He is really nice guy. He gave us a short essay home work every week, yet these were good practice for mid and final for me. His class is easy to get better gread, because he counted our attendance as points in my gread!!!
This was an excellent professor. I will take another anthropology class next year.
Classes are mostly lecture based which is good 'cuz he's a good lecturer. Assignments and exams are all about thinking critically, but he reminds you that a fair portion of academia is about your ability to BS so remember to have fun. I highly recommend his classes, don't listen to the first poster s/he's full of it.
Last year, I took his class, and still remember I had a good experience of cultural anthropology. He is very nice and smart. Through his insightful lecture, I could answer the questions I had wanted to know about society and culture. If you are interested in culture, I highly recommend his class.
Awesome! Highly Recomended!!!Very funny and smart. On of the best in Foothill!!! Knows alot about cultures and the world around. You won't be disapointed!

He's funny, smart, and keeps the class interesting at all times. I took anthropology to fill a requirement and never thought I would enjoy it so much. I really felt like I gained valuable knowledge through this class. Highly recommended!
By far, the best professor I've ever had. Great teacher, and he truly inspired me on world views.
Great teacher, great material. His lectures and homework were very easy, but the tests' were a bit hard.
Great teacher, is well prepared, his Anth2A class challenges you to think beyond the teaching material.Recommended!!
Teaching style is professional and well developed. He is recommended for anthropology classes.
he is cool.
I was please to have taken this class. I enjoyed the teaching style and the discussions.
Professor Connell is an awesome teacher. He likes to have group discussion and will put you out there so make sure to do the work. I would definitely recommend taking him for Anthropology classes.
very easy class, very relaxing lecture, and you will have fun! he is very funny, he even gives 20% of you grade for attendence! mid term and final are easy, and not much work, but you can learn more about anthropology at the same time!
LOVE HIM, LOVE HIM,LOVE HIM! Great interesting class, and he's cute and funny in his own little way. Take him,I'm sure you'll feel the same.
Terrible. He rambles during lectures and is pretty incoherent, like he didn't really prepare for them. Easy grading, so go to get an A not to learn about archaeology.
Professor Connel is one of the best professors at Foothill hands down. Interesting lectures/ discussions. Gives great examples, specially from his personal experience. Thought provoking lectures. A fun class. Midterms are a challenge but not too hard if you do the reading.Other easy points to boast your grade. He's a very smart and fun teacher.
Connel is a mediocre lecturer. That being said he is a great teacher, and an all around great guy. In class lectures can be a bit boring or slow but he really makes sure his students understand. His assignments are fun. Hes always happy to help students out. Just an all around great guy.
Prof Connell is awesome! He is overall a well-rounded dude who makes sure everyone gets the stuff he's teaching. I learned a lot and enjoyed the class.
I took three classes with Connell this quarter and didn't get boring. 2A catered a lot of interesting discussions. What is expected of you is clear; when you go in, you know exactly how much work you should do for the grade you want. Laid-back, well-rounded dude who knows his stuff. :]
He's entertaining, loves to teach. It's impossible to get a hold of him e-mail or phone wise. Tests are extremely hard. Interesting class but you HAVE to pay attention. Little homework. Map quizzes. The essay sucked.
He's a great teacher. He does lecture a lot, but makes it interesting, and he is also very funny- just be sure to take notes, because a large percentage of the lectures is included in midterm & final and for this reason attendance is also important. Doesn't give too much homework and when he does it's relevant and not "busywork." Highly recommend.
Hands down one of the coolest and funniest professors you will ever meet. Not only will you learn a lot but you'll also be highly entertained throughout the quarter. You won't regret taking this class.
I went into the class just because it's a pre-req. After one class with Connell, I'm now doubling with Anthro. He's knowledgeable and teaches you how to view the world in an unbiased manner. You learn to appreciate the world around you better after taking his class. I don't think anyone can teach anthro better than him.
Super enthusiastic in promoting Anthropology. Very laid-back. Tests in MC&Short answers. Not difficult but very broad. Do the readings. A lot of writing for homework although high quality is not expected. Just do the work and an "A" will be no problem.
His class is so easy! I learned so much. Everything we do is interesting. He's also extremely hot, if you're into old guys. Take him!
I screwed up in the midterm but still get an A. He is very engaging. Just go to class and take notes. He tells you what will be tested in the final. Read the book. Homework is easy. Always come up with new ideas in class discussions. Love this class.
Very interesting class, the topics are based in current cultural issues. Dr. Connell is crystal clear in his lecture. Excellent teacher and great class material. I highly recommend taking this class, you will learn a lot and get a good grade.
Funny guy. Keeps the class engaged and entertained. Do all the required reading you have an easy A. HW is a must as well, but they are mostly reader responses and he always gives full credit on those as long as they're turned in. He also gives a ton of pop quizzes but he tells you about them ahead of time ;) I'd take another class with him.
i was really expecting an A, but i got a B+, his class wasnt easy as what everyone said. He gives alot of work (homeworks, readings and all) but hes fun, although most of the materials he taught could be found in the textbook, yet, come to class bcause he gives so much videos and clips about the related materials.
good teacher, fun, and keeps you entertained, but he means business! do your work!
best professor , get ready for lot work! he is very helpful and explains material like crystal clear. get ready to involve in class activity and don't go late in the first day , you'll know why!!! very very nice professor.. you will love the wonderland of Anthropology with Dr. Connell. Do the assigned homework easy 100 points(i missed two) darn it!
mr. connell is an awesome teacher but be ready to do work. the class was definitely harder than i expected it to be but i still really liked it. as long as you keep up with the readings and come to class you should be fine. he makes class enjoyable and really keeps you engaged. i wish more teachers were like him.
Amazing teacher, sometimes talks really fast or crazy but he never strays away from the topic for too long. Slightly disorganized but the class is interesting and the way Connell presents the subjects are intriguing. He knows how to catch interest.
Sam made this REAL for me! I'd not been an Anthro major & I'm still not 100% for sure, but his class has given me a lot to think about. He's made me passionate about what HE'S passionate about & I love that he challenges me. He asks for creativity, so be prepared if your a linear thinker. Do the homework & reading & you'll be fine!
He is a really laid back teacher. He explains the concepts well and interacts with the class. The class was very interesting, and it didn't hurt that he is HOT.
Friendly professor, but be sure to not slack off. Pay attention in class and keep up with the reading. This class was definitely harder than expected, but everything was fair. He certainly makes Anthropology interesting. I definitely recommend him.
Sam cares about ideas and methodology, and you can present them how you want. Don't worry about your hand writing or English so much. If you don't like Anthropology, you should not take his class to leave room for people who want to study!
I've taken A LOT of classes with Sam. He's by far one of the most entertaining and informative teachers out there. His class is open to any ideas you have, and he makes participation fun. Sam sincerely wants his students to pass, and he offers a ton of extra credit. His classes mimic much of the work load at UCs. He prepped me well for UC Irvine.
Great teacher, not many like him. He actually puts the concepts together rather than stating random facts as all other teachers seem to do. He makes the subject interesting and ties everything together. If you pay attention in class, you will get an A.. The tests are mainly from notes and what's talked about in class but still have to read the book
I have taken at least 3 classes with Sam and he is by far one of my favorite teachers at Foothill. He is pretty laid back and is willing to help if you ask for it. At times he can seem a little disorganized, but overall he is very entertaining and very helpful.
He is such a cool teacher. His class is interesting and fun. I didn't really have an interest in anthropology before his class but I do now, thinking of minoring in it. If you do the simple homeworks, the readings and go to class you will pass. I TOTALLY recommend his class. I'm sure you will have an interest in anthropology after!!
Take him! Awesome professor, he really wants his students to succeed. There's a lot of work load but it will be interesting. If you read the book and lectures you should be good.
Understanding, caring and really wants you to pass. Always show up to take notes because they're helpful for his tests. Homework are easy but requires a thoughtful response.
Easy and cool teacher. Just have to do your work. Lectures are so interesting and he makes learning very fun. The only thing is, it's hard to write notes because he goes fast sometimes with his power points and he doesn't post them. For tests, you just need to know the things he repeatedly talks about. Great teacher!
It is hard to find a professor with so much passion.
I'm currently taking his Anth 1 class online and it has been tough. He doesn't e-mail or respond back. His online lectures and videos are boring. He takes his profession way too seriously. I'm sure most of us are just taking this class for GE, like I am. There is a lot of discussion, homework and participation. Be prepared to dedicate lots of time.
I honestly thought I would fail this class. Reading is heavy, as is participation. I liked not having any tests, but at the end I think it might have been better to at least have some quizzes because the final at the end was ROUGH. However, he was pretty helpful and did give plenty of feedback, and I think he knows that Anthro isn't for everyone.
He teaches very interestingly and the materials are amazing, midterms are not that hard.. as long as you pay attention and read at home, you'll definitely pass his class!
I'm currently taking Physical Anthropolgy with the professor. He is by far the best teacher I have had. There is a lot of work involved in this class, but it feels very rewarding as I'm learning a lot. The thing I like most about Prof Connell is his extensive feedback when grading papers. He really makes you think about your answers from all angles
He's a very funny guy. I was half-way interested in the material and he does a good job at keeping you fully interested and engaged. The science projects were annoying, but overall the class was enlightening. He does a good job truly giving you an education, esp on an online format.
Sam is one of the best professors I've ever had! I took 3 classes with him and he really sparked my interest in anthropology. He really cares about the students. He grades on a 500 point scale, and usually has 10-20 points of extra credit. His (2) tests are intimidating but he makes them that way to prep you for transferring to a UC.
Really fun if you are into it. Pretty relaxed class. Gives 5% EC. 40% grade is test, 20% essay, 40% HW. Average grades for class: test 80%, Essay 85%, HW 100%. Total A-B+ Showing up to lecture is enough to get an A if you have pay attention. I never even bought the book. IF HE WRITES SOMETHING ON THE BOARD, ITS ON THE TEST.
I've had him twice (physical and cultural) and it was a great experience both times! He inspired me to major in Anthropology and now I'm transferring to Cal so go Connell!! :)
Great Teacher, Great class
At first I took this class to clear some GE requirements but it was so good I'm changing my major to anthropology! The online course was hard since you need your own motivation to get through the material. Connell does send out frequent reminders and has lecture videos so that was a big help. The book is your best friend in this class.
He is actually the best prof at Foothill. His tests are straight forward, all you have to do is take notes because he tells you everything in the lectures. He's clearly passionate about what he does and he's funny. Definitely an enjoyable class.
He is incredibly laid-back. His class is easy to pass so long as you do everything. He does ask for a lot of reading, but a lot of what is answered there is answered just as easily by common sense. He has an assignment due every other week and one project.
Great professor and super enthusiastic. His classes go by so fast and he tells a lot of great stories. His tests aren't really hard as long as you study for it thoroughly. Make sure you do the hw and assigned readings they're easy points.
This professor is very helpful and encouraging. He responds to emails quickly and assignments are clear and organized. Tests are easy as long as you keep up with the material.
Great teacher, I had him for physical anthro and I immediately switched my major to anthropology. However, I just had him for Prehistory (Anth 3) and he assigned an insane amount of work. A "reaction" paper is due each week but many of them end up being challenging essays. Be prepared for work
I liked this class even though Im not a huge fan of anthropology. We focused a lot on analysis and understanding data rather than memorization. Some assignments were fairly long, but I found myself having to shorten my answers because there was so much to talk about. He was available to help and very enthusiastic about this subject.
Mr Connell class is exceptionally interesting, the only problem I have is that his exams are very linear and by the book. But that aside, highly recommend.
He is great professor. Class and grading is true to the syllabus. Lectures are entertaining and tests are easy. Office hours are helpful and he is very encouraging. Really nice guy.
I love this professor. He genuinely wants you to succeed. Plus, he's pretty entertaining and he makes class interesting. If you show him that you're putting in the effort then he'll look out for you. I would definitely recommend! He made me love anthropology!
He takes his profession way too seriously. If you don't write perfect papers you basically fail. Doesn't reply to your emails or lets you know how you are doing in the class. Do not take him online and save your GPA.
he is all over the place, you constantly switch from different sites to turn in homework. very confusing. he is very disorganized. do not take this class it is not worth lowering your GPA
His lectures are lively and entertaining and his tests are fairly easy. He isn't a tough grader but wants to see effort. He is friendly and always willing to explain when you have questions. Great teacher.
at first I thought this class would be hard, but it was easy later on. No Exams except for the final exam is in class fyi!
This man changed my life.
Sam is hilarious! He's very engaging and sparked my interest in anthro. I wish all my classes were taught by him. His casual easy going attitude is refreshing and makes me want to come to class! His assignments have purpose so you don't feel like you're wasting your time. If you take a couple notes on readings and participate, tests are easy.
Sam is by far the best professor or teacher I've ever had. He roasts the class regularly but never maliciously. He's super chill, laid back and entertaining. I've always hated any form of science throughout high school but Sam has actually done such a solid job making this subject interesting that I've switched my major from psychology to anthro.
Prof Connell is pretty great, very laid back and responsive. Always answered my questions clearly. I do wish the class and lectures were more organized. He transferred all work from Google drive to Canvas before the class ended but the way his lectures are written are confusing. Final is on campus, inconvenient for some. Great guy and hilarious!
Connell is great. He is funny and truly cares about your success. The way he sets up his class makes it very hard for you not to pass. If you get to know him a bit during office hours, it will benefit you in the long run.
Great Class! At first I was overwhelmed, but Prof Connell makes it work! A couple short lab reports, read about 1-2 chapters of the text per week and 1 weekly required disc post. Super easy grader and deducts very few when you make mistakes. He does happen to repeat himself a lot and the lectures can get long but overall easy! TAKE HIM
Took him for Intro to Arch and it was great. Lots of reading from the book he assigns, the tests are based on the readings mostly. His 'lectures' are mostly him talking. There is little information on his slides sometimes so beware. There are a few larger paper type projects and workbook assignments that take some time as well. BUY+READ THE BOOKS
Great Professor. Definitely always have good feedback when it came down to the work we would submit. Would definitely recommended to other students!!
He's my new favorite professor! I've always been intimidated by anything science related, but he made the subject easy to take in. He's very passionate about anthropology (and archaeology - his main field) and his enthusiasm (and stupid jokes) make the class super interesting and enjoyable! I'm switching my major to anthro because of his class!
Easiest class for bio GE. Took the class online as a GE requirement, not the easiest class but not hard; workload was about 5hrs/week which is not bad for a 5 unit course. Beware the final is remotely proctored which really threw me off since I figured the final would be open note. I still got an 80% on it without ever opening the textbook.
Record his lectures, and if youre stuck on homework ask him about it immediately aside from that hes an easy going teacher. I believe there is a small penalty for late assignments. He s a very kind instructor
Great teacher with engaging lectures. Encourages students to speak their minds. He assigns heavy reading, but will over each concept in the reading in further detail in class. His assignments are partly based on the reading and partly critical thinking questions (e.g. "Why do you think peanut allergies on the rise and how can you test for it?").
Usually dont rate any professors but Connell is a gem!! I took his online class and boy was there a lot of reading. I did all his required assignments but failed horribly on his final and still got an A! Took his summer class and there were 4 small projects, weekly discussions, homeworks and one final. Take him! Seriously Im so grateful I did.
He makes the class so funny. I loved the way he thinks about the world. He thinks assignments as a joke, which is awesome!! Enough extra credits, easy A, funny lectures, awesome instructor. Loved his class.
The final isn't in person anymore, now remotely proctored. Highlight of the class was the Primate Paper, where you go to a zoo and observe primates. Other work generally consisted of the usual discussion post + writing assignments (no MC quizzes!)
This was an online class, but I really liked Prof. Connell. There are a lot of assignments, reading, and discussions but it is easy to get full credit if you put in the work. The exam was proctored and you really need to study to do well on it but it is possible to have a B- before you even take the exam.
Prof. Connell's class was engaging. He is passionate about the material and often tells pretty wacky stories. He is easygoing and his teaching style creates a fun classroom environment. There is a lot of assigned reading. His tests are pretty straightforward and the assignments encourage critical thinking from students.
This class was a TON of work for 6 weeks, but so worth it. Prof Connell is so passionate and enthusiastic about anthropology and I'm here for it! the final exam is proctored online through Proctorio, so make sure to read the textbook and go through his lectures thoroughly to do well. There are weekly discussions, debates, and homework.
great guy makes lectures fun n entertaining. If you take notes and listen in class you'll find the midterm n final easy.
Love this man, super fun and lighthearted, prepares in-depth lectures and slides, easy to follow along, and very forgiving and open-minded with assignments. Took his lecture and lab simultaneously and very easy to complete both. I felt like I actually learned quite a bit from his explanations and assignments, really makes you think critically!
There is a lot of reading, and a good portion of just memorization. Connell really wants students to understand key concepts and apply them towards homework and projects. He gives solid feedback, so you know what you can do to improve future assignments. Just try your best and I think a B is guaranteed at the very least.
Prof Connell was so light hearted and fun. The class was not easy though there are a lot of work to be done. Considering it is a one unit lab class the workload was heavy! However the prof is so fun and wants you to pass.
This class was so much fun and I felt like I learned a lot. There are weekly debates, participation, homeworks, and small projects but there are not bad at all if you put in the effort. He really cares about his students' success during these times . Don't hesitate to email him if you have any questions. Thanks for an awesome class Prof. Connell!
Took the course during the summer amid COVID. I had a lot of fun and the content was very interesting. There's weekly discussion posts, debate posts, small science projects, lastly final project (primate paper) and final test. I recommend starting the primate paper and small science projects early. Final was long but easy if you read everything.
Great professor, super easy and interesting class to take. Lots of busy work but very easy. Offers extra credit. Professor was not organized, it seemed as though the professor was on vacation and teaching was a second choice, but overall an easy class.
*Values diversity* Very passionate about Archaeology. Clear grading info and reading list provided. Must get all textbooks, old editions ok. Provides .pdf of out of print workbook. Lots of reading, assignments aren't hard. Responsive to email. Caring but busy. Allows late work but don't take advantage of it. Appreciates honesty in discussion posts.
Really nice prof. Took Anth instead of Bio and I am very glad I did. There are a couple of assignments per week and no quizzes but 1 final. He is really nice and a generous grader. I would take his class again if I could!
Prof. is truly the best. He gives so much feedback and his assignments are fun. He allows late work but please don't leave it to the last minute, it will really bite you in the butt: trust me, I did this, and it was not fun do all the work at the end. Grades leniently, always there to help, and super fun to talk to during office hours. Take him!!
I never took an anthropology course before, and professor Connell was an amazing choice. The reviews on here are right, this is a great professor who grades lightly. The course consists of discussion posts, semi-lengthy homework's, and small science projects. These assignments were easy, but super interesting, great course.
I took this course last quarter and even though it was extremely scattered, VERY heavy on reading both long lectures and textbooks, required lots of long documentaries and videos to be watched, and more...I still highly recommend his class. His passion for anthropology is infectious and the material was just fascinating.
Prof. Sam gave me an understanding of antho, also inspired me. Really knowledgeable and passionate professor. Really nice person, someone that actually treat students as friends and care about students.
Was way too much for me. Workload and reading is heavy. Great feedback on the assignments though and it was very interesting. Didn't feel very compassionate when I had personal hardship. But if you do the work you're good. Don't expect too much help. Don't leave anything to last minute. And if you have other classes that are heavy it's impossible.
Loved taking Sam's class. He is so chill and cool and literally such a great teacher. I had him for Anthro Lab and the work was a breeze. We just had to show up for class and do the labs with a partner. He was funny, nice and a caring teacher who replies to emails super fast. Just an overall super chill and easy going teacher. You'll love him!!
Most exciting classes you'll ever take. He is very forgiving of late work, gives excellent feedback, and wants you to succeed. But also, he makes you work hard for it. It helps that he is very handsome, so I forgive him for all the homework he made me do just for a one-credit class ;) If writing doesn't come easy for you- take something else.
Just read the book and study will be fine
Prof Sam is a very good Prof he is honest about grading and very good feedback. Just read a lot and take a lot of notes.
I had him for the regular class and lab, his regular class was pretty easy but this lab was workload HEAVY, it was difficult to keep up, if you are thinking of taking the class, take it in person or find another professor
I learned a lot from this course and didn't realize I would enjoy it as much as I would. The professor just wants you to engage in the material and put effort into the material. There is a bit of reading but it is super important to know about our human origins. The class was fun, not a waste of time and I appreciated the effort from the teacher.
I have no complaints about his main Anthro class, where the workload and readings there were manageable. His grading is also very lenient. The late-start Anthro lab class of his was a far different story. Two labs a week with multiple essays over a 6 week period made the class feel like a 5 unit class instead of the 1 unit class it is.
Super cool guy! He's very lenient and understanding. Lot's of work for class but it's not hard stuff, just get it done and don't fully BS the work and he'll give you full credit. Highly recommend, I would totally take him again!
Nice guy overall. I took the honors version of this, and when grading an essay, he look for a well supported argument or claim, as someone who had no idea what I was doing. I got As on summative write ups (exclusivly for honors only) and the primate paper. Some concepts he misses and appears on midterm/final, make sure you have good notes.
Super fun teacher to be around, a genuine guy who cares about students and their success. He is so chill.
I like him. He is a nice teacher. But I found the midterm and finals are very hard.
I think prof Connell is really enthusiastic about the topic, he is a lenient grader, he will try give you a 100% on everything possible. however I think this course is a bit over stacked for just merely 1 points, I think it required more time than Anth001a which is a 4 point course. other than that, he is great, you really learn.
Great Professor. Prof Connell is dedicated to students & gives lots of feedbacks. Though too many assignments for this 4 credit course. He cares for his students and gives them a second chance. Provides extra credits as well. His assignments are well planned and his feedbacks have impact across life. I am thankful that I took Prof Connell's class.
Prof Connell is a great teacher who genuinely cares about student success. His course has a decent workload, but engaging with the material and using study tools like Unstuck study makes it manageable. Would recommend taking his class.
He is a really chill professor, just do your homework. DO HONORS. it's extremely easy. also regarding exams, he asks students to put questions on a list so he can choose from those to ask us on midterms. DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS. He's really kind and understanding!! Amazing prof and friend.
He's a chill prof, and as a procrastinator, I APPROVE TAKING HIS COURSE ESPECIALLY HONORS. HW is easy pea-zee. He wants you to succeed, so COMMUNICATE with him if you need extra support whether it's tutoring, questions on the hw, etc. I recommend doing honors, the projects he assigns are VERY interesting & fun!!! I promise y'all can do it!!!
He's good at lectures, and people seem to really like him. Straight forward classes, straight forward grading. His sense of humor and the way he talks to people, particularly the way he talks about gender dynamics, really made me angry. An anthropology professor of all people should be of the power dynamics between him and certain groups.
Sam's awesome. I took his 8am Anthro 1a class, and he's there to wake you up. His lectures are fun, fast paced, and includes lots of jokes. The course is SUPER easy, just do the homework, and you'll be fine. Primate paper was fun as well. Pro Tip: Do Honors! It's 2 super simple 2 page (double spaced) assignments for an extra 100 points total.
The best tea
The best teacher I've ever had!
An insane workload for a 1-unit class! Way more reading and assignments than my 5-unit courses. Feels like he's piling on extra just because it's online. Many of us are working full time while in school—we shouldn't be punished with extra work just for having to do online classes.
If want to spend 20 hours a week on a one unit lab class go ahead and take his lab class if not I would avoid at all costs. Not one unit amount of work more like a 4 unit class.
Good professor. He lectures in class and assignments are (mostly) posted online, lectures aren't bad though just reviewing info on slides or watching videos, easy to follow. I really recommend TAKING NOTES on the slides, even though everyone else may not be it will help you study for the midterm and final. Assignments are easy if you put in effort!
Do NOT take this 1-unit lab online. The workload is equivalent to a 4–5 unit class. Constant papers, huge weekly lab assignments, time-consuming projects, and even FIVE assignments over Thanksgiving week. Completely unrealistic for a 1-unit course.
INSANE workload and final for a one unit lab class. AVIOD this lab class!!!!
Samuel assigns an overwhelming amount of homework. There are at least three pages of papers to write every week, sometimes even two or three, or one nearly ten pages long plus a shorter one of about three pages. He sets bizarre requirements for the assignments, and even if you try your best, you'll only get a barely passing grade!
You'll need to spend over 10 hours a week on assignments. His course includes two exams, doesn't provide any study guide. He'll just tell you the weekly assignments, the books you've read, all of which require review. You'll need to spend about 5h a week reading. Even with your best efforts, you'll only get a 60% score on the exams.
Sam's a realistic prof and a great guy—wants everyone to get an A & accepts late work up until the final if you need it. He's very no bs & just cares about people participating in class, showing effort in work, etc. Tests now closed note but way simpler so just go to class/pay attention. Would take more of Sam's classes—anthro majors got a good one
