he gets distrcted very easily. stutters, i havent learned anything in this class yet. its all take home tests that you can look up online for an easy A
Very good teacher that knows his stuff. He does a lot of extra work bringing in things and has snack days. I found his class very good and would recommend him.
Very nice man! I wish the class had been a little more academic, but most students will love it!
Sam is one of the best. I rec. him.
Sawaya is a great teacher! He has a way of making you want to do great in his class! I have learned more in his class than with any other teacher! He is a must take! Whether or not you need his class, you will enjoy it!
I enjoyed his class. His class was very easy i thought, because his exams were map tests and take home tests. I barely tried and get an A. He talks about current event every class period, which I liked. He is a great teacher.
very helpful with everything, has a great understanding of material, makes class fun!!!
Sam is great. He gets a little distracted with current events sometimes, but hey, this is American History 3 so everything ties in well. If you pay attention in lecture, the exams are not too bad. . .challenging, but an "A" is easy as long as you put some time and effort into it.
as long as you make an effort, he's fair. i got an A, but i also did all the assignents and went to class. He thinks he's funny, even though he's not, however he was usually able to make classes interesting.
Great professor, gives few assignments, but you will need to think, not just look up an answer and fill in the blank. No busywork bs like some teachers. You can get a good grade as long as you put forth effort into your assignments, expect each one to take 3+ hours. The tests were take-home, similar to assignments but longer. I got an A.
A really great professor, though he can get off track pretty easy and repeats his anecdotes rather frequently. All in all, however, he is highly recommended. If you're taking more than one history or geography course per semester, take both with him, as he helps you more than usual. You'll work, but it's never busy.
Sawaya pushes his biased political opinions onto the class - every class - instead of using class time to *teach* history. Ex: One time he asked each student in class, one-by-one, whether they were liberal, moderate, or conservative. He "teaches" by telling long, personal, unintersting anecdotes instead of sticking to the topic. Take someone else
Mr. Sawaya is probably my favorite teacher at Sinclair simply because he's a peosonable guy that seems to care about his students. We barely used the book and listened to his powerpoint lectures. The take home tests really weren't hard, if you paid attention in class. I reccommend taking Mr. Sawaya and will probably take him again in the near future

Sam is the most laid back prof I ever had! Easy to listen to, easy to learn from. I like his teaching style, he talks to you NOT at you. Great sense of humor. You will work, his exam are essays that make you think. Very good class and prof!!!
Sawaya is a very knowledged instructer. Although his classes are not of the norm, they are very well organized. He respects every individual, even those that sleep during lecture, and welcomes any challenge. Assignments and tests are generally easy, they just make you think. I refer everybody to Sawaya, if they need to take any History classes.
If you want a class that you show up to and do nothing he's your guy. I learned nothing in his class. He canceled the exams to give out opinion based essays. You didn't have to know any history to pass his class. I've never felt like I've wasted more money on any class.
As a previous reviewer already said: "He "teaches" by telling long, personal, unintersting anecdotes instead of sticking to the topic". None of his lectures prepared the students for the tets at all whatsoever. He spent class time talking about his opinions on political views. But he IS respectful and regards each student equally.
He is the worst professor I've ever had. you won't learn anything. Instead you'll here his opinion on politics. He is VERY right wing but claims he is a moderate. Even libertarians will be upset. If you agree with everything Rush Limbaugh says take him. If not don't.
The only negative comments Ive read about Sam certainly came from the same student. I have had this prof for two different classes and one of these classes I got a C, so my comments are not based on any grade bias.Sam is an instatution at Sinclair because he is very friendly very helpful and his his jabs at both political parties are humorous.
His class was not difficult as all you really need to do is memorize map locations for countries, rivers, mountain ranges and so forth. The essays are slightly more difficult because you have to talk about issues. Honestly, his political opinions amount to the usual right-wing nonsense with perhaps a dash of multi-cultural understanding thrown in.
Prof. Sawaya is a wonderful, engaging professor. He encourages banter among students and does not judge based on political views. I had a phenomenal time in his class and would recommend anyone else to take a class with him.
Sam is a nice guy and is extremely intelligent but in his Search for Humanities class, he did a lot of talking about politics. The who class is him talking about his views to a couple of the people in the front row because they were former students. I liked him but I was not able to learn from him and dropped the class.
This Professor is perfect teacher. He makes the class interesting. I used to hate History since when I was in high school, but somehow His class makes me change my mind. I start like History because of him. He is a good teacher and professional in History. I really recommended to anyone who willing to take HIS 111.
I loved his class, I even switched around my schedule for this coming quarter just so I can have him again. Definitely would recommend him :)
I just finished this class and don't know my grade yet. This class met for 2hrs40 minutes and every minute was interesting. Students r encouraged to give their own opinion freely & world news is a big topic. Great teacher, loved the class! He does not preach a right wing agenda at all,as a previous poster commented.
I had no idea I would actually be intrigued by this class! Mr. Sawaya engages you in the topic, is full of knowledge, and has a sense of humor.I don't care what his political stand is, I think he has an opinion, and stresses that you have one too.
I've taken His 101 and Hum 131 with him. I hate history and he actually explains it well. Also makes it funny. He tends to ramble about odd subjects but is very knowledgeable. I plan on taking his other classes as well.
Sawaya's a nice guy, but as a teacher, he is a rambler and sold on his right wing, patriotic bias. It got a little much. I don't want him again.
He shows that he is partial to certain political ideas, which can be annoying, but he is very easy and sometimes funny. Wastes the majority of classes talking present day issues.
Sam is the best Prof I've had at Sinclair. He ties current events into the history you learn. He is a fiscal conservative and yet socially liberal; he shares these ideas but won?t push them on you. Oh and his jokes aren?t that bad.
He is very nice and keeps me interested. He starts class with current events and he gives 2 take home tests with a few other smaller assignments that are given with tons of time in advance. I am looking forward to taking him next quarter for American History!
I really loved taking this professor. I would suggest him to anyone! He is very understanding, lenient, and nice!
He is a great teacher and very understanding.
He's an easy professor. The take home tests took a long time but were easy to do. The essay and the comparative religion assignment were also easy. You should be able to earn an A if you do all of the work. However, I felt like I learned very little about history. He focuses too much on current events and politics. He is definitely conservative.
He is very helpful when it comes to the cartoon project, but he is very boring in class! He just reads right off of a long list of notes on Word....he doesn't make it interesting at all! The only interesting part of class is when we first start and he asks about current events. But he definitely does give plenty of information to pass his tests.
Sam is an awesome teacher. He will sometimes say things in class just to see the reaction(s) that he gets. He is very down to earth and you can get the time to get to know him a little. I was almost sad to not beeing able to take his classes anymore but if you see any of his sections; get them as fas as you can!!
Sam is by far my favorite teacher I have had at sinclair. He makes the class fun by starting off with current events and he has 2 exams and 2 papers which are take home. He doesn't load you down with work so you can concentrate on other classes
one of my favorite instructors at sinclair. very down to earth and funny. lectures were fun for the most part. He didn't use the textbook and wanted us to explore various sources for information to get diff. perspective. tests were essay format & take home. he is also an easy grader. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE HIM!!
(1607 - 1815)I had him my very fist quarter at sinclair back in fall 2010. His class was pretty laid back, reading the book really didn't matter a whole lot because the concepts discussed in class were mainly open discussions and open opinions, homework was easy, and exams were easy because they were take home. Awesome teacher, I highly recommend.
Took him for 101 also and hope to take him for 103, great teacher and very easy class!!
Mr. Sam was great teacher! He started off class talking about current events and issues. He is funny, he likes to get to know his students and he knows his History! Assignments are easy as long as you can respond as a critical thinker! Everything was take home! Attendance is important!!! Lenient with due dates and such but do not take advantage!
Sam is an excellent instructor, I've known him my entire life. He looks for his students to be active in discussions about current events, and about the class topics. He really tries to make things relevant in his history classes. He is a very cultured individual who has travelled and taught all over the world. Ask him about it sometime.
Sam is an awesome professor! Very funny, gets students involved in class, and actually makes his lectures interesting. Assignments and exams are a little tough, but they are take home and you only have a few the whole quarter. If you pay attention in class, you can get an A.
Sam is amazing, He makes History fun! All test are take home and not to hard.
Sam is a fantastic teacher, I take him for every class I can. He is very knowledgeable and helpful to students. His exams are time consuming, but take-home, the key is to start them early and spend time on them. His assignments are minimal, but take time as well. Overall rad teacher!
Sam is outstanding in a US History course. I was disappointed with 1111 because he spent more time off the subject than on the subject. He might be too right wing for 1112 or Middle East.
Sam is a great professor. He respects his students and is easy to talk to. His exams are take home and can consume a lot time to complete, but if you start early they are manageable. Showing up for class (or at least communicating with him when you can't) is a must! I will be taking him again.
I signed up for history, not some right wing view of everything.
Great teacher and very easy. Only had 3 assignments for grade the entire class. Two were research papers and the third was a take home quiz. I cracked the book only for the take home quiz and that was the online version. Definitely will take him again.
Amazing! test are take-essay form and there are only 4 essay papers- he is a reasonable grader- he also realizes this isnt the only class your taking
TERRIBLE teacher! I would not recommend him, not even to history lovers. Everything is very opinionated and one sided. He only talks about 2 things; himself and the government. He doesn't teach history. Everything I learned was from reading the book, which he dismissed as wrong on more than one occasion saying his notes were better than the text.
This teacher is by far the best professor I have had at Sinclair in my two years of being there. He is very opinionated, and he relates everything we talk about to real world events happening in that week. If you are easily offended, rethink his classes. Easy class, easy to work with, and easy to listen to. He is a very nice man as well.
He's a real person. Excused a number of my absences, so just be real with him. Show up, because its a sign of respect. Class is always interesting and there's barely any homework. Even tho he is opinionated, his view point is educated and from a,lifetime of experience. Just listen and decide whether you agree or not. Awesome. Would retake 100%
Wants everyone to participate so learn to speak up in his class. Easy grader. Barely has any assignments. Lectures can be very long and boring.
SAWAYA IS THE BEST TEACHER. I will HIGHLY recommend this class if like history. I believe Sawaya is not like other teachers that just go by the book and teach you from there, he actually knows the material and have been in those places. Together with his experiences and wise he gives an extraordinary class.
I LOVED him!! His class was never dull. He brings a lot of life experiences to his classroom since he did live in most of the places he teaches about. His exams are take home. Read his notes and use the book for reference, they're easy to get A's on. He is all about and loves class participation. One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet!!
Mr. Sawaya is the best history professor I have ever had. There are only a few assignments all term, whereas in return, he expects you to participate in class. I was sad this was my last history requirement, I wish I would have known him for my other history classes. Easy A? Take Mr. Sawaya!
Sam is awesome! easy A. we all like a's so take his class. Hes a super nice guy and cares a lot about his students. he loves the baseball team so be prepared if you have some of them in your class.
Best professor at Sinclair! Sam is the nicest guy you will ever meet. Classes are lecture based. Assignments and tests are take home. More than willing to work with you if you have any issues. Just be real with him. He wants the best for his students. Show up to class and turn in assignments and you will get an A.
He really cares about the students. He tries to interact, and is amazing at participating. We rewards participation from students, he offers extra credit. If you are willing to do the participation and the work, you should get an A. No tricks, fair and easy course.
Professor Sawaya is the best! He rewards participation and will give you respect as you earn it. He is kind, clear, and fair. The only way you will fail is if you actively try to and if you reach out to him he no doubt will help you. Sinclair is better off because of this professor. Also take HUM 1130 with him if you can.
Sawaya was an awesome professor. Lenient with grading and reasonable if you have a valid reason as to why you missed class. Attendance is very mandatory which is eh, but the generous grading makes up for it. Sometimes his tests and summary papers are difficult because you don't remember everything he teaches in class that is on them. Great guy.
sam is an amazing person , amazing teacher. caring and respectful! tbh he's one of the best teachers I had in my college life so far.
He has a clear grading criteria and he offers extra credit. Takes a long time to grade assignments and is difficult to reach if you're taking an online course
Sam was a great professor. He talked a lot in his lectures, but all the work we had were opinion oriented. He told you exactly what he wanted and is an easy grader. If you are respectful to him it will be an easy and enjoyable class. No Final either.
Professor Sawaya is affable and, as long as you do the work, not a hard grader. He can be a tad unclear with instructions, and the online course was kind of disorganized. Due dates were also frequently different than the ones on the list provided at the beginning of the semester.
Professor Sawaya's class was very enjoyable. He was always looking for feedback from students and he made class interesting. Papers are also very easy. Only downfall is attendance is mandatory. However, if you send him an email regarding why you missed class he will excuse it. A little hard to get a hold of.
He is a good professor. The text book we uses wasn't really a text book, it was more of a chapter book about a story. There are no quizzes or tests, you just show up, do the final project and you'll pass. Very easy if you don't goof off. Just pay attention and respect him and he'll give you an A.
He assigned 3 take home tests. I didnt pay attention a single day, never took notes, pretty much made his class a study hall period, and I passed w flying colors. It says the book is required but its most definitely not. I never opened it once. Just go to class, do some other work, then turn to google for your test questions. Youll be good.
He's a great professor. He's funny & he's very understanding. The discussions were so much fun. He very much welcomes participation. The class was extremely easy. The only downside is his grading system is a bit odd. I got a 90% & it was entered as a B. other than that, I really enjoy his class.
First, I'm a history major and was looking forward to this class. Boy was I in for a rude awakening. He lectures all period about current events, which I get it, history and current events go hand-in-hand but he spews nonstop right wing propaganda and then gets defensive when students point it out. Test heavy but won't teach material, just blabs
He is very insistent on participation in class and you to be involved/show that you are learning. No "tests" but rather there were 4 papers in which we had to show what we were learning. He wanted you to research your answers but some answers needed direct quotes from class lectures. GREAT teacher!! He truly wants to get to know his students!
Sawaya is a good professor. His feedback on assignments is very specific and also (pretty funny). However, even with online classes, he takes participation seriously. He also is very slow with grading, but still a good professor who cares.
He spent at least 20 to 25 minutes of every class going on political rants instead of teaching, openly comparing politicians of the opposite party to Hitler and literally telling students directly who to vote on Election Day 2016 all during class time. VERY unprofessional. I paid for a Western Civilization class not to hear his political views.
Easy class only two long papers and 2 take home tests. Great professor
Wonderful professor! Expects you to review course material independently. Uses class time in favor of political discussions & talks of current events. (Relates it back to coursework.) If you're talkative & like politics it's an enjoyable class! He leans libertarian right. Very considerate of life circumstances.
This class is easily the easiest class I have taken, he never really counted late credit. Reply to 3 comments in the weekly discussions (instead of the required 2) and get 10% extra credit for that assignment. Participate in the class discussions for him to like you, they were usually about current events and modern technology.
Professor Sawaya is a great man. He is clever with his lectures and likes to discuss political relevance when lecturing about Western history (if you are sensitive to political debate/wit, he might not be the professor for you). His lectures are anecdote-heavy, so asking questions is a great way to link his lectures with course content. Good luck!
A writing-heavy class but graded fairly and with reason. Back everything with sources. Didn't have to reach out for clarity more than once. But when I did got a super convoluted response. He wants you to interpret it and answer what you think the question is asking. Super open-ended but he wants your opinion so you cant be wrong.
He is hilarious. Just make sure you show up to class.
Sam was my guy. I did not like history at all, but he made it fun and I looked forward to coming to his class every time. Out of all my professors, I would take Sam again.
This professor is very understanding that life can happen outside of school and that sometimes deadlines can't be met. As long as you communicate, he will most likely work with you.
