God bless him, he's a really nice person, but his lectures go on and on and on and onnnnnnnnnnn.....when everyone already understands he doesnt stop!!! It's painful and he makes me feel the need to drink a whole keg after class.
Drags on and on? True. Classes unbearably difficult to attend? You bet. But he is fond of English, and a true intellect. To give him some credit his analytical skills are very good and he can make complicated pieces understandle. he makes me want
I couldn't get out of there fast enough. His lectures were boring, and he was an irrational marker. He told us time and time again to not do something on our essays, and when I didn't do it, he stated that I should have. NOT recommended.
I honestly think he has obsessive-compulsive disorder. He's either over or under medicated. (head scratching every 2 seconds?)Class is so boring that he makes church seem like a rave. Stay at home ppl-u wont learn a thing.
Although he's very helpful nice guy, his classes are dull. If you don't have some natural talent with writing this may not be the class to take. He likes things his way or the hiway, but sometimes it's hard to know what he wants and what he dosen't.
Really, this guy is very irrational. Never say what he wants to see in our essay, and extrmemly hard marker. Endless boring lectures, nothing helpful. Avoid him by all chance!!
He sucks!!!!It's so true that he's a hard marker. Avoid him for your own goodness.
he sucks!!!!! he doesnt explain****! his lectures have nothing to do with the course and the assignments he gives are never well explained. If in your in this class and you can get out-Do it NOW....if not you get get an F on a simple essay, when previously having been a straight A student.
I like his class and I would have walked away with a good impression if it weren't for the assignments. He is a crazy maker and is not clear what he wants at all. If you are in his class, make sure to go to his office and talk to him before handing in ANYHTHING!
Honestly! You guys are being way too hard on him. What you need to do to do well is simply to follow his instruction. Go to his office hours and he will definitly help you improve your grade. Over explain everything and KEEP TO THE GUIDELINES OF THE ASSIGMENT!
Very Bad Teacher!!! Says one thing, marks the opposite way! I would do anything to aviod this prof! If you have him next semester drop the class, find another class -- I wish I still had that opportunity.
HE is brutal!!!! Honestly drop the class if you are in it. I can't say enough about how terrible he is. Marks WAY too hard for a 1st year course, and is a geek. Drop the course now!
His course is not the easiest, but if you don't act like a wallflower and actually engage with the class it's not bad. On the whole, just DO WHAT HE SAYS and you'll do fine. If he says don't talk about the poet in the essay, don't talk about the poet or you'll fail. It's not rocket science...
He is a really good prof except he marks way too hard. He's approachable and nice and you can learn a lot with him. He seemed better than these ratings when I first took the course but he is definately too difficult of a marker. If you want to learn at the expense of a grade, he is good.
obviously well educated, but unclear about his expectations.concentrates primarily on the meaning of peoms and prose during lectures but expects students to concentrate on syntax and structure in essays.if you want to pass essays go to him in advance with a draft and ask for help.unforgiving marker!
it simple, write an essay the way he explains and dont do anything else, he is not clear but you can get a good mark if you do it his way
He is a hard but reasonable marker. He gives very thorough and legitimate comments after marking each assignment which I found helpful in improving my following essays. I learnt a lot from his class and I felt that the poems and short stories we studied were thoughtfully chosen.
Such a hard marker!!!!! I was an A student in English before taking his class where I never recieved a mark higher than a D. Never gave any positive remarks on any one of my papers, every comment was a slap in the face. Would never take a class with him again!!!!
The above comments may be influenced by their youth (all first year), but I'm about to graduate this semester (English Major). Shakespearean "Tragedies and Histories" was memorable for his passion, experience, and effort. He knows his material, and is a captivating speaker. Buck up, kids!
Arbitrarily hard marker... uses personal biases. Little understanding of his own subject matter or assignments. Gives pedantically explicit assignments, and then changes the requirements at the last minute. Absolutely inappropriate.
His expectations are unclear. If you are in his class, make sure that you go to his office hours. He is an absolutely unforgiving marker.I am an English major and I took his course after recieving A's in several 200 level Englishes and I got a C in his class(not for lack of effort).I don't recommend h
I have never liked english, or been very good at it. I can see why some 1st years find this class hard, but as a 3rd year, I loved it. The articles and essays you read in this class are super interesting and challenge you thinking. What he wants from you in your essays is clear and if you stick to the guidelines set out, it's hard not to do well.
The worst prof I have had in 4 years of English courses. Vague, over reaching and spastic I took to counting how many times per class I had to hear "did anyone notice?" -- not only that but his brief digressions always lasted 50 mins, leaving no time for actually covering the material. nice man, bad teacher
Okay so i figured out how to get a good mark. before the essays and exams, go to his office hours and listen to him talk for ever. Even though it may seem pointless, it will help you out. He only wants to hear his own opinions.
self-absorbed, opinionated SOB. should seriously reflect on why he has chosen this career path.
AWFUL. He covered seven plays without explaining them at all. Also, he's a dick for details, and gives tests that are completely irrelevant to the course. He assigns paper topics that belong in first year, but marks in a ridiculous fashion, docking a full letter grade for something other profs would take 2% for. Bah!
My primary complaint has to do with his demeanor. He comes off as b*tchy and arrogant. I agree that he is an exceptionally hard marker. I have the odd feeling that he enjoys seeing his students twist in the wind. Overall, his class was a negative experience for me.You'll survive it, but probably won't like it.
Engaging and brilliant. Open to student's ideas and perspectives, but willing to engage in debate which is very refreshing. Truly helped me to understand the literature we studied. I found him to be humble and funny.
Amazing. I couldn't disagree more with most of the comments on here. Clear about how to read academic material critically and write about it properly. Extremely knowledable and a great sense of humor (albeit a bit 'off') extremely helpful if you ask for it. Solid marker, great feedback. Would take not only him but class again in a heartbeat!
Great prof, very very interesting, he really knows his 'stuff'. Would for sure take another course from him again.
He really knows his material, but is a ridiculously hard marker and focuses on stupidly nitpicky details instead of looking at the play as a whole. Worst mark, and hardest english class ive ever taken in four years of english. I would not recommend him. If i get A's on shakespeare papers with another prof, then i dont deserve C+'s and B-'s with him
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I hate modernist poetry, but the Joyce and Beckett lectures made up for Eliot and Stevens. Only hangup is the difficulty for an "intro. to modern lit" class. I found upper level modern lit courses equally if not less demanding which seems misleading to the poor student giving modern lit a first try with Wong.
if you want a failing grade... take this class!
Wong is great at what he does and actually got me interested in poetry and prose. Gives mostly interesting lectures, although he is a verrrry hard marker.
ahhhh worst prof i have had in 3 years of university. marks ridiculously hard, lowest mark BY FAR on my transcripts. only teacher i hae ever gone to for help, and it was useless. he is well educated, but a horrible teacher!! killed my interest in modern lit forever.
He wrote the exact same comments on two of my essays. He is a ridiculously hard marker and is far too critical of writing styles. I hated this class because of him. He knows his stuff but wrecked my gpa.
I have never heard use the word "curious" so often in so many ways. I didn't like him. Yes, he writes lengthy comments at the end of your assignments, but they are useless and unhelpful. I just went to look at the final marks for our class this term and there were no As, no A+s, 2 A-s and 3 B+s...how are people supposed to maintain GPAs with that?
Some great insight but overall hard to keep up with. Not easy to ask for help, he just repeats what he already said. Not very flexible with his availability. One of my least favourites.
zomg i got pwnd in his class! Im so used to getting As and A-s in english but i saw the darkside of english in this class.. oh well.. his tough marking just made me work 1000 times as hard so i guess its a good thing that i took this brutal class,
One word: Riggggggggggght?
Challenged me to think for myself. He sometimes goes on journeys but that was never an issue for me. He was available for me, helped clarify issues I had with my papers and was kind to simple grammatical errors. I signed up for another of his courses just because he was teaching it. Although I never broke out of A- I'd take his class again.
He's a bit of a joke. He thinks he uis so smart and literally shoots down sutdents oopinions in class. Hands down one of the worst professor i have had for my entire school career.
Really enthusiastic about the middle English literature - it's probably his specialty. Helpful and introduced a lot of stuff that I don't think a lot of other teachers would have. Really glad I took this class, and made me -love- the subject matter.
A very calm character who often brags about his famous contacts, his "intelligence", and how ungrateful we are to have his majesty S.G. Wong as class instructor. Somewhat harsh grader , he basically grinds you to the point that you give your all.
Mr. Wong teaches a tough class and is a hard professor. Coming into Eng 135 straight out of highschool I would NOT recommend this class from Mr. Wong without previous university english experience. That being said, he is very available during office hours and is very passionate about english. Not recommended for a first year student. Second = ok.
I am an English major and a published writer. I have NEVER struggled in English, but I did with Wong. He will DESTROY your GPA. To be fair, he's very clear about how hard he marks, tells you exactly what to expect, and is an entertaining professor. Just prepare to struggle for mediocrity- There is no excelling with Wong.
Prof. Wong is great at what he does. He expects a lot out of his students, but in an encouraging, respectful way. He really pushes his students to engage themselves with the text and strive to enhance their understanding of the material. Admittedly, he is a very difficult marker, but always includes typed and in depth comments to returned papers.
Sam expects you to be ready to learn when you step through the door. If you don't read the weekly readings, he will find out and humiliate you in front of the class (in a nice way). He is a hard marker, but a fair one. He is more than willing to help you if you ask for it. Knows what he is teaching and is hilarious..I would totally take him again
I took Samuel Wong's Shakespeare class. He was a fair marker, and included a typed note attached to each essay to explain why each student received a certain grade. The readings are mandatory if you want to do well. So is attending the class. Sometimes his lectures are a bit confusing, but overall I enjoyed him as a prof.
Hard. I took AP English and thought I was good -- my marks didn't reflect that.
Arrogant and talks about fluff in the plays, mostly focusing on the plot. I reduced his lectures to several stock sentences. He highlighted the comedy in some of the plays (which is sometimes difficult to catch when just reading the play) but that's about it. I did not learn a thing.
Hard but fair marker. Provided clear instructions and feedback for assignments. Best English teacher I have ever had.
Terrible - in personality and as a prof. All he did was recount the plot of the plays and he tries to embarass students if they haven't read quite up to the page he assigned (something I'm never embarassed about). Won't help you in office hours either; he'll just go off about whatever he wants to talk about.
Samuel Wong is a great teacher IF you actually want to learn something. His essay marking is tough but fair and he manages his class time very well. If your interest does not lie in the literary world, don't waste your time or his.
Wong is an alright professor but I got the same material from Sparknotes as his lectures. Make sure you attend classes as he will threaten to hold your grade without documentation... but won't tell you till the final!! His marking is hard but he warns you about this. Be wary and come prepared.
Professor Dr. Wong gives clear, inspirational, and amazing lectures. If you can find the time to attend his office hours, he will give you in-depth and life-altering discussions about Shakespeare's comedies, histories, and problem plays. He may not pretend you know what you're talking about when you don't, but your "mettle is always being tested".
Professor Wong is a great teacher. His lectures are interesting and funny, and he's always willing to give help and clarify when needed. His marking is hard but fair, and he gives each assignment plenty of useful feedback. However, don't take his class if you expect to get away with not doing the assigned reading!
Wong is so awesome. He love Shakespeare an alarming amount and always gives entertaining lectures. I went into this class thinking I would hate it because historically Shakespeare has not been my favourite. But it actually ended up being my favourite English class I've taken at UVic!
To start, my friends and I attended every class, and love English, so we were involved and did the readings. The midterm he gave us had nothing to do with the course we took, was flabbergastingly difficult and was extremely unfair to the students. I quite literally cried in class during the exam, although I spent LOTS of time studying.
seriously enjoyed this class. The materials were good and the professor was as well. He says at the beginning of the term that he will randomly call on students (which at first really freaked me out) but he can tell if you don't know and he most likely won't call on you. No attendance but show up to class the tests are based on what he says.
Amazing, interesting lectures which make you think. I would take every class with him I possibly could. The highlight of my schedule!
Tough grader and incredibly boring lectures. Lots of reading, but that's mostly just because of the class. Opinionated about the readings and DO NOT challenge him on them. Doesn't go well. Not a bad guy, but not a great professor.
I went into this class not stoked about having to take a Shakespeare course, & now I'm wishing UVic offered more! Samuel Wong knows just about everything there is to know about Shakespeare and his lectures are filled with energy. Do the readings and be prepared to be called on in class! He marks hard but if you put in the work you will get results
Dr. Wong was a great prof! He's energetic, clearly knows a lot about medieval lit, and was always on time and prepared for the lectures. Was very passionate about the subjects and was funny too. Mid term was 100% short answer and final was short answer with an essay, he gave out the topics before hand. Very easy. Just pay attention in class.
Dr. Wong is an awesome professor, although he is a tough grader and his tests are rough. We had 2 essays, a short review & the final in this class. One of the best profs I've had in terms of lectures- you can tell he is super passionate about Shakespeare and provides really interesting and provocative commentary. You need to read in order to pass.
Professor Wong's lectures are fast-paced and engaging. He was incredibly approachable during office hours and gave clear expectations for assignments throughout the course. I would strongly advise first-year students to take courses with him, as he was the best professor I had through my first semester at UVIC.
Samuel is the absolute goat. Loved the way he spoke about academic writing. He genuienly makes you feel as though you are a part of the 'academy' in which the course is directed upon. He is not a tough grader if you put in actual effort to write decent papers, and he definately understands his students' writing capabilities. Would defs take again.
Very solid choice. Knows everything there is to know about Shakespeare. Tough grader on your papers though. Need to make generous use of quotations.
Tough grader, attendance mandatory or he basically fails you, all my other grades were fine within this semester except w/ his class, hes super nice as a person but didnt like him as a prof and quite opinionated in regards to literature, lectures are really boring - especially given covid, he didnt seem to understand students struggles imo.
Had him for first year, first semester and this is where my anxiety for school truly started. I experienced ableism with him because I had to leave early for class due to a disability that isnt visible. That was truly traumatic for me, Im in 3rd year now and Im scared of all my prof because of him. Worst experience ever. Truly discouraging.
From my experience, Dr. Wong was fine. You definitely need to be good at paying attention, his lectures are long and can seem dry if you aren't paying attention. Allowed flexibility on his final paper which I liked, but definitely get ready to read more than most english classes.
Samuel Wong is arguably one of the best profs I've had at UVIC. However, he knows what he expects from you so be prepared to follow his instructions and if you don't understand ask him. Two things to be aware of: he WILL call on you in class, and you'll have to get used to a prof who doesn't use slides if you're taking Shakespeare with Wong.
Dr. Wong is excellent. For this class he used an online text so we did not have to purchase any materials. The final exam was difficult as you have to identify specific passages, but if you read the plays it is fine. His lectures were very interesting.
Professor Wong is one of my favourite lecturers! I could listen to him go on and on for hours - very insightful! He creates courses that are super engaging (Utopian Fiction, Horror Literature/Film). Usually 2 essays (~1500 words each about motifs, worth 35% each) and a take-home final (30%). Would recommend taking just about any class he offers!
Dr. Wong was excellent. He provided scanned copies of all readings (most of which were under 10 pages) but there is reading daily. We were graded on four essays, with the lowest mark dropped (no final!). However, there is no clear rubric for the essays. His lectures were very interesting and engaging, and he was always available outside class.
very good teacher, his lectures are top tier. however i had issues with his attendance policy (if over 4 absences you automatically fail the class), especially since it's flu season. ignoring that, he grades fairly on both essays and other assignments. would take one of his classes again.
I really liked Dr. Wong at the beginning of the semester but halfway through the term I missed a class and he seemed to take it personally. He made me - and anyone else who missed that particular class (he did not say was mandatory) do extra work.
Good teacher but tough grader. Lots of essays and class participation matters.
He's very bad at giving any positive feedback even when receiving good marks. He calls on people in class and is very passive aggressive when you don't know answers or ask questions both over email and in person. The way he gives feedback and answers students questions is extremely degrading and passive aggressive.
Prof. Wong is hands down the best teacher I've had at UVic. His lectures are amazing and he is so passionate about the subject. He answers emails near instantly and is willing and able to help if you just ask. 10/10 loved every class
Good and very knowledgeable prof. Willing to help anyone who puts in the work themselves. Helpful in emails and office hours.
Samuel was nothing but rude to me when I reached out for clarification on an assignment. He gives absolutely no rubric with any of his assignments, so if you rely heavily on them, good luck. I can see how people like him, he was just nothing but passive to me.
Ugh horrible teacher. Would cold call students and when they didn't know the answer he would make a mockery out of them. Constantly gave me the same grade with absolutely no feed back. It felt like he didn't want my class to succeed. The average in my class was 71% which is insane considering it's a first year english course.
Ignore first-year reviews if you're in English—Wong was a great lecturer and gave amazing feedback. I do wish his classes had included more criticism and/or theory, but his lectures were still insightful. Wong covered so much material that I felt significantly more well-versed in horror, and the larger canon, by the end of term. Recommend!
