Wouldn't take again

We wrote 6 essays. 3 were 100% for completion but the other 3 were long essays and if you thought you did amazing you probably only got a 92%. Not a lot of negotiation on grades.

I highly suggest you don't take Roper. I emailed him the beginning of the winter quarter and still haven't had a response from him!!! His grading criteria is horrible. He has no rubric laid out for your overall class grade. If you do get stuck with him try and form a group with other students it's the only way to pass. Go to the optional meetings!

The entire class was only graded on four papers. There was lots of reading. The essays didn't have clear criteria and although his feedback was helpful, he was very hard to reach, didn't respond to his email and didn't even show up to a lot of his zoom meetings to go over essays. If you didn't go to the zoom meetings you didn't know what to do.

Had to write 6 essays 3 shorts ones and 3 long ones. Essay instructions were very unclear and readings were hard to understand. I didnt like zooming with him because he confused me more. And never really was clear with his feedback. Although he was available for help.

Interesting content, but somewhat vague instructions. I think hybrid is more accessible than fully online.

His discussions/lectures are amazing and very insightful but the workload is just crazy, it was about 2 essays per week, one short essay (2 pages) and one long essay (5 pages) and the directions for the essay are very open-ended and it is more like free-writing which didn't really work for me, I need clear instructions on what I am doing.

Lectures are very in-depth and engaging which helps push ideas. His feedback on each of the short essays were helpful in getting the long essay going. But if I had more time to think or plan on my idea on the long essay this would have been a much more enjoyable class. After the short essay it all feels like a rush to complete the long one.

This was essentially only graded by attendance and the essays, 3 short & 3 long. Roper had to cancel class a few times which resulted in the last 4 essays feeling cramped together and like an impossible workload. Hes an okay teacher and will talk about your ideas with you but often I was left with more questions after asking for help.

I rated Roper with a 5/5 difficulty because of his disorganization and lack of rubric, not because he was a tough grader. I found him pretty easy with grading, but unclear. He would be very, very critical about an idea or draft paper in class, but in the end, it would get an A- at worst. He also made it difficult to understand when a paper was due

Prepare to have lots of work. There are about 10 readings, and 6 essays, which require a lot of work. He knows his stuff amazingly well, and is hilarious. He does tend to pick apart your essays, but he does it because he cares. He is a great guy, and will always grade your essay with A to an A- no matter how good or bad the essay is. He is great!

Mr. Roper is INCREDIBLY passionate in his teachings. If you are ready to engage in heavy class discussion and having read the assigned texts (only asked us to read about 10 pages before class, if even), you will love this class. He is also surprsingly personable. Although he is not great at responding to messages! But otherwise, great teacher.

We met Mondays and Wednesdays and had a zoom class on Tuesday, Thursday was a work day. When we went into class he lectured most of the whole time about the essay's we're writing or the authors we're reading, do's and don'ts. Sam is passionate about his teaching and he talks a lot about his farming. Awesome grader and insanely respectable.
