Don't take this class with him

This guy is tough, but fair. If anything he over explains things to the class. Assignments are given out in written format with precise expectation.
Sam is the man. A little different to get used to, but he grades his tests really really easy. Not only that, he provides fun topics to give speeches over. He actually game me EXTRA points for talking to him after class.
Man I later took the Honors version COMS 131 and it was so much easier. The teacher didn't give you a B if you look down on your card nor if you pause for a second.
He was okay. Boring assignments.
Sam Schimek can suck my big toe
I detested this guy. Bizarre speech topics given, thought very highly of himself, and was very unfair with the grading by taking off a lot of points for silly bookkeeping things that had nothing to do with your ability to give a speech.
He thought he was cool and always laughed at everything. He's very picky on what your speeches are about, basically you don't get a say in anything. His exams were ridiculous! Don't take this teacher!
this class it not supposed to be hard, but he is one of the toughest graders of all profs. The assignments that he gives us are to fill our time.

Definately an easy teacher if you get on his good side from day one. He laughs at his own jokes every 2 minutes so laugh with him to make him feel better. He's actually a very nice guy but is very lazy and wont do anything outside of class for the students. He takes forever to return papers and speeches.
Not the easiest professor to get along with, but seems to go out of his way to be fair.
The key to doing good with Sam is to take your outline to his office before your speech and have him go over it with you. HE WILL TELL YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO FIX. And for God's sake PRACTICE your speeches before you give them, even if it's to your dog
Just try to switch to a different professor. Seriously.
I wish I had taken someone else. He has an attitude of bieng too busy for us, rarely answers emails. Picks completely obscure and uninteresting speech topics. Doesn't seem to sympathize with students much at all. He is not directly cruel or anything, you can survive, but for sure not my favorite.
Wonderful, absolute blast. Great teacher, funny, quirky. Easy class, fun class. Tests were easy. No homework except speech prep.
Pretty much just talk to him and things will be not that hard. He does kid of take off random points, but generally gives you the grade you deserve. He is kind of quirky and laughs at his own jokes though.
Cool guy. Seems like and he is going to grade easy but be warned, he does not. He really is not helpful and seems mad when you ask a question. Just took the final and it is entirely unnecessary memorization. As in list the 8 steps of blank and give examples of each. Completely ridiculous for an introductory required course.
Does NOT answer e-mails. Hard to get ahold of to answer questions. He uses good examples in class, and going to class on speech days is a must. Not that hard of a class, and no homework except writing speeches, but seems like an unfair grader. Would recommend getting a TA, not Schimek, the professor.
Seems like he will be cool, but he mostly just laughs at his own jokes. He NEVER answers e-mails, and he was really bad about making a video clip available that was needed for a huge paper assignment. I felt like I had to do his work for him. And for the last speech which was the hardest, decided to not let us use any notecards.
Terrible professor, he knows that the reading assignments are bogus and then asks absurd questions on the tests from the book. He will take off points for NOTHING and isn't willing to see your side if you talk to him. Speech grades are ridiculous, basically everyone gets a C even if you deserve better.
nice guy, terrible teacher. he will take off points (by tens) if you don't follow his strategic mold. example: you got 90 out of 100 points on a speech but went over by four seconds, and forgot to turn in something online, you get a 70. NEVER take his class if you want a good grade in COMS.
Prepare to get a C.
He really likes to laugh at his own jokes which are not at all funny. Other than that he classes are tolerable, but still not very enjoyable.
HORRIBLE grader. And he picks ridiculous speech topics that you can't even find information on.
Quite a good professor. Lessons are kind of boring but bearable. Speeches are okay and not that hard to do.
Great teacher. Helped me get over the fear of speaking in public.
Although he isn't the funniest guy, his heart is in the right place and he is very helpful and nice. He grades pretty easily and is a generous person.
He is a very ambivalent teacher, but usually grades easy. His speech topics are so random and are more challenging than other coms classes. Class is boring but he knows its a gen ed so he doesn't put too much work into it.
He is a good teacher. But you will work harder than any other speech class at KU. If you can avoid taking it with him, do so. I would recommend taking it with a TA. His work load is way too excessive for a 100 level COMS class.
Dr. Schimek is a very good man with really good intentions. You have to work hard to prepare yourself a good speech but thats all part of the class. He thinks his jokes are funny but thats what makes the class a very positive environment. He is understanding as long as you are willing to put forth the effort expected from you. I would recommend him
Good teacher with high expectations
Hard grader, the final study guide might have as well been a guide of what not to study.
I had him in the spring and I found his class to be my favorite of the semester. He was a super easy grader, I am not a good speaker and he never gave me below a B. Hes also very understanding and is willing to work with you to get the grade you want. Also no readings and rarely ever had homework, besides preparing for the speech.
he is a very hard grader and makes you work for your scores you receive. but he also has taught me so much about public speaking and how important it is to be prepared! although he is tough i thought the hard work paid off and made me more prepared for other classes and a future job
He's a great teacher, he knows his material therefore expects his students to understand it well. It's not a hard class, just very time consuming. The thing he's most strict about is our outlines for our speeches, he isn't shy about taking off points. Otherwise he's very understanding and helpful, especially during office hours.
Dr. Schimek is fantastic. He does a lot of things right. He's happy, lectures well, gives freedom with speech topics, lets students decide the order they'll speak in. Homework is mainly the speech outlines. He's not big into quizzes. Very understanding. Helpful in office hours. We even played Fallacy Jeopardy in class! Grateful to have had him!
COMS 130 is supposed to be an easy course, but Schimek makes it really difficult (touch grader, midterm, final exam). There are other professors to choose from that don't make their classes take a midterm or final exam.
Dr. Schimek gives great lectures if you are interested in learning the material. He covers a wide range of topics which will help you drastically improve your public speaking ability. He is very intellectual and if you want his help he is more than willing to give it. Show up to class, turn in your outline on time, and be prepared for your speech.
If you go over the time limit in a speech he will drop you a whole letter grade. He is the most frustrating teacher I have had in college. He does not put the same effort into the class as he expects you to put in. Overall, it is hard to respect him as person let alone a teacher.
He makes the class way harder than it is supposed to be. Gives you a lot of homework, every night. Gives midterm and final. He laughs at his jokes a lot. Would not recommend to anyone.
Came into this class terrified of public speaking, I was never really a well rounded speaker and lacked confidence when I had to present. He was very understanding and would always give feedback prior to your speech. Ended up with a C.
He is okay. Not by any means a horrible teacher and a pretty nice guy, but his teaching style is boring and he doesn't respond to emails very well. I'd say this class is easy to get a B or B- minus in, but very hard to get an A. Take your pick.
Very boring and not very good at responding to emails if you have questions or need help. He teaches the material decently, but makes the class harder than it needs to be. Midterm and Final are very hard, so don't expect them to help your grade. Talking to friends in other COMS130 classes, Schimek is one of the harder/worst professors you can get.
He was not helpful at all when emailed, was not willing to fix issues with his material
Probably one of the worst professors at KU. Docked my participation grade because I had an absence. Let it be known that I wasn't ENROLLED in the class when this "absence" happened. Horrible at responding to emails and makes the class way harder than it has to be. Would not recommend him to anyone. Don't take this class.
Coms 130 isn't supposed to be a hard class. Every other student at KU I have talked to jokes about how easy their teacher was, but no one will say that about Schimek. Compound this with the fact that his lectures are boring and he doesn't respond to email and you have a recipe for disaster. I'd recommend literally any other teacher over him.
He is terrible. Makes what should be an easy entry level class, extremely hard. He does not respond to emails and is very hard to work with. Tough grader and his midterm and final are also hard. Do not take coms130 with him.
Do not take Coms 130 with him. He's a difficult grader and is very difficult to reach if you need help. He is not understanding at all about absences, and will dock your participation if you are even five minutes late, even with a valid excuse. He turns an easy class into a disaster.
Nice guy and good lecturer. Very tough grader though, not an easy A like some GenEds. No excused absences, each one will dock you participation points. You have to be vigilant when it comes to turning in the correct documents at the correct time or there are harsh grade penalties. Overall, I didn't mind his class but it was certainly challenging.
Dr Schimek literally makes COMS 130 extremely hard for no reason. He seems cool on the first day, however, do not be humored. He will crack the hammer. If you don't try in this class(which you should not have to try in this class) you will get destroyed. Beware. If you enroll with Dr. Schimek, BEWARE.
I was not pleased with Dr. Schimek at all. He made an easy class into a class I dreaded. He gave no direction and does not seem to care about his students. Studying for the midterm and final exam was practically impossible because there was no direction whatsoever. I think that any other professor would have been better than him.
You must be in every class if you want to have a decent participation grade. He assigns busy work from the book that hardly helps with learning about public speaking. Very tough on grading speeches. His grading is hard to understand and when he does post grades it is at least 2-3 weeks later, so you might have already done your next speech.
This teacher makes a class that should be an easy entry-level class, your hardest class. Expect to feel as though you are in middle school with the amount of busy work worksheets he gives. The midterm and final are also impossible to study for because all he does to prepare you is say "everything is fair game". DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!!!
Dr. Schimek made this class more stressful than it needed to be. He graded harshly, gave little feedback (the feedback he did give on speeches was almost exactly the same to every student, regardless of what grade they received). He changed his expectations often without notice, and never responded to emails - Not a great model for communication.
He will constantly find little things to count off. I don't think I ever got 100% on an assignment. He's just the type of guy to have vague guidelines and then count off on specific things. No bueno.
COMS 130 is an easy entry level class! If you dont have Schimek.
Dr. Schimek was an awful teacher. I made it clear to him that I have autism as well as a paranoia disorder that leaves me housebound at times yet he still docks me points for participation. He grades heavily with little to no feedback. I already dreaded taking a speech class and he made it even worse. Avoid taking this class with him if you can.
If you miss one class you will fail this class. Also be prepared to be an expert in public speaking before even coming into the class. Very strict timing rules on speeches. It's an entry level class but he makes it's as hard as he can. Good luck
Overall, Dr. Schimek was an ok teacher. He made COMS 130/131 feel like an honors level course. Also if you are sick and email him, its not an excuse, he said that "an absence is an absence."
VERY tough grader. He does not accept late work under any circumstances, I learned that the hard way. For some reason assignments are due at 10pm or 10 am instead of midnight. Makes an intro level class wayy harder than it should be. Also makes us go up in front of the class for random surprise speeches multiple times throughout the semester. ;;
He graded harshly and never gives you corrections, or tells you how to get a better grade the next time. He does not work with you when you have to miss class. Gives a ton of pointless busy work. Overall makes the class ten time harder then it should be.
It isn't a nightmare. He isn't directly rude or disrespectful, he isn't horrific in class. He expects a lot for a coms 130 class, and despite this being required for most majors he acts as if we should all be very intensely invested in it personally. Impromptu speeches are common, and he's very unforgiving for absences and anxiety. Beware
Whatever you do not take COMS with him, he is terrible lecturer and grading is so frustrating. 3 people in my class of about 20 got As, I changed the class to pass/fail. I think hes a nice person but this was probably the worst class I have ever taken across highschool and college. big fat no from me and most others.
He's nice but that's about it. The class is more difficult than it should be. I respect the guy, but c'mon.
Regardless of what teacher you have, COMS 130 is an unbelievably frustrating course. This (required) entry level course will cause you so much stress for no reason. The grading is way too over the top for such an insignificant course. It is manageable but I promise that you're not going to like it. Just prepare yourself to be annoyed by this class.
Such a harsh grader for a speech class.
I turned in everything on time and never missed class. I would never get full participation points. I would ask how to get full participation points so I would get the best grade and I never got a response. If I was too sick to make it to class, I would not get an email back and my participation would lower because of something I could not control.
This prof is a really hard grader and does not give very constructive feedback at all. He will take off a lot of points for speeches with only positive feedback on the rubric. He is very strict about time limits and will tank your grade if you go over or under the allotted time. Rarely responds to emails. Fairly understanding w/ absences.
Provides way to much busy work, and the outlines he wants you to fill out are overdoing it.
He is a really nice guy, but he's really brief with some explanations if you're absent and is a really tough grader. He also doesn't really provide you with what you did wrong to improve, and is super picky with your outlines. He also doesn't answer emails very well. I was sick for a week and he never answered, but answered my classmate fast.
I have never had a teacher care about their students less than this guy. He is on a complete power trip and makes this (mandatory) class a living hell. Attendance is mandatory, you'll have more homework in this class than your others, and you'll have pop-improve speeches. He is the toughest grader with no empathy to the students who were nervous.
Tons of busy work and very insanely harsh grader. Ive never had a teacher grade as hard as he does, please make sure to ready the fine print on EVERY assignment or else he will count off points for not knowing the smallest details. He has no sympathy to nervous speakers as well, and he made us do pop-improv speeches which really sucked.
do not take him. coms 130 is an INTRODUCTORY GE CREDIT CLASS. there's no reason i should be spending more time for his class than my stem major specific classes. this class was brutal and i recommend you to NOT TAKE HIM AS YOUR PROFESSOR
I do think Dr. Schimek cares about his students, but his class was pretty unbearable. The grading criteria was unclear and busy work heavy. For an intro to public speaking class, I was spending entirely way too much time on his course. If you have a heavy workload as it is and aren't passionate about public speaking, take someone else for coms.
soldiers, I pray for you if you have him .He graded a 0 on my NOTECARDS for speech, I DIDNT EVEN SHOW HIM MY NOTECARDS? Hate him, threatened you if you were absent more than 3 times. Take first semester so you go rather than second semster.extremely picky with everything, will have POP-speeches. You have social anxiety? then I pray for you soldier.
Sub 5 weightmaxxed and how he grades works like taxes, you will NEVER receive the full amount on any assignment, if you miss a class you get deducted points. Work load had me spending more time a week than my stem classes.
This class did not feel like an entry level comms class. He is an extremely tough grader on both assignments and speeches. There is also tons of busy work. He is not the meanest guy ever but is definitely not the most forgiving either.
If your speeches aren't long enough or are too long, he takes off points, but you'll never know how many points. Could be 5, could be 50. He gives ONLY busy work; it isn't hard, but it's annoying. As long as you go, it's manageable, but never expect 100% on your assignments.
Work load for this class was absurd. He also is an insanely tough grader especially on assignments like the peer reviews. Go to his office hours for clarification on grading, and be specific with your questions or you will keep losing points. Missing class really hurts your grade. If you have the option, take this class with a different professor.
