Awesome enthusiasm, I dont like math too much but I never missed a class. So if anyone can get you to like math at least a little its Dr. Lightwood.
You da bomb! A + B = YOU KICK ASS!!! You better run to that bus chris!
Dr. Lightwood is a math genius. I personally never liked math and never did well, but after his class I've learned to appreciate it and not fear it. Always there for his students.
Dr. Lightwood is excellent. He has often spent hours giving me extra help. Very smart and an excellent communicator.
He's an awful teacher. He always comes to class unprepared. No syllabus is given, tests and quizzes are given a few days after they are announced (not enough time to prepare). Never did any reviews.
Negative comments about Dr. Lightwood are merely reflections of morons who never study. Dr. Lightwood is terrific! He makes sure you grasp the concepts, and if the class is having trouble with something he won't move on until everyone understands. Brilliant, nice, funny, and always willing to help
Dr. Lightwood is great. He is clear, funny, helpful, understanding, and always prepared. He really cares about all his students and doesn't leave anyone behind in the class. He keeps the class vibrant and literally dances around the blackboard while teaching. I highly recommend his class.
Lightwood is hilarious. His quirky mannerisms and oscillating voice inflections will keep you interested, even if the material doesn't. He really enjoys teaching, and the class atmosphere is delightful. The grading is fair as well.
this guy is awesome, just make mad jokes in his class
Crazy...but fun...hahaha...cant believe he broke his leg
I heard lots of bad things about Dr. Lightwood but he isn't really that bad. I hate the timed quizzes but he doesn't seem to do them that much. Maybe he was worse about it in the past. I kind of wish he could relate the material to everyday things better but it was multivariable calc, so who knows. The labs are also a bit difficult.
Don't Panic! These are the words that will frequently grace your tests and quizzes and are words you would do well to live by. Dr. Lightwood is just plain awesome. Whatever it is, if you wanna just hang out and chat or talk about some wild and crazy math he is usually up for it. He can be very tough, but is also very fair about your work.
Lightwood is hysterical, he often makes us laugh in class. I actually like the fact that he gives many quizzes, because the more he gives the more he will be willing to drop. He's very clear with what he's trying to teach you and makes math fun! I would highly recommend him
very good professor- explains everything very well and does a lot to make sure students understand... def take class with him, does his best to make class funny and enjoyable
Dr. Lightwood can teach calculus in his sleep, and probably does. It is so easy to understand what he is teaching, and he makes class fun (almost impossible for calc). Take his class.
Great math teacher, always available for help, and makes things simple to understand.
Not fun, terrible lecture, poor sense of humor, grading policy unclear
Terrible!! He doesn't tell you how hes grading, he writes all over the board in an unclear fashion. He also demeans students. Don't take him if you can avoid it.
Lightwood is both funny and interested in his subject. Class with him is enjoyable and informative.
Dr Lightwood is a good professor. He goes a little too fast for the class most of the time, but if you pay attention and put in the effort outside the class, you'll do fine. Gives a lot of partial credit on quizzes and tests to give you the best grade you deserve. Nice guy, a little scattered at times, but will help you if you need it.
You can tell that he's actually interested in this material, and that makes all the difference. If you don't understand what's going on, ASK and he will go over it until you do. He's got a great sense of humor and a way of teaching that makes all of the concepts seem natural. Take him if you get the chance, you won't regret it
I have mixed feelings about Dr. Lightwood. Sometimes I really didn't like him and other times I felt like he was a quality professor. The guy knows his stuff, but I had trouble grasping the concepts most of the time. That is probably because I am not the best at Math. One piece of advice, don't take the class if it is once a week.
He is a really nice guy. Has a funny sense of humor. Sometimes he can be confusing, but if you ask a question he will do his best to clarify. He tries to make the topics easy and understandable. You can always talk to him after class or go to his office hours.
Doesn't spoon feed you. You actually have to try and you will learn the material.
He is a good teacher a little spacey but he cares about his students and wants you to get good grades.
Calc is NEVER easy but going to his class is usually fun. He is really nice, but also spacey. He will teach you something in class, but on the test he takes the concepts to a higher level, which he doesn't prepare you for. While i enjoyed this class he never posted midterm grades, now a week after semester ended i'm waiting for my final grade still
PROS: knowledgeable, sense of humor, writes his own PDF 'mini-textbooks' CONS: late to class a lot, sometimes his humor can seem intrusive
He may be good at teaching calculus, but he's not great at teaching Great Ideas in Mathematics. The coursework is so obscure and hard to understand and he thinks he's teaching it well, but almost everyone did bad on the midterm and there's not enough chances to get your grade up. Tough class.
This teacher is absolutely the most confusing teacher I've taken ever, nothing he does is clear, and it is hard to make sure your grade is up in that class and he doesn't even take attendance, so it seems pointless to go because it didn't matter that you missed a class because I wouldn't understand it anyways. Don't take this class if you can.
This is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He does not make any sense. He gets off topic so easily. He does not help you when you ask for it. He challenges on EXAMS instead of homework... Prepare to fail.
BEYOND horrle professor. Confusing, anxious, mumbles, confuses self, makes simple problems complicated and confusing, no syllabus, announces exams two days before-hand without information or study guides, spends an entire 1.5 hour class on ONE simple problem. If you have this professor, good luck.
I've had him for 4 courses now and I've had a love/hate relationship with him. I've learned a lot, but he is pretty sarcastic and I took it to heart before I realized it was a joke. He pushes you to do well and you will learn a lot if you try and are focused. And he grades based on effort!
Absolutely awful. I took AP Stats in high school and loved it/did well at it. So I thought this class would be a nice brush up; well I was WAY wrong. He made the info I already knew and was comfortable with, confusing as heck. He is so confusing, he doesn't even know what he is saying sometimes. Save yourself A LOT of stress and DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Very bad class. Do not take it. Just really bad.
All I can say is this professor is by far the worst one I have ever had at Westconn. He is very confusing and unorganized, unresponsive to emails, and spends the whole class asking useless questions he doesn't even know the answer to.
By far the worst professor I've ever had! I thought my calc professor last year was bad, but he definitely took the cake. He spends way too much time on theory and not enough on actual applications of the problems so when you go to do the homework, you're left to figure it out on your own. He's very disorganized and NEVER gets straight to the point
The class it self was okay. He was very confusing and unorganized. He writes all over the board. Test are long and the question setup is tricky and confusing. I am still waiting for my final grade to be posted and the grades were due 3 days ago.
This teacher is horrible. Please avoid. This is the only teacher in my life that has given me such a horrible grade and I normally pull A's in math (Indian). He is extremely confusing goes off on tangents. You will not learn much and class is droll. AVOID like the plague unless you want to murder your grade as well as not learn. AVOID AVOID!
Awful, he's a nice guy but just awful professor. He's ll over the place with lectures, super confusing. Never got 2/3 exams back, so I have no idea how I did on them. There was stuff on the exams that we never covered. I went to talk to him about how I was concerned about my grade he told me not to worry, but then I got a C. GPA KILLER. AVOID.
A hard professor to rate. He's a really nice guy, but his lectures tend to be really hard to follow. He has a bad habit of taking ages to return homework assignments too. If you go to him for help, he's happy to provide it and he's very easy to talk to, but he often presents the material in a really confusing way. Take him if you're good at math.
Terrible teacher. Very condescending, doesn't know how to explain things to a class that's clearly just trying to fulfill their math gen ed. Homework is easy but tests are hard and ask for things you've never been taught. Lectures are more like rants, he goes off on unrelated tangents. If you're looking for an easy gen ed, avoid this one.
Be wise and listen to the majority of comments shown for Professor Lightwood. If you want to do well in your math class, RUN from this professor. We only had 2 tests when we were supposed to have 4, homework is hard, tests are even harder. He is very unclear, hard to follow, doesn't answer questions well. It is up to you to teach it to yourself.
He would stand in front of the class and ramble on about absolutely nothing. I asked for help on a problem and told me the answer or just looked at me and walked away? No one had a clue what was going on, he expects you to know this stuff when we are here to learn how to do it? He even told us i am going to quiz you on things you don't know.
Actually the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Don't even bother taking the class if you struggle with math because you will 100% fail. You ask him for help and NONE is given. The fact that he still teaches amazes me. You will no idea what he talking about mostly all of the time. worst teacher DO NOT TAKE!!!
Hes horrible, makes math even harder! he's very confusing and will not help you if you really need it. I WILL NEVER TAKE HIM AGAIN!! his lectures are very pointless and just talks to talk.
Lightwood is hilarious. He's a little spacey and scatterbrained, but he knows what he's doing. I'm a pretty average math student and I'm doing very well in this class. You really have to pay attention and do some learning on your own, but he makes it fun and relatively easy
if you ask for help he will just laugh at you
HE gets off topic easily and is not a clear speaker
Ended up withdrawing from the class. Gives quizzes and tests before teaching the material. You are set up to get an F. Great guy and can be funny, but I don't understand why he is allowed to be a professor.
Very funny teacher but gets off topic easily. He is not helpful in class - students have to learn on their own. You take quizzes before learning the material so you're guaranteed to fail. Tests are hard and not all the material is covered in class. Wouldn't recommend his classes unless you are really good at math already.
He's a pretty nice guy, but he isn't very clear. He's somewhat condescending and will make jokes that aren't even that funny. He thinks it's a good idea to cram quizzes right before an exam instead of doing one every week. He also gives quizzes on stuff we didn't even learn yet. Again, nice guy, but awful professor.
Was usually always late by at least 10-15 mins. And then keeps you 20 mins after class is over. Gives assignments and never grades them. Waited 4 weeks for a test grade. No midterm grade was ever made. Homework is done online but never collected. Book is never referenced. No outline, syllabus or schedule for the course. No structure.
Never graded the midterm, had to go out of my way to get help because he rambles on all class about markers. Doesnt ever follow the book spent half the class on limits and rushed the rest of the chapters.
He is the worst professor ever
In class you don't really learn to much. Told to buy a textbook and never used it. When you have a question he puts you on the spot and confuses you even more. He is a very nice and smart teacher. Tests are tough and he's confusing. He takes time to get back to emails and sometimes doesn't answer. I liked him as a teacher, but its a tough class.
hate him. worst professor ive ever had. if you can pick a different teacher then do it.
I hope he stops teaching. Literally the worst teacher I ever had. Wish I checked here before taking his class. Don't even know what we are learning because he babbles on and on and just writes random crap... Stay away.
I can't believe I paid for a class where I learned more from the Internet. Likes to put things he hasn't taught on exams and expects people to know it.
He's a good person, but...I can't recommend him as a professor in good faith. His classes are highly disorganized, the lectures are ad-libbed, the homework expectations are.. what are they? I don't know either. Math courses here present a stark contrast between overly structured (MyMathLab) and virtually no structure (MAT120 to MAT17x).
He is a very nice guy. I think that he is so smart that he has no idea how to teach. If you ask him a question he never actually answers it. Says he shows up late on Exam Days so you only have an hour to do the test, and you don't get the full class time. I am pretty much teaching myself. He is not a good professor.
The absolute WORST professor I have ever had. He is a very smart man but teaching is the last thing he should be doing. He rambles on about who knows what for the entire class, sets no expectations, offers NO help when a question is asked or at office hours (if you can convince him to have it), and all assignments are near impossible. Do not take.
Easily he was one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. That being said I took his class twice as a freshman (really stupid idea) because i withdrew the first time. He rambles more than any professor. Ever. Please just take Dr. Maida instead. Stay away from this professor for your GPA's sake. Thank me later.
If you find you will have this professor, CHANGE CLASSES. He does not know what hes doing and when he does, he will take the most complicated route in explanation. Im lucky to have some prior knowledge in the subject, but if I didnt, I have no doubt that I would fail his class! He messes up often on small details making it difficult to follow.
I came into this class not knowing anything about stats and I am leaving this class not knowing anything about stats. If it wasn't for one of my classmates I don't think I would have passed this class. So if this is on your schedule please switch professors. PS you only have like 2 minutes to take quizzes.
Lightwood is a really smart and chill guy. I had him for statistics and although he does tend to get off topic and he doesn't like to repeat himself. The class is really easy as long as you show up and participate. I read these reviews before and was frightened to take him, but I ended up really liking Lightwood.
He made stats so hard because he is trying to make you think differently but all he does is confuse you. HORRIBLE lectures, does not give extra credit, once he knows your name he will ask you 10 questions in the same class.
Laughs when you ask questions and loses his markers and cant stay on track
Prof. Lightwood is a good guy, he cares about his class and wants students to learn an exceed, but his elaboration on topics is very minimal. Homework is your best friend, because he does not give out a lot of quizzes or tests.. this semester 1 quiz, Midterm, and Final. He's not a stickler on attendance. Class participation is minimal.
horrible. just run away.
He does not explain things well, gets off topic, doesn't give back any work, we have one month left and we still haven't gotten our midterm grade yet. Awkward to talk to. Overall, don't take this class with him Im so stressed out. RIP my GPA.
There's two weeks left of the semester and we just took our first exam. The week prior to that we took our first quiz. No midterm grades were given and he has just told us that we are all failing. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!
We told him we didn't know what we were doing and his reply was "You don't really need to know what you are doing in order to answer these question" Then he wonders why we failed the first test.
The worst professor I've ever had he answers your question with a question. He also does not teach you anything, we are in class for no reason. He says that there is no right answer yet we failed our first exam that we took two weeks ago, mind you that spring semester is about to end in a couple of days. He claims the whole class is failing.
not enough characters to even describe how bad this teacher is. HE IS SO STUPID DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
He answers every question with some form of "in this universe and cosmos, there is no right or wrong answer..." while slowly proceeding to back away from you, leaving you even more confused.
Very rambly, unclear, seems knowledgeable but not a good teacher. Avoid if you're bad at math. And this is someone with an A in junior and senior year math.
The worst professor I've had at Westconn so far. He still has yet to post any grades and it's 2 weeks past midterm. Whenever you ask him a question he always answers it saying something about the cosmos and then he starts rambling and walks away leaving you clueless. He also takes the whole class to explain something very simple, a waste of time.
Very confused as to what I am supposed to be doing in his class, and we are in week 10 of the semester. He has yet to post any grades onto blackboard or banner web so I am not sure if I am doing well or need to step it up.
Dr. Lightwood is so smart that he understands his concepts but is not the best at explaining. He will not give out answers but makes you work for the understanding of the concept. He is a very easy grader as long as you do the worksheets. Ask for clarification if needed, and your class will be your support system. Everyone passes or everyone fails.
Don't take him if you're a non-math major. He's one of those people where he makes zero sense, even though he clearly knows what he's talking about. But if you're smart, or a math major, take the easy A.
Lightwood is a smart man! Approach to teaching is unique and if you're not on the same level, it may be difficult (if you've done acid, you'll see where he's coming from). He makes sure that we understand the material, which is why he answers a q with a q so we can work our way to the solution ourselves. Learned a lot! I'll most likely get an A!
Very uncommunicative, highly disorganized, constantly late for class, unprepared -takes 30 minutes on average to start the lesson. OH, AND HE DITCHED US THIS SEMESTER!!! no emails, no updates, no communication, no grades, no response, blackboard is empty. Maybe the aliens he speaks of so much took him back! VERY disappointed!
Loved to talk about aliens. Loses his markers every class and rants about it the whole lecture. Everything was online including the textbook. I had to have my classmate teach me everything because he does not explain how he gets to the answer and then says there is no wrong or right answer but then fails us all. Switch out of this class of you can.
The reviews on this dude talk about how he is a bad teacher, but him in online school is so much worse. He hasn't communicated to the class in 3 weeks. lmao bad teacher, but probably easy online.
Emailed him multiple times the first few days 9f class. No response. Took about 4 weeks into the class to get a single email from him. He posted 5 assignments at once. Haven't heard/seen anything from him since. Midterm grades were due this past week. There is no midterm grade. He hasn't graded a single assignment. Theres been no exams. Wth???
Last fall, we started the course late and his communication with students was sparse. Few weeks pass with no instruction and he eventually was off the grid. Had to find a replacement which took until around the week of Thanksgiving to find, so this turned into a winter intersession course that nobody had planned for. What a waste of valuable time.
Professor Lightwood is a nice man. However, he is a horrible professor, he is unorganized, will show up to class late, and hold the class past the end time. His teaching style is very disorganized, he will fill the whiteboard with calculations and make it so messy you can't even follow along. Expect to have to teach yourself a lot of the material.
Spent the entire semester complaining about how his computer files are disappearing. admitted our midterm grades were completely random. Never got any form of test and the entire grade was based off of 8 homeworks that he never handed back, our final grades were a complete surprise as we got no feedback. I wont be surprised if they were random too.
