Señor Hernandez is by far one of the BEST spanish teachers I have ever had! He's extremely nice and does other things than lecture such as show videos and one time he actually brought in mexican pastries and coffee for everyone! He has a slight accent but his english is really good and he is extremely helpful. If you love spanish, TAKE HIS CLASS!
I completely agree with the first person who posted on here. Very helpful and clear teacher.
Very nice guy... wants to help you, but he has quizzes that are almost comparable to tests and tests almost comparable to a final exam. Has 3 writing composites (two of you which you can revise to get a better grade). Go to class and participate! He's a great teacher and wants to see everybody do well. I'd definitely take a hard look at him.
Honestly..the BEST spanish professor I have even had. If I had teachers like him in highschool I would be fluent by now. I wish I could take him for every future spanish class. HE IS AMAZING. Take him. Super funny, always keeps things interesting. Make sure you do the homework because it REALLY helps. He tells you what to study for the exams!
Ok, I have never felt the need to go on rate my professor but he is THAT good. I am legit sad he isn't teaching any other levels of spanish so I can't have him again. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN best spanish teacher I have EVER had.
I know that everyone has already said this, but Samuel was the best Spanish professor I have ever had. He cares so much about his students and just wants everyone to do well. His lectures are entertaining and helpful, his quizzes and tests are reasonable, hw grades are fair, and the written assignments are easy. Take him! Great Spanish Professor!!!
He is a good teacher! Lots of grades so you can't say there isn't oppurtunity to improve it, but his tests and quizzes are lengthy, however has good PPT's and group work to make up for it. The final was a bit ridiculous though. Do well on everything else and you'll easily get a B.
Lots of grades and plenty of opportunity to improve. Good class structure. Test are long and are really the only things you can't redo for a better grade. I'd highly recommend.
Do your homework because he checks it every week for completion. Talks a bit fast and sometimes is a bit over students heads. But if you work hard and care about the subject you can get a good grade.
He is SUPER nice and COOL. He loves to help out and answer any questions you may have. TAKE HIM! Even if you struggle in spanish, he lets you retake quizzes right after class and his office hours are super flexible. His class is not boring at all and rather really fun. He is just like a student and sometimes lets you out early too! TAKE HIM!!!
AMAZING teacher. Super helpful and absolutely hilarious. Will let you retake quizzes and actually gets to know YOU as a student
Best spanish teacher you could possibly ask for at a university. Lets you retake quizzes so you learn from your mistakes and improve. Tests are easy if you study! All homework is due on test day but there is not a lot. DEFINITELY take him if you can, you won't regret it AT ALL.
He's a fairly good teacher. He always asks the class to open the text book to a page but half of the time we don't even look at it. There is no index or organization in the text book. He is sometimes very unclear about what he's talking about.
Samuel is very fun! He uses the Supersite Website everyday, even on days when we don't have class. He lets you reset the online activities if you fail them though. Very hard not to do well, unless you don't like Spanish. Sometimes not very clear in explaining grammar. But a definite must take!
Such a great professor! Clear, concise, but still makes learning spanish fun and easy. very little homework and quizzes are done in partners! tests can be challenging, so you still have to study. pleaseeee take him! you won't regret it
Hands down one of the best professors. He is so approachable, kind, and helpful. His class flies by, perfect attendance is EC. Quizzes are partner and tests are comprehensive but doable if you study. Low stress class with the best teacher you could possibly ask for. He cares so much about his students. Not taking his class would be a huge mistake!
I love Señor Hernández! Such a sweet and helpful professor and he is really funny. All quizzes are with a partner and open notes. Tests aren't that hard and he lets you get points back for correcting writing assignments. One presentation for the semester and it wasn't bad. Take him he's so awesome!
Hernandez was AWESOME! By FAR my favorite professor this semester! He grades very fairly and his classes are a lot of fun. Even if Spanish is hard for you, you should still be able to get an A. He explains the topics really well, and you can always do test corrections. I highly recommend taking him :)
I really liked his 300 class. He gave us a lot of homework but it wasn't due until the test so it was a good study guide. However he didn't spend as much time on some of the more dense topics (like the subjunct. imperfect)which was a bit frustrating. Overall he's a good teacher and it's a great class though.
This guy is so nice and sweet! He is extremely helpful. The material is legit, but he will go out of his way to help you. If you ask him a question, even on a quiz or test, he will try to sort of give you the answer or explain it in a way that helps a LOT. He is funny and laid back. You have to do your work though.
My grade was an A for literally the entire semester. All his quizzes and tests are student friendly and you can do corrections for half the points. You can knock out all the homework in one weekend. The only time that I was even a tiny bit nervous for this class was (understandably) during the final exam. Other than that, it was smooth sailing
Professor Hernandez was a really enjoyable professor. We only speak Spanish so it gets you to think. Group quizzes and quiz corrections. Homework is due before the test. If you are up to learn Spanish, take him!
He's a great guy and wants you to do well. He's so funny and cares about you. If you go to all of the classes, you get extra credit at the end of the semester. He makes it fun and you can use your notes on quizzes and dictionaries on tests and quizzes. Great guy. Love him.
Professor Hernandez is awesome. Homeworks are all on canvas and he gives you 100% on each of them if you do them! Only two tests (midterm and a final) and he tells you exactly what to expect on both of them. Besides those grades, you also need to turn your notebook with vocab in it as well as one fairly graded presentation. TAKE HIM!!!
He's great. Really helped me through my first semester here. He's funny, very clear, and always ready to help you if you need it.
AHHHH I love Prof Hernandez!! He is the sweetest man and a great teacher! The class wasn't easy but he is always eager to help. I would most definitely take him again!
Hernandez is probably the nicest guy ever. There is homework but you do it all in class and it's due that night (remember to turn it in on canvas though). Only two tests and both were pretty easy, just use his study guide and bring a dictionary for the test. He really helped the whole class feel comfortable talking and I always understood him.
Hernandez was great. His classes were super easy and clear cut. He told you exactly what would be on the tests and quizzes and you could use your dictionary for all of them. 1010 would take again. Easy A.
Professor Hernandez was an extremely relatable and knowledgeable professor. He never makes you feel stupid when you forget a word, and he helps you when you're struggling. The tests aren't easy, per se, but they're also not insanely difficult if you study. The class was a fun experience and you really do improve your Spanish skills.
I felt like I learned more in the first few classes than I had learned in my entire previous semester. He actually wants you to learn the language instead of just passing you along the way my other professors did. He's great, plus he's super cute. You do absolutely need the workbook, but you don't necessarily need the yellow book.
Loved his class!! He makes it interesting and has a good sense of humor. There's 3 writing assignments (written in spanish), 3 tests, and 1 presentation (also in spanish). Sometimes he'll let you take quizzes home to do and can work with partners if done in class. Online quizzes are easy and can be taken more than once! I recommend taking him!!
Everything was in Spanish. Quizzes and tests are your grades (also a presentation) just study and practice; you will do fine!
Professor Hernandez is amazing!! SPAN300 was my favorite class at JMU so far, definitely take his class. Tests and quizzes are easy and you can take quizzes with a partner. Lots of extra credit opportunity, test corrections for points back. There is a decent amount of homework but it isn't hard and is very helpful.
The best Spanish professor I've ever had. He makes grammar interesting and fun. But be sure that you have a really good grasp on the Spanish language before you take him. He expects you to know a lot already. And don't ever use cellphones in his class.
This class was a lot of work. It was a lot more writing than I expected. 3 short papers, 8 journal entries (graded on completion), 2 oral presentations (very scary), 3 formal discussions with two other classmates. Those were your biggest grades. There were no tests, and he's a really nice, funny guy. Also, his grading for discussions seemed random
This is my second time taking him and he's absolutely wonderful. Very funny, very sweet, very helpful. The class has a lot of writing, but even the title says it's focused on writing, so that should be expected. Takes a good bit of work, but isn't super hard, and is totally worth it! I definitely recommend taking Hernandez. You won't regret it!
Pf Hernandez was a fantastic teacher. He is very clear and concise and the formatting of the class is structured well. There is a fair amount of homework so get ready but it is not that difficult. You will need to purchase the SuperSite code as well for the VHSL book. Definitely take him if you like Spanish or if you are just fulfilling the BA rqmt
Get ready to work. You need to put in serious effort to secure an A, the tests and quizzes are extremely tough. He's a very personable and funny professor, so the class is fun, but its definitely a step up from 232. Go to class, and use the textbook. Be prepared to study a lot, it was a difficult course. Lots of online quizzes assigned.
Very solid personality, yet he is an extremely difficult professor. Very harsh grader, tests were such a step up from 232, it was unbelievable. He's a nice guy, very personably, yet he makes this class ridiculously hard. Attendance is a must. And you really need to put in the time for quizzes and tests, review material like three weeks in advance.
Prof Hernandez was not specific on how to do any assignments. He expects all of his students to be almost fluent in Spanish in 232. He doesn't explain how to do the conjugations and how to determine which tense to use. He just gives you "hints" on how to remember them. He may be good for upper level classes but do not take for 232.
I never review anyone, but Hernandez is easily my favorite professor at JMU. I took both 300 and 320 with him. Both were difficult classes (especially 300), but he really recognizes when you are working hard, and if you ask, he will give you extra credit. 300 is a hard class, but I learned so much and he is a great professor for it!
FAVORITE TEACHER AT JMU. I have taken him for three semester in a row. He is hilarious, so helpful and made 320 a breeze. 3 compositions, 3 group talks, 1 presentation and tons of online quizzes and stories in the book. He is so kind, wants you to do well, and gives opportunities for MEGA points back with a "reflection of performance" @ end.
Hernandez was by far my favorite prof of the semester. The material is hard, not going to lie, and the course requires a lot of material to be covered in a short amount of time, but Hernandez makes it worth it. He is funny, lets you speak in Enlglish a good portion of the time, and really wants his students to learn.
One of the best teachers in the entire department! He is so nice and hilarious!!! I had him for 300 and 320. He loves his students and loves teaching! TAKE HIM!
He really appreciates and rewards participation, especially with the 4 graded conversations in class. There are no tests but there are 2 presentations, 3 essays, and 8 in-class journal entries. There's a lot of speaking and writing in class, but it's good practice.
Professor Hernandez is a great choice for this class! He is very passionate about grammar and works his hardest to make the content easy and manageable. The online homework can be tricky but is definitely not busy work -- it actually helps reinforce what you learned that week. I genuinely loved being in his class and would recommend it to anyone!
Hernandez is so adorable and he really tries his best to help you get better at Spanish. There's a good amount of hw but it's mean to help you and give you extra points. The grammar got really hard as the course went on and he was okay at teaching it but could be better with his notes on it. Overall, a great teacher TAKE HIM!
Sam is great - really knowledgeable and wants his students to succeed! four group discussions and 15 journal entries and three presentations. Overall, a good class to help with writing and speaking in Spanish!
Professor Hernandez is both an incredibly caring teacher and amazing at his job. He is clear with what he expects of you and he explains concepts very well. He makes you work for what you get but he is extremely helpful and an overall fantastic professor.
LOVED HIM! He is so sweet and my class felt like family. Online assignments but you have multiple attempts. Some papers but they are not difficult. Some oral presentations. No tests. TAKE HIM!!!
He is amazing and he inspires me everyday. He is absolutely amazing and will help you with anything and everything that you need to know.
favorite teacher at JMU so far. So nice and understanding, always willing to help. Great sense of humor. You will be pushed out of your comfort zone with talking in class, but it was worth it.
The most incredible Spanish grammar teacher you could possibly have! Grammar is my weakest point in Spanish and in this class it finally made sense! Hernandez is a dedicated teacher with a true passion for grammar. I had him in a 4 week May-mester class and even with a quick pace the material and workload was easy. I always recommend him to friends
It's an oral and written communication class so ya you're gonna write and speak a lot. One of the easiest classes I've taken, work is easy to do, gives multiple attempts for online "quizzes", and is super friendly! Of all my Spanish classes I feel I got the most out of this one. I wish he taught more classes b/c I'd be signed up in a second.
I took Hernandez for 300 and he is very open to answering questions. The textbook is required for his class, but I didn't use it much. However, you do need the access code for the online HW. For most of the HW, you have unlimited tries and for ones you don't, he'll open it back up for you. For quizzes, you have the chance to earn points back.
His tests were really hard and his Spanish is just not what I'm used to. Example: get ready to memorize a lot of phrases. Homework was ok overall but had a couple tough assignments.
Professor Hernandez is one of the nicest spanish professors I have ever had! He is so understanding and willing to help or give you extra time to finish compositions if you need. He is also very fair with his grading and instead of a final we had to complete a self evaluation. Would definitely recommend him!!!
The GOAT. Taking again for 320. Decently hard class but he makes it manageable. Don't need physical txt. but you do need to buy VHL txt for homework. Lectures are really interesting, as he is really interested in teaching the process of learning a language. You get bonus points for perfect attendance, but take him regardless. Love talking to him.
Samuel Hernandez has been the highlight of my JMU career as he greets me by my first and middle name, most of my friends don't even know what it is. He is excited to teach every class and my Spanish is where it is because of this man. DO NOT take this class if you do not wish to practice your Spanish through speaking and writing.
Hernandez is the absolute GOAT. He reads these so if you're reading this, you're a god. The material is very manageable. If you go to class and pay attention to what he is saying, you will do well. He has study guides for tests, but going back through his powerpoints and your notes from lectures also helps a lot. I highly recommend taking him!
Señor is my favorite professor @ JMU. Every day he entered the class with a huge smile on his face. Even if you're not perfect in spanish, he just wants to see that you're trying. Because of him, I decided to pick up spanish as a second major. THAT's how much he impacted my life. If you have the opportunity to take his class, count yourself lucky.
I loved Hernandez for SPAN 300. Super nice, approachable, and caring for his students. If you struggle in Spanish and see him in office hours he will help you a lot and really cares about your success. He's lowkey and being in the class is not stressful at all.
He's more of a concept teacher than specifics. It wasn't hard for me, but I'm good at spanish. He's a really nice guy, but if you struggle with spanish this may not be the best choice. Weekly homework takes like 30 min or less, a couple one page essays here and there, not much work.
Sr. Hernandez was an amazing professor and I would highly recommend taking him. He takes a while to get grades in the grade book however. That's the only criticism I have about him. Make sure you always go to class, he has an attendance policy!
He was so kind and warm every time I came to class. You can tell her genuinely cares. He breaks stuff down on the board for you and has no problem reexplaining when you are confused. He understands the difficulty of leaning a second language so he tries his hardest to make it easier for you. Homework was online and you have multiple tries to do it
If you aren't good at teaching yourself Spanish don't take this class. The tests are very difficult so start studying ASAP. The class didn't follow the syllabus very well and the class didn't have a whole lot of structure. Make sure if you don't understand ask for help because he is willing to help. There were 5 quizzes, 3 papers, and three tests.
Hernandez is an amazing professor who I've recommended to all my friends interested in taking upper-level Spanish. During quizzes and tests he clarifies instructions even if they're already pretty straight forward. 2 writing assignments and 2 exams (not including the final). Very easy to talk to to clear up confusion and knows his stuff
Okay, where do I begin? I love Señor so much! I had him for Spring 2020 when Coronavirus hit and he was so understanding with all of us and our situations. I don't think I would've done as well as I did if I didn't have him. He is always willing to reanswer questions and he is never judgmental if you don't understand something. Amazing man!
Hernandez is a good guy but not a good professor. I have never struggled with Spanish and have a 3.9 GPA and I had to work for it. All of the quizzes and exams are in lock down browser with camera. (It records you as you take the exam.) All of our class averages were in the 60's for quizzes/exams. He did not make class any easier due to covid-19.
He is definitely a nice guy but not a great professor. It is obvious that he means well, but his canvas is super disorganized, he barely teaches before he puts people on the spot to answer questions, and it is hard to study for his quizzes because he doesn't lecture enough to take good notes. Uses lockdown browser with webcam for quizzes and exams
Professor Hernandez is amazing. He makes sure that you understand what he is talking about and always goes above and beyond. Participation is key and he always helps students see how they can improve their Spanish.
Prof. Hernandez does NOT teach, and the things that are covered on quizzes and tests are completely random and NOT from the textbook, particularly vocabulary. The only reason I survived this past semester was because of independent study and the fact that I had an excellent prof. in the spring. You're expected to be fluent going into the class.
This is my second time taking his class and I love him. No textbook, no tests or quizzes, only speaking and writing assignments. Genuinely cares about students. Just show up to class and try your best at speaking Spanish and you'll do good
Amazing professor. Cares about each student and offers test corrections on all exams and retakes if wanted. Will help you if needed and overall is just really sweet and enjoys teaching. Answers emails quickly. Highly recommend.
He is a good person and is understanding. We do have test and controls but they arent bad and he reviews before we take the tests and controls. Personally, I really liked him and i would take him again.
Dr. Hernandez is AMAZING. He truly wants his students to succeed and understand the material. He is also one of the nicest people and I would take his class again without a doubt.
Prof Hernandez is an amazing professor. He's not strict on deadlines for turning in assignments which was very helpful. My class was small and we all talked and participated easily. A few group convos, a few in class essays, no tests at all. A very encouraging professor.
Professor Hernandez is one of the kindest professors I've ever had. I was really nervous to take a Spanish course that was solely speaking and writing, but he makes the process so much easier and more enjoyable. No exams either, just essays that we peer review and a few group discussions that you can have a prep sheet for with vocab. He's the best!
Professor Hernandez was a great teacher! He cares about his students and wants you to succeed. There are 4 oral assignments in class that you do with a partner and they aren't hard. Besides that there is very few homework assignments and if he gives homework its easy. The tests are on paper in person and if you study you'll do good! Overall great
Professor Hernandez is great! He really knows a lot about Spanish grammar and teaches well. The tests and quizzes weren't hard, and he always give study guides before exams. He cares about his students and is very flexible about making up anything you missed. I highly recommend!
This dude is the man yo. Peace out
Spanish speaker so this class was really easy for me but he is such a good choice. He was so nice and brought us pan dulce once I would take him if you get the chance. Easy hw, tests weren't bad they are out the notes and the exams are the same way. if you pay attention in his class you will be fine!
Professor Hernandez has been my favorite professor overall. The class was not too much work or difficult but I still learned a lot. As long as you go to class and put in a little bit of effort you will do well. He is also very caring and understanding.
Profesor Hernandez is a very sweet guy. His lectures are long and boring (because 300 is a grammar course), but you can tell he is passionate about what he is teaching. His canvas is also very disorganized. Overall, he is a solid choice for 300.
Never had him for class but he came to Upark once and played soccer with my intramural team. Probably a great professor but an even better dribbler
Mr. Hernandez is a great human and teacher. As a non native speaker he has taught me so much! I am taking his 320 class next semester because I liked him so much. Does require a descent amount of prior Spanish knowledge.
I would absolutely recommend taking this professor! It's very clear that he is highly prepared for classes and is always trying to improve. He genuinely cares about his students and puts forth the effort to get to know them. Assignments are always returned with clear feedback and much emphasis is put on learning from your mistakes which is helpful.
Prof. Hernandez wants you to succeed. He cares about you and your grade. Will help when needed and you can make corrections on exams to help. Lovely man if you are able to take him, do it!!
Totally recommend! It's really not hard besides the VHL hw buts unlimited attempts. He's funny, caring and attendance matters but obv if something comes up, he will understand. He lets you have certain things on the exams and quizzes but he'll tell you and you get to do corrections on everything.
honestly one of the best spanish professors i've ever had, he's so kind and will work with you under any circumstance. you're given an opportunity to do corrections on everything (5 quizzes, 2 written assignments, 2 exams, 1 final). he gives you all the material you need to succeed and you do. the only annoying thing is VHL, but unlimited attempts.
If you don't take him you're missing out - favorite professor at JMU. Wants you to succeed, super understanding and laid back. Work is never overwhelming or stressful. No exams or quizzes, all conversation/writing based grades and you get corrections. So sad this was my last class with him, his class and energy will put a smile on your face.
The syllabus schedule is inaccurate, assignments are small and hard to get a good grade on, and notifications for future work are lacking. An intermediate-level course, but it requires VERY high proficiency, and recorded lectures have tangents. Almost every assignment involves romance/love, which may be cultural, but the portrayal is strange.
Really liked this class, taking him again next fall. Quizzes and exams aren't bad, there are corrections. There is online hw due every Sunday, multiple attempts it also comes with the textbook but we rarely used it. I recommend
Great Spanish professor, the best JMU professor that I have ever had
