I recommend him 10/10.
So glad I had the opportunity to have him as my teacher. I haven't done math in about 20 years and was concerned. He really explained everything well, had clear expectations and was more than fair. He had many extra credit problems during class. If you show up and do your homework you should be fine. I went to math lab every week to study too.
Nefissi is such a great professor. I've taken him for a few semesters and I know he really cares about his students. He drops the lowest test, lowest quiz and lowest homework. Most quizzes are online, a few are in class. If you study and put the work in, he will certainly see your efforts and help you achieve the grade you want. Take him!!!
Professor Nefissi is a very cool guy! This subject is overall difficult, but if you have to take it, I would highly suggest taking him! He really wants all his students to pass and does what he can to help you pass! He's a funny guy and wants you to earn your grade but will be there if you need any help! I would strongly recommend him!
This is a great professor for calc 3. He posts all notes and solutions online. He even gives practice take home tests then goes over them in class. Calc 3 can be hard, but if you put the time to study in, you can get an A with him. He gives a decent amount of "pop quiz" extra credit, so pay attention! He is funny, very nice, and a great professor.
Great professor. His notes are detailed and easy to follow. He makes you work hard for your grade, but provides opportunities for extra credit on tests and in class. He is very knowledgeable about the material and you can tell that he genuinely cares about his students.
He isnt the best prof if you havent had math in awhile. wont stop &review topics that he deemed basic or review. If you do ask review question he will belittle you in front of the class &do the problem slowly so everyone can understand. The test were similar to review &most quizzes were on bb. Had to seek lots of outside help to pass with a B
I could learn much more in the math center compared to his class. He expects you to know things. The lecture goes very fast. There are extra credits here and there, but it happens like soon after he explains it. If you don't pay attention during class (I totally didn't, too hard to understand, too sleepy), good luck getting any. Must study!! Focus!
Professor Nefissi is amazing! He's great at explaining things; however, he sometimes expects you to know things right away. If you don't put the effort in, you will not pass the class! 4 exams, a final, and quizzes every now and then. Lowest exam gets dropped. Overall, great professor but you need to do ALOT of work outside of class to pass.
Professor Nefissi does a great job teaching hard material. It doesn't matter who you take for this class, the material is hard and you need to work for to pass, but he makes it much easier for you to succeed and is very pro-student. His practice exams resemble the actual exams. Additional pro - he drops the lowest exam, quiz, and HW grade!!
He assumes the students already know everything and rushes though the lectures. Do his online quizzes, and study guides, no hw, some extra credit. You really have to learn a lot by yourself :( the tests are nothing like the study guide. good luck!
Easily one of the best profs I've had at NOVA. Though he doesn't do much review of previous concepts, his lectures are straightforward and easy to understand if you know the basics. Occasionally he will throw in some extra credit work in-class, and he knows how to get everyone engaged. He's also pretty funny at times. Would definitely recommend.
Prof Nefissi is definitely in command of math subjects. He breaks down complex problems with a simpler, almost algorithmic approach. He doesnt like distractions in his lectures, so put your cellphone away. His tests are tough but there are plenty of chances for extra credit.
He tries to make it easy, weekend homework, Extra credit offer up to 100 point by throwing random question in class. One each of lowest quiz, exam and homework score dropped. Study guide and solution provided, which is 80% roughly in exam. Little fast in teaching but fair enough to get A if you study only his notes and practice classwork at home.!
A real solid professor, really wants you to do well in his class. Helps out a lot, and really wants you to succeed out of the class. If you do the work and pay attention, you will do well. I would suggest having a clear understanding of Calc 1, because you will fail if you don't.
Definitely one of my top choices as a math professor. He can make lectures interesting, and can sometimes be pretty funny. His practice exams are almost exactly the same as the actual ones, just be careful because he gives a couple pop quizzes. Easily one of the best math professors on the nova manassas campus.
Absolutely one of the best professors I have ever taken. Even though the level of difficulty in the subject of math is undeniably high, his teaching style makes it lovely and enjoyable. His ability to convey the material is efficient in terms of transferring the knowledge and an organized framework. Highly Recommended!
Thick accent that is hard to understand. Gives study guides that are unrelated to tests/quizzes. Lectures are interesting but not engaging. Very little opportunity for extra credit. All in class tests/quizzes are no calculator, so beware. Homework is picky with answers and it ends up counting as a large part of your grade, so do your homework!
He has an accent but once you're used to him he's not hard to understand. He put the notes up on Blackboard so you could catch up if you missed anything during class. The study guides he gave for tests were really helpful, and he let you have a page of notes for every exam. He was willing to help people and genuinely wants students to succeed!
Rushed through material, teaches new material the class before a test and expects students to know the new material for the test.
He is awful!! He sits on his chair throughout the lecture and writes on a piece of paper with colored pens which is hard to read. You cannot hear him or see the board. He doesn't care about his students and has a major attitude. He's not responsive to questions and often gets upset if you ask him anything. It was ROUGH!
Sit and the front and you'll get a C if you put the work in correctly (everyday) you will get an A or B. He's hard but there's nothing better at Nova.
Calc 2 Personality: respectful, good mood, understandable accent, stays after class to answer questions, answers emails. Tests: 75% of each test is its practice test, take home and in class quizzes. Homework: easy webassign. Grading: fast, gives lots of extra credit. Textbook: It's calculus. You're going to need it regardless of the professor.
He's a great professor though tough at times. Drops the lowest test, quiz, and HW. Attend the lecture and read over them after, he posts them all online. Goes over practice test in class which is a solid 70/80 on the test if you have it down. Focuses on concepts so test question aren't incredibly difficult. Smart guy and breaks down concepts well.
He is a nice professor. But his grading is super intense. I took applied calc 1 and nothing made sense. I couldnt click any of the material. He made it hard. I feel like it could have been taught without needing huge difficult problems. He did have study guides but nothing was on the test. Read the chapters and study the chapters b4 coming to clas
Took Calc 1. He is good professor but however, his teaching style is very different. Did attended all his class, took notes and barely pass the class with C. I found his exams were very difficult. Take someone else to save your GPA.
He is a great professor. He dropped the lowest quizzes' grades, test and gave you extra credit for the final exam. There will be quizzes every week and practice tests before the exams. If you do and understand well the questions on his practice test, you will be fine. It is a math class so you are required to do homework to understand concepts.
He's not good. Don't waste you time with him
math isn't my subject. 2nd time taking it. however, he truly made me love and UNDERSTAND MATH. his style makes you actually see math in the easiest way possible. drop lowest quiz and hw. if u only miss 2 classes he will bump ur grade up if u are close to a higher letter. he cares so much for students. Lots of extra credit too in class. take him!
So difficult class generally, but he even made it worse. I'm a solid A student. Only got a C in this class so far. I got 3.7/4.0 it's because of this class. so regret that I was taking. My major is mathematics and never hate math before. But boring and fast lectures. and the teaching style worsts in nova. Don't take him or get C or won't pass.
IMO one of the best math profs at NOVA. VERY organized; uploads all class notes for your convenience. Webassign HW due every Sunday, but it's light and mostly just reinforces lectures. Make sure you do the quizzes (most are online anyway), the graded HW, and the exam study guides and you'll be fine. No surprises on exams, pretty straightforward.
Never explains anything. Practice exams are nothing like his tests. I got Bs up to calc 3 and am now failing, take someone else to save your gpa.
Do not take this professor for Calc III. He makes the material ten times harder than it really is. Very fast and skips material in his lectures. The homework, quizzes, and practice test WILL NOT prepare you for exams. If you take this class, ignore the professor and read the book. Otherwise, take a hard pass.
He is very knowledgeable about calculus. However, his teaching style is not for everyone. He is not lenient to anyone. You have no chance to retake your tests or quizzes once you fail them. The practice tests just cover 70% of what you will see on the actual exams. It is hard to get an A in his class.
Pretty difficult, definitely going to retake with another professor. Teaching style is fast. Lectures consist of talking for the entire portion right up until its time to leave.
Take another Professor, save your gpa. Its rough.
The Calculus series is a difficult. People would rather blame Professor Nefissi rather than their failure to study. All lecture notes with examples on how to solve problems are posted online for review. Study and do practice problems form the textbook on your own and you will succeed.
By the 6th week, we were still in the first chapter. The rest of the semester was spent playing catch up and rushing through every other chapter. Quizzes and homework were easy but would recommend another professor if you're not great at math.
Has never responded to a single email. ever. Good luck if you need to reach him anytime outside of class.
I took his 173 in fall of 2017 & 174 in spring of 2018. I indeed appreciated his knowledge. His class was not easy for sure but it's worthy. I was always the top in class bc I studied and practiced a lot after every class. I came back here to review him because I am taking cal4 at GMU and his teaching was so good and I still know everything
Great Professor! He did assign a lot of homework, but it is math. If you don't practice, how can anyone pass? That's why I will take him again, practice makes perfect, sometimes of course. He gives extra credit during lecture!! It will help your grade go up! I was at a low C for a while, the extra credit helped me get to a B!
Don't take a 5 credit summer course if you struggle at math. This course moved fast and it's up to you to learn the material on your own. That aside, Prof. Nefissi is a master at his craft and cares about his students. Pretty straight forward class. He makes it clear what the expectations are and will not surprise you.
Worst professor I've ever dealt with. For starters, he never responds to your emails. I had to send multiple emails just to grab his attention. I don't usually have a problem in this subject, but he made the lectures extremely complicated. If you really care about your grades and want to pass this course then DON'T CHOOSE PROFESSOR NEFISSI!!!
Worst professor on the planet. Never responds to emails. Horrible communication skills. Refuses to work with students. His classes are nothing but him yelling at an empty audience. You can't understand a word he says because he talks so fast and his handwriting makes everything impossible to read and understand. This class will ruin your transcript
Calc 3 was very easy. I have an A , however he is really bad at teaching. He doesnt teach you how to solve any problems. Instead, he expects you to already know how to. Why would I come to a lecture if Im supposed to know everything about Calc 3 already? I honestly would take another teacher the class is simple but he is very condescending.
God this professor does not do anything but talk to himself. He barely responds to emails, he yells at us for not knowing what to do when we barely learned the concepts, and overall he's just a salty person. If you like strict teachers, go to him. But even for a strict teacher, he's one of the worst I had.
MTH-167 The professor does not convey new concepts clearly at all. He will brush by new terminology and expect you to pick up on it later. My class was entirely through zoom and the only way I passed was by rewatching and slowing down his lectures. Expect to learn most on your own.
This Professor has truly helped me understand Calculus. this was my second time taking calc so I was really nervous but I am glad I did. He is detailed and will break down each problem. Tests are equivalent to the practice tests and he doesnt try to trick you on the exams. Study and you will be good!
Just dont do it. Second time taking Calc. Just dont do it.
Overall an all right professor, he has his pros and cons. Cons are his teaching style could be better and he uses a lot of bad third party sites. Pros are there wasn't a huge amount of homework like some other math professors give and he dropped our lowest test, quiz, and homework grades at the end of the semester.
Prof Nefissi was a really good professor. He sometimes expects you to know things right away. However, if you listen to his lectures, do the homework, and practice, his tests are very manageable.
MTH167 was not an easy course so I dont think it was his fault that a lot of us got bad grades. If you want easy A then dont take him. Although I got an A on this class I am not taking him again.
Worst professor ever. He never responds to emails so be mindful. He NEVER does. He is a horrible teacher, if you want to pass you have to get a tutor. Whenever someone gets an answer wrong during class he gets mad and snappy, very disrespectful. Do not take him if you want above a C in math.
I wouldn't recommend this teacher. He may not be trying to act this way, but he's just rude and inconsiderate to his students. He doesn't allow any late work (not even in the first week of class) or extra credit. He knows math, but he seems to teach just to get it out of the way. Doesn't go out of his way to help his students.
This is actually the worst teacher I ever had the first week of classes he told us if we didn't understand what he was reviewing we should drop our majors I'v never been told that by a teacher a person who's supposed to support and guide us to pass which he definitely did not I would not recommend taking this class unless you like to teach yourself
Mathematics can be taught easily. I like math but was stressed with his teaching style; fast, unorganized. I learned a lot from other professors on youtube. He also puts questions on quizzes or tests that was not taught during class. I agree with other reviews; 'dont take him if you want an easy A', 'He expects you to know something right away'.
A quick and difficult class. I found the homework to be somewhat tedious and unrelated to the tests. Sami is a very fast teacher who expects the class to get it on the first try. He will regularly ask students to answer questions. While this sounds bad, he grades very kindly and offers a lot of extra credit. A strong 3.5/5.
Professor Nefessi is a very lazy professor. He expects you to know everything. You ask a question and he'll put you down. However, a lot of his exams are classwork and homework related questions.
I saw the reviews and decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. He gives extra credit. Helped me go from a C to a B. If you ask him to go over something he will. Sometimes has an attitude but I liked him. FYI he used Aleks (for those who dont like that learning tool). Overall hes not bad. If you pay attention you should be fine.
Just dont do it
Dont take him
I don't think Professor Nefissi even understands the calc 3 material. There were instances in class where he would get confused doing a problem, his answer solutions for practice tests are riddled with errors, and he even misgraded exam results because he incorrectly solved the problem himself. His lectures are confusing and rambling.
I mean he is good but for me it's hard to learn through his teaching style. The good point is he will drop the low grades to increase your overall grade.
Do not take him. I learnt more from youtube than his lectures. He goes over the material very quickly. Assigns lots of HW on Cengage. His exams are hard and there were some questions that he himself stumbles on. He gave questions from the sections that were not covered during the lectures. The only good thing was that he dropped lowest test grade.
Biggest complaint is no partial credit on exams. Aside from that his lectures are alright. I found it best to use the slides and practice problems he gave to learn the material. He provides lots of practice material for students. Bi-weekly hw, weekly quizzes, study guides, etc. He responds relatively quick to emails and grades quickly as well.
Prof. Nefissi gives you exactly what you need to succeed in this class and later Calculus classes. He does not believe in "busy work". He is always available in office hours to clarify specific concepts covered in class. I would definitely take other classes with Prof. Nefissi.
Professor Nefissi was very approachable when I had an issue understanding some specific calculus concepts. During office hours, he explained and solved sample questions. Don't expect office hours for basic algebra questions, though - for those you need a tutor.
Do not take this professor for an online course if you don't already know the material or are good at self-learning. No lectures, just a powerpoint and textbook reading to learn material. The textbook he chose for calculus is cengage, which is trash. There is also a lot of homework due every week.
I took Calculus1. As long as students follow his guides, and complete assignments, passing the course is guaranteed. His explanation is very easy to understand. And his handwriting is very clear. When I read textbook, I had difficult time to grasp the topic, but after his lectures, I was able to solve problems like I were a math whiz.
Great teacher, he will drop your lowest test grade. Offers extra credit at the beginning of class. Uses lockdown browser+ camera on as well. Open notes exam. Good teacher, need to know material before going to class he will assume you have reviewed it on your own. Attendance not mandatory, after third class attendance is extra credit.
Online tests, gives zero partial credit. Our class average on every test was a low 70. He is a good math prof, in the sense that he prepared me for calc 2&3. But snappy, rude, and will certainly call you out for being wrong. He is not the worst, but there are definitely better calc profs at NOVA. Only NOVA course I didn't get an A in.
Horrible Instructor. Not at all considerate and will kick out students without the slightest consideration.
Professor Nefissi is an amazing mathematician, but he is NOT a good professor. His lectures are just practice problems for 3 hours while barely explaining how to do the math and his thought process! Unsurprisingly, the average for the exams (50% of our grade) was in the 60s! I'm teaching myself at this point! However, a few students do like him.
The entire class agreed we must learn math on our own. This man cannot teach. On one test, the HIGHEST score anyone earned was a 58/100 and it was open note. How bad of a teacher must you be for the entire class to fail?
Lazy professor and all over the place - does not remember which chapters the test will cover and makes hw due weeks before we cover the material. He assumes everyone has memorized the syllabus and is not clear about when he will post assignments. No late work credit and he just is not able to teach while his notes are all over the place.
He is OK. His explanations confused me a lot, so I had to work a lot to comprehend all the material. He is willing to work with students to drop grades. Since my class was a hybrid he didn't explain really why we did stuff just how to do it. He is a nice guy, but not the best teacher. My class did have open-note tests which helped me a lot.
This Prof just does not know how to teach. He doesn't actually explain anything! We basically taught ourselves during his class. I'm just now realizing how poorly he taught us since my current Calculus class is the complete opposite! The reviews are so odd here since so many people either love him or hate him. His class is very sink or swim.
Very knowledgeable professor but isn't the best at explaining the material. He does allow open note exams and a formula sheet for both the midterm and final. If you put in the work then you should be fine.
He's a nice prof but I feel like he's not really fond of slowing down and explaining the materials though. You'd have to take midterm and final in person even if you take the zoom class. There's hw & quiz every week. But if you do pre-study or take time to understand the lecture, you'll be doing great. He takes attendance for extra credits.
He's a decent teacher. Classes were engaging. TESTS WERE HARD! ESPECIALLY MID TERM AND FINAL. He does drop your lowest test, hw and assignment. Tests were mostly similar to studyguide. There was a lot of homework due every week on WebAssign + Canvas. He did patiently answer everyones questions in class even silly ones which I liked.
Not everyone should be a teacher, Sami is a great example of this.
I had this Calc 3, 10 week course in the summer semester of 2024 with this professor. Take this class if you can confidently teach yourself w/ the Textbook. He did very little examples. He has a very heavy Indian accent and awful writing skills, using a mostly cursive. The class I took did NOT give partial credit with only 3 exams and a final Exam.
Professor Nefissi was amazing! I took him for all 3 Calc classes, and I will admit, physical classes were better than online. Though it was a HyFlex class, coming in everyday improves his perception of you, and he dropped our lowest everything, which picked up my grade. Amazing at explanations, and I think everyone should take him in person!
He is a nice person, but doesn't explain anything. Do not take this class if you are so/so on math. He barely leaves time to explain his calculations. The class will only be good for someone who is good at math, otherwise good luck.
You're better off taking an asynchronous calc class than taking it with Professor Nefissi. He's a chill person but not the best at teaching. I did a lot of self teaching from youtube. Tests were hard. This should be your last option.
Professor nefissi is a great teacher and very professional. If someone doesn't understand something he will gladly go over it again but he always emphasizes that this is a past paced class and if you're absent, it's hard to catch up The study guides are very helpful and exams always have 15 questions -except final. Lots of work but would recommend.
Professor Nefissi's Calculus class is challenging but rewarding. The tests are tough, but he allows open-note exams and provides a helpful formula sheet. Engage with the class, use unstuckstudy for study prep, and you'll do well.
Professor Nefissi is great. He offers clear notes, extra credit, drops lowest scores, and manageable homework. I took the HYFLEX class for VT credit and kept up easily. Had an A most of the semester but dropped to a C after skipping the final. Taking him again for MTH 265! Just know he doesn't give partial credit.
Professor Nefissi was amazing !. He would gladly explain any questions asked. His exams are open notes; he drops the lowest score of the multiple tests taken. Since it's a fast-paced class, you need to attend the classes; it would be difficult to catch up if you're absent. Keep in mind that you need to practice the questions that he gives.
