Take this as your intro level religion class. Don't need any prior knowledge of Buddhism. Everyday is a lecture, but interesting for the most part. You get a one question quiz each class that's super easy and basically just an free point and for him to take attendance. There's a reading due before class but lectures don't relate to the readings.
Incredibly interesting guy teaching an incredibly interesting course. Easy if looking for a religion credit, but still really engaging.
I took this class as a religion requirement and I would recommend. The class itself barely has any required work other than short nightly readings. The tests and quizzes are very straightforward and there was no additional writing or projects. Prof Grimes is very passionate about Buddhism so that made the classes very interesting. Overall easy A.
kind of boring but he has passion for the subject so he makes it interesting by sharing his personal experiences. He basically tells you what will be on the exams so it is easy to prepare for. I didn't have to spend much time at all on this class, and hes an easy grader. He lowk sassy sometimes but its pretty easy.
Professor Grimes was great. He is very passionate about buddhism which makes it a lot more interesting to learn about. There were only 2 quizzes, the midterm and final which were incredibly easy. There is a reading every day and then he gives a 1 point "quiz" everyday that is super easy to get right if you pay attention. Overall, very easy.
Such a cutie pie. Very passionate about Buddhism, became a monk for a bit, and knows his stuff. 1 question quiz each class on the lecture, a midterm and final that are one page: multiple choice, open ended, & fill in blanks. HW is reading & annotating. Super chill guy and makes the class interesting. Take notes on the powerpoints and you'll be set.
Honestly the worst prof I've ever had
I mean it was legit the freest A i think I have ever had, bro legit doesn't care about his kids at all. Hes mad weird but if you do the bare minimum you will get an A. These other kids just don't know how to study it appears
take his class only if its your last resort.
Worst prof ever
Worst prof ever. You have been warned.
Worst prof ever, the horror stories are true
don't listen to these ratings, he's literally the best. such an easy class, best religion credit if you need one, theres like 2 tests that are made to make you pass. there is no way you can get lower than an a
hes awesome, dont listen to the reviews, the class was super insightful and grimes is the absolute best TAKE HIM!!!!
I took his class and it was boring but interesting. It was easy. We had reading homework that was very easy and all we had to do was ask a question on the reading. We only had a midterm and final and we do a jeopardy in class before and go over everything you need to know. It was a very easy and chill class. I recommend taking it.
he's a great teacher, easy homework, and the midterm was multiple choice and two pages. take him don't listen to these trash reviews
Disregard all the awful ratings they're fake - Samuel Grimes is actually a good professor. Although he is quirky and sarcastic at times, he is very understanding and very passionate about Buddhism. The class was so easy though, he was such a chill teacher - not hard at all. definitely recommend for religion.
Not sure why this man is getting review bombed because anyone who took his class knows he's a chill dude. To give you an idea of his character, when I was out of class for 2 weeks due to personal things, Prof Grimes allowed me to makeup missing homework and gave credit, which is more generous than the average prof imo.
Despite the fake bad reviews, Prof. Grimes was overall a good professor. Class is typically lectures, with a pop quiz in the middle but it's always easy if you had been listening to what he said that day. Overall, it was a good class for the religion requirement and Buddhism is a really interesting topic!
Professor Grimes was an easy A. Funny and knowledgeable about Buddhism.
Professor Grimes is a really good guy and honestly a great prof! He's extremely interested and passionate about Buddhism and has traveled a lot to study it. Class is easy to digest and understand if you do the readings. Quizzes every class period but if you were paying attention they're easy to get right. I'd take his class again!
This class was a very easy way to get your religion 1000 level credit and would be very hard to do poorly in. There are daily quizzes in the middle of the lectures but are normally just one word answers.
I loved this course
Prof. Grimes is very passionate about what he teaches. There is a 1 question pop quiz every class based on the lecture that day, so as long as you pay attention, you should be fine. The midterm and the final are both just one page front and back. There is plenty of resources given to study from. You should take this class.
Weird but chill, just keep up with the assignments and you'll get an A.
Pretty straightforward class, just do all the Perusall readings and make sure to come to the exam reviews!
Dont listen to the fake reviews, Prof. Grimes is a great teacher and is very passionate. There is a one question pop quiz every class, but its usually just 1 word answers. The Midterm and finals are both 2 pages and extremely easy. If you want to complete you religion requirement in the easiest way, and learn something cool TAKE THIS CLASS!
This has been my favorite class at FU so far. Prof Grimes was such an awesome professor, he has so much knowledge about Buddhism and it was so fascinating. Everything is explained so well. There are no tests during the semester, only a midterm and final, and he prepared us very well. I TOTALLY RECOMMEND THIS PROF!!
Great Teacher
Super awesome teacher. Even if you don't care about Buddhism at all, take this class for your religion requirement. Professor Grimes makes the topic super interesting and clearly cares a lot about teaching. Easy daily quizzes and some light reading but nothing hard. Provides AWESOME review for the midterm and final. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!
.His class is easy, there are quizzes every class about what we learned that day but if you pay attention theyre not hard.
Take this class for intro to religion course. Super easy, sometimes heavy on the content each class but for final and midterm gave us all the information on what will be potentially on the test. Quizzes are every class based on his lecture that count toward grade and class attendance.
Sam Grimes is a great teacher. I was originally hesitant on taking Buddhism as a required religion, however each class was engaging (sometimes was a bit boring) but taking the class is definitely worth it for an intro religion course. There are quizzes based on his lecture almost each class that are worth your grade and attendance for the class.
Professor Grimes's class was hard at first, and after not doing too well on my midterm, Professor Grimes gave was super accommodating and helpful for how I could have done better. Yes, his quizzes can be hard, but he genuinely wants people to do well and it tells! Take him!!
He gets harder every year because he got in trouble for being too easy. Quizzes everyday based on the slides so that's also how he takes attendance. His tests are nothing like they were on the Review day so make sure you to notes throughout the whole semester. Only 2 tests and its one page long with mc, matching, and definitions.
Prof Grimes is the worst Professor Fairfield ever had, he paid students to write positive reviews of him here, please don't take his class, he is under investigation.
Professor Grimes is really bringing down the reputation of Fairfield. He has no interest in students' development or welfare, he is obnoxious and unkind, and has does not seem to have much of a grasp on his material/ subject matter at all.
Same as the others really, I'm just really sad he has ruined Buddhism for me, I really wanted to like this course but he ruined it.
He is not as bad as everyone says, it's an easy course, he obviously doesn't care about his students and the rumours about him having a drug addiction are probably true but if you want easy credit take this class, it's like phoning it in
He really needs training in how to teach, I actually don't blame him I blame whoever hired him
Please don't take his class, he is honestly the worst prof at Fairfield, and he has been in trouble at other institutions too. He paid students to write positive reviews of him on here but there is a petition to get him removed.
Definitely not great. Super sarcastic
Honestly, he got worse as time went on for this class. He contradicts to what he says and makes this class a whole joke. He thinks he's funny but he's actually rude. Don't take him.
So rude and so sexist. I don't know if the rumours about what he did at Oxford are true, but since coming to Fairfield he has just been really unpleasant to deal with. Kids are trying to switch out of his class. He doesn't seem to know what he is talking about and his pop quizzes are totally random.
Literally rhe worst professor I have ever been taught by.
He is honestly the worst academic at Fairfield, rude and unkind and not even knowledgeable about his subject
He's not as bad as everyone says, he obviously doesn't care about his students but he's quite into Buddhism as a topic so if you get him talking on it he would be ok. Lol don't get my wrong I wouldn't leave my child alone with him, but he isn't as bad as everyone is saying, I feel bad he is probably going to get fired.
He isn't that bad. It's gross how sarcastic he is and he is a bit of a perv on the female students, but he is also quite knowledgeable on Buddhism, and the pop quizzes are ok.
He's getting fired
Whoever is writing the bad reviews about how difficult the class is does not study or listen. Go to his midterm and final reviews and you get a 100 on the test. Quizzes can sometimes be unclear but most of the time he says the answer like 5 times before we get the quiz. Homework is commenting on a reading once a week which literally takes 5 minutes
He's alright. Not the best. Really rude.
He is a well known predator
He's definitely not great but not as bad as some kids here are making out
He's a gross person but the course is easy
This course is chill. The professor himself is the joke of Fairfield but the course is easy, simple quizzes, no drama.
Idk if this guy is still paying kids to write good reviews on here but let me just write this even if it is about to get deleted - do NOT take this guy's class. He's bringing down the reputation of our university and people paid good money to study here are getting palemd off with this joke of a guy.
loving watchig this guy get review-bombed, he is the absolute worst. ask the girls of Fairfileld, U of Virginia and OXford about his behaviour. he's notorious.
He's not that bad, he just doesn't care about his students
He's not that bad. But he clearly needs help with his teaching. His grading system is really confusing.
lol he's getting fired
Literally the worst prof ever, the horror stories are true
A disgrace to Fairfield. Remember don't just write the review here, sign the petition too.
Everyone needs to chill, he isn't the anti christ he is just a bad prof, it's getting out of hand
Worst prof ever, don't take this class. Honestly some of us wanna get our tuition reimbursed just out of disappointment.
Professor Grimes, what can I say about this guy? He's honestly a huge joke... there's quizzes everyday and the final and midterm are very specific on how you should study for it. I honestly have never had a worse professor than him.. he doesn't care about his students at all. Huge shame.
He thinks he's funny but he's not. He thinks he's smart but he's not. He thinks people like him but they laugh at him. He looks about 20 years older than he is. His face looks like it's melting. He is the worst prof any of us have had. No way does he have a degree from Oxford either. That's another lie. The faculty are literally investigating
Funny this is called Rate My Professor and nobody rates this professor
It's actually not a joke, people paid good money to study and we get dumped with this joke of a man, he is ruining our educational futures, kids are trying to switch out of class, so many complaints against him
He's not that bad. Trying to get him fired is taking it too far. Yeah his teaching is sub par and the pop quizzes are fairly arbitrary but he isn't as bad as some kids here are making out
He's definitely not great. He's rude and sarcastic
He is really awful, so rude and unpleasant and not even knowledgable about his subject
Idk what all these bad reviews are about this class was so interesting and easy and he gives extra credit for the quizzes that can sometimes be unclear. I was never once stressed about this class at all.
He is not as bad as some people here are making out, he is a bit lazy and rude but the course is quite interesting
He is so unnecessarily rude
So I never witnessed some of the behaviour other kids described and I totally take sexual harassment and assault very seriously but I had limited interactions with him so although I found him quite rude he is quite knowledgable about his subject, I don't want to say any more as maybe I don't know the full details about these allegations
lol nobody rates this professor
Worst prof ever, so ruse
I wouldn't take him again but he isn't as bad as people say
Would not take again
He is under investigation
It's actually not a joke, he is under investigation
So unnecessarily rude and aggressive, it is actually really upsetting
He is so rude and not smart at all
The pop quizzes are just arbitrary and his teaching is really hard to follow, he is sarcastic and rude, don't take him
He really is as bad as people say
Literally the worst prof I have ever been taught by
I think to be fair he actually needs training in how to teach, it probably isn't his fault, he doesn't know how to manage a classroom and he basically uses quizzes as a way to get students to teach themselves. That said, the course is of almost no educational value and I would warn others not to take it.
The most constructive thing I can say is I think the blame rests on the shoulders of those who hired him
He cannot teach, uses quizzes as a chance for students to teach themselves, half of the time it makes no sense. Makes jokes that makes people uncomfortable. Extremely unaccomodating... I have ADHD and I asked him to turn off the music (which distracts me) during the review session, declined and moved on anyways and played the music.
He is unpleasant and unhelpful and needs to be told there is more to teaching than pop quizzes
Avoid at all costs.
He is a hilarious professor who keeps his lectures interesting. Make sure to pay attention during class so that you can do the one-question quiz at the end.
The only people who would find him funny are other sociopaths. His inappropriate jokes make a lot of us uncomfortable. It is disappointing that Fairfield does not take student safety more seriously.
Pop quizzes do not equal teaching, a bad haircut does not equal being profound, getting high in England does not equal an Oxford degree, being inappropriate with female students does not equal funny. This guy has to go.
Don't blame him. Blame the people who hired him.
Avoid like the plague he probably has
His grading is arbitrary and inconsistent and the over reliance on pop quizzes makes the class tedious
The prof is the joke of Fairfield but at least the course is easy
He needs to be taught basic teaching skills and basic etiquette
Please don't take this class
This course had literally no educational value
It's a real shame he ruined what could have been a great course
I don't know about the allegations so I want to keep my comment separate from all of that and just speak from my own experience, but he really isn't capable of teaching this kind of course and I am surprised he was hired, he does have potential actually (the allegations aside) but someone needs to give him training in how to engage a classroom.
You could not pay me to take this class again
He just needs someone to tell him that there is more to teaching than pop quizzes
Please give this man training on how to teach, it is not fair to students
He needs to be taught how to teach and that his sense of humour is not appreciated
He is pretending to have a degree from Oxford
I don't know about the more serious allegations so I will just comment on my own experience- he isn't that bad and does have some knowledge of Buddhism but he is really bad at communicating ideas and he doesn't seem to structure his lessons beforehand. I do think he could improve with guidance but atm his class isn't worth taking.
No teaching skills and no people skills
He's not as bad as people say, he just can't teach
Worst Prof Fairfield ever had
He is a joke but the course is easy
He isn't difficult but the class has no educational value
He is pretending to have a degree from Oxford and his teaching is abysmal
