This class is a bit too easy- so for everyone just looking to float along take it. However I didn't really feel like I was learning much and the classes felt like "group sessions" where you tell everyone your life story. Mr. Pierce is very very nice- I like and respect him a whole lot..flaky tho.
Very nice, genuine good guy. Not learnin a lot like I wanted to in this class tho. It's not too organized. Too many group sessions where he leaves the room and comes back when class is half over.
Mr. Peirce does seem really flaky when it comes to bringing in the study guides/modules for us to study for tests. but he does go over every chapter very well
How did this guy ever pass a teaching exam? He is so disorganized that he will stop people in the middle of a test to explain how to take it. He basically photocopyed his quizes and then tood a big black marker and crossed out things. I thought this was college not preschool. And who needs 2 whole classes to talk about 1 statistics problem?
Very very nice guy, but definately not prepared for classes. Easy to get an A. Leaves all the time and comes back at the end of class. We just moved our desks into group circles every class period, and didn't reallt talk about anything. I didn't learn much, but he's a super nice guy so I hate to say anything bad about him.

very unorganized, unperpared, doesn't have a clue what his talking about.
AWESOME TEACHER, VERY EASY NICE AND HELPFUL, GUARANTEED A+
AWESOME PROFESSOR, EASY TO UNDERSTAND, VERY NICE
I took this class last summer and found his teaching method to be for students that have self-discipline and self-responsibility. The students had to be responsible for reading the material outside of class. He listened, he encouraged thought provoking conversation, and tied the book work into real world situations. Very refreshing.
Not very organized. Did not hand mid term tests back until day of final. How can you study for a final when you have no idea where your weakness is? Not very organized at all. Wanted a HUGE term paper in APA format and kept saying he would explain the format and never did. Everybody guessed at what he wanted. Very disorganized!!!
Not a bad class if you don't want to be taught anything. If pointless assignments and group discussion with no real focus are your thing, this class is right up your alley. To do well in this class, stare off into space during the lectures, then read the required book chapters because the test questions don't come from the lectures
awesome person
He is a great teach, who luvs to teach and enjoys group discussions as well. He is very easy going and easy to understand. So, I recommend you take his class. Making an effort and coming to class everyday goes far w/this teach. If you like to **** and whine take another class.
Samual is very into case work and teaches with a focus on casework. In class we learned by doing as much as lectures and reading. The term paper was a bit overwhelming but was an accomplishable goal. That taught me alot about a mental disorder I have wanted to know more about, I will take another class with Sam.
Awesome teacher. definately reccomend him to others. loves group works and lectures fun and easy to follow along, fun class.
I have taken mr. pierce for everyone of my psychology class he is an awesome teacher if you love to have fun while learning I highly recommend him
Makes learning interesting but challenging and become my favorite class
Sam was very involving in class participation. Sam always had a positive attitude and really challenges you to think out side the box
Sam is one of the best teachers I've had. He's extremely helpful and makes learning fun. If your thinking about taking a psy class he is the best.
Sam pierce is a very nice man. Easy A - but thats not always a good thing. But for this class it was a good thing - the stuff in the book was absolutely pointless information for me - If you feel like doing more homework for your grade - just ask the teacher - I'm sure he'll make you study harder and give you more homework. A little unorganized.

I reccomend this instructor. I had him for both 201 and 101 and both were easy to go through. He is a helpful guy and has a good sense of humor. "Give him some love" :)
Peirce is quiet possibly the best professor at Chemeketa in my opinion. He made our abnormal psych class so much fun and I wanted to go to class!! I recommend this class to anyone who either just needs a class, or needs it for psych. Take it with him..i guarentee you will learn SO much and still have fun! He does great at including you in class:)
Sam!!! Hes an awesome Instructor. He explains important concepts very well. His classes are fun, because he wants to hear what you have to say. And if you say something profound, you'll hear the imfamous "OOOOOO" or "AHHHH" Haha. Tests are great, they test your knowledge but arent aimed to trick you. Anyone needing social science credit-take Sam.
He is a great teacher. But WATCH OUT FOR HIS MOOD SWINGS!!!!!!!!!!! They can be brutal. The paper is hard but doable. Give some love!
Disorganized, didnt hand any of the class work back to the students... (Did he even grade them?) Always late to class. This class was so easy and a waste of money...
i enjoyed my abnormal psychology class.i actually walked away thinking that just maybe i could be a psychologist.what i liked best is the way sam engage is the class in the learning process.he encouraged participation by asking for our opinions and responding "no wrong answers" i loved it!i have a new found respect for people who suffer with a ment
I would highly recommend this professor! He honestly gives you the option of taking as much or as little as you would like from this class. If your looking for an easy A, then this is the class for you! I adore him!
Sam is an awesome person, but his class lacks structure. He never hands back assignments and it's hard to tell where you stand in his class. If you participate in class, he says it helps your grade but you never have any indication of your progress. He encourages his students to engage in discussion but everyone ends up telling their life stories.
Teaching style is very interactive lecturing, lots of information is presented.
Group work was useless, it didn't even seem related to anything. Lectures boring. No direction on the 10 page paper he expected us to write. Never got test scores back. Better off taking this class online since it'd make more sense to just read the textbook.
This teacher does not keep any of the things that you do in class, nor does he return them to the student. He is unable to tell you why it is that you go the grade that you did. Does not respond you emails or requests to have a grade breakdown.
A very nice, and good teacher. Talks to his students like they are real people and more than willing to help you out.
Sam is a great guy, uses powerpoint presentations with his lectures, he gets his students involved with group work, and by asking their opinions. the one thing i didnt really like was that he did not hand back work, this would have been useful to get feedback, but just show up to class do the work and study for the tests and youll be fine
What's good about his teaching style is that he asks students' opinions and he gets everyone involved and thinking about the lesson. What's not good is that he's sometimes forgetful about getting students' work back and he will often randomly assign extra homework without even really announcing it and this makes it easy to get behind.
Sam is a great instructor! Dr.Sam's class was very educational and often times like a town hall with an opportunity to for each of us to voice either our own knowledge or opinion on a subject. He is very respectful. I loved his class. He gets an A+++
He is very relaxed and easy going
I loved his class. It was so interesting and I really liked how he engaged the class and asked different people for their opinions. But don't think you can slide by without the text, cause you seriously need it to study for the tests. There was a 10-pager, but he gives you all term to work on it.
Sam is very easy going. Sometimes a little too kicked back; not always clear about due dates and exam content. But his class is very fun. There's a lot of class discussion, always interesting. He's fun, sometimes dances haha. Rarely use the text in class, but needed for tests. I think this class is worth taking for sure.
He prints the slideshows he uses in class for the lectures which is really nice but still read!! He uses the text a lot in the tests and quizzes a long with the slideshows so keep reading! Also, there is a 10 pg. paper due at the end of the term.
Very good teachers. Very easy going and has a good sense of humor.
I thought this class was easy. As far as the handouts go he only did that twice the term I had him and he didn't grade any of my assignments until two days before the final(which he was 30 minutes late for). He then told me I had an A. So i was surprised when my financial aid got cancelled for him giving me a grade of incomplete.
Pro-he sends you the power points and those are the test. Con- doesn?t give you your grades till end. From what I have heard he used to be a better teacher. But I don?t know.Doesn?t responded to emails after 3rd week. But only 4 things on grade that was nice and he isn?t a difficult grader. Plus I was able to meet some cool people in the group time
I enjoed his class and its really not that hard as long as you do your share. I would take a class from him again.
I really loved Dr. Sam. He was very insightful, and his oohs and aah's and I am right there with you's will never be forgotten. This class was a challenge for me because it was my first psych class but I did enjoy it, and managed to scrape by with an A. But make sure you take advantage of the notes allowed on the exams everything is from the text.
By far the most meaningless class I took in my time here. Sam was on time once and missed five classes. No communication on grades. Never responded to emails. It was the biggest waste of time.
Sam is easy going, and makes class interesting. His tests are moderately difficult, read the assigned chapters and you'll be fine.
Unorganized, forgetful, but overall not a horrible teacher. Be prepared to deal with his lack of clarity and strange teaching persona.
Sam is a very cool guy. Interesting teacher with his own style, which you are likely not used to. If you are looking for lots (or any) teacher feedback on how you are doing, or graded papers being returned, you WILL be disappointed. He doesn't play that way. However, if you show up, pay attention, and participate, you can learn a lot.
Mr. Pierce was a fun teacher with his on way of teaching that makes you feel so comfortable and he's great at bringing the whole together in discussions. May not give much feed back but provides you w/ all material needed to Ace the class and he's always responded to emails w/ a simple 'Thanks' so I know he's received it which is all that matters;)
At first I didnt like Sam, but after being in class for a wile i really enjoyed his style. He makes it fun and you learn. He doesnt give work back graded do you dont really know what you got but if you show up, pay attention and participate you will get a good grade.
At first I wasn't excited about the class or Sam. He has a unique approach. I warmed up to the class and Sam. He does a good job respecting everyone's opinion and keeping the discussion moving. Test are all from text so I would use chapter reviews for notes, much more helpful than slide notes in my opinion.
I'm confused. This guy was supposed to be a top-notch teacher, but I didn't see it. He might have potential, but the drive is gone now. I wonder if he even wanted to be there. His body language told me he really didn't, but I could have been wrong. he could just be REALLLLY laid back.
I went on this site prior to having this teacher and heard some bad things abt him playing favorites and stuff and after taking this class i realize that they are all lies. he is a great teacher he knows wat he is talking abt and if you pay attention and read the book you should get an A. he encourages participation.. Best pysch classi have had
took hin for all of my lower div. psy EXCELLENT PROF. doesn't always return calls or emails but if ur in class u'll catch him. He keeps it interesting and the subliminal teachings from outspoken class members is hilarious!
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Had a loss in the family, so he missed a bit of time. He loves what he does and it shows in his teaching. Sit close to the front, because he is soft spoken sometimes. Lots of class participation in class and no wrong answers. He wants to make sure you get what is being taught. Highly Recommend!
I really enjoy Sam as a person. He seems genuine. But I really do not like his class or teaching style. There is no wrong answer, but that is why I take classes, to learn the wrong and right answers. He gets through material extremely slow.
Sam pierce is a funny, laid back, easy to talk to person. His class is enjoyable. Everyone becomes apart of the in-class discussions. As long as you attend class on a regular basis, you will pass the class. the exams are based off of notes and of the material in your textbook! so read chapters as you go along!
I really enjoyed attending his class. I was never really interested in psychology however he makes it very easy to understand and I was never bored in his class. He is very humorous throughout his lectures.
Dr. Pierce is a really nice and intelligent person. Pretty laid back class, not too much work, and he's very understanding. Do what's asked of you and you'll be fine. However, don't expect to get your tests/papers back, which is the only downfall of his class. But since everything is pretty straight forward, it wasn't a problem for most people.
Sams class is fun for the most part. i have no idea what grade i have or if i have missed anything??? i requested a syllabus 3 weeks ago and have not recieved one. hope i pass.
he is the best
Very awesome instructor, I really enjoyed his company while in his class. He always was willing to help me. I suggest taking his class.
Dr. Pierce is a very friendly, personable teacher. You'll mostly just do one big paper and tests (which you'll NEED to read for, even if he doesn't say it) He lectures a lot, but encourages discussion. Problems: he is very vague, gets off topic, and doesn't get papers back very quickly. If you need clarity don't be shy, ask, he's really nice.
Sam is very helpful and understanding! You never have a wrong answer in his class and he is easy on tests and grading. Such an awesome instructor! Most definitely recommend!
Definitely worth taking! Sam is a great instructor and really goes the extra mile to help his students. He even lent me his own pencil when I forgot one for a test. :) Very interesting discussions, and everyone always feel comfortable sharing their opinions.
Definitely worth taking! Sam is a great instructor and really goes the extra mile to help his students. He even gave me his own pencil when I forgot one for a test. :) Very interesting class, and puts a lot of effort into making everyone feel comfortable sharing their opinions.
He's a awesome teacher.would take him again!
he was hard and all he did was read power points and made us do a 13 page paper and kept changing the due date
We usually just watched power points during class. He emailed us the power points to study. We occasionally did group work. We did have a lot of discussion and input during class. He often came to class not remembering what we we supposed to do that day and failed to follow to the syllabus for tests and our term paper dates. Not very engaging.
This was by far my favorite teacher! I have taken 2 of his classes and thought they were great. He was very entertaining, which made the class fun. All of the class-discussions were interesting and helped get a better understanding on the topics. I highly recommend his class!
Nice and very informative. he has a lot of on the job experience and cares about his students
Too leniant for lazy people. Not firm on test dates and term paper date. People who barely show up, pass because he emails powerpoint of all notes anyway and allows weeks late assignments. Dont buy a text book for him Used it ONE time towards the end of the term Whole class is discussion. If you want an easy A and no discipline go ahead. I wouldnt
Sam is awesome. Lots of PowerPoint material, but you get it emailed so don't freak out at all of the class discussion. Don't need to purchase a book. You will never use it and he does not like it anyway.
I liked having open discussions! I would have took his PSY 201 but did not fit in my schedule!
Excellent teacher very nice person.
Sam was an awesome teacher he made class fun, entertaining, and easy to understand. Definitely recommend him.
Great teacher. Show up to class and participate and you will be fine. If there are questions don't be afraid to ask, he will answer them no matter how stupid. If you have an opinion state it. He loves group discussion. It shows interest and communication and makes great for debate.
He is never on time to class. One time he didn't even show up without any warning. He NEVER returns graded work and can never explain why you get the grades you do. He is EXTREMELY unorganized. His tests are really hard. He plays favorites and has a bias when he grades. His assignments are unclear. Would not recommend taking his class.
He is very unorganized. During class it's all open discussion and PowerPoint. He doesn't ever know what is on the test nor does he give you clear enough notes for the test. Highly recommend reading the book even though he tell you it's all based on the power point. He also doesn't grade test and assignment until week 9. Wouldn't recommend him.
Sam is a great guy, however, his assignment descriptions are incredibly vague. He is unclear on deadlines and what he wants. I love Sam as a person, but as an instructor you could probably find someone better.
DONT TAKE HIM! He frequently cancels class. When he is there, the lectures are unorganized powerpoints and unhelpful discussions. Your grades rely solely on the tests and a very long, vague essay assignment. The tests he gives have little, if anything, to do with his lectures. He doesn't post grades. I've learned more from the textbook than him.
Sam is a good guy, buy he is so unorganized. He is not a man of his word, and grades rely solely on exams which are very difficult. He only gives you 50 minutes in a two hours class to do your exam!!! and then after the exam, the class is over. The majority of people do not like the way he teaches. STAY AWAY, YOUVE BEEN WARNED.
He was horrible at telling you your grade. Class was out early almost every day. Nothing was really taught.
Sam is a wonderful man! He is confusing at times but it almost makes it more exciting, and if you ask for clarification he gives it. Class is easy enough as long as you keep up on reading and do not miss any group days. I really enjoyed Sam as a professor!
How Sam is getting 5's!!! i would not recommend taking him to anyone! Even if it is a easy grade. He is unorganized, gets mad at you if you make any noise, unclear on direction, changes his mind on requirements and doesn't tell you. He even kicked someone out for their phone being out BEFORE class. So much more i could say but out of room.
Worst professor I've ever had! Not helpful, doesn't care about his students, never on time.
Never emails you back or takes forever to email you back never tells you how you are doing
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Unfortunately this is so. His lectures are not help. a good analogy would be like the 3rd state of matter: it fills up the room, has no definite direction and has no substance (that can help you) Grades on participation not on content of your tests and paper. BTW, paper - THE most frustrating thing i had to do, and I love writing
Sam is a genuinely nice guy and can make you chuckle even if you don't want to. He's the type of guy you wouldn't mind having a glass of brandy with while you check out live jazz. However as a professor he is rather unclear in expectations, the syllabus went right out the window, I never even opened the book, and the class was just left confused.
Grades for tests and papers were not received until after the final was taken. Teacher had no clear plan for class and sent out his powerpoint's so there was really no reason to actually show up in class. Exams were often based on material we didn't go over in class and were then graded on a massive curve.
EASY class to pass.
Did not receive grades until after the final. He was all over the place with his lectures and teaching style. Exams had material that wasn't covered in class or even in the textbook for that matter. Powerpoint lectures were mainly him harassing the students for 30 minutes per slide. No point in even showing up to class.
WORST REACHER I'VE EVER HAD! Lectures are extremely unorganized. Tests always have material in them that we didn't go over in class or the book. No respect and doesn't care about his students. Constantly cancels class. He showed up 40 minutes late for our final and didn't even say sorry. Finals are over and I still only know my 1st test score.
Dr. Pierce randomly cancelled class multiple times, & was 35 minutes late to our final. 1st exam was finally graded @ week 9. Expectations were extremely unclear & 1 week after finals, still nothing in the gradebook on blackboard. He carries himself in a self righteous, arrogant, and unapproachable way. Tests don't accurately reflect class lectures
Sam was a great person, but a poor instructor. I lost track of how many times class was canceled, and our 8:30 class often started around 8:40ish. I never knew what my grade was until after finals. His lectures were fine, he always got the class involved and a lot of people got to speak. Overall he seemed caring and knowledgeable, tests were easy.
Finals were 2 weeks ago, still don't know my grade.. The course could've been really engaging & educational but class was often cancelled & lectures were simply him reading off a powerpoint. Teaching style is very indirect & unorganized, much like this rating. Not sure how to accurately rate a professor that couldn't measure up to what I hoped for.
Not a very professional teacher, was consistently late to class and also cancelled several classes last minute. Ran the class very laid back, but lectures really just consisted of him reading from slides. Test material differed from material covered in class. Also took quite a while grading assignments and was not very clear about guidelines.
Okay Sam is an okay guy but the class is not a class you should take if you are actually trying to learn anything. We had two midterms and only one of them was announced, the second was by surprise. Oh and the term paper is about anything at all and he doesn't read it. Beware, its very laid back, but not entirely in a good way.
Unfortunately, Sam is not a very good instructor. His class is very unorganized, and he tends to make up deadlines and assignments on the fly. I didn't feel like I learned much of anything, and the class mainly consisted of notes and group work. While he's a nice guy, I wouldn't recommend taking this because you likely won't learn anything. shame.
Boring class and you don't learn anything. Might as well go watch paint try on the wall for years rather than taking this class and having your eyes rot from being so boring!
Worst professor I've ever had in my life. He gives over 11 pages of writing due in class
He takes forever to grade things and was not a very good teacher. There was a 7 page paper I had to write and it was difficult. I do not recommend taking this professor for this subject, there are better psych teachers.
Sam Pierce knows his stuff. I took him for Abnormal Psych and absolutely loved it. Abnormal Psych is pretty much my major. He teaches the class like he would a graduate class. You gotta know your stuff. Personally, Sam is a wonderful person, very kind and understanding. Highly, highly intelligent and passionate about what he teaches.
I personally didn't purchase the book; you can borrow one from the librry fro 2 hours. His tests are kind of weird, they kind of do and kind of dont have a lot to do with the tests. Although you are allowed one page of notes for the test, the tests are a little off and ask questions we didn't discuss. He's a nice guy and everything but eh professor
In this class he showed up late many times and once canceled class with no email, just left a note on the door. I have yet to see the grade I received on my term paper or my final exam. In class he interacts with students very heavily and it is difficult to know what is correct or not because he will most likely give positive feedback.
showed up late to class everyday, literally I kept track. still don't know my grade on my final I took the class spring term and its almost august. On the plus side he is very funny and if you show up you will pass
