He has hard tests. He writes his questions very ambiguosly. But he usually makes up for that with his grading procedures. He is a fun professor but can get upset.
I love Brother Clay! His classes can be tough but he will go out of his way to help you succeed. A very good teacher, I loved him!
He expects you to know your stuff, but will help you every step of the way!
Awesome professor! I enjoyed his classes and teaching style.
Dr. Clay is a fine instructor. He is clear in thought and topic. He is also highly motivated concerning the subject. His vigor and style are endearing to the study of psychology. I strongly recommend this professor…
Brother Clay is awesome! Great sense of humor and always willing to help
He is a teacher who is willing to take the time to help you out. He expects you to do your part and his classes can be challenging. He is a good teacher to have for students who are serious about learning the subject.
Brother Clay is the best! Not only is he my teacher, but he's also my advisor.
good lectures because he's funny and willing to explain or talk about anything you have to ask. tests are hard if you don't read or study. definitely a great class though, especially if you're interested in psychology.
Brother Clay is an excellent teacher. His class is very interesting and fun to attend. He lets students ask a ton of questions. He tells a lot of funny and relevant stories that enhance his lectures. His tests are difficult. The material is easy, but his questions are unessisarily tricky. Study hard, expect to learn a lot, and be ok with a C grade.
he's Hilarious!! No homework, one quiz a week, one test every two weeks. If you read the chapters and study, you can get an A. He makes class very entertaining. Total study time is about 4-5 hours a week for an A. I highly recommend this class!
It was a dull book and a hard class. I think he did an ok job considering the book.
Brother Clay rocks!
Clay's a mixed bag. Sometimes class is relevant and helpful, sometimes I wonder, "why the crap are we doing this demonstration?" Some activities seem like filler. The grade is only tests and quizzes, you don't have to go to class if you don't want. If you want an A, you must be a good test taker. Test questions are tricky, unnecessarily so.
Brother Clay is a great professor. He really knows his stuff and is so funny. His classes are never boring. He teaches a lot out of the book. There are open book quizzes and tests only cover 2 chap at a time. He is highly recommended.
not the best teacher you can get. all the test questions are confusing and repetitive he is funny but class time seems irrelevant all he does is say word for word what is in the book. i wouldn't take him again.
he is ok, but not very sypathetic. used lots of online things which i didn't like uses the book alot, but also does a pretty good job of keeping classes fun. I learned most of material outside of class on my own though
Great teacher. Makes things very easy to understand, straight from the text. He'll also throw in some extra goodies every now and then that relate to the topic and are fun, but aren't need-to-know for tests. You don't need to come to class, but he's great for helping to understand, and he's just really fun and interesting!
He doesn't explain things very well and expects you to teach the class. I went to go talk to him about something and he was very defensive and not very helpful.
I really don't think he knows too much about what he's teaching. He reads directly from the textbook. And his tests are really hard. Even with 3-4 hours of really concentrated studying, you're lucky to get a C. And the paper is really hard, and he's not very good at explaining it.
He is really cool, makes the class participate and enjoyable, he is very funny, there is quizes every monday but they are open book, his test are kind off hard but if you read the chapters you will do fine, i love him he's the coolest person ever and he always curves his test.He jokes around alot, and knows his stuff, and fridays are usualy fun day,
Brother Clay is so awesome. His class was kind of hard but he was such a awesome teacher and he is so funny. It was a good classroom experience.
He does not teach you anything! He expects you to know all the tiny details out of the book, but in class he just makes tons of stupid jokes and hardly ever even touches the subject matter. He doesn't even write his tests, so he has no idea what he is supposed to teach you. Basically, he needs to go back to school and learn how to teach!
The class turned out to be harder than I expected. Attendance is a waste of time. His lectures were interesting, yet irrelevant to the tests. I think I would have gotten a higher grade had I spend the hour studying the book, rather than listening to his lectures. Tests are tricky! Quizzes are easy. I ended up with a B.
he is awesome!! its hard, but if you study and do the tests, then you will ace it!
THIS CLASS IS HARD, NOT THE TEACHER! One thing is consistent in all of Dr. Clay's classes; you basically have to memorize the book to do well in the class. As a person, he rocks. He is as helpful as you need with papers and stuff, but as far as tests, no hints on what to study. This is really hard subject matter, so don't blame the teacher.
Brother Clay is Awesome. I really like the discussion that our class always had. The things you need mostly for the test is in the book but he has powerpoints that go a little more into detail and that are on his class website which is nice. Brother Clay is so funny and is not to serious. Hard class awesome teacher.
Bro Clay is awesome. i agree with the comments before me, psychology is hard, period. dont blame the teacher. the class in my opinion really wasnt that difficult. i got an A- after putting in an average amount of effort.
As a professor, he is honestly pretty useless. He doesn't write the tests, so he has no idea what is on them and doesn't teach accordingly. By the end of the semester there would only be like 5 people in class because he just didn't teach you anything and nobody trusted what he had to say because the book would contradict him a lot.
I loved Brother Clay. He is a great man, who loves his students. His class was hard but, he is willing to help you.
The class is all based on the text. There is an online quiz for each chapter and an exam every two weeks. They can be tricky so read each chapter, and you'll do fine.
Entertaining teacher, tests are difficult, need to really study the text. Going to class is not very beneficial, only a couple test questions covered in class.
I really didnt find the class that hard. you really have to study the text. i got an A- and put in about an A- effort so i was satisfied. you get the grade you earn, in my opinion... i thought he was a good teacher.
He doesn't really teach. He calls his tests GRE preps. They are way too hard for the material covered. Nice guy but does not bother teaching.
Brother Clay is such an awesome person and you learn a ton in class and from memorizing the book for his exceptionally hard tests. If you have the time to put in hours of studying, you can pull an A, but his tests are extremely tricky.
I think everyone on here is a bunch of whiners! i was so scared to take this class because everyone says its so hard but I got an A- and all i had to do was read the book and take notes, not that time consuming. there is no busy work, presentations, or lame group projects so i loved this class. bro clay is also way nice. who does these bad ratings?
Loved this class and want to take more classes from Br. Clay. He isn't into all the group mumbo-jumbo that so many of he pofessors are here and if you read the book its so easy to understand. he also lets you make up stuff if you miss, just make it up within a week.
Hardest tests ever! He is very fun though. Read the book and memorize it and you will be fine. Ha!
I have taken two classes from him, and I've gotten A's both times. The main thing you need to do is memorize the book, or read it at least twice. Classnotes aren't completely useless, but I wouldn't sweat it if you had to miss a lecture. People who think he's easy are fooling themselves. His test are detail-oriented, but he is fair in curving.
Three words to live by: Memorize the book. Class was ok, but any new material that is not in the book probably won't be on the test. Go to class if you want a show, or if you want learn about what is in the book. Great guy though.
This class is so hard! He does not teach for his tests!! Going to class is a waste of time! I would run away run far away!!!
Let me just explain it like this: Brother Clay is a wonderful person. As a teacher... not good. This class was hard! He doesn't make his own tests and doesn't really know whats on them. My class struggled the whole semester and even if you memorize the book it does no good. He hates to lecture so you wont learn anything in class. I taught myself
Great guy but not so great at teaching. Cares about his students but it's almost useless going to class. I didn't really learn anything but from reading the book. Test weren't too bad but I felt like it was kind of a waste of time.
Brother Clay ROCKS! He may be hard but you really learn a lot in his class. He is really interested in the students learning and he takes the time to get to know everyone's name. It's true that he doesn't write the tests but he is aware of everything that is on the tests and prepares students accordingly. If you
Listen to everyone else... memorize the book!! I got the highest grade on almost every test and I did it by MEMORIZING the book. When you do your Chapter outlines, be super thorough and write every detail and then memorize it... if you have time for that, you'll ace it no problem. The tests are all curved. Class rarely helped.
Whiners! Give me a break, I'm an accounting major and pulled a simple A- in his class. It was the least time consuming course I took. READ the book, duh, and actually put in some time to study from your notes and you'll be ok. The tests are difficult because psych is ambiguous, but if you read and took notes then you can easily pull a nice grade
Good teacher! read the book and listen in class and you will do fine
I loved this class! He is such a fun teacher and you can tell that he really enjoys his job. The class does take a lot of time, but I didn't really find it to be that hard. You just have to study and read the book.
Brother Clay was a greta professor, and psych 350 was a very hard class! Make sure you study a lot for the exams, because the exams aren't really what you talk about in class, but class time does help clarify things!
Bro Clay is a nice guy, and tries to be entertaining. However he is a pretty bad teacher, and doesn't go over most anything on the test. You can pull a C easy but his test are frustrating. Nice guy terrible teache, poor test
Brother Clay is one of the nicest people on earth. This class is interesting and I always looked forward to going to class, which is weird. Unfortunately, the tests are horrible. Class lectures are hardly helpful at all for test material. If you want to do well, memorize the book. Bro Clay means well but he makes it hard to get a good grade.
I loved all of the classes I took with Brother Clay. He is super kind and willing to talk to you about your tests. I honestly had to spend time reading every word of the chapter and writing and outline. I got A's in all of the classes I took from him doing that. Loved him.
Professor Clay is a great teacher! My suggestion is to read the chapters before class and take notes on them in order to prepare for the lectures. People say his tests are hard, but if you read the text and listen to the lecture you will be fine. On all the tests I scored in the mid 90s and I would only study for about 20 minutes before each test
Bro Clay is by far the BEST teacher I've had at BYUI. Yes the tests are hard, but not impossible. He is challenging, but you learn so much more this way! You basically have to memorize the book, but class time helps clarify all the difficult concepts. Class time is so much fun with his humor. You only won't like him if you're not willing to work.
Brother Clay is fair and kind if you do your effort. He made me laugh every class and cared about how I did in the class.
Fantastic teacher, he pushes you because he believes in you. If he gives you opportunities to be involved in the department outside of class, take it. Great learning experiences that you can put on your resume.
Bro. Clay cares about his students and likes to keep us entertained. He was very helpful when needed and open to giving out of class advice. Lots of material on the tests are only covered in class. 80% of grade was on exams so study the class notes and weekly assignment questions.
He is a great teacher. The tests are 80% of your grade, but he curves the tests. There isn't much homework in the class. Even though the class is hard I learned a lot, and would take another class from him.
Bro. Clay is a Great guy! His lectures are fun. The tests are a bit hard but they are fair. You need the textbook because that's were most of the test information is from. Very little homework which I liked. Tests are heavily weighted with fair curves. He is always willing to take his personal time to help students do better. He is kind and fair.
This is the second class I've taken from Professor Clay. His tests are hard. Very hard. But read the textbook (which is one of the few I actually enjoyed reading) and study with people, and you're golden. He doesn't take attendance, but I went to every lecture I could. He really makes class fun.
Everyone is correct to say the tests are so hard. I love Brother Clay as a teacher, he knows his stuff, he makes class interesting, the textbook is interesting but the tests are brutal. STUDY STUDY STUDY. I got into study groups and put so much time into that class.
Brother Clay was one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. He cares about what he's teaching, and he cares about his students. He's entertaining to listen to. There are questions to answer on each chapter, and an article review before each exam, but it's the exams that get you. Study, go to class (you'll want to), and you'll do great.
He is an amazing professor who genuinely cares for his students and their success. He teaches the course in a fun way and encourages you to do your very best. The course is a difficult one. 10% of your grade is questions on each chapter, 10% is a biweekly analysis of a research paper, but the kicker is 80% of your grade is exams. Study hard!
Brother Clay is hands down my favorite professor! His tests are difficult unless you study for them. They are based on the reading. The tutor was helpful. Brother Clay makes class time engaging and interesting. He genuinely cares about his students.
Favorite teacher at BYUI!!! I had him for Social Psych and Psych 380. His lectures are very fun and interesting! Definitely read the textbook. The tests are tough and are worth 80% of your grade but you'll be completely fine if you read and go to class.
Tries to make class fun. Lots of lecturing. Tests are very tough but there's usually a 10-15% curve so if you do decent you'll do great in the class. Do the reading, go to class, and review your notes and you'll be fine. The comprehensive is surprisingly easy so don't fret. Take the class, it's fun and relatively easy if you do the work.
Brother Clay is genuinely a good teacher, but this class-setup isn't the best. If you're serious about getting an A, read each chapter twice. Tests80% of your grade. To put that in perspective, if you have 100% till the first test, then get even an 89 on that test, it drops your grade to a 90%. Ge cares about his students, but content is TOUGH.
His class is very chill until you go in to take a test. There aren't any quizzes, you just have to do a few basic assignments. I love it, because then you get a lot of time to actively learn the material that is taught. Bro. Clay is a very cool man. Be prepared to study hard, this class is honestly one of my favorites! It is a must-take class!
Bro Clay is great at expanding on the reading material. You have 5 short answer questions to answer for each chapter, and an exam every three chapters (75Qs). Study the vocab and topics from the book alongside the powerpoints, and I recommend having a study group too. There are 5-6 exams, and they are not very difficult if you studied consistently.
Loved the lectures, but the textbook is tough to swallow. Definitely read and review consistently before exams. Assignments are super helpful to understand and apply the material being learned, just make sure you read the directions carefully. Get a good study group going with 2-3 people and you should do alright. He typically curves the exams too.
Brother Clay really cares about his students future success. The reason why his test are so hard is because he wants us to be prepared for our future careers. This is a very important class and very important things to learn. He is the funniest guy. If i ever walked into the class in a bad mood it was hard to leave without a smile on my face.
Bro. Clay is very kind to every student and makes an effort to get to know each one. His tests are ridiculously hard and weighed too heavily. Lots of material on test not even in the textbook. Test questions have several correct answers, choose best one. I studied an average of 10 hrs a week for his class and still only got a B. I would take online
Brother Clay genuinely cares about his students and is really funny. His tests are hard but if you attend class and ask questions he will go out of his way to make sure you understand the material. I highly recommend him for psych classes.
Brother Clay is by far one of the best teachers I have had. He is very personal and likes to get to know his students. His tests are a little challenging but they are doable. He is an amazing teacher and an even better man. I will definitely take more classes from him
I would more than happily take another class from him! He makes class very fun, and takes the time to answer questions students may be struggling with, no matter how long it takes. He also makes every single student feel welcome in his classroom. He is more than a teacher, he has become a dear friend of mine.
Fantastic professor, but requires effort. If you want an easy A, don't take it. If you want to be ready for graduate school, do.
His class is not easy - in fact, if all you care about is an A, don't take it. If you want to LEARN, and your primary concern is actually becoming competent and proficient in psychology, TAKE HIS CLASS. He doesn't baby you, instead expecting you to work to earn your grade, but instead tries to prepare you for true advanced learning and grad school.
A great professor that really tries his best to make sure his students learn.
I loved Brother Clay. He is honestly one of the best teachers that I have had at BYU-Idaho. You can really tell he cares about each and every one of his students. He works hard to learn everyone's name and makes sure he personally says hi to every student who comes into class. Also if you take him, make sure to ask him to do a kart wheel for you.
Pretty easy class. Just have to read the textbook. There are few things in the lectures that were not in the book. Overall, you don't need to go to class.
Brother Clay is great! His exams will kick your trash and the class prep quizzes are long (expect 2-4 hours each chapter) but they help. Class is always fun and entertaining with him and he makes topics and concepts memorable. He does get off topic but thats because he allows everyone who raises their hand to talk which can be annoying at times.
Brother Clay is amazing. He really cares about his students and his lectures are always interesting and engaging. His tests can be pretty difficult, but not as bad as everyone says as long as you study. I would absolutely take another class from him again.
Brother Clay is a very personable teacher. He likes bonding with his students by getting to know them and fist bumps. He takes the time to answer questions, no matter how long. He likes to make sure his students understand, but they must participate for him to know that. He also knows how to get a class laughing by just being authentic and funny.
Bro. Clay is a wonderful man. He truly does his best. However, all of his classes are set up in the same format, and they're extremely difficult. The assignments are fairly easy, but the tests are stressful and never what you expected. I wanted to cry every time I took a test, because I never felt prepared after hours and hours of studying.
Brother Clay is one of the most caring professors. He is hilarious and so sweet. I learned a lot from this class that I can apply to real life. The assignments weren't that tough but the exams were very difficult. The questions were super specific and it's like you have to memorize the tiny facts in the textbook that seem irrelevant.
Bro Clay is a great professor. If you study for the tests (don't cram, actually study for them) and read the textbook (they're easy to read/understand), you'll do fine. They're really not hard or tricky. His tests are also always curved (unless the class average is unusually high). It's very easy to get A's on all other assignments.
I loved Brother Clay! He is so funny and engaging in the class. I took social psych with him over zoom because covid but he still kept the class interesting
Absolutely loved Brother Clay, he is super funny and genuinely cares about the students. His exams are a little hard, but if you pay attention to the posted power points you'll be ok. There's short papers twice a week that help buffer out the exams if you do badly. He also curves and occasionally cancels class.
Brother clay was an amazing professor. He made class fun and chill but still very informative. By far my favorite class. The exams are a bit difficult, just write down the learning objectives each week and take notes based on those and you will be set. He has a stimulus package so if you want to redo an assignment you can as well as extra credit.
He gets distracted very easily in class and doesn't stay on topic for long. Super nice guy though! His tests are absolutely ridiculous. I did exactly what he said to do to pass the test and I still struggled to get a good grade. He does curve exams which is a perk. Lots of small assignments that are pretty easy to get done.
He grades the exams with a curve, but the exams were extremely hard for this class. I don't think we had a class average above a 75% on any of the exams this semester. About 80% of the grade comes through exams, and the questions were worded in a way that you could pick two or three answers depending on the way you read the question. Did not review
Brother Clay is one of the best professors ever! Not only does he care about his students and makes an effort to get to know them, he is super passionate about the subject of the class! He is always willing to help in any way! And on top of all of this, he is super fun! I think he makes at least 6 jokes during every class :) for real a good one!
I went to his office hours and admitted I am really struggling in class and he said "hmm, yeah, that sucks". The in-class material does not follow the test at all, so when the test comes around you don't know what to do. The class is 95% blunt memorization of vocab words, no concepts or actual learning is done. Just blunt memorization of vocab.
Brother Clay is one of the best professors I have ever had at BYUI. He makes class enjoyable and makes an effort to connect and get to know all of his students. His tests are hard, but it makes a world of difference if you use the tutor and study the learning objectives. I highly recommend him. He's the best!
This is a hard class, but Brother Clay does his best to prepare his students for the exams. The tests are hard, so you have to put in the work and read the book, use the tutor, and complete the learning objectives. He makes class so much fun and really connects with his students. If you want an easy-going and relatable professor, go to Brother Clay
I first took Bro Clay in the Spring of 2020 so it was on Zoom. He did a wonderful job at getting to know us even though we weren't meeting face to face. The material for the class is very interesting and he makes class fun by bringing in a lot of examples to explain the concepts. He's so fun and caring and one of my absolute favorite professors.
This class is difficult just because of the textbook, but there's no other Motivation textbook that covers the topic as well as the one Bro Clay uses. He loves his students and he does all he can to help us succeed. The tests are a little tricky so going to the tutor and doing the Learning Objectives are encouraged. Clay is the best!
Brother Clay is super understanding and gets to know his students well. He has the hardest exams I've taken, so study hard for his classes. He is very understanding of circumstances and will help you. Great teacher, interesting lectures, he has everything going for him except his tests. You will need to know the differences word for word with Q's.
I graduate this semester and brother clay is my favorite teacher I've ever had. I love how he teaches; he cares about his students, he makes class and the material engaging. Highly recommend.
I just felt my time was wasted. The 5 slides that he takes an hour to go through can be done in 5 minutes. He tries too hard to be funny/relate to students. Attendance isn't mandatory so after a few classes where nothing changed I never showed up. If you spend class time and just read the book, then you'll do fine on the tests. It isn't that hard.
Brother Clay is the best teacher I have ever had here at BYUI. He genuinely cares about each of his student's success and insights. He makes lectures very interesting and is hilarious. His tests are difficult, but if you read, pay attention in lectures, and study you will do just fine. I hope that I can take more of his classes in the future.
Brother Clay makes class fun and it's easy to stay engaged because of how much he makes his students laugh!
One week I was having a really hard time, and he not only gave me the time I needed, but listened to me, and let me cry in his office without judging me at all. He is one love of the best teachers I have ever had. Put in the effort to study for exams because those are most of your grades. They are graded on a curve, and he offers extra credit.
He is kind and caring and is willing to work with you. His exams are the hardest things, and dont connect to the readings or assignments very well (which he is working to fix). Do all your assignments and go to class and tutoring. Quiz yourself. His classes are difficult, and require time. However, they are rewarding too. His presence is joyful.
Professor Clay is a very funny professor, who is great at relating to the students in class. He goes over everything you need to know for the test. The tests can be difficult, as some questions are pretty specific, but he gives you everything you need to succeed.
Brother Clay is one of my favs--he cares a lot about his students and his lectures are super laid back and fun. He's a goof. Homework assignments are super easy and he provides extra credit, but tests are pretty dang hard. Tutoring got me my A!
I don't get why people love this guy. He treats the classroom like it is stand-up comedy. He went over pretty much nothing in the chapter. It's the first week but this is enough to tell me I should not be in this classroom. Next week is the next chapter and I have learned nothing aside from what I taught myself from reading. Worst class experience
Brother Clay made this class so much fun! He is such an incredible professor who cares about each of his students individually. He loves his slide transitions and it just makes the class so much fun. It is a difficult class and his tests are weighted at 65% of your grade, but go to tutoring and participate and you'll pass.
Brother Clay has been one of my favorite teachers for many reasons. He is easily the funniest professor I've ever had and makes class super fun to be at. It is a pretty homework-heavy class with 2 or 3 two-page (easy) papers every week. I would just say be ready to put some good work in with reading/writing, go to class, and you'll pass just fine.
Brother Clay is awesome and a great individual; however, he doesn't prepare you very well for exams. Class is surface level, and exams are more Indepth. Whenever challenged in class, he struggles to answer questions. He recognizes some information on the exams are misleading but doesn't change a thing. Not sure he would do well in his own class.
I felt like the hw was the most useful part of this class. Lectures restated what I had just learned in the textbook- I didn't feel like I was learning anything new or being prepared for exams. There is minimal guidance in what to study for exams, and you only get to see what you got wrong on them once immediately after.
Brother Clay seems like such a cool dude outside of class. But class does NOTHING to prepare you for the exams. He goes over the slide show word for word, which is the textbook word for word, but the test is application based.
My biggest advice for this class is prep for the tests. They are harder than it seems and even though it seems like common sense you will get things wrong. In class the slides are what you go through and brother Clay answers any questions you have. He usually follows the flow of the students. He knows his stuff but you have to ask.
Brother Clay is an amazing dude and is very kind, but I won't lie, if you don't need this class, DO NOT TAKE IT. He is a very funny, personable guy, but his classes do not prepare you for the very hard tests he offers. The assignments are cake, but the tests take up the majority of your grade. Again, he's a great guy, but the tests are very hard.
Bro. Clay is EASILY my fav teacher ever. I've taken him 3 times now and we're buds. He is the funniest teacher I've ever had and makes class so fun to be at. I got pregnant halfway through the semester and wasn't able to make it to a lot of classes, but he was so willing to adjust to my needs to help me still make it through the class. Take him!!!
